BEN PARKINSON HONOURED WITH FREEDOM OF THE BOROUGH OF DONCASTER A special ceremony took place at the Mansion House in Doncaster last week in honour of Lance Bombardier Ben Parkinson MBE. Ben is the country’s most injured surviving serviceman and this honour is to recognise his bravery, fighting spirit and determination in meeting every challenge and adversity he has faced. Since Ben was seriously injured in Afghanistan in 2006 he has set himself a series of challenges to raise money for the Pilgrim Bandits and various military charities and was made an MBE in 2015.

The Freedom of the Borough is the highest honour that the authority can bestow on individuals who have provided exceptional service to their town or enhanced its reputation through their actions. Doncaster’s Civic Mayor, Cllr George Derx, said: “It is entirely right that Ben is recognised in this way. We rarely honour people with the Freedom of the Borough but Ben is an inspiration to so many people not only in Doncaster but from around the country. We are delighted to bestow Ben with this honour which is so well deserved.”

Ben Parkinson said: “I am very proud to receive this honour. It means a great deal to me and I am very grateful for all the support that the people

of Doncaster have given to me over the years.” Ben, the Civic Mayor Cllr Derx, Mayor Ros Jones and Jo Miller, Doncaster Council’s

Chief Executive, all signed the official Roll of Honour. Ben was also presented with a framed Freedom Scroll.

This year’s event is the tenth time it has been held, and the second time it has been held in Sheffield. The estimated £1.4m boost to Sheffield from the Games is made up on spend on accommodation, local travel and venue hire. Event organisers think the figure will be higher in reality, once further spend in restaurants, leisure and retail is taken into account. Here is what one of our successful quitters had to say… “The main reason for me to stop smoking was initially my health. I knew it was deteriorating, the other reasons were my children, my wider family and friends. It goes without saying also that the issue of money is always a factor as cigarettes inevitably go up in price. I needed to free myself from this awful addiction. The one to one support I received was amazing and the nicotine replacement that the adviser and I agreed on was perfect for my level of addiction. The support I received at the weekly meetings and the carbon monoxide readings helped a lot. It was great and I am so pleased that I managed to quit and can I say proud to be a

THE BOTANIST RAISES A GLASS TO NEW CHARITY PARTNERSHIP The Botanist in Leopold Square has unveiled plans to raise money for one of Sheffield’s leading children’s cancer charities. The pub chain has announced that the new charity partner for its Sheffield site will be The Parents Association of Children with Tumours and Leukaemia (PACT), an organisation based in the city which provides support the families of children suffering from cancer. Funds for the charity will be raised from a percentage from the purchase of kids’ meals, limited edition drinks and fundraising events organised by the venue. James McBride, Sales & Events Manager for the site said: “We are very proud to be supporting PACT. The charity does tremendous work in supporting families, the wards and clinics, and contributing to vital research. “We hope the donations we raise will help to further their very worthy cause, and

continue to help families affected by cancer in Sheffield.” Coordinator for PACT, Beryl Welburn, said: “We’re thrilled that The Botanist will be collecting donations for PACT. “As a not-for-profit, all funds go directly to supporting the families of children suffering with cancer at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. “Every year we provide trips and treats for the children and their families, purchase equipment for the ward and clinic, contribute to ongoing research into treatment and provide support from diagnosis to remission. “It’s fundraising like this that has enabled us to go from strength to strength to help dozens of affected families.” The Botanist officially opened their doors in October, and offers its guests a range of botanical-style cocktails, locally sourced and world renowned gins and ales along with an honest, rotisserie style menu to accompany their vast drinks range.

CHOOSING CARE IS LIKE PLAYING “RUSSIAN ROULETTE” Vulnerable people are playing “Russian roulette” when they need care in England, campaigners warn, as a quarter of services are failing on safety. The Care Quality Commission said drug errors, lack of staff and falls were major problems, after inspecting 24,000 services. Nursing homes had the worst problems, with a third falling short on safety. The CQC said the failings across services for the elderly and disabled were “completely unacceptable”. The findings mark the completion of the first round of inspections under the “tougher” system launched in 2014 amid concerns problems were going undetected. One million vulnerable people use care services - either getting their fees paid by councils or funding it themselves. More than 200,000 of them live in nursing homes, which had the most serious problems. Some 37% of homes failed on safety, with inspectors noting they had a particular problems recruiting and retaining nurses. Just below a quarter of care homes and home helps were rated not safe enough, while in community support, including sheltered housing, 17% fell short. The CQC highlighted poor care inspectors had found, including: • the death of a 62-year-old man who had broken his neck in a fall from a shower chair at a West Yorkshire care home. The company in charge of the site was prosecuted and fined £190,000 • a number of cases where residents had been put back to bed in the morning

because there had not been enough staff to provide them with support • a 79-year-old woman left with serious burns after falling against an uncovered radiator at a home in London • cases where incontinence pads had not been changed regularly and were even reused in some instances • a resident of a home who had died after errors with his anti-blood clotting drugs • a home that had managed its rotas so badly that care staff had had to help out in the kitchen at lunchtime when residents had needed help • a home care service that had missed calls or carried out rushed visits, with examples of 30-minute calls being done in five Overall, inspectors have successfully prosecuted five care providers and another 1,000 have had enforcement action taken against them, from being closed down to handed warning notices. All the services deemed to be failing would continue to be monitored and re-inspected, the CQC said. But it pointed out that, despite the concerns, most had achieved good or outstanding ratings on safety. How to pick a good care home Age UK advises families to check: • the latest CQC report on the home • whether the staff are friendly and welcoming • if senior staff are on duty at all times and whether they know residents and families personally • whether residents can choose their daily routines

Each year every household in the UK is sent a Household Enquiry Form to check the right people are registered to vote and whether voter registration records are correct. The form is part of the Electoral Commission’s Annual Canvass, but is organised locally, usually by local councils. It is posted out between July and November each year (the exact date varies). The form lists the current eligible voters in your household and asks you to check and update the details. It may look like a council circular or piece of junk mail, but DON’T ignore it. By law, you have to respond – even if it shows the correct info. If you continue to ignore it and all the reminders you could be fined up to £1,000. Forms are being sent now – respond in time or risk a £1,000 fine. This is the key time to ensure you respond before the deadline, which varies by council between now and the end of November.

• the ratio of staff to residents and the turnover of staff • the dementia support available Chief inspector Andrea Sutcliffe said funding remained an issue for the sector and a “long-term solution” needed to be found but lack of money was “no excuse”. “There is still too much poor care, some providers are failing to improve, and there is even some deterioration,” she said. “This is completely and utterly unacceptable.” Caroline Abrahams, of Age UK, said the findings were “alarming” and vulnerable people were “effectively playing Russian roulette when they need care”. She added: “Taken as a whole, this report is a graphic demonstration of why older people desperately need the government to follow through on its commitment to consult on proposals for strengthening social care later this year.” Margaret Willcox, president of the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services, said councils and providers would be “re-doubling our mutual efforts to ensure older and disabled people and their families get the reliable, personal care they need and deserve”. Health Minister Jackie Doyle-Price agreed the lapses were “unacceptable”. She said the additional investment announced - £2bn over three years - and the forthcoming consultation on the social care system expected later this year would put the sector on a “stable footing”.

YORKSHIRE GETS READY FOR HUGE BH WEEKEND AT LEEDS FESTIVAL by John Webster

The world-famous Leeds festival returns at the end of August and the highly anticipated event looks simply unmissable. The bank holiday weekend will see thousands of music lovers descend upon the fields of Bramham Park to be entertained by some of the biggest music stars on the planet. Here’s a pick of just some of the talent that make up this year’s incredible line-up: FRIDAY 25th The first of the heavyweight headliners is Muse and when it comes to putting on a live show, the space rockers are up there with the very best. It’s their third time headlining Leeds and they guarantee that Friday night will end in spectacular style. For many people, the icing on the cake of this year’s festival will be the return of Liam Gallagher. What could be better than singing along to Oasis classics like ‘Slide Away’ and ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’, with the rock’n’roll legend himself? Topping the bill on the NME stage are

Californian sisters, Haim. The talented trio who have just released their second album ‘Something to Tell You’, will bring plenty of energy and good-time vibes – and hopefully some California sunshine too. The BBC Radio 1 Dance tent will, as ever, be bursting at the seams and bouncing all weekend. It will provide the platform for some of the most talented DJs and music producers from around the globe. Topping the list on Friday night is the enigmatic new face of electronic music: Marshmello. Wrexham pop-punks, Neck Deep, have enjoyed a euphoric rise to the top; they’re the most successful British band in the history of their genre and last year completed a headline tour of 15 countries in four months. They celebrate the release of their third album by headlining the Lock Up stage. As well as performing on the Main stage, last year’s biggest breakthrough band, Blossoms, will be appearing as special guest DJs with renowned indie club night, Propaganda, on the Alternative stage.

SATURDAY 26th When it comes to headlining acts, few have got an arsenal of hits as impressive as what Kasabian have at their disposal. From classics like ‘Club Foot’ and ‘Fire’ to new album belter ‘You’re in Love with a Psycho’. Charismatic frontman Serge Pizzorno will ensure this performance goes down as one of the best in the festival’s history. Last year Judas had the privilege of performing an impromptu set on the Main stage. Since then, the Londonbased rockers have gone from strength to strength: They’ve gained a strong reputation; built a loyal fan base; played countless gigs across the UK and might just be about to explode. This year they have the honour of opening the Main stage. On the NME stage is one of Britain’s most promising young musicians, Declan McKenna. The 18-year-old multi-instrumentalist is already an accomplished songwriter and has just released his debut album ‘What Do You Think about the Car’. He’s the voice of a generation and is

being tipped by many in the industry to go to the top. Topping the roster in the Dance tent is Fatboy Slim: one of the most successful British DJs of all time, and a true icon of electronic music. The Amazons delivered one of the highlights of Glastonbury with an outstanding highenergy performance earlier in the summer. The rock’n’rollers from Reading are one of the most unanimously tipped guitar bands in the UK. They have been given an early slot on the Festival Republic stage and it promises to be something very special. Grime legend and dubstep icon, P Mone,, released his studio debut ‘Live and Direct’ last year which featured the likes of Stormzy and Rubylee. He’s ones of the UKs most exciting MCs and will be on the Radio 1xtra stage. SUNDAY 27th Bringing the festival to a close is one of the biggest superstars on the planet. The King of hip-hop, Eminem, has sold over 170 million albums worldwide, making him one of the biggest selling artists of the

21st century. His return to Leeds marks an extremely rare opportunity to witness an icon in the flesh, with a set that will add another legendary chapter to the story of arguably the greatest rapper of all time. With their Smithsesque sound and explosive performances, indie rockers Blaenavon are fast becoming one of the most captivating live acts around. The Hampshire trio released their debut album ‘That’s Your Lot’ earlier this year and have been given an early slot on the NME stage. Also on the NME stage, and with the potential to be next on the list of great

Manchester bands, are punk rockers Cabbage. They’re obnoxious, loud, and provocative; their gigs are chaotic and they sound incredible – not to be missed! Destined to become one of the world’s biggest pop stars is Sigrid. Her hit, ‘Don’t Kill My Vibe’ has got thousands hooked already and the Norwegian sensation will gain plenty more fans when she performs on the Dance stage. On the Festival Republic stage, Scottish indie kings, The View will deliver a typically boisterous set, laced with singalong favourites like ‘Wasted Little DJs’ and ‘Tacky Tattoo’. Multi-award winning stand-up Bill Bailey will be one be appearing on the Alternative stage on the final night of the festival, as will the thought-provoking

set to be one of the highlights of 2017.

and hilarious Simon Amstell. With one of the most exciting line-ups in years, and over 200 acts performing across the weekend, the Leeds festival looks

FIVE STAR MILLERS FIVE-STAR Rotherham United earned their first Sky Bet League One victory of the season, in some style, as they put Southend United to the sword following a superb attacking display. Following their hard-fought Carabao Cup victory over Lincoln City, Millers chief Paul Warne kept faith with his starting line-up for the visit of the Shrimpers. The home side had the first sight of goal when Joe Mattock was bundled over by Jermaine McGlashan and from the resultant free-kick, Newell swung an inviting centre which saw Moore emerge from the ruck of bodies in the box to plant a downward header which forced Mark Oxley to scurry across his line to parry the ball to safety. In a fast Millers start, Williams had a shot blocked en-route to goal before Darren Potter stabbed an effort harmlessly over the Southend bar. Moments later, dazzing footwork from Newell forced McGlashan into a clumsy foul and the exPeterborough midfielder almost made the visitors pay with another tantalising centre which saw Semi Ajayi rise highest in the six-yard box but he couldn’t control his header as it failed to trouble the visitors goal. The Millers were almost rewarded

for their whirlwind opening when good work from Moore and Williams paved the way for Lee Frecklington to dart into space to fizz a superb centre which was inch-perfect for Proctor, whose powerful header flew narrowly over the visitors bar. However, Southend failed to heed the warning as Rotherham broke the deadlock on the quarter hour when Potter charged down a visitors clearance before showing good awareness to flick the ball into the path of Williams, who charged into the box, before playing a perfectly-weighted pass into the path of Moore, who calmly slid the ball under the body of Oxley. The Millers were visibly lifted by the breakthrough and they doubled their lead, just a minute later, when a ball into the channel by Newell saw Proctor ghost away from his marker to play a superb ball across the face of goal and Moore, who had got on the wrong side of his marker, kept his nerve to slip the ball into the bottom corner of the visitors net. In Southend’s first forays of note, Ryan Leonard shot harmlessly wide from distance before Simon Cox almost caught the Millers napping following a quickly-taken free-kick but he headed over the bar. However, the Millers

John Marquis, James Coppinger and Alfie May were on the scoresheet as a secondhalf masterclass from Rovers sealed victory at Blackburn. Darren Ferguson made three changes, with Matty Blair, James Coppinger and Liam Mandeville all returning after missing the midweek Carabao Cup win at Bradford City. Andy Williams also returned to the bench, where he was joined by Issam Ben Khemis who was part of a matchday squad for the first time after receiving international clearance. The opening period was quit, with the most danger the home side created coming from a low Paul Caddis cross from the right which Joe Wright cleared. The visitors were almost gifted the lead after 13 minutes. Caddis attempted to pass the ball back to goalkeeper David Raya, only for the latter to mis-judge the bounce and have to go rushing back to his line to keep it out.Rovers won their first corner two minutes later when Danny Andrew’s cross was deflected over - though the delivery was too close to Raya. Chances started to come more frequently for the visitors as the half-hour approached. John Marquis had the best opportunity after 27 minutes when Niall Mason’s clipped cross found him in a central position - his first-time shot was sharp, but deflected away by Ryan Nyambe. Moments later Raya spilled the ball after Andrew’s free-kick from just inside his own half. He was under pressure from Andy Butler, but there was no suggestion of a foul and the home keeper dived gratefully onto the loose ball. The home side finally tested Ian Lawlor after 33 minutes, but Caddis’ effort after cutting inside was weak and easily collected by Rovers’ Irish keeper. Marquis again had another opportunity

after good play down the left. He tried to curl the ball into the top-right corner, but it went just over. Rovers started the second-half quickly and took the lead almost instantly by capitalising on a mistake from the home side. Elliott Ward could not control a pass from Charlie Mulgrew, and the ball fell to Marquis. The Rovers’ No.9 had all the time in the world to place his shot past Raya into the bottom-left corner of the net. Caddis fired over for the home side, before Tony Mowbray made a double change trying to get back into the game with Dominic Samuel and Bradley Dack entering the fray. Ferguson also made a change, with Alfie May coming off the bench to replace Liam Mandeville. Rovers doubled their advantage after 65 minutes. A break down the middle led to Marquis feeding the ball to Coppinger, who was played through but went down under a challenge with just Raya to beat. The visiting captain dusted himself off to take the spot-kick, hitting it hard and low past Raya to make it 2-0. Rovers were playing with confidence as if they were the home side, and Tommy Rowe almost made it three with a low effort from distance tipped round a post by Raya. The home side could not be discounted, and Lawlor had to be alert to tip an effort from substitute Gladden over the bar. But the match was as good as wrapped up after 82 minutes when the home keeper Raya did not deal with a long clearance from Coppinger. He tries to cushion the ball to a defender with a header, but only managed to find May who was happy to accept the gift and calmly slotted the ball into an unguarded net.

added a third goal on 23 minutes when Mattock’s incisive pass presented Frecklington with the chance to race into the box before feeding Proctor, with his back to goal, and the frontman’s lay-off gave Newell, the opportunity to strike with his less favoured right-foot and the ball flew off his boot to beat the outstretched hand of Oxley to find the far corner of the visitors goal. Newell swung a delicious corner in the danger area and Moore shrugged off the attentions of his nearest marker, to power a point-blank header over the bar, in arguably his easiest chance of the half. Great tenacity on halfway from the likes of Williams and Proctor brought the Stadium to its feet before Cox summed up Southend’s first-half frustration when he saw yellow for persistent offending. With half-time approaching, Newell planted the ball forward and Proctor played the ball back into the path of the ex-Peterborough midfielder, who drilled a low effort which forced Oxley into a smart, low save to his left. The Millers capped a superb half of fine-flowing football with a fourth goal on the stroke of half-time when a clipped ball over the top saw Proctor show the Southend defence a clean pair of heels to plant a ball across the face of goal and Moore calmly struck a low effort which arrowed into the bottom corner of the net giving Oxley no chance. Following the interval, Southend almost pulled one back when the Millers were caught napping at the back and MarcAntoine Fortune and Michael Kightly were denied by Richard O’Donnell before Proctor’s superb through ball put Williams in the clear but Oxley denied the Australian with a smart save at his feet. Millers’ next attack, Williams was inches away from connecting with Mattock’s darting run and cross, with the goal at his mercy but the ex-Barnsley midfielder was not to be denied, as he notched his first goal for the club soon after. There looked little danger for the visitors until Proctor swept a ball to the right flank and Moore fired a cross-cum-shot across goal and with neither Oxley and the Southend defender in a position to intervene, Williams had the simple task of tapping home into the unguarded net. With the game as good as over, Fortune stung the palms of O’Donnell with a snap shot before Moore was withdrawn from the proceedings, just seconds after seeing yellow following an aerial clash with Leonard, to a standing ovation from the Millers faithful. Substitute David Ball almost nipped in with a sixth goal but he was denied by the legs of Oxley. Southend’s miserable afternoon was summed up when Robinson got behind the Rotherham defence to play a ball across the box where Fortune looked a certain scorer, but the visitors’ striker smashed his effort against the foot of the post, before the ball was scrambled to safety.

SOLID & MATURE FOR BOSS DARREN

Darren Ferguson hailed the maturity of his side after they recorded an impressive 3-1 victory at Blackburn Rovers. Second-half goals from John Marquis, James Coppinger and Alfie May sealed the points which left Rovers sixth in Sky Bet League One. Ferguson said: “I thought we deserved the victory, our performance was a mature and solid one. We had to be disciplined about what we did, both on and off the ball. There was a real maturity about the team, every player knew what they were doing. The players look confident and fit.” Rovers held their own in an opening period which was even, but stepped up a gear in the second period. Ferguson added: “In the first half they didn’t cause us too many problems, both sides kept the ball well without too many chances for either team and we were clinical in the second half. I know there were a couple of mistakes, but

you have still got to punish them. It was quite a tactical first half, but once the first goal went in we were very clinical. I was delighted throughout the game. We’ve started the season well and probably should have won all three games. But I’ve no doubt Blackburn will be right up there because the quality will come through, but we knew we could cause them problems and we did.”

BORO BLUES AS REF DENIES BLADES An injury-time disallowed ‘goal’ left United with a sour taste in Saturday’s encounter at Middlesbrough. Dael Fry headed past his own goalkeeper but referee Peter Bankes, with the help of one of his assistants, ruled the effort out. Earlier, Rudy Gestede had given Boro the lead.Boss Wilder

There was little between the teams early on, although the initial opportunities dropped to the Blades. Clarke had time and space from Freeman’s pull-back but his shot was blocked and

Fleck almost wriggled clear but defender Fry added a vital touch. Boro’s first chance saw Bamford balloon a free-kick over from 25 yards but they grabbed the lead on 20 minutes. Late on Clarke’s cross was blocked and from the follow up, his effort was saved at the near post by Randolph. In injury-time, O’Connell won a freekick from Christie and United thought they had levelled. Duffy delivered and as O’Connell challenged, Fry put the ball in his own net. However, the linesman on the dugouts side, who had earlier wrongly flagged Freeman offside, had his flag up again to disallow, much to the surprise of both sets of supporters and players. In the final minute, a Duffy volley was not far away but the final whistle blew with United rightly feeling aggrieved.

We were the dominant force in the second-half, Duffy and Ched made an impact and Couttsy was tremendous, Boro had to change their shape to stop us. It is a massive, massive decision that’s gone against us, but we have to take it on the chin.”

DEANO’S HISTORIC GOAL 25 YEARS OLD

It’s 25 years ago on 15th August that Brian Deane scored the first ever Premier League goal. In front of the Kop, five minutes into the clash against Manchester United, Deano ghosted in unchallenged from the back post to head home past Peter Schmeichel, after Carl Bradshaw’s long-throw from the right hadn’t been cleared at the near post. The actual matchball from 15 August 1992 now sits proudly in United’s Legends of the Lane Museum. In the same game he scored a second after 50 minutes from the penalty spot after Gary Pallister had fouled Alan Cork and despite a goal from Mark Hughes

ball in midfield but finding it difficult to penetrate the Boro defence. Duffy was introduced before the hour and he was involved in a patient build up to a good chance on 62 minutes - a low Stevens cross was presented by Clarke to Coutts, who controlled a side-footed effort which was heading to the bottom corner before Randolph palmed away. For the final quarter, Evans took over from Sharp and quickly shot wide of the near post as United remained on top in terms of possession and territory. Boro, though, remained a threat and on 74 minutes Blackman saved from Christie. Brooks was United’s final throw of the dice, the youngster replaced Freeman, meaning a slight

After a debatable corner, Clayton’s purposeful deep corner saw Friend arrive unmarked at the back post but Coutts cleared at the expense of another set piece. As halftime approached, Boro remained on top. From Christie’s cross, Gestede rose above Basham but the striker’s header struck the outside of a post, then Bamford curled just wide from the edge of the box and Forshaw sliced over a separate chance just before the interval. Both sides won a corner early in the second period and the first chance of the half saw the home side’s Howson fire over from 25 yards. The Blades were seeing plenty of the

and sometimes you can’t get overawed when you look at the teamsheets, but I don’t want that to be us. I believe we deserved something for our second-half performance and regardless of how the goal goes in at the death, it goes in, it was a great piece of play and we were all off the bench. It would have been a great point at the home of the favourites, four points from two matches and I’ve got a lot of disappointed players and staff and no doubt

OWLS OFF THE MARK BUT POINTS DROPPED The Owls posted their first point of the season with a 1-1 draw against QPR at Hillsborough. Jamie Mackie gave the visitors the lead midway through the opening period but Wednesday hit back just after the break. The hosts looked the more likely to take all

three points but the Rangers rearguard held firm to take a share of the spoils back to London. Wednesday had the better of the early chances, with Daniel Pudil and Jordan Rhodes in the thick of the action. First, Pudil was on the end of a Ross Wallace

corner and headed over the bar on the bounce before Rhodes forced a diving save from Alex Smithies. Rangers responded with veteran striker Jamie Mackie firing hard and low at Keiren Westwood – and the visitors took the lead from their next attack on 23

minutes. Pawel Wszolek sent Mackie scampering through down the left side of the penalty area to slot home beneath the advancing Westwood. The Owls, having already lost Sam Hutchinson to an early knock, saw Glenn Loovens pick up an injury trying to prevent the goal and the skipper also departed. The Owls sought a way back and almost got it four minutes before the break. David Jones swung a deep free kick to the back post and Tom Lees climbed high

but his header just fell the wrong side of the upright. Still there was time for Winnall to plant an Adam Reach feed wide as the Owls finished the first half with a flourish. Momentum stayed with Wednesday after the resumption and Smithies saved well from Winnall, but could do nothing to prevent him levelling on 49 minutes. Barry Bannan’s cross from the left picked out Winnall in space and the substitute made no mistake, giving Smithies no chance from 12 yards. Next Bannan teed up

Jordan Rhodes, whose close range header went over the crossbar as the game was turning on its head. Smithies saved in the nick of time when Gary Hooper nodded goalwards from an Adam Reach cross before the game entered into something of a stalemate. QPR looked dangerous on the break and might have nicked the points with six minutes to go but LuaLua shot wide with the goal gaping following an accurate cross from Conor Washington.

WE PUT UP A GOOD FIGHT TODAY, SAYS WINNALL WE WANTED ALL THREE POINTS Carlos Carvalhal felt the draw against QPR was probably the right result, whilst conceding his disappointment at not having taken all three, as the Owls got off the mark in the new Championship campaign. Although the head coach was not happy with the stalemate, he said on another day the points would have stayed in Sheffield: “In the first half, it was OK, not great and QPR scored the first goal.We had injuries that disturbed the situation but we needed to do more in the second half. I was very pleased with the way we came back. In parts of the second half,

this was my Sheffield Wednesday, the way we want to play. We moved the ball quickly, scored one goal and had chances to score another but we did not take them. Rangers also had chances and this is football. It was a point but I am not happy

we had to put on a show for our fans and show a bit of fight and get ourselves back in the game. We know we haven’t found our top performance yet, but we’re working on it and we put up a fight and showed that when things are going against us a little bit, we’re not going to go under and give up. We’ve come back, we’ve got a result, it’s not the three points we wanted but it’s a point, it’s a start and we will build on it.” Winnall is now off the mark for the season

but says he will not be setting himself any targets this campaign. “I don’t like to put a number on anything. I feel like I should score every game, I don’t like to pick a number to target and limit myself because I feel like I can score whenever I play. To be the one that got the goal today, it’s obviously a massive confidence boost for myself.Hopefully now it’s something that me and the team can build on now going into Wednesday.”

Sam Winnall said the Owls’ first point of the season against QPR will give the side confidence going into Wednesday night’s game against Sunderland. QPR took the lead in the first half through Jamie Mackie before substitute Winnall grabbed an equaliser in what was an even game at Hillsborough. The ex-Barnsley man said: “We knew we had to get our season going. We were all disappointed with the result at Preston last week and we knew

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

I’ve had a new bait to use this week. Called ‘Smokey Jack’, it’s another from the Spotted Fin stable, and due for release in 2018, but I had some sent out to try, and see what I thought… I hate the term ‘field tester’, or worse still ‘bait tester’, as I’m not convinced that ‘testing’ a bait product which is already on sale, is actually ‘testing’, but sadly, that is what many anglers I seem to meet on the banks claim to be doing. “What’s in it then?” I asked one such tester. “Plum” he replied. I enquired “plum what?” only to told “plum flavouring!” When I ventured to ask whether it was perhaps a fishmeal, milk protein or otherwise product, he replied that he didn’t know, but he was definitely a ‘tester’ and I should try some! Don’t get me wrong, I’ve probably mentioned it before, but the amount of real field testers is minute, and if you are testing a product which is already on sale, then you’ve been had! I’ve got absolutely nothing against ‘team members’ either, (obviously, I am one!) we all like to get something at discount rates, but come on, we’re all marketing tools, nothing more… just don’t claim to be something else, because you’ll soon get found out! So, back to Smokey Jack. “What’s in it then?” In truth, I have no idea, I’ve never rolled a boilie in my life, and you could sit in front of me, give me a long list of ingredients, tell me how it all works together, and I’ll probably still just pull strange faces without any real comprehension. I have no interest in why, how, or what for, I’m just bothered whether it works or not, so I put my faith in those who do know what they are on about when it comes to bait. I can tell you though, that since moving onto Spotted Fin baits, I’ve been pleased with my

catch rates, and that’s good enough for me… Anyway, I’ve been back on the bank again this week, a stillwater again, with Smokey Jack on one rod, and Spotted Fin’s flagship bait, The Catalyst, on the other, to see how they compare. I know the water well, know some of the productive spots, so dropped both baits onto the area, and attached a small pva bag of just four matching boilies to each, and that was it; no pre-baiting, no additional offerings, just a mouthful of each to see what happened. I made a mental note to keep an eye on other anglers too, just to see what they were catching, and how my baits would compare… An hour in, and I’d seen nothing landed across the lake. As I watched an angler wander up the bank, I had a single bleep on the Smokey Jack rod, and as I was hovering next to it, decided to lift the rod rather than leave it to develop; fish on! A pleasing curve in the rod indicated a decent double figure carp, which quickly came to the net. With the fish safely unhooked, photographed, and returned, I put the rod back out with another small bag of freebies, and tightened up to await the next fish. I still hadn’t seen any other fish come out, so retired to the bivvy to tie a few rigs… BEEEEEP! The other alarm went off, the rod tip fairly hooped around, and I leapt from my chair to connect with another fish. This one fought with the typical tip rattling tussle of a stillwater barbel, and eventually, I lifted a nice fish of around 7lb onto the mat; I was very pleased with that! I lowered the barbel back into the water, and sat with it for a few minutes as it rested in the sling, before watching it swim away strongly to fight again… One fish on each bait… A visitor to my peg told me that he had landed five catfish, and three carp during a busy night, but hadn’t had anything else during the daylight hours. As we chatted, the Smokey Jack bait was taken, and another double figure carp netted; that made it three fish, and I still hadn’t seen anyone else catch…was it a wonder bait, or was I getting all the luck? Things quietened as expected in the middle of the day, but as the wind picked up to put a ripple on the water, The Catalyst picked off another carp, and so did the Smokey Jack, and both also tempted a couple of bream apiece too. Other anglers opposite had packed up, fishless, and were making their way back to the car park, so I decided that one more fish do me

before I too, packed up. Neil came to chat. He had witnessed my fish, and explained that although he also knew the water well, having fished it for ten years, he hadn’t had a bite, and wondered what was making the difference. I explained that if I told him, I would have to kill him, but after a few minutes banter, I showed him exactly what I was using; I don’t believe in ‘Secret Squirrel’, if I’m catching, and you’re not, I’d like to see you catch too. It turns out that Neil was another of those chaps you love to meet on the bank; polite, pleasant, and good company, and we shared ideas for half an hour before he wandered back to his mate on the far bank, and I continued fishing… After a final carp, (one last cast!) I had one last rip-roaring run, a real fishing cliché screamer, and snatched the rod up to try and turn whatever was heading for the island into open water. After a couple of minutes, I had sight of a much bigger barbel, and quickly adjusted my position to grab my net and make some room to land it. Disaster! As it approached the net, the fish dived under my other back leaded line, turned over the top of it, and got into the reeds, where it craftily transferred the hook to a reed stem and disappeared! (How do they do that?) I was left to sort the resulting mess, and it seemed appropriate to pack up. Between the two rods, I’d had five carp, a barbel, lost a barbel, and had four bream; everyone else had blanked, except for Neil who had claimed a small bream. Draw your own conclusions from that statistic, but I know what I think, and I’m no super angler… As I walked off the fishery, I stopped to talk to Neil, handed him a pva bag of four Smokey Jack boilies, and one for the hook (never tell me I’m not generous!) and asked him to let me know if he caught in the hour he had remaining. A day later, he contacted me by text to tell that sadly, he hadn’t caught, but had enjoyed our chat, and would keep me up to

date on any further catches for my Carp-Talk magazine columns. I was disappointed that he hadn’t caught, as surely that would have underlined the effectiveness of Smokey Jack, but I saw enough to convince me that Spotted Fin are onto another winner with the new bait, and I’ll be using it from now on… but then I’m no bait tester, did I mention that?
