ARTS CHARITIES JOIN FORCES TO GET YOUNG PEOPLE TAKING PART IN ARTS Cast, Doncaster’s flagship theatre and darts (Doncaster Community Arts) will be delivering exciting artistic opportunities for children and young people as part of a newly funded project. Focusing on children who have less access to the arts, darts and Cast will work with EXPECT Youth to connect up local children and young people with arts activities over the next two years. This new youth arts programme will link with Doncaster Music Education Hub, the South Yorkshire Dance Partnership, Doncaster Cultural Education Partnership (DCEP) and will be influenced by local young people

themselves to create new opportunities that have a wide-ranging impact. Helen Jones, Assistant Director for darts ‘We’re thrilled to have secured the investment from Arts Council and Expect Youth. It’ll help us, in partnership with Cast, to put on a fantastic range of high quality free creative opportunities for Doncaster Children and Young People. We’re designing the programme with children and young people and have already been getting creative in our Summer sessions. They’ve created an ‘Imaginary Instrument Factory’ using circuit boards and midi wizardry, to design and build fantastical electronic

instruments, got hands on in outdoor sculpture workshops, and even created giant glow in the dark drawings. I’m so looking forwards to giving more children and young people the opportunity to share their ideas and take part in a range of amazing experiences.’ Over the next two years Cast, darts and local partners aim to raise the profile of the arts offer for Doncaster children and young people, build on local aspirations and promote physical and mental wellbeing. This funding will also support the delivery of nationally recognised arts qualification Arts Award with young people across the borough and

will ensure that there is a guaranteed offer of arts experiences available to all 0-19 year-olds living locally. To kick-start this work, families attending DNweekeND (9-10 Sep) will be able to achieve their ‘Discover Arts Award’. A limited number of free packs will be available outside Cast during the weekend festival to guide locals on a creative journey around the town to learn new skills and have fun. Just look out for the Arts Award banners to get involved. Head of Participation Sarah Clough comments: ‘This new partnership will support a range of us working with young people across the borough

to weave the Arts Award into what we do in a meaningful, sustainable and impactful way. I’m hugely looking forward to a more joined up approach to offering high quality arts provision across the borough and by uniting our visions and provision to this offer, they will ensure as many of Doncaster’s children and young people benefit and enjoy brilliant arts opportunities’ Arts Council England, through Bridge Organisation and Creative Development Agency IVE have invested £50,000 into this transformative two-year programme, with an additional £50,000 matched by the Expect Youth.

ARE YOU DOING YOUR BIT TO PROMOTE CYCLING IN SHEFFIELD? Sheffield employers and employees are being asked to sign up to ‘Love to Ride – Cycle September’. The programme aims to engage at least 100 local workplaces and over 1,000 individuals in a friendly prizewinning competition to ride the most miles in September. Recent data shows 62 companies in South Yorkshire have signed up to ‘Love to Ride’ with over 470 individuals taking part. It is estimated that around 30 businesses in

South Yorkshire actively promote cycling to work and public health and activity chiefs have spoken out about the long-lasting benefits that could be achieved if this figure was trebled. Council transport officers say funding for cycling schemes is easier to justify when cycling numbers increase, as they have in South Yorkshire over recent years. Funding for the ‘Cycle September’ programme came from a £7.5m Access Fund for Sustainable Travel grant from the government,

the largest awarded in the country this year. Jo Pearce, Sheffield Council’s head of Physical Activity and Sport, has been cycling to work for seven years, and says it’s safe, fun and practical. “Being inactive is such a terrible thing for people, so I think building activity into your working day is the key,” she said. “I’m working and I’ve got a little girl, and it’s hard to fit in going to the gym. So I take my daughter to nursery and then bike into work, which is a far less stressful journey

for us than driving, and it’s great for me and my little girl to start our day in an active way.” “It’s very simple: the more people cycle, the more people cycle,” said Rosie Frazer of Love to Ride. “If there are more cyclists out and about, it makes drivers more aware of them, it makes the roads safer and less congested for everyone, and people thinking about riding a bike say: ‘Well if she or he can do it, so can I!’” Cycle September is part of South Yorkshire’s Inmotion! programme

of Sustainable Travel initiatives, and is also part of the MoveMore campaign to make Sheffield, The Outdoor City, the UK’s most active city by 2020. Participants and companies signing up for cycle September will competing for prizes including cinema tickets, meals at local restaurants, bikes and accessories. West Yorkshire are taking part too, so the competitive element will also pitch Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley against Leeds, Wakefield, Bradford and Huddersfield. MONSTERS, CHICKEN AND MUCH MORE WIN A £50 MEAL VOUCHER PLUS A BOTTLE OF WINE AT CLUCK ON SHEFFIELD PARKWAY

It’s hard to believe that two years have passed already since the restaurant Cluck opened on the junction of Sheffield Parkway and Price of Wales Road. Since that time, the menu has grown with more choice than ever before and more and more people pop back every week. The founder, Simon Beattie says “We didn’t want to be just another chain restaurant, with a huge menu where pretty much everything is made off site and then just reheated; we wanted to make sure almost everything on our menu is made from scratch, right here in our kitchen”. He added, “it wasn’t easy, when we added ribs to our menu last year our chefs spent time trying to get the marinade just right; and we are probably one of the few places in Sheffield where you can get so many dishes which are made from scratch on site“. As the name suggests, chicken is the main item on the menu, with the rotisserie chicken and the chicken pies being the best sellers. All main dishes also come with a free side, with as many top ups as you can eat. “Over the last two years, I shudder to think how many bags of potatoes we have used, as we make all our chips, roasts, jackets and mash from scratch too!”. A few months ago Cluck introduced the newest item on the menu, the Monster Cluck. Eating challenges prove quite popular these days, but no person has ever managed to finish the Monster Cluck on their own. It comes with 4 slices of steak, 3 different types of whole chicken breast, bacon,

haloumi, fried egg, hashbrown and more. It’s so big Cluck had to buy bigger plates just to serve it on. Simon sighed “it’s a shame no-one has managed to finish it, we have set aside a wall of fame, but it’s pretty empty right now!” Cluck is open all day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. On Sundays there’s an all you can eat buffet breakfast in the morning, and a special Sunday roast menu from noon. The homemade Yorkshire puddings are quite popular! Although Cluck is a restaurant, it’s also become a hub of the local business community, and they host three different business networking groups, meeting 5 times a month, as well as special evenings like a Physic Swirl that also prove very popular.

THE “MOVE MORE” CHALLENGE TO SHEFFIELD PEOPLE How do you usually spend your hourlong lunch break? For a majority of working people, lunch breaks are usually spent being glued to their desks come wind, rain or shine. Professor Rob Copeland of Sheffield Hallam University and Director of the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine is leading a city-wide initiative called Move More that aims to transform Sheffield into the most active city in the UK by 2020. The National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine is a London 2012 Olympic legacy project that brings together researchers and a host of partners to try and create a culture of physical activity in the city. The project aims to make it easier for people to be physically active as part of everyday life, and enjoy all the health, social and economic benefits that brings. Professor Copeland is now encouraging Sheffield to get outside and make time for walking by providing advice on the many health benefits brisk walking can bring. Just 20 minutes of brisk walking per day can improve physical and mental wellbeing, helping prevent obesity, heart disease and type 2 diabetes as well as combat stress. Professor Copeland said: “If they could create a pill to prescribe to everyone to make them healthier, it would do exactly what brisk walking does.” Heart A brisk walk will increase your heart rate and make it work harder to ensure blood and oxygen can get to all the parts of

SPORTING CHANCE PROJECT

The project is run by Volunteering Matters and is supported by The Peoples Postcode Lottery. They have funding to run social and sporting activities for men 50+ and our aims are to reduce isolation and increase wellbeing in this group. the body. A heart that works harder will eventually become stronger. The heart is a muscle. If you train it by going for a brisk walk, it becomes more efficient. The potential benefits are huge, including lower blood pressure. Walking can also reduce the amount of bad cholesterol in your blood. This helps to reduce your risk of heart disease by helping to keep your arteries healthy and prevent the dangers of clogging. Stomach One of the most obvious ways that walking can make you healthier is by helping you to lose weight. Just walking briskly for 20 minutes can burn 100 calories, depending on your weight, and walking briskly for 45 minutes should be enough to make your body start burning fat reserves, which can speed up weight loss. Walking also helps to improve insulin sensitivity and our ability to cope with sugar, which is another way to offset the risk of diabetes. Skin Moderate exercise can increase the flow of blood to the skin, keeping your skin cells nourished and healthy looking. This also helps to remove waste products such as free radicals, which, over time can affect your skin as wrinkles, sagging, and roughness. Bones Bones and muscles both become stronger when muscles push and tug during weight bearing physical activity. There is also a strong link between walking and reduction

in musculoskeletal disorders, such as lower back pain, which is often a result of sitting down for long periods. Cells A study in the medical journal The Lancet in 2012 revealed that walking could cut the number of breast cancers by 18% and colon cancer by 19%. This is because cancer can be caused by inflammation in the cells that make up our body. Walking helps to reduce that swelling and the resulting risk of disease. Within the cells of your body you have mitochondria. They are like your little batteries. They are constantly being charged within your cells, ready to be used. If you are not active, that energy is not being used and that creates inflammation in the cell. We know that is the mechanism through which a lot of these diseases are caused. Head Not only is walking good for your physical health, it also has benefits for your mental health and your mood too. Walking releases the body’s feel-good hormones, known as endorphins, which make us feel healthier and happier. Regular exercise also helps to control the amount of stress hormone cortisol that our body produces after exercise. For people who don’t regularly exercise, activity is perceived by the body as a stressor and therefore causes the release of cortisol. Through regular activity, this effect is decreased meaning that you have a better response to stress and require less cortisol release. This is important because if the amount of cortisol in your body remains too high for too long, it can affect your memory, lower your immunity and increase weight gain, blood pressure, cholesterol and heart disease. One of the effects of stress is that it can make you look and feel older. Walking can reduce your cortisol levels, which can de-stress you, making you feel like you have more energy and feel younger.”

A TASTE OF BAVARIA COMES FINALISTS READY TO SHEFFIELD THIS WEEKEND TO ROCK THE O2! Sheffields own Oktoberfest is coming back for the third year with exclusive beer, schnitzels and lederhosen. 4,000 guests are expected for a three day festival at Devonshire Green. Get ready for Sheffield’s Oktoberfest, a three days celebration of all Bavarian things with thousands of guests. Sheffields Oktoberfest will see a huge 1,000 seats BierTent set up at Devonshire Green with

a world of lederhosen, dirndl, schnitzel and true German hospitality. Over one weekend from Thursday the 25.08 - 27. August. This year we’re excited to tell that we have a wonderful beer garden outside the tent. Oktoberfest revellers will also be able to enjoy the Oompah band playing classic German music and British rock and pop songs for a singa-long. We have brewed our own Oktoberfest Beer, and transported it all the

way from Bavaria. Oktoberfest director Carsten Raun says: “It’s going to be the party of the year in Sheffield. We will bring a 1,000 seater tent to Devonshire Green. The tent will be in the Bavarian colours blue and white, the staff wears Dirndls and Lederhosen so you should get a feeling of being in Munich in the middle of Sheffield. We bring the band, food and beer all the way from Germany so

its really going to be something special. Our beer is a wonderful dark lager with 5% and produced just for us in Bavaria under the German purity law, so fresh and tasty.“ Oktoberfest promises the true German Oktoberfest spirit in Sheffield and we are looking forward to share it with our guests. SHEFFIELD’S HAPPIEST PLACE IS A STROLL IN THE PEAK DISTRICT A walk in the Peak District has been voted as Sheffield’s ultimate "happy place", according to a new study. This research looked into places in the UK, which evoke special memories and ultimately make us “happy”. It found that, for people in Sheffield, a pub lunch in the Cotswolds or ice creams on Brighton Pier closely followed. Hiking in the Lake District and fossil hunting on the Jurassic Coast completed the top five happy spots associated with holidays. Researchers from SACO, The Serviced Apartment Company, which offers serviced apartments in Sheffield, polled UK holidaymakers in a national survey and revealed almost half (43 per cent) people from Sheffield believe there is "no place like home" when it comes to holidays. This is reflected in their choice of where to go with Yorkshire chosen as their top holiday destination, followed by Cornwall and the Lake District. Must-do things on a British summer break that make the people from Sheffield feel happy include eating traditional food, such as fish and chips (61 per cent) and a pub lunch (59 per cent). Other activities on the holiday checklist included paddling in the sea (39 per cent), playing arcade games (36 per cent) and

building sandcastles (34 per cent). A more honest 29 per cent said it was a must to get blown about on a windy beach and 30 per cent of those polled said, you haven’t experienced a true British holiday until you have been caught in torrential rain. A spokesperson for SACO, said: “People in Sheffield know just how lucky they are to have the beautiful Peak District on their doorstep. A walk through the hills is incredibly invigorating and there’s plenty to do in the area for the whole family. “It just goes to prove that there’s no need to travel long distances to find a happy place for yourself and the family, either for a day trip or a longer holiday.” More than 80 per cent of people in Sheffield said some of their fondest memories of being a child are when they were holidaying in Britain - and 62 per cent are trying to replicate those memories now for their own children. Being able to get home if needed (48 per cent), bringing back childhood memories (38 per cent) and being able to take the family dog along (28 per cent) were also listed as benefits of the staycation, as well as it being more affordable (41 per cent). Interestingly, the research showed that a typical seven-day break in the UK would set you back £699, compared to £1,471 if you went abroad from Sheffield. Two thirds (64 per cent) claimed if you could always guarantee the weather, they would never go abroad.

RESULT HARSH ON MILLERS MILLERS chief Paul Warne believed that individual errors were behind his side’s narrow defeat at the hands of Peterborough United. Kieffer Moore’s fourth goal of the season looked set to earn Warne’s side their first away points of the season after he cancelled out Jack Marriott’s opener but Marriott’s second goal of the afternoon dashed any Millers hopes of a share of the spoils when he latched onto Semi Ajayi’s error to loop the ball over ‘keeper Richard O’Donnell with the decisive winner. Speaking to the assembled press corps afterwards, Warne believed that the result was a harsh one on his side, who always looked a constant threat at the ABAX Stadium during an exciting tussle.

“It was end-to-end and I thought there would be goals in the game,” Warne admitted. “Prior to the game, I thought it would be a 3-2 or a 4-3. In the first half, it was a pretty even match although I was not best pleased with how we played in the first half. In the second, we played a lot better but a couple of individual errors massively cost us a couple of goals.” In a see-saw first half, Marriott crashed an effort against the underside of the crossbar before Posh had ‘keeper Jonathan Bond to thank for a superb double save to deny Ryan Williams and Jamie Proctor before Moore drilled an effort against the upright. Marriott was proving a thorn in the Millers side and he opened the scoring, just minutes into the second half, as he squeezed a low

effort past O’Donnell before Moore levelled matters with a towering header. “We got back into the game and I thought we were the only team going to win,” Warne added. “We were in the ascendency and made attacking changes, to try and win the game. “I set the team up the same every week and I think we are a good attacking side. I don’t come here to sit back and play for draws. I set the lads up to get the ball out wide and get crosses in the box and I think we did that. I don’t think we played with enough intensity in the first half, but we did in the second. We created enough chances to win the game three times over.” With the game in the balance, Proctor had a goal chalked off for offside before Marriott’s cool strike turned the game in Posh’s favour- to the disappointment of the Millers boss. “The lads were obviously disappointed in there but they have to take responsibility for what they do,” Warne added. “I’m pleased with the performance. I thought the fans were brilliant and loud. They clapped the team off and I think they appreciate they have seen an exciting game of football but unfortunately we were at the wrong end of a 2-1 scoreline, which I thought was a bit harsh on us.”

ADAPTING TO ROWE TAKES POSITIVES MAY PROFESSIONAL LIFE

Midfielder Tommy Rowe wants Rovers to take the positives from the 3-3 draw with Blackpool at the Keepmoat Stadium. Goals from John Marquis, Alfie May and Rowe was not enough for Rovers to take all three points, but Rowe insists their hard work will be rewarded in future games. “There were a lot of positives to take from the first half, we stuck to our gameplan and the goal was an example of what we have been working all week on in training,” he said. “We have been working a lot on moving the ball across, getting shots off and I was delighted to see that pay off - and hopefully we can keep that going in future games. “It’s two points dropped for us the Gillingham game was the, same and in all four games we have played this season we have been on top and you want to be rewarded for that.” Rovers face Hull City before a trip to the Cherry Red Records Stadium to face AFC Wimbledon in Sky Bet League One and Rowe is targeting a league win against the Dons to

The 24-year-old came off the bench to score “I think we have started the season well, I the side’s third goal, and the striker looks desthink we probably deserved two more points tined to start against Hull City in the Carabao than we have at the moment,” said Ferguson. Striker Alfie May is delighted with his start to the season and is enjoying the change to his daily working life. Plucked from non-league Hythe Town in January, May has gone on to be a big hit with the Rovers’ fans so far, with three goals in as many games. “When I was in non-league I was a builder and when you play on a Tuesday night for an away game, you’re in work at half five the next morning after getting back at half 12,” said May. “You don’t enjoy it at all and it’s not nice, but that was work and you’ve got to go, but now I wake up and I’m going to play the football that I love and its good fun. “I worked for my brother’s company and I worked with my best mate too, they text me every day to see how training was and they want me to succeed because they know how much it means to me.” Making the step up from non-league has been something that May has grasped with both hands, and after his impressive performances so far this season, he is relishing the chance to face the Tigers at the Keepmoat on Tuesday night. “We’ve played Championship teams in pre-season and we’ve worked on it in training, but we’ve got great talent in the squad and we can go out and win this,” said May. “Everybody would like to be starting, and when you sit there and watch your mates doing well, and even if I come off the bench I’ve got to work hard and put pressure on. “The players Hull have got have played in the highest level possible and it’ll be a huge test but we’ve got the quality to go out and win.”

The County Senior League returned to action on Saturday for the 2017/18 season. The league takes a slightly different form this term with a combined Second Division taking the place of the previous two regionalised North and South leagues. The opening weekend featured a short fixture lst of nine games across the three divisions. Premier Division Swinton Athletic finished second last season, and set about straight away improving on that result. They beat Denaby Main 8-0 at Tickhill Square. It was an opening day to remember for both Ryan Doxey and Justin Greenwood, who both scored hat-tricks to help Swinton’s cause. Liam Beevers and Tommy Needham were also on target for Swinton. It was a day to forget for the both of the Denaby clubs, as Denaby United also conceded eight, losing 8-1 at home to Oughtibridge WMFC. Justin Westoby was in fine form for Oughtibridge, scoring three times. The surprise of the day came at Millar’s Walk, where 2015/16 Premier Division Winners Frecheville lost 3-2 to newly promoted South Kirkby Colliery. Houghton Main ended last season with three consecutive wins, and they looked to replicate that form this term, with a 3-1 win over Millmoor Juniors at Grange Park. Division One Both of the Division Two winners from last year had successful opening days. Division Two North winners Dodworth Miners Welfare were impressive 4-1 winners at home against AFC Dronfield. Division Two South winners Sheffield Medics were also in victorious, winning 1-0 away against High Green Villa. Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 narrowly missed out on promotion last season, but they stumbled at the first hurdle this weekend, as they were beaten 4-3 by Brinsworth Whitehill in a thriller at Chaucer School. Division Two Manor Hotel and Thurscroft Miners Institute are both new to league this season, and they met each other on Saturday at Muglet Lane. Goals from Rudi Crabtree (2), Brandan Hopkins, Tom Salt and Ryan Welsh gave Manor Hotel a 5-3 win, as they opened their account with some flair. Boynton Sports returned to the County Senior League in style, with a 7-1 win over Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Development at Concord Park.

BLADES VICTORIOUS IN LOCAL DERBY Billy Sharp scored the goal that earned the Blades victory in the first South Yorkshire derby of season. The skipper fired over a Jack O’Connell cross in an impressive encounter, which saw United’s Leon Clarke and Barnsley’s Angus MacDonald sent off. Boss Wilder made two changes to his starting line-up for the lunchtime game. Stearman was ruled out with a hamstring problem and

Wright took over, whilst Duffy was preferred to Carruthers in midfield. The pace early was frenetic and the impetus with United as boss Wilder had his side fired up for the derby. The home team won a numerous corners and whipped in crosses from both sides, whilst chances were created. On six minutes, following a quick throw, a low Stevens cross was perfect for Sharp but goalkeeper Davies

was ideally positioned to block. Soon after, a free-kick on the edge of the box saw Duffy’s shot deflected over. Barnsley’s only noteworthy effort saw Hammill pull a shot wide after a breakaway but the Blades deservedly grabbed the lead on 17 minutes. O’Connell overlapped on the left and provided the cross for SHARP to beat Davies on this occasion, the Tykes goalkeeper failing to keep the ball

out after scrambling across his goal. The mid-section of the half saw Barnsley get back into the game as the early pace dwindled. Chances, though, dried up with both sides guilty of wasting the final pass in potentially dangerous areas. The action heated back up just before the interval, however, when Clarke and MacDonald chased Fleck’s through ball. The duo tangled and squared up to each other and after referee Robinson consulted with one of his assistants, the Blades striker and Barnsley skipper were both shown the red card. Before the half-time whistle United got back on top, with Duffy heavily involved and he laid off to Fleck, whose shot from the edge of the box was blocked by Jackson, just in front of his own goalkeeper. There was one last Blades chance before the break but O’Connell

BLADES WERE EXCELLENT

Chris Wilder described Saturday’s performance in the victory over Barnsley as ‘excellent’ and he thought his side fully deserved all three points. Reflecting a keenly contested South Yorkshire derby, the Blades boss remarked:

“I thought we were excellent and when you win you love an early kick-off because that’s our day done and dusted. “Seriously though I thought we were very good. On the back of defeat at Cardiff I really thought this was a game we could get after. “I’m not a manager who

comes out and says it should have been six, seven or eight because that’s unrealistic, but I thought we were the dominant force. “It was only towards the end that Barnsley made some bold decisions to get some players up the pitch, but honestly the game should have been

BRAMALL LANE FORTRESS WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH Sheffield United might have been outbattled in Middlesbrough, and outclassed in Cardiff, but a strong start at the Lane could prove vitally important as the season progresses. Two wins from two home fixtures sets the tone for the season and outlines to future travellers that United will be very hard to beat on their own turf. I would have liked to have been at the Barnsley match, taking up my usual seat in the kop, but a stomach bug kept me away. The highlights from the game, in which Jamal Blackman was rarely seen, confirmed that United will have tougher games this season. Blade boss Chris Wilder will need the backing of the board though if his side are to turn the Lane into a

fortress. The incomings have slowed to a dramatic halt in recent weeks. Wilder has stated his intent to get at least two or three new bodies in at Shirecliffe before the window shuts, but little progress appears to have been made. A forward would be my priority, but maybe there’s a reason I’m not Blades boss. The side has managed two league goals so far this season, both goals

courtesy of Billy Sharp. United will need to find more goals if they are to survive comfortably in the second tier. The suspension to Leon Clarke will hopefully allow chance for Ched Evans to return to match sharpness. Evans’ early signs against Walsall were promising, coming on to change the game. The visit of Leicester City and Derby County this week will certainly put the Bramall Lane fortress to test.

done and dusted before half-time. “Their goalkeeper was really good and he had to work hard. One of my criticisms is we haven’t worked the opposition’s defence or goalkeeper enough in the last two games. “Yes it was a Middlesbrough and then

headed Duffy’s free-kick just wide. Barnsley made a double change at the interval but Duffy remained a constant thorn in the visiting team’s side, although it was O’Connell who tried his luck with two long-range shots. Duffy dragged a shot wide just before the hour, following a move that involved five of his team-mates, whilst the visiting side’s first opportunity of the second half saw Potts head a near-post corner over. Potts tried to level once again on 62 minutes but his blast from the edge of the box was blocked by Wright. The Blades were quickly back on the offensive. Basham overlapped down the right and his low cross saw Sharp get a touch but he was unable to turn the ball towards goal. A tiring Duffy received a standing ovation when he was replaced by

Brooks, who was quickly embroiled in the action. Brooks beat Pinnock but his shot was blocked and then the young substitute went closer still on 70 minutes. From a Stevens cross, Brooks beat his man at the near post but Davies saved with his backside and the ball spun along the goal-line before nudging the far post. Davies saved again soon after, just managing to tip over O’Connell’s header from Fleck’s corner and Sharp also received a great reception when he made way for Evans with 15 minutes to go. Late on Barnsley tried to push the Blades back but shots from Potts and Hammill were wild and Ugbo’s attempt to turn in the box, following a cross from the right, was marshalled by the dependable Wright as United chalked up a clean sheet and three more valuable points.

Cardiff but we have quality at the top of the pitch and we need to show that and do better, we did that.” On the red cards shown to Leon Clarke and Tykes skipper Angus MacDonald, Wilder added: “I spoke to Leon, their boy chucked a punch at Leon, he has grappled with him and then their player has gone to headbutt him. “I don’t like to see

players go down, but maybe for an experience player Leon should have walked away, but it is an initial reaction I suppose.

DUFFY ON WIN

Mark Duffy felt the Blades were full value for their victory over neighbours Barnsley on Saturday. Speaking in the aftermath of the success over the Tykes, Duffy remarked: “We started really well and put them under a lot of pressure. Their goalkeeper has made two or three really good saves, especially the one early on from Billy. “But the Gaffer told us before the game to be relentless, to keep doing the right things, to keep the tempo high and we deservedly got our noses in front. “We could have been two or three up at half-time, we were the dominant force. We could still be more clinical in the final third but we were much better.”

The experienced performer added: “I don’t normally praise individuals but I thought Jake (Wright) was outstanding at the

other end and made a real difference, especially towards the end when we were having to put bodies on the line.”

FLETCHER GOAL GIVE OWLS CAPITAL GAINS Steven Fletcher’s first goal of the season at Fulham was enough to give Wednesday their maiden win of the new campaign. Fletcher struck a sweet second half volley to ensure the Owls returned from the capital with maximum points after

soaking up earlier pressure from the hosts. Fulham missed two clear chances and were made to pay as the visitors seized control and made their possession count. It was Wednesday that threatened first from a corner that saw Gary Hooper glance over

the crossbar before Fletcher was denied at the last following a Jack Hunt feed. Then on 20 minutes, Fulham missed the best opportunity of the first half when a deep corner found its way to Sone Aluko at the back post but the wideman could only head over from close

range. Moments later Ryan Sessegnon was a whisker away from converting Rui Fonte’s dangerous cross from the right as the hosts upped the ante. Stefan Johansen was next to try his luck, this time firing narrowly over the top on the half volley and the same player finished the opening period with a firm header that evaded Keiren Westwood and the bar. The Owls resumed with more zip about their play and Jack Hunt’s low cross caused problems in the Fulham backline. Fletcher was thwarted

from the resulting corner but the Londoners passed up a golden chance on the counter when Sessegnon got in behind the defence only to shoot wide. Wednesday responded with a Barry Bannan drive that David Button parried into the path of Fletcher who slammed home but the flag was raised. But there was no denying the Scotland international and Fletcher broke the deadlock on 63 minutes. Adam Reach burst into space down the left flank and cut back for Fletcher to smash past Button on the

volley. Fulham were stung into action and Neeskens Kabano forced Westwood into a near post save before Button saved from Fletcher as the Owls sought to put the game out of reach. The Cottagers pressed in the closing stages but never truly threatened and Carlos Carvalhal’s side held tight to the points.

THE DIFFERENCE IS THE WIN WE KNOW OUR QUALITIES After posting an impressive performance at Fulham that matched home displays against QPR and Sunderland, Carlos Carvalhal said the primary difference was victory. Wednesday recorded their first win of the season at Craven Cottage, with Steven Fletcher’s goal the difference. Carvalhal said: “I am calm, completely calm, because I knew we would start to win games. “We played well against Queens Park Rangers, we played well against

Sunderland and we played well today against Fulham, one of the strongest sides of the competition. “The big difference here is the win. In my opinion we should have won already this season but we did not and that is the reality. “So today we came here to play our football, to fight for every ball and win for the fans, who were again fantastic. “They gave big applause to the players and me before the game and I am happy for them today because they will travel home with the win.” Carlos added: “The

only thing that would have caused me to worry was if we had played like Preston for some games, and even if we won those games. “But I knew this was not the brand we have tried to build, that was not my Sheffield Wednesday. “In the last three games we have seen my Sheffield Wednesday. We did not play any better today than we played against Queens Park Rangers and Sunderland but we got the win. “Now we look forward to the next game.”

Steven Fletcher says the Owls’ maiden win of the Championship season at Fulham underlines the squad’s qualities. The Owls soaked up early pressure from the hosts but stood strong throughout at Craven Cottage. Momentum swung in favour of Carlos Carvalhal’s side and it was Fletcher’s stunning second half strike that sealed a superb travelling triumph. He told swfc.co.uk: “We know our qualities, we know

we can give any team in this league a game if we play to our best ability. “I thought we did that at Fulham and we played very well. “They overloaded the middle of the park at the start but we switched it up a little bit and took the game to them and had the best chances I think.” It was of course the Scotland international’s second goal of the season, but first in the Championship, with his previous goal coming in the Carabao Cup victory

over Chesterfield. Fletcher fired home on the volley from Adam Reach’s cut back in front of the strong travelling contingent behind the goal and he added: “I’ve caught it on the volley, I’ve caught it sweet and it’s nice to get off the mark. “You kind of know when it comes off your foot if it is going to be a good one, it felt nice when I hit it and I knew it was going to be in the back of the net or at least go close anyway.”

ANGLER’S CORNER

groundbait, but for the sake of cost, I had mixed cheap supermarket corn with the pellets, as I knew I’d probably need a fair amount to keep with Clint Walker fish feeding, and I wanted to match the colour of the free offerings with the hookbait, a Spotted I’ve had another good week on the bank, Fin Classic Corn wafter, so once I got some bait getting amongst a few decent carp, and trying out, the method feeder followed, and was left to out some newly released tackle from Sonik settle. My first fish, a chunky double figure carp, Sports… came within 10 minutes, the second 10 minutes I wasn’t sure I’d get much time by the water after that, and the third, well, you get the idea. this week, a combination of editorial deadlines, waiting for deliveries, and other things, curtailing I was catching consistently, a double figure fish every time, but I was getting through the feed at a the number of spare hours, but I did eventually frightening rate! After each fish, a pet scoop full get out for a short time, in search of carp, on a Staffordshire club water. When time is tight, I try of freebies went out on the spot, just to keep the fish grubbing about! to visit this particular venue as a bite is almost After a couple of hours, I noticed George pack guaranteed; I say ‘almost’, it very nearly didn’t away his kit, and return to the car park; sometime turn out that way! later, the bailiff came to chat, and he mentioned I arrived, and found the car park surprisingly that George hadn’t had a bite at all which was empty, but as I unloaded the van, George turned a surprise indeed, as I’d really fancied that up. George is 90 years old, has suffered the ravages of various ailments, has bits missing, but particular spot, with the wind pushing hard into the corner, and felt somewhat guilty for putting still keeps getting out on the bank and showing George in there! My fish however, continued others how to do it. He is a lovely chap, and I to climb the line, and I eventually finished with sincerely hope I’m still fishing at his age! We 15 doubles, a couple of bream, lost a few fish, discussed choice of pegs, and I offered to let and had 5 barbel, including a fair old chunk of George take my intended peg as it wasn’t too far for him to walk, and I said I’d move further down a fish to complete a good day. As I went back to the van, I spoke to another angler, in a peg just a the bank. He agreed, we parted company, and I couple away from George, and he hadn’t had a went off to set up my single rod… bite either, despite being there all day, so I really As I pieced together the carbon, I chucked in a was pleased to have caught when others hadn’t; handful of sweetcorn, and mixed pellets which sometimes things just go your way! had been soaked in Spotted Fin Catalyst syrup, then dusted with groundbait from the same stable, Later in the week, I had another short window of opportunity, so hung up my usual Sonik Sports into the margin. Within seconds, like hungry SK3 XTR rods, and Tournos 10000 reels, and piranhas, a few carp moved in, and hoovered up substituted them with the Vader X 2.75lb test the bait before scooting off in search of more; I curve rods, and 8000 series reels, which I’d been couldn’t set up fast enough! As usual, I start my sent to evaluate, review and photograph. Once day here by using a small method feeder, with groundbait and tiny pellets crushed around it, then again, I only had a few hours, so it was more of a ‘first impression’ look, but I still tempted a carp hide an 8mm wafter within the method ball. This is swung out less than a rod length from the bank, which was enough to put a bend in the new rods, and the line left slack, so it doesn’t spook the carp and allow me to see how the reels performed. I have to say, that initial feelings are good, and when they come back on their patrols. that as carbon rod blanks have developed, and I often feed a particle mix, where others use come down in price, these will be big sellers. I already know how many units have been sold since release, and it’s an awful lot, and if my first look is anything to go by, with good reason. They offer a quality blank, subtle graphics, and You will be after a vist to decent quality, but without the big money price tag usually associated with such good kit. The our friendly peaceful package is perfectly balanced, and I can’t wait self-contained luxury to tell you more when I’ve put them through flats on Tansley Moor their paces! SHEFFIELD enjoyed a super Sunday with a comprehensive 55-35 win over Edinburgh at Owlerton. The Window Centre Tigers marched on to their 10th straight win with a powerful performance against the Monarchs. No.1 Josh Grajczonek struck a faultless, fourride maximum whilst Kyle Howarth and Lasse Bjerre also bagged double figures to lead the charge. But they received plenty of support from throughout the side as all seven riders chipped in with solid contributions. It was another convincing display from Simon Stead’s in-form side to move four points clear at the top of the SGB Championship table. And Stead was delighted to keep their momentum going with a crushing victory on home shale. Said Stead: “The pressure is on every meeting now because we just want to keep this winning run going. “It was another strong performance and everyone has chipped in yet again, so we’re very happy with the way things played out. “Everyone is high on confidence, but we know we need to keep working hard to keep it going.” The Tigers will be back in action as they host Scunthorpe at Owlerton on Thursday (7.30).
