TOWN MOOR TURF TO BE PAINTED PURPLE FOR YORKSHIRE CANCER CHARITY Weston Park Cancer Charity and Hospital is once again painting the town purple as it hosts a special race day at the town’s iconic Racecourse on Friday 2nd June. As part of the charity’s ongoing fundraising efforts, racegoers will be able to unite at Doncaster Racecourse and enjoy an evening of top class racing and entertainment as the town moor turf adopts the velvety undertones of the

colour purple – the colours of the charity. “Last year many racegoers wore purple in support of Weston Park and we hope that this year’s crowd will do the same again,” said Abby Chandler Group Marketing Manager Arena Leisure Corporation. “It promises to be a lovely early summer’s evening with a fantastic mix of quality racing and entertainment coupled with a fantastic atmosphere.

And, visitors can be assured that by enjoying an evening out they are also supporting a hugely important charity that not only cares for people with cancer but is one of only four dedicated cancer hospitals in England.” In addition to a packed race card, visitors can enjoy music from the PYT’s after racing. A 6-piece contemporary band that performs an exhilarating combination of rock,

pop, funk and soul to get everyone in the party mood. Darren Hayes Business Development Manager at Weston Park Cancer Charity commented; “Last year’s inaugural race day was a fantastic evening for everyone concerned and we hope that this year’s will be equally well supported. We ask the people of the region to come out and join us to help raise awareness and much needed funds

to support the local cancer network. Cliffhanger festival in the city centre rather than in a park, and this was an undoubted success. “The city centre location and the removal of an admission fee brought thousands more people to the event, including more young people, students, and those who perhaps wouldn’t otherwise have thought to try out activities such as bouldering, slacklining or skateboarding. “The location also ﬁts perfectly with

mountain biking, running, skateboarding, orienteering and much more. Once again, a star attraction will be the British Bouldering Championships, where the nation’s strongest male and female climbers will battle it out on a purpose-build bouldering wall in Devonshire Green. Gary Clifton, major events manager at Shefﬁeld City Council, said: “For the ﬁrst time last year, we decided to hold the ever-popular

7 July until Sunday, 9 July. Activities will kick off from 5pm on the Friday evening in Devonshire Green with an evening of live music, activities, demonstrations and refreshments from a range of food and drink outlets. Then, on Saturday and Sunday, Shefﬁeld will be transformed into a giant outdoor playground, with professional demonstrations and activities in sports including climbing,

Rock legends Iron Maiden continue their hugely successful The Book of Souls World Tour with a series of European arena shows stopping off in England for 8 dates including a Shefﬁeld Arena show Wednesday 10th May 2017. No further European cities will be added to this schedule for 2017. Maiden founder member and bass player Steve Harris says, “As it’s been so long since our last full UK arena tour, we really wanted to get to our fans in as many cities as possible. We’re really looking forward to it, especially visiting places we haven’t been to for a very long time like Leeds where we haven’t played since 2005 and Liverpool where we haven’t played since 1990. YOUR OLD FIVERS! DEMENTIA AWARENESS WEEK EVENTS What should you do if you still have an old fiver after 5th May? After Friday 5th May, shops won’t be able to accept them as payment for goods and services. Automated machines won’t be supposed to accept them either, though you may still find the odd one that does – it’ll depend on whether the software’s been updated in time. Most banks and building societies will continue to accept deposits of the older £5 note even after 5 May. Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds/Bank of Scotland, Nationwide and Santander all confirmed that they will accept deposits of the old £5 note from their own customers after Friday, while RBS went further and said it will exchange old £5 notes for non-customers too, for a “short window” following their withdrawal. Even better, the Post Office will accept deposits of old £5 notes after 5 May, from customers and non-customers. This is due to an agreement the Post Office has with all major UK banks which allows free day-to-day banking services at all of their branches. So if for example you’ve a Barclays account, you can use your local post office branch to deposit old £5 notes into that account. At the same time, it may be worth rooting out those old £1 coins! Again, these will cease to be legal tender on 15th October, and the Bank of England estimate that there are over £1.5 billion of old coins still in circulation - so make sure you check those change jars and piggy banks in your homes!

SIGNAL-BLOCKING BOX REMOVES DRIVER TEMPTATIONS A groundbreaking car appliance has the potential to eliminate in-car distractions such as calls, messages and mobile notifications. The prototype compartment, known as Signal Shield, has been developed by Japanese manufacturer Nissan and is said to block mobile phone signals. The RAC has welcomed the innovation, hailing the timely arrival of a “valuable mobile-free zone” for easily-distracted motorists. The device, a box, is built into the arm rest of Nissan’s Juke crossover vehicle. Based on the same scientific laws as the 19th century Faraday cage, it uses material such as a mesh wire to guard its contents from electromagnetic fields. As such, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and mobile signals cannot penetrate the box once closed. Since March 1 this year, illegal in-car phone use has been met with harsher penalties. Offending drivers now face fines of £200 and six points on their licence, after it was discovered that the practices are commonplace on our roads. In 2015, the proportion of drivers who admitted to using a hand-held device for calls behind the wheel rose to almost a third (31%), an RAC survey of more than 1,700 UK motorists showed. RAC road safety spokesman Pete Williams says the problem has reached “epidemic proportions”.

He says that, despite effectively disconnecting drivers from their usual outlets, the Signal Shield allows them to enjoy more control at the wheel, not less. “Some drivers are immune to the activity of their smartphone, but for those who struggle to ignore the beeps and pings, this concept provides a simple solution in this very connected world we live in.”

ANGLER’S CORNER

I’m fortunate enough to meet many anglers on the banks as I go about my weekly ventures, and during discussions, when it becomes apparent that I write about angling for a living now, one of the first questions I’m asked is; “…I’d love to do that, how do I get into it?” My good fortune lies solely at the feet of one man, a splendid, but now much missed gentleman, by the name of Kevin Green. Many readers will remember Kevin from his editorial in magazines such as ‘Improve Your Coarse Fishing’, and the many angling programmes he featured in which were shown on mainstream television. Unfortunately, many of us will also remember the sadness of his passing not too long ago. I first met Kev years ago at the ‘Go-Fishing Show’ as I wandered with my wife, where he was fronting the Korum ‘Search for a Star’ competition, with a prize of a contract with both Korum, and the publisher of IYCF magazine. The initial audition (for that is what it was) saw me join Kev behind a newsdesk, and read out prepared snippets of interest, to see how I came over on camera, before a brief chat enabled Kev to find out more about me. It went well, and subsequent rounds saw me get down to the last couple of hopefuls… The final hurdle came at Baden Hall Fishery in Staffordshire, where I had to prepare an ‘on the bank’ feature, and spent the day with Kev under a brolly as the rain teemed down. The feature was a dismal failure, as carp after carp interrupted my bream fishing, but Kev kept me entertained all day with stories from the angling trade, and I’d like to think we formed a friendship in those few hours. After that, Kev always took time to contact me and see what I was up to, ask whether I’d had any success with my writing, and would always spend a few minutes to chat at any show or event whenever we ran into each other. He sparked the interest in me that has led to me becoming a fulltime writer…. As far as I remember, Julian Chidgey (now also a friend) became the ‘Star’, and has since

done very well within the trade; we both have a lot to thank Kev for, and I’ll come back to that further on… This week, I have had issues with copyright of images. There is a right way and a wrong way to deal with these things, and as the angling community is quite small, if you get it wrong, it can have long term implications. You could do the official thing, reasonably request any images you own are removed from whichever media, or are paid for, and you can threaten all sorts of legal action, but the reality is, that unless deliberately done to gain financial advantage, or maliciously gain credit, it can be a costly and messy business, which leaves a very sour taste for all, and there are other ways to resolve things… This week, I received a message on social media which stated; “I thought you were with Angler’s Mail?” I replied that indeed I do contribute to Angler’s Mail, (amongst others) and wondered why I had been asked otherwise. “You’re in Angling Times this week mate, that’s why.” Awkward to say the least, but upon further investigation, I discovered that one of my images had been ‘lifted’ from Google to illustrate a fishery feature in a recent issue. Hmm…. As photographer, I know what I’m entitled to, and why I should get it. It’s a fundamental part of this business, and you must be prepared to fight your corner, so a polite (but firm) email was duly dispatched to the editor, to enquire whether they had sought, or been granted, permission, and why it had been used… Initially, I was a bit ‘put out’, but after an exchange of emails with a senior reporter, it became apparent that the image had been taken on the incorrect understanding that it belonged to one of their advertisers, and an apology was quickly issued for what was a genuine oversight. Unfortunately, the image was already in circulation, in print, and could not be retracted, so what would be the solution? I suppose I could have asked for a featured credit, payment, an additional premium for unauthorised use, and generally stamped my feet before submitting an invoice and threatening legal letter, but the image was out there, and in truth, it wasn’t a big image, didn’t cover the front page, and was used solely as an aside to the main article. More importantly, it was printed in good faith, although in error, at the last minute, and I got a bit of exposure out of it, so why not try and make it into a win/win situation? I called the reporter. An immediate apology for

If I’m honest, if I hadn’t been ‘with’ Angler’s Mail, I probably wouldn’t have questioned it, it’s an old image, and well past it’s sell by date, but I thought we could turn it into something good. As we continued our amicable discussions, I explained that Kev Green had given me my first break into writing, and knew he was well known at the publisher before his death, (indeed, the reporter also knew him) but that also, within my family, right now, as I write this, a close family member is also suffering the same affliction as Kev, a brain tumour, and it will have the same devastating outcome in the very near future. Having spent a day mulling the options, I decided to ask whether in lieu of any personal payment for use of the image, whether Angling Times would agree to make a donation to the Brain Tumour Charity (https://www. thebraintumourcharity.org/get-involved/donate/) on behalf of both us, which I thought would be a fitting way to remember the kind man who gave me a chance, resolve the situation amicably, and also do something for others suffering the same way; it just seemed appropriate… So, we did. To their great credit, Angling Times immediately, and without argument, sought to make amends for a genuine mistake, (we all make them) and instructed their accounts to make a payment, and forward the receipt. The cynics amongst us will probably think “…yes, bang to rights, what else could they do”, but that isn’t the point; the point is that if copyright is infringed, then photographers do have every right to request recognition, or payment, but this was an honest error, so why not turn it into something positive instead? Rather than an angry exchange of correspondence, costly and unpleasant legal action, and potentially long lasting ill will, I feel much better knowing that someone may benefit as a result of behaving professionally, from our small token of help, than I would if I’d got an extra few quid in my pocket… As I’ve said, the angling trade is a small world too, people often remember these things, so why not be reasonable about it instead of trying to be Billy Big Boots? As a result, everyone is happy; Angling Times keep their image, I get an apology, others may benefit from

the donation, and we both got a feel good ﬁllip as a result of mutual respect and understanding. Win, win all round if you ask me… but I would like to place on record my gratitude for the way it was dealt with by senior staff at Angling Times; I appreciate it… thank you to them, and thank you to Kev Green, who gave me a chance, and would, I hope, appreciate the sentiment…

EVANS REJOINS THE BLADES WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH Ched Evans is back at Bramall Lane. The Welsh international completed an unlikely return to the Blades on Monday and has signed a three-year deal. The fee has not been disclosed, but it is thought to be in the region of £500,000 plus add ons. On the move, Chris Wilder told the club website: “The signing is just one element of the plans we have drawn-up for next season. We have done our homework on the player. Ched comes to us with targets to achieve along the way. With a full pre-season with us we believe he can provide us with options up front and score goals.” Evans joins from Chesterfield, where he scored seven goals in 29 appearances in his first season back in the professional game. The 28-year-old said: “I am delighted to be back. I still feel I have plenty to prove in football both at club and international level and I believe I can achieve those goals at United, playing in front of the terrific fans whose support I have always appreciated.” The move has sparked a major debate amongst Blade fans, some question whether he has the ability to perform in the second tier, others are simply pleased to see one of the club’s most prolific strikers given another chance in red and white. Despite a disappointing season for Evans, which was marred by injury, Wilder obviously feels he can get the best out of the striker. The transfer is unlikely to stop the Blades returning to the transfer market before the Championship curtain rises, with Lee Gregory being linked with a move from Millwall.
