NATIONAL AWARD FOR DONCASTER PARKS Four of Doncaster’s parks have been recognised as amongst the best in the country, having been given Green Flag awards.

The prestigious award, which is given annually to the best parks and green spaces in the UK, is globally renowned as a hallmark of quality

and helps to attract visitors from across the country. In addition to an award for Cusworth Hall and park, which already had Green Flag

status, new awards for Bentley, Quarry and Sandall Parks were announced by Keep Britain Tidy on 18 July. The awards recognise the fantastic progress being made in creating attractive and enjoyable open spaces for Doncaster’s residents and visitors. A partnership between council staff, dedicated groups of volunteers and ‘Friends-of’ groups, has seen these parks develop to such a high standard that they will now be listed as amongst the best parks in the country. The timing of the award couldn’t be better, as it comes half

way through ‘Love Parks Week’, where people across the country are celebrating the fantastic parks where they live. Doncaster Council has supported this event with a lot of online activity to promote parks on social media. Cabinet member for Communities, the Voluntary Sector and Environment, Cllr Chris McGuinness, said: “This is an absolutely fantastic achievement, and I want to thank all of the staff and hardworking volunteers that continue to put in so much time and effort to make our

local parks even more enjoyable. “I’m so pleased that this hard work has been recognised with national awards for these four wonderful open spaces, and I’m sure that Green Flag status will encourage even more people to

get out and enjoy these parks in the future.” Following the award wins, there will be small celebration events at Bentley, Quarry and Sandall parks on Friday 21 July, which will give council staff and volunteers a chance to

recognise their hard work and celebrate this achievement. For more information about parks in Doncaster, use #LoveParks on Facebook and Twitter, and visit www. doncaster.gov.uk

A 20mph speed would help make the city centre a more attractive place to visit, and enhance the regeneration of the central area. It may also help reduce the fear of collisions and contribute towards the creation of a more pleasant, safer and accessible environment for residents, businesses and visitors. ALBERT SNODGRASS How did the farmer find his wife? Tractor.

“Sarcasm will get you nowhere in life.” my boss told me. “It got me to the ‘International Sarcasm’ finals in Chile in 2009.” I replied. “Really?” “No” This morning I used Red Bull instead of water to make my coffee. After 15 minutes of driving I realised that I’d left my car at home! My Gran died because we couldn’t remember her blood type. As she died, she kept insisting for us to “be positive,” but it’s hard without her. Apparently David Hasselhoff is changing his name to David Hoff. He can’t be bothered with the Hassel anymore. I walked down a street where the houses were numbered 64K, 128K, 256K, 512K and 1MB. That was a trip down memory lane! What’s a foot long, made of leather and sounds like a sneeze? A shoe. I was telling my doctor earlier how my tennis elbow was really hurting. She said “how many years have you had it for?” I said “15 Love”. Apparently I snore so loudly it scares the other passengers in the car I’m driving.

SHEFFIELD ARENA TO HOST THE MMA BATTLE OF BRITAIN Hot on the heels of Sheffield Arena’s first ever MMA event this Saturday, 22nd July we are delighted to announce that our second MMA event, The Battle of Britian, will be here on Saturday 23rd September and sees Scott Askham go toe-to-toe with 'The Bigslow', Luke Barnatt. Both of these fighters have flown the flag for this country in the middleweight division both domestically and abroad. From competing on the regional and national shows all the way up to the fighting on the biggest stages for the biggest promotions but despite the fact that they have earned their wares in the same weight-class and, at some points in their careers, in the same promotion this fight has previously failed to materialise. Although their paths have never crossed they have certainly been on each others radars as fans for each fighter have fuelled the fire with the constant question of who would take the bragging rights if this battle did ever happen. Well, that question is just weeks away from finally being answered and, as was revealed by Scott Askham in an in-cage interview with ACB's play-by-play commentator, Bryan Lacey, at the Doncaster based promotion 'Caged Steel' it is now booked and set to go down on September the 23rd at iconic Sheffield Arena, a venue just a stones throw away from Askham's hometown of Hemsworth. Some thought this fight was set to be filed in the 'what if' section of UK MMA after Luke Barnatt made the move to Light-Heavyweight for his last fight against Swedish Man Mountain Max Nunes but after Barnatt dispatched of Nunes in under a round he took to the mic to make this statement: 'That was my second fight at light-heavyweight a division I now have two wins and two knock outs in so my future does lie here but I have one more bit of business down at middleweight, a fight the fans have been after for a long while, so Scott Askham I'm coming for you! ACB, lets set this up for September! Scott, I'm coming to knock you out!!' When asked his response to this statement last

night Askham replied 'He doesn't know what he's talking about! He's the one who's been knocked out twice and I've never been finished. This fight has been a long time coming and I'm coming to take his head clean off!' Further fuel will be added to the fire this coming Saturday the 22nd of July at ACB 65 in Sheffield as was also revealed in the interview with Askham that both fighters will face-off in the cage at this event and ahead of their big fight in September. Askham was adamant that when they actually do look into each others eyes next week Barnatt will realise he's bitten off more than he can chew! 'It'll be a different story when he looks in my eyes. He can't hide behind a keyboard then so let's see what he has to say when we come face-to-face!' Barnatt has never been one to back-down from a fight though and with his impressive record and with being the higher ranked fighter of the two he will be looking to solidify that position with an impressive victory on September 23rd. When asked about the fight he said 'The fights not the hard part, the weight cut is the toughest part of me fighting at middleweight but I will make that weight one more time, knock him out and then get back to chasing down that light-heavyweight belt'. Arguments for and against both fighters have already started on social media as to who will win this 'Battle of Britain' but let's be honest, we already have a winner and it's that old clichè - the fans won as soon as this fight was signed! Tickets for this epic fight will be on sale from Monday the 17th of July at 12 noon online through this web site, in person at Sheffield Arena Box Office or through the ticket hotline on 0114 256 56 56. Tickets are priced £22.40, £33.60, £56, £84, £112 & £140 (including booking fee) and are available from the Arena web site www. sheffieldarena.co.uk or the ticket hotline on 0114 256 56 56.

What has more than 2,000 feet, boundless enthusiasm and energy and lights up Sheffield’s autumn darkness? The St Luke’s Hospice Night Strider of course! Night Strider is the annual nocturnal half marathon and 10k walking challenge that aims to raise more than £130,000 towards patient care at Sheffield’s only hospice. Last year’s event saw more than 1,000 St Luke’s supporters take to the streets as darkness fell on the city on an October evening. And already entries are coming in for Night Strider 2017, which makes its return on October 7 – and promises to be the most spectacular Night Strider yet! Starting out from Tudor Square in Sheffield city centre as darkness falls, the walk takes in some of Sheffield’s finest locations as it heads out towards Ecclesall and then back to the Tudor Square finish line. With no running involved, there’s plenty of time to take in the city’s best known views by moonlight as walkers embark on their nocturnal challenge. Either a full half marathon distance or a shorter 10k route, Night Strider is open to everybody over the age of 10 - though participants aged 10 to 17 must be registered and accompanied by another participant aged 18 or over - and is suitable for all ages and abilities. Wheelchair users are encouraged to take part in Night Strider but due to the nature of the route and distance it is advisable they should source suitable assistance throughout the challenge. “This will be the third year of Night Strider and every year it gets better and better, with more people signing up to enjoy a great fun challenge and raise money for Sheffield’s only hospice” said St Luke’s Events Coordinator Greg van Heeswijk. “It will be a magical spectacle, with hundreds of people illuminated with lights striding together under the Sheffield night sky, with every step helping us raise the vital funds needed to ensure we can continue providing the very best care for all our patients and their families. “This year we’re expecting a big contingent of four legged friends too! “Come along and join the party – it’s a great family night out for anybody who wants to support a fantastic cause.” The individual entry fee is £25 - to sign up simply visit www.nightsrider.co.uk

GET LOST!! IN THE MAIZE MAZE AT CAWTHORNE

Another unique giant puzzle of pathways within a field of maize. It grows taller than the tallest person you know. A real brain teaser, the maze will test your powers of deduction and navigation to the limit. This year it is truly amazing. In May we were worried that we weren't going to have a maze. All the dry and hot weather meant the seeds just sat in the ground and didn't germinate. But thankfully we eventually got rain. It has been growing at the rate of over a foot a week the last few weeks and will be the tallest it has ever been at opening on Satureday 22nd July. DRESSING FOR MENOPAUSE - TOP TIPS Hot flushes are one of the most common symptoms of menopause, affecting around 75% of women. They’re sudden, spontaneous, and can be pretty uncomfortable. Yet, with the right preparation, there’s no need to let hot flushes get in the way of living your life. Key to combating these irritating hot spells is dressing in menopause-friendly clothing.

Choose your fabrics wisely Attention! Put down the waterproof, nylon jacket and step away from that polyester trouser suit. Synthetic fabrics aren’t ideal for anyone, let alone women subject to menopausal hot flushes. Textiles like polyester, nylon, rayon, spandex and acrylic are comprised of man-made fibres that don’t breathe as well as those made of natural fibres. Instead, choose clothing made of breathable fabrics like linen, Layer up cotton and denim. Dressing in layers makes it easy to adapt For the summertime, seersucker—a thin, to those quick, unexpected heat waves. puckered style of cotton—is a particularly Instead of pullovers, opt for easy-tomenopause-friendly fabric that’s both remove cardigans with thin camisoles for fashionable and breathable. As an alternative to heavy choose loose-knit cardigans made from winter jackets, choose a quilted gilet that’s Merino wool, which is unique it its ability easily to layer over jumpers and t-shirts. to simultaneously insulate and breathe. Accessories like scarves, gloves and knit hats will also keep you warm in Show some skin chilly weather, whilst remaining easy to Fortunately, a lot of contemporary remove should a hot flush creep up out fashions happen to work very well of nowhere. For example, cropped jumpers and overcoats, the more adaptable trousers leave an ideal amount of skin you can be. exposed at the ankle, making it easy for air to circulate around your legs.

Similarly, v-neck t-shirts and three quarter length blouses are good alternatives to polo necks and long sleeves. Pack practical items in your bag A handbag has long been a lady’s best friend, and there’s a reason handbags keep getting bigger and bigger. They’re not just a fashion accessory, but a portable closet, office desk and bathroom cabinet all wrapped up in one. Your handbag can also be a reliable repository of relief when a hot flush hits. Do yourself a favour and buy a bag that’s big enough to store essential hot-flushcombating accessories. Before you leave the house, make sure to throw in a mini hand-held fan, a reusable water bottle (staying hydrated helps your body regulate temperature), a cold gel pack and any prescribed medicine or supplements you use. Hot flushes may be an inevitable part of menopause, but they don’t have to make your life miserable. Dressing for hot flushes is just one simple way to stay cool in quite an uncool situation.

FIRE SAFETY ADVICE - 50+ MEETING At our Sheffield50+ meeting last week our speakers were the Fire Safety Team at the Fire and Rescue Headquarters. This was not only an interesting and informative discussion but a timely reminder that we should all think more about fire safety in our homes. Here are a few points that were raised:How safe is your home? You can carry out your own home safety check, by following five quick steps. Smoke alarms - Working smoke alarms give you an early warning to a fire in your home, giving you and your family the vital extra minutes needed to take action and escape. Check if: You have a smoke alarm on every floor of your home. Your smoke alarm is working. Do this by holding down the ‘test’ button until it beeps. Your smoke alarm is free from dust. If you need a smoke alarm, most supermarkets and DIY shops sell them from as little as £5 each.

TRAMLINES FESTIVAL TAKES OVER THE CITY CENTRE WITH THE PEACE GARDENS STAGE FROM SMOKE BBQ AND STREET THEATRE AT BARKERS POOL Peace Gardens Stage sponsored by Smoke BBQ returns for Tramlines 2017 with a jam-packed programme whilst world-class street performers will entertain the crowds at Barker’s Pool. The Peace Gardens Stage has become a crucial part of Tramlines, showcasing Sheffield artists with a global flavour and musicians from various youth and community groups, presented by local DJ and promoter, Papa Al. This stage will feature music from the Caribbean, Angola, Ghana, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Latin America, all played by Sheffield based musicians. From the first act featuring the amazing dance moves of Angolan dancer Angelina Abel, to the closing party on Sunday headed up by the bombastic 11-piece Mango Rescue Team, Papa Al guarantees a two day show that will get the crowd moving and shaking. On Saturday there's ska beats from Smiling Ivy; pure Congolese dance music from Soukous Revelation; high energy tropical Afro-funk from the Forefathers; brass driven reggae and ska from Steel City Rhythm; roots reggae and lover's rock from Truly Apparent; blistering ska and reggae with Jungle Lion and headlining, infectious West African vibes from the nationally famous KOG & the Zongo Brigade. Sunday tips its hat to Sheffield's youth and community activities and kicks off with rapidly ascending Barnsley based indie rock quartet, Sundance. It will also feature blues and reggae from the young Rogue Fiesta, the band

who met at Boomtown Festival, Concord Youth Brass Band and the finals of the internationally acclaimed Dope 'n' Mean breakdance competition. Meanwhile, locally based Musical Works presents a four hour showcase featuring performances by young adults with learning difficulties, together with some of Sheffield's finest hip hop and r'n'b artists. This will include 5 bands from Under The Stars, a music project for adults with learning disabilities. Also featured is Otis Mensah, a widely acclaimed Sheffield based hip-hop MC who is currently performing all over the country. Barker’s Pool outside the City Hall will play host to some of the best street theatre performers on the circuit over the Tramlines weekend. As is previous years, this has been put together by Professor Vanessa Toulmin from Sheffield University, an expert on the history of circus entertainment in the UK and is

delivered by Yellow Bus Events with their iconic yellow school bus used a base for the performers. Roaming the streets of Sheffield and performing to the crowds at Barker’s Pool will be acts including Granny Turismo, a group of grannies gone bad who rampage around on souped-up shopping trollies. Also in attendance will be local madhatter, Maynard FlipFlap, St Joans Ambulance and many more wacky performers. This is a great place to bring families with many of the acts including interactive elements. Whilst entry to the Peace Gardens is free, the area is subject to capacity and safety restrictions. Bag searches will be in operation and visitors will be unable to bring outside alcohol into this area. The last remaining tickets for the wristbanded areas of the festival are still available from just £45 plus booking fee. Tickets are on sale from www.tramlines.org.uk

SHEFFIELD PREPARES FOR TRAMLINES TAKEOVER THIS WEEKEND Now into its ninth year, the well-established inner-city musical extravaganza that is Tramlines returns with its biggest, boldest and best festival yet. Taking place from Friday 21st July to Sunday 23rd July, Tramlines has a new-look site now taking place across 5 stages with over 70 genrespanning acts. Without the hassle of

camping and the chance of getting knee deep in mud, plus all the benefits of a festival such as grand production, light and sound, Tramlines is one of the best value festivals around at just £45 plus booking fee for a threeday weekend ticket. This year once again the line-up is an expertly curated eclectic affair featuring everything from grime to

indie, hip hop to dub, soul to funk, reggae to rock, r&b and pop. As such, expect to see spectacular sets from The Libertines, All Saints, Kano, Metronomy, Primal Scream, Toots & The Maytals, Akala, Cabbage, Cate Le Bon, Hot 8 Brass Band, Lady Leshurr, Loyle Carner, M.O, The Gospel House Choir, Omar Sou-

leyman, The Coral, The Magic Gang, The Pharcyde, Twin Atlantic, We Are Scientists, The Age of LUNA, The Big Moon, Blaenavon, Bossy Love, Champion, Don Letts, Estrons, Flamingods, The Heatwave, Lucy Spraggan and tons more. Since its inception in 2009, Tramlines Festival has carved a name for itself as one of the most genre-busting music festivals around. Always dealing in a mix of internationally acclaimed music legends as well as fresh and exciting up and comers, Tramlines takes a new format in 2017: the ninth edition will be an exclusively outdoor event, spanning three of Sheffield’s best park spaces thereby allowing the festival to bring its biggest lineup to date. The decision to tweak the format came in response to event organisers listening to feedback from its festival goers. Tramlines Festival Director Sarah

Nulty explains: “After each festival, we turn to our audience to find out what they’d like to see at the next event. The overwhelming feedback was that people wanted to see bigger acts on the Tramlines stages. By streamlining Tramlines to three outdoor spaces, it’s meant we could deliver something really special. Sheffield is often hailed as an 'Outdoor City', and has a ton of public parks, and a third of it sits within the glorious Peak District National Park. It is the UK's leading destination for people seeking outdoor adventure, and we are excited to present a large part of Tramlines 2017 as an outdoor event.” These spaces include the lush Ponderosa Park home to the Main Stage and the Into The Trees stage; Devonshire Green situated right in the heart of the city centre and home to Stage 2, and the woodland set-

ting of Endcliffe Park, home to the Folk Forest. Additionally for 2017, Tramlines has added the new Momentum Music Fund stage which will be held in the o2 Academy, and the Hallam Shuttle bus to transport people from Ponderosa Park to Endcliffe Park, including one-off performances and solo acts programmed and managed by Sheffield Hallam students. As for stage breakdowns, the Main Stage will see The Libertines, Twin Atlantic, Primal Scream, We Are Scientists, Toots & The Maytals, Metronomy, The House Gospel Choir, Lady Leshurr and more all play across the weekend, while Devonshire Green will host Kano, The Pharcyde, All Saints, The Coral, The Big Moon and more. The Folk Forest is then the place to catch Cate Le Bon, Blaenavon, Omar Souleyman, The Magic Gang and Goat Girl. Into The Trees, will feature The Reflex, a

SHEFFIELD NORTHERN GENERAL HOSPITAL’S HELIPAD CELEBRATES ITS FIRST ANNIVERSARY

which the hospital is able to receive and treat time critical patients and has undoubtedly saved lives I’d like to personally thank all of our supporters, without them this vital facility would not have been completed.

This month marks the first anniversary of the opening of Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital helipad, which was officially launched in 2016, after its first ever landing of a Yorkshire air ambulance helicopter. Since then, it has seen, on average, nearly three landings every week. Previously the hospital had a helipad that was 20 years old and because of its distance from the emergency department, patients had to finish their journey by road ambulance, delaying access to life saving treatment. Fifty per cent of the £2 million helipad was donated by the HELP Appeal, a national charity which relies entirely on public donations. The rest was funded by Sheffield Hospitals Charity, thanks to the generosity of local people and businesses supporting. The helipad currently serves 1.8 million people across Sheffield, South Yorkshire, parts of the Humber, Derbyshire and the East Midlands. In its first year, there has been 130 air ambulance landings, including patients who have been involved in vehicle incidents or sustained falls. David Reynolds, Director, Sheffield Hospitals Charity said: “The new helipad has made a huge difference to the way in

RECORD YEAR FOR CAST THEATRE Cast, Doncaster’s flagship theatre today announced it’s most successful year since opening selling 20% more tickets than the previous year. Although Cast boasts the lowest average ticket prices in South Yorkshire, ticket income is also up by 23%, a record-breaking result with over 90,000 people attending the theatre in the last 12 months. 2016/17 has been a record year for Doncaster’s theatre overall, with not only more tickets sold than ever before but 56 sell out shows, twice as many as the previous year, with record-breaking audiences for drama, classical music and dance. The bulk of Cast’s unprecedented growth in 2016/17 has come from the charity’s pantomime. An annual treat for families across the borough, last year’s Jack and the Beanstalk saw 24,000 local people through the doors. With over 6,000 seats already sold for this year’s family spectacular, the theatre looks on course to smash records again with Beauty and the Beast. September also saw crowds of over 3,500 attend a free explosive and thrilling evening spectacular, Clash of Drums in Doncaster town centre, many of which had never been to the theatre before. Hundreds of young performers from local groups including Let’s Act, New Youth Theatre, Nellie Stagles School of Theatre Dance and Star Stuck Academy performed on stage at Cast last year, and Cast has seen a growing audience for local talent, which now account for 25% of all tickets purchased. At the beginning of February, Doncaster’s leading amateur theatre company JKL Productions presented the world premiere of Heaven’s Walk, based upon the extraordinary true story of a Doncaster family in the First World War. Thanks to Cast’s ambitious fundraising

campaign Make your Mark, the charity has also seen the donations increase by 150%, which will go to supporting a range of charitable incentives including workshops for young people, free tickets and accessible services. Cast has experienced an influx of support in general, with membership enrolment doubling in size over the last 12 months. Cast members can access a range of benefits including discount at the Café Bar, invites to exclusive events and priority booking. Cast’s Director Deborah Rees comments: ‘I’m thrilled that record numbers are coming to watch world-class live performance in Doncaster, further cementing Cast as a leading destination for culture in the region. Success for a theatre is measured in many different ways; and so above the Box Office returns, what I’m especially proud of is the generosity of local people who support the charity to make worldclass arts provision available to everyone. In 2016/17 there were a swathe of theatregoers drawn to Doncaster for the first time, and it’s fantastic that Cast is making economic contribution to the borough as well as transforming the quality of life for local people. It goes to show that given the conditions to thrive, organisations like Cast are putting Doncaster on the map as an attractive place to visit, live and work.’

CLOSE PASS MAT FOR DRIVER EDUCATION TO MAKE DEBUT APPEARANCE IN SHEFFIELD The South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership (SYSRP) and CycleSheffield are joining forces to highlight the dangers of motorists driving too close to cyclists when overtaking. The specially designed mat indicates the safe distance at which drivers should pass cyclists. The Highway Code advises that drivers leave at least as much room as they would when overtaking a car. Cycling UK, who created the mat, suggest that 1.5 metres is the minimum clearance distance when passing someone on their bike. Cyclists, and drivers who have swapped their cars for their bikes for the event, will be able to see the mat – along with a police car in situ – and pick up

free cycle safety information and advice. “While we don’t believe motorists mean to overtake closely, we welcome the opportunity to highlight the issue, and how easy it is for drivers to give us cyclists extra space.” Joanne Wehrle, Safer Roads Manager for SYSRP, added: “Drivers and cyclists, and indeed all road users, have a responsibility for sharing the road with others. The close pass mat is a valuable tool for us to use when we are out and about at events, and as part of our driver training sessions. “We would encourage all drivers to keep an eye out for cyclists and to slow down and give them enough room when passing by – they may suddenly need to avoid uneven road surfaces or other obstacles. We have a wealth of advice and information for drivers and cyclists on the new SYSRP website at www. sysrp.co.uk.” Cycling UK raised £12,000 through crowdfunding to make close pass mats available to all police forces that want one for their own enforcement and education initiatives. SYSRP and South Yorkshire Police are investigating the possibility of implementing a close pass campaign on our county’s roads following the success of a similar scheme in the West Midlands.

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

I know I’ve written about it before, and I’ll probably do so again, but once more this week, I’ve been appalled by the behaviour of so called ‘anglers’ towards their brethren… I do take much of my earnings from social media, it’s a job, but sometimes, I resent having to read what others put up for perusal. Don’t get me wrong, I love reading some of my compatriot’s blogs, posts, and other comments, but some ‘anglers’ should take a very long, hard look in the mirror, and consider very carefully what they put in the public domain, and just what it achieves… I’d seen a few incendiary comments throughout the week, but the one which really got my goat was seeing a young angler catch the biggest fish in the lake, and post it for all to admire, but he made the ‘mistake’ of posting the weight of his prize. Oh dear. Within minutes, it started; so called ‘proper’ anglers questioning the weight, stating what it had come out at last time it was banked, criticising the way the fish was held, or adding comments which were clearly peevish. I could’ve chucked my laptop at the wall! Established anglers are constantly bemoaning the lack of youth coming into angling, but who can blame them? You can blame it on Pokemon, you can blame it on the Playstation Generation, but the fact is, if you criticise, without just cause, then you should shoulder some of the blame... I was talking to a young ex-angler the other day, and asked why he had given up. He told me that a lack of friendly advice hadn’t helped, explaining that if he asked a basic angling question (as we all have at some point) he was told not to bother going if he didn’t know what he was doing, or immediately ridiculed for not knowing in the first place; how on earth are the youngsters supposed to learn if they don’t ask? The social demographic has changed over

the years, and often as not, the parents are both working, without time or knowledge to spend on the bank with junior, so it’s down to the rest of us to help. There are many schemes to encourage new anglers admittedly, but not everyone has access to them, or feel that without any underpinning information, they may expose their perceived weaknesses, and some just cannot afford to attend, so the internet is often their prime source of understanding…and it’s sadly full of idiots who couldn’t offer polite advice if they tried! I run several social media pages, and see daily the comments posted by self-confessed ‘experts’ which are just clearly incorrect, untrue, or just downright unnecessary, and I despair. I really do agree with the old saying that if you have nothing nice to say, then say nothing… I imagine them sitting at home, unwashed in their bedsit, in front of their computer, their window on the world, readying themselves for a day of antagonistic commentary. No doubt sat in slightly yellowed underpants, surrounded by last night’s takeaway cartons, curtains drawn, trawling the web, wondering whether there will be an easy opportunity to get a reaction either by posting something outrageously amoral, or merely seeking to fester an argument with sarcasm, which is immediately excused as ‘banter’. It isn’t, it’s called being an arse, it’s downright bullying, and there is nothing to be gained by it, save a few seconds of smug satisfaction which you can enjoy on your own, because you probably have no proper friends, and no-one else listens to you… apart from your clique of like-minded brethren. Everyone else can see it’s pure jealousy, an envy of those who successfully enjoy their angling, and those posts say far more about the poster than the subject of their ire … They really should try going outside, talking to people about normal everyday things like the weather, or crisps, or flowers, or Welsh Rugby or something, and realise that what they do isn’t amusing, it isn’t helpful, and only exposes themselves to ridicule when others realise that the ‘banter’ says more about them, than their target… It’s the same with those who denigrate a ‘competitor’ product for no good reason; fine, you have your favourites, everyone else has theirs, so why not just keep quiet about

it, rather than try and destroy everyone else’s confidence or enjoyment of that product? Get a grip, either belt up, shut up, or be nice; it’s that simple, and the internet would be a far better place for it. We should all make the effort to explain, cajole, assist or help those coming into the sport (or even those who have experience, but seek advice) and share to encourage others. Can you imagine if every angler, every day, gave one piece of good, solid, advice? Everybody would learn something! It would be brilliant! I’ll concede that some anglers may need constructive comment to point out an error, but why not do it privately? Instead of upsetting or embarrassing someone, be polite, send a private message and explain why you think correction is in order? You might learn something too!

So there you have it, this week’s thoughts. If you have to post on social media, post something nice, something to encourage, something to inspire the young angler, the new angler, to become part of the brethren we enjoy. By the way, I do get the irony of asking you to post something pleasant when I’ve just had a rant, but put it down to ‘banter’ ‘eh?

Manager Paul Warne expects that new signing Josh Emmanuel will fit seamlessly into life with the Millers. Emmanuel is the second player to leave Ipswich Town to join the Millers on loan after Kieffer Moore signed at the start of last week. Both have signed season long loans with the Millers, with teenager Emmanuel already greatly impressing his new boss following discussions prior to the move. “He is a really good kid,” Warne told www.themillers.co.uk “He’s had a good upbringing, he is down to earth but really wants to improve his game. Andy Liddell at Ipswich and Kieffer have told me he

is a really good lad. He is a humble kid. He feels privileged that he was born with an ability to do something he enjoys doing. He wants his career to go all he way to the top, which at 19 why shouldn’t it. If he comes here and has an amazing season with us then he will no doubt go on to bigger and better things.” Like Moore, Warne confirmed that he was impressed with the London-born right-back after he played for the Tractor Boys against the Millers at the end of last season. After starting his youth career with West Ham, the 19-year-old signed for Ipswich in 2015 and played 17 times in all competitions during the last campaign. Now Warne expects him to kick on again, revealing that he is flying out to Austria where he could play in Saturday’s game with Soproni VSE. “He played against us at the end of the season and I thought he did well,” Warne added. “He is a dynamic, strong athlete who gets up and down the pitch. I’ve seen him play a few times, I’ve spoken to Lidds, and obviously Mick McCarthy, and I know they like him. “He’s signed a new deal at Ipswich, he’s only 19 so it looks like he has a good career ahead of him. He is a really humble kid. I spoke to him on the phone and he’s a really polite lad. I’ve said it a number of times that I feel better human beings make better footballers, and they are the people I am bringing in. “I don’t want to have loads and loads of loans, Josh and Kieffer will be my two loans for the moment. I have a good group of players, and I have two in every position which I am really happy with. There is good competition for places and they are all really fighting for a jersey.”

Other club colleagues will also be in attendance to talk with fans and answer any questions. Bramall Lane’s Platinum Suite doors will open at 6.30pm with the dignitaries taking to the stage at 7pm. Tickets for the event are free of charge, but there is a maximum of 300 available. They must be collected in person from the Sheffield United Ticket Office or over phone at 0114 253 7200, please note that there will be no postal or online applications for this event. BROOKS READY TO STEP UP WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH

The Ricky Holmes saga began in 2016, upon Chris Wilder’s appointment at the Lane. The former-Northampton player decided to head south to Charlton, instead of following his former manager. The pursuit continued following United’s promotion and Charlton’s mid-table finish. However, despite a transfer drama to rival Dan Burn’s suggested move to the Lane, Holmes opted to sign a new deal at the Valley. This will have undoubtedly been a huge disappointment to Wilder and his staff, but a replacement for Holmes could be within touching distance, that being Blades youngster David Brooks. The 20-year-old had a spellbinding summer, which included being named the player of the tournament at the Toulon Tournament. He looked set to join Chesterfield on loan, but a series of good performances and the failure to acquire Holmes has given the midfielder an opening in the first team. His preseason outings so far have been promising, two goals against Stocksbridge Park Steels acting as a reminder to the management staff that Brooks is capable of mixing it with the first XI. Everton, a club who have become notorious for hoovering up young talent in recent years, have reportedly shown an interest in Brooks. It’s unlikely that the player will head off to the Premier League just yet, especially with the carrot of Championship playing time dangling in the distance. United must be careful not to be drawn into a repeat of the Holmes pursuit with Southend’s Ryan Leonard, particularly with options available in the academy. Leonard is reported to have put in a transfer request, only to withdraw it days later. United would be wise to avoid drawn out negotiations, the Championship curtain raiser against Brentford draws ever closer.

Darren Ferguson was impressed with youngster Tyler Walker as he provided another assist in Rovers’ 2-0 win over Tadcaster Albion at the i2i Stadium on last weekend. Walker’s cross was volleyed home by Gary McSheffrey before Liam Mandeville’s penalty gave the visitors their second pre-season victory, as the side continue their preparations for the upcoming Sky Bet League One season. “I have been pleased with him, he has improved in the last two games and I have seen a lot of quality from him, he has set up two goals so it is always pleasing,” he said. “He has got a lot of things to work on but the quality of his two crosses for the two goals have been very good, he needs to get fitter obviously playing in that position, but he has done no harm that’s for sure. “We got through the game very very well and the fitness is good, another 45 minutes for everyone as well in a game that we knew would be more difficult than the last time out.” The cheapest way to watch Rovers during the 2017/18 campaign is with a Silver Membership.
