A MULTI-COLOURED MARQUEE MOVES THROUGH DONCASTER Following outdoor extravaganzas Colour of Time and the explosive Clash of Drums, Cast welcomes everyone to enjoy another worldclass free outdoor performance for The Colour of Light on Friday 22 September at 8pm in Doncaster town centre. The Colour of Light is a multi-coloured marquee on the move featuring gigantic wheels of colour which will roll to music through Doncaster before an explosive finale outside Cast. Last year’s Clash of Drums in 2016 saw a whopping 3,500

people take over the streets of Doncaster for one heart stopping performance. Over 2,000 people have already registered for this years event. This year’s procession will start around 8pm near the Civic Quarter Car Park on Cleveland Street before travelling down Wood Street and Waterdale to a finale outside Cast on Sir Nigel Gresley Square. Cast is a charity and to be able to stage this type of free family friendly event, it relies on support from across the borough and this year anyone can be part of making it happen. Cast has

already secured over £15,000 to stage the September event and need help to raise the last £5,000 to make this the best year yet. Donations can be made by going online to castindoncaster.com/ light-cast or contacting

the box office on 01302 303 959. Cast is partnering with Right Up Our Street and the family run Regent Hotel, to bring the show to the streets of Doncaster. For more details on The Colour of Light on

SHEFFIELD VENUES TO OPEN THEIR DOORS HERITAGE CELEBRATION Once again venues across Sheffield are preparing to open their doors as part of a national celebration of heritage. From Thursday 7 - Sunday 10 September, the public will be invited into a whole host of buildings across the city as part of Heritage Open Days 2017. Now in its 23rd year, Heritage Open Days celebrate England’s fantastic architecture and culture by offering free access to places that are usually closed to the public or normally charge for

admission. This year, over 120 events will be taking place across Sheffield, all of them completely free of charge, offering the biggest and most diverse programme yet. From Shepherd’s Wheel, Abbeydale Hamlet and Portland Works to Kelham Island, Sheffield’s industrial past is always in firm focus, but this year it will also be celebrated with insights at three sites of Crucible Works. Library heritage is also high up on the agenda, with the volunteerled community

libraries at Broomhill, Walkley, Stannington, Upperthorpe and Ecclesfield joining the Central Library on the line-up, all offering talks and tours. Regather Works have several fascinating talks on offer, while a variety of different themed walks are set to take place, covering themes such as football heritage, music halls, civil engineering and historic pubs. The number of Sheffield participants has seen significant growth in Sheffield over the last couple of years, as the profile of the

national celebration has been boosted locally thanks largely to the support of the Sheffield Civic Trust, who have helped coordinate and promote many of the events taking place in Sheffield. Heritage Open Day events are completely free so why not make a day of it and create your own tour of some of the venues, there’s so many to choose from. Due to popular demand, there are advance booking requirements for some of venues so please check all information ahead of your visit and

book early to avoid disappointment. Sheffield Heritage Open Day programmes are available from the Welcome to Sheffield Visitor Centre on Surrey Street, most libraries and participating venues across the city or you can download a pdf of the full Sheffield Heritage Open Days from www.sheffieldcivictrust. org.uk For more information and the complete listing of venues taking part in Heritage Open Days 2017 visit the official website. www. heritageopendays. org.uk

Venus continues to sparkle magnificently, and is forging a link to Saturn, the planet of structure. This can help you to realize who can be truly meaningful for you, because there’s little doubt that there may be other people, by contrast, that you might be looking to release from your orbit. Call for more...

You can really feel the platform is shaping up to demonstrate to people just how talented you are. In love, if you’re tempted by someone new, there could be some kind of catch or difficulty to this. In an existing relationship, a strand of jealousy may be threaded through a tie. Call for more advice...

Your friendship sector is given a bolt of electrifying energy. But this is also the area of highest hopes, and if something hasn’t really been working as you want, your ruling planet Mars is going to help you to punch forwards in planning a much better future Scorpio. Call for more astral advice...

Saturn has been influencing your sector of relating for over two years, and if there is someone closely around you, be it housemate, family member or friend who tends to expect a lot from you, without perhaps considering your needs, you may find yourself being more feisty. Call for more advice...

There’s a big shift in emphasis going on, away from adding excitement and sparkle to your existence onto one which is very much about raising your profile and receiving greater recognition for your talents, and resetting your goals. How this is perceived by others may prove a sticking point. Call for more...

Your mental and physical energies are going to be activated to an even greater degree, and this could see you buzzing with ideas and possibilities. The Quarter Moon however, could see some vague doubts creep in, and urges you to steer clear of anyone with a negative vibration. Call for more...

A relationship can reach a more profound level of understanding, and whilst it may not be quite as flamboyant as some, value the depth of feeling you both share. This can also be a week when you’re demonstrating a great deal more panache. You can demonstrate your talents in spades. Call for more...

Extracting greater value from your talents is going to be a theme for some while, and you can also become more attuned to how your friends or network value you too. It may seem that you have to work quite hard to get the recognition that you feel you deserve. Patience is the theme. Call for more...

If your aspirations and those of someone you’re attracted to are syncing, this week can be a time when your relationship reaches a point of real substance and future commitment. However, you may need to temper your more idealistic side when it comes to business negotiations or finances. Call for more...

With Mercury rejoining your sign, and Mars getting a toehold in Virgo too, there is going to be a sense that you’re moving more into the present, and that you can create greater traction and energy around the things that are important to you. Just be aware there may be doubters. Call for more...

THE RETURN OF THE PLEASANT PHEASANT It was more than 17 years ago that Carl Travers became mine host at the Pheasant Inn at Wadsley Bridge, Hillsborough and coined the phrase “The Pleasant Pheasant.” Now, after a break away due to health issues, Carl & Samantha have returned with his new team. This includes manager Sarah who joined recently and Janinne, the excellent cook who has been preparing fresh home-cooked meals at The Pheasant for many years. As regulars have commented, the team are now successfully bringing back the Pleasant Pheasant atmosphere, and this Saturday, 9th September, they will be hosting a 70's/80's Fancy Dress party. Everyone is invited and there will be beer tokens for all in fancy dress with prizes for best Male and Female. The Pheasant will also be hosting a special fundraising charity night in aid of Macmillan Cancer support

on Saturday 23rd September in remembrance of their much-loved former Barman Sammy. From Monday, September 18th a brand new “All Day – Every Day” Menu will be available and every Wednesday will be Carvery Day, when two people (yes two) can enjoy Janinne’s home cooked carvery meals for only £6.00 from 12.00 midday to 2.30pm. Then from 2.30 to 7.00pm Carveries are still only £4.95 each on Wednesday’s; so while it pays to be early, a quality home cooked carvery is still great value at The Pheasant on Wednesdays. On Sunday’s the ever popular carvery will be served all day but with availability extended until 7.00pm. The new menu will include home made favourites such as Meat and Tatty Pie or Chilli’s, etc, but the only exception will be on Match Days when this favourite “local” for Owls fans will serve Match Day

specials including Burgers, Hot Dogs and Pizzas. Talking of football, The Pheasant has great Sports TV facilities, with Sky TV on big screens in both rooms so separate games or other sports can be shown simultaneously. There are always great drink offers at The Pheasant and Carl is re-introducing Live Entertainment very soon, so keep an eye on their Facebook page, facebook.com/ pheasantpub/ for updates. Located just off Halifax Road at Wadsley Bridge, The Pheasant is only five minutes walk from Hillsborough, so why not call in soon to discover why customers are saying that The Pleasant Pheasant has returned. TALK TO YOUR PHARMACIST! Did you know - your local pharmacists can offer far more than simply dispensing medicines! Pharmacies can help with stopping smoking, cutting down on alcohol, advice on safe sex and emergency contraception. Many pharmacies are open until late and at weekends. You don’t need an appointment – you can just walk in. Your pharmacist can also talk to you confidentially without anything being noted in your medical records, which some people may prefer. Help with your medicines Pharmacists are trained experts in using medicines safely. They can advise you on the safe use of prescription and over-thecounter medicines. New Medicine Service If you are prescribed an anticoagulant (a blood-thinning medicine) or a medicine to treat asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure for the first time, you can get extra help and advice about your medicine from your local pharmacist through a free scheme called the New Medicine Service (NMS). Repeat prescriptions If you’re regularly prescribed the same medicine, your pharmacist may offer to manage your repeat prescriptions. This means fewer trips to the GP just to get another prescription. If you have a long-term medical condition that is stable, your GP may give you a repeat prescription that’s valid for up to a year. Your pharmacist can supply your medicine at regular intervals so you don’t have to keep going to your GP. Let your pharmacist know if you are having any problems or side effects, and they can let your GP know. Medicines Use Review (MUR) Lots of pharmacies now offer a detailed consultation about your medicines called a Medicines Use Review (MUR). This is especially useful for people who are taking several medicines. You can talk about what you’re taking, when you should be taking it, and any side effects that you may be concerned about. You should also tell your pharmacist if you are taking any over-the counter medicines or any herbal remedies. They can advise you whether these can be taken at the same time or not. If you’re having problems, your pharmacist can offer advice or, if

necessary, advise you to see your GP. You can ask for an MUR, or your pharmacist or GP might recommend one. They are done in a private consultation room in the pharmacy and you don’t have to pay. Afterwards, you’ll be given a written record of the consultation. A copy will be sent to your GP.

Getting rid of unwanted medicines If your medicine is out of date, unwanted, or some of it is left over after you have stopped taking it, don’t put it in your household bin or flush it down the toilet. Instead, take it to your pharmacy to be disposed of safely. Help with minor ailments Pharmacy teams can give advice about a range of common conditions and minor injuries, such as aches and pains, sore throat, coughs, colds, flu, earache, cystitis and skin rashes. You don’t need an appointment. If you would like to buy an over-the-counter medicine, the pharmacist can help you choose one. They can also advise you on whether you need to see a GP. Here are a few other ways your local pharmacy may be able to help: Minor ailment scheme Some pharmacies also run a minor ailment scheme for common health problems like aches and pains, skin conditions and stomach upsets. If your pharmacy runs a minor ailment scheme, the pharmacist will be able to assess your needs, give you advice, suggest medicines if appropriate, and refer you to a GP if necessary. LOCAL STUDENT WINS PRESTIGIOUS PERFORMING ARTS SCHOLARSHIP A local girl has been awarded a scholarship to attend a parttime theatre school for a year with The Stage newspaper, which is the oldest and most prestigious performing arts publication in the UK. Amber Holmes age 12 has been selected as the winner in a recent competition and will be awarded a year’s free tuition, which equates to more than 100 hours of exceptional performing arts training worth up to £800. The scholarship is in association with part-time theatre school Razzamataz Sheffield, which is part of a national network of schools that have been offering scholarships with The Stage since 2010. This wonderful opportunity gives all children the chance to join in because all that is required is a love of performing arts regardless of formal training. Participants simply had to send in a simple two-minute video highlighting what they can do from the Razzamataz curriculum. So that could be anything from a musical theatre song or dance, a drama piece, a pop song or street dance. For Amber’s winning entry, she decided to perform a version of Valerie by Amy Winehouse. The judges were particularly impressed with the tone of her voice and how she had huge potential and great confidence. “We are delighted for Amber and look forward to helping her grow her natural talent with

the help of our highly skilled performing arts teachers,” says Helen Bell, Principal of Razzamataz Sheffield. “Amber displayed a huge amount of passion, drive and raw talent which we can’t wait to work with,” adds Helen Winning The Stage scholarship has been a huge confidence boost for Amber and means that she has the opportunity to experience all the forms of performing arts that Razzamataz offers. To keep up with today’s trends, the students at Razzamataz participate in all sort of performing arts styles from street dance to pop singing, acting for camera and traditional West End and Broadway musical theatre. "When I found out I’d won the scholarship I was overwhelmed with happiness, so much that me and my mum even started to

cry. I have never won anything before so was shocked, amazed and incredibly pleased” says Amber. “I only ever did ballet dancing when I was really young so it is great to be given the chance to learn this new skill as I desperately want a career in musical theatre when I am older. I can't thank Razzamataz enough for giving me this awesome opportunity!" Now that Amber is part of Razzamataz Sheffield she will have the opportunity to participate in many of the exciting events that will happen in 2017/2018. These include a whole host of opportunities including the upcoming Sheffield Christmas Light Switch On, a performance at the Indigo rooms at the O2 and their annual showcase at the Sheffield City Hall.

RAF MUSIC COMMUNITY CONCERT TOUR VISITS SHEFFIELD As the Royal Air Force approaches its centenary year, the RAF bands will be undertaking its annual RAF Charitable Trust UK wide concert tour at the country’s major venues with events to mark this special anniversary. However, as a smaller independent RAF charity, the Royal Air Force Music Charitable Trust, which over the years has already donated over £30,000 to other service charities, will be marking its own 15th anniversary with concerts to also celebrate these two anniversaries in support of Her Majesty’s Armed Forces. The RAF Music Charitable Trust (with its charitable objects to raise welfare funds through the performance of live music by Royal Air Force musicians) specialises in taking the RAF bands to smaller venues, where local communities would otherwise not have the opportunity to hear these internationally acclaimed military bands in concert. On Friday 13 October, this musical celebration comes to Sheffield with an RAF band concert at Forge Valley School featuring the internationally acclaimed Band of the Royal Air Force College along with their

big band Royal Air Force Swing Wing. Based at RAF College Cranwell, Lincolnshire, since its formation in 1920, the Band of the Royal Air Force College is arguably the band which is most steeped in musical history and tradition, performing at a diverse range of venues and engagements across the UK and in countries worldwide. On parade, the Band has performed at the world-renowned Edinburgh Tattoo, Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace and was also the first RAF Band to change the guard at Edinburgh Castle. This year has also seen the Band perform for Her Majesty The Queen, unveiling the Iraq and Afghanistan Memorial, and also performing in a special tri-service Drumhead Service of Dedication on Horse Guards Parade, in London. On the concert stage the band regularly performs at all the major UK concert halls including the Royal Festival Hall and Royal Albert Hall in London, Symphony Hall in Birmingham, the Royal Concert Hall in Nottingham and the Sage Gateshead. It will therefore be a very special occasion to hear the Band performing at Forge Valley School.

As serving members of the RAF, band personnel also support various operations worldwide. Following the 1991 operational deployment of musicians to Field Hospitals in Saudi Arabia during the First Gulf, personnel now routinely serve in Afghanistan, Turkey, Iraq, Cyprus and The Falkland Islands, therefore it is appropriate that this concert conducted by Director of Music Squadron Leader Richard Murray, will be in aid of the Royal Air Force Music Charitable Trust to raise welfare funds for various other service charities. Founder of the charity, Malcolm Goodman MBE says, “As part of a series of band concerts around the country, it’s a real privilege to be invited by Head Teacher and former Royal Air Force musician Mr Dale Barrowclough, to once again present this special charity concert for the local community at Forge Valley School in Sheffield.” For further information and to purchase tickets for this RAF Anniversary Concert in Sheffield please visit the website at www.rafmct.org.uk/events or contact Forge Valley School on 0114 234 8805 to reserve your ticket.

It’s hard to believe that two years have passed already since the restaurant Cluck opened on the junction of Sheffield Parkway and Price of Wales Road. Since that time, the menu has grown with more choice than ever before and more and more people pop back every week. The founder, Simon Beattie says “We didn’t want to be just another chain restaurant, with a huge menu where pretty much everything is made off site and then just reheated; we wanted to make sure almost everything on our menu is made from scratch, right here in our kitchen”. He added, “it wasn’t easy, when we added ribs to our menu last year our chefs spent time trying to get the marinade just right; and we are probably one of the few places in Sheffield where you can get so many dishes which are made from scratch on site“. As the name suggests, chicken is the main item on the menu, with the rotisserie chicken and the chicken pies being the best sellers. All main dishes also come with a free side, with as many top ups as you can eat. “Over the last two years, I shudder to think how many bags of potatoes we have used, as we make all our chips, roasts, jackets and mash from scratch too!”. A few months ago Cluck introduced the newest item on the menu, the Monster Cluck. Eating challenges prove quite popular these days, but no person has ever managed to finish the Monster Cluck on their own. It comes with 4 slices of steak, 3 different types of whole chicken breast, bacon,

haloumi, fried egg, hashbrown and more. It’s so big Cluck had to buy bigger plates just to serve it on. Simon sighed “it’s a shame no-one has managed to finish it, we have set aside a wall of fame, but it’s pretty empty right now!” Cluck is open all day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. On Sundays there’s an all you can eat buffet breakfast in the morning, and a special Sunday roast menu from noon. The homemade Yorkshire puddings are quite popular! Although Cluck is a restaurant, it’s also become a hub of the local business community, and they host three different business networking groups, meeting 5 times a month, as well as special evenings like a Physic Swirl that also prove very popular.

Reader Competition Win a £50 meal voucher, plus a bottle of wine. Question: how many whole chicken breasts in the Monster Cluck burger? THOR: GODS OF ROCK CELEBRATE THEIR 200TH SHOW Doing something with exactly the same people 50 times is a lot right? What about 100? 150? Well, on Saturday 30th September, at Crookes Social Club, Sheffield, one group of friends will be will be doing what they love for the 200th time!!! That group of friends??? Sheffield’s own ThorGods Of Rock!!! “Yeah, it’s nice to think that we’ve reached a double century with exactly the same bunch of lads” lead singer, Lee Dodge told us. Adding “modern band culture seems to be members coming and going, lineups changing, so we’re really proud that we’ve had the same 5 members from day 1.” Spending just a short time with the band shows you that this is more than just a band to the members. With constant tom-foolery and jokes at each other’s expense, they’re more like a bunch of

mischievous school boys than a rock band. Bass player, Mike Kaperys told us “We’re more like family than band mates. We go to car shows, food festivals, around for Sunday dinner. The other day, James was at my house seeing to my Beetle.” “Getting to 200 with exactly the same members is special” added drummer, Joe Tulley with keyboard player, and brother, James Tulley typifying the spirit of the band jokingly adding “It’s not for lack of trying. We’ve all tried to get in other bands but nobody wants us.” It’s going to be a big night for the band too. Lee told us “Crookes is a cracking venue. It’s a 500 capacity venue, so the atmosphere you get in there is awesome.” Guitarist, Kevin Hill, the quiet member of the band, added “They’ve got nice strong tables too. Good for standing on!!!”

For those that haven’t experienced the power of Thor yet (where have you been!?!), these guys are far from your run of the mill club band, it’s more like a stage show...well less stage, more wherever the heck they can reach!!! They’ve become known for leaving Joe alone on stage with his drums whilst Lee, James, Kevin and Mike head off into the crowd, onto the tables, behind the bar and just about anywhere else, and their followers love them for it. Furthermore, you can forget about the old fashioned jeans and black tea shirt image, these guys take you back to the days of clubland legends such as Guns N Oatcakes and Frightnite with elaborate light shows, pyrotechnics and costumes topped off with front man, Lee, standing at 6’4”, with long blonde hair, dressed in full armour and cape wielding the

iconic hammer, Mjölnir, providing the life size image of the Norse god himself. As for the music, if you’re a fan of the likes of Journey, Iron Maiden, Queen and Sheffield’s own Def Leppard, then Thor-Gods Of Rock are a MUST see. This is not the only upcoming milestone either. Lee told us “we’ve got our 200th show coming up in a few weeks, then, on Saturday 17th February 2018 we’re celebrating 4 years together with a special show at The Embassy with our mates in RNFR. Hopefully, that will be another night to remember.” With James adding “Especially for Lee and Timmy [Bass player with RNFR] as it’s only 2 days before Timmy’s birthday and 3 before Lee’s. So it’s like a triple party.” Joe added “Tickets went on sale last week and have been selling really well so, fingers crossed, it

AWAY VICTORY MEAN A LOT Rotherham United manager Paul Warne said the first win on the road since April 2016 meant a lot, after the Millers recorded a 1-0 victory over Portsmouth at Fratton Park. A first-half strike from Jon Taylor was enough to see off Kenny Jackett’s Pompey, after Warne’s side battled their way to a deserved victory on the south coast. After the game an elated Warne beamed with delight,

as the Millers rewarded the 436 travelling supporters with three points to propel them up the League One table. “It obviously means a lot,” said Warne. “I think our performances this season have been good, and we probably haven’t had the lucky bounce of the ball now and again, but today away from home, we set-up a little bit different. “I thought that we were hard to break down and

we created a lot of half-chances, enough to win the game. I am really pleased, a lot of fans came today which was impressive, especially as it was on TV, and they kept with us. It was a nice feeling for everyone. “It is always nice to win football matches, but away from home is even better. I said to the lads before the game that a win would push us up the league straight away, with two home games coming. I thought that the lads performed really well, there were a lot of changes today but overall we deserved to win.” Despite being put under pressure in the second-half, the Millers looked comfortable with Richard Wood and Michael Ihiekwe forming a rock solid partnership to ensure the Millers also kept a clean sheet. “It isn’t enjoyable when you are losing, and I didn’t want the lads to lose faith in what we are trying to do,” Warne continued. “I think we did everything right, we have prepared the lads perfect for every game, and I have had no regrets. Unfortunately until today we haven’t had the results. It is nice to win, away from home and on telly, it was a real boost and I am really pleased. “I said before the game to the players that the team that go out epitomise me. I am not a man about money and cars, and all that. I do care what people think about me, I want my players to play like they are representing me. I thought that today that the did that. I thought they gave it their all, and joked with them after that’s why we ran up hills in Austria. The character and the fitness. They put their bodies in the way and we had some game sense.”

HOUGHTON ENJOYS GAME TIME Jordan Houghton enjoyed pulling on a Rovers shirt again as he made the first appearance of his loan spell against Peterborough United. The 21-year-old midfielder came off the bench against Posh two days after returning to the club on loan from Chelsea, and seven months after a

serious knee injury ended his previous stay in South Yorkshire. He said: “It’s great to be back. I’ve come back earlier than expected, so the physios have said to the manager to keep the reins on me a bit but hopefully I can work my way back to full fitness and then into the side. “When you get back into it you have to be physically and mentally ready. A major thing in football is how you come back from setbacks, I’ve done some work with a psychologist which has put me in a good mindframe and hopefully I can build on that and get

PLENTY OF POSITIVES FOR FERGUSON

Darren Ferguson felt there were plenty of positives for Rovers as they became the first side to avoid losing to Peterborough in Sky Bet League One this season. The goalless draw at the Keepmoat Stadium ended Posh’s winning start to the season, while also extended Rovers’ impressive opening which has seen just one defeat in eight competitive games. Ferguson said: “I’m always disappointed if we don’t win at home, and I certainly don’t want a sense of satisfaction if we draw at home - no matter who we are playing - but there are a lot of positives from a game against a team doing really well. “We caused them problems. The big area I felt was important was the middle of the pitch, and our central midfield players dominated that area in the early part of the game. The three centre halves and

the goalkeeper were outstanding.” Ferguson believes his squad are good enough to do well this season, but knows the players and staff need to work hard to translate that into positive results. He added: “It was important to get a reaction after the loss at AFC Wimbledon, the key to any season is to be consistent. Up to now Peterborough have been the most in the league, if we are consistent like we were at times here and in some earlier games like Blackburn then we’ll do well. “I’ve no doubt we’ve got the ability, we just need to find consistency. We’ve played eight games, and one defeat, so we’ve had an ok start. I look around my dressing room and I’ve got some good players in there, and I hope the players believe that as well.”

back to the levels of last season. “My loan was until the last game of the season so felt like I was still part of the squad, the manager and players kept in touch. That helped me get through the early stages and influenced my decision to come back.” Houghton played the final 20 minutes against Posh, and feels Rovers’ performance should give them plenty of confidence for the rest of the campaign. He added: “It was a proper footballing game, they’re a good side who we have gone toe to toe with. The manager said we’ve got to have the belief in ourselves. “We showed some good periods where we knocked the ball about and could easily have come away with three points.” Rovers are back in action at the Keepmoat Stadium on Sunday September 17 when Scunthorpe United visit. MILLERS LAND LATE DEAL FOR TOWELL Rotherham United have completed the signing of Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Richie Towell on a loan deal until the end of the season. The Millers secured a deal for the Republic of Ireland under 21 international just before the 11pm transfer deadline, as manager Paul Warne completed his second signing of the day following the earlier arrival of Manny Onariase from Brentford. Towell, who started his career at Celtic, signed a new deal with the Premier League newcomers at the end of last season, but now joins the Millers looking for regular first-team football. “I am absolutely delighted to be able to bring Richie to the club,” Warne told www.themillers.co.uk “He is a player I have looked at for a long time, after we made a concerted effort to bring him here in January. He has been on my radar ever since, and I am honoured that he has agreed to come and join us. “What attracted him to me was his unbelievable energy. He falls into the type of player that I want here, and I know he will embrace the opportunity. “By opting to leave Brighton, he has shown a real desire to go and play and I think he will fit right in with the way we want to play. “He comes from a good background, and was wanted by a number of clubs when he left Ireland to sign for Brighton. “We feel he will be a good fit for us.”

It was a busy week in the County Senior League with 18 games taking place on Wednesday night and Saturday afternoon. Premier Division It has been a quite the start to the season for Denaby United. They opened their season with an 8-1 home defeat, but their form since could not have been more of a paradox. In midweek they beat Wombwell Main 2-1, following that with a 7-0 away win over Millmoor Juniors on Saturday to make it three consecutive wins. Ainsley Finney starred for Denaby scoring five times. Those nine points are enough to give Denaby the early lead in the Premier Division. Swinton Athletic continued their good start to the season with a second win on Wednesday night. BLADES CAPTURE EXPERIENCED STRIKER United have signed experienced Championship striker Clayton Donaldson. The 33-year-old has signed a deal until the end of the season with the option for a further year. An undisclosed fee has been agreed with Birmingham City. Boss Chris Wilder commented: “We have watched Clayton a lot, most recently for Birmingham at Burton,

and it is clear that he will be a useful addition for us. He offers additional pace and power at the top end of the pitch and his Championship experience will be of value.” Yorkshireman Donaldson began his professional career at Hull City and spent time out on-loan at Harrogate Town, Scarborough and Halifax Town, prior to making his name at York

City, where he averaged just short of a goal in every two games. A season in Scotland with Hibernian followed, prior to another prolific spell back in England with Crewe Alexandra. In July 2011 the Jamaican international joined Brentford on a free transfer and during three seasons at Griffin Park he averaged better than a goal in every three games.

DEADLINE DAY DEFENDER SIGNS

United have completed the signing of promising central defender Ben Heneghan. After the Blades agreed an undisclosed fee with Motherwell, 6ft 4ins Heneghan signs a threeyear deal at Bramall Lane. The finishing touches were completed to the deal on Thursday evening. Of the 23-year-old, boss Chris Wilder commented: “It is no

secret that we’ve been after another centre half and Ben has been on our radar for sometime, we enquired about him last year. He fits our criteria and he is one we are looking forward to working with.” Heneghan began his career at Everton and spent seven years at Goodison Park, prior to moving to Stoke City in 2012. The Manchester-born defender didn’t make a

competitive appearance for the Potters but spent two seasons at Chester where he made 81 appearances, scoring six times. In June 2016, he joined Motherwell and made over 40 appearances for the SPL club last term, and has scored against Rangers this season. He is the ninth capture of the summer transfer window.

The 33-year-old turned down the chance to remain with the Bees in the summer of 2014, opting to join Birmingham City, where he has scored 33 times in 102 league starts in the Championship. The deal was signed last Thursday night, United’s second of transfer deadline day, and tenth of the summer window.

CHARITY AMBASSADORS

Following the announcement that United is working with, and supporting, two additional local charities this season, the club can confirm that players have been assigned as ambassadors to all charity partners. The club has selected Paces and Whirlow Hall Farm Trust to join the charity partnership that the Blades already have with The Sheffield Children’s Hospital, Weston Park Cancer Charity, St Luke’s Hospice, and Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. It is hoped that all six will be assisted throughout the 2017/18 campaign, with the help of the club’s players.

United have assigned a first team player and a ladies team player to each charity. The charities and their ambassadors are...

The Children’s Hospital Billy Sharp and Rosa Neary Weston Park Cancer Charity Simon Moore and Jess Houldsworth Whirlow Hall Farm Paul Coutts and Rachel Ruddach Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice Jake Wright and Nat Froggatt St Luke’s Hospice Daniel Lafferty and Jodie Hartley Paces Chris Basham and Kim Brown

United’s operations director, Dave McCarthy, commented: “Last year was the first that the club assigned a first team player to each of our nominated charities and both the players and charities appreciated the relationship. After last year’s success, we have again nominated a men’s first team player for each charity and this year, building on the success of our ladies team, we thought it was important that they were involved too. The players will be meeting representatives of the charities soon to see how they can help promote their work and how they can assist with fundraising initiatives soon.”

DEADLINE DAY MAYHEM WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder added two players to his squad on a hectic deadline day in which the club was in for five players. The Blades were successful in their pursuit of Ben Heneghan and Clayton Donaldson, but failed to sign Devante Cole, Domingos Quina and Jerome Sinclair. I would advise anyone reading this article to seek out the Bleacher Report’s piece on Wilder’s frustrating day. The news outlet was given unique access to film and document the day. Wilder describes the deadline circus as something he has never experienced during his tenure in the game. The loan signing of Sinclair from Watford was no secret to the press and fans alike in the run up to the window shutting. Wilder and his staff

described the deal as ‘done’ with the player waiting in Sheffield train station to finalise his move. However, the deal had to be scrapped hours before the deadline due to an agent dispute. The 20-year-old has returned to Watford and faces the prospect of watching from the stands until January. The failed move highlights the ever-present issue that young English footballers are being hampered in their efforts to get game time. Quina and Sinclair share the

same agent, Aidy Ward, who happens to deal with Raheem Sterling. Perhaps United should have suspected that the moves would turn sour, given the way Sterling conducted himself in the months before his move to Manchester City. Regardless, the Blades can be satisfied with the duo that did get across the line last Thursday. Heneghan is a young defender that Wilder and his staff can nurture and Donaldson provides further pace and Championship experience to the forward line.

Sheffield Wednesday have signed Joost van Aken for an undisclosed fee from Eredivisie side SC Heerenveen. The towering centre back finalised his move to Hillsborough on Wednesday morning

academy at the age of 15 and moved to Oakwell, where his career truly kicked off. He made his first team debut in 2007 as a 17-year-old in a League Cup-tie against Newcastle and went on to post 100 appearances in total for the Reds. Butterfield scored eight goals for Barnsley, with his first coming against the Owls at Hillsborough in the 2-2 draw on the opening day of the 2009/10 season. With his reputation growing in the game,

Butterfield attracted the attention of several suitors in the Championship and joined Norwich in July 2012. Loan moves to Bolton and Crystal Palace followed during the 2012/13 campaign with opportunities limited at Carrow Road. He made eight and nine appearances, respectively for the two clubs. Butterfield was back on the move in September 2013 when he joined Championship side Middlesbrough on a three-year contract.

A strong campaign at The Riverside followed where he made 32 appearances, scoring three goals – including a goal of the season contender in Boro’s 3-1 win over Birmingham. Huddersfield moved for Butterfield’s services ahead of the 2014/15 campaign and his switch to West Yorkshire proved one of success for the midfield man. He made 52 appearances for the Terriers, scored seven goals and was voted as the club’s 2014/15 Player of the Season.

Derby swooped for Butterfield in September 2015 for a reported £5m transfer fee. His first season with the Rams saw the midfielder score nine times from the engine room, including two away at Hull on his 200th Football League appearance. The popular midfielder has racked up 89 appearances for Derby in total and has now completed his loan switch to Hillsborough.

and will join his new team mates at Middlewood Road on Thursday. The 23-year-old signed his first professional contract with Heerenveen in 2013 and went on to become a key figure for the

club. His consistent and commanding performances in central defence were rewarded in 2015, when the Haarlem-born stopper signed a new threeyear deal with the top flight Dutch outfit. He made 26 appearances during the 2016/17 campaign

and scored on his final outing of the season in a 3-0 win over Sparta Rotterdam, as Heerenveen secured a mid-table finish. In total, van Aken has made 90 appearances for Heerenveen. Strong in the air and comfortable in possession, van Aken has been capped three

times at international level by the Dutch Under-21s and now adds to the competition in the Owls’ backline. Joost will wear squad number four and is eligible to make his debut when the Owls host Nottingham Forest on Saturday 9 September.

HIRST COMPLETES DREAM SCENE Prolific striker David Hirst is the final player in the Sheffield Wednesday Dream Scene painting. The forward joined the Owls in 1986 from hometown club

Barnsley and would go on to score 128 goals in 358 appearances for Wednesday, cementing his place as a crowd favourite at Hillsborough. He was a key part of the side that won the

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

After an extremely hectic weekend, taking three grand children aged 5, 6 and 8 to the Welsh coast, and then delivering my youngest son to the airport, a prelude to two years in Australia, I was glad to get chance to spend a few hours on one of my favourite venues, the beautiful River Dove in Staffordshire. Over the course of the weekend, I tore a calf muscle, (ouch) which limited my options, so I chose to park a short distance from the river, and hobble to my peg, where I sat surrounded by the pretty flowers of Himalayan Balsam and watched the water gurgle by whilst I settled in… I decided to fish the stick float, so pieced together my Sonik S4 float rod, slid an ancient Ivan Marks 3BB stick float between two rubbers, plumbed the depth carefully, and prepared to swing out the rig and watch it trot through the swim. I don’t seem to do very well in this particular swim with a float, which pains me, as it’s one of my favourite tactics in summer, and nothing beats the delightful feeling when the float slides away, and the kick of a hooked fish is transmitted back down the rod, and you never know what species it will be until you see it! Every few seconds, a pinch of maggots went into the head of the swim, hoping to draw fish from beneath a shadowy bridge, and the float spiralled down amongst them. I spent an hour trying to register a bite, changing the depth, the hook size, the bait (single maggot, double maggot, worm, caster) even the shotting pattern, but couldn’t get a single indication; which was frustrating to say the least! I have no idea why, in this one swim, the fish will not be enticed by a moving bait,

but I rarely catch on trotted baits here, and it only seems to be this one particular run! It was time to try something else… The float rod packed away, I unsheathed the matching S4 feeder rod, and threaded the line through a 2oz tip. There was just a touch of colour in the water, and enough flow to put a slight curve in the tip, so it was perfect for small river fishing. A small Kamasan Black Cap feeder, taped to reduce the number of holes, was tethered with a snap swivel, and stopped by a bead a couple of feet from a size 16 barbless hook, upon which was impaled a pair of fat, white maggots. The feeder was filled quickly, lobbed out into the flow, the rod set on the rest as the feeder hit the river bed, and the line tightened; perfect. Surprisingly, after an hour of moving baits through the swim and getting no bites at all, no sooner had I sat down, than the tip whacked around, but perhaps not unsurprisingly, I missed it! It was a really positive bite which had me scrabbling for the rod, but as I picked it up, the fish had gone! The feeder was refilled and recast, and I sat poised over the rod waiting for another chance… It took a few seconds, but then came the familiar rasping on the tip, a sure sign that a grayling was to blame, before it rattled around and I connected with the first fish of the day… as expected, a silvered, pink hued ‘Lady of the Stream’, an immaculate grayling, and in perfect condition. The second and third fish were also grayling, fine fish of just under a pound, and the next a beautifully marked brown trout, which looked as if it could have been one of the fish stocked by the club on the opposite bank. I’d carried on firing a few gentiles in at the head of the swim, and suddenly started to get incredibly fast bites which could only mean that dace had moved in. I dropped down to a size 20 hook and single maggot to try and compete! I’d never caught dace from this area before, so it was pleasing to pit my limited wits against such sporting fish, and a steady string of skittish fish came to hand, the biggest a netter of around ten ounces as the morning progressed… Once the sun is high in the sky, as with many rivers, the swim goes quiet, and bites become more sporadic. I changed back to a size 16 hook, pinched on a lobworm tail, secured it with a red maggot, and left it to sink just out of the main flow. Ten minutes passed before I got any sign of interest, the merest flick of the tip, barely different to the motion caused by suspended debris, and then it went right around as the worm was hoovered up by a feisty perch; lovely! The worm baits were taken readily by perch for the next couple of hours, with odd trout of decent size interrupting on occasion, before that sport also slowed… Reverting to single maggot bought more dace, but

then I connected with something which was certainly going to strain a size 20 barbless to 1lb 12oz bottom! Whatever it was stayed on the river bed, using the current to its advantage, thudding shakes of its head putting my terminal tackle under real pressure. I thought it might have been a hefty chub which are known to frequent the stretch, but after a few minutes, once I’d gained some line, I saw the flecked sides of a much bigger brown trout, and if you’ve ever caught a decent ‘brownie’ you’ll appreciate the reds, browns, and golds that puncture the silvery flanks; they are a truly beautiful sight in the water, and on the bank! Eventually, I got the net under it and lifted it onto the mat, and noted that the hook was only just anchored; I was lucky to land this one! It went back safely, and the fishing resumed, with a good number of additional fish hitting the bank. I had to change hook size and bait constantly to keep bites coming, but in the sunshine, it was a pleasure, not a chore… The big trout proved to be one of the best fish of the day, a few hours spent relaxing in blazing sunshine beneath my brolly, listening to the bees humming away behind me as they gathered nectar from the flowers, and watching kingfishers flash past beneath the bridge. By the time came to limp back to the van, I’d caught dozens of fish, grayling, trout, dace, and perch, and enjoyed every second of my visit… I really believe being tucked away on a quiet riverbank, surrounded by summer meadow flowers, alongside a river full of fish, in summer, cannot be beaten if you want to relax, and really appreciate what fishing is all about… tight lines.
