BONFIRE CIRCUS EXTRAVAGANZA COMES TO TOWN Bonfire Night has been a traditional British celebration for many years and this year a circus theme fireworks extravaganza is to be hosted at one of the town’s favourite attractions. Doncaster Racecourse, in conjunction with Hallam FM, will hold its glittering ‘Firework Spectacular’ event on Saturday 4th November with the family friendly event culminating in a musical firework display at 7.30pm, which visitors will enjoy from a covered viewing area guaranteeing

enjoyment, come rain or shine! “Bonfire Night is always great fun for all the family and we are keen to keep this tradition going strong in the town,” said Abby Chandler Head of Marketing at Doncaster Racecourse. “Our event has been carefully thought out to ensure all members of the family can come along and have some fun.” Attractions and activities at the event include Mr Dan’s Circus Company where children will be encouraged to have a go in the Circus Workshop, face

painting, fairground rides and stalls, and a fire trickster. Furthermore, a fancy dress competition will take place for those attending in circus themed costume. “We encourage families and groups of friends to get together and come and enjoy a fun few hours on home turf this Bonfire Night,” said Abby. “And remember, almost all entertainment is free once you’ve paid for your admission ticket including the firework display and huge children’s disco that will be taking place in the main hall.”

REGIONAL EDITION

Tickets can be prebooked or purchased on the night. A family ticket (for 4 people) costs just £10. Individual tickets are available. From the top, the views really are immense and you will see Sheffield like you’ve never seen it before. It’s pretty surreal, stepping over the edge goes against all your natural instincts, but as you descend the building the adrenaline hits and when you reach the ground you’ll want to go straight back up there and do it all again. Each year we get people that have abseiled numerous times before but the majority have never even considered the idea. You don’t need any experience; our fantastic team will tell you

On 28 October around 60 brave Yorkshire men and women will take on the daunting, but exciting, Steel City Abseil in aid of the British Red Cross. The abseil, which takes place down the Owen Building in Sheffield city centre, stands at 120ft (37m) high and every year sees the brave people of Sheffield and the surrounding areas take on this Halloween challenge. Rachel Beresford, Community Fundraiser for the British Red Cross in Yorkshire said: “This is such a unique event with a unique view of Sheffield city centre.

SHEFFIELD THEATRES ANNOUNCE NEW SEASON OF EXCITING SHOWS Sheffield Theatres has announced a myriad of exciting new shows set to take to the stage in spring 2018, including dazzling musicals, hard-hitting dramas, original productions and much-loved classics. In the Crucible there will be one regional première, two major modern classics and one world première in 2018. Frost/Nixon opens the season from Wednesday 21 February – Saturday 17 March. Written by Peter Morgan and directed by Kate Hewitt (Tribes); Frost/Nixon is the compelling dramatisation of the postWatergate TV interviews between former U.S President, Richard Nixon and international socialite and famous chat show host, Sir David Frost. The first of the major modern classics will be a co-production with the Donmar Warehouse. Sheffield Theatres’ Artistic Director Robert Hastie will direct The York Realist by Peter Gill, starring Ben Batt (W1A, Shameless) and Lesley Nicol (Downton Abbey). A cottage in 1960s Yorkshire; The York Mystery Plays are in rehearsal and farmhand George strains against his roots as a new world opens up to him. The York Realist will run at the Crucible from Tuesday 27 March – Saturday 7 April. The second will be the stage adaptation of cult classic, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (Thursday 7 June – Saturday 23 June). Determined to avoid a term in jail, small time criminal McMurphy opts to spend his sentence in a psychiatric ward. As the reality of his incarceration dawns, he comes up against the authoritarian Nurse Ratched,

who is not about to give up her regime of discipline and order without a fight. One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest will be directed by Javaad Alipoor, Resident Associate Director at Sheffield Theatres. Javaad is also Artistic Director of Bradford based company, Northern Lines, and is fresh from success at the Edinburgh Festival with his oneman production, The Believers Are But Brothers, which won a prestigious Fringe First. Finally, the world première of Sheffield People’s Theatre’s production of Songs From the Seven Hills – a brand new musical which brings to life stories inspired by the people of this proud city of steel. Directed by Emily Hutchinson, this heartfelt ode to our vibrant city will run in the Crucible from Wednesday 18 July – Saturday 21 July. Following the success of last year’s The Who’s Tommy; Sheffield Theatres presents the latest Ramps on the Moon project: Our Country’s Good from Saturday 12 May – Saturday 19 May. Telling the extraordinary true story of a group of convicts and a young officer who rehearse and perform Australia’s first theatrical production, Our Country’s Good will feature the creative use of integrated audio description, captioning and British Sign Language interpretation. In the Lyceum this season: Northern Ballet present Jane Eyre, choreographed by Cathy Marston from Tuesday 10 – Saturday 14 April. Prepare for glitz and glamour with The Rat Pack: Live from Las Vegas from Tuesday 1 – Saturday 5 May. English Touring

Opera will bring two spectacular productions on Friday 11 and Saturday 12 May; The Marriage of Figaro and Il tabarro/Gianne Schicchi. Finally, following the sold-out success of The Red Shoes, Matthew Bourne will bring Cinderella to the Lyceum from Tuesday 15 – Saturday 19 May. These new shows complete the season, joining the previouslyannounced ART (Monday 16 – Saturday 21 April), An Officer and a Gentleman (Monday 4 – Saturday 9 June) and Quartet (Tuesday 20 – Saturday 24 February). Across the season, the Studio is set to host an extensive range of touring productions, including: From Ibiza to the Norfolk Broads (Tuesday 30 – Wednesday 31 January), The Bare Theatre Company’s production of On the Outskirts of a Large Event (Wednesday 14 – Thursday 15 March), Up ‘n’ Under – a coproduction between fingersmiths and New Wolsey Theatre (Friday 16 – Saturday 17 March), the distinct and compelling Sofa (Tuesday 3 April), an Eclipse Theatre Company and Royal Exchange Theatre co-production of Black Men Walking (Monday 9 – Thursday 12 April), Mountains – The Dreams of Lily Kwok (Monday 21 – Wednesday 23 May), and, finally, the critically acclaimed Fleabag (Wednesday 30 May – Saturday 2 June). Tickets for all new season productions will go on sale to Centre Stage Members - who enjoy exclusive discounts and priority booking - on Saturday October 14. General booking will open on Saturday 21 October at 10.00am.

PHIL COLLINS IS OUT OF RETIREMENT & STILL NOT DEAD YET...

Night after night on his incredible comeback tour, Phil Collins has introduced his show to the audience by simply saying that he has missed them. And he wasn’t kidding. After postponing two shows of his recent Royal Albert Hall series until November due to an injury, Phil has decided to keep the celebration going by announcing more live dates for the end of the year adding a FlyDSA Arena date on Friday 24th November, which is over twenty years since his last visit to the venue where he played 2 sell-out shows back in November 1994. One of the great British musicians is back performing, having just returned to the stage for his first live dates in 10 years. His performances have received rave reviews from media and fans alike, with his incredible band storming venues every night, including his 16 year old son Nick taking his dad’s place on drums. “It took just a few moments on stage and singing with the fans to convince me that this was the best idea I’ve had in years,” says Phil of the recent shows,

ALBERT SNODGRASS

My old man would never go down without a fight. That’s why I’d never get in a lift with him. How many beers does it take to get a tropical bird drunk? Toucans. How does an evil cow laugh? Moohaha I woke up with a face full of rice this morning. I fell asleep as soon as my head hit the pilau. Which spice girl can hold the most petrol? Geri can. A referee has just walked into the bar. I think it’s gonna kick off. Last night i tried wife swapping for the first time, it’s brilliant!! I managed to get a new lawnmower for mine. Just been to the supermarket and swapped 50 raisins for 100 sultanas. Can’t believe the currant exchange rate!

How many UK Number 1’s has Phil Collins achieved?

“There’s so much love and so much fun. We decided to share that with as many people as we could.” June 2017 saw Phil Collins perform a 3 night residency at London’s iconic Royal Albert Hall, as well as shows in Paris and Cologne. With 100 million record sales to his name, Number 1 albums the world over and songs that have soundtracked millions of lives, Phil Collins is a legend whose work has received growing acclaim as a new generation of artists have discovered and been inspired by an incredible career. Artists from Adele, to Pharrell, Lorde, Kanye West and Beyoncé have talked of their love for his music in recent times, since Phil announced his retirement from music in 2011. He last toured in 2007. Phil made his live return at an event for his own Little Dreams Foundation last year, before performing two of his biggest hits at the opening of the US Open tennis in New York in August, inspiring him to announce his first headline tour in a decade. One the most successful artists of his generation, with more UK Top 40 singles than any other artist of the 1980s, Phil Collins came to prominence first as drummer and then as frontman of Genesis, making his solo debut with 1981’s album Face Value, containing smash hit single ‘In The Air Tonight.’ He followed this with an extraordinary run as a prolific hit maker. 3 UK Number ones - Easy Lover, You Can’t Hurry Love and Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now) - as well as 7 US Number 1s and global smashes including One More Night, Separate Lives, Two Hearts, Another Day In Paradise, I Wish It Would Rain Down, Both Sides Of The Story and Dance Into The Light to name but a few. His long awaited memoir Not Dead Yet: The Autobiography was published in November 2016 by Penguin Random House and after reissuing all of Phil Collins’ studio records throughout last year, a career-spanning selection of hits ‘The Singles’ is available on 2 CD, 3 CD, 4 LP and digital download from Atlantic Records.

The Cinnamon Trust is the national charity whose wonderful volunteers help people over retirement age and those in the latter stages of a terminal illness by offering all kinds of pet care. We urgently need volunteers in Deepcar who are able to help a local resident with some walks for Tilly their adorable 9 year old Whippet cross. If you would like to volunteer to help we would be delighted to hear from you. A major investigation by MoneySavingExpert.com reveals 10,000s of the most vulnerable people in England, Scotland and Wales are being overcharged up to £400 a year due to a council tax postcode lottery. Their new research, based on data obtained under the Freedom of Information Act and a mystery-shopping exercise – concludes up to 100,000 people who are entitled to a 25% council tax discount could be missing out. This is mainly due to inappropriate information being given about the discount by local councils. Two-thirds of those councils they mystery-shopped gave incorrect information, while some frontline staff were apparently unaware of the existence of the discount. Council tax staff were also unable to clearly explain to the MSE ‘applicant’ the criteria for eligibility or how to submit a claim for the discount. Council tax rules state that those diagnosed as ‘severely mentally impaired’ – which covers conditions such as dementia, but also many others, and who are eligible for certain benefits, are ‘disregarded for council tax purposes’. This means if they live with one other person, usually their carer, the household is entitled to a 25% council tax discount. Those living alone are entitled to a 100% discount, so they don’t pay council tax at all. Martin Lewis said: “The law rightfully recognises that many vulnerable people

who have a severe mental impairment such as dementia or Alzheimer’s are entitled to a council tax reduction. Sadly, many local councils do not, and the result is that society’s most vulnerable face a postcode lottery with huge variance in take-up depending on where people live. I would urge any family affected by this to speak to their local council. Not only are many due a reduction of £400+ a year, but it can be backdated for years. The people who are missing out on this are among the most vulnerable in our society and can’t fight for themselves. They should not be left to battle this alone. Better awareness is fundamental – and all councils should agree to allow backdating, or at the very least each council should publish a clear policy. There should be an urgent review by central and devolved Government of how local councils are applying the SMI discount, including setting up a standardised procedure, with one form, to make it easy to claim, regardless of postcode.” Leading charities including Dementia UK, Carers UK , and Alzheimer’s Society have welcomed MSE’s investigation and backed their call for action. A Government spokesperson said: “The law is clear that where people are severely mentally impaired, their council tax bill should take account of this. We expect all local councils to make sure that people entitled to this support receive it.”

MERCURYLIVE THE SHERLOCKS FLY THE FLAG FOR SOUTH YORKSHIRE AT LEEDS FESTIVAL by John Webster

The Sherlocks had more than one reason to celebrate at Bramham Park at this year’s annual music festival. Not only did they play to a packed out NME tent, but their debut album ‘Live for the Moment’ went in at number six in the charts. Before their set the indie rockers seemed confident and excited about what was to come. Lead singer Kiaran Crook said: “Festivals bring people together and at Leeds everyone seems to proper commit themselves. They don’t just come to watch the set, they come to get involved.” He added: “It’s been an eventful few years for us but we haven’t taken our eyes off the ball. We don’t have many days off so if we’re not gigging we’re always meeting up and trying to think of ways to better ourselves.” “We’re proud to be from Yorkshire and representing the Yorkshire scene. There are some top bands from the area and I don’t think it gets enough recognition.” The four lads from Bolton-uponDearne took to the NME stage shortly afterwards and showed a rapturous crowd what they were all about. ‘Live for the Moment’ already sounds like a festival classic and the sing-a-long to ‘Chasing Shadows’ was one of the highlights of the weekend. It might be early days for this young band, but they are definitely heading in the right direction. Stockport five-piece Blossoms have enjoyed a staggering rise over the last few years and were third from the top of the Main Stage roster. A

fine example to upcoming bands of what hard work can achieve. Hits like ‘Charlamagne’ and ‘Blown Rose’ had Bramham Park bouncing as the sun began to set on Friday evening. Liam Gallagher then strolled onto the Main Stage and delivered Oasis classic, ‘Rock n Roll Star’ to an almighty response from the ecstatic crowd. Further hits like ‘Wonderwall’ were to follow as were new songs from LGs new album, ‘As You Were’. The Manchester legend still has plenty of swagger and has lost none of his charismatic stage presence. Headlining the first day, with dazzling visuals and crazier outfits than ever, were Muse. The Devonshire trio opened with latest single, ‘Dig Down’, and the crowd were sent into raptures with ‘Plug in Baby’ as the greatest hits sounded out during the euphoric set. Opening the Main Stage on Saturday were London based rockers Judas. Never has a band looked so happy to be on such a historic platform, and they blew away any hangovers and cobwebs with an excellent performance. Frontman John Clancy said afterwards: “It was an absolute honour to open the Main Stage. We’ve been preparing for it for so long but when it’s actually happening it’s a feeling like no other. To see hundreds of people out there, many of who had Judas t-shirts on, singing the words was so humbling.” The Amazons made the trip up from Reading and were all guns blazing in the Festival Republic tent. The four-piece opened with ‘Stay with me’ and never took their foot off the gas throughout the high-energy set.

It wasn’t just a weekend of rock n roll though, there was something for everyone. Grime artists, world class DJs, and comedians added to the genre-diverse line-up and the beautiful weather made the music sound even better. Fatboy Slim treated a chaotic Dance tent to a sublime gig as Saturday night came to an end while Main Stage headliners Kasabian rocked their way through a seemingly endless catalogue of hits including ‘Underdog’ and ‘Fire’. They might have had an early slot on Sunday morning but Hampshire trio Blaenavon did not hold back. The NME tent was blown away by songs from their ‘That’s Your Lot’ album. It was an enthralling show that finished with frontman Ben Gregory crowd surfing among the revellers. Manchester neo-punks Cabbage are one of the most exciting bands around at the moment and they did not disappoint. They took the NME stage by storm, blasting out favourites like ‘Terrorist Synthesizer’ and ‘Fickle’ as mosh pits erupted among another bumper gathering. The highlight of the weekend came at the end as one of the biggest artists on the planet, Eminem, exploded onto the Main Stage. Accompanied by backing singers, a full band, and his on-stage hype man Mr Porter, the rap icon stormed his way through classics like ‘Business’ and ‘Sing for the Moment’. After a chilling version of ‘The Monster’, the crowd went absolutely berserk as ‘Lose Yourself’ brought the festival to a close under a shower of fireworks. “We’ll remember this gig for the rest of our lives” said Eminem, and it’s fair to say that the 90,000 people in attendance won’t forget it either.

THE SHOW MUST GO ON – CLUBLAND GIANTS STEP IN TO CELEBRATE THE LIFE OF BOBBY KNUTT The last act to ever perform with Bobby Knutt is set to headline a night in his memory later this month. The South Yorkshire comedy heavyweight was all set to go back to his 1970s clubland roots and perform at the launch night of Neil Anderson’s ‘Dirty

Stop Out’s Guide to Working Men’s Clubs’ book - but he tragically died a few days ago. Now The Grumbleweeds – one of the biggest acts on the circuit in the 1970s – have stepped in and are set to perform their brand new show in memory of the star.

Bobby Knutt - known to millions in recent months as Eddie Dawson in ITV’s Benidorm - gave his last ever interview to local author Neil Anderson for the book. The ‘Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to Working Men’s Clubs’ launch night will now be a tribute to Bobby Knutt and includes performances by comedian Jimmy Carol, Stephanie King and the girls from Elysium and, in proper club night fashion, bingo is also included. The event takes place at The Walkley (Formerly Walkley Working Men’s Club) on Friday, October 27th, at 8pm.

Tickets are £10 and available in advance from The Walkley or call Stephanie King to book on 07745 942071. The event will also be raising funds for local children’s charities. The Walkley is situated at 207 Providence Rd, Sheffield S6 5BH

with the laws found in most European countries. The RAC research suggests 59% of respondents are behind the idea of stricter laws, with 21% of those happy to see it go even lower, to 20mg per 100ml. It appears fear of dangerous drunk-drivers is a chief concern for motorists, with almost a quarter of those surveyed for the RAC Report citing this as their main worry on the roads. Despite law-tightening north of the border, a weeklong Police Scotland crackdown earlier this year uncovered that too many drivers are still “making the wrong decisions”, with over 100 caught in the weeklong campaign. In both 2012 and 2016, a total of 143 people lost their lives in drink-driving related incidents, with very similar numbers recorded in the years in between. RAC road safety spokesman Pete Williams says it’s time the Government moved with the times and fell in line with the “large sway” of other countries enforcing the lower limit. “The benefits of the lower limit in Scotland picture will be clearer when the 2016 reported road casualty data is published later this month, but should a drop in drink-related accidents at the wheel be seen then, this should be evidence enough to trigger a change in the law,” he added. “And, even if it doesn’t, can we really afford not to follow the majority who operate a 50mg limit if there is even the slightest chance that it will lead to fewer lives being lost or ruined?”

SUPPORT STRICTER DRINK-DRIVING LAWS

Fifty years after drink-driving was made illegal almost 60% of current-day motorists want to see it even more tightly regulated. Data from the RAC’s 2017 Report on Motoring shows six in 10 of the 1,727 drivers asked are in favour of reducing the legal blood-alcohol limit in England and Wales. The RAC is urging the Government to bring the countries in line with Scotland and Northern Ireland by lowering the acceptable level from 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood to 50mg, or even lower. England and Wales has never altered its legal limit in the half-century since the first laws came in together with the introduction of roadside breath testing. Scotland, however, lowered its legal level to 50mg almost three years ago – and Northern Ireland is in the process of doing the same – bringing it in line

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

It’s the ‘official’ start of the pike season this week, and in truth, I’ve been itching to put out a deadbait since March! I really enjoy my winter pike fishing, on banks shrouded with autumnal mists, or adorned with crispy frosts, and as a real bonus, there are far less anglers on the bank! With that in mind, I returned to a club water I’ve not been to for some months, intent on putting out an early pike rod, and also a leger rod, because I wanted to see what else was in there! I’ve only ever fished this venue for pike, so had little idea what else actually resided within… For my pike fishing, this year, I’ll be using a set of Sonik SK3 xtr 3lb test curve rods, twinned with the Tournos 10000 reel, in the hope that any hooked pike will be beaten in just a few minutes. I’m not a believer in letting pike struggle unnecessarily, I’d rather defeat them quickly, unhook them safely, then let them rest properly until recovered before release, and these rods have enough grunt to allow me to do that. Piecing the rod together, I then tied on a simple trace, added a lead on a wide run ring, a buffer bead to protect the swivel and knot, and nicked on a dead Baitbox roach, before gently swinging it out into three feet of water. When it settled on the lake bed, it was just a case of slowly tightening the line, popping it into the indicator head, releasing the bail arm, and switching the alarm on… and waiting! My quivertip rod was tooled up with a 1oz tip, a cage feeder was slipped up the line, and a size 16 hook to nylon attached; simplicity at its best. Loaded with groundbait, (you really should try the Spotted Fin stuff by the way) and a few tiny pellets, I put a trio of casters on the hook, and lobbed it out into open water. Over the top, a couple of small balls of groundbait to kick start things, and a pouch of gentiles, then I settled in to see what happened. The weather was glorious, not the bitterly cold autumnal morning I’d hoped for, and as I peeled the layers off down to a tee -shirt, I noted the tip start to tremble, then whizz around before springing back to its original position! Such a superfast bite indicated that small roach were perhaps the culprits, so prior to the next cast, I added a couple of plump, white maggots hoping to start building a net of shimmery silver fellows. Again, an extremely fast, unhittable bite resulted, and again, I missed it. Me 0, roach 2… This continued for about thirty minutes, I changed the hook, changed the distance between the bait and the feeder, but still couldn’t hit them, and then finally, I connected with one, and was disappointed to retrieve a roach of less than an ounce; no wonder I was having problems! After it became apparent that tiny roach and rudd were hitting the baits, I scaled back up to a size 14 hook, loaded it with casters, and buried it in a small method feeder, in the hope that bigger fish would see the commotion, and bully the tiddlers out. That worked almost instantly, and the resulting take saw me get snapped within seconds as a big carp smashed the hook link. Stepping things up, I retied the rig with a 5lb hook link, and put it back out,

and again, a carp was first to the bait, a chunky fish of about 5lb, which stirred things up for a while. As I slipped the fish back, I heard the first tentative bleep emit from the alarm as my drop off indicator rose an inch, then fell to the floor. This has to be my favourite moment when fishing, I much prefer the anticipation of connecting with a pike to the screaming run of the carp, and the next few seconds is always man against fish as you try to work out what the other side is doing! I watched the line peel off the spool for a second or two, pinched it between forefinger and thumb, then when it went tight, swiftly lifted the rod to set the semi-barbed trebles; fish on! Just below the surface, I watched the lean shadow of the pike kite across to my left, then slowly move towards me under increasing pressure from my kit. All was well, until it espied the net, at which point it went daft, tail walking and splashing about trying to shed the hooks, but to no avail! The fight was soon won, and a scraper double (if I’m very lucky!) was safely netted. I slipped my hand under the jaw, easily pried out the single, engaged treble, and quickly photographed the fish before it was returned to the net to rest. After a couple of minutes, during which time I took the opportunity to admire such a fine fish, whose handsome green and yellow mottled flanks offer the perfect ambush camouflage, and a rear end full of power provide the speed and impact to engulf prey in pin sharp teeth, I couldn’t help but be grateful for the chance to be up close with such a special creature. They really are a masterpiece of piscine engineering, and if you haven’t caught one yet, find out how to do it… safely! My prize was ready to go, and supporting the tail, my pike swam off strongly…result! I gave the trebles a quick sharpen, put on another bait, and gently laid this one in the margins to my right, then returned to the feeder rod. The Spotted Fin Carp Super Blend is one of the best groundbaits I’ve used this year, mainly due to its versatility. I can use it in pva sticks, ball it in, pack it into a cage feeder, or squeeze it into a method mould, and I don’t have to muck about with it; get it right first time, and it will stay moist and malleable for hours… perfect stuff. More casters went on the hook, and the feeder splashed back into place. I was hoping for a bream or two, having heard good reports, and so it proved when the ‘tip slowly pulled around, a bream of over 3lb on the end, and as bream do, it easily surrendered. The next few casts saw the same end, a bream of roughly the same size, but I was having to wait increasingly long intervals for bites which seemed strange. Every forty minutes, another bream tripped up, until I’d landed over a dozen, and another small carp also joined the fray, but it was getting close to going home, and I wanted another pike! I reeled in and changed the bait, taking off the roach, and pierced a dripping, bloody, joey mackerel onto the barbs, before gently depositing it back near the facing island. I tightened the line, set the indicator, and moved back to the leger rod. Within a couple of minutes, a bleep alerted me to interest in the deadbait. Again, I watched mesmerised as the pike caused the drop off to lift, then drop, almost imperceptibly as it mouthed the bait, before the indicator fell a few inches and then stopped… motionless! Despite a fearsome reputation, pike can

be the gentlest of creatures when it comes to picking up baits, and I suspected that it may still be there. I could see the line moving, a few inches forward, then back, so I pinched the line to see if I could feel the fish… I could, it was still there! Seconds later, the line moved left, out into open water, as the alarm lit up, and the indicator pulled towards the rod; I quickly closed the bail arm, wound down towards the pike, and lifted the rod… A brief second of resistance, then the bait fell limply towards me and the fish was gone…I’d pulled the bait out of its jaws! The now headless mackerel bore plenty of teeth marks, the fish had really had made a real inspection of the bait before deciding to go, but it also proved to be the last action of the day as it was time to leave. This particular venue does have its fair share of very small pike, which can prove to be a nuisance by picking up baits and instantly releasing them as they are too big, but I was happy with the fish I’d landed, it was enough to start my campaign on a high note. I’d also established that good quality bream could be caught, and that the carp warranted further investigation too, but that baits needed to be big to avoid the miniscule roach that descended quickly onto any offerings; all in all, an enlightening visit, with much to ponder before the next trip! I’ll be back again soon, hoping for a bigger pike… I’ll keep you informed!

The move into October means only one thing in the County Senior League – the start of the League Cup. There were 13 first round ties on Saturday, plus a handful of league fixtures. Premier Division Although eyes were mainly on the League Cup, we did have an early season top of the table clash in the Premier Division on Saturday, with second placed Grimethorpe Sports hosting league leaders AFC Penistone Church Reserves at Sheerien Park. The game ended 1-1, so standings remain as they were, with Penistone holding a point advantage. Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves moved into third place in the table, following their 4-0 win over Houghton Main at Middlecliffe Lane. The win makes it three straight victories for Stocksbridge. Division One AFC Dronfield beat Silkstone United 6-1 at Gosforth Playing Fields to move into third place in the table. It is three wins out of four games for Dronfield. Stocksbridge Park Steels Development claimed their first win of the season, with a 2-1 away win against Hepworth United. The game was a reply of last season’s Division Two Play-off final, which was also won by Stocksbridge. Division Two James Tucker scored four times, including a hattrick in the first 20 minutes to inspire Sheffield Bankers Reserves to an impressive 6-1 away win over South Kirkby Colliery Reserves. The three points take the Bankers joint top, only in second on goal difference. Goals from substitutes Andre Redhead and Ryan Witney were not enough to give Caribbean Sports Reserves all three points on Saturday, as they were held to a 3-3 draw at home by Swinton Athletic Reserves. League Cup 1st Round The ever reliable goal-scoring partnership of Justin Greenwood and Mark Clare was on show for Swinton Athletic. Both scored hat-tricks as Swinton beat last years’ finalists Brinsworth Whitehill of Division One 10-0 at Mexborough Athletic Ground. Thurcroft Miners Institute may sit at the foot of the Division Two table, but in typical cup fashion they provided the shock of the round, as they beat Millmoor Juniors of the Premier Division 4-2 at the Thurcroft Hub. Jubilee Sports followed up last weeks’ six goals, with seven this week, as they beat South Kirkby Colliery 7-0 at Chaucer School. The 2015/16 winners were once helped again by goals from Kane Doughty (2) and Jordan Livett (3). Ainsley Finney scored six times for Denaby United, as they beat North Gawber Colliery Reserves at Woolley Miners Welfare. Ashley Cantrill, Sam Hutton, and substitutes Matthew Ager, Chris Haines and Aidan Oakley were also on target for Denaby. Goals from Joe Denby, Michael Vella, Joseph Moorhouse, Andy Varns (2) and Jake Varns, plus an own goal gave High Green Villa a 7-3 home win over New Bohemians. Both Jack Hollis-Smith and Billy Hilbert were on target for Handsworth Parramore Reserves, as they beat Caribbean Sports 2-0 at Oliver’s Mount. Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 of Division One narrowly avoided an upset against Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Development, with a 2-1 away win. Ryan Keeney and Lewis Twibell were both on target for Ecclesfield. Despite being down to ten men, goals from Ashley Brook and Jamie Austin gave Maltby Main Reserves a 2-1 win over AFC Dronfield Reserves at Muglet Lane. Wickersley of Division One were 4-1 winners at Wickersley School against Division Two leaders Boynton Sports. Three time League Cup winners Frecheville booked their place in the second road with a 2-0 away win over Denaby Main. Wombwell Main also have three League cups on their honours list, and they also advanced, as they beat Working Wonders 4-1 away from home. The all Premier Division tie between Oughtibridge WMFC and North Gawber Colliery at Oughtibridge War Memorial Ground ended 4-2 in the home sides favour. Burngreave FC booked their place in the second round draw, after a 4-0 away win over Wombwell Main Development. Burngreave have won all three of their away games in all competitions without conceding a goal, despite being winless at home.

FERGUSON HAILS PLAYERS’ BELIEF Darren Ferguson hailed the team spirit among the Rovers players after putting Southend United to the sword. Ben Whiteman’s hat-trick saw Ferguson’s come from behind to win 4-1 against the Shrimpers, halting a run of two games without victory. The manager said: “It just shows the belief we

have in each other I think most people would agree we have been unlucky with some of the results this season, but we have stuck together. “Credit to my players, they had to show real character and belief after going 1-0 down - our reaction was good. At half-time I said this was a chance to show our belief in each other, and they came out so aggressively and with real quality.” Whiteman caught the eye with his second-half hat-trick, with all three goals coming inside 10 minutes, and Ferguson was impressed with his side’s start to the second period. He added: “The big difference is we were more clinical in the final third, and blew them away in a 10 minute spell for what ended up as a comfortable victory. It was a good day, but it has been coming. “Ben Whiteman was outstanding, he has that ability in him. He has played a lot of games and done very well for us - it was a really composed penalty for the third too.” Get your tickets for upcoming Rovers games now by calling 01302 762576 or going to tickets.clubdoncaster.co.uk.

WHITEMAN: THAT WAS MY BEST EVER GOAL Ben Whiteman felt Rovers fans who saw his hat-trick against Southend witnessed the best goal he has ever scored. The midfielder struck three times inside the opening 10 minutes of the second period, with the second a sweetly-struck half-volley which

clipped the underside of the bar. Whiteman said: “It’s probably the best goal I’ve ever scored, I’ve not scored that many good goals. “In the very first game I hit one off the bar and had one cleared off the line, luckily it fell to me nicely and I’ve tucked it away.” Whiteman is on loan from Sky Bet Championship side Sheffield United until January, and would be keen to remain at the Keepmoat Stadium until the summer. He added: “The main thing for me is to keep playing games and getting experience, I’d definitely like to stay. “I like it here, the boys are different class - the gaffer, coaching staff, and everyone who works here have been unbelievable with me.” Get your tickets for upcoming Rovers games now by calling 01302 762576 or going to tickets.clubdoncaster.co.uk.

U18s EXTEND UNBEATEN RUN United’s U18s extended their unbeaten run to five games with a deserved home victory on Saturday. An Oliver Greaves strike followed by own goal was enough for the Blades to secure all three points against Forest at the SteelPhalt Academy, despite playing the last half hour with ten-men. The opening half an hour was a cagey affair with the only opportunities being a couple of speculative attempts from distance by the visitors. However, it would be United who broke

the deadlock in the 33rd minute, a long throw from Cantrill wasn’t dealt with and GREAVES was there to guide the ball home first time on the half volley to put the Blades in front at the break. Shortly after the restart, the Blades doubled the advantage in fortuitous fashion, a routine back pass was misjudged by the Forest goalkeeper and the ball rolled under his foot and into the net. Just before the hour though, Portman was dismissed for a second bookable offence following a tackle that also injured team-mate

and half-time substitute Mason. As the clock ticked down, Warhurst was called into action on a couple of occasions to deny Forest. Firstly, from close range with a brilliant reflex save, then by pushing a free kick round the post to see the Blades home despite their numerical disadvantage. Blades: Warhurst, Portman, Cantrill, Cutts, Ferguson, Belehouan (Mason 45, Kelly 57), Hawkes, Broadbent, Greaves, Ompreon (McClellen 62), Potts.

LADIES THROUGH AFTER ROLLERCOASTER DERBY

For only the third time ever, United Ladies were granted use of Bramall Lane on Sunday for the SSE Women’s FA Cup preliminary round tie with Leeds United Ladies. Those many fans who supported the game not only set a new ladies attendance record of 546 but witnessed a real rollercoaster of game that went down to penalty kicks to settle the tie. Beyond the game itself it was proud day for United Girls and Ladies as the juniors provided many of their players as flag wavers, mascots and ball girls in a great show of unity within the United family. United made two changes to their starting XI that dominated against Leicester City Ladies recalling Jodie Hartley to centre midfield and Evie Robinson to a back three. In the squad were two former Leeds United players, Hartley and, on the bench, Molly Cawthorn. Leeds went into the game in eighth place in the parallel Premier League - North and included a former Blade

Jemma White in their midfield. This was the first competitive meeting between the two clubs, though Leeds had beaten United 7-0 previously in a pre-season friendly. The first half was fairly cagey and even. Tania Marsden warmed the Leeds ‘keepers hands early on and later Millie Kenyon hit one of her left-foot volleys onto the roof of the net. At the other end Leeds forward Carey Huegett hit the sidenetting and would provide a threat all match. United also had a scare when a short clearance was hit straight back goalwards only for United ‘keeper Houldsworth to recover and at a corner Leeds hit United’s crossbar. The latter minutes saw United press with their own series of corners and had their best chance when Marsden’s fierce shot was well saved by Laryn Coleman. The Bladettes stepped things up straight from the restart and the game really came to life. A short backpass put Marsden in with a sight of goal but her chip went just wide. Kim Brown

had a shot across the face and Marsden again straight at the Leeds keeper as the pressure began to mount. The breakthrough came on 51 minutes when leftmidfielder Millie Kenyon broke into the box and drilled a fine low shot off the far post to put United ahead. United could have gone further ahead as Marsden got on the end of a Sophie Bell cross but couldn’t keep the ball down and then Brown was on the end of a deep cross but headed just wide. Leeds came back into game after this spell of United pressure and at one point the referee signaled for a penalty before realising his assistant had already flagged for offside. Leeds did, though, score when Huegett’s free-kick from wide was slightly deflected past Houldsworth inside her near post to equalise. Lifted by this, Leeds pressed on and a shot by Arianne Pharnham was deflected off a United boot to skim the bar. Another close call was a drilled cross by Huegett that United’s Nat Frog-

gatt got a foot to to deny a great goalscoring opportunity. Froggatt was outstanding all game in the heart of the defence and showed the form that earned her the United Player of the Month award for September. United came back into the ascendancy next and should have gone back ahead when a cross from the right set up Marsden with Kenyon alongside at the far post only for Marsden’s header to hit a post and the rebound bounce back onto her head again but somehow wide, the United forward ending up in the back of net but in disbelief the ball wasn’t there with her. However on 77 minutes Nat Shaw got on the end of a pass to finish neatly to put United 2-1 ahead, a goal she described afterwards as ‘a dream come true’ and her 11th of the season. It could have been more too as Shaw hit another one over and then a golden chance to finish the game with a one-on-one only for Coleman to make the save. With five minutes left and United beginning

to think their hard work had been enough, Leeds sneaked a goal out of nothing when ‘keeper Houldsworth lost her grip on a cross and Liuli Dyson tapped in the equaliser. Sophie Bell’s shot into the ‘keepers arms was the last kick of normal time and we were to have extra time. United Manager Dan O’Hearne motivated his players to dig deep through the fatigue and indeed went ahead for the third time when Marsden bravely got her head on a cross to make it 3-2, though, sustaining a bang on the head in the process. Shaw almost made it four but her ‘goal’ was correctly ruled offside. Leeds were still fighting and Huegett deflected a cross just wide and at the end of the first period she scored the visiting side’s third equaliser in a scramble at a corner kick. For the last 15 minutes United replaced both their forwards and sent on Jen Pearson and Eve Marshall. There were few chances by either side and the game finished 3-3 after 120

minutes of entertaining football. For the first time in United’s history a cup tie was now at a penalty shootout situation. Jorden Spurr went first and scored which Huegett equalised. Both second kicks were missed, Brown’s saved and White for Leeds hit the crossbar. Sophie Bell put United 2-1 but Leeds next kick equalised yet again. 16-year old Eve Marshall bravely stepped up to take the fourth kick but her good shot was well saved and United held their collective breath as Dyson stepped up only for Houldsworth to tip her spot kick over to keep it 2-2. Jen Pearson then calmly made it 3-2 and Leeds missed their last kick to finally settle the game. United celebrated partially in relief after Leeds had doggedly pushed them all the way. Blades: Houldsworth, Froggatt, Neary, Robinson, Bell, Spurr, Hartley, Brown, Kenyon (Cawthorn), Marsden (Marshall), Shaw (Pearson).

HE’S BEEN FANTASTIC - LEES INTERNATIONAL ROUND-UP Owls vice captain Tom Lees has lavished praise on team mate Gary Hooper. With seven league goals to his tally, Hooper is currently the joint leading Championship goalscorer. The former Celtic man has an incredible haul of seven goals from seven games but Lees says Hooper brings much more than this to the table. “He is playing fantastically,” Lees explained. “It’s not just the goals, he always wants the ball and

you know he’ll look after it when he’s in possession. “Quite often when strikers are scoring all these goals, they won’t be contributing too much else but they’ll be winning the

games for you. “But with Hooper, he is contributing throughout the 90 minutes as well as chipping in with the goals so it’s fantastic. “Hopefully that can continue.”

It was heartache for Scotland on Sunday evening as their World Cup qualification hopes were dashed in Slovenia. With Owls duo Barry Bannan and Steven Fletcher in the squad, the Scot’s run-in has seen unbelievable highs but in the end, it was frustration and despair for Gordon Strachan’s side. Victories over Lithuania and Malta left Scotland needing two wins from their last two group games to qualify for the play-offs. Owls midfielder

Bannan was named in the starting line-up last week as the Scot’s edged past Slovakia in dramatic fashion, with a last minute own goal keeping their World Cup hopes alive. Strachan made two changes to the line-up from victory over Slovakia with Chris Martin and James McArthur making the cut, as Bannan maintained his starting shirt. And the night began in the perfect way for Scotland as Leigh Griffiths notched the first goal of the game – and the first goal Slovenia had conceded at home throughout their qualifying campaign. A double from Roman Bezjak left Scotland’s hopes hanging by a thread, with the fixture a must-win game given the score in Slovenia’s clash with Malta. Owls striker Fletcher came on from the bench for the final ten minutes as a grandstand finish unfolded.

Robert Snodgrass bagged the equaliser, Bostjan Cesar was then sent off for the home side but it was not to be for the Scots, who finished third in Group F on goal difference. Elsewhere, Kosovo suffered defeat in their penultimate Group I qualification game, losing 2-0 at home to Ukraine. Owls striker Atdhe Nuhiu came on from the bench after 70 minutes and will be in the squad this evening as Kosovo face group leaders Iceland. In the reverse fixture back in March 2017, Nuhiu bagged his first international goal in his country’s 2-1 defeat to Iceland at Loro Borici in Shkodër George Hirst started for the England Under-19s in their 1-0 defeat away at Czech Republic on Friday. A second half goal from Lukáš Pfeifer handed the Czechs the win in Znojmo. The Under-19s face Slovakia today (5.00pm) in Senec.
