FANTASTIC DAY OUT PLANNED FOR GREAT GET TOGETHER ROTHERHAM Rotherham will join 110,000+ other events on Saturday for the Great Get Together in honour of Jo Cox. Hundreds of people from across Rotherham will be coming together this Saturday, 17 June, at the Clifton Park bandstand, joined by local musicians, artists, a carnival parade and much, much more - one of more than 110,000 Great Get Together events taking place in honour of
murdered MP Jo Cox and celebrating all that is best about Britain this weekend. “This will be a wonderful opportunity to bring our communities together in the wake of two divisive elections within the space of a year,” said Nick Stevens, community organiser for HOPE not hate, the national antiracism campaign which is putting on the event. “It’s our chance to demonstrate a
positive and united Britain.” There will be appearances from local artists such as: The Storm Trees, Rotherham Red Choir, local drumming group Rotherham African Drummers, an energetic performance from Young Minds Together, and more! Young people’s activities will be hosted by the wonderful Vicky Hilton, who will be running a mini-
carnival parade. There will also be workshops and carnival costume walkabouts, games for children and adults, a live ‘HOPE’ graffiti mural constructed throughout the day by local artist Philip Padfield, and food supplied courtesy of Doncaster Real Junk Food Project. Arts & crafts and henna painting will be run by the folks at Love Is Louder, in addition to many other activities. The
fantastic folks over at Moose Lorals will be documenting the whole event, so make sure you dress up, come down and have a load of fun! At 1pm there will be a minute’s silence in memory of Jo Cox, who was murdered by a far-right extremist last year. The commemoration will be led by the newly-elected Mayor, Eve Rose.

SUMMER SET TO BE A SIZZLER AT THE MOOR MARKET Cookery demonstrations, a vintage market and an Asian bazaar are among the activities taking place at the Moor Market this summer. The first Moor Market Bazaar was staged this week on Tuesday 13 June, with a range of Asian stalls selling clothes, jewellery, alcohol-free perfumes, loose fabric, halal sweets and more. Previously a success in Rotherham, and now coming to Sheffield for the first time, the bazaar

from local buskers. And a series of cookery demonstrations from nutritionist Hannah Bailey will begin on Saturday 24 June. Hannah, the market’s first in-house nutritionist, will give presentations on the fourth Saturday of every month, focusing on eating well, healthy living, and the preparation of nutritionally-balanced fresh meals. Councillor Mary Lea, cabinet member for culture, parks and leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “With rising footfall

and new traders, the Moor Market is really going from strength to strength at the moment, and it’s great to see this line-up of summer activities being added to our events schedule. “We hope that the Asian bazaar will be a success and will become a regular feature in the market, offering something that bit different to our usual stalls and giving customers more choice. “It’s great to have Hannah from Wise Choice Nutrition joining us, especially
as we think we may be the first market in the country to have our very own nutritionist. Her presentations will give shoppers the opportunity to learn something new, see new recipes cooked from scratch, and then buy the fresh ingredients right there and then.” The Moor Market is open six days a week, Monday to Saturday, from 8am until 5.30pm. New traders are always welcome, and can choose from various options for leasing a stall, including affordable pop-up shop opportunities. Renting stalls starts from as little as £25 per day.

cards will also prevent your wedding speech succumbing to the shakes if you’re nervous when performing it. “You’ll be more natural when you’re not reading straight off a page.” Says Lawrence, who has appeared on national radio giving his opinion on Gordon Brown’s speech at last year’s Labour conference and coached Stephen Fry. “Practice reading it and take your wedding speech slowly – if your speech takes 12 minutes, not nine, it doesn’t matter at all.” Other tips for natural delivery include emphasising key words – again, easier when reading from cue cards rather than a speech written out in full from an A4 sheet – and the use of gesticulations and changes of inflections to add relaxation and ‘normality’ into your delivery. Finally, don’t get drunk beforehand – Dutch courage can be counterproductive if it affects your delivery - or be put off by heckles; “You can pre-prepare a couple of witty responses to heckles in advance.” Lawrence advises.
Be the next Winston Churchill and keep the crowds enthralled with a witty, spellbinding wedding speech. We’ve all witnessed poorly delivered wedding speeches with cringe-worthy or poorly judged and crass humour, and for just that reason, the average groom’s wedding day is often slightly marred by the sense of fear and dread involved in standing up in front of family and friends, plus those of his new wife and embarrassing ones self. That’s why we asked Lawrence Bernstein for his advice on writing and delivering a great speech – one that’s funny, relaxed yet enjoyable for the groom as well as his audience. Read on to discover our top speech writing tips! “Every speech requires different delivery.” Says Lawrence. “And every speaker has a different style. A great speech means thinking about exactly what you want to say, how Editorial supplied by you want to say it and who you’re www.ukbride.co.uk speaking to.” Lawrence warns against using generic wedding gags or pre-written speeches, insisting that each speech should be exclusive, Lawrence advises. First, break down each element of your speech – introduction, compliment the bride, thank bridesmaids’ and present their gifts etc. Once that’s achieved, you can construct each element and write phrases - not than the whole speech, onto cue cards so you can maintain eye-contact with the audience without struggling to find your place when you look back to your prompts. SAFETY FIRST FOR DRIVERS AT NORTON LIGHTWOOD DRIVING TRAINING AREA As an impatient fifteen year old back in the early 1970's, I remember nagging my father to take me to the old Lightwood RAF base, as my friends told me I could learn to drive there! Sadly in 1996 the facility closed, and remained derelict until 2013, when Andy Warburton and Paul Gregory, of Safety First Driving Academy, took the plunge and leased the premises with the aim of restoring the moss and weed-covered roads and damaged surfaces. Four years later the site is unrecognisable! Despite issues with local vandals, there is a comprehensive road layout mirroring real-life motoring situations which can give young drivers invaluable experience of driving before they are old enough to venture on to the highways – encouraging safety & consideration for other road users. Andy and Paul currently plough all the profits from the site into ongoing improvements and opening up new sections
– they recently were able to bring into use two roads which were overgrown with brambles and moss. Future plans include driver training programmes in conjunction with local schools, building on partnerships they currently run using computer-based DriveIQ software, which instills a basic competency into young people. The site opens Thursday-Sunday, and charges a modest £15 per hour for drivers in their own car, or lessons are available for £35 in an instructor's car. So why not take advantage of the huge amount of work put in by Andy and Paul, and take your youngster down in the near future? All the feedback they have received says that it's great fun for parent & child alike! CLAIRE KING TALKS ABOUT CARING Claire King is best known for her iconic role as Kim Tate in Emmerdale and governor Karen Betts in Bad Girls. She is currently playing Erica Holroyd in Coronation Street. But away from the screen she has also played an important role, caring for her elderly parents. This Carers Week (12th-18th June) Claire talks about her experience caring for her elderly parents for 20 years and shares some tips that could help make carers lives a little bit easier, including getting a smart meter.
for alone while you go to the shops to top up. However, there are some things that can make life a bit easier, such as smart meters, which are a particular blessing for those who prepay for their gas and electricity and who might be managing a tight budget.
Can you tell us about your personal experience of being a carer? Twenty years ago my father was diagnosed with MS and my mother with rheumatoid arthritis and I started caring for them running errands, going shopping, cooking and sorting out finances. These days my father is bedridden and needs 24/7 professional care, so my brother and I tend to help out more with the financial side, whether it be helping with the bills or just looking at ways to help him save money.
What are your tips for carers? There are a lot of useful new innovations that weren’t available when I started caring for my parents. For example with a smart meter it’s easy to top up your credit via an app, online, or on the phone, meaning that you can top up quickly and easily for yourself, or top up for the people you care for, without having to go out to the shops. You can also see exactly how much credit you have left on a handheld screen, making it easier to keep track of what you are spending, very useful if you’re managing a tight budget.
What is the hardest part of being a carer? The hardest part is the long hours, because it’s not a 9-5 job. My father for example needs turning over in the middle of the night, and that sort of task means disrupted sleep for the carer. It’s also hard juggling all the finances that go with it, and trying to save money in as many ways as possible. What with expenditure on cars, wheelchairs, hoists, larger energy bills, the extra costs of caring can be enormous. I know from experience that taking on a caring role certainly increases worry about bills, particularly heating. This worry can be compounded if you are on a prepay meter, as many carers are. Not only do you have the additional worry of running out of credit and the electricity suddenly going off, but you may also have to leave the person you’re caring
Is caring a rewarding role? It is a rewarding thing, to see those people who you love dearly having a quality of life that they wouldn’t necessarily have if you weren’t there.

Sheffield City Council (SCC) has recently jointly hosted a conference to discuss promoting the Making Every Contact Count (MECC) approach in the Yorkshire and Humber region. A diverse group of people drawn from the public and community sector across the Yorkshire and Humber region gathered at the Showroom Cinema in Sheffield for this conference. Services involved included the NHS, Local Authorities, Emergency Services, Health Promoting organisations, Universities and the Third sector. MECC is about supporting people using ‘healthy conversations’ to help people make positive changes to their wellbeing by encouraging and offering consistent and concise information. Housing Manager, Claire Lane spoke at the conference, reiterating that Sheffield City Council are committed to adopting the principles of Making Every Contact Count in their role as landlord for over 48,000 council tenants. The management of council housing in the city has recently undergone a transformation, working with a new approach called ‘Housing+’. This approach means that Neighbourhood Officers are regularly out on the estates visiting residents in their homes and are identifying issues or support needs. SCC are confident that this new approach is starting to have a positive impact with improved outcomes for tenants.
One other thing I find hugely helpful are accessibility apps – accessibility is a particular problem for wheelchair users like my father, but apps such as It’s Accessible, list places that are accessible to people with mobility issues. These would have been particularly useful to me when caring for my father - my parents like to go to the horse racing and out for lunch occasionally, so we used to have to find numbers and ring around to ask about suitable access. Now it’s all at your fingertips. The huge amount of online money advice services available these days, such as energy advice websites and budgeting apps and blogs, would have been a huge help to me in terms of money management and taking advantage of the discounts that are available.

LAST CHANCE FOR STARDOM WITH THE BIG AUDITION!
With less than one week left to register for The Big Audition, the countdown is on. The Big Audition, sponsored by Diamond Live Lounge Doncaster, is a talent competition being held by Hallam FM’s Cash for Kids giving a band or solo artist the opportunity to win a money can’t buy prize. The prize package itself is worth over £5,000 and includes studio time; the chance to film a music video, a website and the winner will also be able to release their own single across digital platforms, which include iTunes and Spotify, plus much more! Once registration closes, the judging panel will shortlist
the bands and solo artists, choosing which twenty bands or solo artists will make it to the semi-final at Diamond Live Lounge in Doncaster where ten acts will be chosen to go onto The Big Audition Final at the O2 Academy in Sheffield on Friday 29th September. In order to get to the final each act will be required to fundraise for Cash for Kids, as the amount raised will be considered as part of their final score alongside the mark for their musical abilities on the night of the final. Every penny raised from their fundraising as well as ticket revenue will stay right here in South Yorkshire helping sick and disadvantaged children. COUNCIL PLEDGES SUPPORT FOR FESTIVAL OF DOCS & FILM It’s the UK’s biggest festival of documentaries, and is currently underway in Sheffield with guests including Louis Theroux, Sir Lenny Henry and Maxine Peake. And now, Sheffield City Council is pleased to announce that it has signed a new three-year funding agreement with Doc/Fest, an event which brings in more than £1.2m to Sheffield each year. Now in its 24th year, Doc/Fest is not only an internationally significant festival of documentaries, but is also Sheffield’s biggest conference, taking place across 30 venues and attracting around 3,500 delegates each year from around 60 countries. More than 30,000 members of the public also enjoy the eclectic range of films, talks and other events on offer at Doc/Fest, viewing upwards of 180 documentaries over six days. Councillor Julie Dore, leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “I am delighted to confirm that we as a council will support Doc/Fest for another three years.“Not only is it an event that has grown increasingly important to the business community here in Sheffield and internationally, but hosting the festival adds to our reputation as a cultural and creative destination, enhancing Sheffield’s appeal to visitors, businesses and those who may wish to move to Sheffield to work. “I look forward to seeing the festival continue to grow and thrive over the next three years, and hope that it becomes even more popular with Sheffielders, delegates, and our international visitors.” This year’s Doc/Fest once again features a huge line-up of documentaries and big-name talent, both home-grown and from around the world, including a record number of world, international, EU and UK premiere titles.
LIVE REVIEW LIVE WIRE REAL TIME LIVE - CHESTERFIELD
WORDS AND PICTURE: ROY GOODALL
HAVING never been one for the old ‘Tribute’ act as I’ve been blessed seeing the originals many times, it was with arm firmly up the back that I checked out Live Wire, one of the more better acts to cover AC/DC at Chesterfield’s premier hang out. After numerous thoughts on the opener I guess it was obvious they’d kick off with the Bon Scott era, so Live Wire was a natural choice with Shot Down In Flames and Dirty Deeds following suit. Looking carefully at the five some they did look a little bit like the real deal and they certainly sounded it too and having done the rounds for many years Live Wire have more than honed their craft. With Down Payment Blues keeping some of the purists happy they went straight into If You Want Blood, a personal favourite of mine, alone with several others I might add. Come on, this is AC/DC after all, albeit in tribute form.
As well as returning regulars such as Louis Theroux and Stacey Dooley, special guest speakers attending the festival for the first time include Lenny Henry, June Sarpong, Peter Greenaway, “Years and Years” frontman Olly Alexander, Walter Murch, Adam Curtis and Ian Hislop. For a complete programme of all the events involved in Doc/Fest, or to buy tickets, visit the website at https://sheffdocfest.com
It wasn’t then long until ‘Brian Johnson’ came on with Rock Or Bust, Shoot To Thrill and surprisingly Flick Of The Switch, a song I’d not heard for years. Again, a near perfect performance from singer number two though I did feel he touched his cap a little too often, or am I being just too picky. With Hells Bells and Hard As A Rock the band were all firing in unison with the closing stages being filled with both singers on stage, ‘Brian Johnson saying passionately that he was sadly leaving Live Wire but they would continue. I wish he’d said why. Anyway, overall a good show, an even better turn out, and plenty of punter praising on the way out for a band who not only delivered a great tribute to arguable one of planet earth’s most talented bands, but played none stop for 2 and a half hours. Many people heap praise to ‘Angus’ and rightly so, but Live Wire are a solid band and ‘Malcolm Young’ not only looked and moved the part but like his hero never missed a beat throughout the performance. So, there you have it. Tribute bands come in many shapes and sizes so if like me you’ve seen and prefer the originals, it really doesn’t do any harm to check out the copy cats. And if they’re all as good as this lot, its money well spent.

APPLE TO LAUNCH SAFE DRIVING MODE FOR IPHONES The fight against illegal mobile phone use at the wheel has taken an interesting turn this week, with Apple’s announcement of a specialised feature on its latest update. A new mode known as ‘Do Not Disturb While Driving’ is said by Apple to increase driver focus, and will appear on the iPhones of owners around the world this autumn, as they update their software to the latest iOS 11 version. When the new feature is activated, all notifications are silenced and the screen switches off, allowing smartphone users to dedicate their full attention to the road ahead. Once the iPhone detects a user is moving in a car, it sends anyone who tries to contact them an automatic text message explaining the person is currently on the road and unavailable. If the driver finds themselves in an emergency situation, they are still able to use their phone by replying with the word ‘urgent’ in order to push a message through. There is also an option for drivers to select favourite contacts still able to reach them when the feature is activated. In a rapidly-growing area for developers, Nissan recently revealed a prototype for an in-car signalblocking box, which removes the temptation for drivers to respond to incoming calls and texts. In 2015 alone, 22 driver deaths were directly attributed to mobile phone use – a loss of life which could have been easily avoided. The RAC encourages all drivers to sign up and take an online pledge to Be Phone Smart. Among those to have already lent their support to similar initiatives are Pharrell Williams, Rafael Nadal and footballer Antoine Griezmann. The iOS 11 update will also bring an extension to the
power of mobile payment system Apple Pay, which will now allow users to send money directly to friends and families. Users will be able to send and receive money through the messages app, or by using Siri and telling the assistant who to pay. Pete Williams, spokesman for the RAC’s #BePhoneSmart campaign, said: “These days it is less phone calls and more the pings and buzzes of texts and social media apps that have the potential to distract a driver from the task at hand. “So we’re pleased that at last millions of drivers that use an Apple iPhone are about to be able to put an end to intrusive notifications while they’re behind the wheel. “Apple took out a series of patents more than three years ago designed to address the issue of driver safety, so while this new feature has been rather a long time coming it’s a positive step that the majority of drivers with an iOS device will be able to benefit from it by the autumn. “As well as downloading the free update when it’s available, we encourage motorists to make a personal pledge to not use their handheld phone while driving – it takes just moments at BePhoneSmart.uk and every driver that does so sends a powerful message to others that illegal phone use and driving a moving vehicle do not mix.”

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
This week, I’m somewhat fed up… What has happened to ‘on the bank etiquette’? When I was a youngster, you watched another angler respectfully at a distance, until invited forward, or crept stealthily into a position where conversation was possible only when you had made eye contact, and it certainly didn’t begin “…alright mate, caught owt?” as you blundered into his swim… There were cardinal sins too; breaking the skyline was punishable by death (well, a damn good rollicking), casting over another angler’s line…well, that was death, and shouting, or running, resulted in a swim, propelled by irate matchmen. It seems to me that all sense of good manners has gone out of the window after the last couple of weeks I’ve had… Don’t get me wrong, I’ve absolutely no problems with a polite approach, a prelude of small talk leading to the question of whether I’ve indeed been fortunate enough to tempt a piscine opponent, indeed, I even enjoy meeting like-minded anglers, but some people need to have a long hard thought about how they act on the bank. I go fishing for the relaxation, (yes, it’s also work, but it’s not hard work is it?) solitude, nature, and just occasionally, a few fish. I do not hit the banks to get drunk, stoned, or generally disturb every other angler within a five hundred yard radius. If you do go fishing for those reasons, that’s fine, that’s how you enjoy your angling then so be it, I fully respect that, but I’ll not intrude on your party, if you don’t intrude on mine. So, what has incurred my ire this time? I love fishing close in, under the rod tips, and as a result, consider myself fairly stealthy, sitting well back from the water, often in the cover of a bush, or behind screening reeds, so you can imagine my dismay, when last week, with fish so close in I could see their backs out of the water, that an individual marched up to my peg, loudly demanded I answer his query, then proceeded to stand right on top of the fish, feeding ardently within inches of the bank. “Bloody hell, there’s fish here!” he bawled. I replied

that I was aware of that, I was actually trying to catch one; “Well, you might have to wait, they’ve just swum off!” I noted several bow waves as the fish scarpered… we had words, and I explained that I wouldn’t even contemplate doing what he had done were I to approach another angler, as not only did I consider it impolite, it wasn’t good angling practice either. “I’m really struggling further down mate, I was only trying to see what you were doing….” AAAAHHHH! Later in the week, a different venue, a different day, a different idiot. Sitting quietly beneath my shelter, I heard (or rather felt) someone thudding along the bank behind me. Two anglers, both ‘adults’ came running past, in the quest to find a suitable peg, and get there before anyone else, despite the fact that no other anglers were present. Sliding to a halt, one asked the usual question, and I replied that I had surprisingly caught a carp, and lost another, and that I thought that fish were coming on to the feed; a big mistake. “Over here mate! He’s catching, we’ll drop in next door!” I was aghast… They ran back to their Mercedes, slammed open the boot, and hurriedly dumped the contents of the car in the next peg. A crate of Stella, some suspicious packages of herbs were noted, and after a minute or two, once the tackle had been widely spread and the bivvy had been unfurled, one returned to my basecamp to ask if he could borrow a MALLET! AAAAHHH! (For the record, I don’t own a mallet, and consider that any angler that does, should stand before a mirror, part his hair, and check whether ‘666’ is tattooed there). This pair of anglers made enough noise between them to scare every fish in the area, (you wouldn’t have wanted them in your camp in the ‘Walking Dead’, that’s for certain, you’d have no chance!) and as I’d caught, and completed my tasks, I thought that the best option was to pack up and return to the van. As I did, I noted their first cast, straight over the lines of the much bigger angler on the far bank, and noticed him snatch up his rod as the alarm sounded, and lift into what he thought was a carp. He wound in, with a brief look of confusion, before he realised that he was pulling against the now screaming chump on my bank who was convinced he had a fish on… The other angler shouted a warning, and reeled in before cutting their line; he laid down his rod, wound his other one in, and marched away from his peg, in our general direction, clearly intent on doing harm…he was what normal sized people call ‘a big unit’, and looked clearly able to wrestle dinosaurs, crush rocks, and generally hurt people with his just ears…. badly. I shut the doors, started the engine,

and slowly drove away; in my mirror, I could clearly see one angler being lifted by his collar, (it may even have been his nipples) and the other one locking himself in the Mercedes as The Hulk raged about their incompetence; I regret to say I felt nothing but smug…
So, just to finish this week’s rant, I’m seriously considering the purchase of a paintball gun. It’s a superb way to deliver boilies at range, but be warned; if you dare to ask me for a mallet, or break my skyline I WILL gun you down…

HIRST NAMED ‘SURREAL IN TEAM OF THE EXPERIENCE’ TOURNAMENT SAYS BROOKS Owls striker George Hirst leads the line in the Team of the Toulon Tournament. George finished as the joint leading scorer in the Toulon Tournament with four goals as England lifted the the title in France. Following the conclusion of the prestigious competition, which saw England retain their crown, the official Team of the Tournament has been named. With four goals for the Three Lions, Hirst has been selected as one of the stand outs by the competition’s official Twitter account on Monday. Hirst struck a hat-trick in England’s emphatic 7-1 win over Cuba and converted from the spot against Japan in the group stage. The Wednesday youngster finished as the competition’s joint leading scorer along with England team mate Harvey Barnes and Angola’s Chico Banza. Congratulations George and England!
In his first taste of international football, the Blades midfielder was influential as the young Three Lions lifted the trophy at the prestigious French tournament. Brooks, 19, was named Player of the Tournament and scored in Saturday’s final against Ivory Coast. He said: “It was an unbelievable experience and tops off what has been a tremendous campaign. “I went looking to take as much of it in as possible, but ended the tournament with a couple of goals, three or four assists and lifting the trophy. As a team we played very well, I think we deserved to win it, despite having to endure a penalty shoot-out against Ivory Coast in the final. “At the presentation at the end my number was called out and I went up to pick up a personal award. It was all in French and I didn’t realise what I’d won until one of my team-mates pointed out that I was Player of the Tournament. All in all it was a surreal experience but one I’ll remember for a long-time.” Brooks progressed through United’s SteelPhalt Academy and it has been an impressive couple of days for the Shirecliffe facility. 17-year-old David Parkhouse scored on his Northern Ireland U21s debut and former Blade Dominic Calvert-Lewin netted the winner for England in the U20s World Cup.

DREAM SCENE: SPRINGETT JOINS THE SQUAD The Owls are delighted to announce England goalkeeper Ron Springett as the next player to feature in the ‘Sheffield Wednesday Dream Scene’. The iconic shot-stopper was a vital member of the Wednesday side of the 1960s, which finished runners up in Division One in 1961 and reached the FA Cup final in 1966. Springett also featured for Wednesday in Europe, being part of the side that beat Roma, Lyon and Barcelona in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in the 196162 campaign. He became the Owls’ number one after signing from QPR in 1958 and is still the club’s most capped player for England with 33 appearances for the Three Lions. He was selected in the World Cup-winning England squad in 1966, for which he received a winners’ medal in 2009 at 10 Downing Street. He passed away in September 2015, but after earning legendary status with the Owls, he stays firmly in the memories of those who were fortunate enough to see him play. Overall the agile goalie played 384 times for Wednesday between 1958 and 1967 and now will feature in Wednesday’s 150th anniversary ‘Dream Scene’ mural alongside Roland Nilsson who was announced last week. The next player to feature in Australian artist Jamie Cooper’s iconic dressing room will be announced next Monday!
LEGENDS KICK OFF THE SUMMER
BROOKS STARS FOR YOUNG LIONS WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH Sheffield United youngster David Brooks was named player of the tournament following England’s win in the Toulon Tournament. The Under-21 competition was retained by England following a victory against Ivory Coast in the final. The match finished 1-1, with Brooks scoring England’s only goal, before an unlikely win for the English on penalties. Despite the positive summer, it is still likely that the 19-year-old will join Chesterfield on loan. The deal was layed out in the negotiations to bring Ched Evans to the club at the beginning of the summer. Youth did not play a big part in United’s charge to the title last season, and it seems that the same attitude will be followed in the coming campaign. Brooks only featured four times last season, so a year of regular football cannot harm the youngster’s development. Louis Reed is likely to follow Brooks out of Bramall Lane on a temporary basis, the centre midfielder was almost an ever-present under Nigel Clough and Nigel Adkins, but could not break into Chris Wilder’s first team plans. A pattern begins to emerge when you consider how sudden the brakes were applied to George Long’s United career. The stopper was celebrating 100 appearances during Adkins’ tenure, now his future at the Lane looks in doubt following a season of assured performances from Simon Moore. The club makes no secret of the fact that they are willing to listen to offers for its younger players. Dominic Calvert-Lewin has gone on to achieve a remarkable amount since his move to Everton, including a World Cup final winner. With Brooks receiving such wide approval, and with no place for Reed in the first team, it won’t be long before Premier League academies come calling.

WALKER HANDED DEAL Doncaster Rovers youngster Tyler Walker has signed a professional contract with the club. The full-back who joined the club in 2008, has progressed through the academy ranks and has now been rewarded with a six month deal by firstteam manager Darren Ferguson. “I am over the moon, ever since I was a little boy, all I ever wanted was to sign a professional contract and now my dream has come true, it is a great feeling,” he said. “Players like Harry Middleton and Liam Mandeville have already been given a chance ,so I am going to go away and work hard during pre-season . “Harry and Liam have given me advice, which is to get your head down in training and work hard, give yourself that chance to impress the manager and you never know what might happen.” Darren Ferguson has handed youngsters such as Reece Fielding and Will Longbottom professional deals and rewarded them with first-team opportunities during his time at the club. And Walker is determined to feature in that list under Ferguson and has highlighted competitions such as the Checkatrade Trophy to make his mark. “A lot of the younger players in the squad played in the Checkatrade Trophy last season and that is one of my targets, to get some game time in that competition and then ultimately get some League One games,” he said. “I would like to break into the U21s side too, I want to play as many games as possible during this six months with the side. “It is an unreal feeling to be around the first-team set up, with the players who are all preparing themselves for the upcoming game and I want to break into the first team squad.”
Saturday 24 June sees the fifth instalment of the EvesTrust legends football match, which pits a team of ex- professionals against a team of local fundraisers. The previous four games have seen great names such as Paul Merson, Des Walker & Darren Anderton, as well as Rovers legends Brian Stock, Colin Douglas & Colin Cramb. Even record appearance holder James Coppinger got involved last year to show his support. This year is set to continue where they left off as the “Magic Man” Paul Merson has already signed back up to return and is set to be joined by other former internationals. Additionally the charity is currently running an ambitious campaign to attract another former England international and genuine legend of the game Frank Lampard. To help with their campaign EvesTrust have enlisted the eager assistance of a number of local Doncaster schools and former Rovers club sponsors OneCall Insurance. All are keen to support the work and efforts of the trust as all the money they raise stays within the Doncaster area and benefits our own serious and terminally ill Cancer patients. #Lamps4Legends is now live via both Facebook and Twiter accounts @evestrust with an online competition giving you the chance to win up to £200 in vouchers by simply sharing or retweeting the campaign posts. Please support the campaign online and support the fundraisers on the day, as tickets are just £5 Adult, £3 Child & £10 Family (2 Adults + 2 Child) and Family Fun activities running pitch side throughout the day. All in all it’s a perfect and affordable day out for all the family, as we kick off the summer of football.

WARNE WORKING ON EXTRA FIREPOWER Rotherham United boss Paul Warne has targeted extra firepower as he plots more deals in the close season transfer market. Warne has already stated he is close on three fronts, with news expected shortly as he looks to add to his close season capture of defender Michael Ihiekwe. Should he complete deals for the three players he is in talks with, Warne says he will then look to add another two signings to complete his summer recruitment, stating that strikers are right at the top of his current manifesto. “I am still looking for some more firepower at the top of the pitch,” Warne told www.themillers.co.uk “I have worked out that I will need around 70 goals to get into the top six, so I am trying to work out what I’ve got in my team at the moment. Ideally everyone is looking for that 25 goals a season striker, which we have attempted to get, but obviously that isn’t easy.” Warne, who stated on Thursday that he is currently in talks with a striker and two midfielders, has made no secret of his desire to strengthen at the top end of the pitch. Last season he was heavily reliant on top scorer Danny Ward, after Jonson Clarke-Harris missed almost the entire season with an ACL injury. Warne wants to avoid a repeat of last season’s dearth, but is acutely aware that goalscorers are coveted individuals. “Even if you had an unlimited pot of gold and I said to you now get me a number nine who can get me 25 goals, the list would still only be around three or four,” Warne continued. “It is not easy. We are making no end of phone calls, and talking to players, and we are really trying to get them to buy into what I believe. “I am being honest with them. I believe that this club is a great club, I believe that with everything going on behind the scenes it is a lot stronger than it was this time last year. I am looking forward to a clean slate and really having a go and being judged for what I’ve done this year.”
