VISITING CRYSTAL PEAKS SHOPPING CENTRE? WHILE YOU'RE THERE WHY NOT CALL INTO THE NEW DRINK WISE, AGE WELL POP-UP SHOP?

Drink Wise, Age Well offer information, advice and activities all aimed at helping us make healthier choices about alcohol as we age. Whilst in the shop you can try out interactive games, which are aimed at highlighting some of the particular harms that can be caused by alcohol as we get older, as well as the benefits of making some changes to drinking patterns. Try on some 'beer goggles', pour yourself a 'drink' to measure how many units are in your usual tipple (how many of us would get that right?) and find out how many calories are hidden in the alcohol we drink. The team have lots of information and tips for making healthier choices about alcohol and can offer on-going support if needed. The shop also showcases a variety of activities and events that Drink Wise, Age Well have been running across Sheffield over the last two years which promote healthier ageing, keeping active, meeting new friends and

learning new skills for anyone aged 50 and over. Expect to see some arts and crafts, model making and healthy living sessions. There are also food and mood workshops, scent making, reminiscence and antiques groups running. You can sign up for some of Drink Wise, Age Well's regular city wide groups and activities, and the team can also give you information about other groups you might be interested in joining in your local community. Fancy volunteering? Drink Wise, Age Well are always looking for people to join the team. You can get information about the volunteering opportunities available and also meet some of the Drink Wise, Age Well volunteers who are helping run the shop. The team will be joined by other local charities and organisations including Sheffield Carers, the Alzheimers Society, Shelter, Neighbourhood Watch and Woodhouse and District Community Forum. So, there's plenty of people to talk to and useful information to collect.

The Drink Wise, Age Well campaign is typical of the sort of community focused campaign regularly supported by Crystal Peaks. The award winning shopping centre takes great pride in its strong links with the surrounding neighbourhood, working with local schools, community organisations and charities whilst encouraging both centre staff and visitors to engage in both fundraising and awareness campaigns. In 2017 Crystal Peaks are focusing on improving Health and Wellbeing for all its stakeholders. Drink Wise, Age Well's pop up shop is located opposite Iceland in Crystal Peaks until 18th June. Opening hours are 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday (except 27th and 29th May).

ALBERT SNODGRASS I took the shell off my racing snail to give him a weight advantage. It did not work, if anything it made him more sluggish. I showed the damaged remains of my luggage to my lawyer. I said ‘I want to sue the airline’ He replied ‘You don’t have much of a case’. The Beach Boys walk into a bar..... ‘Round?’ ‘Round?’ ‘Get a round’ ‘I get a round?’ ‘Get a round.....’ Whenever it rains, my wife just stands at the window looking kind of sad. Maybe I should let her in! So after winning the game, I decided to throw the ball into the crowd, like they do on the T.V. Apparently, it’s unacceptable in bowling.

Hallam FM’s Cash for Kids charity has this week launched The Big Audition, a talent competition offering a once in a lifetime opportunity for a local band or solo artist to win a profile boosting package worth over £5,000 including a ‘golden ticket’ to perform at several high profile events. The fundraising campaign, sponsored by Diamond Live Lounge Doncaster and backed by The Mercury, will see the best act crowned at the live final event, held at the 02 Academy in Sheffield on September 29. Registration is now open and the judging panel will shortlist a variety of sound clips and videos submitted by the hopeful acts who are looking for an opportunity to get noticed across the local music industry and increase their fan base. The panel will compile a shortlist and as many as twenty acts will be invited to perform at the semifinal event at the Diamond Live Lounge in Doncaster performing in front of as many as 500 people. Judges on the night will pick ten acts to make it through to the final. The route to the final will include drumming up support and fundraising for Cash for Kids. Each act will be judged on how much is raised throughout the summer, with those raising the most money receiving a slight advantage on the judges’ cards ahead of their performance at the final event, which will see them perform

in front of as many as 1,800 people at the Sheffield City Centre venue. All the money raised by the finalists and the ticket revenue from both live events will all be donated to Cash for Kids, a grant giving charity that supports sick and disadvantaged children across South Yorkshire. The winner will be crowned The Big Audition champion on the night and will receive a prize package, which includes a photoshoot, website, video shoot, studio time and a 12-month record deal, which will see their tracks released on digital platforms including Google Play and iTunes. The package also includes guaranteed appearances as a warm up act at upcoming events at The Leadmill, Diamond Live Lounge and will feature at music festivals Live in Barnsley and Beanfest in 2018. Allan Ogle, charity manager for Cash for Kids, said: “Some of the world’s biggest musicians come from South Yorkshire and this is a fantastic opportunity to kick start the career for one local act. “We can’t thank everyone enough who has donated towards the incredible prize package to make this happen. We’re excited to not only celebrate the local music heritage but everyone donating or buying a ticket to one of the events will be helping sick and disadvantaged children where we live.”

Sheffield City Council is asking more families to help change the lives of children and young people throughout the city by becoming foster carers. The call for more carers comes during Foster Care Fortnight, which runs nationally until Sunday 21 May. In Sheffield there are 275 fostering households who look after more than 265 children. Diane from Sheffield has fostered 13 children and young people over the past five years. Working as a teacher and a youth worker for the past 20 years Diane had always wanted to foster and knew what an amazing difference foster care can make to a young person’s life. As her own three children were getting older, she had a spare room, and she found she had a lot more time on her hands and so decided to give fostering a go. At the moment Diane is looking after two young children, two teenagers as well as her own children. Diane said: “I love it – particularly working with teenagers. The teenagers I have looked after often come to me with no boundaries. But as soon as you give them some rules, as well as the respect and trust they deserve, you get a great response. “I am very active carer and I really champion the teenagers’ rights and needs. I’m on their side and I’m prepared to speak out for them wherever they need the support.” As well as being a foster carer Diane is also a mentor to other foster carers who are working with teenagers. She said: “I want to dispel the myth that teenagers in care are more difficult to look after. They just need boundaries in place and to be treated with respect. “If people are thinking about it but are unsure, I want to reassure them that they can do it, even if they haven’t had experience of bringing up teenagers. “With the right support people can help make a real difference to these young people’s lives.” “One girl came into my care when she was 10 on a long-term placement. She couldn’t read or write at all. Three-and –a-half years later she can now read and write in three languages. She is heavily involved in school life and she even helps me with some of the other children that come into my care. “Seeing what caring can do for people has been transformational for her and now she wants to be a foster carer when she grows up.” Joel Hanna, Assistant Director for Children, Young People and Families at Sheffield City Council, said “The foster carers in our city do a brilliant job. We need many more people to become foster carers – it’s rewarding and can be challenging but those that do become foster carers can and will change lives. “Please get in touch if you’d like to find out more details – we’d be delighted to hear from you. He added “I’d like to take the opportunity during Foster Care Fortnight to say a big ‘thank you’ to all foster carers for the wonderful job they do.” For more information go to sheffield.gov.uk/fostering or come along to meet our team and foster carers like Diane at our information evening on 24 May, 5.45pm-8pm at Quaker Meeting House. You can call Ruth to register 0114 273 5075.

WEDDING DAY ETIQUETTE A wedding is neither the time nor the place to ditch the decorum — so mind your manners and win your wedding guests over with UKbride's education in etiquette...

Weddings are an ancient custom steeped in tradition, and thus should be celebrated with equal measures of enthusiasm and etiquette. If you're flummoxed by formalities, and puzzled by polite protocol, read on to discover the dos and don'ts of decency! For guests: In the first instance, guests should accept, or decline, the wedding invitation by the RSVP date stipulated on the invite. Once you accept, you are obliged to attend — no last minute changing of plans (unless there is an emergency of course!) When choosing an outfit, it is vital to remember that a bride is the star of the show. It's her day — and as a guest you must not outshine her! Wearing white — or anything remotely bridal in style for that matter — is a big no-no! Arriving punctually for the ceremony is another must — it is extremely rude to walk in after the bride, and what's more, you'll miss the best bits of the marriage itself! It is also considered polite for guests to buy the couple a gift, often from a gift list compiled by the bride and groom prior to their wedding. For bride and groom: The groom and his best man should arrive at the venue at least 20 minutes prior to the ceremony's start. The bride travels to the church with her father. The father of the bride also has the responsibility of making the first

speech, and traditionally he should be the last person to leave the reception.

Your vicar will normally advise on the correct order of service, but usually the ceremony progresses as follows: Introductory medley; entrance of the bride, (or processional); hymns; marriage vows and prayers; hymn or psalm blessing; signing of the register; recessional. Upon leaving the ceremony, the exit of the wedding party should be in the order of: bride and groom, chief bridesmaid and best man, mother and father of the bride, mother and father of the groom, bridesmaids and attendants, followed by the remaining guests. At the reception, the groom is expected to introduce his bride to any friends or family she has not met before. He must also always thank the bride's parents in his speech and include a toast to the bridesmaids. Seating your guests however, is perhaps the toughest task when it comes to wedding etiquette, and tackling the top table can be particularly tricky! A traditional format seats the bride and groom together in the centre. The bride is seated on the groom's left. To the bride's left is her father, the groom's mother, and the best man. To the groom's right is the bride's mother, the groom's father, and chief bridesmaid. Alternatives for weddings where the bride's parents are divorced, still seats the bride and groom in the centre, but to the bride's left, is her father, the groom's mother, the best man, and the bride's stepmother. Similarly, to the groom's right sits the bride's mother, groom's father, chief bridesmaid, and,

Wedding Guide

on the far right the bride's stepmother. A similar model can be applied if it the groom's parents who are divorced and re-married.

SIGNED FOOTBALL BANNER GIVES MAYOR’S CHARITIES A BOOST Sheffield United football manager Chris Wilder has shown he’s a good sport by signing the banner which celebrated the Blades’ promotion for the Lord Mayor’s charity. The Blades boss put his name, and the initials UTB, to the banner which hung outside Sheffield’s Town Hall when the Blades celebrated their return to the championship last week. The banner will now be auctioned off for one of the Lord Mayor’s chosen charities. The Lord Mayor’s office is inviting sealed bids for the banner by the end of May, to lordmayor@sheffield. gov.uk Councillor Denise Fox, Lord Mayor of Sheffield, said: “It’s great that Chris has signed this banner which will mean so much to Sheffield United fans across the city – we’ll hopefully raise a considerable amount for charity. SUMMER’S COMING - GET AHEAD OF HAY FEVER! Spring and summer are the seasons everyone looks forward to most – apart from allergy sufferers, who often look at the brighter months with trepidation! Don’t resign yourself to being stuck indoors now that allergy season is upon us, use our top advice for beating the worst of it and get out to enjoy the great outdoors. Stay ahead of the counts These days, keeping abreast of pollen counts is easier than ever. From weather segments on the news to comprehensive websites, there’s plenty of ways to stay informed. If you have a smartphone, be sure to download handy apps like Claritin’s Pollen Forecast UK for iPhones and the Pollen Forecast App from A. Vogel. Shift your schedule The pollen count is often at its highest between 5am and 10am, so if at all possible, it’s a great idea to change your schedule for the warmer months and stay

inside as much as possible during peak hours. And when the weather is cold and rainy, get out there and do as many chores as you can. Give acupuncture a try Some allergy sufferers find that a course of acupuncture can help to alleviate their symptoms. It’s not a one of cure for the problem, but a course of treatment may help you feel better during the warmer months, according to research published in the European Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. Make your home a pollen-free zone You’ll find it easier to enjoy the time you do spend outside if you ensure that your home offers a respite from pollen. Don’t be tempted to leave windows or doors open and focus on cleaning the areas where allergens can accumulate, such as in your bedding and carpets. Change out of your clothes as soon as you get home and try taking a shower before you head to bed.

Keep your nose clear You can also help to reduce the negative effects of pollen by making it harder for it to stick around. Buy a nasal saline and rinse your nasal passages two or three times a day and you may be able to reduce congestion and improve sinus drainage. Vaseline Spreading a thin layer of Vaseline inside the lower nostrils can help combat hay fever and reduce symptoms significantly. The Vaseline traps pollen entering the nostrils, effectively blocking it from entering the nasal passages and stopping hay fever symptoms from worsening. See your doctor If you haven’t already seen a professional to discuss your options, make sure you do. They may be able to inform you about medications or nasal sprays that you can try and will be able to offer advice and help to get you through the warmer months.

FOSTERING SHORTAGE PIP & DLA REPORT HATE HURTS CAMPAIGN More than 600 new foster families are needed in Yorkshire and the Humber during the coming year to ensure that all children can be found the right foster home first time, according to leading fostering charity The Fostering Network at the start of this year’s Foster Care Fortnight (8-21 May). The need is particularly for families to offer homes to teenagers and groups of brothers and sisters. The new figures, calculated by The Fostering Network, show that 7,180 families are needed across the UK, with at least 610 of those being in Yorkshire and the Humber. In addition, the charity found that 97 per cent fostering services have a particular need for foster carers for teenagers and 86 per cent fostering services have a particular need for foster carers for sibling groups. In Yorkshire and the Humber, well over half of looked after children are teenagers and, across England, there are 455 groups of siblings who have been separated despite being assessed to live together, with 30 of these being in Yorkshire and the Humber. The survey also revealed a growing need for more parent and child foster carers, with 57 per cent of fostering services identifying a need in this area. Kevin Williams, chief executive of The Fostering Network said: ‘A child comes into care in need of a foster family every 20 minutes in the UK. Without more foster families in Yorkshire and the Humber coming forward during 2017, and especially people who could foster teenagers and siblings, some children will find themselves living a long way from family, school and friends, being split up from brothers and sisters, or being placed with a foster carer who might not have the right skills and experience to meet their specific needs.

The ‘Personal Independence Payment and the reassessment of Disability Living Allowance claimants’ report appraises the introduction of PIP for people already receiving DLA. Since its introduction in June 2016 for those aged 16-64, there have been many reports of serious impacts on those being migrated to the new system, with complaints being levied at those agencies tasked with reassessment of recipients’ circumstances. The report draws attention to some serious concerns, including about the impact of this change on some older people, the difficulties people with mental health problems and deaf people have with this transition, the quality of DWP decision making and the overall consequences of reduced or nil awards. We make a number of recommendations for changes that would, we believe, go some way towards mitigating these consequences. Read the report at: https://citizensadvicesheffield.org.uk/ wp-content/uploads/2017/04/PIP-andthe-reassessment-of-DLA-claimantsApril-2017.pdf

DRIVE FOR LIFE PROJECT WINS ANOTHER AWARD

Driver Focus event. In addition to the category award, the ‘Challenge’ was shortlisted in two other categories. Project Manager John Scruby said “This is another fantastic achievement for the Drive for Life team after a very busy year, where the project has been delivered to over 7,000 sixth form students, apprentices and sports academy students throughout the County. The Drive for Life Challenge has been an outstanding success and the feedback from the users has shown this to be a valuable asset to the project as a whole. We are incredibly proud of this achievement”. Joanne Wehrle, Safer Roads Education Manager added: “The 17-24 age group is a particularly vulnerable one, with so many new and inexperienced drivers taking to the roads. This app is one of the innovative approaches the Safer Roads Partnership uses to engage younger drivers with our road safety message, alongside our long-running Drive for Life training programme. We are delighted that it has been recognised with this award and would encourage everyone, regardless of how long they have been driving, to have a go. “Drivers of all ages can help keep themselves and their friends and family safer by following a few simple rules: always wear your seat belt for every journey; always drive within the speed limit and to the conditions (sometimes driving at the speed limit will be too fast); don’t drink and drive; don’t use your mobile phone at the wheel.”

Drive for Life, the young driver intervention project delivered by the South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership and coordinated by Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council, has again been recognised in the First Car National Road Safety awards. At the prestigious RAC club in Pall Mall, London this month, the project team received a bronze award in the ‘Education and Training Initiative’ category, for the Drive for Life Challenge. The ‘Challenge’, an interactive app, was developed 18 months ago to compliment the already award winning project. The app is based around video clips depicting a day out with a number of young people. The user is shown a number of clips containing various dangers and hazards which they are asked to identify. At the conclusion, a short feedback video accompanies the score, with an invitation to take the challenge again to improve your score. Although aimed at novice drivers, anyone can take part. The app has received excellent feedback from over 10,000 users to date, and the development team are already looking towards a supplementary version utilising the latest virtual reality technology. The app can be accessed by phone or laptop This is the second consecutive year that the at www.driveforlifechallenge.co.uk project has been recognised at the Young

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

You know when you have one of those weeks when everything goes right? That’s me, last week; it appears I could do no wrong, and as a result, I had a thoroughly enjoyable time! That estate lake I’ve mentioned in the past? The tough one, where a couple of bites per day is considered good going? Owned it. I’m not kidding, I’ve had an absolute field day on there, got the pictures, worn the T-shirt, and it was completely unexpected… I turned up bright and early, to find not a soul on the lake, which is unheard of this time of year, so I had my pick of the pegs. I chose to set up once again in Peg One, from where I had taken a trio of hefty bream on my last visit. This time however, it was an all-out method feeder attack, so rather than maggots and the quivertip, I’d taken a pair of Sonik S3 Specialist rods, nice and responsive, with a 1.5lb test curve; just enough to get a small method ball out to the required distances, but not to beefy to negate any fun I might have when latched into a tench or decent bream at range. I swiftly wet a mixture of Spotted Fin Krill groundbait and tiny pellets, combined them, and left it to soak up any excess moisture whilst I got the rods out. I opted for a simple set up, a small method feeder, size 8 swivel, and a pre-tied Guru hair rigs; a short, 4” mono hook length, terminating in a size 12 hook and bait band. That was it; the swivel pushed into the feeder provide some resistance, both feeders had Krill groundbait crushed around them, and on the hook, I banded an 8mm wafter, before hurling them out into open water… a ‘pub chuck’ if you like… Not quite. I know that a sandbar runs from right to left in this swim, and I’d already noted bream rolling over the top, so one feeder lay at the base of the obstruction, and the second was launched as near as I could get it to a bed of succulent bloodworm which the head bailiff had mentioned during a previous visit. Both lines were left to sink, the bobbins clipped up, and I made camp. I’d hoped for cloud cover, but as the day progressed, the sky became brighter, the sun shone incessantly, and the temperatures got higher; not ideal conditions for bream or tench, but who cares, it was blissful, the birds kept me entertained, and there was much else to admire about this stunning fishery… Bleep. The bobbin quivered, and slowly inched upwards… then dropped to the floor. Another bleep, and the bobbin lifted again, then dropped back once more. And again. Bream, had to be. I swept the rod skywards to pick up sixty yards of line, and felt the soft thud of a

bream as it rolled once in the shallow water. As usual, it surrendered easily, but at 6lb, it was a nice fish to start with, and was quickly unhooked and photographed. With the bream supported in the sling to return it, as I walked to the water’s edge, the other bobbin rocketed off, and the alarm sang (well, the receiver, I’m deaf as a post, so have it vibrating in my pocket!) as a chubby tench took off with my hook bait. This one took a couple of minutes, but was safely landed and weighed at 5lb 2oz; a fine fish indeed! I got both rods back in, and picked up my book… Roughly every thirty minutes, my relaxation was disturbed by another fish. I lost a decent bream at range, but my total for the day, despite the conditions, was seven good bream between 6 lb and 7lb 8oz, and seven tench, all ounces either side of 5lb. Fourteen fish, and one lost! On this venue, that counts as a rare result, so I packed up, returned to the van, and drove home… just as the first spots of rain hit the windscreen… result! The day after, the temperatures had plummeted, a brisk northerly wind had sprung up, leaving a proper chill in the air. The water I intended to target doesn’t fish well after a change in the weather, so I wasn’t that hopeful, and set up in a peg which offered more in the way of shelter from the bitter wind, than it did in fish catching potential. My set up was exactly the same as the day before, a small method feeder packed with bait, lowered into the margins in front of me. The Sonik S3 Specialist will easily cope with my intended target, carp to 20lb, and is soft enough that I don’t lose many fish under the rod tip when fishing at point blank range. It slows the first big run into open water, and then when the fish is beaten, absorbs any last minute lunge beneath the rod tip; it is probably my favourite rod at the moment, fun, yet with a bit of grunt… The wind was biting, so as I sat huddled beneath the brolly, I thought I’d give it a couple of hours to see what happened. Within ten minutes, my first fish, a low double, was swiftly returned to the depths, the rig reset, and I nestled back under shelter. For five minutes. Another good double took off across the lake, and I stepped out into the wind to deal with it. Brrr! Two fish in the first fifteen minutes, wasn’t in the script, I had hoped for the odd one, and was surprised with two together. Thirty minutes elapsed before another screaming take (well, the vibrations made me jump!) and a third double figure fish was tamed; highly unusual on this water after a cold night! A fourth take saw me in contact with a fish which plodded about in deeper water some forty yards out. It gave the slow thudding head shake of a big mirror, but I couldn’t gain line; this one had me on the ropes! There is, like at many waters, a ‘mythtery’ fish, often reputed to go over 30lb, it’s been caught by many, but photographed by none, and it’s always a ‘mate of a mate’ who caught it, but forgot the camera (or the scales!) each time. I call them ‘mythtery’ fish (mainly because I used to like Toyah Wilcox, a flame haired siren of my 1980’s with a strangely attractive lisp) but they are fish of myth and mystery. it was still pulling back hard. It wouldn’t come up in the water, it wouldn’t come closer, but I felt in control, and was confident (and curious) to see what I presume was very big mirror carp. By now, the wind was making my mainline sing as it quivered under the pressure, a sound which always takes me back to a forty-five minute battle on a size 20 hook to 2lb bottom with a fish I never saw before it snapped me some thirty years ago as a junior… I still love that sound. Sadly, it ended abruptly. With a huge surge of energy, the fish pulled away again, and as the line wailed in the wind, the hook pulled out! The loss of pressure on the other end is always an awful feeling, but this one truly had me intrigued…was it the ‘mythtery’ after all? I’ll just have to keep trying… The day got better however, with a gentleman visitor I’ll call Keith (because that was his name) who popped in to see me, (whilst his wife shivered on a nearby bench) to spend a few minutes in pleasant chatter, which is always appreciated, and the fishing didn’t let up either whilst we gossiped. By the end of the day, I’d amassed a total

of around 23 carp, all but one a double, a single bream, and a solitary still-water barbel (forgive me) which, by my reckoning, worked out at somewhere in the region of 275-300lb of fish; not bad on a single rod water, in bitterly cold conditions! I really can’t moan at that can I, although I’m still determined to catch a glimpse of that ‘mythtery’…. Maybe one day? I hope so, after all, that’s why we go back isn’t it?

THOMAS EXCITED ABOUT THE FUTURE United’s newest recruit Nathan Thomas says he is ‘honoured’ to have the opportunity to play for the Blades. The 22-year-old signed a three-year contract at Bramall Lane on Monday after United paid Hartlepool an undisclosed fee for his services and the winger is excited about what the future holds for him at S2. Speaking after putting pen-to-paper, Thomas remarked: “I’m here to work hard, improve my game and progress at a great football club. “When you speak to the manager and other people here, they are really ambitious and want to keep pushing forward. They aren’t ahead of themselves but they’re ambitious and that’s good. “I didn’t have to be persuaded to join, the things they said to me, I bought into it straight away.” United fought off competition from elsewhere for the signature of Thomas, who added: “The people here

seem really friendly and I have just got a really good feeling about the club as a whole “Obviously on the pitch, what happened last season speaks for itself. The same goes for the stadium and the fans. “This is a brilliant opportunity for me. One that I’m honoured to have and aim to make the most of. “I am attack minded, I like to get on the ball, run at defenders and cause carnage.”

Rotherham United this week officially revealed their new home kit for the 2017/18 season, once again manufactured by Puma Teamwear. Keeping with popular tradition, the new red home shirt will again incorporate the widely recognised white sleeves, and for the second consecutive year the Club’s shirt will be sponsored by Hodge Clemco. The modern look and fit includes a stylised ribbed collar with a single button placket which gives a clean contemporary look. The latest kit, modelled here by Anthony Forde, has been made with lightweight polyester which includes moisture wicking technology that is designed to quickly draw sweat away from the body, keeping you drier and cooler for longer. There is also a textured underarm panel designed for increased movability.

ROVERS ACADEMY Eight Doncaster Rovers academy players have been offered first year scholarships by academy manager Kieran Scarff. Rieves Boocock joined the club in 2009 and has progressed through the youth academy structure, Cameron Barnet has been at Rovers since the age of 10 and will be heading into his eighth year with the club. Myron Gibbons and Cameron Baldock-Smith have already made two and six appearances in the u18s side respectively. The other four scholars are, Cameron Foulkes, Anthony Greaves, Brandon Horton and Declan Ogley and all players have signed two year scholarships. “We are really pleased with the level of potential these individuals have shown over the past few months,” said Scarff. “They have a real opportunity to develop at a football club that provides a genuine pathway towards the first team. “We are looking forward to working with all these players and looking to fulfil their potential.” Doncaster Rovers have also expressed an interest in returning to the Development League for the 2017/18 campaign, subject to acceptance from the Football League.

The final game before United begin life in the Championship, will be against National League outfit Eastleigh FC at Ten Acres on Friday 28th July. Ticket details for all the aforementioned fixtures will follow, as will details of all development squad friendlies.

United’s senior domestic pre-season programme can be confirmed. Earlier this week, Stoke City were announced as the opposition for United’s only home fixture of the campaign, with the Potters visiting Bramall Lane on Tuesday 25th July, kick-off 7.45pm. Preparations will begin, as they did last summer, with a fixture against Stocksbridge Park Steels at the Look Local Stadium on Saturday 8th July, prior to the players heading abroad for a week where they are expected to play one fixture, which will be confirmed in due course. Upon returning to the country, United will face Chesterfield at the Proact Stadium on Tuesday 18th July and Rotherham United at the New York Stadium on Friday 21st July.

Manager Paul Warne is expecting the future of loan ace Tom Adeyemi to have been concluded by the end of the month. The Cardiff City midfielder enjoyed a productive spell at the AESSEAL New York Stadium this season, scoring seven goals in 30 appearances in all competitions. His impressive form prompted boss Warne to put an offer to him for a permanent switch to South Yorkshire, but the former Norwich and Birmingham operator has taken many an admiring glance over the previous 12 months. Whilst Warne acknowledges that keeping the 25year-old will be tough, he has stated the Club have made him a good offer with a decision on his future likely in the next few weeks. “The offer we made to Tom was pretty impressive,” Warne told www.themillers.co.uk “He’s a really honest kid, and I think realistically his future is in The Championship. Both him and his agent have said to me that if they don’t get a Championship move he wouldn’t have any hesitation about coming back here and playing for us.” Warne has enjoyed a fruitful relationship with one of his top performers from last season, and has hinted that if a move to The Championship didn’t materialise, this could be a big pulling factor in potentially bringing him back to the AESSEAL New York Stadium. In the meantime, the Millers boss is pressing ahead on other fronts whilst he waits for Adeyemi’s decision, which he expects will arrive in the next two weeks. “If Tom does move on he will go with our blessing and I thank him for what he did here, and maybe our paths cross later on in our careers,” he added. “Tom is going to have to think over a few offers, so I would expect that he would have had his future sorted out by the end of this month.” Warne revealed at the back end of last week that he expects to have heard something on the three contract offers made to Richard Wood, Richie Smallwood and Joe Mattock by the end of this week. Striker Jonson Clarke-Harris has already committed himself to a new deal with the Club.

THOMAS JOINS THE BLADES WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH Sheffield United might be in a different league next season, but the approach from Chris Wilder is yet to change. Nathan Thomas joins Ched Evans in being United’s first summer recruits. Wilder tends to sign players with a point to prove, and the duo of Thomas and Evans certainly fit this bill. Thomas joins from Hartlepool United, the 22-year-old winger was a bright spark in a miserable campaign for the relegated side. He joins on a three-year deal for a fee reported to be around £300,000. On the move Chris Wilder said: “Nathan is someone we have tracked for a long time and is a talented young player. He was Hartlepool’s outstanding player last season and we believe, in our environment, he has the ability to push on to the next level, like a few that we brought in last season did.” The Blades were able to beat Middlesbrough to his signature, a sign of the faith Thomas has in the Blades next season. Speaking to the club website, Thomas said: “I’m aware that Chris Wilder has tried to sign me before and I enjoyed speaking to him. I didn’t want this dragging on through the summer, I knew what I wanted to do and now I can concentrate on getting my head down at the start of pre-season.” United’s squad does not enjoy a plethora of wingers, the side lacked pace at times last season. The winger could be deployed in a similar fashion to Harry Chapman, coming from the bench to stretch the opposition. Blades fans will welcome the fact that business is being done early, a clear sign that Wilder has planned these signings for a considerable time. Nobody wants a repeat of the hectic deadline days of the past.

IMPACT OF THE FANS The Owls and Huddersfield are set to meet again on Wednesday night at Hillsborough following today’s 0-0 draw in the play-off semi final first leg. Ahead of the allimportant second clash in midweek, Carlos Carvalhal has recalled the influence of the supporters during last season’s semi finals.

Wednesdayites made it an S6 occasion to remember and the head coach insists they will be every bit as vital this time around. Carlos said: “The crowd in semi finals make a big impact, we have experience of this last season. “We know how much our supporters helped us to beat Brighton. “We also know exactly what we felt in our bodies when we went

to Brighton, especially in the first 20-25 minutes. “Today was the same at Huddersfield and credit to the crowd for the way they helped their team a lot. “Our supporters will be crucial for sure.” Pleased with many aspects of the first leg, he continued: “One purpose of this game was to put the game alive at Hillsborough. “At the end of the day

2016/17

we now have a final at Hillsborough on Wednesday and we will be ready to the game. “It was fantastic team work today, the way they played with heart to try to achieve something. “On Wednesday at 7.45pm, again, it will be 11 players v 11 players with a referee and one ball and we must do our job because I am sure the fans will do theirs.”

SPECIAL NIGHT AHEAD Jack Hunt has called on the fans to give one final push to the players at Hillsborough on Wednesday as the Owls battle out the play-off semi final second leg. The tie is evenly poised after Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Huddersfield at The

John Smith’s Stadium. But with the second leg staged under the lights at a sold out Hillsborough, Hunt believes a special night lies ahead. “If you had offered us one game at the start of the season to get to the play-off final at home in

front of our fans, then I think most of us would have taken it,” he said. “We’re focused on making our fans and everyone associated with the club happy and going back to Hillsborough in front of our fans, we are confident.
