PARKING CHANGE TO BENEFIT MOTORISTS Thousands of Sheffield motorists who pay to park using their mobile phone, by text, app or via the web won’t have to pay extra for the service – and it will soon be available throughout the city for the first time. Sheffield City Council has announced a new provider for its cashless parking payment scheme, which launcheD on Tuesday, May 2. Initially it will launch in the city centre but is soon set to be rolled out to all pay and display parking bays across the city over the next few weeks for the very first
time. New provider Pay By Phone doesn’t charge motorists a fee to use its service – meaning it costs people exactly the same to park using text, on the website, via a mobile app or telephone as it does to put cash into a meter. The only optional cost offered by the service is to receive texts which warn motorists that their parking space is about to run out – but subscribers can opt out of receiving these messages. The provider will take over from previous supplier RingGo next Tuesday, before
extending the service to areas such as Hillsborough, Broomhill and Sharrow over the next few weeks. This extension into pay and display outside the city centre has been in response to feedback from customers and businesses, ensuring it’s easier and more convenient to park in council pay and display locations. New signs will start appearing in the city centre car parks and on Pay and Display machines in the coming days with the new details, but the actual changeover will happen
/THEMERCURYNEWSPAPER
on 2 May 2017. For now motorists are encouraged to keep using the existing provider, RingGo, but are advised to prepare for the switch over by setting up an account and downloading the app with Pay By Phone in advance of next week’s launch. Ben Brailsford, Parking Services Manager at Sheffield City Council, said: “This new provider will give motorists across the city more flexibility when it comes to parking their vehicle. “We’ve all been in the situation where we don’t have the exact change
free estimate daytime or evening call
needed for a meter and the new cashless system is easy to use, doesn’t cost extra and gives drivers another option to explore. “We’re also introducing the scheme to other parts of the city for the first time meaning everyone who uses their car across the city can park with ease and flexibility.”
Motorists can download the Pay By Phone app from their mobile phone or tablet, or log on to the website, www.paybyphone. co.uk, to register their details.

This can be a week of terrific progress, as long as you keep very much abreast of the small print. Why? Well, not everything you read or even hear this week is necessarily going to be true. If you can stick to your own single minded vision of things however, huge steps can be taken. Call for more...
There may be part of you that wants to be freer of more intense and restrictive situations. The Full Moon can force some of these into the open, and it may be linked to property, or even where or who you live with. However, make sure that you have a clear grasp of the details. Call for more...
You could surprise people by how single-minded you can be in grappling with a new and exciting strand in your situation. With the Full Moon also emerging in your sector of relating, there really can be a sense of freshness around one involvement. Yet, money and friends do not mix so well. Call for more...
The Full Moon in your sign forges a fine link with Pluto. This combination suggests a conversation can prove to be somewhat fated this week, either in terms of its impact on you at a personal level or in terms of a close relationship. Do listen to your intuition Scorpio. Call for more advice...
You could be forgiven this week for thinking that something has gone awry with the heavens, or at least their influences. Not so! It’s simply that Mars is being tempered by the blurry energies of Neptune, and some of your hopes and wishes could get bogged down in doubts. Call for more...
You are unlikely to be lacking in imagination or inspiration when it comes to some new, rather novel approaches. But the full Moon is asking you to also stay sensitive of the more emotional issues that affect your energy and overall sense of well-being Sagittarius. Call for more advice...
The Full Moon offers a wonderful opportunity to supercharge your involvements, especially with someone who shares an interest, hope, aspiration or key principle with you. By binding together as one, an enormous opportunity is presented to be dynamic and resourceful. Call for more...
Whatever you’re involved in at this time, be it socially, creatively or professionally, you’re going to need to feel at the heart of things, otherwise your attention span may drift. The link between the Sun and Pluto, can see you make significant progress towards your goals. Call for more news...

VOTING TO BE MADE EASIER FOR DOMESTIC ABUSE VICTIMS Survivors of domestic abuse will soon find it easier to register to vote anonymously under new plans announced recently. Chris Skidmore, Minister for the Constitution, has published a range of proposals that will make the anonymous registration scheme in England and Wales more accessible to those escaping domestic abuse, and ensure that survivors can participate in our democracy. The anonymous registration scheme protects people whose safety would be at risk if their name and address appeared in the electoral register. For example, this might include victims of harassment or stalking, as well as some witnesses in criminal court cases. The current system has come under criticism for lacking the flexibility and understanding of various scenarios which survivors of domestic abuse often find themselves in. The minister has been working with domestic abuse charities over the past 6 months, including Women’s Aid, to explore what could be done to ease the process for one of the most vulnerable
groups in society. Women’s Aid estimate that the proposals in the policy statement could help thousands of survivors of domestic abuse. Mehala Osborne, survivor and founder of the Right to Vote campaign, said: “I was denied a vote whilst living in a refuge, and I never realised how much having a vote meant until it was taken away from me. I had already been through enough, and to be disempowered even more was so difficult. I am so proud to have started the campaign that has led to these proposed changes. Survivors in the future will not be denied their voice and democratic right to vote”. Polly Neate, Chief Executive of Women’s Aid, said: “Domestic abuse must not deny women their right to take part in democracy. So, we welcome the changes proposed today on anonymous registration, and we thank the government – particularly the Minister Chris Skidmore, for decisive action on this. The proposed new measures send out a clear message to all survivors of domestic abuse: that their voices matter, and their participation in politics matters.”
FIND A PATH THROUGH PARKINSONS This event is the first in a programme of 6 dates – please see below for the full list A Path through Parkinson’s is a selfmanagement programme designed to help you think about and plan how you want to navigate your life with Parkinson’s. It brings 8-12 people with Parkinson’s, partners and carers together for six sessions of discussion, activity and self-reflection. It is free to attend. Each self-management group is led by trained volunteer facilitators with firsthand experience of Parkinson’s. The aim is to share experiences and discuss the practical and emotional impact of Parkinson’s. People tell us that as a result of attending they feel armed with information and knowledge and more confident, positive, in control and able to move forward. By meeting others, people also feel less alone. Participants also gain greater selfawareness and insight and a personal action plan for doing specific things such as exercise, hobbies and therapeutic
activities. Talking in the group can also improve speech. • Dates: 11 May, 18 May, 25 May, 1 June, 8 June & 15 June • Time:10:30am – 1:00pm • Venue: St Mary’s Conference Centre, Bramall Lane, S2 4QZ For more information or to book a place people just need to email selfmanagement@parkinsons.org.uk or call 0207 963 3924. This is what some previous participants say about A Path through Parkinson’s: Julie attend a self-management programme in Derby “The selfmanagement programme is unique; I’ve not come across anything like it before. It brings together different types of people who are in different types of situations, but with an understanding of each other. It helped me get over some of the little demons inside my head – it’s a reality check.

Chris Skidmore, Minister for the Constitution, said: “This government is committed to removing any barriers that prevent voters from exercising their democratic right. Having met survivors of domestic abuse over the past 6 months, it is clear that the existing system has often let down those affected by domestic abuse. That is why today we are setting out proposals to reform the anonymous registration scheme in England and Wales to make it more accessible for those escaping domestic abuse. Protecting the safety of survivors by making it easier for them to register to vote without their name and address appearing on the electoral register is a key part of that change.” The government is now welcoming feedback on proposals to expand the evidence to include new types of attester and new types of documentary evidence, along with other measures in the statement. ASK FOR ANGELA: BAR SAFETY CAMPAIGN STARTS IN SHEFFIELD A campaign is starting in Sheffield to support safe dating and tackle sexual harassment in pubs, bars and clubs. ‘Ask For Angela’ encourages people to discreetly ask for help from bar staff if they are feeling unsafe or uncomfortable. This might be whilst on a date or if they are getting unwanted attention. Asking For Angela at the bar will discreetly alert staff to the call for help, and bar staff are being trained about how best to offer this. This might involve taking someone aside to speak in confidence, calling someone a taxi, contacting friends of family, asking the person causing distress to leave the venue, or calling the
VOTE FOR ROSIE FURNISS IN THE FINALS OF MISS GENTING 2017 ON THURSDAY 4TH MAY! Rosie, 21, from Dronfield, is to show her talents in the arts; including Portrait drawing, Special Effects Body Art and Singing. Both as a solo artist, and a member of Steph King’s famous Stage Show, Rosie performs to raise money for charity. Her artistic talents were recently recognised by Sheffield United, who commissioned her to produce portrait drawings.
Police. Twenty venues are being trained on Friday, 5 May, by Sheffield’s Drug and Alcohol/Domestic Abuse Coordination Team and Sheffield’s Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre. The campaign will then go live on Friday, 19 May. All pubs, clubs and bars are encouraged to take part. Alison Higgins, Domestic Abuse Strategic Manager at Sheffield City Council, said: “This is about keeping people safe and offering a discreet way for them to ask for help if they’re on a night out and getting unwanted attention or are out on a date and something doesn’t feel right. This is particularly important with the rise of internet dating and dating apps. “We’re providing training to pubs, bars and nightclubs, and want as many as possible to take part. “Sheffield has a busy, thriving and safe nighttime economy and we work closely with venues through our Best Bar None scheme. This campaign is a further way to help people when they’re out at night.”
Ask For Angela launched in Lincolnshire last year, developed by Lincolnshire County Council, and gained global attention after a social media post about it went viral and was shared by more than 55,000 people. Meera Kulkarni, Chief Executive of Sheffield Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre, said: “Sheffield Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre is delighted to support the Ask Angela campaign in Sheffield. “We want everyone to feel safe and enjoy their nights out wherever they are in the City. Whether it’s a date with someone you met online that doesn’t feel quite right or a night out with mates. If someone is commenting or behaving in a way that is disrespectful, unwelcome, threatening and/or harassing, it’s not ok. “The Ask for Angela campaign will ensure that bar staff help support you and enable you to leave safely if that’s what you want. People might feel embarrassed about ‘making a fuss’ or be seen to be over- reacting but if you feel unsafe – it’s not ok.
Rosie needs your vote. The winner receives direct entry into Miss England Grand Final at Resorts World in July. Rosie has raised thousands of pounds for various charities including: Teenage Cancer Unit in Sheffield, Guide Dogs, Sheffield Children’s Hospital and Bluebell Wood Hospice, through singing and performing. She currently studies BA (Hons) Media Make Up with Special Effects at University, and teaches singing to youngsters in Stephanie Kings Stage Academy. She is always looking for different ways to raise funds to improve the lives of local children. She decided to take part in the event when she found out it will be raising money for Beauty with a Purpose- Miss World’s chosen charity- which helps ill and disadvantaged children.
VOTE FOR ROSIE by texting ‘MISSGENTING02’ to 63333. Texts cost 50p plus your standard network rate.

UK MOTORWAYS ‘SET TO WELCOME DRIVERLESS CARS’ The UK’s motorways could welcome driverless cars as early as 2019, a group of technology companies has suggested. Called the Driven Consortium, the group is aiming to trial autonomous vehicles between London and Oxford, with the cars due to perform “all safety-critical driving functions”. The Government will provide funding of £8.6 million towards the project, which will also review data protection, cyber security, and the ways in which driverless cars should be insured. A fleet of six autonomous vehicles, which are able to communicate with each other, will feature in the project. Commenting on the scheme, Dr Graeme Smith, chief executive of Oxbotica, said it will seek to tackle many of the “fundamental challenges” which are currently holding back the commercial deployment of fully autonomous vehicles. He stated: “Today’s news is truly groundbreaking. No company, group or consortium of autonomy experts has ever attempted what Driven is planning over the next 30 months.” Oxford University’s Professor Paul Newman said trials of autonomous vehicles are moving from single cars to whole fleets. He commented: “What’s interesting is what data the vehicles share with one another, when and why.” Overall, a sum of £100 million is being invested by the Government in autonomous

driving technology, to ensure the right infrastructure is in place. A so-called “cluster of excellence” is being created along the M40 corridor as part of this investment. A range of trials are taking place around the world to push self-driving technology forward. In one high-profile example, London residents were recently given the opportunity to travel in a driverless shuttle near the capital’s O2 Arena complex. The infrastructure behind driverless cars could be key to their success. Recent research from the RAC Foundation suggested that higher standards of road maintenance will be required if the use of these vehicles becomes widespread. In particular, the organisation warned of the potentially damaging impact potholes could have.

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
After an incredibly dull day in the office, I decided to leave the rat race for a day, and enjoy myself on a local water, doing nothing more than watching a float… I often take a trip down to Gawsworth Fisheries in Cheshire when I just need to switch off, and relax. There is something for all at this pretty fishery, and I just fancied a day in the sun, fishing just a single rod, and see what came along. The first thing that came along was snow! I was somewhat dismayed in the early hours of the morning, to open the back door, and find a scattering of snow, and frozen windscreen as I got into the van. I felt sure that a sudden cold snap would have put the fish off feeding, but I was determined to go fishing, so set off for the venue… after I’d defrosted the car! Gawsworth has several pools, and I favoured Park Pool for this session, a small two acre lake, which I know holds a variety of species, including roach, rudd, tench, crucian carp, ‘proper’ carp, and bream amongst others. It’s also the shortest walk from the car park, so as a pleasure pool, it’s perfect for the angler who may not be as agile as others, and wants to enjoy a day fishing in pleasant surroundings. There has been much work recently at the fishery too; new pegs installed on Wall Pool, a new car park, and a new metalled track running to the other pools, which makes it even more accessible to visiting anglers, and can only increase the appeal. The last time I fished here, I set up in a tight corner which is generally ignored by many, having an abundance of lily cover, overhanging trees, and subsurface snags, but I had a feeling that, sheltered from a biting northerly wind, it may hold a few fish, and if the heavens opened, it was a short run back to the van! Prior to my latest trip, I’d spotted a few ‘proper’ floats offered for sale at the local car boot jamboree, the kind with a glossy black finish, some banded with thin strips of white and black below a glowing scarlet tip, others constructed of Sarkanda reed, yet more showing ‘guesstimates’ of shotting patterns, but all with character, and I was keen to try them; I’m a sucker for old floats! I don’t float fish as often as I should. Modern angling seems very technical, and is almost always in pursuit of big fish, and float fishing just doesn’t seem ‘trendy’ anymore. In fact, I know anglers who have never experienced the pleasure of seeing the colours of a float fade as it plummets into the depths, yanked by a bully boy perch, or witnessed the graceful lift from the fizzing bubbles as a tench picks up the shot nearest the hook on a misty morning, and to me, that is tragic. In my early years, I sat upon a wicker creel, packed with Winfield tackle, weakly diluted squash, a packet of beef paste sandwiches, and a couple of Blue

Riband bars, and gleefully opened my cantilever tackle box to reveal a range of Ivan Marks and Drennan Blue floats, and if that wasn’t enough, I also had a smart wooden float box, crammed with shiny alternatives, carefully arranged in size with which I would get indications from all kinds of fish, and I was never bothered which species came next! I don’t do enough of that nowadays… So, I did. I set up a Sonik S4 waggler rod, clamped on a centrepin reel, and selected a small, green, quill to carry my 3 no.4 shot, and looped on a pretied hooklink of just 3lb breaking strain, to which was attached a size 16 hook. I carefully plumbed the depth, added enough shot to leave a glimmer of float tip showing, and put a piece of corn on the hook. Simple, yet strangely satisfying in an increasingly technical arena. The float was gently released underarm to the edge of the lilies, a walnut sized lump of groundbait, and a pinch of corn and pellet thrown in to leave the float tip centred in the expanding ripples, and I sat back to relax; blissful! Within seconds, the float lurched as something below the surface swam by in pursuit of the free offerings, so at least there were fish present! A further few seconds, and the float dipped almost imperceptibly, before rising again by the same amount… then it slipped away, and I lifted into the first fish of the day, a bream of around two pounds. The float was quickly dropped back on to the spot, a pinch of bait added, and again, it quickly sank from sight, this time with a beautifully golden rudd attached…perfect! I spent the next hour watching intently; bubbles around the float signified crucian carp picking out the pellets, and a change to a soft pellet hookbait saw a number of them make my acquaintance on the bank; nothing big, all around ten ounces, but they have a fascination for me as I admired the beautiful buttery flanks as they circle up through the water during their characteristic tussle. Maggots saw roach and rudd intercept the baits on the drop, pellets caught more crucian carp, corn picked off the bream, and bread or meat proved of interest to chub, ide, and hybrids as the fish kept coming… Sadly, after a couple of hours, the snow returned with a vengeance; dark grey clouds supported drifting veils of swirling snow as the temperature

plummeted, and the sky grew dark… time to pack up, and with haste! I rapidly packed my barrow as the snow started to soak through my jacket, and quickly returned to the van, slammed the doors, and sat in the cab with a cup of tea, whilst watching other anglers dive for cover! The weather became atrocious, and realising it was set for the rest of the day, I drove home under a leaden sky and marvelled at the fortitude of those who had chosen to hunker down in their bivvy (or who more likely, were holding onto the ribs, not daring to let go lest it be swept from their grasp). In truth, I’d really enjoyed my morning, not knowing what was coming next, watching the float settle,

and then slide away repeatedly as my baits were taken. I hadn’t caught a single fish of more than two pounds in weight (although I did latch into something bigger, a carp, which snapped my flimsy hook link) but each one was welcome, and each one was fun on the centrepin… I shan’t leave it as long next time, and instead of becoming engrossed in the scientific, technical side of angling, concentrating on taking the ‘right’ pictures for my supporting brands, or catching a specific fish, I shall just go and enjoy a bit of fishing reminiscent of my youth, back in the days when it was all still a mystery…

PRESTON POINT PLEASES WARNE ROTHERHAM United boss Paul Warne was quick to hail his side’s efforts as they earned their second away point of the season following a tireless display at Preston North End, in their last away game of the season. Richie Smallwood’s wonder-strike gave the Millers the early initiative and Tom Adeyemi came within a whisker of adding a second, just minutes later. However, Millers hopes of victory were dented when Stevie May curled an effort into the topcorner of the goal. In a topsy-turvy second half, Adeyemi’s low effort stung the palms of Chris Maxwell before sub Simon Makienok was twice denied late on as Semi Ajayi hacked clear from his own line before he won an aerial duel with Richard O’Donnell to loop a header onto the crossbar. Speaking to the assembled media afterwards, Warne was quick to praise his side’s hardworking display at Deepdale.
“I’m a proud manager tonight,” Warne enthused. “The lads can take confidence from the performance and everyone involved with Rotherham United should be proud of their team tonight. “The players stuck to our game plan really well. At the end, the lads fatigued which forced a few changes and they put the giant on (Makienok) and kept hitting diagonals to him but back to front, we were great and we defended resolutely.” Following a strong start by the visitors, Warne believed his side were worthy of the early lead given to them thanks to Smallwood’s first Millers goal of the season. “We went on top thanks to a great goal from Richie,” Warne added. “Richie is usually the sitting midfielder. He doesn’t get too many opportunities but he is good on dead balls. He does not get into the

BUTLER’S BRENTFORD SPIRIT Club captain Andy Butler wants Rovers to invoke the spirit of Brentford in the final game of the Sky Bet League Two season against Hartlepool United. Rovers have already achieved promotion to Sky Bet League One, and head to Victoria Park one point behind Plymouth Argyle in the race for the title. Butler said: “We have to beat Hartlepool- that is the main objective now. Stranger things have happened, you only have to look at the season where Rovers got promoted at Brentford and how it can change instantly. “We cannot influence Plymouth’s result, but they have become the hunted now and it will be a hard game for them at Grimsby.” Regardless of whether Rovers overhaul Argyle – who head to Blundell Park to take on Grimsby Town – for the title, Butler feels Rovers should be proud at achieving promotion. Title rivals Plymouth travel to Grimsby Town
and Butler is adamant that Rovers can keep the pressure on them with a positive result at Victoria Park. He added: “We want to win the league, with the pressure we have put on ourselves and the standard we have set. “It has been an incredible season for us, we have been to places like Newport and battled on pitches like that and all around the league and faced different battles. We have been promoted at the first time of asking, when a lot of teams have struggled in this division and have not come back straight away and everyone has to take huge credit for getting back to League One. “Everyone at the football club should be incredibly proud of themselves - the staff, the players and the fans.”
goalscoring opportunities like Tom Adeyemi, for instance. He does a lot of the ugly stuff, so it’s good for him to get the goal.” The Millers supremo also reserved praise for the likes of ‘keeper Richard O’Donnell, who stood up tall to withstand a late barrage from the hosts and Lee Frecklington, who made a welcome return from injury in Lancashire. “Our captain (Frecklington) wanted to play and
he was excellent. I thought Clarke-Harris was a threat up top while Adeyemi always gives us a chance of a goal. I also think Richard O’Donnell has really grown into the shirt. He was brave and came out for things and the back four have got confidence into him- you could see that near the end. “We were tight all around the pitch. I’m proud of what the lads put in and there are great shoots for us going into the summer and next season.”

There were just three games this week, well four, but more on that later. These were fairly significant games though, with the final league title decided and the regular league season concluded. Premier Division On Wednesday the final two Premier Division games took place. The main order of the day was who would get the runner’s up spot. Second placed Swinton Athletic were at home to fifth placed AFC Penistone Church and third placed Frecheville were away against Houghton Main. Swinton Ahtletic took second place in the end, as goals from Jake Ford (2), Joe Dungworth (2) and Enzo Guarini (2) gave them a convincing 6-2 victory over Penistone. The defending champions Frecheville suffered though, as they were downed 5-0 at Middlecliffe Lane. Joe Sidebottom starred for Houghton Main, scoring three times, with Ben Day also on target twice. Division One The final game of the season on Saturday in Division One could not be more significant. South Kirkby were sat in second place, two points behind leaders Grimethorpe Sports. They took on fourth placed Ecclefield Red Rose 1915 knowing only a victory could give them the Division One title. That however, was too much, as Ecclefield ran-out 3-0 winners to hand the title to Grimethorpe Sports. Division Two The Division Two play-off between Hepworth United and Stocksbridge Park Steels Development took place on Wednesday night. Well, it started but was not finished, as floodlight failure after 55 minutes led to the games abandonment. The game will now be replayed on Tuesday 2nd May. The final regular league game of the Division Two North season took place on Monday night at Middlecliffe Lane, where Houghton Main were held to a 0-0 draw by South Kirkby Colliery Reserves. 100 & OUT FOR CHAMPIONS 2016/17 The Blades leave Sky Bet EFL League One 100 not out, following Sunday’s final-day victory over Chesterfield. In front of the biggest crowd at Bramall Lane since April 2008, goals from Kieron Freeman, Billy Sharp and Daniel Lafferty were enough to edge a five-goal thriller against the already relegated Spireites, as United became the first South Yorkshire club ever to reach a century of points. For Sunday’s final, Wright was recalled to the starting XI following illness and he replaced Wilson, who dropped to the bench. Also on the bench was fit again Hanson and youngster Brooks. Before kick-off, the Spireites sporting formed a guard of honour to welcome the Champions out of the tunnel and the capacity crowd literally lifted the roof prior to kick-off. Upon the first whistle, the party atmosphere continued, but it was the visitors who should have opened the scoring in the seventh minute, but Dennis fired wide of the target from inside
the penalty area. Mitchell was booked for a late tackle on Freeman, before United threatened Stuckmann’s goal for the first time, with Clarke holding off the attentions of Maguire before seeing his effort hit the top of the crossbar. At the other end, Dennis had another opportunity to score, but this time Moore saved at the expense of a corner. The Blades were now flexing their muscles and took the lead in front of the Kop in the 18th minute. Coutts won possessions high up the pitch and Stuckmann could only parry his cross into the six-yard boss, Sharp was denied by Maguire, but FREEMAN was on the spot to score his 11th of the season. With ten minutes of the first period remaining, a swift counter attack saw Sharp make room for a shot that appeared to be going in until the outstretched hand of Stuckmann pushed the ball onto the post and McGinn cleared the loose ball. From the resulting corner, O’Connell saw his back-post header saved. As half-time
approached, Clarke pulled up as though something was amiss as he tried to get the better of Anderson and the in-form striker was subsequently replaced by Hanson. But, with the last meaningful action of the half, Chesterfield levelled against the run of play from the penalty spot. DENNIS converted confidently, sending Moore the wrong way, after the goalkeeper had been adjudged to have fouled the advancing Mitchell. Early into the second period, Carruthers replaced Duffy, who received a warm hand, but it was the visitors who had started best, with Grimshaw volleying inches wide of the target after a corner wasn’t cleared fully. But with their first attack after the restart, United regained the lead. Carruthers found some space on the right and his cross was perfect for SHARP to head home his 30th of the campaign much to the delight of the vast majority of the 31,003 supporters inside the Lane. But the home fans were briefly silenced again six minutes later as Chesterfield
restored parity for a second time. Mitchell’s effort was blocked, but Grimshaw teed up MCGINN to fire home into the bottom corner. Before play restarted though, the visitors were reduced to tenmen with Gardner seeing a straight red after an off-the-ball clash with Sharp. With a numerical advantage for the remaining 21 minutes of the game, Wilder, not for the first time this season, made a positive change with Chapman replacing Wright and the Middlesbrough loanee almost had an immediate impact
lofting an effort over the top having got in behind Anderson. United pressing for that elusive third, came close twice in quick succession, with Sharp inches wide on both occasions, the second chance coming from Hanson’s flick on. Chesterfield introduced former Owl Humphreys and he could have scored within a minute, but he lob his effort over the bar after Moore had rushed off his line to deny Faupala. And that miss proved costly as the Blades went straight down the other and scored a third in the 82nd minute, with
LAFFERTY getting the better of Stuckmann with a left-footed effort from the edge of the penalty area. The clocking was ticking down and four minutes of added time was signalled, but not before the Blades nearly added a fourth as Stuckmann denied Chapman twice in quick succession. The aforementioned stoppage-time went without any incident of note and the final whistle meant it would be minutes until the Blades could finally get their hands on the Sky Bet EFL League One trophy.
TON-UP FOR WILDER could go the distance. In the end, United on the final day of the finished 14 points clear of 2nd and 18 season secured the landmark 100-points points clear of 3rd, a clear indicator for Chris Wilder’s of the supremacy side. It is unlikely that the Blades that the Blades will have had over their dominate a league in League One rivals. such a manner ever Inevitably, once the again. At one point, champagne reserves the promotion race run dry, the attention looked tight with will turn to next season. The summer many predicting it
WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH
In ordinary circumstances, the only Blade likely to score a century would be England skipper Joe Root. As every Sheffield United fan is aware, this hasn’t been an ordinary season. A final three points against Chesterfield
will be the first test of the owners spending power in the Championship. Prince Abdullah Bin Mosaad, the co-owner of the club, invested in the Blades with the aim of achieving promotion to the Premier League. First, the club must consolidate in the second tier. The
Championship is almost unrecognisable to when the club were last in the division in 2010/11. The top signing for a Championship club in that season was Martyn Waghorn’s move to Leicester City from Sunderland for £3m. In the current season,
Jonathan Kodjia joined Aston Villa for a fee rising to £15m. Villa will finish 10th at best with one game remaining in the Championship. If Prince Abdullah is to realise his top division dream, then he must back Wilder with significant funds over the summer.

WE’RE MAKING HISTORY - CARLOS Carlos Carvalhal said the Owls were making history following their 1-0 win against Ipswich at Portman Road, their sixth victory in a row. Kieran Lee’s second half finish secured a play-off spot for Wednesday, meaning they take part in the end of season lottery for the second season in a row. Carvalhal said: “I am
very happy with what we are achieving. “We are making history at the club, winning six games in a row, beating Ipswich away for the first time since 2012, we’ve also won at QPR since 2000 and beat Derby for the first time in a number of years this season. “Today we beat Mick’s side for the first time.
“The support of the chairman, the fans, and of course the staff has helped us to do this. “Now we will keep focusing on ourselves, we still have a game left to play before the playoffs and we want to win. “I don’t look to who we will play, or if we will be at home or away first, I just focus on ourselves and see what we can do.”
