sheffield to honour vc hero arnold Sheffield will remember the last of its Victoria Cross recipients, whose acts of heroism saved hundreds of lives during the First World War, exactly 100 years to the day when he carried out his first acts of bravery. A commemorative plaque will be laid in honour of Sergeant Arnold Loosemore at the cenotaph in Barker’s Pool on Friday 11 August 2017 at 12.30 pm. All are welcome to attend. Sergeant Loosemore, who was in the 8th Battalion Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding) Regiment (Sheffield), was decorated for gallantry twice during the First World War. His acts of heroism on 11 August 1917 saw him awarded the Victoria Cross for conspicuous bravery and initiative in the face of the enemy, the highest

and most prestigious award for gallantry that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. His platoon was under heavy machine gun fire when Arnold, then a private, crawled through partially cut wire, dragging his Lewis gun with him, and singlehandedly dealt with a strong party of the enemy, killing about 20 of them. On 13 October 1918, just 23 days before Armistice, Arnold was badly wounded by machine gun fire in France with injuries needing the amputation of his left leg above the knee. Arnold Loosemore will have a commemorative plaque placed at the Sheffield Cenotaph on Friday. After the war Arnold return to Sheffield, married his childhood sweetheart

Amy Morton and thad a son named Arnold. Following several years of ill-health and pain, Arnold died at home from tuberculosis in 1924 aged just 27. Many of his surviving family will be in attendance on Friday. Councillor Jack Scott, ward councillor for Arbourthorne, whose constituency covers Gleadless where Arnold Loosemore has a housing estate named after him, said: “This soldier was a true Sheffielder and war hero. “He wasn’t especially well treated during his lifetime and we are delighted to be making amends in this way. I hope as many people as possible can attend during their lunch hour or with their own families to recognise a true Sheffield hero and mark his heroic contribution to our years of peace.” Arnold was

one of seven Loosemore brothers from Sheffield to serve in the First World War Sgt Loosemore is the third Sheffielder to be honoured in this way. Major William Barnsley Allen and Sgt Maj John Raynes have also been honoured with plaques. The Right Worshipful Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Cllr Anne Murphy, said: “We have recently marked the anniversary of the battle of Passchendaele and

Friday’s service shows the importance of the gallantry displayed by so many Sheffielders in this terrible conflict. It will be an absolute honour to stand alongside his family to make a permanent memorial to his valour, in the city centre. I invite all citizens of Sheffield to join me in commemorating Sgt Loosemore, one of Sheffield’s bravest sons of the First World War.”

ALBERT SNODGRASS

Me and 146 mates broke the world record for the most people standing in a diagonal line last week. We were all staggered. There was a lovely mirror behind the counter at my local shop. I can see myself buying it. I hate my Scottish grandfather: for Christmas he was supposed to get me a Wii U, instead he got me a miniature sheep. “Why do you always treat me like a kid?” I asked my wife. “Good question,” she said, “but next time raise your hand before you ask me a question.” I saw a poster that said, “Breathing air in metropolitan areas can reduce your life expectancy by 2-3 years”. I would imagine that not breathing air would reduce it considerably more.

thousands may be let down by funeral plans A study completed in September 2016 warns that thousands of people could be let down by poor funeral plans they don’t understand. Consumer group Fairer Finance said people who paid for their funerals in advance could find their relatives faced extra costs after they died. It also accused the industry of high-pressure sales tactics with vulnerable consumers, and claimed there was a danger of some firms collapsing. The funeral industry itself said it was already campaigning for change. The Fairer Finance study called for proper regulation of funeral plans, suggesting that the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) should play a role. The report was commissioned by Dignity, one of the biggest providers. It said the scale of unscrupulous sales practices in the market was significant and growing. However it also says that buying a funeral plan from a reputable provider can provide good value for money, as it locks in current prices. Shortfalls The average cost of a pre-paid funeral plan is about £4,000, according to the report. But many plans do not cover costs such as embalming, limousines, a funeral service, a wake, burial plots or memorial stones. In some cases, families are left having to find an extra £2,000, even though they expect such items to be included. Many customers buying

such plans are elderly or vulnerable, and will not be around to check whether the product met their expectations. ‘High pressure’ sales As many as 1.2 million people in the UK have pre-payment plans, and the industry is growing fast - up by 350% over the last 10 years. Sales representatives have targeted at least six million adults over the age of 50, using what the report describes as “high-pressure” techniques. Some people have been subject to aggressive telephone marketing or in-home visits, it claimed. In a telephone survey, nearly half of those contacted by sales reps said they felt as if they had been “pushed” to buy a plan. In some instances, funeral plan firms pay commissions and fees of up to £1,000 for each policy sold - around a quarter of the total plan cost. The report also said there was very little transparency over what happens to clients’ money after they had paid it. Regulation The National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD) said it had been campaigning for tighter rules since November last year. “In our view, the current lack of comprehensive oversight is allowing sharp sales practices and a lack of transparency to flourish in parts of the market,” said Alison Crake, president of the NAFD. “Members have reported numerous

instances to us where funeral plan providers have not acted in the best interests of either the public who have paid for funeral plans, or the funeral directors who will care for them.” Tips when paying for a funeral in advance • Tell your family about a funeral plan, or other financial plans to pay the costs on death • Ask questions so you and your family fully understand what is paid for and what is not covered • Keep the paperwork with other important documents so it is easy for your family to find • Do not pay for a funeral plan in cash as there is less of a record of payment • When moving house, inform your funeral plan provider. The cost may be different in the area you move to. The industry is currently subject only to voluntary regulation, by the Funeral Planning Authority (FPA), and there is no ombudsman service for consumers to complain to. However, the report argues that funeral plans are financial products and should therefore be regulated by the FCA. Reviews of the industry have been chequered in the past. Open-ended over-50s plans have seen some people pay more than they need to during a long life. Other plans have been criticised for hidden costs or a lack of clarity over what is covered..

national emergency services museum

Come face to face with some of the most amazing vehicles and exhibits around! Feel as if you’re in the thick of the action and adventure, with the sights and sounds of the National Emergency Services Museum. The Museum is the LARGEST mainly volunteer run Museum of it’s kind in the UK and relies on sponsors, donations and money from the door/Gift Shop and Coffee Shop. If YOU think you could help us in any way possible please contact us at the Museum The building, which had stood derelict for many years, was acquired in 1984 and was set up as The South Yorkshire Fire Service Historical Society. Firefighters from the South Yorkshire Brigade began to refurbish the Victorian Police and Fire Station so that a permanent home would be found for the vast range of fire service related memorabilia that was sitting in attics and local fire stations all over the county. By August 1986 the museum was ready to open it’s doors. Though much work has been done, there is still a tremendous amount to be done to restore all the rooms to full use. Incidentally, the first job ever tackled was the eviction of squatters in the shape of a flock of pigeons. The museum is open every Wednesday to Sunday in School term time from 10:00 to 16:00 with last entry at 15:00. During School holidays the museum is open 7 days a week from 10:00 to 16:00. (Please note that school holidays are based on Sheffield).

Give In To Sweet Temptations! After several years of working from home, Sweet Temptation Cakes owner Nikkie French has been joined by her professional Wedding Photographer husband Trevor and her mum at their delightful new premises. Nikkie has built an enviable reputation for designing wedding and celebration cakes, which are so original that they can be described as edible works of art. One of many comments on Nikkie’s Facebook page reads – I had the pleasure of Nikkie making my wedding cake. Both myself and my husband loved the cake as did our guests. We also

kept the top tier for us as it was my husbands favourite however we forgot to eat it before we went on honeymoon for 2 weeks. When we returned we took it from the fridge and cut it ... this cake still tasted as amazing then as the day of our wedding. I cannot recommend her cakes more? I’ve had a number of them before my wedding cake and will continue to do so for the future. We had 4 tiers and by the end of the night there were less than a dozen slices of cake left, people asked me if they could have seconds which I happily allowed. Roll on my next order! Trevor has many years experience as a wedding photographer and Nikkie’s mum creates an excellent and varied range of wedding favours, so if you are planning your big day it makes great sense to give Nikkie a call. Or better still, why not visit and find out more about their excellent value packages and see some examples of Nikkie’s artistry.

MEADOWHALL HELPS SHINE A LIGHT ON SPECIAL OLYMPICS TORCH RUN Meadowhall enjoyed a new “elevated” status as part of the Special Olympics GB Torch Run which wound its way through the Centre’s malls and up the main escalator on August 8th. The “Guardian of the Flame” honour went to PC Leo Hawker from South Yorkshire Police who ran into Meadowhall via The Arcade with SOGB gymnasts Mary Nolan and Jessica Ward, the torch held aloft to cheering crowds of shoppers and retailers. He ended this particular leg with a well-earned but short rest on the Centre’s central escalator, taking him up and down the main dome area where he was finally greeted by a delegation of VIPs and SOGB board members. The flame then continued on its journey towards Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane stadium where the official opening ceremony will take place and mark the start of four days of events across the city. Meadowhall is one of the main sponsors at this year’s summer games with Centre Director Darren Pearce explaining: “It has been great to see the build up to these special games over the weeks and to get the torch to come into the Centre and be seen by so many people here was brilliant – a first for us and the Torch bearer! Sheffield is certainly no stranger to hosting large sporting events and I’m sure the city will welcome, watch and cheer the many athletes as they strive for gold this week.” Held every four years, the flagship Special Olympics GB National Summer Games is the country’s largest sports event for athletes with intellectual (learning) disabilities.

Angler’s Corner

with Clint Walker

Due to a combination of circumstances, I’ve been able to get out just once this week, and chose to visit Gawsworth Fisheries, near Macclesfield, in Cheshire, in search of carp. I like Gawsworth, there is much to attract the pleasure angler, and as usual, I fancied a crack at Wood Pool, where carp run to around 27lb, and catfish go even bigger! I intended to use a three rod attack, two for carp, one a sleeper rod in the hope of a bonus catfish, so set off ready for the 6am opening. On arrival, I was absolutely stunned to find that I was the only angler there! It is almost unheard of for the venue to be completely empty, a rare treat, and really put my plans in turmoil; I’d considered fishing the far end of the lake, away from any angling pressure, in the hope that fish would have been pushed down that end by noise from elsewhere, but as it was just me, there wasn’t much chance of that! Loading the barrow, I skipped across the adjoining field in happy anticipation, ready for a day on the bank. I’d got a new bivvy, the Sonik Sports SKS 1 man, to review, and conditions looked as if they would test it well, with rain forecast later, so I was looking forward to a good day. I stopped at the lake side, and watched the water in an effort to spot any giveaways… I checked out the far end, my principle target area, but saw nothing apart from a few roach dimpling the surface. By the island, a few ripples ringing from beneath overhanging trees caught my eye, especially as I noted some ‘bubblers’ nearby, and as the wind was pushing hard into this side of the lake, I thought it wise to set up camp. The bivvy was up first, pleasingly, in just a couple of minutes, and

everything else was placed inside to keep out of the rain which had started to spot down. Three rods, three rigs. The first, a ‘Chonnie’, a new rig I’m experimenting with, the second a ‘Ronnie’ rig, and the third a coated braid rig, with a couple of inches stripped back, to fish a big lump of meat in the margins, hoping for a cat attack! The two ‘Onnies’ were cast out, one to the island, squeezed beneath an overhanging tree, the second just off the island, onto a patch baited with Spotted Fin Catalyst boilies, and the meat was just dropped along the margin. I topped up the meat rig with a good amount of pellet, dead maggot, and stinky groundbait, reckoning that an abundance of small fish in the swim would attract a catfish! Amazingly, within a few minutes, the bobbin keeping watch over the meat rig gave a twitch, then rattled up towards the butt rig; I stared in awe, thinking my tactics were genius, and lifted the rod to feel nought but a flutter on the end… it was a roach, all 7ozs of it, squarely impaled on a size 4 hook, from which dangled a three inch cube of Spam! Ambitious! The rig was re-laid, but it continued to attract the attention of roach, so was withdrawn from service, and replaced with a zig rig, as I’d spotted carp in the upper layers. If ever there is a rig in which I have absolutely no confidence, then it’s the zig rig, and after a few fruitless hours, it continues to be so. I just can’t get on with it, and have overthought the mechanics I think, resulting in rarely trying it. I once fished the main lake at Alton Towers, the one in the shadow of the castle, for a magazine feature. We had been catching steadily, when I experienced a blank hour, so sneaked up to investigate my rig which lay in the edge, by the bridge, to see what the issue was… Attached to the hook, was a common of around 20lb, and as I watched, it became apparent that the fish was trying discharge the hook by rubbing the hook link against a tree branch, without moving the lead at all! My rig was approximately eight inches in length, giving the fish a sixteen inch circumference in which to move, without registering so much as a solitary bleep at the other end! It was only when the lead moved, that indication was given, and the rod could be lifted to connect; it’s a lesson I’ve never forgotten though, predominantly when using a semi-fixed rig,

and when applied to a five foot long zig rig, thus equating to a ten feet circle in which the fish can move without shifting the lead, I really do fail to see how it can be effective? How many anglers have been ‘done’ before they get a positive take? I know some will say it’s a super method, and I fully respect that, but it’s just not ‘clicked’ with me yet…sorry about that… The ‘Onnies’ on the other hand, were perfectly positioned, and as the rain started to slant across the fishery, I got my first ‘carpy’ run. A proper spool spinner, it came off the baited patch, on a pop up Catalyst bait, and resulted in a low double being played to the net in the pouring rain. After a quiet period however, I decided on change; the pop up rig was swapped for a simple coated braid rig, and I threaded a Catalyst freezer bottom bait onto the hair, which was slung back out, and a scattering of additional boilies applied. An hour later, another low double hit the net, followed by another an hour after that, with all three runs on the same rod over the baited patch. I lost the next two fish, both good ones, after they scrambled into bankside lilies, but successfully banked the fourth, again a double figure fish, as the rain continued to sheet down, and rumbles of thunder started to be heard. I’m not a fan of fishing in thunder, believing common sense to be much better than misguided valour, so quickly broke down the bivvy and charged (waddled) back up the field with the barrow full, as the flashes of lightening started to pursue me. The weather had been foul all day, save for odd periods of brightness, but the bivvy had worked as expected, and I’d managed (except when playing fish) to stay dry. I’d had a total of six proper carp runs, landing four, and a series of overly ambitious roach, Surprisingly, all runs had been on the same rod, from a spot I know well, and have often caught before; I had

nothing on the zig rig, which sat just on the surface (indeed, I even watched a carp mouth the bait without any signs of a bleeping alarm) and nothing on the other rod despite perfect location, so I can think that the rig doesn’t work as well as I’d hoped. I admit to being a little perplexed by that, but if I knew all the answers, then it wouldn’t be any fun would it?

no joy at the seaside for sorry millers ROTHERHAM United tasted defeat in their Sky Bet League One opener to Fleetwood Town, as Conor McAleny’s double saw Paul Warne’s men return home from Lancashire empty-handed. The close season signing from Everton proved the Millers’ tormentor-on-chief with goals either side of the interval after club skipper Lee Frecklington had a goal disallowed for offside early in the game. The Millers handed four competitive debuts to their summer signings with Ipswich loanee Josh Emmanuel and ex-Tranmere defender Michael Ihiekwe lining-up in the visitors defence. There was a new look to the Millers strike force with David Ball and Jamie Proctor being named against their former club, following their fine scoring form in the Millers pre-season campaign. The home side had a nervy start when firstly former Millers ‘keeper Alex Cairns spilled a left-wing cross but gathered at the second attempt before Fleetwood stalwart Nathan Pond was forced to cut out Proctor’s inviting through ball with Ball poised to race clear. Moments later, McAleny blasted a long-range effort harmlessly over for the hosts before Jon Taylor’s outswinging corner was met by the head of Joe

Mattock, who nodded goalwards but his effort was blocked en-route to goal. A lovely control, spin and pass from Proctor put Taylor in the clear but his cross was diverted to safety by Amari’i Bell before Rotherham had a goal chalked off on 13 minutes when a quick thinking corner routine paved the way for Will Vaulks to strike goalwards from the edge of the box before Frecklington stuck out a leg to divert the ball into the heart of the home goal but any Rotherham joy turned to despair- following a late flag from the assistant referee. The moment proved crucial when Fleetwood opened the scoring on 16 minutes when Bobby Grant managed to dig out a cross from the right-flank and McAleny nipped infront of his marker, on the six-yard box, to poke the ball past Richard O’Donnell and into the Rotherham net. Just past the half hour mark, Grant dragged a shot wide from long-range before Fleetwood came within a coat of paint of doubling their lead when Cian Bolger’s slide-rule pass left the visitors’ defence waiting for an offside flag that never came and Jordy Hiwula bared down on O’Donnell, to strike an effort which the Rotherham stopper superbly managed to divert onto the post before

Kyle Dempsey struck a rasping effort, in the next phase of play, which stung the palms of O’Donnell, who parried the ball to safety. Approaching the half-time break, Vaulks became the first to see yellow for a culmination of fouls in the first period before Grant blazed over, with the goal at his mercy, in the last action of note, after McAleny had got the better of Emmanuel in the build-up. The Millers were quick out of the blocks in the second half and Proctor turned smartly to fire a long-range effort which failed to trouble the home goal before Taylor’s deep centre was plucked out of the sky by Cairns. Minutes later, Vaulks tried his luck from distance and his effort seemed to strike the on-rushing Pond, which saw the ball bounce awkwardly in the path of Cairns, who parried the ball to safety, at full stretch. Just before the hour mark, Mattock injected pace into a move to give Ball, a rare glimpse of goal, but his curling effort was comfortably gathered by a backtracking Cairns. Minutes later, the Millers were indebted to Ihiekwe for sticking out a timely leg following a quick home counter attack but the visitors failed to heed the warning, as Fleetwood doubled their lead on 66 minutes when

the ball was played to McAleny, who teased and tormented his marker, on the edge of box, before drilling a low effort which caught out O’Donnell at his near post. In the next home attack, Bell floated a cross-cum-shot which had O’Donnell backtracking nervously as it hit the roof of the visitors net before sub Kieffer Moore made an instant impact, when he was unceremoniously bundled over on the edge of the box by Bolger but Vaulks resultant free-kick was blocked by the Fleetwood wall. Moments later, Dempsey and Bolger incurred the wrath of the referee, to earn yellow cards, following clumsy fouls before Moore drilled a fierce cross across the home box, in the last noteworthy action of the game.

Rovers had to settle for a goalless draw on their return to Sky Bet League One against Gillingham. Manager Darren Ferguson handed first League starts in Rovers’ shirts to summer signings Danny Andrew and Ben Whiteman. Niall Mason was also in the team after signing permanently in the close season, and new loan man Rodney Kongolo started on the bench for Rovers. Rovers started the game brightly and immediately had the game’s first chance. Good work down the middle from Whiteman saw him put Liam Mandeville through on goal. Mandeville, who ended with six goals in pre-season, looped the ball over Thomas Horn in the Gills’ goal, but Luke O’Neill got back just in time to clear off the line and over for a corner. It was the home side who had much of possession early on, with Whiteman, James Coppinger and Matty Blair all working well down the right, but neither were able to create much of an opening. Mandeville was also causing a lot of problems for the visitors, and yet more good work from him earned Rovers a corner. The resulting set piece saw Holy scrambling to get back and tip over Andrew’s corner from the right, with the left-back almost opening his Rovers’ account in stunning fashion. Rovers’ best chance of the first half came as the game reached the half-hour mark, and it was one that should’ve put them in front. Whiteman eased through the Gills’ midfield, then passed to Coppinger, who threaded the ball through to Blair. Blair was one-on-one 12 yards from goal with Holy, but the Gillingham keeper stood up well and made a strong save to ensure the scores remained level. Gillingham’s first chances of the game came shortly afterwards, however like the Blair effort

moments before, two pieces of brilliance in the home goal prevented them from taking the lead. First, Gills’ captain Lee Martin’s cross in was met well at the back post by Connor Ogilvie, but Ian Lawlor saved superbly and via the post, the ball went out for a corner. From this, arguably the best chance of the game came, Martin’s set piece was headed back by Josh Parker and Gabriel Zakuani had the chance to put the Gills in front. The former Posh man’s header from close range was spectacularly saved by the impressive Lawlor once more and the game remained goalless. The final chance came from the home side once more though, again the trio of Whiteman, Coppinger and Blair all caused Gillingham difficulty, and Coppinger found Andrew in plenty of space 20 yards out from goal, but his first-time effort was again dealt with by Holy, who was keeping the away side in the game as the half drew to a close. Rovers started the second half as quickly as they did the first, earning themselves a corner within the first two minutes. Andrew’s ball in from the left was met by Andy Butler, but the centre back’s towering header was well stopped once again by Holy. Mandeville had Rovers’ next chance, a ball was lofted over the top of the Gills’ defence and was latched on to by the young striker, but his strike on the bounce was narrowly over. Gillingham then had the next effort, in what was becoming a lively encounter. Another corner saw Martin’s ball pick out Scott Wagstaff on the far side of the box, and his curler was stopped at the second attempt by Lawlor. John Marquis looked to pick up from where he left off last season with the game’s next chance. Last season’s top scorer created himself some space down the left before cutting inside. His curling

effort from 25 yards had Holy rushing to stop it, but the ball went narrowly wide. Marquis then had another effort just 60 seconds later, a free kick 20 yards out from Andrew was blocked by the Gillingham wall, but found its way through to the striker, however his shot was again saved by Holy who was being kept very busy in the visitors’ goal. Holy would be left standing just moments later as Whiteman went closest next. The on-loan midfielder picked up a bouncing ball and unleashed a dipping effort on goal, striking the top of the crossbar and going out for a goal kick. Rovers then brought on new man Kongolo, adding more pace in to the attack, and his immediately tried to make an impact, charging down a Gillingham free kick and broke forward with Marquis, laying off to the striker, but his effort was tame and held once more by Holy. One last chance

in added time for Rovers saw Whiteman again go close, this time Mason passed the ball back to the young midfielder, but his curling effort from 25 yards out was headed over once more by O’Neill. No goals scored but a promising start to life back in the third tier from Rovers who on another day would have comfortably picked up the three points.

winning return for blades The Blades returned to Championship football with a deserved victory. Skipper Billy Sharp scored the allimportant goal with a first half header in a game that saw ‘goals’ ruled out and the woodwork struck on numerous occasions. Boss Wilder’s first Championship selection included three new starters. Blackman, Stevens and Stearman made their competitive Lane bow, with Lundstram among the substitutes. The Blades won a free-kick in a dangerous position and a corner inside two minutes - a frantic opening was entertaining for the bumper crowd. O’Connell was forced to concede a corner to cut out Dalsgaard’s cross and Jota’s shot was tipped over by Blackman after Fleck surrendered possession as the visitors looked a threat. United’s best early chance saw Stevens hold up a cross but Clarke could not get enough on his header. Jota

shot wide after Vibe beat the offside trap but as the half hour mark approached United looked to force Brentford back and went mightily close on 25 minutes. The ball broke to Stevens 25 yards out and his shot deflected off a defender onto a post and dropped, frustratingly, straight into goalkeeper Bentley’s grasp. A spell of pressure saw Basham come close to connecting with a header at the back post, Coutts have a shot blocked and a penalty appeal, but the opening goal was not too far away. On 39 minutes, a corner from the left was recycled at the back post by Clarke, who clipped in a cross and SHARP found space in the box to head home, despite Bentley getting a hand to the ball. Sharp celebrated but was soon holding his head after a clash with Egan - both needed treatment - whilst the remaining first half minutes saw the Blades stay on top. Like the first half, the start of the second

was hectic. Within 40 seconds of the restart, Clarke’s persistence saw him get the better of Henry but after the subsequent cross Sharp’s header saved by Bentley. Jota shot at Blackman from distance but United remained the dominant force and had two goals ruled out for offside in the space of two minutes! Firstly, after Stearman had hooked the ball back into the box, Clarke bundled home but the linesman was maybe too keen to put up his flag, and replays showed later that the goal should have counted. Soon after, following a foul on Carruthers, a clever free-kick saw Fleck curl against a post and Sharp tucked home the rebound but again the flag was raised. Fleck hit a right foot shot just wide but Brentford emphasised that they were a threat with a triple chance just after the hour. Jota’s long range shot was batted away by Blackman, Yennaris headed the rebound against the crossbar and Vibe headed

Sheffield United headed into the unknown on Saturday afternoon. The question of whether the squad was equipped to compete against a side scattered with quality was ready to be answered. Chris Wilder’s Blade side answered that question comfortably during their 1-0 win over Brentford. The Bees provided a different threat to what the club had been used too last season. Dean Smith’s side had the majority of the possession, 59% to be exact, and used it in a creative manner. Brentford were keen to involve their star man, Jota, but the Blades did well to

numb his influence. United looked a threat going forward, with Leon Clarke’s hold-up play being a particular strength of the attack. On another day, the score could have been two or three nil if offside calls had gone United’s way. The performance on the day was so complete and impressive, that arguments on who should have been named Man of the Match continued online into the night. My pick would be new signing Jamal Blackman. The Chelsealoanee kept the Blades in the game with some great saves, including an incredible

stop to deny Neal Maupay after the striker appeared to have gone past the young goalkeeper. A positive start was key for the 23-yearold, confidence will only encourage good performances during Simon Moore’s injury lay-off. A team performance of this manner will need to be repeated if the Blades are to take anything away from the Riverside Stadium on Saturday. A positive result against a club who have spent over £40 million in the window so far, will be another indicator that the club is ready to handle the challenge of the Championship.

the second rebound over from a matter of yards. On 68 minutes, O’Connell produced a great block after a Watkins pass had put Vibe in and Wilder’s first change saw Lundstram take over from Carruthers. As the game reached the final 20 minutes, both teams were visibly tiring. Brentford used

their final substitute and Lavery took over from Sharp. A fantastic pass from Woods put the fresh legs of Maupay in the clear on 81 minutes but the substitute was denied by a tremendous save by Blackman. Brentford were now forcing the issue and United were defending doggedly.

this one’s for the fans, says wilder Chris Wilder dedicated Saturday’s three points to the fans. Back in the Championship after six seasons in England’s third tier, Billy Sharp’s firsthalf header proved to be enough to overcome a talented Brentford outfit at Bramall Lane and the Blades boss says it’s a moment the fans have deserved. He remarked: “I’m delighted and its reward for our supporters really. It’s not about me, the coaching staff or the players, this one is for the fans, for the passion, the love and enthusiasm they’ve shown throughout the last six years. You’ve got to be a special breed to be

involved with this football club and what they’ve had to do over the last six years has been pretty tough, so it’s a big thank for their effort and what an atmosphere. It was absolutely bouncing and something very special. The players didn’t do bad either I suppose!” Wilder added: “We had a goalkeeper who has made a few vital saves, we’ve

On 88 minutes Maupay curled over after linking up with Watkins. The visitors were patient but the Blades protected Blackman well and three minutes of added time saw Basham, Stearman and O’Connell all involved before the three points were confirmed.

run about a bit, hit the post, created chances and had two goals disallowed, but that’s us. We work hard, we leave everything out there, we were a little bit loose in possession and we didn’t overload like we usually do, but we’re stepping up a level against excellent opposition and we can be pleased with gaining a valuable three points.”

misery on the road for owls Wednesday went down to an opening day defeat at Preston, with Daniel Johnson’s late penalty ensuring the points stayed at Deepdale. The Lancashire side dominated the game in terms of chances and were good value for the win as the Owls struggled to find a way through. Substitute Ross Wallace came close from distance in the second half but overall Preston had the edge. The Owls had an early escape when Sean Maguire almost capitalised on a loose ball but Keiren Westwood was off his line swiftly to thwart the danger. Glenn Loovens had half a chance at the other end only to shoot straight at Chris Maxwell between the Lilywhites’ sticks. Play was relatively even

as the first half unfolded and the closest Preston came was through a Callum Robinson free kick that sailed past the post before Westwood denied Maguire when the forward fired powerfully on the angle. Robinson headed into the grateful arms of Westwood just after the restart after finding space in the area before the Owls enjoyed a brief spell of pressure in the final third. Preston broke, though, and the dangerous Robinson curled past Westwood but beyond the far post. Fernando Forestieri then headed narrowly wide after a Sam Hutchinson cross caught out the Preston backline and Wallace unleased from distance but the ball whistled inches over the bar. Then with 15 minutes to go, the hosts took

a grip on the game and ultimately took the points. First, ex-Owl Tommy Spurr headed against the crossbar from a Paul Gallagher corner before Robinson’s shot from range flew just over. The Lilywhites pushed on and got their reward on 80 minutes after Tom Lees brought down Jordan Hugill in the box. The referee pointed to the spot and up stepped Johnson to send Westwood the wrong way from 12 yards and Wednesday home with nothing from their first game of the new campaign. Wednesday: Westwood, Hunt, Loovens, Lees, Pudil, Boyd (Wallace 67), Bannan, Hutchinson (Jones 70), Reach, Rhodes (Hooper 58), Forestieri

fans promised positive reaction by skipper Owls Captain Glenn Loovens promised the fans an immediate resction to Saturday’s dismal performance at Preston. The Carabao Cup clash with Chesterfield will provide the Owls a platform and opportunity to right those wrongs

and Loovens insists it’s one the players aim to take. “We all know we can play much better, it was a total off-day from everyone,” he said during Monday’s pre-match press conference. It’s not the standard we normally play but we have to forget about it and move on and the good thing is the next game is always close by. We have to forget quickly and we have the next game to prepare for tomorrow. Everyone has to do better.” Wednesday

face their first Hillsborough test of the season against League 2 side Chesterfield and following the frustrations of Saturday, Loovens says nothing will be taken for granted and added: “We need a win, we can’t think it will be easy because we play a League 2 side, far from it. I know their manager well, they will be prepared and we need to go into the game in the right frame of mind. We owe everyone a reaction and I am sure we will do that tomorrow.”
