TOP DJ ANNOUNCES DATE FOR LADIES DAY

DJ, model and entertainer Vernon Kay has been announced as the guest celebrity to appear at the hugely popular Ladies Day during the William Hill St. Leger Festival on Thursday 14th September. Vernon is set to replace Mark Wright who has had to pull out due to unforeseen filming commitments. Abby Chandler, Head of Marketing at Doncaster Racecourse said: “We’re disappointed Mark Wright won’t be able

to now join us on our fabulous Ladies Day however we wish him the very best. We’re extremely excited to welcome back Vernon Kay to Doncaster as he’s a firm favourite with our visitors and will certainly know how to entertain the crowds on Ladies Day!” Known for his TV presenting roles on favourites shows such as ‘All Star Family Fortunes’, ‘Beat the Star’, ‘Lets Get Gold’ and the ‘Whole 19 Yards’, Vernon is also a talented sports pundit

and radio DJ having worked at Radio One and Radio X. Vernon will perform a ninety minute DJ set straight after the day’s racing on the Hallam FM Champagne lawn for County Enclosure customers. “Vernon is a fun and energetic entertainer who knows how we like to party in Doncaster so be prepared for a fun packed evening after racing,” enthused Abby. Ladies Day is always hugely popular during the St. Leger

Festival and is seen as one of South Yorkshire’s biggest social occasions full of glitz and glamour. It is also well-known for its celebrated Best Dressed Lady competition which sees an array of fine fillies hoping to secure the coveted title along with a plethora of prizes including a holiday. “This year’s competition details will be announced ahead of the day so ladies have as much opportunity as possible to choose a winning outfit,” said Abby. “We already

have one finalist securing her place in the 10 lady lineup. Zoe Mulligan won the Best Dressed Lady title at our Visit Bawtry Spring Ladies Night meeting, so with just nine places left we’re looking forward to seeing some outstanding outfits that are sure to impress our stylish celebrity guest.” In the past, prizes have included a trip to New York, the use of a Mini car for a year and numerous indulgent smaller prizes. Tickets for the St Leger Festival are now on sale. Further details can be found by visiting www. doncaster-racecourse. co.uk/whats-on/ fixture/ladies-day/

FOOTBALL FANS URGED TO SHOW ‘TRUE COLOURS’ ON SUPER SUNDAY It promises to be one of the highlights of Sheffield’s sporting calendar on Sunday 24 September when Wednesday take on United and thousands of runners pull on their trainers for the Sheffield 10K. And fans of both clubs are being urged to kick off the big day by showing their true colours in the Asda Foundation Sheffield 10K which gets underway at 9.30am – leaving enough time for supporters to run the race and then head to Hillsborough for the first Steel City derby in more than five years. It’s an opportunity for fans to run in their team shirts and claim early bragging

rights by beating their rivals to the finish line. Former Wednesday star John Pearson and Ex-Blade Brian Deane are already looking forward to this Super Sunday of sport. John said: “I’m sure it’s going to be a fantastic day and it’s a great opportunity for fans to do the double – complete the run and then take in the match.” The Asda Foundation Sheffield 10K made its debut last year and John said: “It was a really popular run with a great course and tremendous atmosphere. “With it taking place on derby day this year, it makes it even extra special and I’m sure there’ll be a great turn out.”

Brian said: “It really will be a great day for Sheffield. The city already enjoys a fantastic sporting reputation and that can only be enhanced by having two excellent events on one day. “Good luck to everyone taking part in the run – and that includes all Wednesday and United fans.” Councillor Mary Lea, cabinet member for culture, parks and leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “Anticipation is already growing in Sheffield for Super Sunday in September, which is set to be a day of sporting excitement for the whole city. “Whether you’re running

Disney On Ice searches for the next Sheffield Skating Superstar Ahead of the show’s arrival in Sheffield, Disney On Ice launches competition to find one lucky skater to take part in the Fit to Dance pre show. Disney On Ice and IceSheffield last week launched a competition to find the next Sheffield skating superstar, ahead of Disney On Ice presents Passport to Adventure arriving at Sheffield Arena on 15th November. One lucky amateur Sheffield skater will win the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to appear in the Fit to Dance pre-show on Friday 17th November. The Fit to Dance pre-show invites the audience to join Nick and Judy from Zootropolis in a fun, energetic dance routine before the show starts. To launch the competition,

three workshops, hosted by Disney On Ice skaters at IceSheffield, took place where amateur skaters of different abilities showed off their skating skills to enter the competition. They even got a sneak peek of some of the moves from Disney On Ice presents Passport to Adventure. The competition opens to all skaters today on the IceSheffield website https:// siv.org.uk/forms/disneyon-ice-competition,inviting amateur skaters to upload a video of themselves in action until 18th September. Once all entries are received, Disney On Ice and IceSheffield will select the winner based on who captures the fun, sparkle and magic of Disney On Ice the most.

Shaun Lough from IceSheffield commented “We are so excited to be working with Disney On Ice for this competition and help to build the profile of skating here in Sheffield. It was a fantastic experience for our amateur skaters to be able to skate with the professionals today and understand the amount of hard work and determination that goes into skating. We are really looking forward to seeing all the entries!” Disney On Ice presents Passport to Adventure will be skating into Sheffield from 15th to 19th November, taking the audience on a journey through the most memorable Disney destinations with families exploring the magic worlds of Disney’s The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, Peter Pan and Frozen.

SHEFFIELD WALKING FESTIVAL Strap on your boots and take in Sheffield on foot as Sheffield Walking Festival returns 8 - 17 September 2017. Over ten days, the festival presents a host of enjoyable walks for a range of abilities, with plenty to see and discover along the way. The festival celebrates all sides of Sheffield with 34 routes of varying lengths and themes. Take in the city’s varied heritage, fascinating suburbs, hidden outdoor art and eclectic pubs, or enjoy a family themed walk including a picnic and paddle. Several walks will once again showcase the city’s dramatic borders that overlap with the Peak District, while others will shine a light on the city’s more central nature reserves and green spaces. Historical walks follow the Norfolk Heritage Trail, the boundary of Sheffield Deer Park, explore Burngreave, Stannington and the Gleadless Valley, visit the 8 halls of Totley and a variety of old cemeteries. Countryside walks visit Wharncliffe Heath with the trustees, Bolsterstone and the Ewden Valley, follow the course of the great Sheffield Flood, explore the Eastern Moors with rangers from the Peak National Park and the naked people of a lost sculpture trail. For those who like a challenge, there’llbe an opportunity to take on the famous Sheffield Round Walk in reverse and a chance to cover off a decent portion of the newly opened Peak District Boundary Walk. Celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Sheffield Walking Group with a 15 mile Peakland walk and the life of GHB Ward, founder of the Sheffield Clarion Ramblers, on a walk to coincide with the launch of the new Clarion Call book. There’s also unique opportunity for lovers of outdoor photography to hone their skills on a masterclass walk with award winning outdoor photographer and author, Chiz Dakin. And TV presenter, Andrew White, will lead the walk around Ladybower from the first series of his Walks Around Britain programme. However, all those taking part do so at their own risk. Please wear suitable footwear and carry waterproof clothing. Walk leaders will exercise their right to exclude a person who is not properly equipped or who are, in their opinion, not fit enough to complete the walk. Alert the walk leader if you have a specific health condition and advise them of any medication you are carrying. In poor weather the walk may be modified by the leader or, in extreme conditions, it may be cancelled. Walkers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Most walks ask you to bring a packed lunch and a drink. Always carry enough water and snacks for the length of the walk. Booking For safety reasons and the limited number of seats available on some buses, particularly on linear walks, we require advance booking for all our walks. Please book via the individual booking links in the walk titles above or select from the live event listings on our Eventbrite profile page. You will be emailed an electronic ticket for confirmation, but there is no need to bring this with you as the leader will have a list of participants. On the day of your walk, please arrive at the meeting point for public transport 10 minutes ahead of the stated time, as some require a short transfer to the bus stop. All walks will start at the stated time. Walk durations are approximate and depend upon group size and ability.

This summer, the city of Sheffield will host its biggest ever Waterfront Festival, thanks to the combined efforts of waterway charity, the Canal & River Trust and Kelham Island Museum. To coincide with this year’s global celebrations for World Rivers Day, the city’s waterfront – from Victoria Quays along the Sheffield & Tinsley Canal and the River Don – will be transformed with a bumper-packed weekend of free family-friendly activities, live music, art, food & drink during 2324 September, 10am to 4pm. On Saturday 23 September try a range of water-based activities for free at Victoria Quays on the Sheffield & Tinsley Canal, from fishing tasters, canoe tasters to boat trips. Enjoy artwork by internationally acclaimed artist Alex Chinneck and an exhibition of canal paintings by local artist Norah K Rogerson. Street artist Philip Padfield will be at work as he paints a unique art work for the festival. Live music, food and drink stalls plus a terrace BBQ and stalls from Hilton Hotel will be available throughout the day. On Sunday 24 September visit Kelham Island Museum on the banks of the River Don to enjoy a range of have-a-go heritage and traditional crafts, community stalls, local artisans, kayaking and riverside walks and talks. Live music with Dead Man’s Uke and guests, plus refreshments from the Steam Hammer Café BBQ and Millowners Arms Ale will be helping the festivities along. Normal admission fees to the museum apply. The Sheffield Waterfront Festival is part of the Canal & River Trust’s plans to reconnect the local community to their waterway over the next 18 months, ahead of the Sheffield & Tinsley Canal’s bicentenary in 2019. Tom Wright, development and engagement manager for the Canal & River Trust said: “Sheffield would not be the city it is without its waterways. This festival will be celebrating the city’s industrial heritage which played such an important part in its development. The River Don and Sheffield & Tinsley Canal not only connected the city to the wider world, they powered the foundries and workshops of the 18th and 19th centuries. This festival will hopefully help the local community learn about Sheffield’s heritage and the many ways to enjoy the waterways resource on their doorstep – from a trafficfree route to school, to a place to unwind at the weekend.” He added: “We’ve been bowled over by the support we’ve had

from businesses along city’s waterfront and would love for Sheffield Waterfront Festival to become an annual event. A special thanks to our supporters, who have helped to bring this event to the city – the River Stewardship Company, CMS, Born and Raised and the Hilton Sheffield Hotel.” Niki Connolly from Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust that looks after Kelham Island Museum said: “We’re delighted to be working in partnership with the Canal & River Trust and the River Stewardship Company to host the city’s biggest Waterfront Festival. At Kelham Island we’ll be celebrating the role waterpower played in the history of the Island and the growing community of people who live and work here. It’s going to be an exciting weekend for everyone who shares a passion for supporting our riverside heritage.” Hellen Hornby, Communities, Education and Engagement manager for the River Stewardship Company said: “We’re looking forward to the Sheffield Waterfront Festival, there is something for everyone on offer, from an exhibition of canal paintings by Norah Rogerson and pirate themed treasure hunts to tarot readings and guided heritage walks along the waterfront. It’s a great opportunity for people to see what Victoria Quays has to offer and how we can make it a vibrant, welcoming place for all.” With The Friends of the Blue Loop and the River Stewardship Company, the Canal & River Trust has been busy preparing the waterfront to ensure it looks its best ahead of the festival. The Canal & River Trust are asking local residents and businesses to get involved in preparations and join drop-in Sheffield Towpath Taskforce, to help with lock painting, cutting back overgrown vegetation, litter picking and graffiti removal, to make the canal an even more attractive place for people to visit. Becca Dent, volunteering development co-ordinator at the Canal & River Trust, said: “We’re looking for people who enjoy spending time outdoors and want to make a difference to the city of Sheffield. No previous experience or commitment is necessary, people can join us for as long or as often as suits – we have two dates coming up – 7th and 21st September, from 10am-2pm and we’d love to hear from you.” If interested contact: becca.dent@ canalrivertrust.org.uk A special reception to launch the Sheffield Waterfront Festival will also thank corporate supporters on Friday 22 September at 5.30pm at

the Terminal Warehouse, Victoria Quays, S2 5SY. Norah K. Rogerson made a visual record of the Canal Basin during its progress from dereliction to regeneration between 1988 and 1995. A selection of her work will be on display in the terminal warehouse from the 23rd September. The warehouse has been carefully restored thanks to Ovo, who are kindly donating the time, resources and space so that the exhibition of this important collection can be seen again. Norah explains her this series of watercolours, inspired by the draining of Sheffield Canal Basin: “The superb stone foundations of the Terminal Warehouse (1819) were revealed and I realised that whatever became of this building, unlike some in Venice, it would never sink into the mud……I was taken on a tour of the north and west quays, including the interiors. I decided to record views that would disappear once the new buildings were constructed — in fact this happened very quickly. My style of working had to change in order to adapt to the pace imposed by the building operations.” Sheffield & Tinsley Canal travels through areas and communities that will be transformed in the years to come – Attercliffe, Tinsley and the fast-emerging Olympic Legacy Park. As the focus of the city will increasingly look to the east to provide exceptional places to enjoy, live and work, Sheffield’s waterways will once again be seen as an asset that can power the city forward for another 200 years. Councillor Mazher Iqbal, cabinet member for business and investment, at Sheffield City Council said: “There is no doubt that Sheffield’s canal and riverside has great history and great potential. We are keen to reconnect the city centre with its waterways – the canal, Rivers Don Porter and Sheaf, and are making excellent progress in this ambition. We recently unveiled plans for Castlegate which include the chance of uncovering part of the River Sheaf and an archaeological dig on the site of Sheffield Castle.” He added: “This festival will focus people’s attention on one of the city’s gems and will also include some plans for further up river and how the canal can deliver regeneration and culture from the city centre to Meadowhall, Attercliffe and Tinsley.” For more information on the work of the Canal & River Trust, including lots of volunteering opportunities and how to donate, visit www.canalrivertrust.org.uk

ST BARNABAS HOUSE AT HIGHFIELDS, SHEFFIELD COMPLETES TRANSFORMATION “I can’t believe what you’ve done with the building – the transformation is incredible!” From parish church to retirement housing, St Barnabas House still looks like a church from the outside, but where there were once

pews and pulpit, there is now a bright and airy communal lounge, an enclosed garden, and 28 individual flats on 4 floors, served with a lift, for retired residents. Each flat is selfcontained, with its own kitchen (with

fridge and cooker) and bathroom, and each is individual because of incorporating the original features of the church building. Every flat is linked by pull cords to a monitoring service, who have details of relatives and carers to be able to call for help if needed, and linked to the Independent Living Officer who is on site during the day to provide help and support. Residents get together for shared activities, or

just for tea and a chat, and for many residents the company of other retired people is one of the great benefits of being at St Barnabas. For others, the privacy of your own flat and the choice to live your own life, independent of neighbours, is more important. At St Barnabas, that is entirely your choice. It may feel like a big decision to move from a home where you have lived for many years, into sheltered accommodation, but

as one St Barnabas resident put it: ‘’it’s the best thing I ever did, moving in here. There is company if you want it and no need to be lonely. I moved here because of the staff and the other residents, they are lovely.’’ But don’t take our word for it: come and see for yourself! Just give us a call if you would like to come and have a look round, have a chat with Bev our Independent Living Officer - or join our residents in the lounge for a cup of tea to get the real story of living at St Barnabas.

CLUB TRIP PICS WANTED A local author has put the call out for any photographs of club trips of old. Neil Anderson is writing the forthcoming Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to Working Men’s Clubs and is eager to include some. The autumn release of a book dedicated to celebrating Sheffield’s Working Men’s Club scene at the height of its popularity is set to be

the start of a campaign to create a permanent legacy to the movement. The ‘Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to Working Men’s Clubs’ is set to focus on the 1970s and has involved interviews with scores of stars, clubland staff and punters. With nigh on four million members nationally in the era, there were over 4,000 venues across the land Author Neil Anderson,

who has already written two best-selling books on the 1970s, is set to use the findings from the book as the basis for an application to the Heritage Lottery Fund for help in creating permanent legacy for a scene in perpetual decline. He said: “It’s a sad fact that this once massive scene is fast disappearing and I’m aiming to use the book to

argue the case for more to be done to record and celebrate the scene for future generations.” Neil can be contacted via: neil@dirtystopouts. com

SHEFFIELD CELEBRATES SPECIAL OLYMPICS’ ATHLETES Following the success of the Special Olympics GB National Summer Games, which saw more than 2,600 athletes with intellectual disabilities compete in Sheffield earlier this month, the Lord Mayor will be hosting a reception at the Town Hall on Thursday 31 August. The 2017 Special Olympics Games was country’s disability sporting event of the year. It showcased the extraordinary talent and determination of the athletes over four days of competition. They were supported over four days of competition by 800 coaches, 750 volunteers, 150 officials and more than 6,000 family and friends. Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “It was amazing to see thousands of athletes making many sporting achievements, and we wanted to celebrate their success and show them how much we enjoyed watching them. “The reception at the Town Hall will be a great way to celebrate the talent Sheffield has witnessed at the Special Olympic Games.” With more than 80 athletes and coaches expected to be in attendance, the Town Hall reception is expected to be a fun event, reminiscing on the amount of joy the Special Olympics bought to the city of Sheffield. The Lord Mayor, Councillor Anne Murphy said: “We are excited to welcome the sporting heroes of the Special Olympic Games to the Town Hall. What a great way to share stories of a fabulous event that was enjoyed by so many.”

The last Games was held in Bath in 2013, with 1,700 athletes competing in 12 sport categories. Thanks to Sheffield’s sporting facilities, Sheffield 2017 was a much bigger event, with almost 1,000 more athletes and 21 sports. The reception will be held at Sheffield’s Town Hall from 2 to 4pm, in Reception Room A on 31 August.

WARNE DISAPPOINTED A frustrating afternoon for the Millers against Charlton Athletic saw the Addicks leave South Yorkshire with all three points after a professional 2-0 display. Rotherham United boss Paul Warne addressed the media following the defeat, saying: “I was pretty disappointed with my group today. We started pretty well and had a good chance to go 1-0 up but didn’t take it. “They scored from a corner which is inexcus-

FERGUSON: WE WERE BELOW PAR KONGOLO ENJOYING Darren Ferguson was left to wonder what could have been after Rovers lost 2-0 away at AFC Wimbledon. Two quick second-half goals from Kwesi Appiah and Andy Barcham saw the hosts take all three points and ended Rovers unbeaten start to the season. Rovers also went down to 10 men after Matty Blair went off with possible concussion, after Rovers had utilised all three substitutions, and Ferguson felt his side were below the standards they have set this season. “It’s a very disappointing day but I thought we should’ve won the game, we weren’t anywhere near the levels we’re used to and we were just way off it as a team, the way we’ve conceded those goals, it hit us hard,” Ferguson said. “Going down to 10 men for the last 15 minutes was always going to be tough, but, even at 2-0, I thought if we got a goal we could go on and get another, but if you aren’t at it in this league you’ll get beat. “Wimbledon made it tight and the two boys in the middle were very experienced, but we were nowhere near the levels we are used to. The

heat made it very difficult for us, but I’m not using that as an excuse because it was the same for them.” Ferguson was also disappointed with the lack of control that Rovers had in the game, and was quick to apologise to the fans that travelled down. “It was a bad day at the office, no doubt, and we have to put it behind us, it’s not very often that I have to go over to apologise to the fans because they’ve travelled in their numbers and been brilliant, so I feel sorry for them,” he said. “We lost a goal and we’ve lost one shortly after, we just had to keep our composure and we didn’t. We know we can’t have too many bad days, but I can’t be too harsh because it has been a good start and hopefully this is a one off, Peterborough next week will be a big test because they are a very good side. “Everyone is aware what this league is about, the standards weren’t there, but we know that we have to be consistent, and I know that I don’t have to say much to my players because they know what I expect.”

LOAN SPELL

The Manchester City midfielder played the final half hour at AFC Wimbledon on Saturday, having started in both the club’s Carabao Cup wins. “Everybody has been great since I came in, the manager is a very good coach and he wants to help me improve and he has worked with me a lot already,” he said. “It’s very different to what I’m used to, the levels are much higher, and you have to perform well in this league compared to the under 23s, but this is a good level of football and it’s one that I like, I’m really enjoying my football. “I just want to improve myself and help the team out, the team plays just the way I like and it suits me very well, and there is a lot of quality in this side and this will only help me to improve too.” Saturday’s loss at AFC Wimbledon was frustrating, but Kongolo expects a reaction from his team-mates. “It’s never nice to lose and the way that they played made it very difficult for us to play, the weather conditions didn’t help us too, that made it very hard for us,” Kongolo said. “The pitch was very dry and sticky, the ball just didn’t drop for us and that didn’t help, but we’ve got to keep going and this is only the first game we’ve lost all season so we have to make things right in the next game.”

Long may that continue.”

Week two in the County Senior League took place on the Bank Holiday weekend. Yet again it was a shorter than average fixture list, easing us into the start of the season. Premier Division Football once again lived up to its reputation for unpredictability on Saturday at Old Road, where Denaby United who opened their season with a an 8-1 loss to Oughtibridge WMFC, took on Houghton Main. Houghton Main won their opening day game 3-1 away against Millmoor Juniors. However, this time it was roles reversed as goals from Ainsley Finney (2), and Aiden Oakley gave Denaby a fine 3-1 home win. Wombwell Main made it back-to-back defeats for Millmoor Juniors, who they beat 2-0 at Grange Park. Wombwell travel to face Denaby United next time out. Grimethorpe Sports opened their season at Sheerien Park with a hard-fought 4-2 victory over North Gawber Colliery. Division One Newly promoted Dodworth Miners Welfare sit lead the way in Division One, after a home victory over Brinsworth Whitehill on Saturday. Dodworth won the game 4-1, a mirror of the win they recorded last week against AFC Dronfield. The other two newly promoted teams Stocksbridge Park Steels Development and Sheffield Medics faced-off at the Look Local Stadium. The Medics came out 5-3 winners in an entertaining affair. The Medics sit in second place early on, in a division that the recently promoted appear to have taken well to. Division Two Boynton Sports followed up last weeks’ 7-1 win over Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Development, with an equally emphatic 5-0 win over North Gawber Colliery Reserves at Concord Park. It is an impressive start for Boynton who sit atop the Division Two standings at this early stage. Burngreave FC’s first County Senior League fixture ended in victory over AFC Dronfield Reserves. Burngreave were 4-0 winners at Gosforth Fields as they introduced themselves to the division.

BLADES IMPRESS WITH DERBY WIN Few can say that United don’t entertain under Chris Wilder and the Blades deserved this victory in a highly impressive performance. Billy Sharp twice rolled into an empty net either side of an own goal as the Blades made it three home league wins from three in the Championship. With Clarke suspended, Lavery got the nod to start with Sharp, whilst loan capture CarterVickers, signed from

Spurs on Friday, was on the bench. In the S2 sunshine, United settled quicker than the visitors and won a corner and a couple of throws in the opposition’s half before being gifted the lead on four minutes. The experienced Carson fluffed his clearance from the left of his goal and SHARP coolly slotted into the unguarded net with a first time effort from 20 yards. The visitors looked for

an instant response but Vydra was held up by Wright and O’Connell stole the ball, whilst in a hectic opening half hour the Blades were more positive. Coutts shot wide after a good build up. On the break Derby looked a threat, no more so than on 36 minutes when Vydra raced clear but Fleck tracked him all the way into the penalty area and timed his tackle to perfection. Russell was the next to go close, curling over

GAFFER DELIGHTED WITH VICTORY

Chris Wilder was once again ‘delighted’ with his players as the Blades produced an excellent display to overcome Derby County at Bramall Lane. Billy Sharp scored either side of Jonny Russell’s

own-goal, including a game clinching third goal in the seventh minute of injury-time, as United made it three wins from three back in the second tier. And the beaming boss said: “I’m delighted and I hope as a group of

players and staff, we’ve sent our supporters home happy to enjoy their Saturday night. “They should be because they’ve seen a proper team out there, committed and giving everything to the cause and the badge.

CARTER-VICKERS JOINS ON LOAN WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH Sheffield United have returned to the transfer market to capture Tottenham Hotspur youngster Cameron Carter-Vickers on loan. Further scans on Richard Stearman pushed Chris Wilder to act after it was revealed that his injury lay-off would be longer than previously anticipated. The central defender is yet to make an appearance in the Premier League for Spurs, but was involved in the first team squad during pre-season. On the loan move, Wilder said: “Cameron is young, athletic and highly-rated by Tottenham and we’re delighted we’ve been trusted to continue his development. He is a central defender with a good attitude and adds competition for places in that area.” Wilder’s pursuit for former-loanee Ethan Ebanks-Landell ended in disappointment earlier in the window.

Clips gathered from the 19-year-olds career so far highlight that he brings similar attributes to Bramall Lane. Carter-Vickers will have to dislodge three central defenders who have all had impressive starts to the season. Chris Basham and Jack O’Connell look very capable at the side of Jake Wright. If Wright continues in the same vein, Carter-Vickers and a returning Stearman will have a hard task rejoining the defensive line-up. This column will be published on

Thursday, or as it will be more commonly referred too this week, transfer deadline day. It has been reported that Wilder has asked to take Watford winger Jerome Sinclair on loan. The formerLiverpool player would certainly provide an injection of pace into the attack. Billy Sharp, Leon Clarke and Ched Evans do not possess great pace and have struggled to get in behind against tough Championship defences. Whoever Wilder and his team manage to bring in, all Blades will be optimistic following an impressive start to the season.

following another break but the winger’s next contribution was more defining on 39 minutes. Duffy, Freeman and Lavery linked up and to prevent the latter getting a shot in, RUSSELL’s attempted clearance could only find the bottom corner of his own net. Derby had a couple of opportunities to reduce the arrears before the break, including a cheap free-kick, but United held firm and deserved their applause at the half-time whistle. It was the visitors who made the better start to the second period but Huddlestone was off target and Blackman saved from Vydra. An accidental clash of heads between Olsson and Lavery saw both players return to their feet but the Blades striker was replaced by Evans. Derby made a double change before the hour and Carruthers replaced Duffy in a fractious spell

of free-kicks conceded by both teams, although the referee ignored Vydra’s appeals for a penalty on 65 minutes. United went close when Carruthers drilled a cross along the six-yard box and O’Connell was penalised for climbing at the back post as the home side threatened again. Carruthers picked up a knock and was replaced by Lundstram for the final 10 minutes. Late on Johnson headed Wisdom’s cross wide and a speculative Lawrence shot caused a problem for Blackman but the ball flew wide of the post. On 85 minutes, United went close when Sharp latched onto a Stevens through ball but Carson made an impressive one-handed save and Freeman took on a few Derby defenders in the penalty area. As seven minutes of injury-time approached Martin headed wide

a Lawrence cross but the visitors did score to cause a few nervous moments. A Johnson cross saw BRYSON arrive late in the box to head home. Derby, expectedly, threw caution to the wind, but left holes at the back. Sharp had the ball in the net but he was offside as he received Lundstram’s pass and the skipper then turned provider to put Fleck in but Carson blocked. Carson’s next contribution was to head into the Blades box for a very late free-kick and he was left stranded as the Blades broke away and SHARP kept his coolly to roll into the unguarded net - again to confirm the victory.

“They’ve gone out there and respected the opposition, but from there we’ve got after them and I loved the way we did so. “I loved the way we defended when we had to and what a fantastic feeling when Billy rolls that one into the empty net at the end.”

Wilder added: “It was thoroughly deserved, we were the dominant team. Gary (Rowett) will be disappointed with the goals and the mistakes and they were always going to come on to us because they have some top players. “They are a big club in the division and have

been for a number of years. We had to see it out and I would being ultra-critical to pick certain little things up on a fantastic day for our football club. “We’re back in the Championship and we’ve overcome what I knew would be our toughest test to date.”

Blades: Blackman, Stevens, Fleck, O’Connell, Basham, Sharp, Wright, Coutts, Freeman, Duffy (Carruthers 64, Lundstram 81), Lavery (Evans 54).

PREMIERSHIP DEFENDER ARRIVES AT THE LANE

Chris Wilder has bolstered his defensive options with the signing of a young Premier League defender. Tottenham Hotspur’s Cameron CarterVickers arrives at Bramall Lane on a season-long loan and is eligible to make his debut against Derby County at the weekend. The arrival of the 19-year-old, who has represented the USA at three different youth

levels, gives Wilder additional resources at the back following the news that Richard Stearman will be out for around six to eight weeks. Last season, CarterVickers made his Spurs debut in the third round of the League Cup against Gillingham at White Hart Lane. On Carter-Vickers joining the Blades, the United manager remarked: “Cameron

is young, athletic and highly-rated by Tottenham and we’re delighted we’ve been trusted to continue his development. “He is a central defender with a good attitude and adds competition for places in that area. I like the way Tottenham play and it’s clear that Cameron has the ability to be a very good player.”

HONOURS EVEN FOR THE OWLS AT BURTON Gary Hooper opened his Championship account for the season but the Owls were pegged back by a Joe Mason leveller for Burton. A close contest

unfolded at the Pirelli Stadium with chances at both ends in the early exchanges, the best of which fell to the Brewers just five minutes in. Damien McCrory

swung a perfect cross into the heart of the penalty area where Marvin Sordell planted a firm header inches past the post. Moments later Barry Bannan teed up

George Boyd a yard inside the box but the former Burnley man’s shot lacked real power. Then came a bittersweet passage of play that saw the Owls lose a key player but take the lead. Lucas Akins was beaten to a long ball by the outrushing Keiren Westwood but caught the keeper on the follow through, resulting in the Ireland international leaving the field after a lengthy spell of treatment. But on 36 minutes, Wednesday hit the front. Jack Hunt picked up a loose ball down the right

flank and crossed for Hooper, who executed a clever back heel into the far corner. The Owls had the ball in the net again before the break but the flag was up to deny Boyd his maiden goal. Burton started the second half with zest and Sean Scannell brought a good save from Joe Wildsmith – but the substitute custodian could do little to prevent the equaliser on 65 minutes. A hanging ball fell nicely into the path of Mason, who swivelled to drill an unstoppable drive across Wildsmith and in. Wednesday responded with Steven Fletcher

stabbing a Jack Hunt cross narrowly wide before Daniel Pudil saw a looped header cleared off the line by Luke Murphy. The Owls continued in pursuit of a winner and almost found it with a David Jones header that flew just over the top but that was the last of any real openings and the game finished with honours even.

Wednesday: Westwood (Wildsmith 34), Hunt, Lees, Pudil, Fox, Boyd (Wallace 74), Bannan, Jones, Reach, Hooper, Fletcher (Rhodes 74)

“I DON’T KNOW HOW WE ANNIVERSARY BOOK LAUNCHED DIDN’T WIN” CARLOS Carlos Carvalhal said his side deserved all three points following the Owls’ 1-1 against Burton at the Pirelli Stadium. Gary Hooper opened the scoring for the Owls in the first half with a sublime backheel but the Brewers drew level through Joe Mason. Carvalhal said: “I don’t know how we didn’t win that game. “We were the better team and I feel bad for our players that we haven’t got

the win because they deserved all three points. “We got the goal and then we created more chances to go two in front, but unfortunately the goal didn’t come. “Their goal is one that we shouldn’t concede, they did not trouble our defence much during the game. “We know we will get better, all the teams of the Championship have had a similar start. “Next week is the international break so

now all the players can get some rest after the high number of games so far.” On a first half injury to goalkeeper Keiren Westwood, Carlos added: “We will have to assess the situation because I did not see the doctor yet. “I am not happy because I think the challenge was a red card. I do not say it was deliberate but it was late but we must respect the decision of the referee.”

As the Owls’ 150th anniversary approaches, Wednesday can this week unveil two brand new official publications authored by club historian Jason Dickinson. ‘Sheffield Wednesday FC – the Official History, 150 Years’ and ‘WAWAW – Fans’ Memories Through the Generations’ are both launched this week and on sale as a package at Owls in the Park 2017 on Sunday, 3 September. The anniversary history book covers every facet of the club’s long and fascinating existence. Other subjects covered include all the managers, from Dickinson to Carvalhal, all the club presidents and chairmen, from Chatterton to Chansiri, and the various

There are also in-depth profiles of the club’s greatest players plus a chapter for meetings with city rivals United, not forgetting a look at the founding fathers of the cricket and football club and focus on Wednesday’s first 25 years before they became a Football League club in 1892. Published alongside the official history book is a truly unique publication containing interviews with Wednesday supporters of all age groups recalling their years of watching the club. The author has interviewed a wide variety of fans over the last 18 months and their stories paint a wonderfully evocative picture of exactly what it is like to follow the Owls, dealing with

the fish kept coming… another personal best, this time at 11lb 12oz, a shiny scaled mirror, bought more smiles, and as a result, Joe’s confidence became more apparent as he rebaited, recast, and reset the rod on the rests. Another angler approached us, confiding that he had caught only two fish, whilst we were flying with seven or eight to our tally, which only gave us further encouragement that we were getting it right, and as we spoke, Joe hit yet another fish to increase the score still further; excellent! After five hours fishing, I thought the time had come to finish our session, and reflect on the things we had covered. Before I got chance though, the spool spun, the alarm squealed, and Joe lifted the rod into yet another pb, this time a lump of exactly 15lb, and then finished off his last cast with a bream; the disappointment on his face when the lazy slab didn’t fight back made me chuckle, but at least he has seen the other side of fishing too! I dropped Joe off at his house, and drove home to upload the pictures and see what we had captured… When I browsed the images, I was surprised to see how many featured a beaming smile; if I’m honest, I’d been so intent on ensuring that Joe caught something, I didn’t really notice how much he enjoyed it, which did become apparent as I perused each image, and saw a pleasing grin across most of them! I know I enjoyed it too, sharing knowledge is something we all love to do, and the fact that he smashed his personal best, finishing with a fish that many other anglers would love to catch, was the icing on the cake; maybe there is something in National Fishing Month, and encouraging others after all!

Escape the Winter Blues as #BlackpoolHasItAll for Families Travel Review by Marc Cooper

Last weekend myself and the family escaped to the West coast for the weekend. I left my ‘Kiss me quick’ hat at home, choosing to enjoy some indoor excitement on the first day our trip instead of grabbing the bucket and spade and sitting on the beautiful beach as we decided to explore what Blackpool really had to offer the family. We arrived at the glorious Elgin Hotel on the Queen’s Promenade. The hotel is family owned with 89 en-suite

bedrooms, you can understand straight away why they are known as the perfect resort hotel. After dropping our bags off in the room we were ready to explore Blackpool. We were given a Blackpool resort pass, which allowed us entry to all the major attractions in the town for the weekend, so we planned on making the most of it. Visit Blackpool and Merlin Entertainments have teamed up and launched a 2017 campaign to prove #BlackpoolHasItAll for families to showcase Blackpool’s collection of worldrenowned, family attraction

brands and offers, and it was our pleasure to review the campaign. We started at the World Famous Madame Tussauds using our resort passes. We sought fame with Cheryl Cole, popped into the Rovers Return to have a quick pint with Ken and Deidre before doing a bushtucker trial with Ant and Dec in the I’m a Celeb jungle. The must have souvenir from Tussauds is having your own hand made into wax which is a surprisingly enjoyable experience. Overall there is something for all the family at Tussards with the children loving to have their photos with Cheryl and Olly Murs. Eating Out in Blackpool Our evening meal was spent at the popular Las Iguanas restaurant. It is a family

favourite when it comes to dining out so we were not disappointed. The setting was relaxed and the staff were extremely friendly and attentive. The restaurant offers South American favourites! Bringing a splash of colour to the fabulous Promenade seafront Family Daytime Activities We were thankful that the weather had brightened up on day two for a morning trip to Blackpool Zoo, this is the only attraction we couldn’t use our amazingly cheap weekend tram ticket. It takes about 10 minutes in the car from Blackpool Sea front. With more than 1,500 animals and engaging talks throughout the day it gives any Zoo in the UK a run for its money. During our visit, our favourite animals were the elephants and giraffe.

Our final stop was Blackpool Pleasure Beach where the addition of Nickelodeon Land, really makes the theme park a more welcome proposition for families with young children. Many of the rides children can go on regardless of their height as long as they are with an adult, meaning there was plenty for the

35

family to enjoy. Obviously a trip to Blackpool Pleasure Beach would not be complete without going on The Big One, famous for its stomach churning 205ft drop, remains one of the best rollercoasters in the UK. The morning after we enjoyed a sumptuous cooked breakfast in the Elgin Hotel, fully rested from our eventful day out before we set off on the short trip back over the Pennines.
