ST LEGER FESTIVAL WEEK BEGINS! The countdown is on to the biggest event in the Doncaster calendar with St Leger Festival Week just around the corner. As racing lovers descend on the town for four days of world class horse racing from 13-16th September at Doncaster Racecourse, including the world’s oldest Classic the St Leger, there’s plenty of other activities taking place across the borough. St Leger Festival Week, which runs from Friday 8th to Sunday 17th September, officially kicks off with the DNweekeND. Doncaster’s free festival of art and performance takes place in Sir Nigel

Gresley Square between Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th September. Visitors can enjoy plenty of exciting performances including street theatre, dance and circus skills alongside workshops, foods and crafts. For those making their way back into the town centre after a day at the races, or for those who just want to enjoy some live music in a fantastic setting, Regent Square Live offers three evenings of music. Set in the mid-19th century garden square of Regent Square, there’ll be food, a bar and live music including 80’s pop, jazz, funk and tributes to Paloma Faith and the Beatles. Make sure you go along

between Thursday 14th and Saturday 16th September. There’s plenty of other live music on offer throughout St Leger Festival Week, whatever your taste. The Summer of Love is a two day festival of live music across two venues; The Leopard in the town centre and Hatfield Water Park. Dozens of live acts will be performing on Friday 15th and Saturday 16th September, including a headline set from 90’s Britpop band Dodgy. If classical music is more your thing, Doncaster Dome will play host to ‘The Magic of the Opera’ on Sunday 17th September. The show for all the family

will feature some of the best songs from the most popular operas, as well as the chance to see Doncaster’s very own Lesley Garrett perform live. Doncaster has a thriving live entertainment scene and of course during the St Leger Festival Week there’s plenty on offer. The Fringe Festival will take place throughout September at regular venues including The Social, Cask Corner, The Masons Arms, Doncaster Brewery, Manana Manana and The Leopard. They’ve all got packed line ups of music, entertainment and comedy across the month. There are more details on these events, plus

Boxer lends his weight to help prevent suicide A famous boxer and former world champion is supporting a campaign in Sheffield to help prevent suicide. Johnny Nelson, who held the WBO Cruiserweight title from 1999-2005 and is an ambassador for Sheffield Mind, is encouraging people to speak out about their mental health, especially men. He said: “I know from personal experience how mental health issues can affect someone, to the point where things got so bad for me that I considered throwing in the towel. “I have always encouraged men to talk about their issues, particularly in my profession where men don’t open up about how they are feeling. I campaign for greater mental health awareness and am willing to admit that talking about my feelings to people that I trusted was crucial in my recovery. “You have to be strong to admit when you need help, talking doesn’t mean you are weak it just means that you want to get better.” Nelson joins Sheffield City Council and other local organisations in encouraging people to talk about their mental health, in a campaign that starts on World Suicide Prevention day, 10 September. Suicide is the biggest killer in men under the age of 50, with 4,997 men committing suicide in 2015 alone. A local family who set up a support charity after their son’s suicide in 2015, joins them. Suzanne McAllister, from S11

area, said: “Dan was coming up to his final exams at university, he was intelligent, popular and sociable. Even when we asked him, he never admitted to feeling stressed. “The days before he died, Dan seemed happy; he was looking forward to coming home and his plans for the summer. “It’s difficult to put in to words how we felt in the days and months after Dan’s death, anger, confusion, guilt, but underlying was a devastating sadness, and the struggle to accept our new ‘reality’. “We set up SToRMS to help young people, men in particular, to open up about how they are feeling and to seek help. We are creating a strong support system in the community to help others like Dan who don’t show the classic signs, do not access mental health services, and yet may be at risk of suicide. “It has been a way for us to keep Dan alive and try to do something positive in his name.” Sheffield City Council’s

Suicide Prevention campaign can be seen around the city on local advertising boards and in football club match day programmes. Teams of council officers and NHS staff will be outside the Town Hall on Wednesday 13 September handing out information and advice on the support that is available.

For support, call Samaritans on Freephone 116123. Information about wider support available in Sheffield can be found at www. sheffieldmentalhealth.org.uk For more information on SToRMS visit their website www.stormsdmc. org and their Facebook page www.facebook.com/ TheDanMcAllisterFoundation/ Tweet your support and look out for information online on the following hashtags: #StayAlive #SuicidePrevention

Here is what one of our successful quitters had to say… “The main reason for me to stop smoking was initially my health. I knew it was deteriorating, the other reasons were my children, my wider family and friends. It goes without saying also that the issue of money is always a factor as cigarettes inevitably go up in price. I needed to free myself from this awful addiction. The one to one support I received was amazing and the nicotine replacement that the adviser and I agreed on was perfect for my level of addiction. The support I received at the weekly meetings and the carbon monoxide readings helped a lot. It was great and I am so pleased that I managed to quit and can I say proud to be a

2017 ST LEGER STAKES TROPHY UNVEILED DAYS BEFORE COVETED RACE

FREE

No BookinENTRY g required

Wedding Open Day

The coveted St Leger stakes trophy has had, as tradition dictates, its central element re-designed for this weeks 2017 William Hill St Leger Festival by Sheffield Silversmith Chris Knight. Since 2007, when the new trophy was designed after the construction and redevelopment of Doncaster Racecoourse, a silversmith or sculptor receives the commission each year to create a new central element to the trophy – the part of the trophy which the lucky winner gets to keep – which, this year, renowned silversmith and original designer Chris Knight brings to life with his creative talent. “Our Perpetual Trophy has over the years become something of

a talking point and we are delighted with this year’s Yorkshire inspired element designed by Alison Counsell and manufactured by Chris Knight, both from Sheffield,” said Abby Chandler Head of Marketing at Doncaster Racecourse. “And, so that everyone involved in the 2017 William Hill St Leger Trophy win can have a small memento, a graphic image of the design has been engraved on the awards for the winning trainer, jockey and groom.” Alison has taken inspiration from the original trophy in 2007 which encompassed elements of Yorkshire including the iconic Yorkshire rose. This has been represented for the 2017 trophy by the use of silver with the

petals of the rose rippling around the dish like ribbons. “Racegoers on the Saturday, William Hill St Leger Day, will be able to see this iconic trophy presented after the world’s oldest classic has been run,” said Abby. “It’s always a special moment in our racing calendar at Doncaster and this fantastic trophy by Alison and Chris will only serve to reinforce its heritage and history in the horse racing industry.” The William Hill St Leger Stakes, part of the British Champions Series, will take place at 3.35pm Selected tickets are still available and can be obtained by visiting www.doncaster-racecourse.co.uk/st-leger/

STAYING SAFE IN YOUR HOME Older people are one of the groups of our population most vulnerable to accidents, particularly in and around the home. Those over 65 years of age are most at risk, suffering both the highest mortality rate and the most severe injuries. The great majority of accidents involving older people are falls. The most serious accidents involving older people usually happen on the stairs or in the kitchen. The bedroom and the living room are the most common locations for accidents in general. If you feel at risk or know someone that is, this is how you can help. Avoiding falls at home Remove clutter and items left lying around. You need a clear space to move around your home safely. Organise your home so that climbing, stretching and bending are kept to a

minimum, and to avoid bumping into things. Get help to do things that you’re unable to do safely on your own. Tidy up those trailing wires – we all have more electric appliances these days and it’s easy to trip over the wiring. Use coiled kettle flexes or a cordless kettle and try not to carry hot liquids further than necessary. (Re-arrange tea/coffeemaking area to accommodate this.) Also check carpets for frayed edges and use non-slip mats and rugs. Mop up spillages immediately to avoid slippery surfaces. Don’t walk on slippery floors in socks or tights. Wear wellfitting shoes and slippers that are in good condition and support the ankle. Avoid wearing loose-fitting, trailing clothes that might trip you up . Use grab rails and places to sit down in the bathroom and kitchen could be an advantage if dizzy spells occur. It’s easy to loose balance through sudden

movements, e.g. getting out of bed or a chair too quickly. Make sure you can see clearly using highwattage light bulbs in lamps and torches. When did you last have a sight test? You qualify for a free NHS-funded sight test if: • You are aged 60 or over • You are registered as partially sighted (sight impaired) or blind (severely sight impaired) • You have been diagnosed with diabetes or glaucoma • You are 40 or over and your mother, father, brother, sister, son or daughter has been diagnosed with glaucoma • You have been advised by an eye doctor (ophthalmologist) that you’re at risk of glaucoma • You are also entitled to a free NHS sight test if you are on certain benefits.

• A hologram which contains the word “Ten” and changes to “Pounds” when the note is tilted. • A hologram of the coronation crown which appears 3D and multi-coloured when the note is tilted. • A book-shaped copper foil patch which contains the letters JA. • Micro-lettering beneath the Queen’s portrait with tiny letters and numbers that are visible under a microscope. • The words “Bank of England” printed in intaglio (raised ink) along the top of the note.

Association upport S NEW £10 NOTES IN BANKS THIS WEEK CITIZEN SPACE Volunteers Required The new plastic £10 note which follows the polymer £5 note will be issued on 14th September and has a portrait of Jane Austen on the 200th anniversary of the author’s death. It is also the first Bank of England note to include a tactile feature to help visually impaired people. The £10 note will be made of the same material as the £5 note, which means it also contains some traces of animal fat an issue which caused concern for vegans and some religious groups when it was launched last September. A petition to ban the note attracted more than 100,000 signatures but the new £10 will again contain some tallow, which is derived from meat products. A new polymer £20 note featuring artist JMW Turner is due to be issued by 2020, but there are no plans to replace the current £50 note, which was released in 2011. The Bank of England says the new £10 notes contain sophisticated security features and are expected to last five years, which is two-and-a-half times longer than the current note. Security features of new £10 note: • A see-through window featuring the Queen’s portrait. • Winchester Cathedral shown in gold foil on the front of the note and silver on the back. • A quill at the side of the window which changes from purple to orange.

Ward Priorities – Sheffield City Council Closes Wednesday 14 February 2018 We would like to know what people living in Sheffield feel should be the priorities for their ward councillors. Each ward in the city has 3 councillors who work to improve things for local people and represent them when decisions are made in the Town Hall. If your councillors are better informed about the things that are important to you then they can focus their attention on specific issues in your neighbourhood. The information you provide in this short questionnaire will help them identify the service providers, community organisations and local residents they need to work with. Visit https://sheffield. citizenspace.com/communities-businessstrategy/wardpriorities for more info and to give your views by Wednesday 14 February 2018, or contact Matthew Rush on matthew.rush@sheffield.gov.uk, 0114 2735708.

DRONE PILOTS WANTED Competent drone pilots based in the South Yorkshire area are sought for a new group that uses uav’s to search for missing dogs. Drone SAR For Lost Dogs UK, the idea of pilots and dog owners Craig Timblin and Graham Burton, has already gathered volunteers all over the country but needs people to cover this area. Craig, who is Civil Aviation Authority qualified and runs a drone photography and film services firm in Devon, was called in to help in the search for retired guide dog Indy, who went missing in July while on a walk. “While I was out I had this idea and wondered if it could be done more frequently for missing dogs,” He had already seen them used as search and rescue tools by the police and other emergency services and was sure they could be just as useful helping to locate dogs that had run off. At the same time another pilot on the search, Graham Burton from Wales had the same idea of setting up a group of pilots. So the Drone SAR For Lost Dogs UK Facebook group was started. “Just over a month later we have registered our 140th pilot,” he said. “It has taken off a lot faster than I thought it would.” Now there are volunteer UAV fliers in locations all over the UK ready to go out and help search for missing pets. Craig believes the use could also help to combat negative attitudes towards drones, especially when people realise how much the pilots can see and how much ground they can cover. “This is a really good use of the technology,” he said. He has also learned useful techniques from dog behaviorists on what to do if a dog is spotted. “There is a common misconception that if you see a dog running you start to call it. Then it runs away.” But experts suggest sitting down and looking away from the dog, which is probably frightened. Being able to put a drone up in the area also gives the searchers a better idea of where to concentrate their efforts. “We’ve had a couple of successes,” he said. “We’re not able to attribute anything straight to the drone yet.” But pilots have reported seeing something in an area and missing pets have later been found. Commercial pilots and hobbyists are welcome but their UAVs must be flown according to CAA guidelines. Potential volunteers can register their interest through the Facebook group – Drone SAR For Lost Dogs UK.

EXPRESS BY NAME. QUALITY BY NATURE! Words by Marc Cooper

Last Friday we visited PizzaExpress on Ecclesall Road to sample some authentic Italian Cuisine in the heart of Sheffield. The restaurant has recently undergone a contemporary refurbishment crowned with an al fresco dining area, where the lovely setting of Eccelsall Road gives a genuinely continental setting to eat or relax with a drink. However the typical British summer weather forced us take a table inside in the modern open-plan interior. We started the evening with a glass of proscecco whilst we looked over the varied menu covering different types of pizza, pasta, and salads, opting for the Bruschetta Originale and Dough Balls Doppio to start. The impeccibly presented Bruschetta Originale consisted of PizzaExpress signature dough brushed with garlic butter and topped with chopped fresh tomato, red onion, fresh basil and pesto providing plenty of colour and a real taste of Italy. For the main course we selected the Zapparoli Romana which is the summer special pizza that includes Chicken, hot soft

'nduja sausage, mozzarella, garlic oil and Gran Milano cheese with red Roquito pearls and parsley, and the traditional Cannelloni. Both dishes provided modern twists on classic Italian dishes with portion sizes capable of filling at least three of the four tenors. The Italians are as famous for their warm reception as they are their sumptuous dishes and PizzaExpress doesn’t disappoint in backing up their food with great customer service.

The menu changes throughout the year so there will be always something new to try at PizzaExpress even if it becomes your regular Italian in Sheffield, which I personal recommend that it does. PARSON CROSS ROADS TO CLOSE AS FREE CYCLING TASTER EVENT COMES TO SHEFFIELD Part of Parson Cross will be closed to motor vehicles on Sunday morning for the first in a series of free cycling taster sessions in the city. Sections of Holgate Road, Holgate Avenue and Holgate Cross will be closed from 10am to 12pm for the Let’s Ride Pop-up event, where cyclists of all ages and abilities are invited to ride on a traffic-free circuit as many times as they want, at a pace that suits them. The session is the first of three monthly events which complement the existing cycling activity in the city, following on from the success of July’s HSBC UK City Ride. It is the first time an event such as this has been held in Parson Cross and organisers are hoping it will encourage more people to take to two wheels. Free bikes will be available to hire on the day from Russell’s Bike Shed on Holgate Avenue, on a first come, first served basis. British Cycling volunteers will be on hand for the duration of the event to ensure peace of mind and safety for all riders. Helen Webster, British Cycling’s partnership manager for Sheffield, said: “From complete beginners to those wanting to take things up a gear, the Lets Ride Pop-up

sessions will be an ideal way for people to discover or rediscover a love of cycling, and to improve their skills. “Regardless of age or ability, people will be able to come down and build up their confidence with the help of trained British Cycling coaches and volunteers.” Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “These traffic-free rides in Parson Cross are a great way for local people to gain confidence on two wheels, get involved in the community or just have some fun with the family. “While cycling is already very popular in the city, we want to encourage more Sheffielders to take up cycling, and I hope that many local residents will come along and kick-start a passion for pedalling.” For more information, visit letsride.co.uk Can you spare a couple of hours a month to help out at Let’s Ride Pop-up Sheffield? Email letsridepop-up@britishcycling.org.uk to register your interest.

JOB SEEKERS WALKING THEIR WAY TO SUCCESS TO GET A MAKEOVER ‘Walking for Purpose has helped me improve my health and given me the skills to get job interviews. I still need to improve my general appearance and have the chance to wear a suit so I can make a better impression on a prospective employer’. This is the experience of Michael who has been attending a job club with a difference called Walking for Purpose. In a new partnership with local charity Suit Works, Michael and his fellow job seeker, Tim, will receive a free makeover. The scheme, run by Sheffield City Council and various voluntary sector partners, offers those who are looking for work the opportunity to gain valuable skills and training while being active with a gentle walk. A participant meets friendly staff at a local venue and walk with them to different training providers, employers or a workshop. The founder of Suit Works, Vanda Kewley, has also enlisted the free services of traditional barbers, Rapscallion. Vanda said: “We have found that giving people a good quality shirt, tie and shoes to attend their interview can increase their self-esteem and self-respect. This can often improve their chances of getting a job. I am really excited to have persuaded Rapscallion to style the men’s hair. We hope the transformation will help Michael and Tim towards a better future and look forward to working with Walking for Purpose team in the future.” The makeover comes at the end of the first ten-week course. There will be further walks and anyone who is unemployed is welcome to attend. To find out more call 0114 2734266 or visit the website here.

WIN TICKETS TO SEE AWARD WINNING COMEDIAN, WRITER, PANELIST & AUTHOR ANDY HAMILTON AT SHEFFIELD CITY HALL Award winning comedian and comedy writer, and the man behind some of the finest TV and radio comedies of our time, Andy Hamilton, is so highly in demand that he must return to the road once again with his sell-out show, Change Management and he’ll be performing at Sheffield City Hall on Tues 26th September. In his 60 years on this planet, Andy has experienced many changes. For instance, he was once a 6’4” tall professional basketball player, until a tree fell on him. If you’re feeling flustered because of flux, Andy will teach you how to cope with the changes we have seen and the changes yet to come. Contains mild peril. Andy is co-creator / writer of Outnumbered (BBC1), What We Did On Our Holiday (BBC Films), Ballot Monkeys (Channel 4) and Drop The Dead Donkey (Channel 4), star of Old Harry’s Game (Radio 4) and regular guest on The News Quiz, I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue, Have I Got News For You, QI as well as numerous other TV and radio credits. ROCK GIG TO RAISE THOUSANDS AS THANK YOU TO HOSPITAL STAFF FOR CARE OF TINY TWINS A doting dad of premature twins is staging a major Sheffield Hospitals Charity rock show to say thank you for the care they received. Ben Orrah’s childhood sweetheart, Paula, gave birth to tiny twins Polly and Logan at just 32 weeks, meaning a long intensive care stay at the city’s Jessop Wing. He said: “Paula loved being pregnant. She had a bump and she was so proud of it, she beamed like I’ve never seen before. We used to sit for hours feeling the twins kick, it was such a wonderful experience. Being aware that twins can be sometimes be born prematurely, at around 32 weeks I started to relax as I felt that we were almost there, but three days later Paula called me at work and said that she was worried her waters had broken. When we got to the hospital I saw two incubator trays, with the tiniest little hats that you could imagine.” “Paula was in labour, and Polly arrived first, weighing 3lb 9 oz. and Logan followed weighing 3lb 15 oz. I couldn’t believe we had two perfect little babies - one boy and one girl. I was in dreamland. “As the weeks went by, Polly and Logan had plenty of ups and downs. But as we entered our sixth week on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and we neared Christmas, the twins both seemed to pick up all of a sudden and were making great progress. To our surprise our babies were going to be allowed to come home in time for Christmas. It was amazing. “The journey we went on from birth to getting our babies home was one of the toughest things we have ever had to do, yet we were very lucky. The staff on the Neonatal Unit were an amazing support to us and now we want to try our best to give something back to others.”

“It’s because of this I have felt compelled to try and do something positive for the unit and to fundraise for Sheffield Hospitals Charity to help all the poorly babies and the amazing staff and parents.” Ben’s rock gig is to raise funds for Sheffield Hospitals Charity to help babies and their families being cared for in the Jessop Wing. It will take place on 17 November – World Prematurity Day - at Corporation. Tickets cost £5 and are available from www.fearlies.bandcamp.com/merch or by emailing the band on fearlies@hotmail.co.uk

BACK TO BACK FOR MILLERS RICHIE Towell made himself an instant hero with the Millers faithful as his late strike earned Rotherham United back-to-back victories following a five-goal thriller with Bury. The Brighton loanee latched onto a long ball forward to power home from the edge of the box with just minutes remaining after Jermaine Beckford and Nathan Cameron had cancelled out Kieffer Moore’s fifth and sixth goals of the season, either side of the interval. Following their impressive away day victory at Portsmouth last weekend, Millers chief Paul Warne made just one change to his starting line-up for the visit of the Shakers. Slovakian Under 21 international ‘keeper Marek Rodak was given an opportunity to impress between the Millers sticks following his season-long loan move from Fulham while Warne kept faith with his 4-1-4-1 system, which was employed to great effect at Fratton Park, as the likes of Ben Purrington, Richard Wood and Shaun Cummings were rewarded with another start following their defensive shut out on the south coast. The visitors had the first sight of goal when Josh Laurent and Harry Bunn superbly exchanged passes to pave the way for the latter to advance towards the Rotherham box before Will Vaulks’ attempted clearance ricocheted off Rohan Ince as the ball flew narrowly wide of the home goal. Vaulks was in the thick of the early action and after Bury failed to clear their lines, the ex-Falkirk midfielder fired a skimming drive from just outside the box which forced Joe Murphy into a smart, smothered save before Moore nodded harmlessly wide of the target from Taylor’s corner, in the next phase of play. Michael Ihiekwe showed great reading of the game with a timely intervention to prevent Beckford racing clear before Bury failed to deal with Taylor’s free-kick, at the other end, and skipper Lee Frecklington put the ball back into the danger area where Richard Wood fired a snap shot from point-blank range which stung the palms of Murphy. Moments later, the Shakers were indebted to Murphy for keeping the Millers at bay with a superb one-handed save as Williams hacked at fresh air initially before getting another bite of the cherry with a fierce half-volley, from the edge of the box, which was arrowing into the roof of the net before Murphy’s heroics in the

visitors goal. The Millers were looking the most likely and Moore almost capitalised on Greg Leigh’s error to slide towards goal and although Murphy was quick off his line to block his effort, any goal would have been ruled out for offside. Vaulks was the next to test the visitors’ keeper with a flick towards goal after Wood caused havoc in the Shakers defence but once again, Murphy was on-hand to deny the Millers before Rodak was called into action for the first time when Beckford tried his luck from distance but the young ‘keeper was well-positioned to snuff out the danger. However, Rotherham got the better of Murphy, as they were finally rewarded for their early superiority by taking the lead on 20 minutes. Vaulks’ arrowed ball over the top saw Moore get on the wrong side of Alex Whitmore, to firstly put the ball under his spell by plucking the ball out of the sky before the Ipswich loanee showed great composure to slide the ball past the advancing Murphy, to find the heart of the visitors goal. Just past the half-hour mark, the Millers came within a whisker of doubling their advantage when Frecklington got the better of Laurent before embarking on a trademark lung-bursting run to put Taylor in the clear, who broke the offside trap, and with Murphy racing from his line, the ex-Peterborough winger rounded the visitors’ keeper but from the tightest of angles, he could only fire into the side netting. However, the home side were punished for their miss almost immediately when Bury levelled matters. Ryan Lowe did superbly to dig out a cross and fellow strike partner Beckford showed all his experience to ghost in between two defenders to powerfully head home from six yards giving Rodak no chance. The Millers responded superbly to the setback and the ever-dangerous Taylor raced clear and with the Bury rearguard slow to respond, his timely slide-rule pass gave Frecklington a glimpse of goal whereby the home skipper fired a dipping effort which narrowly cleared the visitors crossbar. Just prior to the interval, Warne was forced into a reshuffle as Cummings unable to continue following treatment and Vaulks was asked to fill the right-back berth with the AESSEAL New York Stadium faithful getting their first glimpse of Towell, who was asked to play just behind Moore. In a late flurry from the

home side prior to the break, Frecklington had a snap shot deflected behind following Moore’s neat touch before Towell drilled an effort which was bravely blocked en-route to goal by Ince. Following the interval, Nathan Cameron became the first to see yellow for kicking the ball away as Rotherham attempted to take a quick throw-in before Rotherham took a firm grip on the game, by regaining the lead nine minutes into the half. There looked little danger while Frecklington and Potter played keep ball near the touchline but Vaulks clipped a ball over the Bury rearguard and Taylor, who seemingly mis-controlled at first, floated a cross to the far stick which saw Moore power a downward header which beat the outstretched hand of Murphy to double his and his team’s tally for the afternoon. With Moore off for the pitch following a head injury, the Millers had Wood to thank for a brave block after Beckford took aim from the edge of the box before Taylor fizzed a free-kick from a tight angle which had Murphy flying across goal as it fizzed narrowly wide of the target. The Millers squandered an opportunity to add a third goal when Whitmore’s mis-hit clearance was pounced upon by Williams, as Frecklington added to Whitmore’s woes by ghosting past him to burst into the box but the talismanic midfielder arguably chose the wrong option as he fired a cross-cum-shot harmlessly wide- with Moore et al waiting for a tap-in, on the edge of the six-yard box. Moments later, Rotherham were again punished for the inability to kill off the visitors when a long punt into the box was met by the head of sub Michael Smith, who flicked on into the path of Cameron, who looked decidedly offside, but the Bury centrehalf kept his nerve to head into the corner of the home net. The Lancastrians were buoyed by their second equaliser and Ince’s timely pass gave sub Mihai Dobre the opportunity to strike a low effort but Rodak got his body behind his shot. The Millers soon regained their composure and Williams’ shrugged off the attentions of two defenders to fire an effort which was deflected behind by Cameron before Moore failed to get a clean connection as his pea-roller from the edge of the box was straight down the throat of Murphy. Rovers fell to defeat at Northampton as they were made to pay for a slow start which saw the home side go ahead after just 21 seconds. Darren Ferguson made three changes, with Harry Toffolo, Rodney Kongolo and Liam Mandeville all coming into the starting XI. It was Northampton’s first match under Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, and he had clearly got his side fired up - and they scored with their first attack. They broke down the left and George Smith’s cross found Matt Crooks who turned the ball home. Rovers looked to get back into the game with Tommy Rowe getting a shot away, but the home side controlled much of the possession in the opening 20 minutes - though neither goalkeeper were forced into a save. The most notable moment for Rovers fans was a five-minute delay while an injured assistant was replaced by the fourth official. Rovers came back into the game as it approached the half-hour mark. John Marquis was squeezed out after 23 minutes when he was looking to get a shot away, and three minutes later a great move down the right resulted in Matty Blair delivering a great cross from the right which zipped across goal agonisingly too far ahead of Marquis and Tommy Rowe. Ben Whiteman found Liam Mandeville in the area, but the forward was squeezed out before he could get a shot away, moments later Tyler Garratt was unable to get the power on a shot to trouble Matt Ingram. Whiteman went into the book after 31 minutes for a foul on Matt Grimes. The home player took the resulting free-kick, but it did not beat the wall. The home side carved their best chance since the frantic opening with 39 minutes on the clock, but Crooks’ effort ended up in the stands with Rovers fans. Crooks was

by some distance the Cobblers’ danger man, and almost got another in stoppage time with a diving header which went just wide of Ian Lawlor’s post. Ferguson made just one change at the break, with James Coppinger coming on in place of Toffolo. Rovers also moved to a 4-4-2 formation Rovers started well, with Marquis caught offside in the opening seconds as he looked to break down the left, with Ingram out quickly to nick the ball off the head of Mandeville. Marquis thought he was fouled in the area when he went down under a challenge after collecting the ball in the area. Joe Wright looped a header just over after 51 minutes after the ball was played back into the area following a free-kick from the left. Ferguson made a double change on the hour mark. Jordan Houghton and Alfie May come on, with Garratt and Mandeville coming off. The chances really started to come after 70 minutes, starting when Marquis did well to keep the ball in and pull it back for May - his effort was deflected wide for the first of a series of five corners inside four minutes. Some determined defending from the home side kept them at bay, with Kongolo seeing a shot blocked, home defender George Smith nicking the ball off the feet of Matty Blair, Butler heading over and Rowe flicking an effort towards goal which was kept out by a combination of Ingram and the woodwork. Coppinger stung the palms of Ingram with a powerful low effort after 79 minutes, but the ball just would not fall for an attacking player.Rovers continued to push, with Ingram pulling off a spectacular save to tip a Whiteman effort over the bar in the closing stages.

Manager Darren Ferguson will be looking for a reaction from his players at Rochdale on Tuesday. Rovers travel to face a Dale side without a win so far this season. Ferguson knows that his team will have to start the game a lot better than they did at the weekend, but is confident Rovers can bounce back. “I thought we were much better in the second half at the weekend, and Copps came on and played very well, I was pleased with his performance, and hopefully him and the team can come away from that and perform like that. We’ve had a good training day and are all ready for the game, the players are in good spirits and we know what we need to change, certain things I’ve seen I need to change within the squad, but I’ve got good numbers. All the stats are positive towards us, apart from the main one which is scoring more goals a game, we can’t keep saying we should’ve done this and could’ve done that, we need to do it, and the boys have it in them.”

game in the balance, Rotherham turned defence into attack in the blink of an eye and sub Anthony Forde tried his luck from the edge of the box and with the ball arching towards goal, Whitmore came out of nowhere to head clear and preserve parity. However, Rotherham took the lead for the third and decisive time when Rodak punted a ball forward and with no Bury defender taking charge, the ball was flicked on into the path of Towell, who calmly latched onto the ball on the edge of the box to stroke a low-effort which whistled past the outstretched hand of Murphy to nestle into the bottom corner of the visitors net.

September is always a busy time in the County Senior League and this September is no exception, with two game-days scheduled over the past week. Premier Division AFC Penistone Church Reserves sit atop the Premier Division after back-to-back wins this week. A brace from Sam Scrivens helped inspire them to a 3-0 midweek win over North Gawber Colliery. They followed that with an 8-2 win over second placed Denaby United on the weekend, with goals from Wayne Hughes (2), Tim Council (2), Tom Adams (2), James Stafford and Reece High. Jubilee Sports heaped more woe on Denaby Main, as they beat them 18-1 at Chaucer School. Jordan Livett starred for Jubilee, scoring an incredible seven goals. Jubilee had previously beaten Oughtibridge WMFC 3-2 at the same venue on Wednesday night. Goals from Tom Hardman and Niall Cairns gave Millmoor Juniors their first win of the season, as they beat Handsworth Parramore Reserves 2-1 at Grange Park. Millmoor had been beaten 7-0 by 2015/16 champions Frecheville at home midweek. Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves had a tough week, as they were beaten 3-1 at home to Handsworth Parramore Reserves on Wednesday night, and then they fell 4-1 to Grimethorpe Sports on Saturday. Houghton Main got back to winning ways with a 2-1 away win over fellow mid-tablers South Kirkby Colliery. Division One Newly promoted Dodworth Miners Welfare made it four wins from four, with a comfortable 3-0 home victory over Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915. Also newly promoted are Sheffield Medics, who remain in second place, despite losing 3-2 at home to Sheffield Bankers on Wednesday evening. Stocksbridge Park Steels Development picked up their first point of the season on Wednesday, as they drew 1-1 with Silkstone United. They could not build on that on the weekend though, as they fell to a defeat at the Yorkshire NU Build Stadium against Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves. Wickersley followed last weeks’ 6-4 win over Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves, with another high-scoring game. This time however, they only got a point as they drew 3-3 with Brinsworth Whitehill. Hepworth United claimed their first win of the season, as they beat AFC Dronfield 4-3 in a thrilling encounter at Gosforth Fields. High Green Villa made it two wins from three games played, as they beat Caribbean Sports 2-0 away from home. Division Two Boynton Sports remain in the driving seat in Division Two, following a fourth straight victory, this time it came in the form of a 5-1 home win over Swinton Athletic Reserves. Ryan Becks of New Bohemians had quite the week. Firstly, he scored twice in New Bohemians’ 4-3 midweek loss to AFC Dronfield Reserves. That was just a start for him though, as he scored four times to inspire his side to a 5-2 weekend win over North Gawber Colliery Reserves. Goals from Joel Hickling (2), Ross Edwards and Danny Howe gave Wombwell Main Development a 4-3 away win over Swinton Athletic Reserves. Ross Edwards was again on the score-sheet again at the weekend, alongside Daryl Smith, as Wombwell beat Working Wonders 2-1 at the Dorothy Hyman Stadium.

NEW BOY’S DOUBLE BLUNTS BLACK CATS Two debut strikes from Clayton Donaldson earned the Blades a first away victory of the season. The Yorkshireman scored in both halves and few can deny Chris Wilder’s side deserved the three points. The striker, signed on transfer deadline day from Birmingham City, replaced the injured Lavery in the only change from the pre-international break win over Derby. Honeyman whipped in two free-kicks in the opening 15 minutes but United started well at the Stadium of Light. Freeman shot over from 25 yards after Fleck won possession before the Blades scored a first away goal of the season. Just after the 20-minute mark United broke from a Sunderland attack and thanks to neat control and a pass from Sharp, DONALDSON cut inside Wilson before beating goalkeeper Ruiter at his near post. The goal quietened the majority of the stadium, the exception being the Unitedites high in the ground.

Grabban fired over from distance but the Blades went close to a second on 31 minutes when Duffy’s deft cross was met by Donaldson’s head but this time Ruiter tipped over. United remained on top for the remainder of the half but the final chance saw Vaughan’s side volley fly wide from Grabban’s cross. The Blades continued the impressive first half in the early stages of the second period as Freeman and Stevens put the home side under pressure from wide areas. Opportunities around the box, though, were rare. Sunderland’s appeals for a penalty following Freeman’s tackle on Williams were waved away and Wilder made a double change with Lundstram and Brooks taking over from Duffy and Sharp. Brooks was lively and a major force in United doubling the lead on 77 minutes. The young midfielder carefully threaded a pass through the Sunderland defence for DONALDSON to run on to and he doubled his tally with

an impressive leftfooted effort, curling around Ruiter’s right hand.Donaldson celebrated before pulling up injured and he was replaced by Evans before the game restarted. The Sunderland fans were showing their displeasure whilst the United supporters enjoyed the day. In the final ten minutes the Blades continued to be the dominant force and went close again on 86 minutes. Stevens and Brooks were both involved before an Evans shot was deflected and clipped the top of the crossbar. Five minutes of added time was not welcomed by either side but Sunderland were given a glimmer of hope following a Lundstram foul. McManaman whipped in a freekick from the right and RODWELL’s glancing header beat Blackman. Sunderland showed a little urgency late on but the Blades comfortably held on to secure the victory.

WHAT DO THE CHANGES MEAN WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH

The landscape of Sheffield United’s boardroom changed dramatically this week as it was announced that Simon and Scott McCabe would no longer be directors at the club. The change means that there will no longer be a McCabe on the clubs board. A statement from the club has revealed that since promotion Prince Abdullah and his advisors have ‘demonstrated a desire to increase their involvement in directing and overseeing SUFC’s management.’ The news is likely to excite Blades fans, as many had begun to doubt the influence and commitment of His Royal Highness. The initial buzz that swept around the club and its fan base after his purchase of a 50% stake in the club soon wore off. The promise

of ‘game-changing investment’ followed by a number of failed attempts to escape League One did not help to increase confidence in the Prince. After several disappointing campaigns in the third tier, it became clearer that Prince Abdullah’s involvement at the club could have ended prematurely without a hasty promotion. Like many expected, United’s long-awaited return to the Championship has coincided with the Prince increasing

his interest in the club. The 52-year-old Saudi Arabian Prince is just one promotion away from achieving his ambition to own a Premier League club. Whether this change will lead to an increase in transfer expenditure will become clear in January and next summer. With a manager such as Chris Wilder, who has an excellent eye for a transfer bargain, the Prince may not have to deploy a transfer war chest in order to achieve the promotion to beat all promotions.

ONE FOR THE FANS, SAYS CHRIS

Chris Wilder was understandably full of praise for his players following Saturday’s impressive success at Sunderland, which marked a personal landmark for the Blades boss as he recorded his first away win as a manager in the Championship. However as usual he was quick to dedicate this deserved result to the fans, pointing out that the travelling faithful of over 3000 had waited six years for this result. Two goals on his debut from Clayton Donaldson were

enough for United to leave the Stadium of Light with all three points, despite Jack Rodwell’s last-gasp consolation. And the Blades boss was brimming with pride in the aftermath of the clash, remarking: “It’s a fantastic day for everyone connected to the football club. To come to an iconic place like this is the reason we want to be in this division. We want to play at stadiums with these facilities against teams with the quality they have. I know they aren’t firing on all cylinders at the moment, but they will

in time.” Wilder added: “People were talking about us not having won away, but we were due a win and to have beaten Derby at home and Sunderland away is two massive results for us. We were a dangerous team on the day and out of respect to us they changed their formation to something they haven’t played all season. Yet again we’ve left everything out there It’s a great time to be involved in this club and we’re getting our rewards.”

CHANGES AT THE TOP - NEW BOARD

Scott and Simon McCabe will be stepping down as Directors of Sheffield United FC (SUFC) and its immediate holding company Blades Leisure Limited (BLL). Stephen Bettis & Martin Green join Jeremy Tutton in representing the McCabe Family on both Boards. The McCabe Family has been deeply involved with the Blades since the 1990s, during which time it has invested more than £100m directly into the Football Club. In addition, the Scarborough Foundation has provided funds to SUFC’s Community Foundation, which it initiated and helped establish some years ago. Scott and Simon’s father, Kevin, has been at the helm of SUFC for a long period,. This was prior to the investment in SUFC by His Royal Highness Prince Abdullah bin Mosaad bin Abdulaziz Al Saud in 2013, which saw the Blades owned on an equal basis between the two parties.

Honorary Chairman, Kevin McCabe said: Sheffield United’s return to the Championship this season coincided with Prince Abdullah being able to commit more time and energy to the Club. Since promotion the Prince, along with fellow Director Tareq Hawasli, new Board representative Yusuf Giansiracusa and other colleagues from Saudi Arabia and Europe, have demonstrated their desire to increase their involvement in directing and overseeing SUFC’s management,” said Mr McCabe. “We see this as a positive move that should further benefit our fine and proud Club. “It is to be remembered that a key reason in Prince Abdullah joining us four years ago was not only his clear belief in the Blades potential to succeed and grow as a business, but also as a result of the McCabe Family providing a 50% interest in BLL, concurrent to him committing new capital required to aid our

joint aim of getting the Blades back into the top echelons of English football. These Board changes are taking place at an appropriate time just after the closure of the August transfer window and coinciding with the Blades impressive start to the Championship season, for which Chris Wilder, his support management and the first team squad deserve much credit. In addition, our COO Andy Birks, has demonstrated his leadership qualities and settled in well to supervising and running the day-to-day business activities of the Blades. The dedicated efforts of Scott and Simon for the betterment of the Blades within the last 10 years and more should not be forgotten and are much appreciated by me. The new boards feature: Prince Abdullah bin Mosaad bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Tareq Hawasli, Yusuf Giansiracusa, Stephen Bettis, Martin Green and Jeremy Tutton.

THREE HOME POINTS FOR OWLS Wednesday posted their first Championship home win of the season and in some style too, beating Nottingham Forest 3-1. After Gary Hooper’s opener was cancelled out by Ben Osborn, the Owls took control and made the points safe with goals from Steven Fletcher and the returning Kieran Lee. It was no more than the home side deserved as Carlos Carvalhal’s side controlled the tempo of the contest and this time got their reward. Both teams made

their intentions clear from the off, with Wednesday first to show as Hooper went close from Jack Hunt’s low cross. Forest responded with Ben Brereton trying his luck on the counter but Keiren Westwood smothered comfortably. Back play went to the other end and the Owls created no less than four chances in five minutes. First Fletcher forced a fine save from Jordan Smith before debutant Joost van Aken almost made a dream start but was thwarted by the alert Forest keeper

from 12 yards. Then Adam Reach glanced another Hunt cross wide and Hooper fired just over after wriggling past his marker. On 17 minutes, though, the visitors launched another counter and came close to taking the lead. Brereton found space down the right and centred for the onrushing Jason Cummings, who could only slot wide from close range. Conceding then would have been harsh on the enterprising Owls and indeed it was the hosts that hit the

front on 23 minutes. Smith miscued a clearance right into the path of Barry Bannan who prodded through to Hooper and the former Celtic man made no mistake in drilling past Smith. But the advantage lasted barely five minutes as the Midlanders hit straight back and equalised. Osborn escaped the attention of Tom Lees, advanced down the left angle and shot low and hard to beat the advancing Westwood. Wednesday regrouped and Wallace tested

Smith with a curling effort before the final chance of an enthralling first half fell to Brereton, who hit across Westwood and past the post. The second period started as the first ended with chances at either end. Hooper pulled the trigger from ten yards but Liam Bridcutt bravely blocked. In keeping with the game, Forest hit back, and Brereton was denied a goal by Lees, who got back on the line to clear after the youngster beat Westwood. And that moment proved key as Wednesday

promptly restored their lead on 63 minutes. Lee, making his first start of the season, swung in an accurate corner and Fletcher climbed high to head home. Seven minutes later, the points were secure as the Owls notched from their next attack. Hunt crossed from the right and the unfortunate Tendayl Darikwa could only clear into the path of team mate Joe Worrall, the ball fell into the path of the loitering Lee and the game was all but over.

CARLOS REVIEWS FOREST SUCCESS

Having taken something of a converse vantage point for the 3-1 win over Nottingham Forest, Carlos Carvalhal saw both positives and negatives. The Owls’ head coach

served the first of a two-match touchline ban on Saturday, the second coming against Brentford at Hillsborough on Tuesday. Carvalhal said: “It was strange, I must tell you,

because that is not the normal view I have for a game. “So I saw both positives and negatives. The positives, I could see everything – the shape, the quality, the mistakes and how to correct them. “The negatives – as a coach you want to be down there with your team, right by your players. “My assistants are there, of course, but it is different for the manager. I must do my punishment but this is something is I would not like to do all the time.” On the game, Carlos took pride from the Owls’ performance and said his side might have been out of sight as early as 15 minutes in. He explained: “We had four or five chances early on, very good chances, and if we score those, the game is ours. “We could not keep playing with that kind of intensity, no team can, but the start set the tempo for the game and we were in control. “They scored from I think was only one or two chances but I was confident we would go on and win the game. “I said in the press conference before this game that I had a good vibe so I was not surprised to see how we won today.”

LEE RELEASES FITNESS FRUSTRATIONS

“But I felt good today and it was great to be back out there on the pitch. “To get on the scoresheet was a bonus because the main thing was the win for the team and for me personally to come through okay.” He added: “Not having played for a while, the legs can get a bit heavy and I’m sure I will feel it in the morning! “But no, it’s great for me because there’s nothing worse than not being able to contribute, even though there’s nothing you can do about it. “I’ve trained as much as I can and I am feeling fit, it’s that sharpness that you miss a little straight away. “But that will come and hopefully I will be back firing on all cylinders sooner rather than later. “It’s a little too early to say if I can play again on Tuesday so we will see what the next couple of days bring.”

Kieran Lee says his frustrations were relieved in part on Saturday as his comeback game finished in a 3-1 win for Wednesday. The popular midfield man posted his first start of the season against Nottingham Forest following an hip problem and marked his return with an assist and a goal. He told swfc.co.uk: “It’s been a frustrating start to the season personally because I have had to sit the first few games out. “Any player will tell you that hurts more than an injury because you want to be out there playing and helping the team. “Obviously I’m not 100% yet and the medical department are managing the situation day by day and week by week.

surprise at the social media post which told of fish over 2lb, maybe bigger! I arrived early, and rather than wander with Clint Walker looking for signs of fish, opted to start at I’ve enjoyed a session with the lure kit the gateway, and work my way around this week, on a water I never expected the whole lake having a few casts every to fish with artificial baits, in search of couple yards. A couple of minutes later, and a decided to check it out! I love my light feisty sergeant of just over a pound lay lure fishing, and took only my Sonik safely netted; a good start indeed! I had a couple of end, I have to admit that I’ve yet to find a hours to play with, and quickly found better or sharper jig head than the Ecogear that small, shoal perch were laying right Shirasu, which I load with my current up in the water, and that the lure was favourite lure, either the Rapture Slurp often taken on the drop almost instantly, (in pink if you must know) or a small Fox but if it got through the waiting hordes, Rage micro-fry which gives a trembling bigger fish often lurked beneath. I lost a couple of fish too, snatching at reason I’d chosen a light jig head which wouldn’t sink in to the debris. It’s fringed small plucks of the lure, but as I worked my way around, I found that the bank with reeds, offering dark ambush points exposed to the morning sun was almost for predators, (and plenty of snags!) but aside from that, there isn’t much to make completely fishless, and that almost every bite had come in patches of water steeped an angler consider perch… hence my in shadows; something to note for others. Most of the fish were interested in the paddle tail lure, but constantly swapping between that and the Rapture Slurp, I managed to keep bites coming with some regularity, the bigger fish often taking WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/THEMERCURYNEWSPAPER the pink favourite, the shoal fish hitting the fire tiger paddler, but most of all, I was having fun! I love short sessions like these, exploring new tactics on new venues is all part of building up the bigger picture, and just adds to the enjoyment. I was stopped a couple of times too, once by a lady walking with her elderly father, who told me about her carp fishing exploits, and by a young mum with a pushchair and toddler who wanted to look You will be after a vist to at the fish I’d just unhooked, then by a our friendly peaceful chap who had just joined the club, and self-contained luxury wanted to know more about the lakes, so flats on Tansley Moor we chatted for almost thirty minutes… most enjoyable! Eventually, I arrived at the restricted part of the lake, set aside for the model boat club, in which fishing is not allowed when the group are in attendance. It was clear of boaters, and I found a huge shoal of perch, catching a fish almost every cast for the next five minutes, when out of the corner of my eye, I spotted a gentleman approaching me; I’d forgotten it was Wednesday… model boat club meeting day! I wound in, keen to keep good relations with other lake users, and we started to chat about his boat, a fine tugboat, only marginally smaller than the last warship I served on! They really are a piece of engineering, and I was most impressed with the dedication and knowledge of this particular chap as he expounded about radio frequencies, battery lifespans, fibreglass mouldings and much more, and I have to admit, I quite enjoyed watching the boats moving across the water, especially the airboat, which had a remarkable turn of speed! In return, he and his friends asked about my lure fishing, the inhabitants of the lake, and the tactics to employed to tempt them, and I’d like to think that after our discussions, both sets of lake customers have a better appreciation of the other, which can only be good going forward! After a successful couple of hours, catching around fifty fish, some of them worthy of a picture, I turned for home to plan for my next session, but made a mental note to return soon… there has to be a monster or two in there somewhere, but who really cares if there isn’t, I really enjoyed the visit, and that is what it’s all about!
