CAST RECEIVES £60,000 AWARD FROM PAUL HAMLYN FOUNDATION TO WELCOME THE HARDEST TO REACH One of the UK’s largest independent grant-giving organisations Paul Hamlyn Foundation is to give £60,000 to Cast, Doncaster’s ﬂagship theatre from its Arts Access and Participation fund ‘Explore and Test’.

‘Explore and Test’ grants are designed to support organisations to test, pilot and evaluate new approaches and their potential to make a difference. The award covers a period of two years and will support

Cast to explore a more sustained approach to learn about the complex barriers which prevent people from disadvantaged groups from accessing the theatre. Cast aims to work collaboratively with users from ﬁve community groups in Doncaster. Groups already recruited for the programme include Doncaster Conversation Club who support local refugees and asylum seekers, women’s charity Changing Lives, DMBC’s family scheme Aiming High and darts’ Creative Directions programme for people

experiencing mental health issues. The initiative, called Social Seats, will see over 800 tickets made available throughout the two years, along with additional support activities including workshops, food provision, childcare and post-show discussions. The charity hopes the project will successfully build on existing learning and create sustainable, long-term relationships that encourage the hardest to reach audiences to attend independently. Deborah Rees, Director for Cast comments: ‘Everyone has the right

to access life changing arts experiences that improve their quality of life. As a result of this grant we’re really excited to discover how we can make this a reality in Doncaster. Cast’s mission as a charity is all about equality, giving everyone the same chance to access the arts. This theatre is for everyone but in many cases, there’s too much standing in the way. Thanks to the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, Social Seats aims to tackle those big barriers head on - everything from low conﬁdence, childcare, cultural

barriers and the cost of the tickets. Over the next two years 800 local people will pass through Cast’s doors with this scheme and we can’t wait to welcome them.’ Commenting on the award, Moira Sinclair,

THE NATIONAL COAL MINING MUSEUM ANNOUNCES A ‘SMASHING SUMMER’ AT T’PIT A ‘Smashing Summer’ is on offer for visitors to the National Coal Mining Museum in Wakeﬁeld. The Museum is already well known for its unique Underground Tours of Caphouse Colliery – the only place in England where the public can visit a real coalmine. During 2017 the Museum has also been welcoming visitors to enjoy a varied programme of original events and special exhibition commemorating 70 years since the Nationalisation of the coal industry. From 1st August the Museum is delighted to welcome visitors to its brand new Adventure Playground which has been several months in the making. The site next to the Museum has been extended and landscaped and now includes a range of exciting new activities with pride of place being given to a Zip Wire which has been constructed to look like a pithead wheel. Members of the University Medics’ Orchestra presented two concerts in support of the charity that provides vital interactive musical experiences for people living with dementia in care homes and day centres across the region and nationally. And together the Christmas Concert at the University’s Firth Hall and a Spring performance at St Mark’s Church in Broomhill raised a final total of £2,341.93. “As a charity doing so much work in the field of dementia care, we could really see the synergy between young trainee medics and the work we do using music to help transform

MORE PHOENIX LIKE, NOT PHOENIX NIGHTS So the media tell us on an almost daily basis that pubs and clubs are failing. That the traditions of the working men’s club are a thing of the past and that the industry has moved on from what was the back bone of live entertainment. In 2014 Crookes Social Club in Sheffield looked very much like it would become just another statistic. The club was in dire financial difficulty, was experiencing dropping membership and was in desperate need of life support to survive. This life support came in the form of new bar manager Maurice Champeau. Maurice had no previous “Club Land” experience but had an enviable reputation for rescuing pubs and restaurants across the country from the edge of failure. Maurice spent the initial few months assessing the business opportunity available at Crookes Social and then with the backing and the commitment of the committee started implementing a programme of changes. Maurice said “My philosophy is very simple. If it’s not earning money why are we doing it?” The club had historically been run with far too many

similarities to Brian Potter of Phoenix Nights. With poorly informed business decisions. “I think my lack of history in the club trade was an advantage. I did not approach any business decision with any preconceived ideas of what could and could not be done.” Said Maurice In the last financial year, the club was able to report an operating profit for the first time in many years. The club is busier week on week and members are beginning to see the fruits of this increased turnover with all public areas now being refurbished and the club generally having a busier vibe. In an effort to continue

this success Crookes Club is now opening its doors to new and lapsed members. Anyone who has membership to any other CIU affiliated club in the area, or who’s membership to Crookes club has expired are being invited to join Crookes Club for the remainder of 2017 free of charge. Not only do members enjoy the benefits of reduced priced drinks but also are eligible to win the members only bingo jackpots. LOCAL CHILDREN TREAD THE BOARDS IN SHEFFIELD All the months of hard work and preparation ﬁnally came to fruition last weekend as the children and young people of Shefﬁeld put on a show to remember. Performed at The Octagon Centre, the young cast all attend

part time theatre school Razzamataz Shefﬁeld and have been rehearsing for the show for the last few months. The whole school were involved in ‘I Believe’, from the youngest mini age 4 through to senior students aged 18. The annual performance

gives students a chance to demonstrate what they learn each week in classes and shows off the whole Razzamataz Curriculum that features traditional West End musical theatre through to pop singing, street dance and acting for stage and screen. The show was a chance for students to demonstrate just how much they have achieved and the Principal wanted to give all the children a chance to shine and show off the skills they have been learning each week during the dance, drama and singing classes. “I’m so proud of each and every student,” explains Helen, Principal of Razzamataz Shefﬁeld. “Throughout the rehearsals and during the show, their behaviour was impeccable and they showed a real sense of maturity both on and off the stage.” The cast treated

the audience to a performance where there was really something for everyone to enjoy. Based on the students dreams and aspirations for their future, the whole show pulled together a variety of West End musical theatre alongside pop singing, street dance and drama. Some of the key moments in the show included our 4-5 year olds dressed up in little black suits for their Men in Black number which contrasted with older students singing beautiful three part harmony to well known songs such as Circle of Life from The Lion King. “Parents, family and friends were really impressed with the students and many couldn’t believe the change in conﬁdence in their children,” explains Helen. “It takes a lot of courage to go on stage and the whole process of putting on

a show teaches young people such wonderful life skills from coping with nerves, working to a deadline, being humble and learning to take criticism with an open mind through to collaborating with a whole crew of people.” One Mum in particularly, Sharon, said “I just wanted to thank you and all your team for the fantastic show on Sunday. It was so lovely to see Chloe perform in front of so many people, I was really impressed. You could see all the hard work from both ends that went into it and see the conﬁdence in Chloe and enjoyment, which was worth its weight in gold. So thank you to everyone at Razzamataz.” The showcase has given students a real taste for being on stage and there are many more opportunities planned including the Shefﬁeld Christmas Light

I make no apologies this week for writing about the same venue for a couple of weeks on the trot… The fact is, that although I’ve been fishing for many years, and seen many venues, I get bored easily, but for some reason, this place, an East Cheshire still water, has really has got under my skin… It could be the quality of fish therein, or it could be the people, or it could just be because it’s so beautiful, surrounded by mature woodland, full of wildlife, and peaceful… for whatever reason, I’m hooked, so went again this week, hoping for one of the (very) elusive carp… For my first visit, I selected the very end peg, halfway down the lake (it’s restricted fishing) giving access to oodles of open water, and a popular island feature. I hedged my bets somewhat, resisting the temptation to go all out for carp (and risk a resounding blank) so set up two rods to target both carp, and tench or bream. The island is a good eighty yards away, so requires a little more ‘grunt’ than can be achieved with my 1.5lb test curve Sonik S3 Specialist rod when trying to fire a hefty load, so I opted to take the SK3 XTR with me, boasting a 3lb test curve, which easily deposits my bait at that range, which would be rigged for bigger fish. A simple ‘Roddie’ (or ‘Chonnie’, depending on your level of ‘carpiness’) was slipped onto a heavyweight leader, secured between two beads, and fired out to the margins of the distant island with a small pop up attached. Perfectly cast, it dropped between some overhanging bushes, and was left to settle… The other rig, on which I expected more of the action, was a small method feeder, wrapped

in groundbait, with a handful of milled pellet (new, from www.sppottedfin.com) and some 2mm Betafin pellets added. Banded onto the hook, the usual 8mm Spotted Fin Catalyst wafter, and I swung it out to about 50 yards, at the base of a sandbar which crossed my front. Within about thirty minutes, the method feeder bobbin indicated interest, and after a few seconds of twitching, it rose to the rod, and the first tench of the day was hooked. A fish of over 4lb was duly returned, a typical fish from the venue, and in pristine condition, followed ten minutes later by another of similar proportions; a good start. As I returned the second fish, the bobbin on the ‘carp’ rod shot up without warning, and line spilled forward off the spool; could it be my first venue carp? I’ll never know, because although I swept the rod high into the air, and frantically wound down towards the fish, impossibly, I didn’t connect! Gutted! After a few expletives, both rods were returned to their respective spots, and throughout the day, a number of quality tench, and a couple of hefty bream, fell to my baits on both rods. I could see carp, out of range at well over 160 yards, but couldn’t entice one any nearer… they’re wily things these old estate lake fish, so as the swim went quiet late in the day, I packed up ready to return later in the week… I’d had another good day, with plenty of tench and bream, but no carp… Returning later in the week, I opted for a popular swim at the other end of the lake, which put me within range of far bank reed cover. Both rods were set up in exactly the same way, one pitched into an open water bay where I’d noted two carp roll, and the other, the method feeder, dropped in a rod length off the far reed line. I knew both baits would land on silt, so the 3oz lead had been changed for one of 2oz, and I’d moved the beads up to prevent the bait being pulled into the mire. Again, the method feeder provided almost instant action, a plump tench slipping up within a few minutes, and again, it was followed by a second a short time later; the carp rod bobbin however, remained motionless… I sat beneath the brolly, watching the rain slant across the lake as conditions deteriorated, and thought back to the moment I’d got out of the van in the early hours

to be approached by Marc, an angler who has apparently been keeping abreast of my captures on this tricky venue. “Are you Clint?” I cautiously replied that I was, expecting a punch at any time (you never know) and extended my hand. It was taken, and shaken warmly, as Marc introduced himself, kindly complimented me on my previous captures, and, after some small talk he asked the question I knew was coming; “What peg are you going on?” I knew Marc wanted the same peg I did, especially if he had been reading about my captures, so I knew I was going to disappoint him when I told him, for I was there first. I therefore suggested that he might like to drop in next door so we could share some ideas as we attempted to snare a few fish, but he graciously declined, (appreciated) so I insisted… I’m glad I did… Marc proved to be fantastic company, an absolute gentleman, with a similar outlook on life to myself (you should seek help Marc) and I did indeed pick up some good ideas, and a wealth of information about gadgets and other things to assist with my work. We also talked almost non-stop about family, jobs, money, holidays, and of course, fishing, and I enjoyed those few hours immensely as between us, we caught a few tench, and Marc picked up a nice roach too, before he had to leave, to prepare for his forthcoming holiday. After Marc departed, the weather got even worse, rain swirling under the brolly, dripping heavily from the trees above, and the wind was driving the weather into every crevice. No matter how hard I held the brolly, or how far I pulled it down, it was time to leave, before I ended up drowning! Although I still haven’t managed to tempt a carp from the venue yet, I did trip up another nine, fine tench during a half day session, all chubby fish of over 4lb, and yet again, I’ve taken something from the venue in the form of another session worth

of experience, and a new mate with whom to share information; that surely must be what is known as a ‘win, win’ visit? I think so, and it’s just a couple of reasons I’ll be back again soon, after all, it’s not always about the ﬁsh, is it? Tight lines…

MORE CONCENTRATION AND FOCUS - CARLOS Wednesday may have seen their unbeaten preseason run come to an end on Sunday but Carlos Carvalhal believes the result can help his side’s preparations this week. The Owls begin their 2017/18 Championship campaign at Preston on Saturday. Leading up to the curtain-raiser on 5 August, Wednesday rounded off their pre-season with a 2-0 defeat to Rangers at Hillsborough. Carlos told swfc.co.uk: “Sometimes in friendly games it can be good to lose one game because nobody likes to lose, I don’t like to lose. “But you take a big lesson, you put your feet on the ﬂoor and you look to the things with more concentration, more focus. “You can win all your games in pre-season and after you can lose your concentration. “Let’s see if I am correct or not on Saturday. Sometimes in the preparation, one of the enemies of the coaches is victories. “When you win all the games, you can think everything is correct, the players can think everything is correct.

“When you lose one game, everybody is very alert on what you must do to win the next game.” The head coach saw positives in the Owls’ second half display against the SPL outﬁt as he added: “We gave good signals in the second half and we must take that and upgrade what we did in this period of the game. “During the time that we started pre-season, I have never spoken about the importance of the score when we have won of drawn. “Whether you win or lose, you must upgrade the team. It’s good these kind of games can happen in pre-season and not in the Championship, of course.”

POSITIVES AND ALCOCK NEGATIVES FIGHTING FIT Positives and negatives – that was the verdict of Carlos Carvalhal following the 2-0 defeat to Rangers at Hillsborough. Goals either side of half time from Josh Windass and Kenny Miller secured victory for the Scottish giants. Carvalhal said: “There were some positives and there were some negatives today. “On the positive side, I thought we played very well in the second half, much like I expected. “In the first half we were milky, we did not play very well, this was not the brand of Sheffield Wednesday. “Rangers were better than us so we had to improve for the second half and we did. “We were unlucky not to score in my opinion.” On the fitness front, Carvalhal issued updates on a string of players in his post-match media conference: “Keiren Westwood had to come off but I think he is fine, I have just seen him and he is okay. “Kieran Lee did not play today but he has trained okay and he will feature in a friendly game we have at our facility against Lincoln. “We will also give some playing time to those players who did not feature today. “We will mix some senior players with the Under23s. “Sam Hutchinson felt some pain in his stomach so he was not available and Liam Palmer felt a little pain in his Achilles.”

Defender Craig Alcock was happy to complete 90 minutes as 10-man Rovers tasted defeat to Sky Bet League Two side Chesterfield at the Proact Stadium. The former Sheffield United man was side-lined in early weeks of Rovers’ pre-season after suffering an ankle injury and Alcock was also impressed with some individual performances despite the loss. “It was always going to be difficult after Alfie got sent off but those types of games you have to get what you can, fitness wise it was big for me as I’m coming back from injury,” he said. “I needed the 90 minutes personally and for me that is the big thing to take from the game, but there were some impressive individual performances in amongst it and it was good to see the young lads have a run out. “We had to make sure that we got something out of it after the red card but it was tough and it ends preseason on a bit of a sour note to be honest.” Rovers kick off their 2017/18 Sky Bet League One campaign at home to Gillingham and Alcock is looking forward to getting started and calls for his team mates to fear no one. “It’s going to be an exciting season for us, we have to go into it with no fear and we are coming into League One after a really good season last year,” he said. “The last part of last season has been and gone for us now, we move forward now and we have to make sure that we establish this football club where it should be. “We achieved our objective in terms of going straight back up which a lot of teams don’t always do, you only have to look at Plymouth and Portsmouth, who have taken a few seasons to do it, so we have to take positives from that.”
