OLYMPIC CHAMPION TO ATTEND CITY RIDE Olympic champion Callum Skinner will be in attendance at this Sunday’s HSBC UK City Ride Sheffield, British Cycling has confirmed. Skinner, who won gold in the team sprint and silver in the individual sprint in Rio last summer, will start the riders off as well as taking part in a variety of activities on the day with the thousands of participants expected to descend on the streets of Sheffield. The HSBC UK City Ride programme, which got underway in June, will visit 14 cities across

the country in 2017 and is the first major step in British Cycling and HSBC UK’s ambition to get two million people cycling by 2020. The Sheffield HSBC UK City Ride will see participants begin at Endcliffe Park, before making their way into the heart of the city centre, passing the Town Hall riding through the Winter Garden, before heading towards Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane ground. The 8km route will also feature a shorter, accessible loop, suitable for all adapted bikes, giving entrants with

reduced mobility, families with young children or those building their confidence on a bike the chance to complete a shorter route. As well as exploring the route, the event will give young riders the opportunity to test their bike handling and pick up new skills on the HSBC UK Go-Ride course. Run by British Cycling coaches, the area will feature obstacles and challenges for all levels of rider to tackle. There will be bikes and helmets available to borrow and you will be able to find out about all of the

local cycling clubs and activities for children in the area. Younger participants will also be able to dress their bikes in the Kids’ Zone, which will house face-painting, a bib personalisation station and a caricature artist. Entrants will be able to benefit from the presence of fully-qualified technicians who will be able to advise on any mechanical issues, while other activities such as a virtual reality cycling experience, street velodrome and the Sir Chris Hoy Speed challenge – where participants can

free estimate daytime or evening call

challenge Sir Chris’ Olympic gold-medal winning sprint time – will ensure a fantastic day for entrants of all ages. A limited number of free hire bikes will be available from Tudor Square or Endcliffe Park on a first come, first served basis on the day, with details available at the below website. The events are completely free and participants can either register their participation at www.letsride.co.uk or enter on the day.

KILLERS RETURN FOR FOURTH TIME TO SHEFFIELD ARENA

The Killers last week announced a major UK and Ireland tour for November 2017. The tour will follow the release of the band’s upcoming fifth album, Wonderful Wonderful. The band will be returning to Sheffield Arena on Saturday 25th November, their fourth visit to the venue with all three previous visits being sell-out gigs. Tickets are now on general sale priced £50.40, £61.60 & £72.80 (including booking fee) from www. sheffieldarena.co.uk, through the ticket hotline on 0114 256 56 56 or in person from Sheffield Arena Box Office.

The Killers recently released the video for their dazzling new single, “The Man”, the first taster of the new album. The video was shot in and around Las Vegas and sees the band collaborate with the award-winning director Tim Mattia for the first time. The new tour announcement also follows on from a spectacular, hit-laden surprise set at Glastonbury which saw the band return to the festival for the first time since their 2007 Pyramid Stage headline show. Wonderful Wonderful will be The Killers’ first album since 2012’s chart-topping Battle Born. Recorded with the producer Jacknife Lee during album sessions in Las Vegas and Los Angeles, the album is shaping up to be the band’s most sonically forwardthinking record yet; an LP bursting with all of the blazing choruses and arena-filling anthems that make The Killers one of the world’s biggest and most beloved rock bands. Tickets will be limited to 4 tickets per person and are now on general sale.

You could experience a degree of frustration this week, and especially if your needs seem blocked or inhibited by the demands of others close to you. With your ruler so closely aligned to the Sun all week and squaring up to the rebellious vibe of Uranus, this could make you tetchy. Call for more...

There is an electricity arcing round your situation this week. This can make you very busy and active, but ultimately also very restless. Avoid trying to juggle so many things at once that you don’t achieve your main aims as this could prove frustrating Taurus. Call for more news and advice...

It could be at work or around any obligations that you routinely carry out, that you find yourself much less minded to go with the flow. Speaking your truth may shake up the situation that you’re unhappy with, but also it can be a step along the path to true personal realization. Call for more...

There continues to be a degree of compulsion, especially around your expenditure or what you eat and drink. With Uranus, the planet of freedom, jarring with the forceful combination of the Sun and Mars, the trick will be to not go against your core values Gemini. Call for more astral advice...

Sheffield’s adventurers, literary lovers and family thrill seekers are in for a treat as The Outdoor City Adventure Book Festival returns for its second year. Between Monday 10 July and Saturday 15 July at the Central Library, there will be a host of author talks, creative workshops, exhibitions and family activities. Most events are free and cover adventures from across the world, from Patagonia to the Thames Path, Ben Nevis, Birmingham, Alaska and more locally in Sheffield. Highlights include talks by celebrated artist Andy Beck on his 10 year project painting all the Lake District fells; a look at the life of Bill Tilman, giant of 20th century exploration; and from travel writer Tom Chesshyre who spent last summer walking along the River Thames from source to sea. Children are also invited to become Library Explorers and create their own treasure map, with book token prizes. Sheffield’s first-ever cycling piste map, featuring more than 45 places to freestyle on your bike, will also be shown at a special exhibition by local business Cotic Bikes in the Central Library foyer. Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Parks, said: “We’ve got another great line up for this year’s Adventure Book Festival and can’t wait to host it at the Central Library. “There’s something for everyone of all ages, and we all know how much Sheffield people love the outdoors. “The activities will give people a real insight into the daring exploits of others, and will hopefully encourage them to go on their own adventures. It will also showcase the range of activities taking place in our libraries.”

Alternative Confetti Ideas The tradition of throwing confetti is an old Pagan rite to wish the newlyweds a fruitful union. This tradition has been carried on through the centuries, and throughout the world. In Italy, it is traditional to throw nuts, raisins or petals to promote fertility and prosperity, and in many countries it’s tradition to throw rice. In modern times, it has become common practice to throw paper and petals over the newlyweds. It is thought that Ann Landers, an American columnist, is to thank for this after she

invented a story saying that birds were exploding after eating dried rice at weddings. Paper confetti has traditionally been used for many years, and comes in almost every colour you can think of. Foil can also be used. Vintage wedding confetti is a popular choice - think Shakespeare, Pride and Prejudice, or your favourite piece of music.

W WeddingGGuiuidede

Bubbles are a great alternative and look great on camera. Bubbles are eco-friendly, just make sure they won’t stain your wedding dress! Petals are also eco-friendly. They are becoming ever more popular as they are long lasting, biodegradable and smell great too.

Balloon releases are a great alternative. They can include little messages and are visually beautiful, with a retro feel. Animal releases are perfect for anyone wanting something a little different and special. From doves to butterflies, these make a great addition to any wedding. Before deciding on what you want, speak to your church and venue, as some do not allow certain types of confetti. Editorial supplied by UKbride

SMALL GRANTS TO BOOST LOCAL PROJECTS The Manor sky shined bright last bonfire night, thanks to council funding for the annual Manor Fields event. The bonfire and firework display is one of more than 260 local projects which received a small grant from Sheffield City Council last year. And event organisers say it has brought local people together, helped with community cohesion and reduced anti-social behaviour.

Now local councillors are again starting to allocate £255,000 of ‘ward pot’ funding to community groups and projects that will help their communities thrive. Many seek bids from local groups whilst others are allocating funds for local services, equipment and environmental improvements. Councillor Jayne Dunn, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods and Community Safety

at Sheffield City Council, said: “There are thousands of local groups in Sheffield doing excellent work to strengthen our communities. “Local councillors give small grants to help local projects. These cover all manner of things, from running events, tackling litter and antisocial behaviour, to boosting people’s skills and combatting loneliness. “We want more people to get involved and tell us what’s important to them locally, as well as, where applicable, bidding for a small grant.” Debbie Mathews, Chief Executive of the Manor and Castle Development Trust which helps organise the Manor Fields bonfire, said: “The bonfire was fantastic. We had a huge amount of people coming from the local areas, and also people who travelled here as they knew how good it was. “Without the funding contribution we wouldn’t have been able to run the event. It’s a really positive experience that brings people together who might not otherwise come together. And it’s something to look forward to at a time of year where there’s often anti-social behaviour in other areas, which we’ve not had.”

The Sheffield Wildcats Roller Hockey Club in Shiregreen also received £950 funding last year for a new kit. The club teaches local schoolchildren in the area, with more than 30 children attending. Head coach Keith Whitham said: “The grant from the Shiregreen Ward Pot Fund is being spent on our junior players’ Home and Away team strips. The grant will also help continue our kids’ development, whether they are beginners to skating or budding roller hockey players.”

People can find out more about local funding in their area and download an application form at www.sheffield.gov.uk/content/ sheffield/home/your-city-council/local-area. html or by calling 0114 205 7300. People can also have their say about what’s important to them locally at: sheffield. citizenspace.com/communities-businessstrategy/wardpriorities

CHAIR GYMNASTICS BOOST FOR DEMENTIA A new chair-based gymnastics exercise programme has significant benefits for people with dementia, says a report. More than 150 people have taken part in the Love to Move scheme run by the British Gymnastics Foundation (BGF). And research by Age UK found the scheme to have “demonstrable benefits in the physical, emotional and cognitive aspects of older people”. The organisers now aim to train more people to deliver the programme and make it more widely available. “This age and dementia-friendly programme is astonishing people with its life-changing benefits,” said BGF manager Patrick Bonner. “So many people involved are seeing their lives improving as a result and it is unthinkable that people are regaining functions which were thought to be lost because of participating in the Love to Move classes.” In South Korea and Japan, results have been so positive the programme has been completely state-funded and runs in every care home across the two countries. From Tokyo to Cambridgeshire... Exercise in any form can have a multitude of health benefits for those with mental and physical illnesses. Dementia is no exception.

When the BGF discovered a chairbased exercise programme was working wonders throughout care homes in Japan and South Korea, it was determined to bring it to the UK. Based on results published in 2016 from the original Japanese programme, it was clear to the BGF that these simple exercises - based around cognitive stimulation, memory arousal and music - could have a huge impact on the lives of dementia sufferers. By taking the core principles of the Japanese scheme and adapting them to suit British culture, the BGF developed the Love to Move programme in a pilot scheme. Can you tap your head and rub your stomach at the same time? Even if you can, it takes a lot of concentration. By practising it, you are increasing your ability for the right and left sides of your brain to process information independently of each other. The Love to Move programme is based on the concept of bilaterally asymmetrical movement (performing different movements with the right and left sides of the body at the same time). By increasing the capacity to perform bilateral movement, the brain increases the number of connections it makes between its neurons, resulting in an increase in

AMBASSADORS WANTED! YOUR WARD PRIORITIES From talking to older people across the city, we know that transport and access issues are one of the main causes of isolation – a problem that isn’t made easier living in a beautifully hilly city like ours. This project links together people aged 50 and over to work together where transport and access issues in communities are the main causes of isolation. This could be help from someone to leave the house, building confidence to use a mobility scooter, or support with access to public transport. We’re looking for participants and volunteers to get involved. To find out more about becoming an Access Ambassador, contact Adam Batty by emailing a.batty@syha.co.uk or ring us on 0114 2900 250 or www. agebettersheff.co.uk/first-steps/accessambassador

The City Council would like to know like to what people living in Sheffield feel should be the priorities for their ward councillors. Each ward in the city has 3 councillors who work to improve things for local people and represent them when decisions are made in the Town Hall. If your councillors are better informed about the things that are important to you then they can focus their attention on specific issues in your neighbourhood. The information you provide in this short questionnaire will help them identify the service providers, community organisations and local residents they need to work with. cognitive ability. For people with dementia, the Love to Move programme has been proven to increase their capacity to process everyday tasks such as feed themselves, do crafts and play bingo, as well as socialising with friends and family. Do you know a family member, a friend, a co-worker, who has dementia? Whether they’ve just been diagnosed, or have had the illness for a number of years, those close to them would give anything to see an improvement in their health. The BGF understands this and is keen to share its exercises with the public in the hope they can provide those affected, both now and in the future, with a practical and gentle way to improve their health. The BGF has created a downloadable booklet containing some of the key exercises for people to try with top tips from head coach Kim Hall. The guide aims to give an insight into the structure and history of the programme, as well as showing some of the key coordination exercises. Visible results Over a period of two years in the Cambridgeshire region, the Love to Move programme has delivered sessions focusing on improving co-ordination, posture, movement and core strength. Key results from pilot scheme feedback: • 71% of participants are reported to have had noticeable physical improvements • 86% of participants are reported to be socialising with other residents and staff better • 93% of participants of participants are reported to be happier and more settled • 100% of participants are reported as easier to connect with Results from the pilot scheme indicate exercises such as hand rotations, finger and thumb tapping, drawing shapes in the air and nose and ear grabbing, are effective ways to enhance co-ordination, whereas exercises focusing on balance and core have better equipped participants to sit, unaided, in their chairs. Social interaction is often difficult for those with dementia, especially for those who would not normally have the opportunity to mix with other residents in the same home. The pilot scheme gave these residents the opportunity to build bonds with one another, provide encouragement to their fellow Love to Movers, and socialise after the session. afterwards.

LOCAL ENTERTAINER LORRIE BROWN WINS AT THE NATIONAL TRIBUTE MUSIC AWARDS It’s been billed as ‘The tribute industries equivalent to the BRITS’ and last Wednesday The National Tribute Music Awards held its 3rd awards ceremony at The Athena in Leicester. The awards recognise the work done by the country’s top tribute artistes in an ever growing field of entertainment. Everyone was there, well in tribute form at least. Tina Turner, Kylie, Take That, Elton John, Lady

Ga Ga and Sheffield’s own tribute artiste, Lorrie Brown. Lorrie was receiving her 2nd award for her tribute to Kate Bush. Lorrie said, ‘It was an amazing night, it was planned with as much glitz and glam as the BRITS and everyone arrived at the red carpet in costume, in a limo followed by a champagne reception before the awards started. The BBC Central News team were there as well to broadcast the arriving acts’. The whole event was hosted by Champions who represent some of the country’s biggest stars and they put on a breathtaking show. Some of the tribute acts who performed a short set in between the presentations included, Lady Ga Ga, Little Mix, The Killerz, Madness, Take That and Tina Turner, who also won a lifetime achievement award. The tribute industry is one of the largest

sources of income now for many performers and is continuing to grow annually with a TV programme being planned by the BBC devoted to tribute acts. Lorrie is in the middle of a theatre tour with her show, ‘The Red Shoes. Our Kate Bush Story’ the show is backed by a live band and Lorrie has 10 costume changes in the show. There is also video footage telling the story of Kate’s career. When asked what made her choose to perform as Kate Bush, Lorrie said. ‘I have always been a huge fan of hers, I love her music and we had a similar background, we both grew up in Kent and dance was a big part of our early years. Plus she is so theatrical, you can never get bored of performing her music because its so inventive, she was way ahead of her time. If you watch her concert from Hammersmith Odeon in 1979 it was like nothing else around at the time. She was also one of the first acts to develop the headset microphone which allowed her to do her dance routines whilst singing’ As well as the theatre tour Lorrie has also just returned from a booking on P+O’s Ventura where she performed a cabaret set. Lorrie says, ‘That was an amazing experience as well. I wasn't sure how it would be received on the cruise ships, but I was surprised how many people came up and said they loved her music, mind you it was interesting boarding the ship with my props, I recreate the Babooshka routine with a double bass and had some funny looks walking up the gangplank with it’. One of the factors that went towards Lorrie winning the award was her recreation of Kate’s video to Wuthering Heights and Babooshka. ‘We went to a lot of trouble recreating the video

routine with the dance routine and even the cartwheel in the middle of the song. The video production was amazing recreating all the effects on the video’. The band played Sheffield last year at The Drama Studio and are hoping to be back in the Autumn. You can see the video by checking out the bands web site at www.redshoestribute.com

AIRPORT RAIL LINK PLANS UNVEILED Doncaster Council, Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership and Doncaster Sheffield Airport have taken the next step in exploring the potential of connecting the airport to the East Coast Mainline to provide a station. A study has been commissioned to determine the feasibility and strategic business case for a potential rail link and will be awarded through a competitive bidding process. The study is hoped to be completed by the end of the year. The airport has also unveiled early design concepts for the station which could serve the next major international airport for the UK in the North. An airport station off the East Coast Mainline could be a major economic boost for Yorkshire and the Sheffield City Region, having a transformational effect beyond the airport site as a catalyst for encouraging investment, providing new jobs and support the growing innovation district at the airport’s 1,600 acre site, known as Aero Centre Yorkshire. Ros Jones, mayor of Doncaster said: “Doncaster Sheffield Airport is a huge asset for Doncaster, the Sheffield City Region, Yorkshire and the North and we are committed to making it a big success. The opening of Great Yorkshire Way created exceptional links between the airport and the motorway network and has helped them achieve incredible growth. We are ambitious for the future and our concept to provide an East Coast Mainline station at Doncaster Sheffield Airport could certainly release its immense untapped potential and bring significant benefits to Doncaster and the wider region.” Steve Gill, chief executive of Doncaster Sheffield Airport said: “Doncaster Sheffield Airport is one of few regional airport sites in the UK which offers unconstrained physical and airspace capacity with the existing runway able to accommodate a throughput of 25 million passengers per

annum, providing an international gateway serving the east side of the country. An airport station could mean London is less than 80 minutes train travel away, and in many places quicker than travelling across to Heathrow or Gatwick on already congested routes. The proposal could also support boosting international trade, deliver improved regional connectivity and contribute towards government strategy to rebalance the economy. The proposal for the airport station shows how a quicker, more affordable and sustainable solution in the North can deliver much needed future UK aviation capacity for passengers and cargo, complementing planned investment in South East airports. These aspirational designs we’ve released aim to show the scale of our ambition for the station and we hope they inspire people to get behind this proposal.” Sir Nigel Knowles, chair of Sheffield City Region LEP, said: “The success of Aero Centre Yorkshire is a key part of our strategic plan to build a truly competitive centre of business excellence in Sheffield City Region. The airport’s new link road illustrates our simple and straightforward approach to doing business. In Sheffield City Region we just get things done and we look forward to working in partnership to deliver a new rail connection and station providing a connection from the airport to the East Coast Mainline. Through pulling together to achieve transformational change we are building a thriving, superconnected and successful economy.”

SUPERMARKETS CONSIDER ‘UBER-STYLE FUEL PRICE SURGES’ The RAC says introducing ‘surge pricing’ for fuel on UK forecourts would leave “a bad taste” in the mouths of hard-pushed drivers. Several reports suggest the country’s major supermarkets – including Sainsbury’s and Tesco – are investigating the possibility of an Uber-style approach, which sees prices rise in times of high demand. Already employed in the US and parts of Europe, artificial intelligence-based ‘e-pricing’ can also be applied to non-fuel goods in store. Motoring groups have been quick to respond with Simon Williams, RAC fuel spokesman, claiming surge pricing could “blow a smokescreen” over fuel prices at a time when trust in retailers is already low. Mr Williams believes the driving public would take a cynical view of the practice, which would be seen as a way for sellers to increase prices “by stealth”.

Meanwhile, FairFuelUK founder Howard Cox says the introduction of demand-inflated pricing would remove “any consideration of fairness”, claiming hard-working motorists and small businesses would continue to be “exploited”. Fuel prices have been on a gradual downward trajectory in recent months, as a result of the falling cost of oil. Following pressure from the RAC earlier in June, Asda slashed its pump price by 2p a litre for both petrol and diesel, with the other major supermarkets later following suit. Simon Williams said: “It is odd that the supermarkets who command high volume sales and claim to operate on low margins would chose to manipulate prices in such a way at the risk of alienating customers. “Fuel is a commodity product and its price is clearly promoted on forecourt totems to draw in customers. “Therefore, increasing the price of fuel which they have already bought at one wholesale price seems very underhand. “We closely monitor daily fuel prices to increase transparency and to encourage supermarkets and retailers to play fair with motorists. “However, if they are able to increase the price during the course of a day then it blows a smokescreen over the true cost of fuel.”

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

I’ve been out four times this week, but I’m saddened to admit to only one decent result… At the new pool I was invited to, I managed to sneak out for a couple of hours with a fly rod. I’m the first to admit that I’m not very good with a fly rod, in fact, I’d go as far as to say that I’m terrible at fluff chucking, but I really fancied a crack at the wild carp within the pool. I fired out a few mixers, the fish seemed to be feeding well, and I started thrashing the air in a vain attempt to get my biscuit fly anywhere near them. Within a few seconds, the air was filled with leaves which fluttered down around me as I whipped them off any tree within thirty yards, flailing valiantly in my efforts. By the time I’d worked myself into a lather of sweat, I’d managed just one take, from a fish which came directly at me, and I pulled the fly out of its mouth on the strike! However, I did manage a new personal best oak tree, a couple of good sized willows, and a beech or two… rubbish! My second visit was to a local venue, and it was perch that I sought. I’d heard rumours of 4lb fish, so with nothing but worm and red maggots in copious amounts, I sallied forth and set up a float to target weedy margins where I’d been informed they were to be caught. I had a dozen bites, landing all twelve. Unfortunately, all of my ‘dirty dozen’ were just that; dirty. Not a single fish, but a legion of the hated Signal Red Crayfish which had launched into a frenzy of activity due to rising water temperatures. All were humanely despatched with a knife through the carapace, and binned safely away from the water. After two hours, I’d had enough, so moved back to the nearby River Trent to try and emulate my recent success where I’d banked a number of decent chub… I sat for around two hours, enjoying the sunshine, but not the fishing. Half a dozen tip rattles saw six lively (but small) perch come to the bank, and that was it… rubbish! A day later, and an opportunity came to use up the last of my worms; and I headed to the local reservoir, intent on dropshotting a few wrigglers into the depths of a spot I know well, so once again, stood in blazing sunshine trying to entice a bite. I failed miserably, spending a good hour searching the likely spots, switching between worm and lure, changing hook sizes, altering presentations, but it didn’t bring any success. I moved on the River Churnet, where I managed to bank a single, solitary perch from under my feet; and so ended a third session… rubbish!

One last chance; a Friday session on a stillwater which perplexes many, but where I seem to have been able to catch a few tench and bream… I arrived early, unloaded the van, and walked onto the lake. Despite a fantastic weather forecast, and the sun slowly breaking up the clouds, I was the only one there, with the pick of the pegs. As is usual, I spent a while wandering to see if I could spot fish, but although the lake was flat calm, I couldn’t see any fish rolling, or any giveaway bubbles, or anything else for that matter, but did note that willow fluff had collected at one end of the lake, indicating that the wind had been pushing that way, and was likely to do so later in the day. With that as my only clue, I barrowed the kit over to that end, and set up with a couple of small method feeders, packed them with groundbait and 2mm pellets, added a short four inch hooklink, and banded an 8mm wafter onto a size 12 hook. Both were cast out around fifty yards, just short of the far bank reed line, and it was time to sit back and enjoy the morning as the mist burned off the lake… The amount of natural food in the lake at this time of year is simply astonishing. The sheer number of fry flitting through the margins, the abundance of flies, midges, beetles and all kinds of other creatures that dotted the surface of the water was absolutely amazing, and because of it, I was unsure I would get much action; surely fish would concentrate on those rather than angler’s baits? Within a few minutes however, the method mix had started to collapse, and short bleeps emanated from the alarms, as small twitches of the bobbins indicated fish were near the bait. I always fish very tight lines here as it’s a shallow lake affected by undertow, so although the feeders are small, they are heavy too, giving superb bite indication. A few seconds later, and the first real bite of the session saw the spool slowly spin as a fish moved away from me. Lifting the rod, the first tench of the session kited away to the right, and I managed to control it open water rather than try and tire it close in near the reeds; tench love the reeds, and I didn’t want to lose it! A couple of minutes later, and a shiny green fish of around 5lb was in the net, then quickly photographed, and safely returned…a good start! The next fish was a bream, a dark grey slab of just over 6lb, and the third fish, a pristine roach of 1lb 6oz… this was shaping up to be a good visit! I did find that accuracy was essential; if I hit the spot, which I suspect was a bloodworm bed, the fish were on the bait in seconds… if I missed, the feeder was ignored, and after two hours of fishing, I’d started to witness fish rolling and swirling over the area I was targeting, so knew it was prime time for a bite! As the morning continued, I tried fishing corn on the hook, hoping for another roach, but strangely, this was completely ignored; I knew there were some big silvers about, but it didn’t tease them at all, so I swapped back to the wafters. I’ve been using the Spotted Fin Classic Corn and Catalyst Pellet wafters mainly, both have produced good results, but today, it was definitely the Classic Corn which had the edge; very strange, especially as I couldn’t

buy a bite on corn! I have a feeling that bottom baits were getting missed as the fish rooted up the silty bottom, but the wafters, lifting in the turbulence, were more ‘in your face’ and taken readily. By mid-morning, I was flying. The fish were coming regularly, and as lunch time approached, I had to take the rods out to prepare my food; it was that busy! I bolted down my food, watching fish rolling and patrolling the reedline, and quickly got the baits back in… the fun continued until about 1pm, and then it went dead, with not a twitch to be felt, nor a bleep to be heard… The lake is known to ‘switch off’ at certain periods, and with the sun high in the sky, I felt that the session had ended, so packed up and prepared to return to the van. Further down the lake, another angler had caught two carp, and two tench, the only other club member on the venue, at the other end of the lake, hadn’t had a bleep, so I suspect that the wind was a major factor on the day. Picking the right direction had certainly made all the difference, and my tally for the trip seemed to confirm that; I’d landed fifteen quality

WEDNESDAY 23S BEGIN WITH A WIN

The visitors enjoyed long spells of controlled possession after break and looked comfortable with their one-goal lead. But the Tigers were not prepared to go down without a fight and levelled through former Owls academy striker Kyle Jordan, who stroked the ball home

The Owls Under-23s kicked off their pre-season campaign with a 3-2 victory over Worksop at Sandy Lane. A last-gasp George Hirst penalty sealed the win that the young Owls deserved after twice being pegged back by the hosts. Neil Thompson’s side began brightly and went on to dominate possession throughout the game on Monday evening. It took four minutes for the Owls to fashion the first clear chance as skipper Jack Stobbs fizzed the ball across goal for Fraser Preston, who stabbed just wide of the back post. Striker Deon Moore put the Owls ahead after capitalising on a defensive error with 25 minutes on the clock and Matt Penney almost doubled the lead moments later with a rasping long range effort typical of the youngster. On the stroke of half time, Worksop drew level with Jack Hague planting an unstoppable header past Dan Wallis but Wednesday’s response was swift. Stobbs’ wide delivery found Moore in space to dispatch his volley into the net right on the whistle.

THOR BOLT INTO BRAMALL LANE FOR CHARITY The Blades are set to host a local rock band with all the proceeds being donated to a worthy charity. Sheffield’s ‘Thor - Gods of Rock’ will play United’s Platinum Suite on Saturday 29th July, with all proceeds being donated to the UK Solidarity Fund, which has recently been set up and is administered by the Red Cross, where funds raised will go to people and families affected by terrorist attacks in the UK, such as recent incidents in Manchester and London. United and Stoke City have already confirmed that £1 from every ticket sold for this month’s pre-season friendly at Bramall Lane will be donated to the UK Solidarity Fund. And now ‘Thor - Gods of Rock’ will boost funds

MOORE MOTIVATED FOR MILLERS SUCCESS New signing Kieffer Moore has described his move to Rotherham United as potentially ‘the start of something special’. The striker penned a season long loan with the Millers from Championship side Ipswich Town yesterday, and has joined up with Paul Warne’s side on their pre-season tour of Austria. The 24-year-old looks set to play a part against Floridsdorfer this evening (7pm kick off local time), and admitted that his early impressions of the club have given him the belief that there are good times ahead. “I am delighted to come here and play for Rotherham,” he told www.themillers.co.uk “I think this could be the start of something really special coming here. I think the upcoming season is going to be a really good one for the club.

They say: “We were formed in February 2014, in the same way as all of the great bands...in a pub, over a beer, ‘Thor - Gods Of Rock’ bring an arena show to the local venues of the North of England. You can forget the run of the mill, jeans and black tee shirt performances. ‘Thor - Gods Of Rock’ give a high octane, high energy show, complete with capes and costumes! These guys will be on the stage, on the tables, in the crowd, on the bar, nowhere is out of bounds. With a constantly changing set list made up of songs from some the world’s greatest rock bands there’s something for every true rocker! Doors open at 8pm, there will be a rock DJ and a late bar. Tickets cost £10 and are available from the SUFC Ticket Office, via telephone on 0114 253 7200 or online “This is the perfect move for me. I want to come out here and play, and try and get as many games and goals as I can. I believe at the moment I am hitting some of my best form. I have come into pre-season really fit and I am ready to go now.” Moore, a former Yeovil and Forest Green front-man, was another of the new arrivals to cite boss Warne as a major influence in his decision to join despite reported interest from other clubs. The Torquay-born hit-man is now aiming to repay the faith shown in him, after flying straight out from Ipswich’s game in Ireland to join up with his new boss. “The major factor for me coming here was the gaffer,” he added. “I think he really sold it to me. I believed everything he said when we spoke. He wants to move the club forward. I was inspired by his vision and I firmly believe that this season we will give it a right go. “It is part and parcel of football, you have to be prepared to move and jump on a plane and travel at any moment. Circumstances change in an instant. Coming out here and getting straight into training isn’t a problem. I know what needs to be done and I have a strong mindset and I wanted to get straight over here.”

STEARMAN STEADIES THE BLADES SHIP WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH Richard Stearman has bolstered the Blades’ defensive ranks after an undisclosed fee was paid to Fulham for his services. Before the 29-year-old made the move, the seeds of doubt were beginning to sprout amongst the fan base. Many were concerned that the recruitment had focused too heavily on promoting players from lower divisions. That formula worked rather well last year, but the same outcome isn’t likely in the Championship. The signing of Stearman, who has over 250 appearances at this level, has decreased the calls for a proven Championship operator. On the move, Chris Wilder told the clubs website: “Richard will undoubtedly strengthen us, he’s a calm influence in the dressing room and every manager who I have spoken to about him says he has outstanding leadership qualities and will offer 100%, on and off the pitch.” It is unclear whether Wilder will opt to stick with three central defenders next season, or whether he will switch to a more traditional back four. However, the comments he made following the transfer could suggest that Stearman will be an upgrade on Jake Wright. A harsh statement to make about a player who has never lost in red and white, but a question mark hangs over his ability to play in the second tier. Wilder identified the former-Premier League player as his number one target in the transfer window, which seems strange given the summer long saga that involves Ricky Holmes of Charlton and Ryan Leonard of Southend. The former will not be joining Sheffield United this year, the midfielder has signed a new three-year-deal at The Valley.

OWLS 2017/18 MATCHDAY PRICES The Owls are pleased to announce that matchday prices at Hillsborough have been frozen for the second successive season. The flexible pricing structure introduced ahead of the 2015/16 campaign will once more be in operation next term. All home games will be selected from Categories A to G and priced accordingly. Further savings can be made by joining the Owls Membership, packages for which were announced earlier today. Thousands of supporters snapped up Memberships last season and numbers are expected to grow even further this time round. All Members receive a range of benefits, including a £5 discount on matchday tickets, Category G aside. Adult Members continue to receive a double discount on select fixtures, offering a £10 saving. Memberships are on sale now and available at the Sheffield Wednesday Online Shop, the Owls Megastore or by telephone on 03700 201867. Visit www.swfc.co.uk for full details of the Owls Membership for 2017/18 and to view all matchday categories for 2017/18. Ticket details for the Owls opening home fixtures will follow.

FIT ROVERS Club Doncaster Foundation’s third Fit Rovers course has produced consistently excellent results, achieving a combined weight loss of eight stone, four pound. The eight-week course has provided them with the chance to make dramatic life style changes with weekly interactive workshops and exercise sessions tailored to the needs of every individual. Along with the impressive weight loss between them, the group also managed to drop a combined 103cm from their waist circumference. Proud of the group’s continual hard work, programme leader, Scott Copeland said: “Once again the graduates from our latest Fit Rovers programme have achieved and surpassed the goals they set themselves in week one. “Every single person has their own story and reasons for attending Fit Rovers and whilst stats like weight loss and waist circumference really stand out that’s not where the transformation ends. “All 16 participants that completed the course showed an increase in their wellbeing as measured by the WHO 5 wellbeing index, 13 of these were deemed significant improvements. “Other changes include increased consumption of fruit and veg, increased exercise levels and an increase in self confidence. “Having completed a number of these courses now, we are confident that we can continue these fantastic results with our next group starting on August 10. The results become the third consecutive success story from the Fit Rovers programme, as the participants continue to thrive under the guidance of the team. Although the next course opens up for a new set of participants, the Fit Rovers Vets sessions allows graduates from the course to continue their weekly evening sessions held at the Keepmoat. For more information on the course, contact Scott on fitrovers@clubdoncasterfoundation.co.uk / 01302 764663

FOCUS ON HILLSBOROUGH The Strines Inn It’s only a short drive from the heart of Hillsborough, but the Strines Inn could be in a different world! Established almost 750 years ago, this beautiful olde worlde country pub has been a favourite for generations of local residents. Boasting open fires and a superb menu of freshly prepared, home-cooked food, it is both a wonderful place for a drive out, and a famous resting place for walkers enjoying the breath-taking countryside surrounding the Inn. The Strines boasts an impressive array of traditional real ales, and it is both dog and child-friendly – a special highlight each year for the kids is the chance to see the flocks of local pheasants!

Centre Manager John Watkins and his team take great pride in the centre - a number of recent refurbishments to the facilities in the Exchange means a visit is even more enjoyable. There are frequent promotions and events for all the family to take part in including a range of activities available free throughout the summer holidays! moorlands of the Peak District, the eastern half is in lower agricultural land and contains the parish's significant habitations, which include the Sheffield suburb of Stannington, as well as Oughtibridge and Worrall, and the villages of High Bradfield and Low Bradfield. The parish also includes several reservoirs, and a number of minor settlements. Bradfield is located 8 miles (13 km) from Sheffield city centre and 14 miles (23 km) from Barnsley. On 6 July 2014, Stage 2 of the 2014 Tour de France from York to Sheffield, passed through the village. It was also the location of the seventh climb of the stage, the Category 4 Côte de Bradfield. It was 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) long at an average gradient of 7.4%. Bradfield is one of the largest parishes in England, and covers extensive moor and agricultural land around the Damflask Reservoir, Dale Dike Reservoir, Strines Reservoir, and Agden Reservoirs, including the Bradfield, Midhope, and Broomhead moors and eastern parts of the Howden moors. The western end of the parish reaches to the upper parts of the

Upper Derwent Valley with part of its boundary forming Yorkshire’s border with Derbyshire. The northern part of the parish includes the Langsett reservoir and Midhope reservoir, and borders the town and civil parish of Stocksbridge. The eastern edge reaches the western extent of the urban spread of Sheffield, and includes the suburb of Stannington, as well as the villages of Oughtibridge, Wharncliffe Side, and Worrall. Minor habitations within the parish include Midhopestones, Upper Midhope on the northern edge, and Dungworth in the southeastern part. The moorland villages of High Bradfield and Low Bradfield are located within the parish. High Bradfield possesses a Gothic revival church, and the earthworks of a motte and bailey castle. Low Bradfield is less historic, having been largely destroyed in the Great Sheffield flood of 1864. The parish extends across the City of Sheffield electoral wards of Stocksbridge and Upper Don and Stannington Ward, and covers more than a third of the land area of Sheffield City Council.

OWLS IN THE PARK 2017

Sheffield Wednesday have confirmed that Owls in the Park 2017 will take place on Sunday 3 September. The later date ties into Wednesday’s 150th anniversary celebrations given the club was officially formed on 4 September 1867. Owls in the Park has fast become the city’s most high profile community event, attracting thousands upon thousands of supporters to Hillsborough Park since its inception in 2013. Now, this year, the club’s annual

fun day, in association with the Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme, goes to the next level. Fans will once again meet and greet the players, head coach Carlos Carvalhal and chairman Dejphon Chansiri before the event culminates in a musically synchronised blue and white themed firework display. Long term partners Hallam FM will take the main stage throughout the day from 1.00pm, hosting a range of family activities until

around 7.00pm, when live music kicks off Owls in the Dark, if you will! All eyes switch to the stadium around 8.15pm with the firework display to round off what promises to be a truly memorable occasion on the anniversary calendar. Local charities will be out in force, with no less than 26 attending last year and more expected this time round. Support Dogs UK again lead the charity theme, with an unrivalled dog show to entertain children and adults alike. Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind, the Sheffield Children’s Hospital, St Luke’s Sheffield Hospice and Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice will also be present amongst many others. The usual mix of craft stalls, catering outlets, licensed bars and entertainment can be found elsewhere, alongside the biggest funfair yet hosted at this everpopular event. Watch this space for further exciting additions but what we can say for now is that Owls in the Park 2017 is simply NOT to be missed!
