2017 ST LEGER FESTIVAL DECLARED A HUGE SUCCESS Another hugely successful St Leger Festival has been declared by Doncaster Racecourse after the 2017 event drew to a close on Saturday. Record numbers of racegoers attended with last year’s figures being broken as people flocked to the town to soak up the atmosphere and witness some of the biggest names in the racing industry do what they do best. “We, along with
J
over 60,300 race goers, enjoyed another fantastic four day festival packed with superb quality racing and lots of other activities too including live music, a darts competition and our Best Dressed competitions,” said Abby Chandler head of marketing Doncaster Racecourse. “Our warmest congratulations go to CAPRI and his connections for claiming the legendary St Leger
&B
Stakes on Saturday, Joshua Meade our Best Dressed Gent on Friday and Lisa Smickersgill our Best Dressed Lady who will go on to represent Doncaster at the Best Dressed Lady in Yorkshire final.” The iconic race meeting saw thousands of people visit Doncaster for the event with hotels, bars, restaurants and other businesses reaping the benefits of the entire festival and race week. One small business
owner, Clare Barker of Love the Hattitude commented; “The St Leger Festival is always my busiest time of year and I had over 65% of my stock of hats and fascinators hired out and made many more bespoke items for my clients. It’s an amazing event that everyone in the town can enjoy and it clearly generates a lot of revenue for businesses in the town.” Next year’s St Leger Festival
will take place between 12th and 15th September and tickets will be on sale early in 2018.
In the meantime, there is just two flat race meetings left in the Doncaster calendar before
the ‘Return of the Jumps’ begins in December. To book tickets for any meeting

Antiques & Collectables
CLOSING DOWN We are very sorry to announce that we will be closing down J&B Antiques in November 2017 due to an increase in our rent and business rates; we find it no longer possible to run our business from the premises.
We will still be trading under J&B Antiques & Collectables and continuing with our house clearance service mainly online (through our website and social media).
We will still be looking to buy: Antiques, collectables and furniture. Cash for Gold (by appointment only). Instead of running from a shop, we will be trading from a local storage unit (tbc). Our office will be located above Clark’s Chemist in Penistone.
We would like to thanks all of our customers for your support over the 5 years of trading

TRIBUTES POUR IN AFTER SAD PASSING OF LOCAL ENTERTAINMENT LEGEND BOBBY KNUTT The people of South Yorkshire were saddened yesterday by the loss of one of our local legends as news came through of the passing of the great Bobby Knutt, whilst on holiday in France. Tributes have poured in from showbiz greats throughout the country, as many of our local readers shared their own memories of one of Sheffield’s favourite sons. Starting his working life as a miner, Bobby learned his trade in the clubs, firstly as a member of top band the Whirlwinds, before breaking into comedy as one half of
“Pee & Knutt” – the act that gave him his stage name – which he kept when he decided to go solo in 1965 and take the risk of trying to forge a full-time career in show business. The 1970’s saw Bobby add a new dimension to his career when he took the lead role in BBC Drama “The Price of Coal” and we saw him regularly on TV, probably most famously as Albert Dingle in Emmerdale, though he also played parts in Hearbeat, Coronation Street, Last of the Summer Wine and most recently as Eddie Dawson in Benidorm.
In later years Bobby has battled on, suffering the tragic sudden loss of his wife – former Olympic athlete Donna Hartley in 2013 – and enduring ongoing pain through an injury to his shoulder, which prevented him from enjoying his great love of playing guitar. He had only recently finished recording the latest series of Benidorm, and many tributes have been received from his friends in the cast and crew. A regular at the Lyceum, the Sheffield pantomime scene will not be the same this year without Bobby. RIP Bobby, Clubland will miss you.

WIN TICKETS TO SEE TOP TV COMEDIAN ED BYRNE LIVE IN BARNSLEY
Ed returns to the road this year after a total sell-out Edinburgh Fringe run with his biggest ever tour to date and his brand new show called Spoiler Alert, appearing at Barnsley Civic on Wednesday 11th October. He says; “I originally intended to call the show “I’ll Millennial You in a Minute”, but my promoter considered the title “off-puttingly baffling”. That’s my own chainsaw in the photo, by the way”. In the show, Ed explores the thin line between righteous complaining and brat-like whining and asks, ‘are we right to be fed up, or are we spoiled?’ Come and watch as Byrne takes this question, turns it upside down and shakes it until the funny falls out. Go on, spoil yourself. Recognized as one of the finest observational
comics in the industry, Ed’s television credits are countless (provided you’re really bad at counting); Mock The Week, Have I Got News For You, The Graham Norton Show, Live At The Apollo, The One Show, Comic Relief Bake Off 2015, The World’s Most Dangerous Roads and, most recently, he and Dara O Briain filmed the follow up to their Big Adventure show for BBC 2 entitled Dara and Ed’s Road to Mandalay. CAN’T GET TO THE CONTINENT?
Head to Magna instead, as Oktoberfest returns to Rotherham! For the last three years, Magna has recreated Europe’s most famous beer festival – and next month they are doing it again. Oktoberfest will return for one night only on Saturday 7th October, promising a party like no other in the heart of South Yorkshire. Serving up German beer, bratwurst, and a generous dose of Bavarian banter, revellers can boogie to traditional Oompa bands, feast on frankfurters and sip from traditional steins. Costume is encouraged, and a DJ and disco will keep the dancing going into the night. Becky Gill, sales manager at Magna, said: “No-one throws a party like Magna and this event is always a real highlight on our calendar. We can’t wait to bring Bavaria back to Rotherham. With the summer over and Christmas still months away, it’s the perfect excuse to get dressed up and enjoy a celebration of all things Oktoberfest. “Our huge open spaces make Magna the perfect party venue so dust off your dancing shoes, find yourself some lederhosen and we’ll see you at the bar!” Over the last three years, more than 4,000 people have attended Oktoberfest at Magna, which is thought to be the biggest event of its kind in the region.
Numbers are expected to be high again in 2017 and with beer prices reportedly reaching £9.70 a glass at the Munich event, Magna’s Oktoberfest promises to be far kinder on the pockets. The event starts at 5pm and runs until midnight. For those who choose to enjoy the atmosphere without the alcohol, plenty of car parking is available. Prost! Entry-only tickets for Oktoberfest are £5, with beer and food tokens available on the night. Bierkeller packages – must be purchased in advance online at www.visitmagna.co.uk Bierkeller package one: Standard individual entry PLUS one drink token, one main meal, one-pint stein, one hat. Just £15! Bierkeller package two: Standard individual entry PLUS 8 drink tokens, one main meal, one-pint stein, one hat. Just £25! A local Partner (employee) from John Lewis Sheffield has been given the opportunity to spend six months working for a charity, as part of a scheme established by the retailer. Set up as a charity in April 2000 as part of the John Lewis Partnership’s Golden Jubilee celebrations, The Golden Jubilee Trust (GJT) gives any John Lewis or Waitrose Partner the chance to work with a UK registered charity for up to six months full time on full pay regardless of age, role or length of service. Sarah Harrison from John Lewis Sheffield has chosen to support PACT (parents association of children with tumours & leukaemia) and during her six month role with the charity will be aiming to raise the charity’s profile to make more people aware of the great work that the charity does. In particular, Sarah will be arranging a very special event to celebrate the charity's 40th Birthday in December. PACT has also been shortlisted
for the Yorkshire Children of Courage Awards and Sarah will be working with the charity to help promote it’s nomination. Sarah Harrison says: “I just can't thank John Lewis enough for giving me such a great opportunity to spend time working with a charity really close to my heart. It’s wonderful to see first-hand the amazing work that PACT carries out, and it’s so heart-warming to see that their hard work has been recognised through the Yorkshire Children of Courage nomination.” PACT has been supporting children and their families since 1977. It provides a house near to the Sheffield Children’s Hospital where families can stay to be close to their children receiving treatment. The house also gives families the chance to spend quality time together in the knowledge that they are only a few minutes away from hospital if it’s needed. PACT also offers caravan breaks, trips and Christmas parties to support families and to help create those special memories. To vote in the Yorkshire Children of Courage Awards, please visit: /www.yorkshirechildren.co.uk/nominations/group-vote

PLAN YOUR JOURNEY CAREFULLY FOR IKEA’S OPENING WEEKEND Motorists are being advised to allow plenty of time for their journey and consider alternative methods of transport as the city gears up for IKEA’s opening weekend. Sheffield City Council is expecting similar numbers on the roads to those normally experienced during the Christmas holiday period with IKEA opening its doors for the first time from Thursday. Councillor Jack Scott, cabinet member for transport and infrastructure, said: “I’m delighted that IKEA is here and know that its store will be a big success. The store has excellent tram links with a Supertram station just yards away. “The store had encouraged people to use public transport wherever possible. “IKEA Sheffield backs on to the Sheffield to Tinsley Canal and can be accessed by cycle or on foot. I want people to look at these options but, if they have to drive, to allow plenty of time to do so and to follow updates from Highways England or radio traffic announcements. “I know that we need to do more to improve the infrastructure close to the store and this has been acknowledged by IKEA and Meadowhall too. “We have announced a feasibility study looking at capacity issues close to the Meadowhall junction of the M1 and will continue to assess how we can adapt to this rapidly changing area of the city.” Sheffield City Council will be watching the road

We will also use our digital signs throughout the Don Valley to inform motorists of any delays they face. The council is working with Meadowhall and others to unlock additional parking spaces usually used at busy times of the year. Ikea will also provide extra staff to operate overflow car parks and ensure people can get to the store easily. Ikea is the only store in the country to have a tram stop, Carbrook, on its doorstep. Shoppers can use it as an alternative to beat the traffic queues. The capacity of the IKEA Sheffield car park is 983 spaces and car parking spaces will turn round quickly. The expectation is there will be an additional 900 vehicles per hour in the Lower Don Valley during peak time over the Thursday 28 September to Sunday 1 October opening period. The initial four-day opening period is likely to be on a par with peak Christmas days in terms of traffic levels on the network. Garry Deakin, store manager for IKEA Sheffield, added: “I am incredibly excited to open the doors to IKEA Sheffield on Thursday and thrilled that so many people are planning to join us as we celebrate our arrival in the city. “We have been working closely with Sheffield City Council to manage traffic to the store and would encourage everyone to use public transport where possible. IKEA Sheffield is extremely well-served by the Supertram and local bus routes so people can travel easily between the store and the city centre.”

TRY OUR AGE FRIENDLY APPS
As we get older, picking up new gadgets and learning to use mobile phone apps might seem like a challenge, but as we become more comfortable with how they work, we can see that these useful programmes benefit our daily lives. After all, technology such as modern curved stairlifts has helped us be more mobile around the home and similarly, apps and websites can help us lead independent and fulfilling lifestyles well into our later years. From apps that help older people stay in touch with loved ones to websites that help people find the perfect retirement home. If you want to learn about how technology can improve small tasks from day to day, take a look at our handpicked list of useful apps and websites for older people. Kindeo Kindeo is an app that helps older people tell their life story on video, capturing important memories and wisdom built up during their lifetime to share with current and future generations of their family. The founders of Kindeo came up with the idea after losing relatives and wishing they had asked more about their history whilst they were still alive. The app has been specially designed to ensure it is as easy to use for older people as possible and it employs a simple question based design to help tease out stories about someone’s life. The answer to each question is recorded as part of a short video and in the coming weeks new features mean users can add photos and text to their stories. The free-to-use app is available in the iPad app store and will soon be available on Android devices as well. Lumosity Lumosity is a leading brain training program, available on the web and on mobile devices. Lumosity’s scientists take neuropsychological

and cognitive research tasks, or design new ones, and work with game designers to transform them into 50+ cognitive games. Designed to be both fun and adaptively challenging, Lumosity’s training program is accessible to people of all ages — helping them stay challenged to the full extent of their abilities. Playlist for Life Everyone has a soundtrack that takes them back to a certain place, reminds them of a friend or family member or a significant moment whenever they hear it. Playlist for Life is founded by writer and broadcaster Sally Magnusson in memory of her mum, Mamie. After her mother developed dementia, Sally noticed personally meaningful music helped her mum. The website has been in existence for some time, but now an app is being released and this will allow users to create a personal playlist. The app works in association with the Spotify online music service to allow the user to listen to the music immediately. Replay Sporting Memories The Sporting Memories Foundation released a ground breaking app called Replay Sporting Memories, which allows users to access thousands of sporting memories from years gone by and to share their own to help older people, especially those living with dementia, depression and loneliness. The app makes these memories instantly accessible, and it is easy for a user to add and save a collection of memories to replay later, reminisce with others, or create their very own vintage newspaper, Sporting Pink. The foundation is also developing a therapeutic section to help carers and volunteers to trigger the memories of people living with dementia and the app will allow people to access the #OneMillionMemories and other images and stories that have been shared and gathered to provide meaningful visual stimuli and familiar associations to help keep people connected and engaged with family and their communities So if someone wants to relive the 1966 world cup final or another iconic sporting moment, then they can by downloading the app for free from Google Play and the App Store. Pocket Physio Care UK, which provides social and health care in the UK, have put their years of experience helping older people into a fitness app that can make it easier to get a sufficient work out at your own pace. While the great prices of a stairlift have made getting up and down stairs more comfortable, particularly after surgery, simple exercises that help to build your strength and maintain movement are worth considering. The Pocket Physio app is an easy-to-use guide for older

exercisers and offers physiotherapy movements designed to help those recovering from orthopaedic surgery or older people wanting to build up strength. The app features several exercise demonstration videos that are easy to follow along with written text explaining how to carry out the movement correctly for it to be effective. The exercises in Pocket Physio cover hip and knee replacements, Dupuytren’s Contracture, forefoot surgeries and foot surgery such as subtalar. The Pocket Physio includes a calendar to help people remember any follow-up appointments they need to attend post-surgery, as well as when they can complete their strengthening exercises. The app will also suggest tips for managing postoperative pain, how to make walking with a frame or crutches more comfortable and advice on daily tasks such as bathing and dressing after an operation. Skype This communication app has been around for a while but with its ability to connect people all over the world at no cost, Skype is likely to become even more popular with older users. Free to download, Skype lets you call friends and relatives and connect to other Skype account holders for free via tablet, smartphone or computer. Its video calling function also means older people can visually connect with their children, grandchildren and friends in far flung places.

THOR’S tipi bar returns to Sheffield This November the everpopular and highly-acclaimed THOR’S tipi bar will make a welcome return to Sheffield city centre, running from 21 November right through until 31 December 2017. Last year saw the arrival of THOR’S to Sheffield for the very first time and in just six weeks over 50,000 people visited this uniquely themed attraction that plays on Yorkshire’s Viking heritage. Commencing Tuesday 21 November in the Peace Gardens, THOR’S will once again open its doors and provide a cosy winter retreat for Christmas shoppers, visitors and families alike. Two linked canvas tipis will form the bar, festooned with lighting and decked out with wooden tables and benches, cosy furs and an open fire pit. An outdoor heated area will allow customers to soak up the festival atmosphere whilst watching the hustle and bustle around them. Local beer maker Abbeydale Brewery will be serving lagers and draft ales and THOR’S guest beer will be making its introduction to Sheffield customers. Mulled wine, hot cider and a fully licensed bar will ensure there is something to warm everyone’s cockles. A hot chocolate station allows kids, big and small, to choose

a topping for their homemade chocolate treat. One of Sheffield’s favourite street food vendors, The Gravy Train, will be making its debut, bringing its classic poutine-inspired menu to the event. Maria Farrugia, co-founder of THOR’s, said: “We are really excited to be returning to Sheffield and are confident that this year will be even more spectacular. So start your festive season in style and join us to enjoy a unique atmosphere under candlelit canvas, with a roaring log fire and the perfect festive atmosphere.” Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “Last year’s event brought a real festive buzz to Sheffield, adding to the incredible atmosphere of the city around Christmas time. It’s fantastic to see the popular event return to the Peace Gardens and offer a place where people can
come together in celebrating this festive period. “It’s an attraction which really adds to the vibrant festive programme Sheffield has on offer and we really look forward to welcoming visitors once again.” In addition to Sheffield, THOR’S tipi bars will be popping up in York, Leeds, Lincoln, Milton Keynes and London over the Christmas season. For Christmas meals and office gatherings with a difference, THOR’S tipi bar can either be hired exclusively for up to 180 people or a special chill-out area can be set aside for smaller groups (minimum 10 people). Bookings are now open on 01653 610029. THOR’S tipi bar will be open from 10:30am to 11pm daily from 21 November through to 31 December 2017 (closed Christmas Day). ANGLER’S CORNER
be a little more reticent to feed, and with forecast high pressure, then pouring rain, I wasn’t that confident, but needs must, and with Clint Walker I climbed into the van to drive through the Carp were my target this week, because thick morning fog to the venue. I wanted to put a few more fish through I wasn’t surprised to be the only angler my brand new Sonik Sports Vader X on the bank, therefore with my pick of the rod and reel, so picked a nearby club pegs, but I knew that a couple of favoured water which holds plenty of fish between spots would probably be taken up at some 10-20lb which only allows the use of a point during the day, so quickly wheeled single rod; hopefully, it would get a real the barrow along the path, and set up in test! the lee of a large bramble, on my favourite The weather is certainly on the turn now, mark, hoping to keep out of the worst the leaves are dripping from the trees in of the wind which was biting across the varying shades of red, golds, and browns, lake; it was freezing! Before I unsheathed and when I went out to the van in the the rod, I mixed up some sweetcorn and early morning mist, it was cold enough pellet, added a good glug of Spotted Fin to see my breath as I wiped condensation Classic Corn Particle Syrup, snapped the from the windows. An unusually cold lid back on the bucket, and gave it a good night previously meant that the fish would shake to ensure an even coating. A small amount of dry groundbait went in on top, just to add a bit more loveliness, then it was left to sit for a few minutes whilst I got set up. The new Vader X range offers anglers an excellent set up, at a great price, without skimping on quality. Carbon rods have come on a long way over the last few NORTON COMMON ROAD, NORTON, years, and Sonik have sourced a brilliantly DONCASTER DN6 9HP progressive blank, with plenty of grunt low down, and excellent tip recovery, MATCH & DAY TICKET VENUE which is priced at just £74.99! The Vader X looks aesthetically good too, with a slim Japanese shrink wrapped butt, and a custom Sonik reel seat which will hold the OPEN MATCHES - RING FOR DETAILS biggest of big pit reels; no flashy graphics just a muted appeal at good money Cafe, Tackle Shop and Full Facilities OnSite! either, in test curves from 2.75lb to 3.5lb. The Vader X reel is equally understated, yet Designed & Stocked just as impressive. Again, it’s appeal Especially for Match Fishing comes not just in the price, (which at £5.00 Per Person just £49.99 offers excellent value) but • Carps (FI’s, Mirror, Common & Ghost) to 9lb in the aesthetics, and workmanship of • Crucian • Barrel the product; supplied with a pair of deep • Bream to 5lb spools, you get a lot for your money, and • Chub • Tench to 5lb • Rudd/Roach you can even add the Vader X landing net too! All in, a set of three rods, three reels, 40 PEGS AVAILABLE and a landing net won’t break the bank FOR FURTHER INFORMATION at a lot less than £400, thanks to Sonik’s CONTACT KEVIN ON 07891 593870 superb three for two offer; a viable option a market often obscured with style, but WWW.ROANFISHERY.CO.UK in not much substance! Check them out… (online deals may be available) Normally, I’d use a 1.5lb test curve rod at this venue, having witnessed a lot of fish lost when using heavier rods, but You will be after a vist to the 2.75lb Vader X is a pretty forgiving our friendly peaceful wand, so I thought I’d give it a run out… self-contained luxury I tackled up with a method feeder, packed flats on Tansley Moor it with sticky Spotted Fin groundbait, and dropped it out onto the bed of particle/ MENTION THE MERCURY TO

pellet mix I’d spooned out a few minutes before. I huddled under the brolly as the wind picked up, a bitter, biting wind that proved difficult to avoid as it blustered directly at me, but I stuck it out, and within thirty minutes, had banked my first fish, a pristine double figure common, scaled with gorgeous autumn colours; perfect start! A quick top up of particle mix, repack the feeder, and it was swung back out to settle… Thirty minutes more, and another fish lay in the cradle, slightly bigger, and also beautifully scaled in the sunlight. The sun was getting higher, and as it did, the fish pushed out from the bank into a slightly deeper area; no matter, I’d already put some bait in there too, so switched to a longer line, hoping to keep fish coming. They did. Every thirty minutes, I had a screaming run as carp after carp felt the weight of the feeder, and raced off into the depths. I did unfortunately lose a trio of fish, disappointingly to pre-tied, top branded hook links, all from the same single packet, which all failed the instant any load was applied, but at 12lb breaking strain, with a size 10 hook, I was frustrated with the failures… so changed the hook links to negate the issue, and carried on catching! My next fish proved to be the best of the morning at just over 16lb, the one after, slightly smaller at 15lb, but they were still tripping up like clockwork every half an hour or so. By now, other anglers had arrived, and seemed to be finding things a little more difficult, but still, the carp in front of me continued to hoover up the baits, topped up after every fish, and
gratefully accepted! After the wind came the rain; an incredibly heavy downpour which saw most of us start to pack up, whilst trying our hardest to remain under the brolly and not step out into the deluge. Typically, a final run saw me get a proper soaking, but by the end of a 7 hour session, I’d landed a dozen double figure, hard scrapping carp, lost three, and banked a single barbel. Around me other anglers reported a total of five of six fish, so I thought I’d done well, and pleasingly, hadn’t lost any fish to hook pulls either; a testament to the forgiving quality of the Vader X rod. The quick drag clutch on the reel had also performed perfectly, allowing the carp to pull away (and leave my rod in situ!) but a quick half twist was sufficient to put considerable pressure on the fish without fear of loss. On the day, as expected, the Vader X range performed beautifully, and made my fishing fun as each lunge of the fish was absorbed by the forgiving blank, or dealt with by the smoothly slipping clutch. I’ve now put around twenty five carp through the Vader X set up, and I’m hooked. My usual Sonik 3lb SK3 XTR’S will now be used for heavier winter pike fishing, and the Vader X will become my mainstay carp tool; if you see me on the bank, please come for a look, I guarantee you’ll be impressed!

RYAN ENJOYING CONSISTENT RUN An assist and a victory was enough to satisfy Rotherham United’s Ryan Williams, despite passing up the chance to make the score-sheet himself. The Millers notched another five goals to resign basement club Oldham Athletic to defeat at the AESSEAL New York Stadium at the weekend, with the midfielder enjoying another stellar afternoon. The Aussie put the Millers’ red hot home form down to their high fitness levels, whilst he is also enjoying a consistent run in the side himself after consigning his own injury troubles to the past. “It’s down to fitness,” he said. “Other players make one or two runs and tire out but with us, because we had such a good preseason, we’re able to keep doing it for 90 minutes from the start to the finish. “My injury troubles are behind me and I’ve been fit for a year and a half now. Each game I’m slowly getting fitter, stronger and adapting to playing each week. It’s just proving to people now that I can play. Hopefully people can see it was one misdiagnosed injury and treated like something that it wasn’t. “I’ve not had a pre-season for a few years because of my injury but I always knew if I had a preseason that I’d be fine. I’m doing all the work I can do to stay fit and healthy which I will do to the end of my career.” The Millers’ performance didn’t come as a

And the “togetherness” of this Rotherham United outfit stressed by Williams allowed him to overlook his opportunity to bag one of his own, and bring Kieffer Moore’s tally for the season up to eight. “I should’ve scored that one but Kieffer was there to poke it home so I’m happy with that! He’s on fire. He’s always in the right spot at the right time, he’s dangerous with his feet and in the air he’s even more dangerous so he’s a great player to
have in your team. “I’m pretty self-motivated whether there’s someone behind me or not, but you see the boys come on and one gets an assist and another gets an assist and a goal. There’s a real togetherness about the group, though, so nobody minds who scores and gets the assists, we’re all just happy for each other.”
started the season with four heavy defeats, but they took all three points this time out with a 2-1 victory. The win is enough to lift them off the foot-of-thetable. Goals from Simon Chadburn and Ryan Hallsworth were enough to give Wombwell Main a 2-0 away win over Jubilee Sports. Elsewhere, a Callum Mackie hat-trick inspired North Gawber Colliery to a 4-3 win over Oughtibridge WMFC. Luke Marsden was also on target for North Gawber.
Centre. Robert Gorman was also on the score-sheet for Kiveton. Silkstone United claimed their first win of the season at the fourth attempt, with a 3-1 home win over Caribbean Sports.
surprise to the summer signing either, coming equipped with a plan of action to break down the Latics straight from the training ground. “I don’t really look at the league, I just focus on what we’re doing,” Ryan added. “We take it game-by-game and compete as well as we can each game. We focus on what we have to do to beat the team in front of us and we did it exactly how we did on the training ground and won 5-1. We don’t look to far ahead but enjoy ourselves and work hard at the same time. “I felt that we shouldn’t have conceded the goal we did concede but we fought well and I knew that after the second one in that there would be two or three more. That’s how it is; when we’re 1-1, we find it hard to see that we will score but when we do score we just keep going.”

Week six once again threw up a busy week in the County Senior Leagues, with 17 games taking place on Saturday afternoon across the leagues’ three divisions. Premier Division South Kirkby Colliery are the surprise new leaders atop the Premier Division at this early stage. They were 4-1 winners against Millmoor Juniors at Grange Park on Saturday. The win is South Kirkby’s fourth in five games. Previous leaders AFC Penistone Church Reserves fell to second place, after they drew 1-1 with Frecheville at Davy Sports Ground. Two goals from Mark Clare were enough to give Swinton Athletic a 2-1 away win over Handsworth Parramore Reserves. Swinton are one of only two teams that have an 100% record in the Premier Division, and sit in third position. The first Denaby derby of the season between Denaby Main and Denaby United took place at Tickhill Square on Saturday afternoon. Denaby Main had
Division One Brinsworth Whitehill scored three goals for the third successive game. This time they were 3-1 winners at home against Sheffield Bankers. Brinsworth sit in second place in the table. High Green Villa were 3-0 winners over Stocksbridge Park Steels Development at St Georges Park. The win takes High Green into third place. AFC Dronfield are just two points further back after they defeated Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 2-1 at Gosforth Fields. Jack Mason scored three times to help Kiveton Park to their first win of the season. They were 4-1 winners over Sheffield Medics at the Goodwin Sports
Division Two League leaders Boynton Sports suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of Caribbean Sports Reserves. Caribbean Sports ran out 4-3 winners at Firvale Academy. James Tucker was the hat-trick hero for Sheffield Bankers Reserves in their 4-0 away win over Thurcroft Miners Institute. Jordan Gayle also scored for the Bankers who are up to second place. Rob Gibson and Christian Fisher both scored goals for New Bohemians as they beat Wombwell Main Development at Forge Valley School. South Kirkby Colliery Reserves picked up their first three points of the season with a 3-1 home win over AFC Dronfield Reserves. Swinton Athletic Reserves made it back-to-back wins, with a 3-0 away win over Nrth Gawber Colliery Reserves. It is the fourth time in five games that Swinton have scored three goals in a match.
FERGUSON PRAISES MAY LAWLOR PLEASED WITH DEFENCE
Darren Ferguson has been impressed by the improvement in striker Alfie May at the start of his first full season with the club. May is Rovers’ top-scorer in all competitions this season with five goals, and Ferguson believes a full pre-season has helped the 24year-old. “He’s improved technically, he keeps the ball very well and makes it hard for the defenders he comes up against,” he said. “Pre-season helped him massively as it was the first one he’s ever been involved in, he’s physically matured and has looked sharp from day one. “He knows he has got the respect of his teammates and the fans like him as well, he’s great to have around the place and a good player to
work with.” Rovers’ next opponents in Sky Bet League One are table-toppers Shrewsbury Town, and Ferguson is expecting a tough game as they look for a first home win of the season at the Keepmoat Stadium. “They will come here full of confidence on the back of a great start to the season, they probably should have won at the weekend as well so it will be difficult for us,” he added. “We know that if we’re at it then we’re a match for anyone in this league, hopefully that shows as I’ve got real belief in my players. “Ideally we would have wanted to win a game at home in the league by now but we’re not far off, we want to make this place a fortress again as that’s what brought us so much success last season.”
“We’ve deserved more points than we’ve got so far, things haven’t quite gone our way but hopefully the win against Plymouth will prove to be a turning point. “The clean sheet was a boost for the backline as a whole, the defence performed well and limited the chances they had and it was very pleasing overall.” Rovers are still looking for their first home victory of the season, but Lawlor reckons that their performances have merited more points at the Keepmoat Stadium. “We’re looking to turn the draws into wins at home, we’ve played well in all of the games here so far so we’ve been unfortunate not to pick up a win here yet,” he added. “Winning games breeds confidence, we want Ian Lawlor says that Rovers will go into the fans to get behind us and keep coming Tuesday’s game against Sky Bet League One through the gates as their support can be the leaders Shrewsbury Town full of confidence difference. after getting back to winning ways at the “We haven’t looked out of place in this league weekend. and have handled the step up well, we’ve played well and it’s just the fine lines that Lawlor kept a clean sheet in the 3-0 win over we’re looking to improve on.” Plymouth, and believes that victory will give them momentum as they prepare to take on Paul Hurst’s side. “The result at the weekend was massive, it was a deserved three points and it came at a good time for us,” he said.

BLADES STRIKE DOWN OWLS The first Steel City derby since 2012 saw United dominant and increase the gap over Wednesday in the Championship table. Leon Clarke scored twice, whilst John Fleck and Mark Duffy were also on target. There were a couple of surprises in the Blades team after a week of injury headaches for boss Chris Wilder. In total there were three changes with CarterVickers, Baldock and Clarke included. Freeman missed out with an injury sustained in the home fixture with Norwich, whilst Moore and Sharp were deemed fit enough for the bench. Brooks may not be wellknown in S6 but he took just two minutes to make a significant impact in front of the Hillsborough Kop. His mazy run took in three or four defenders before he was fouled on the edge of the box. Brooks then back-heeled the set-piece for FLECK to side-foot low into the net, with goalkeeper Westwood rooted to his spot. Wednesday soon had a chance to respond with a free-kick in a similarly dangerous area following a Wright foul but the shot from Jones flicked off the wall. Bannan then chipped over the United defence but Reach was overstretching as he
went for the ball. On 13 minutes Clarke beat the offside trap to attach himself to Fleck’s pass but his effort was weak - the former Owls striker was more forceful with the next opportunity, though. The referee’s watch ticked around to 15 minutes when Stevens’s ball over the top resulted in CLARKE again getting clear and this time he slipped the ball beyond Westwood and into the net. Apart from the top tier of the Leppings Lane end, Hillsborough went scarily quiet as they reacted to the scoreline. The action remained high tempo but the chances dried up for a spell. United won a number of corners and from one Brooks recycled possession but Basham, playing in midfield, volleyed over. As half-time approached, Wednesday applied a bit of pressure - a powerful Hunt shot looked on target but Wright deflected the ball with his head and after the Blades failed with a number of attempted to see out the half, Wallace flicked inside for HOOPER, who got to the ball before Wright to divert home at the near post. It was the last action of a pulsating first half. Wednesday made a
change at the break and their goal before the interval gave them impetus to apply more pressure. The chances, though, were coming at the both ends. Brooks was well off target after Fleck got the better of Bannan and Hooper was in the clear from Reach’s pass but his mis-control allowed Blackman to collect. Just after the hour, the game sparked back into the life. Brooks nutmegged Hunt and played in Clarke but the striker fired over and United made their first change - Duffy replacing Wright as the formation changed. Wednesday levelled on 65 minutes as CarterVickers failed to cut out Reach’s cross and JOAO emphatically hammered past Blackman from inside the box. The home fans were still celebrating when the Blades retook the lead less than two minutes later. The goal belonged the individual brilliance of DUFFY, who twisted and turned his marker before lashing past Westwood at the goalkeeper’s near post. Bannan fired a halfvolley wide, whilst Brooks went close again, he got the better of Bannan and Reach before forcing a fantastic save out of Westwood. A fourth Blades, goal,
BROOKES STARS AGAINST OWLS WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH David Brooks is no longer our secret. For the last few months the 20-year-old has impressed when given a chance in the first team. The skillful forward scored a couple of memorable goals during pre-season and has looked bright when given a chance in the league. All this time the youngster was operating under the radar of the mass media, until Sunday. The press are renowned and often criticised for creating an unnecessary buzz regarding young British players. After a sensational man of the match performance on Sunday the whirlwind will start to form around the United player. Brooks was a huge influence in the game, his pace
and balance too much for the Wednesday defence to handle. A foul on him led to John Fleck scoring the first and a chipped through ball to Leon Clarke led to the final nail in the Owls’ coffin. His most memorable moment was undoubtedly the nutmeg on the turn to put United in a great position to score. The subsequent cross to Clarke should have been put away by the former-Wednesday man. A clip of the skill has already been viewed over 2,000 times on the Blades’ YouTube account and has gone viral across Twitter. The buzz is a fantastic reward for the England Youth international, but the prospect of keeping Brooks long-term

declines with every glittering display. Inevitably, unless the club reaches the Premier League, interest in Brooks will increase. The question will turn to how much the ownership can crank up the fee. United appear to have been caught out by Calvert-Lewin’s progress at Everton. The striker was sold for around £1.5 million including add ons, a fee that seems a steal for the Merseyside club.
though, wasn’t far away. On 77 minutes Wednesday failed to clear, Coutts and Brooks were both involved before CLARKE outmuscled both of the home central defenders before lifting over
Westwood and into the goal. It was the signal for some home fans to leave. Hooper’s header from Hunt’s cross was comfortable for Blackman and the Wednesday scorer
also had another effort deflected wide by O’Connell. By contrast, the Blades fans were in full voice... right up to the final whistle and beyond. And why not.
WHAT A DAY, SAYS WILDER
Chris Wilder will be a proud man and understandably so on Sunday evening. Reflecting on winning a six-goal thriller in the Steel City derby at Hillsborough, a thoroughly deserved victory at that, Wilder felt United’s positivity and character were two decisive factors in beating Sheffield Wednesday in their own back yard. He remarked: “We went for the game like we said we would do and we deserved the victory without a shadow of doubt. “We went after the game, we wanted a quick start and it was perfection. But then we had to show a different side to us. “They got a goal before the break when we perhaps should be a bit more professional and see the half out. This place was bouncing then and they had the momentum and impetus. “They pushed us back, but we dug in and showed fantastic character. To do

what we did having been pegged was phenomenal really. “We were even a touch disappointed towards the end that we didn’t score more and make the win even more convincing. “But I’m not going to get greedy, coming here and winning 4-2 after six years out of the division is a fantastic result.” Preparations for Wolves will begin on Monday as Wilder and co savour this victory and the Blades boss was complimentary about how his counterpart handled himself in the heat of the moment at the final whistle. Wilder added:
“We’ll enjoy this and prepare for Wolves on Monday! “I must say Carlos (Carvalhal) was a class act after the game, he shook our hands and wished us all the best. “There is so much hype before the game, it is a highly passionate derby. It is more than just three points and league position, all that goes out of the window. “It is a great day for us and a hugely disappointing day for them, but I really appreciated the way Carlos and his staff conducted themselves, they were very gracious.”

LIAM WALDOCK SIGNS PROFESSIONAL CONTRACT Young Owls star Liam Waldock has penned his first professional contract with Sheffield Wednesday until summer 2020. The academy youngster, who joined the club at the age of eight, has successfully risen through the ranks to sign professional terms with Wednesday. Signing his contract on the day of his 17th birthday, Waldock told swfc.co.uk: “I’ve been here since the age of eight so to sign a professional contract today is a really proud day for me. It’s a dream come true. “I want to keep improving, I’m very ambitious and want to be successful here and play as high as I can. “My family are big Wednesdayites too and it’s a proud day for them. here. “I’ve not achieved anything yet, I need to get my head down and take everything to the next level.” He added: “Like all players, my aim is to make it here in the first team. “But there is a long way to go before then. Hopefully we can have another good season at Under-18 level but this time go one better and win the league. “I want to get in the 23s, get a regular spot in that team and keep playing. “It’s a lot faster in the 23s, if you get the ball, you have to be much quicker, if you don’t, you lose possession and those kind of experiences make you a better player. “With the 18s, it’s been a good start, we lost our first game of the season on Saturday but we have to keep going and I think with the group of players here, we have the potential to win the league.”
