START & FINISH LOCATIONS FOR 2018 TOUR DE YORKSHIRE ANNOUNCED The eight host locations for 2018 Tour de Yorkshire have been unveiled today. The stages for the newly expanded fourth edition will begin or end in: • Barnsley • Beverley • Doncaster • Halifax • Ilkley • Leeds • Richmond • Scarborough Organisers Welcome to Yorkshire and the Amaury Sport Organisation (A.S.O.) revealed the locations for the newly expanded four-day men’s race which will take place between 3-6 May. The Asda Women’s Tour de Yorkshire – which is doubling in size from
one to two days - will be held over 3-4 May. The third edition took place in April and saw the race go from strength to strength once again. A record 2.2 million spectators lined the route and generated £64 million for the Yorkshire economy. The action was also beamed live in 180 countries and attracted 9.7 million global TV viewers on Eurosport and ITV alone. Sir Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: “The Tour de Yorkshire is a true success story and in just three years it has grown to become one of the best attended and most dramatic races on the cycling calendar. “Of course, with the men’s race being extended to four days
and the women’s race now being held over two, it means we can visit more parts of the county and I know our eight start and finish locations will put on a real show.” Christian Prudhomme, Director of the Tour de France at the A.S.O, said: “The Tour de Yorkshire has gone from strength to strength over the last three years and we are delighted to be working in partnership with such a great team at Welcome to Yorkshire. “The way people get behind the race in Yorkshire is incredible and we are looking forward to another fantastic edition in 2018.” Julie Harrington, Chief Executive of British Cycling, said:
“Next year’s Tour de Yorkshire is shaping up to be the best yet with more stages for the men’s and women’s races and, at British Cycling, we’re looking forward to working with colleagues and partners across the county to use the inspiration of the world’s best riders to get even more people on bikes.” Mayor Ros Jones, said: “This is fantastic news for Doncaster – hosting the Tour de Yorkshire for the second time cements that we are able to host world class sporting events, and continues the cycling revolution that is sweeping through Doncaster. “The fantastic memories from when we hosted the event last year still feel so fresh, and make

it even more exciting to know that we get to do it all again in 2018. “We did Doncaster proud last year, with 50,000 people lining the streets to watch the world class riders and the decorations in the towns and villages on the route being some of the most colourful the Tour has ever seen. I’m sure this played a big part in Welcome to Yorkshire’s decision to bring the Tour back to Doncaster next year. “Let’s do it all again in 2018, and do it even better!” Next year’s Tour will once again see the return of the Maserati Tour de Yorkshire Ride sportive and give the chance for Tour Makers to volunteer
on the race route and help welcome the millions of spectators. Many of the host towns announced today are also home to Yorkshire Bank Bike Libraries, a direct legacy of the Tour
de France and Tour de Yorkshire, which aim to offer every child in Yorkshire access to a bike. So far 46 libraries have opened across the county and over 5,000 bikes have been donated.
The full 2018 race route will be unveiled on Tues 5 December 2017 – this announcement will include exact start & finish locations and the distance and profile of each stage.

OVER 60 CHARITIES WELCOMING VISITORS TO VOLUNTEERING FAIR! On Tuesday 10th October, the Town Hall is the place to be for potential volunteers in Sheffield. The Volunteering Fair will take place in the iconic building, where there will be over 60 charities to meet visitors interested in becoming volunteers. The Lord Mayor of Sheffield,
Councillor Anne Murphy, will also be in attendance and speaking on the importance of volunteering in Sheffield. One of the main reasons people give for volunteering is to help others and give back, and it is a great way to make a worthwhile difference within the community.
Volunteers can share their skills and also learn new skills, gain relevant experience for work or study, or pursue hobbies and interests. Charities at the Fair will include those working; with children and on youth projects, with refugees and asylum seekers, in victim support and recovery, housing and homelessness, health and recovery from illness, in the arts and heritage, environment, education, social care, disability, information services and more. There are many opportunities in different areas, which the charities will be able to talk directly with visitors about. The Volunteering Fair falls on World Mental Health

Day, and there are many ways that volunteering can help improve mental health and wellbeing. This could be through increasing mental and physical activity, reducing isolation and stress, providing a sense of achievement and pride, or just being a way to meet people and have fun. As this is Sheffield Volunteer Centre and Sheffield Hallam Students’ Union’s first joint Volunteering Fair, Volunteer Centre Advisors will be on-hand to talk to visitors about volunteering. The Students’ Union will also have stalls on studentled projects for Hallam University students to get involved in.

WIN TICKETS FOR A NIGHT OF HIGH-OCTANCE MOTOCROSS ACTION AT THE ARENA
The Arenacross Tour is set to explode into 2018 with a bigger and better format for its seven-round action-packed UK indoor Motocross race series and Freestyle extravaganza - and the penultimate leg of the Tour will take in the FlyDSA Arena on Saturday the 10th of February. AX is high-octane entertainment at its very best. It throws together an intoxicating mix of world-class indoor Motocross racing, high-flying Freestyle Motocross and a show to rival any music festival. In its five-year history, it has seen thousands of fans streaming through its doors every year. Enthusiastic fans packed out The FlyDSA Arena, when the 2017 Tour was in town earlier this year. They enjoyed a night of tense race action, high-air FMX antics, lights, lasers and music. Expectations were at an all-time high, as there were just 12 points separating the first and sixth placed Pro riders and there were two Brits in the mix. The evening didn’t disappoint, and the ultra-close racing kept the crowd on the edge of their seats. A couple of South Yorkshire’s own stars of the future – Harvey Shaw and Kian Knowles - were in the racing mix and, as well as making their family and friends proud of their on-track prowess, they worked hard to help promote
the AX series with a spot of television and radio work. Away from the racing line, the Freestyle MX boys never fail to impress with their electrifying, high-air whips and flips which keep the audience hollering for more. In its five-year stint, the UK Arenacross series has been revered for showcasing FMX at its very best and that’s why the big-hitters of the sport, the FMX royalty, have made the series a must-do affair and worked it into their busy schedules. When it comes to AX; X-Games gold medallists and Nitro Circus superstars abound with Spaniard Edgar Torronteras and the UK’s very own Jamie Squibb and the Bolddog Team at the fore, together with arguably the most spectacular double-flipper in the world, 6’ 4” Czech uber-cool superman, Petr Pilat. Commenting on the growth and popularity of Arenacross, ArenaSports Live (the company behind AX) boss Matt Bates said; “I believe we have a massive future! As well as ramping up the AX experience for our UK based fans, we’re extending into Europe next year and I’m set on making sure we develop both the riders’ rewards, team support and take the entertainment of AX to a whole new level.” Be a part of the action and get your tickets NOW! Tickets priced from £30.24 Adults & from £17.92 Children (aged 12 & under) including booking fee are available online at www.flydsaarena.co.uk by phone on 0114 256 56 56 or in person at the Arena Box Office.
READER COMPETITION To win a pair of tickets to this spectacular show just answer the question below and send your entry along with a daytime telephone contact number to either info@ mercurynewspaper.co.uk or via post to Mercury Newspaper 4b Queens Road, Sheffield S2 4DG before Friday 20th October.

This week’s Quarter Moon is just a reminder to tune into how others feel as much as your own needs. However, with Jupiter arriving in your sector of shared resources, great possibilities can emerge around business and finance for the first time in twelve years, in the next year for you. Call for more...
Jupiter moves into your 2nd Solar House. All the hard work you’ve invested in the last year can be manifested in a significant improvement in your fortunes. Also, Venus your ruler, returns to your sign. By the end of this week a much greater sense of certainty can take hold in your situation. Call for more...
Mars and Venus continue to occupy a beautiful location, but by the week’s end Venus does relocate into a more practical location. Still, with the joyous energies of Jupiter moving into your sector of relating, exciting opportunities will emerge to link closely with others in the next year. Call for more...
The celestial bugles are sounding, as Jupiter returns to your sign after a twelve year absence. This signals a completely new cycle in your situation. But you mustn’t be passive with Jupiter and just expect it to deliver all we wish, engage yourself in deploying every ounce of talent you have. Call for more...
You can remain focused on making some changes to where you live. The more comfortable and peaceful your surroundings, the more at ease you will be in yourself. However, the Quarter Moon could tempt you to splash out excessively on achieving those goals. Call for more astral advice...
Although your friendship sector has been very positive of late, the attention that you’ve been gathering may have been hard for someone involved in your circle to take. If so, this could show itself more this week, but you must see this as being a sign of the progress you’re making. Call for more news...
The Quarter Moon in your sign this week could see you in something of a dilemma. There may be something that you feel is very important to you that you want to pursue, but it might not necessarily mesh with the people around you quite as they hope or want. Call for more news and advice...
Even in existing relationships, you may find yourself minded to ask not personal, but more searching questions that will just draw you and a partner closer together through a greater understanding of what makes one another tick. Equally, more worldly opportunities can call out to you. Call for more...
There continues to be a tremendous amount of bubbly energy around you. As the week draws to a close, it will get easier to apply your usual charismatic influence to proceedings. But until then, just be mindful of focusing on the strands that matter, or else you could get distracted. Call for more...
Life continues with a more expansive dimension. But the shift of Jupiter midweek to the top of your situation, points towards different types of opportunities. In the next year your career and worldly role may take on a much greater importance in your situation. Success beckons! Call for more...
Venus relocates into your 2nd Solar House, which can be marvellous and lead to a stroke of financial fortune. But talking of fortune, the other big change is even more profound, which sees lucky Jupiter arrive for a year’s stay in the most bubbly and inspiring part of your situation. Call for more...
The ongoing tie between Venus and Mars is such a lovely combination to improve understanding in any relationship. But despite this, the Quarter Moon this week can show those ties that have more of a political side to them than perhaps you’d like. Try to come to terms with these. Call for more...

PLANS FOR SHEFFIELD’S LARGEST-EVER PUBLIC ART COMMISSION UNVEILED
Together they’ll create an immersive sculptural experience, linking Sheffield and Rotherham, that can be enjoyed by foot, bike or boat. Artist Alex Chinneck, who was appointed in 2016, said: “Tinsley has a proud and important industrial heritage and many chimneys once lined the canal. Through a process of architectural re-introduction, sculptural re-imagination and modern manufacturing, we have attempted to create a regionally relevant and nationally significant cultural attraction. ” “The artwork is being made for Sheffield, by Sheffield, and represents a monumental achievement that is only possible by working in partnership with the unrivalled concentration of
world-class companies found in the city.” Previous projects by the artist include a hovering building in Covent Garden, which attracted more than 1.2million visitors over a four-week period, and a house made of 7,500 wax bricks, which proceeded to melt over 45 days. Most recently, Alex installed a temporary sculpture in Tinsley, which appeared to show a one-tonne car hanging upside-down from a curling strip of tarmac. The artwork attracted 5,000 visitors over five days, including the whole of Tinsley Meadows Primary Academy. A project board made up of Tinsley residents and key decision makers is backing the proposal. For further images and information, see www.onwardsandupwards.info, Instagram

Plans for family of four sculptural, red brick chimneys that border, bridge and illuminate the Sheffield and Tinsley Canal have been unveiled as the largest-ever art commission for the city and region. Almost ten years since the demolition of the Tinsley cooling towers, artist Alex Chinneck has unveiled Onwards & Upwards - a sculptural trail that highlights the past, present and potential of the area. Four towering chimneys, each stretching up to 30 metres high and spread across one mile, have been designed to act as spectacular cultural beacons – attracting visitors from the length and breadth of the UK. Each sculpture will be equivalent to the size of a 10-storey building, making it one of the most ambitious public artworks ever conceived. Together they will have a collective height of 150 metres, incorporating 100,000 bespoke curving bricks, wrapped around a stainless steel core. The artist’s permanent proposals for the area, his most ambitious to date, comprise:
• A cracked chimney broken into 250 pieces, beautifully illuminated from within • A hovering chimney with an upper section that appears to miraculously float • Two leaning chimneys, standing 45m apart, that dramatically bridge the canal • A curving chimney, made of over 25,000 bricks, playfully tied into a knot

1234 04/10/2017 REDUCE THE RISK OF ALZHEIMERS TAKE TAX BREAKS
Alzheimer’s isn’t hereditary and there are ways you can lower your risk of developing this form of dementia.
Alzheimer’s disease is a debilitating, complex and ultimately fatal disease, which can be terrifying for the people it affects and heartbreaking for those who love them, but it’s not always fully understood. Over half a million people in the UK suffer from the most common form of dementia – mostly known for the effect it has on someone’s cognitive and functional abilities. While it mainly affects older people, there are still things you can do to help lower your chances of developing Alzheimer’s.
Alzheimer’s. The longer we spend in education when we’re younger, the less likely we are to develop the disease. There’s also research to suggest that learning a new language or starting a short course in adult years may protect against the risk of getting dementia. At present though, there’s less solid evidence around the impact of brain training games, like Sudoku or puzzles. 4. Keep active and find hobbies Exercise is a great all-rounder for lowering your chances of Alzheimer’s. On the one hand, it helps keep a healthy heart, but additional research has shown that participating in different activities and hobbies can lower your risk. Group activities like tennis, bowling or joining a walking group will not only keep you physically healthy, but can also improve your social wellbeing, which again appears to reduce the chances of Alzheimer’s.
1. Stop smoking Few people need to be told that smoking’s bad for their health, but it’s less widely known that the habit increases their chances of developing Alzheimer’s. Smoking is linked with cardiovascular problems which can contribute to the disease. Cutting out smoking won’t just reduce your risk of developing Alzheimer’s – it 5. Married couples are collectively missing out on as much as £1.3bn by not making the most of a recently introduced tax break. When the “marriage allowance” was introduced in 2015/16, it was estimated that 4.2 million couples stood to gain. The allowance aims to help married couples and members of civil partnerships where one partner pays standard rate income tax and the other is a non-taxpayer. The lower earner can transfer any unused tax-free allowance of up to 10 per cent of the value of the full personal allowance to their higher-earning partner. Royal London said that assuming each couple took advantage of the ability to backdate to 2015/16, two million couples could potentially gain up to £662. Sir Steve Webb, a director of policy at Royal London, said: “Even in its third year of operation, around two million couples who could benefit from the marriage allowance are not doing so.”
THE END OF THE ROUND POUND On October 15, the old round £1.00 coin will no longer be classed as legal tender. The only thing you’ll be able to do with it is trade it for a new one at your local bank or post office. However money experts say there are some old editions that you shouldn’t get rid of so check your pockets and purses - for example: The Edinburgh City £1 coin was released in 2011 with a mintage of just 935,000. This coin currently sells for between £12 and £16. The Cardiff City £1 coin - Released in 2011, this coin has a mintage of just 1,615,000. This coin depicts the circular Coat of Arms of Cardiff. This coin is worth between £11 and £15. The London City £1 Coin. This coin has a mintage of 2,635,000, much higher than Edinburgh and Cardiff but low in comparison to other £1 coins. This coin can sell for between £5 and £8. The Scotland Thistle and Bluebell £1 Coin was released in 2014 as part of the floral emblems series and features a thistle alongside a bluebell to represent Scotland. It’s worth between £3 and £5. The ‘Crowned Shield’ - a number of them were withdrawn early due to ‘wear and tear’ which means there are even less of them about. The UK Crowned Shield £1 coin was released way back in 1988, only five years after the round £1 came into circulation. It’s said to be worth between £3 and £5.50. Time to check your purse and piggy bank!

SHEFFIELD STUDENTS GET CREATIVE TO SPRUCE UP STREETS AHEAD GRITTERS
School children and college students in Sheffield will be in with the chance of having their very own designs emblazoned on four of Sheffield’s snow gritters this winter. As part of a competition by Streets Ahead, children and college students across Sheffield have been invited to showcase their artistic talents by creating designs for four of the gritters, which will form part of the fleet keeping the city safe this winter. The competition, targeted at four separate age groups, will see Sheffield’s young art enthusiasts create designs for the side of the vehicles which will be ready just in time for the winter season. Pupils from infant schools have been challenged with creating a design for ‘The Bear’ gritter, whilst junior school students will be designing a new look for ‘Snowy Steve.’ Secondary schools have been asked to design a character or wintry scene to represent ‘Ice Warrior’ and college students studying Art have been asked to create an imaginative snowy Sheffield scene for the fleet’s ‘Steel City’ gritter. The designs will be judged by Cabinet Member for Environment and Street Scene at Sheffield City Council, Councillor Bryan Lodge, Helen Cooke, Education Officer at Amey and Lyndsey Connelly, Operations Manager at Amey. More information about Sheffield’s gritting service is available at www.sheffield.gov.uk/winter . Follow us on Twitter @sccstreetsahead for updates throughout the winter period. To find out more about the competition, contact Amey’s Education Officer on Helen.Cooke@ amey.co.uk

Wedding Guide
Wedding Day Etiquette
is an emergency of course!) When choosing an outfit, it is vital to remember that a bride is the star of the show. It's her day — and as A wedding is neither a guest you must not the time nor the outshine her! Wearing place to ditch the white — or anything decorum — so mind remotely bridal in style your manners and for that matter — is a win your wedding big no-no! guests over with Arriving punctually our education in for the ceremony is etiquette... another must — it is extremely rude to walk Weddings are an ancient custom steeped in after the bride, and what's more, you'll in tradition, and thus miss the best bits of should be celebrated the marriage itself! with equal measures It is also considered of enthusiasm and polite for guests to etiquette. traditionally he should be the last person to leave the reception. Your vicar will normally advise on the correct order of service, but usually the ceremony progresses as follows: Introductory medley; entrance of the bride, (or processional); hymns; marriage vows and prayers; hymn or psalm blessing; signing of the register; recessional. Upon leaving the ceremony, the exit of the wedding party should be in the order of: bride and groom, chief bridesmaid and best man, mother and father of the bride, mother and father of the groom, bridesmaids and attendants, followed by the remaining guests. At the reception, the groom is expected to introduce his bride to any friends or family she has not met before. He must also always thank the bride's parents in his speech
and include a toast to the bridesmaids. Seating your guests however, is perhaps the toughest task when it comes to wedding etiquette, and tackling the top table can be particularly tricky! A traditional format seats the bride and groom together in the centre. The bride is seated on the groom's left. To the bride's left is her father, the groom's mother, and the best man. To the groom's right is the bride's mother, the groom's father, and chief bridesmaid. Alternatives for weddings where the bride's parents are divorced, still seats the bride and groom in the centre, but to the bride's left, is her father, the groom's mother, the best man, and the bride's stepmother. Similarly, to the groom's right sits the bride's mother, groom's father, chief
bridesmaid, and, on the far right the bride's stepmother. A similar model can be applied if it the groom's parents who are divorced and remarried. If you have a more 'unconventional' family arrangement, feel free to adapt the setup in order to best suit your needs! The cutting of the cake should take place after the speeches, and guests should not take to the floor until the bride and groom have had their first dance.
Voilà — now there's no need to sweat over wedding etiquette!

Help change the lives of local cancer patients This week (2nd to 6th October), Weston Park Cancer Charity wants to highlight how small change can make a big difference to people living with and beyond cancer. Collection tins are a simple yet effective way of raising vital funds for Weston Park Hospital and every donation will enable Weston Park Cancer Charity to help more patients and their families in the fight against cancer. As the only charity solely dedicated to supporting Weston Park cancer patients, their projects provide: Practical help to those in need Emotional support to those in despair Enhanced care for those who need it most The local research funded provides access to breakthrough treatments unavailable on the NHS and advances the wider fight against cancer.
Time is running out to spend your round £1 coins Weston Park Cancer Charity is urging the public to donate their old £1 coins to help give patients and their families the strength to fight cancer. On Sunday 15th October, the round coins will cease to be legal tender following the release of the new 12-sided coin earlier in the year. Shops, restaurants and other retailers will no longer be able to accept the coins but Weston Park Cancer Charity can put your money to good use. Jade Hearsum, Community Fundraiser at Weston Park Cancer Charity said: “It’s possible a small fortune could be hiding in piggy banks, down the backs of sofas and in pockets. It might seem like a small amount, but collectively small change makes a huge difference to the lives of those living with and beyond cancer.”
Could your local pub, shop or workplace host a collection tin to help change the lives of local cancer patients? Weston Park Cancer Charity’s secure collection tins can be placed anywhere so it’s a great way to fundraise if you are short on time. To request a collection tin, please contact charityteam@sth.nhs.uk or call 0114 226 5370

Thor-some night at Crookes as Thor reach 200 shows! Saturday 30th September will live long in the memory of Crookes Social Club in Sheffield. It was the night that Thor-Gods of Rock returned to perform their 200th show... AND WHAT A SHOW IT WAS!!! Lee Dodge, front man of the band, told us “it was a special night. The place holds 500 people and it was packed. There were people queuing in the rain to be in early to get their places.” The event was a big event of Thor’s calendar with it being advertised weeks before. An aspect that the band clearly feel is key to success. “We’ve always said the only way to fill venues is to let people know about it. Shout it from the roof tops. All of our most
memorable nights have come about because ourselves and the venue advertise the hell out of it. This was no different.” James Tulley (keyboard) added “To be fair, Maurice (Champeau. Club steward) is amazing. He’s a great guy to work with. He advertised it in local papers, Facebook, local shops. Everywhere! It makes our job so much easier.” Filling venues is certainly easier when a band has a following like Thor have. Their supporters, nicknamed Thorites and Hammerheads, flocked from miles around to see this special show. Drummer, Joe Tulley told us “we have a great fan base. They came from all over for a taste of Saturday. Barnsley,
Derby, the North East, Leicester. It’s stuff like that which makes good nights into great nights. We even beamed it to Croatia for Lee’s Aunty Sue!” With Lee adding “and when you see people coming in wearing tee shirts with your band name on them it gives you an added 10%. We’re lucky to have built the following we have in the relatively short time we’ve been going.” And, if you were in any doubt about how much the “Thorites and Hammerheads” mean to the band, they even took time to have a group photograph with everybody wearing a Thor-Gods Of Rock tee shirt at the end of the night. “It was Lee’s idea. He loves a photo opportunity” Joe explained. “We
were just surprised he didn’t have a make up team and hair stylist in the changing room to prepare him for it!” Feedback is also a major factor in which direction Thor go in too. The Gods Of Rock have a big social media presence and take the comments of those that attend very seriously. Lee explained “we get loads of comments on our Facebook page. A lot of the long term clubland supporters often compare us to clubland legends such as FriteNight, Guns and Oatcakes, Alcatraz. We love that because these were the bands we saw filling venues when we were kids. The comments we’ve had from Saturday were terrific. We even had a terrific write up from our mate
Timmy in RNFR.” With James Tulley adding “we always tried to identify what worked for those guys and develop it, give it a bit of a Thor twist. Then ideas of our own come from there. We get a lot of people in
other bands that see what we do and try it for themselves. We see it as big nod that we’re doing something right.” So, what’s next for Thor? Not a band to sit back on the success of today, Joe
told us “We’ve got a few things that we’re working on. New songs, new clothes and lots of new venues. We’re always looking to move the show forwards. So just watch this space.
Who knows what will happen over the next 200 shows?” Next up for Thor-Gods Of Rock is a trip to Nottinghamshire as they return to Warsop Ex-Servicemen’s Club Of Friday 6th October.

ANGLER’S CORNER
Now that I’ve had a set of Sonik Vader X rods and reels, I can’t stop using them, and was looking forward to putting another carp with Clint Walker through them. Both were set up with a couple I had a short session with my lure rod on a of feet of tungsten tubing, leadclip, and then water I’ve been struggling to find (despite a few inches of Vardis Downfall coated braid, directions) which is sited at the back of an stripped back a couple of inches to allow a industrial estate between a canal, and waste little movement of the new, bigger, Frank ground, in an inner city locale. I chose the Masala Spice pleasing, with the expected abandoned fridge for one rod, and added the Caramel Cream etc, but once you step through the surrounding dumbbell to the other, and each hook link was woodland, prepared to be surprised by a then pulled through a pva stick of Spotted Fin beautiful pair of very attractive lakes! groundbait and pellets hoping to keep the hook I was merrily flicking my lure alongside the link straight and stop it being pulled into the reeds, a couple of casts in each spot, picking mucky silt… Both were gently lobbed out and off small perch, whilst trying to shade my eyes feathered onto the spots, and I sat back to tidy against the sun. As I moved to the far side, my up and wait… lure was taken on the drop by a much bigger Less than fifteen minutes had passed, and, fish, and after struggling to gain any purchase as I sat, peering through the morning mist, for a second or two, it rolled, and I clearly saw watching dragonflies start to unfurl their the flank of a mirror carp as it threw my hook wings, and even spying my first kingfisher back at me. Peering into the dancing reflections of the day, the alarm buzzed, and I looked of bright red dogwood, pale green willow, and across to see the spool steadily unwinding. everything else which confused the rippled Like a coiled sloth, I leapt at the rods not surface of the shallow waters, I noticed that quite believing it was really a fish, and made in some areas, warmed by the sun, the depths contact with what was indeed a carp! The first were clouded by plumes of mud, stirred up by fish of the day hugged the reed line doggedly, busily feeding fish. As I watched, it became refusing to come nearer until I managed to put obvious that the fish were patrolling the a small amount of sidestrain on, and then the marginal reed line, enjoying the sun on their fish kited towards me, away from the haven backs, and in prime position to be ambushed of the reeds. In just a few short minutes, a later in the week! lovely dark mirror, perhaps of around thirteen I returned a few days later, getting to the pounds, lay beaten on the mat, and glistened waterside as dawn broke, and a watery sun wetly in the sunshine; result! I have to admit rose slowly behind the trees. My intention to being pleased, not only with my first fish was to sit in the ‘dark side’ shadows of the from the venue, but also because during my narrow lake, hope that no-one else would previous visit, I’d been told by two anglers on turn up, and cast across into the ‘sunny side’ the other lake that they didn’t fish here, as it reed line which would then have a couple of was too hard! The lake is obviously silty, so I elected came and went, some seeking carp, others to use a predominantly pellet attack, with a after toothy predators, and all stopped for a few boilies added, in the hope that the smaller chat before moving on. Of the carpers, none baits would be slower to sink into the mire. managed to bank anything, and as the sun A couple of handfuls of Red Halibut and started to get low, and the shadows lengthened, Catalyst pellets were mixed with matching I was beginning to think that my first fish boilies, given a glug of the good stuff (Spotted was nothing more than a fluke. under the brolly, I wasn’t likely to get soaked, but it put me off for just a few minutes; long enough in fact for the alarm to buzz again, and the spool to spin once more… Again, it wasn’t a big fish, in fact barely a double, but what it lacked in weight, it made up in appearance, a heavily plated mirror in fine fettle, and a very nice way to finish the day. That made a brace of fish, on new baits, with new gear, and was a result I was more than happy with in a few short hours from a venue I didn’t know, and it just whetted my appetite for more…what else lurks within? There is only one way to find out really isn’t there? I’ll let you know…

The County Senior League brought to an end September on Saturday, with what can only be described as a goal fest. There were 85 goals in the 19 games played. Premier Division We start our round-up in the Premier Division, where a Samuel Scrivens brace helped league leaders AFC Penistone Church Reserves to a 3-0 win away against Wombwell Main. Only a point off the pace is Grimethorpe Sports, who emphatically beat previously second placed South Kirkby Colliery away from home on Saturday. Four games in and Grimethorpe are the only team in the Premier Division with a 100% record. A Carey Welford hat-trick gave North Gawber Colliery a 3-1 win over Frecheville at Davy Sports Ground. Goals from Alex Torr (2) and Gary Cotton gave Oughtibridge WMFC a 3-1 win over 10 men Houghton Main at Middlecliffe Lane. Jubilee Sports shaded a 10 goal thriller with Swinton Athletic 6-4 at Mexborough Athletic Ground. Jubilee had, lost their previous two games without scoring. Denaby Main were brought back down to earth with a bump after last weeks’ derby win, as they suffered 7-1 loss at the hands of Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves. Denaby United ended a run of three consecutive losses, as they drew 2-2 at Old Road with nine men Handsworth Parramore Reserves. The equalising goal for Denaby by Ainsley Finney came in the 88th Minute. Division One Dodworth Miners Welfare Reserves made it six wins from six, with a 4-1 home victory over Silkstone United. Craig Allen, Daniel Barlow, Aaron Brotherton and Ben McLee were all on target for Dodworth, who now have a +21 goal difference. Dodworth’s nearest contenders are Brinsworth Whitehill, after they beat Stocksbridge Park Steels Development 2-1 at the Look Local Stadium. A Sean Ebbs hat-trick inspired Kiveton Park to their first win at their new home Wales High School. Anthony Bayou, Jack Mason, Joshua Shepherd and Daniel Stewart were also in the goals for Kiveton as they beat High Green Villa 7-3. Sheffield Medics suffered their third straight loss, as they were beaten 3-1 away against Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915. Ecclesfield climb into fourth place with the victory. Goals from Will Kemp (2), Connor Williams and Luke Chestney helped Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves o a 4-3 home win over AFC Dronfield. Substitute Martin Brissett scored twice for Caribbean Sports as they drew 4-4 with Wickersley at the Caribbean Sports Ground. The point is Caribbean’s first of the season. Division Two Boynton Sports bounced straight back from their first loss season last time out, as they beat Wombwell Main Development 7-1 at Concord Park. Daniel Parker starred for the league leaders, scoring four times. Second placed Sheffield Bankers Reserves’ four game winning run came to an end, but they remain undefeated, as they were held to a 2-2 draw at home against Working Wonders. The Bankers face Boynton in a couple of weeks’ time at Concord Park. Bradley Clarke scored a hat-trick as New Bohemians beat North Gawber Colliery Reserves at Woolley Miners Welfare. The win makes backto-back wins for New Bohemians for the first time this term. The second 4-4 draw of the day in the County Senior League came at Gosforth Playing Fields, where AFC Dronfield Reserves drew with Thurcroft Miners Institute. The point in Thurcroft’s first of the season. Caribbean Sports Reserves followed last weeks’ win over the league leaders with a 1-1 draw with Manor Hotel Muglet Lane. And to end a goal laden round-up, Swinton Athletic Reserves beat Maltby Main Reserves 1-0 at Swinton Miners Welfare.

ANOTHER HOME WIN FOR MILLERS KIEFFER Moore’s ninth goal of the season proved the difference as Rotherham United earned their fourth home win on the spin at the expense of Northampton Town. In an enthralling opening period, the Millers were denied the breakthrough by two goal line clearances while centre-half Michael Ihiekwe struck the woodwork but Rotherham finally breached Northampton defences, early in the second half, when Moore was the quickest to react after Matt Ingham denied Shaun Cummings to tap home the all-important winner. Following their midweek defeat at the hands of Blackburn Rovers, Millers chief Paul Warne reshuffled his pack for the visit of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s side. Two of the three changes were in the full-back berths with Joe Mattock and Cummings recalled to the starting line-up, at the expense of Will Vaulks and Ben Purrington, who suffered a hamstring injury at Ewood Park. Richie Towell was given an opportunity to impress behind in-form striker Moore while Millers Wembley hero Alex Revell was given a fantastic ovation from the AESSEAL New York Stadium faithful on his latest return to his former club. The visitors were quick out of the blocks and Marek Rodak was on-hand to snuff out Dean Bowditch’s dangerous centre before the Slovakian was forced to scramble across goal as George Smith latched onto a weak home clearance to drill a half-volley which whistled narrowly past the

home upright. In the Millers first foray of note, Moore rose highest to meet Mattock’s hanging centre to power a downward header which Aaron Pierre was forced to hack clear with Ingram failing to take charge before the home side were indebted to Cummings for a timely block from Smith’s goalbound effort following Daniel Powell’s incisive run and cross. The Millers came within a whisker of the opener when Moore caused havoc in the Town defence and Towell latched onto the loose ball to clip a delicate ball over the top and Moore, who had beaten the offside trap, rounded Ingram, but from a tight angle, the Ipswich loanee attempted to squeeze the ball in at the near post but Ash Taylor came out of nowhere with a miraculous recovery to turn his effort around the post. From the resultant corner, Ryan Williams planted a dangerous centre which fell invitingly for Moore, who volleyed goalwards but a combination of Ingram and Pierre bravely kept the ball out from close range before Joe Newell was the next to pick out the Millers frontman, from the next home corner, but Moore could not keep his point-blank header down as it cleared the crossbar. Despite Moore’s best efforts, Northampton almost grabbed the opener against the run of play when Rotherham failed to deal with a long punt forward and Powell showed the home rearguard a quick pair of heels to bear down on the home goal, but he fluffed his lines when he dragged his effort harmlessly wide of the target. Moments later,

Revell was the quickest to react from Smith’s left-wing cross but the former Miller could not direct his header goalwards before Moore again threatened the Town goal when he out-jumped Pierre but Ingram was well-stationed to gather on his own goal line. In the Millers next attack, Matt Grimes was forced to blast clear as Mattock’s stooping header looked to be sneaking in at the near post before the Millers came within a coat of paint of the breakthrough when Towell floated a delicate centre which was controlled superbly by Moore and the Ipswich loanee, in attempting to work a shooting position, saw the ball ricochet into the path of Ihiekwe, who calmly stroked the ball goalwards but Ingram pulled off a top-drawer save to tip his effort onto the woodwork, before the ball was diverted to safety. The visitors’ goal was living a charmed life and Moore’s slide-rule pass gave Lee Frecklington a glimpse of goal and the Millers skipper stung the palms of Ingram with a snap effort from just inside the box before Williams embarked on a mazy run, which left Grimes and David Buchanan in his wake, as he curled a left-footed effort which forced Ingram into another sprawled save. Moore was proving a handful for the Town defence and Pierre’s frustration boiled over with a clumsy tackle on the home striker and Rotherham almost exacted retribution from Newell’s resultant free-kick, when his drilled through ball evaded the attentions of Moore but Ihiekwe showed good awareness to shoot goalwards from a tight angle and despite Ingram being in no man’s land, Brandan Moloney was on-hand to divert the ball to safety with another goal line clearance. Following the interval, the Cobblers had the first sight of goal when Bowditch took aim from distance but Rodak got his body behind his longrange effort before Mattock was on-hand with a timely tackle to prevent Powell from breaking clear, just moments later. However, it was the Millers, who took a grip on the game by grabbing the opener, just seven minutes into the half, when the home side’s raid down the right flank ended when Cummings fired a snap effort which Ingram, in the rain-soaked conditions, attempted to parry to safety, but the ball struck Taylor and bounced fortunately into the path of Moore, who made no mistake to tap home from close range. Moments later, a fine flowing home move involving Frecklington paved the way for Williams to fire an effort which was straight down the throat of Ingham before Moore beat the visitors offside trap to strike from distance but Taylor came out of nowhere with a fine block. Moore was a man on a mission and Taylor again came to Town’s
rescue with another block as the Millers striker threatened the visitors goal before Williams was put in the clear thanks to a lovely threaded ball but the ball skipped off the wet AESSEAL New York Stadium surface as Ingram was able to smother the ball at the Australian’s feet before he could get his shot away. In a rare Cobblers foray, Rotherham were caught napping following a visitors corner and Powell’s skimming effort forced Rodak into a smart save at his near post before Regan Poole had an effort deflected behind, just moments later. The visitors were building up a head of steam and sub Billy Waters got the ball from under his feet to strike a rasping effort which took a slight deflection as it narrowly cleared the home crossbar before Grimes cut in from the byline to fire a dipping effort which had Rodak nervously looking over his shoulder as it fizzed just inches wide of the target. Minutes later, Cummings clipped ball over the top was taken superbly in his stride by Ihiekwe, who beared down on the Town goal but his tame effort was smartly gathered by Ingram before Rotherham failed to clear the danger, at the other end, and Bowditch looked set to test Rodak before Mattock’s superb intervention. With the game in the balance, Ihiekwe put his body on the line to deny Grimes before Rotherham sprang a quick counter and Frecklington’s pass saw Towell get on the wrong side of Buchanan in the box but the Town full-back recovered superbly to block his goalbound effort. Moments later, Rotherham came within a whisker of sealing the deal when Newell swung over a tantalising corner which saw Moore emerge from the masse of bodies in the box to power a superb header which smashed against the crossbar with Ingram beaten before Darren Potter took one for the team by nudging over Waters in full flow. Minutes later, Newell’s threaded ball saw sub Jonson Clarke-Harris break clear and despite the attempts of Buchanan to get in a tackle, the Rotherham striker fired a left-footed effort which forced Ingram into a tipped save as it cannoned into the side netting before Moloney’s clearance ricocheted off Frecklington, as the ball looped narrowly over the Cobblers goal. In a frenetic final few minutes, sub Vaulks failed to ease home nerves when he slashed at goal after being put clear but Paul Warne’s men successfully ran down the clock to claim the three points.
TO BASICS POINTLESS TRIP FOR ROVERS AGAIN BACK FOR BOSS DARREN
Rovers performed well for large periods of the trip to Bradford City, but were undone by two headed goals late in the opening half. Rovers started the game brightly, and had much of the early possession of the game as they looked to avenge Tuesday night’s late defeat. And the visitors had the game’s first chance, with Tommy Rowe receiving the ball on the edge of the area, but his shot was blocked by Nathaniel Knight-Percival and away for an early corner. John Marquis was next to try his luck from just outside the box but, like Rowe, his strike took a deflection and was this time held comfortably by Colin Doyle in the Bantams’ goal. Rovers were enjoying a great spell of possession, and from their next attack came another effort that could have put them ahead. Rodney Kongolo broke down the right-hand side for the visitors and floated the ball over for Alfie May to bring the ball down. May controlled the ball well, but his shot was tame and once again Doyle was able to get down easily to collect the ball. Much like the rest of the opening 15 minutes, it was Rovers who went closest once more, and this time it was May with Rovers best effort of the first half. May collected the ball from Rowe and created enough space to get a shot away. His shot was blocked once more, this time by former Rovers loanee Matthew Kilgallon, on to a post and behind for a corner. Against the run of play, though, the home side took the lead. Good work down the left-hand side between Paul Taylor and Adam Chicksen saw the latter able to put the ball into the box. Chicksen’s cross was met by the head of the towering Charlie Wyke, and his header

was low past Marko Marosi and into the far corner. It could have been two just moments later, with a corner causing problems for the Rovers’ defence and, after a scramble, the ball was poked home by Wyke again, but this time the referee brought play back for a foul on the visiting keeper. Marquis was eager to get Rovers back on level terms, finding space 25 yards out and having a go once more, but this time his strike was wide of Doyle’s post and the hosts remained in front. Things went from bad to worse for Rovers not long after, and they doubled their lead as the game drifted towards half time. A corner from Tony McMahon was met by the head of the un-marked Knight Percival, and he headed through a wall of Rovers defenders and into Marosi’s goal to extend the Bantams’ lead. In similar fashion to the first half, the second period saw Rovers put on the early pressure, with Rowe, May and then Whiteman all testing Doyle in the Bradford goal but the visitors were starting to get frustrated in their attempts to get an early goal back. Poleon went close for the hosts too, but his shot was saved well by Marosi as the striker bared down on goal, oneon-one with the Rovers’ keeper. Surprisingly, it was Butler who was next to go closest for Rovers - and he wasn’t far away either. Toffolo pumped a free-kick up to the centre half, and he brought the ball down and turned to shoot on goal, but Butler’s curling effort from the edge of the area went just wide. Whiteman was next to try and get Rovers back into the game, trying to curl a free kick in from 25 yards out, Doyle was equal once again though and tipped the ball around the post. Substitute
James Coppinger was next to try and get a goal back for the visitors, but his shot from 20 yards was curled just wide. Rowe had Rovers final chance of the game, a header from a Coppinger corner being met well, but Knight-Percival was there on the line to block the goal-bound header and ensured that the hosts maintained their clean sheet. Rovers will be disappointed to have lost a game that they controlled for much of the 90 minutes, however the first-half headers from Wyke and Knight-Percival ultimately left the visitors with too much to do. Rovers now have two home games in a row to get back to winning ways, firstly against Sunderland under-21’s in the Checkatrade Trophy, before Southend United visit the Keepmoat in Sky Bet League One.
Darren Ferguson vowed to get back to basics after Rovers’ frustrating loss at Bradford City. The Rovers manager felt his side performed well in the opening periods of the game and after the break, but that was not enough to stop defeat after conceding twice from headers late in the opening half. He said: “It’s deja vu, in the first 15 minutes or so we were excellent and really dominated the game but didn’t get a goal. We’re not doing the basics right in both boxes and it’s not good enough - we’d told them we needed to stop the crosses and be disciplined at set-pieces. We kept going, but that is a gimme. We keep saying the same things, but a lot of the things the boys did was good, there just wasn’t the end product. The players still have plenty of belief.” Ferguson made one change to the starting XI, bringing Ben Whiteman back in and resting James Coppinger. He expects to rotate his squad as much as he can for Tuesday’s visit of Sunderland U21 in the Checkatrade Trophy. He added: “There will be as many changes as I can possibly make in that game, it’s been a tough month with so many games. We’ve tried to manage them as best we can in the week between games, we’ve not done too much work on the grass and kept them as fresh as we can.”

BLADES UNLUCKY AT FOREST United suffered defeat on the eve of the international break but only after a tremendous effort at Forest on Saturday. John Lundstram scored an early goal and Cameron CarterVickers saw an injurytime header strike the woodwork Wilder freshened his team. For the fixture down the M1, Lundstram, Duffy and Donaldson started and one made an instant impact! Clarke, Wright and Brooks dropped to the bench. For the first two minutes, Forest barely made it out of their half. O’Connell was constantly on the attack and Duffy, Fleck and Coutts saw plenty of the ball. But the opening goal, just as the game entered the third minute, saw Stevens make space for himself on the left and deliver a low cross for the arriving LUNDSTRAM to sweep home from just inside the box. The start, by both sides, was high-energy and Forest levelled with their first serious foray into Blades territory. Following a poorlyexecuted corner by the home side, Fleck’s pass was cut out by CUMMINGS, who fired beyond Blackman’s right arm.
The action-packed start continued with United enjoying the better of the chances. Again Stevens found space on the left but this time Duffy’s effort was blocked and Lundstram fired wide after cutting back onto his left foot On 19 minutes, the ball was in Forest’s net again but the lead was not restored. A curling cross from Duffy may or may not have been touched by an offside Baldock but an assistant official’s flag was raised. United were doing most of the attacking but Forest were clinical when they crossed the halfway line and went ahead on 27 minutes. From Darikwa’s deep cross, Murphy side-footed back into the danger area and DOWELL’s first time effort was placed into the bottom corner. Shots from Duffy and Fleck were straight at goalkeeper Smith in response but the Blades were dealt a further blow when Baldock went down injured and needed to be replaced. Wright was introduced and Basham was redeployed down the right. Late in the half the better of the chances belonged to Forest. Blackman parried away a Cummings shot after
O’Connell prevented Murphy getting to a Traore cross, Murphy then headed over and the striker put an opportunity on a plate for Cummings on the right but the subsequent shot was wide. There was one more chance in the four minutes of added time but the build up from Fleck, Duffy and Lundstram resulted in Basham’s shot being deflected wide. The early chances in the second half went Forest’s way. Osborn’s off-target shot deflected off Carter-Vickers and rolled just wide of Blackman’s right post and then Bouchalakis headed wide a deep cross, prompting boss Wilder into a couple of changes - Clarke replacing Donaldson and Brooks taking over from goalscorer Lundstram Duffy failed to hit the target from range but United got back on top - there was a nervous moment for goalkeeper Smith as Brooks almost charged down a clearance. Dowell fired over for Forest when they had numbers over following a break on 74 minutes and the action remained fast-paced as the final 15 minutes approached. A freekick routine saw Fleck and Coutts almost put
Duffy in but Forest repelled the effort and with five seconds of normal time left Smith produced an acrobatic save to keep out a Duffy shot. United went closer still in injury-time when a Stevens cross saw Carter-Vickers rise highest but his header struck a post and the goalkeeper before Forest scrambled a clearance.Very late on Forest managed the game well in terms of keeping possession to hold on for the points, but there was a standing ovation from the Blades fans as the players left the pitch.

Chris Wilder felt his side deserved at least a share of the spoils from Saturday’s clash against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground. John Lundstram opened the scoring, netting his first United goal after on three minutes, but first-half replies from Jason Cummings and Kieran Dowell proved to be decisive for the home side, despite Cameron Carter-Vickers hitting Billy Sharp and Leon the post late on. But speaking after Clarke have both demonstrated they can a first loss in three, Wilder was upbeat WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH still score goals at this in his assessment, level. impressed with our performance, we’re on the right track.” Reflecting on the opening two months of the campaign, the Blades boss is more than satisfied with what his team has produced. Concluding his thoughts on the loss against Mark Warburton’s Reds, he added: “I’m delighted with the first 11 games, the second international break was always going to be key and we’ve had some outstanding results too. On the back of Sunday and Wednesday and with Forest hurting this was always going to be tough, but we’ve had a fantastic month. We now have to find
a level of consistency moving forward and I would have loved to have had a game next week. But we have to utilise the break to its maximum and go again. We’ve got a target on our back and I’m delighted we’ve got a target on our back because it shows we’ve done something right. This was a fantastic game of football at a proper football club featuring two committed sides and apart from the result I really enjoyed it. But I’m delighted with what’s in the changing room and long may it continue.

HAPPY OWLS BREAK LOSING STREAK An improved display from Wednesday, with a Gary Hooper double and Kieran Lee strike, saw Leeds beaten 3-0 in the White Rose Derby. Carlos Carvalhal’s side were proficient all over the pitch, particularly in the first half, and got their reward for a convincing performance that fully merited maximum points. The visitors improved after the break but the bulk of the damage was done, sending the Owls flying into the international break. Wednesday bossed
possession during the early exchanges, but conversely, Leeds had the better of the chances before the tide turned. Samuel Saiz was the architect, setting up openings for Kalvin Phillips and Esgjan Alioski, but the finishing belied the approach play on both occasions. Wednesday pressed on and really started to dominate. Adam Reach fired a warning shot that was deflected wide midway through the half – and that went unheeded as the Owls scored from their next attack on 25 minutes. Ross Wallace
delivered an accurate feed to the back post, where Tom Lees headed across for Hooper to stab home. Five minutes later, it could and should have been 2-0. Barry Bannan threaded a super pass into the path of Lee, who prodded over Felix Wiedwalk only to see an offside flag cut the celebrations short. Replays suggested the goal should have stood and few would have argued if the hosts’ advantage had doubled. And only three minutes passed before another chance came Wednesday’s way, this time Steven

The prolific hitman’s excellent spell continued on Sunday as Hooper bagged a brace against Yorkshire rivals Leeds United. The striker was desperately unfortunate not to hit a hat-trick, going close in stoppage time hitting the crossbar. After the game, he told swfc.co.uk: “We needed that, I thought we came out today and played some very good football and the clean sheet came. We’ve had the same feeling in the dressing room, we knew we had to win after two losses but we kept it the same, worked hard and we got the win and a great one at that. We scored three goals but for sure it could have been more. I should
other end, where Wiedwald saved well from Wallace. Bannan smashed against the upright in the closing stages and a third goal seemed inevitable. It duly came nine minutes from time when Lee drilled a loose ball out of the reach of the despairing Wiedwald and into the bottom corner from distance and the game was put to bed. Still there was time for Hooper to crash a blistering effort against the bar in stoppage tiime and a hat-trick from the in-form striker was the only thing missing from a convincing derby win.
HOT STREAK CONTINUES be scoring a hat-trick, the keeper has got a hand to the last one so, no hat-trick today but hopefully one will come eventually.” Hooper’s outstanding stats in front of goal perhaps should read eight goals in the last seven but for his strike at Birmingham ruled out in midweek. He added: “I don’t think I’ve been on a run like this before, it should be eight in seven with the goal at Birmingham, I was onside and if that had counted, I’m sure we would have won the game. The main thing is the three points today heading into the international break. My confidence is very high, we are playing very good football and when you play like that, you will create chances and that showed today. We have a nice break now and we look forward to Bolton.”
