MUSEUMS AWARDED GRANT TO BRING STORIES ALIVE IN EX-MINING COMMUNITIES Doncaster museums have been awarded a grant of £78,850 to work with younger and older residents across the borough to explore the area’s mining heritage. Doncaster Heritage Services, which runs Cusworth Hall and Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery on Chequer Road, received
the grant from the Museum’s Association’s Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund which seeks to connect audiences with collections. The two-year intergenerational project will work with participants in three ex-mining communities: Denaby Main, Hatfield and Stainforth and
Woodlands which together tell the story of the area’s mining history from the sinking of the deep pits in the area in the early 20th century to the present day. The project will provide opportunities for participants to gain new skills and qualifications, meet new people and explore Doncaster
Museums’ mining collections, shedding new light on these collections based on their own experiences. Younger participants will record conversations with ex-miners and their families, and both older and younger participants will work together to curate exhibitions which will be
displayed at Cusworth Hall and in various locations across the borough. Nigel Ball, Cabinet Member for Public Health, Leisure and Culture, said: “The exciting project is a fantastic opportunity for our younger and older residents to work together in an exploration of our local mining heritage.
“It looks set to be a great experience for all involved where participants will benefit from sharing knowledge, developing new skills and exploring the fascinating mining collections at Doncaster’s museums. I look forward to seeing the project take shape.” The Project will involve local
partners in all three areas, including EPIC, Woodlands Speaks and the Well Doncaster Project based in Denaby. Students from Doncaster College and Doncaster University Centre will support participants to develop research, photography and creative writing skills. The National Mining Museum for
England, based in Wakefield, and the University of Leeds will also support participants in gaining new skills, and to explore the collections. If you would like to find out more about this project and get involved, contact jude.holland@ doncaster.gov.uk
