REPORT SHOWS DONCASTER’S ECONOMY IS PERFORMING WELL Jobs and growth measures have exceeded their targets in the council’s latest quarterly performance report.

The quarter four report for 2016/17 has shown investment into and within Doncaster was £90.5million, 894 full-time jobs have been created with the support of Business Doncaster,

1,175 new apprenticeships have been created since 2013 and 1,057 new homes have been built this year across the public and private sectors. In addition, 70% of the council’s spend was with Doncaster companies ensuring the local economy benefited from council contracts.

As well as these economic statistics

considerably surpassing their targets, the report showed 93% of all service measures (41 out of 44) were good up from 86% in the last quarter.

Commenting on the report which went to Cabinet last week, Mayor Ros Jones said: “It is encouraging to see council performance improving and while there is always room for

more improvement we are on the right track.

“A strong and resilient economy is crucial for driving our borough forward so it is pleasing we are continuing to make good progress on this front.

“With the Yorkshire Wildlife Park announcing expansion plans, the European Tour golf complex

planned at Rossington Hall, the National College for High Speed Rail set to open soon, the town centre masterplan helping to transform our urban centre and a raft of other infrastructure schemes lined up which will deliver more jobs and growth, these are exciting times for Doncaster.”

TRAMLINES FESTIVAL AND RE-GATHER PRESENT THE FOLK FOREST The Folk Forest is a stunningly beautiful oasis of music, food and activities nestled in Endcliffe Park, just outside Sheffield City centre and cohosted by Regather Co-Op. Expanded in 2017, the full site now stretches for over a mile, following the historical River Porter into Bingham Park and Whitley Woods. It’s jammed packed with music, food, markets and activities with loads to do for families.

The Folk Forest Stage in Endcliffe Glade will play host to a dazzling array of music, from quirky local acts to internationally renowned Syrian performers and everything in between.

Featuring headline performances from Cate Le Bon, Omar Souleyman, Blaevanon and Yorkston Thorne Khan alongside Sheffield favourites, Neil McSweeney, The Buffalo Skinners, Paul Littlewood plus many more. The Bird Table is a second stage located in the Folk Forest Fair featuring a diverse programme representing Sheffield’s cultural landscape. The music and performances continue up the through the Porter Valley to the 500 year old site of ‘Shepherd’s Wheel’ with storytelling, music, poetry and Heritage songs inspired by the people and trees of Sheffield. The Folk Forest features games, demonstrations, workshops and countless more ways to get involved. The heritage crafts area offers opportunities to ‘have a go’ with materials like wood, metal and leather led by talented crafts people.

offering a rang of activities including immersive reality experiences and art installations and Sheffield’s Site Gallery are launching their Art Van at this year’s event. The van transforms into a whole area for creative activities. Yoga at The Reach will provide yoga classes for all ages in the healing field.

The Folk Forest has plenty for young people of all ages including; - a Forest School in the woods run by Middlewood Nature Nursery - a childrens area hosted by Youth Discovery Ventures - games and interactive stalls throughout the site - Free entry for ages 12 and under (Entry to the main music stage at The Folk Forest requires a Tramlines Festival Wristband. Ages 6 to 12 require a free child ticket, which is booked with the purchase of a full adult ticket. Entry to the Folk Forest Fair and other areas is free for everyone.

Folk Forest hosts, Regather Co-Op, will be showcasing their latest small batch of craft beer, fresh from their on-site brewery alongside Sheffield Brewery Co-Op’s beer tent and a range of carefully selected independent food traders.

Thie week, Arena Racing Company (“ARC”) announces that William Hill is the new sponsor of the St Leger Stakes, the world’s oldest Classic horserace.

The three-year deal sees William Hill sponsor the Group 1 St Leger Stakes, worth £700,000 this year, along with a feature race each day of the four-day festival which will be known as ‘The William Hill St Leger Festival’ and run from Wednesday 13 September to Saturday 16 September 2017.

Cast, Doncaster’s flagship theatre will continue to receive investment of £320,000 per year from 2018 to 2022 by Arts Council England following a funding decision for National Portfolio Organisations announced on 27 June 2017.

The charity, which welcomed over 90,000 people last year, has since opening in 2013, enlivened the cultural landscape of England’s largest borough with free outdoor spectacular events, Northern focused commissions, world premieres, new-writing, strategic partnerships and a thriving participation programme.

The charity, which continues to be part of Arts Council England’s National Portfolio, has received much praise nationally and locally for its approach to accessibility. Cast is the UK’s only theatre to present a fully BSL integrated pantomime, and the only theatre in Yorkshire with a fully accessible Changing Places toilet, making its performances and workshops accessible for disabled people in a borough where levels of disability and work limiting illness are 23% higher than the UK average. Cast has been successful in a range of fundraising initiatives to date, including raising £10,000 to fund free tickets and bursaries as part of its dedication to removing barriers to accessing great culture in Doncaster.

Special Olympics Great Britain has announced Meadowhall as an Official Supporter for its showpiece 2017 National Games in Sheffield in August.

Held every four years, the flagship Special Olympics GB National Summer Games is the country’s largest sports event for athletes with intellectual (learning) disabilities.

This National Summer Games is the tenth in the history of Special Olympics GB and will see around 2,600 athletes compete in 20 sports - including Judo, Athletics, Golf Sailing, Football and Tennis – across over a dozen Sheffield and South Yorkshire venues.

Karen Wallin, CEO of Special Olympics GB, commented: “To have Meadowhall as a supporter of the Games is a huge boost. They will make an important contribution to the promotion and success of these Games which will benefit our Special Olympics GB athletes.”

Darren Pearce, Meadowhall Centre Director added: “Like Karen, we are delighted to be involved and supporting the Special Olympics GB in Sheffield. It’s a real coup for the city to attract such a high-profile event and Meadowhall will be helping to fly the flag for all the competitors over the coming weeks.

“There are many varied sports taking place over the four days and the Meadowhall team are all looking forward to seeing some spectacular competitions unfold across Sheffield and the region come August.”

SHEFFIELD’S OWN LIFE SAVER RETIRES TO THE EMERGENCY SERVICES MUSEUM FOR ALL TO SEE Landlocked Sheffield isn’t traditionally a place for lifeboat unveilings but it’s fair to say there’s nowhere more deserving of the city’s newest – and possibly biggest - tourist attractions.

Weighing in at 26 tons, the City of Sheffield lifeboat saved 650 lives in a fifteen year career that started way back in 1989. Kind-hearted local residents raised a staggering £435,000 towards the vessel’s £560,000 costs in the late 1980s.

At 47 foot long, the state-of-the-art vessel was designed to sail straight through towering waves and could reach a maximum speed of 17.6 knots.

The City of Sheffield lifeboat is set to be the newest exhibit at the city’s National Emergency Services Museum who’ve teamed up with the RNLI to ensure the city that helped launch it gets to share its history.

Still in complete working order – visitors will soon be able to board the awe-inspiring vessel and get an appreciation of its incredible career.

Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Kent named the Lifeboat City of Sheffield on 28 July 1989 at Whitby Lifeboat Station. She has also served at Ramsgate, Hartlepool and Sennen Cove before finding her permanent home at Poole in 2001.

The Tyne Class Lifeboat remained at Poole Lifeboat Station until 2016, when she was withdrawn from service and replaced by a new D class lifeboat.

The City of Sheffield lifeboat will be officially unveiled by dignatories – including the Lord Mayor of Sheffield - at the museum next month.

From 23 July, and throughout the school summer holidays, guided onboard tour sessions will run.

The lifeboat was originally fundraised for by the people of Sheffield, with the cost being met by the 1987-88 Sheffield Lifeboat Appeal and a significant bequest from Mrs Mary Mable Walker. The loan of the vessel provides the chance for the boat to go back to the city which made it possible while ensuring the RNLI can continue to support the museum in

maintaining and displaying the vessel effectively.

Matt Wakefield, CEO of the museum said: “The Emergency Services Museum has a proud history of caring for historic emergency vehicles and we are delighted to be receiving a modern RNLI lifeboat to display – especially one with such a connection to the city. We’re looking forward to inviting the public to the exhibition and running sessions on the lifeboat’s remarkable stories and the inspiring people who served on her.’

Jonathan Clark, RNLI volunteer Coxswain of Poole lifeboat says: “The City of Sheffield was a faithful servant during her 15 years on service here at Poole lifeboat station; we are one of the busiest coastal stations so she was kept active. I was very proud to be the Coxswain at her wheel. Since September 2001 when she arrived on service, she launched 557 times, the number of people rescued (including lives saved) was 650. The Tyne was very much part of the Poole quay scenery and photographed a lot by the holiday makers.

‘In 2004, I had the proud honour of taking the wheel and escorting the RNLI’s patron, Her Majesty The Queen after she had opened the Lifeboat College and in December 2013 we celebrated the City of Sheffield’s 25th birthday with a special greeting sent by the Worshipful Mayor of Sheffield. We have a good few memories, memorable ‘shouts’ and the camaraderie part that the boat played within the crews and community life that revolves around a lifeboat station. It was a very sad day when she left us and she will always be a part of our heritage. However, I am very pleased that she will be returning home to South Yorkshire and look forward to visiting her there’.”

This is part of the process to create the third Age Better in Sheffield Neighbourhood Toolkit. The toolkit will go to 7,000 homes across the ward, and will be bespoke to the area. It will contain information that will inspire and empower residents to reduce loneliness and isolation in those aged 50+.

Your thoughts and experiences will inform what the toolkit looks like, and the information and stories it contains.

Our Burngreave ward Neighbourhood Toolkit was a multilingual newspaper, and our toolkit for Beauchief and Greenhill ward was a box filled with lots of special items (including a guide to local activities… and a tea towel)! So, we’re really excited to see what the Firth Park ward toolkit will look like.

It’s almost 2 years since mother and son, Sue and Nick Housley had the opportunity to perform together, but this time they have pulled out all the stops with this specially created show all about the life of iconic film star and vocalist Doris Day, who ironically made the news this April with the discovery she is in fact 2 years older than she thought at 95 instead of 93 years of age.

A SUMMARY OF THE QUEEN’S SPEECH FOR DRIVERS Plans to clamp down on fraudulent whiplash claims and introduce compulsory electric vehicle charging points have been unveiled in the Queen’s Speech.

Through the prepared reading, the Government also committed to supporting the invention, design and use of driverless cars – as the agenda for its upcoming term was laid out in the Houses of Lords.

The RAC labelled plans for the mandatory charging network as “unambitious”, while broadly welcoming proposals around insurance claims, aimed at tackling what MPs call a “rampant compensation culture”.

The motoring organisation also expressed disappointed over the lack of plans to address the unfair practices of private parking operators.

The proposed whiplash claim-tackling measure would put a ban on settling claims which have no medical evidence to back them up.

It would also see the introduction of a new fixed tariff of payouts for whiplash injuries, eligible for two years.

Last year the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) said that putting a cap on whiplash claims could cut car insurance costs by £40 a year for each driver. In Wednesday’s Queen’s Speech, a £35 annual saving was mentioned.

Reacting to the announcements, RAC insurance director Mark Godfrey said the new measures outlined are timely, with car insurance prices at an all-time high due to the recent hike in Insurance Premium Tax (IPT) and changes to the Ogden discount rate.

“We need tough action on this to protect the vast majority of honest drivers, and now look forward to seeing all insurers pass on the savings directly to drivers as soon as this this comes into law,” he said.

“Strengthening of the regulation of claims management companies is also to be welcomed but we need to see the detail to assess if will be effective to curb the aggressive contact strategies we see today.”

In the other major announcement for the motor industry, the speech unveiled plans to make it a requirement for motorway services and major petrol station chains to install charge points for electric vehicles.

leader in new industries”, the Government plans are part of a Bill on automated and electric vehicles, and will also support the invention, design and use of driverless cars.

Also pitched was the extension of compulsory vehicle insurance to cover the use of automated vehicles, ensuring compensation claims continue to be paid quickly, fairly and easily.

The UK is the largest market for electric vehicles in the EU, while one in five electric cars sold in the EU last year was made in the UK. The Government is committed to spending £600 million during this Parliament to support the ultra-low emissions’ market, while a further £270 million was announced in last year’s autumn statement.

RAC chief engineer David Bizley said: “While more electric vehicle charging points are welcome, the proposals are rather unambitious and do not include plans for more charging points in places where, arguably, motorists would benefit most from them – the car parks of major shopping centres and supermarkets.”

“Charging technology that is introduced also needs to be of the type that actively encourages a generation of drivers to get behind the wheel of an electric car – so this means installing the most rapid charging technology that plug-in vehicles can accept.

“After all, no one would accept a dial-up internet connection in this age of fibre optic broadband, and drivers should not have to wait for many hours in order to be on their way again. It is also important that a minimum charger standard is established and there are moves to simplify the plethora of different and sometimes confusing charging options for consumers.”

ANGLER’S CORNER

What a week I’ve had on the banks! I set out early in the week to scout some new venues for Angler’s Mail magazine, as part of my remit for their ‘Where to Fish’ section. I find them, send in the details, and someone else (Steve) does all the hard work, but locating them is the first hurdle. With that in mind, I travelled to five rivers, one stretch of canal, and a stillwater to sound them out, and, as usual, I took a light lure rod… just in case!

After taking in the delights of tiny rivers such as the Sow, and Blythe, (where I witnessed some impressive chub, in little more than a brook!) I ventured further until I came to a stretch of the Trent I hadn’t previously visited. As it’s a club water, and I have the book, I thought I’d spend an hour wandering the banks, flicking a lure into likely spots in what was, after a recent spell of hot weather, a very low, clear, river. I found a shaded area beneath a road bridge, and a gentle underarm lob saw my lure spin out into the depths, hoping for a perch or two.

I like to use small lures, firmly believing that any fish can hit a small enticer, but a larger imitation firmly rules out many fish, so I tend to start small; in this case, a small ‘Firetiger’ pattern shad was skipped across the bottom, and I started to pick off small perch each cast, the hooked fish often followed in by half a dozen chums as they wondered what was going on. A few minutes into the session, and as I wound in yet another tiddler, which was in company of several more inquisitive perch, a shadow darted out from beneath my feet, smashed into the perch, and was gone in a flurry of spray! The fish hit the hooked perch so fast, and so hard, that I didn’t have time to react before it snatched the perch and was gone… and the assailant wasn’t a pike… it was chub! A chub bigger than any I’d ever seen before, and I saw it clearly as it ripped into the unfortunate perch, and rolled over in the sunlight; definitely a Chevin to try and catch!

I returned a couple of days later. I love fishing for chub, believing them a tough opponent, even more so in clear water, and spooking them is easy, ruining the swim before you even start, so I was careful to keep out of sight. I set up well back from the water’s edge, running my line through the eyes of a Sonik Sports S3 rod, a 1.75lb test curve easily capable of stopping a bullish fighter, yet with a tip sensitive enough to register tentative bites from wary fish. I then sat, tackled up, ready to go, for thirty minutes, flicking in tiny balls of bread, and a few maggots, every minute or so. I didn’t even know if chub were beneath the bridge, I didn’t want

to risk a shadow falling on the water, so instead just hoped that the fish would still be there.

I like to move my bait through the swim in conditions like this; already it was hot, the sun was bright, and I suspected I may only get one chance to connect with a fish, so a simple 2 SSG link leger was attached, a large lump of bread flake on the hook, the rod tip poked between the nettles and the rig flicked out into midstream… Whilst watching the tip, I like to hold the line too, to try and feel any bites; it’s a very sensitive, direct way to fish. As the bait trundled downstream, a momentary stop, before the line was wrenched from between my fingers, and the rod tip hooped around! Fish!

I struck… and missed the unmissable! Ahhh!

I sat for another half an hour, still flirting maggots over the nettles, tearing small pieces of thick white loaf off, and flicking those in too, before deciding to try again.

Once more, the rig was plopped in about halfway across, and left to swing through the swim. I kept low, adjusting my position to ensure I didn’t break the skyline, when I felt a solid thump, and lifted into a chub; was it ‘The One’? It didn’t feel like it, still a good fish of over 3lb, but not the monster I hoped for. Safely netted, it was returned just upstream, and my half hour interlude commenced again… a few maggots, a few pieces of bread, and repeat…

A third cast rolled through unmolested, so the bread was replaced, and dropped in at my feet to go through again.

WHAM! Another solid hit, and a bigger fish started to tear off downstream. The Sonik S3 was having none of it though, and I managed to hold the fish in the middle of the swim, before gently playing it to the waiting net.

It was a bigger fish, perhaps approaching 5lb, but still not the monster I’d seen a few days before. A few more maggots, a slice or two of bread….

It was time to go again, so a piece of flake was pinched on, and it was lowered into the water to trundle downstream. Nothing this time, so I slowly retrieved it to try and cause as little disturbance as possible; fat chance!

An almighty commotion, and I saw a large pike slash at the twirling bread, before charging through the swim angrily before it smashed my line and was gone! There was no chance of another fish after that disturbance, so I broke down the tackle to move upstream to a delightful weir pool which surely contained more fish? Sometimes, you see the darker side of nature when fishing, and as I packed up, beneath the bridge, I noted an array of pigeons roosting; they had been noticed by something else too, and I was startled by a sudden uproar of flapping and feathers as they all scarpered…. All but one; a bird of prey, I think a Sparrowhawk, had hurtled under the bridge, snatched a single bird from their loft, and sat devouring it on the far bank… something I’d not seen up close before, and in a macabre way, a real treat to watch; nature at its best.

In the next swim, I fared poorly, taking only a single small chub of around 2lb, so moved above the weir. I stood on the bridge, and shielded my eyes against the sun, trying to spot any fish. I flicked in a couple of small chunks of bread, watched as they tumbled downstream,

and then suddenly disappear! As my eyes adjusted, I realised that there was a shoal of chub spinning about in mid-stream, swiftly engulfing anything which passed! I climbed the gate into the meadow, sneaked up to the edge of the river, and lofted in another lump of bread flake. It was in the water for seconds before a chevin hit it with force, and I soon netted another fish, this one of about 4lbs. A good start. I resumed my ‘flick and wait’, going back to the bridge to check the fish were still there, but otherwise enjoying the sunshine in the meadow. It’s been many years since I’ve laid back and watch the clouds scud by, or chewed a piece of grass, as I inspected bugs and flowers around me, and in the sunshine, it was truly blissful… Again, my bread was quickly snaffled, and another fish landed. I was quite happy to wait between bites, sniffing buttercups and honeysuckle, so continued my bait and wait tactics to try and settle the shoal…

By the end of a glorious summers day, I’d probably had about twenty casts, landed nine chub between 2-5lbs (ish) and a single bullhead, another reminder of my youth spent rooting under stones for the Millers Thumb

and Stone Loach in local streams. I’d seen nature at its most predatory, watched pairs of kingfishers buzz by beneath me in immaculate formation whilst standing on the bridge, startled rabbits and hares, inspected numerous colourful bugs and insects, seen shapes in the clouds, and relaxed amidst the daisies… if there is a more perfect day out, then I can’t think of it…if you haven’t fished the river before, go and have a go, you are in for a real treat!

O’GRADY EXTENDS WEDNESDAY STAY Owls Under-23 defender Connor O’Grady has extended his contract at Hillsborough by a further year.

Following a productive maiden season as a professional, the commanding central defender has committed until summer 2018.

The native Sheffielder rose through the academy ranks with the Owls and signed his first contract in 2016 after impressing on a consistent basis for the academy.

His progress continued in 2016/17 as the young stopper made his first team debut in the EFL Cup clash with Cambridge before playing his part in a memorable campaign for the Owls Development Squad.

Neil Thompson’s side, of course, lifted both

the PDL2 North and national championships.

O’Grady also earned international recognition, receiving a call-up to the Republic of Ireland Under-21 squad.

He told swfc.co.uk: “Last year was a different year for me moving up to the 23s and I think I’ve done reasonably well.

“I’m delighted to have signed another contract here.

WILDER ON BLADES APPOINT BRAYFORD’S FUTURE NEW CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER Chris Wilder has confirmed that John Brayford can leave Bramall Lane this summer.

Brayford, who spent nearly all last season on-loan at Burton Albion playing under Nigel Clough has returned to Shirecliffe with the rest of the squad this week, but Wilder says he has spoken to the player about his future.

The manager revealed: “I’ve spoken to John and he understands he’s available for transfer.

“We have continual dialogue with all the players, both those in and out of the team.

“John played his football away from Bramall Lane last season and did well. But we are trying to strengthen in that area and I don’t see him as part of the plans.”

Wilder added: “He is our player though and if he doesn’t move on then he will remain in the building and be treated properly as a Sheffield United player.”

New signing David Ball says the enthusiasm of the staff surrounding the chase to bring him to the club was the main factor in him moving to Rotherham United.

Despite a successful campaign with Fleetwood which saw the ex-Manchester City striker net 14 times as the Cod Army reached the playoffs, Ball was swayed by the plans being made

by Paul Warne and his staff at the AESSEAL New York Stadium.

Ball became close season signing number four when he penned a two-year deal last week, and he revealed that the club’s ambitions matched his own as he agreed to a move across the Pennines.

“He just excited me,” Ball said of his new boss Warne.

“He is a really honest man. He tried his hardest to bring me here and that had a big impression on me. Everything he wants to do in preseason and what he wants to do during the season all tick the boxes of how I see myself with Rotherham United.”

Warne stated on Ball’s arrival that he expects the former Peterborough operator will provide a creative spark that he has been looking to recruit throughout pre-season.

The 27-year-old says that he will look to bring goals and assists from a variety of positions, with his first competitive outing for the Millers set to be a return to his former club on the opening day.

“It was good to get a few goals,” Ball added on last season.

“I also got a few assists too. I think that is what I will hopefully bring to the team. Some creativity, but also chip in with some goals as well.

“I am someone who likes to create. My goals are mixed to inside and outside the box. I will work hard for the team, and the main aim is that the team get the three points.

“Over the past few seasons I have played centre-midfield. I have played as a number 10, up top and across the sides. I think I’ll bring that versatility to the team but I want to come here and play in my main position to get the goals to get us to where we want to be.

“It is a great place to play, I will be excited to come and play here every week. I seem to remember scoring a few years back when I played here, I really cannot wait to get going.”
