DONCASTER SET FOR HISTORIC FLY-PAST FOR ARMED FORCES DAY Doncaster is set to be treated to a ﬂy past by the historic Lancaster Bomber on Saturday 24 June, to celebrate Armed Forces Day in the town. The Lancaster, one of the most famous military planes in the world, will ﬂy over Doncaster town centre on Armed Forces Day as people from across the borough gather together to honour the servicemen and

women of the armed forces. A Lancaster Bomber hasn’t been spotted over Doncaster in six years, so the ﬂy past on the 24 June will provide an extremely rare chance to see one over the streets of our town. The plane that will be ﬂying over Doncaster is the only airworthy Bomber in the UK, and is known as ‘Thumper’. Thumper will follow up St

Sepulchre Gate in the town centre towards Doncaster Market, where she will turn right towards the High Street, turning right again past the Mansion House and over Clock Corner before flying out of Doncaster borough. Before the fly past, there will be a march of servicemen and women from Sir Nigel Gresley square at 11am in to town, finishing outside the

front of the Frenchgate Centre. The ﬂy past will then follow at approximately 12:35pm, and large crowds are expected to gather throughout the town centre for the event. Debbie JohnLewis, Interim Assistant Director of Communities, said: “This is a truly wonderful opportunity for Doncaster – to have one of the most famous and well-loved

aircraft on earth flying over our town for Armed Forces Day is a complete honour. We are excited to welcome people from far and wide for this chance to catch a rare glimpse of the famous Lancaster in flight, and are sure that it will be a fitting way to honour the Armed Forces who have given so much to protect our freedom.”

The role will involve you meeting with them once a week for an hour or two – you might walk to the shops together to pick up some milk, get on the bus to go into town, get a cup of tea in a local café,

or go to the football. You’ll be supporting them to raise their confidence, knowledge, and independence, and you’ll both be having a great time together. Here’s what one of our volunteers, Steve Beard, has to say: “I have volunteered as an Age Better in Sheffield Access Ambassador for about 4 months now, and I find it both really

rewarding and fulﬁlling. 100 YEARS OLD - AND KATH’S ONLINE! MOVE MORE MONTH

Kathleen is staying in touch with relatives down south after learning to Skype video call at our internet help sessions. A keen artist specialising in oil and watercolour painting, Kathleen also keeps active by going to the gym at Ponds Forge through the discount deal offered by the Friends of Age UK Sheffield scheme. But, it is the scheme’s internet and IT sessions that have particularly benefited Kathleen by teaching her to ‘Skype’ relatives in Oxfordshire using her tablet device.. Kathleen said, “the sessions have helped me keep in touch with my relatives that are living down south and it gives them peace of mind to hear form me.” She was taught how to video call by Age UK Sheffield digital inclusion volunteer.

Andy Callard, business development manager at Age UK Sheffield, said: “When Kathleen first used Skype and saw her niece on screen on her tablet device she simply said, ‘oh my goodness’! It was a wonderful reaction and it made my day. “While we know social isolation can be a big issue for the older community, digital exclusion is increasingly becoming the big issue to tackle because so much of our modern life and communications takes place online.” The IT and technological sessions, which are free to members of Friends of Age UK Sheffield scheme, are held at The Crucible Theatre Café Bar between 1pm and 3pm every third Thursday of every month. GLORIOUS MUSIC IN A MAGICAL SETTING The award-winning Bradfield Festival of Music is an annual celebration of music performed in the Parish Church of St Nicholas’, a historic 16th century church set in the beautiful landscape of High Bradfield, Sheffield, within the Peak District National Park. 2017 will be the 20th Festival since its revival in 1998; evidence from the Bradfield Parish archives shows that a music festival was held in the Parish Church on Whit Monday in 1813, 1825 and 1835. Little did those festival organisers of 200 years ago know that a week-long festival would be happening in the same church today. During the first two years of the revived Festival the programme was largely comprised of performances by locally based musicians and singers. New ground was broken in 2000 when, for the first time, the Lindsay String Quartet was engaged as the “headline act”. Following that experience the Festival began to include better known artistes in its programmes and in 2004 Julian Lloyd Webber, now the Festival’s President, performed for the first time at Bradfield. The Festival now attracts the finest artistes from all over the world who, collectively perform a wide range of music genres within the classical tradition. There is a strong connection between the Festival and young musicians and annual awards are presented to the two most promising young musicians based at the Sheffield Music Hub. As well as prize money, the Award Winners are given the opportunity to perform at one of the concerts. MILLIONS UNSURE OF SMART MOTORWAY HARD SHOULDER USE More than half of UK drivers are unfamiliar with how to use emergency refuge areas (ERAs) on smart motorways, new RAC research reveals. Although the first smart motorway came into force over 10 years ago, many drivers do not encounter them on a regular basis, and feel in the dark about the potentially life-saving “safe haven” provided by ERAs. Increasingly, the hard shoulder on such highways is used as a running lane for traffic, either consistently or just during the most congested times of day. But the RAC study, which questioned over 2,000 drivers, discovered that 52% didn’t know that the lanes act as a refuge for accident stricken or broken down vehicles, in the absence of a hard shoulder. Furthermore, almost two-thirds (64%) are not aware of the correct procedure for what to do once stopped, and a similar amount (65%) not sure how to re-join traffic. Also among the disturbing findings, it was discovered that only one respondent (from the overall 1.5% who had actually used an ERA) knew they needed to

contact Highways England to help them back onto the motorway, if the hard shoulder was operating as a running lane. The rest assumed they had to wait for a gap in trafﬁc and dangerously accelerate to reach motorway speed. On the positive side, almost a clean sweep (98%) knew that ERAs should be used in the case of a breakdown, and 90% after accident. However, 40% thought it was appropriate to use them for medical reasons, while 27% thought they were a good spot for carsick passengers to be sick. Thankfully, only 1% thought they were a good option for rest stops, toilet breaks, nappy changing or phone calls. Highways England has run a radio advertising campaign reminding people of the correct use of emergency refuge areas and is currently conducting a review of ERAs, the ﬁndings of which will be reported in due course.

ANGLER’S CORNER

This week started off with a huge amount of delicious anticipation; a 5lb perch was a possibility, according to the information which had just turned up in my personal messages on Facebook. You just can’t turn your nose at the opportunity to fish for such magnificent beasts, so the invite to Blake Hall Fishery, near Cheadle, in Staffordshire, was duly accepted. I’d noted pictures circulating on local social media groups showing a confirmed fish of 4lb 14oz, witnessed and weighed during a match, which gave me a little more confidence than ‘mate of a mate’ pictures and weights often banded about to give rise to rumours; these captures were genuine, and I’d also been sent images of 3lb+ fish taken from the same lake… there had to be something in it! I wanted to get there before the following media circus, and packed the light lure gear to have a walk around Capricious Lake on this smashing complex. It’s a small lake, with plenty of cover, oodles of weed, and great access, so I was looking forward to a wander around the water. As I arrived, it rained. A lot. It didn’t stop either. I travel light when exploring a new venue, so hadn’t packed waterproofs (Carole Kirkwood said it wouldn’t rain, and I believe anything she says!) so lofted my chest rig on, picked up the rod, and sloshed off towards the lake as the rain continued to teem down… I got to the water’s edge, and dropped in a tiny dropshot lure, intending to explore every nook and cranny on lap one, before changing to a smaller lure to jig my way around lap two. After ten minutes, I’d had a couple of small perch of around 3oz apiece, but had noted a scattering of fish as something else charged through them; encouraging signs. Soon, I was half way around my first circuit, and had caught several tiddlers,

so stopped to chat to an angler safely ensconced beneath his brolly, who asked what I was after. He then told me he knew of at least two perch of 5lb 8oz which had been landed, one from the pool on the banks of which we sat, the other from Peninsula Lake, further down the complex! I walked on, buoyed by such news! Eventually, I reached the end of the lap, and dropped into the final swim. My lure was lowered in less than a foot from the bank, and I felt the dropshot weight settle… WHAM! My rod tip hooped over, and a decent fish headed for the cover of the island. I’d spooled with 6lb braid and 5lb fluorocarbon, so had to let out line as whatever it was moved into open water; could it be one of the big perch? What else would take the lure?! A couple of minutes of tentative fight followed, then I saw a flash of gold through the murky waters! Perch are gold! Again, it moved away from the bank, but less than a minute later, I saw it again…. I don’t think I’ve ever been so disappointed to see a carp in my life… And so it proved; a small, boisterous carp of around 3-4lb, in excellent condition, but not what I was seeking. A second circuit with a small lure jigged produced nothing except more small perch, and by now, I was soaked through, so decided to finish, to return another day. In fairness, I had seen enough evidence to whet my appetite for more, whatever had scattered prey fish was of good size, the photographs of big perch I’d seen were witnessed by at least a couple of people, and I’m fairly sure I spooked a hefty perch with my clumsy approach to the water’s edge… I’ll be back, with a tub full of chopped worm methinks to try again! Later in the week, I did return, but to Peninsula Lake on the same venue in search of carp. It’s a match/pleasure water, but there are carp to well over 20lb, and I just fancied a day of simple fishing, using a small method feeder packed with groundbait, and an 8mm pellet shaped bait banded onto the hook. Peninsula is a super water for the less able angler, with the facility to park directly behind almost every peg, and it’s a great venue to introduce youngsters or novices into angling, with plenty of bites to be expected. I dropped into a peg next to an extremely affable gentleman, and we enjoyed a day of pleasant chat and lots of fish as we exchanged ideas. We

both had more than a dozen carp into double ﬁgures, and I added a couple of bream for good measure, but it became apparent that almost everyone stopped by to say hello, and what a friendly ﬁshery it was! There was none of the ‘secret squirrel’ brigade in attendance, just a lot of anglers out to enjoy a day on a pristine venue. You can’t really ask for more than that, can you? But there is more. The angler’s lodge offers perhaps the best breakfast, drinks and hot food for some distance, with Cheadle townsfolk popping in to take advantage of the food and the views, even if they are not anglers! There are other pools too, all with superb access for the disabled angler, and with plenty of water to give room for all, and each is packed with a variety of species. Sensible rules apply too, and if you

BROOKS DELIGHTED WITH ENGLAND CALL HONOURS FOR CHRIS AT LEAGUE DINNER Young prospect David Brooks is understandably delighted to receive his ﬁrst England call up. This week the midﬁelder was named in the England U20s squad for the prestigious Toulon Tournament, which will be staged in France later this month. The 19-year-old commented: “International recognition tops off a fantastic season. I’m looking forward to meeting up with the rest of the squad, training with them and then heading out to France where I hope to get game-time to prove what I can do.

I’ve only played a couple of games in United’s first team this season but I’ve been fully included with the squad and have played regularly for the under 23s. This is now an opportunity to keep the momentum going and it will be a new experience for me.” There was an element of confusion as Manchester-born Brooks was also named in the Welsh squad for the same tournament. His mother is Welsh. He explains: “It was not a case of picking one country over another. I’d already met with England officials and they informed me that I would be getting a call-up before I even knew of being selected for Wales. It is flattering to be recognised by both countries but I’d already committed to England.” Brooks and England will face Angola, Cub and Japan hoping to make the knockout stages of the competition.
