bands, percussion, bells, lots of boats and kayaks, and pyrotechnics! It is going to be a spectacular affair! Celebrated composer, Ansuman Biswas will conduct the performance which will include local canal boats, kayaks from Manvers Boat Club, Rotherham African Drummers, Juxtavoices, Sheffield Samba Band, Unbeatable Energy, Rotherham

Music Service, Rotherham Town band and some very spectacular pyrotechnics! Steve Rogers, Artistic Director of Open Minds Theatre Company said, “The River Don running through the centre of the town is a much ignored resource. It is going to be difficult to ignore it on 21st October!” Rotherham Council’s Cabinet

Member for Jobs and the Local Economy, Cllr Denise Lelliott, said: “This brand new event has been organised by Open Minds Theatre Company, who have worked with other partners to bring this exciting development to the River Don for the first time. “We encourage everyone to come along and enjoy this spectacular show. Visitors will experience Rotherham’s waterway in a completely different way when it is transformed for this wonderful production,

celebrating our industrial heritage and steel-making past.” The performance will be visible from public areas such as the car park and bridge and those areas will be free though access to the towpath in the area will be subject to a small charge and will have restricted access. The event is supported by the Arts Council, Rotherham Council, Unite, Rotherham Trades Council, Canal River Trust and Sean Rourke.

OLYMPIC LEGACY PARK DEVELOPMENT ENTERS FINAL LAP Councillors have given the green light for a grandstand finish at the Olympic Legacy Park with a promise: “the best is yet to come”. Sheffield City Council, working closely with the Rt Hon Richard Caborn, has already spearheaded a new Academy, UTC, artificial 3G floodlit pitch and an impressive community park complete with run route, with Sheffield Eagles now confirmed to be returning to the city after four years. It has also helped secure a new £14m Advanced Wellness Research

Centre for Sheffield Hallam University. Now, the council’s partners on the project, Legacy Park Limited, will continue to develop a vision for the Park. They are in discussions with Sheffield Hallam over a key role in developing the site including plans for a Health Innovation Campus (HIC). This will be a collaborative project bringing together in partnership the educational, recreational and research organisations with local residents, community organisations and city council to work together

to apply research findings and technology innovations to improve health. Sheffield City Council’s Cabinet last week endorsed the final stage in the Olympic Legacy Park journey, with significant development having already taken place on the site since 2013. The Olympic Legacy Park is opened on the site of the old Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield by former sports minister Richard Caborn Today’s endorsement will also see negotiations continue

for a sports stadium to be built around the new artificial pitch which will provide an outdoor sports facility for the UTC, Oasis Academy, Sheffield Eagles, Sheffield United Women’s Football and youth teams to play

at the OLP, alongside community use. Negotiations are also at an advanced stage for an indoor sports arena which could provide a permanent venue for the Sheffield Sharks professional basketball team, pupils at the Don Valley Academy and community groups, which would be selffunded in construction costs and on-going running costs.

ALBERT SNODGRASS

My mate is going to a fancy dress party tonight as Bob Marley and he’s asked me to do his hair. I’m dreading it. A Mexican magician tells the audience he will disappear on the count of 3. He says, “uno, dos...” Poof ... He disappears without a tres. I’ve just written a book about basements. My publisher reckons it could be a best cellar! Some guy stopped me in the street and asked “Why are you carrying a 9ft book?” I replied... “It’s a long story.” My grandad races pigeons. I don’t know why - he never beats them. My mate and I are having a competition to see who can steal the most dog related stuff from our local pet shop. I’ve just taken the lead!

This girl came up to me today and said she recognised me from Vegetarian Club. I was confused, I’d never met herbivore.

My grandfather was a baker for the army.. When he went to war, he went in all buns glazing.

To be in the draw, simply answer the following question:

I went to the zoo yesterday and saw a baguette in a cage. The zoo keeper told me it was bread in captivity. Be careful it’s windy out there! Only went out to get the Mrs some bread and I got blown into the pub.

Good Luck!

Stoptober – an annual initiative from the NHS that aims to encourage and motivate people to quit smoking for 28 consecutive days in October. Tobacco kills up to half of its users in their lifetime – worldwide, smoking kills around 6 million people each year and has been linked to cancer, lung disease, heart attack, stroke and coronary heart disease. The nicotine in cigarettes is highly addictive and many people find it difficult to stop smoking once they’ve started. According to the NHS, 70% of smokers say they would like to quit, yet still smoke anyway. While difficult, the effort to quit smoking doesn’t need to be impossible, and once you do quit, you start to notice positive changes almost instantly. Within 24 hours your blood pressure and pulse rate return to normal. Quit for a few days and you’ll notice an improved sense of taste and smell. The Department of Work and Pensions is urging older people to claim Pension Credit to top up their retirement income. Caroline Abrahams, Charity Director at Age UK, said: “It’s extremely worrying that there has been no progress in the benefit take up figures despite the number of UK pensioners in poverty now standing at 1.9 million. More than £3.3 billion in Pension Credit remains unclaimed by older people every year despite so many pensioners struggling financially. These are benefits designed to help people on a low income and could make a real difference to their lives if claimed. Official figures released recently show that four in ten pensioners could be missing out, with more than £3.3 billion going unclaimed – an average annual amount of £2,000 for each entitled family who do not claim. “We are clearly far from ‘job done’ when it comes to ensuring that everyone has a decent income in retirement and a concerted effort to help the most

vulnerable is urgently needed. Many of those missing out simply aren’t aware they could be entitled to extra support; others are aware of the benefits but feel too embarrassed or proud to put in a claim; and some have previously put in an unsuccessful claim or have been put off by the claiming process which they feel is too complicated or intrusive. “Age UK advisers are on hand to help and we would urge any older person who is worried about money to get in touch with us by calling our national advice line free of charge on 0800 169 6565, contacting a local Age UK or visit our website www. ageuk.org.uk.” For more information on Pension Credit, visit https://www.gov.uk/pension-credit where a Pension Credit calculator can establish if you’re eligible and how much you could get. To make a claim, call 0800 991234 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm). Visit www.gov.uk/check-state-pension to find out what you could receive, and the earliest you can claim it.

GUIDE Please send your Views, News and Reviews to info@mercurynewspaper.co.uk / What’s On, 4b Queens Road, Sheffield S2 4DG / Tel: 0114 276 3701 Sheffield’s leading training and skills academy has scored a hat-trick of wins at the National Apprenticeship Awards. Jessica Heppleston, a 17-year-old trained by The Source Skills Academy, has won the national Retail Week Apprentice of the Year 2017 title. There were victories too for The Source’s apprenticeship programme partners Team Knowhow, at the Rising Star Awards at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel. The national contact centre for Dixons Carphone, off Sheffield’s Parkway, employs 1,300 and has been providing its apprenticeship scheme through The Source for the last five years. It won Employer Initiative of The Year for its successful apprenticeship programme, which now takes on 70 apprentices a year, one of the biggest intakes in Yorkshire and the Humber. It has seen the retention rate of its apprentices improve significantly year on year. “Our training programme is innovative and caring and, thanks to The Source going above and beyond to give us a totally bespoke training service, it helps to create great colleagues,” said the company’s learning and development manager Matt Sadler, who was named top HR Team Individual on the night. “It includes open evenings for parents of young apprentices starting work with us, incentivising Apprentice of the Month contests and ongoing training for our managers in the pastoral care many young apprentices need in addition to their job training.” The company was nominated for both awards by The Source. Said Dianne Wainwright, Head of Operations at The Source: “We work hand in hand with Team Knowhow to create a strong and enthusiastic injection of fresh talent into their business each year. “We have seen these young apprentices thrive at Knowhow. The company’s encouragement and

nurturing of them is second to none and we have been equally impressed by the innovative ideas they employ. We were delighted to see them victorious on the night.” Jessica Heppleston’s win came after she impressed judges with her maturity, passion and a sales performance already exceeding those of longerserving staff at electrical wholesaler Jack Hinton’s of Wakefield. She beat finalists from top UK retail brands and hopes one day to become a branch manager. Jess’s apprenticeship was made possible by the Electrical Distributors’ Association’s Education and Training Programme, and her training was managed by The Source. Jess left Horbury Academy at 16 with 9 good GCSEs and 2B-Tecs determined to go into a trades apprenticeship. She said: “Lots of people tried to persuade me to stay on at school, or go into a job that wasn’t in a male dominated environment - including my dad, who own a building company. But I love my work, I learn as I earn and I’m working towards further qualifications that will give me a great career, thanks to the support and encouragement I get from The Source. “I’d encourage any girl to take up an apprenticeship in this industry.” Stephen Mooney, her branch manager at Jack Hinton’s which is a member of the national wholesaler Edmundson Electrical, commented: “I have never met an apprentice like Jessica. When she arrived for her interview we knew she was something special. “She was only 16, but was full of confidence. We felt her intelligence and skillset was perfect for our

MERCURY M T RS LIFE SENTENCES ON OFFER FOR DANGEROUS DRIVERS

Life sentences are to become a punishment for dangerous drivers who cause death as a result of speeding or using their phone behind the wheel. Under new Government legislation, killer drivers could also be handed the maximum prison sentence for causing death by careless driving while under the influence of drink or drugs. The road safety charity Brake says the changes signal a “major victory for the families of victims” of reckless driving. The move to increase the top punishment to a lifetime behind bars chimes with the opinions of thousands of people in a public consultation, after plans to pass down harsher penalties were announced in December 2016. Life sentences can be applied to any driver who causes death by speeding, street racing or while on a mobile phone under the new guidance. The Government will also introduce a new offence of causing serious injury through careless driving. Since the penalties for being caught using a hand-held device were doubled back in March – to £200 and six penalty points – the RAC has

been urging all drivers to take the pledge to Be Phone Smart, and keep their potentially fatal distractions well out of reach. Justice Minister Dominic Raab said: “Based on the seriousness of the worst cases, the anguish of the victims' families, and maximum penalties for other serious offences such as manslaughter, we intend to introduce life sentences of imprisonment for those who wreck lives by driving dangerously, drunk or high on drugs.” Jason Wakeford, director of campaigns for road safety charity Brake, said: “We applaud the Government for at last recognising that the statute books have been weighed against thousands of families who have had their lives torn apart through the actions of drivers who have flagrantly broken the law.” Last year 157 people were sentenced for causing death by dangerous driving and 32 were convicted of causing death by careless driving while under the influence, the Ministry of Justice said.

I visited a Stoke-on-Trent Angling Society water, to wait… I’d picked up my book, poured the first mug of Rudyard Lake, to meet a club official to pick up tea, and had just selected a page, when the first an add-on to my existing ticket to allow me to bleep emitted from the receiver. trebles quickly removed, and the fish, a fit low double, left in the water in my net to recover. I wanted a picture of this one, beautifully marked, with gorgeous red tinged paddles, and dark mottled back, my second ‘double’ in consecutive sessions, so after a minute to settle in the water, and I was sure it was well, it was swiftly held aloft for a few seconds (the camera was ready to go) snapped, and placed gently back in the net to fully recuperate, before the walls of the net were dropped, and the fish was released back to the depths… safe and sound… Finally, if you are fishing for pike, please be properly prepared. These fearsome looking predators are amongst the most delicate of fish, and deserve to be treated with respect. You will need at least one pair (I take two of each, just in case) of long forceps, long nosed pliers, and side cutters, along with an unhooking mat, and an adequate net. If you are unsure, then do your research, or better still, go with someone who can show you the ropes; it is much better to learn proper procedures and unhooking techniques, rather than put you, or more importantly, the fish at risk by poor (or no) preparation, or a lack of essential kit. Don’t be the one that leaves a set of trebles in a fine pike because you can’t get them out… treat them right!

Manager Darren Ferguson is expecting a reaction from his players after seeing his side go down 1-0 away at Charlton Athletic. Tariqe Fosu’s ninth-minute goal at The Valley was all that the Addicks’ needed to claim all three points, despite constant pressure from Rovers in the second half. “It’s an unacceptable result, the first half was nowhere near the required standard and we’ve lost a poor goal which has cost us the game,” Ferguson said. “I won’t criticise individual players but it’s a clear mistake by someone, it’s a poor goal to concede we’ve been too slow and the tempo wasn’t there and we weren’t quick enough. They have to take responsibility themselves, but as the manager, I have to as well, but there’s only so much I can do.” Ferguson was also left to rue missed opportunities, with Rovers having plenty of chances to get back in to the game, but Karl Robinson’s men did enough to cling onto all three points. “If we played in the first half like we did in the second, we win the game, but we’ve been careless and there were too many mistakes,” Ferguson said. “The reaction after half time was good but the early goal has meant that they’re hanging on, they’ve been restricted to opportunities to counter attack because of us chasing the game, but the results just aren’t going our way. Alfie’s hit the bar in the first and Tommy should score in the second half, it’s frustrating because there were parts where it was good, but we need to kick on because clearly it’s a big week coming up and we need a result on Tuesday night.”

Goalkeeper Ian Lawlor was pleased with the way the side reacted in the second half of Rovers’ 1-0 defeat to Charlton Athletic in Sky Bet League One. Lawlor says Rovers need to be more aggressive in the opening periods of the game. “We saw a better reaction in the second half, we got the ball down and created a lot of opportunities for ourselves and Charlton struggled to get out of their half in a few spells,” said Lawlor. “I am disappointed with the result, we did not start the way we wanted to which was aggressive, and it was a sloppy start from us overall. We just need to dust ourselves down and go again on Tuesday, I made a couple of saves in the second half, but it means nothing when you do not get the three points at the end of the game.” Darren Ferguson’s side return to league action on Tuesday night against Portsmouth at the Keepmoat Stadium, and Lawlor says Rovers have enough quality in the team to get a result. “After a defeat it is better to get another game straight after so we are not waiting another week to put the result right, we will have a recovery session on Monday and then go again Tuesday,” said Lawlor. “Losing such as key player early on like Coppinger is a blow, losing someone like him does affect the team but I think Rodney Kongolo did really well when he came on. We have a quality squad, due to injuries and suspensions we will have to rotate on Tuesday night, we are all moving in the right direction and we have to pull together and get a result.”

ROVERS SLIP UP IN CAPITAL ANGRY FERGIE TIME TO REACT Rovers were beaten at Charlton Athletic after failing to turn possession into an equalising goal. Tariqe Fosu’s early strike made the difference, with the Addicks man striking after collecting the ball from Jay Dasilva. Rovers were unchanged from the previous Saturday’s win over Southend United, with Rodney Kongolo and Marko Marosi returning to the bench after international duty and injury respectively. The game started in patchwork manner, with a lot of stoppages. John Marquis required treatment after a cut to his forehead, and James Coppinger had to come off after just seven minutes due to a calf injury. Kongolo came on in his place, taking up a position on the right of midfield with Ben Whiteman pushed to the tip of the diamond to fulfil the role vacated by the departed Rovers captain. It got worse two minutes later when the Addicks scored the only goal of the game, with Fosu striking with a powerful shot at the neat post. Rovers patiently played themselves back into the game, enjoying plenty of possession though neither keeper were under real pressure until the 25th minute when Alfie May was left with too much space on the edge of the area and clipped the ball off the top off the bar with a dipping effort. Lawlor kept the score at 1-0 as he palmed away Ricky Holmes’ freekick, then kept out Josh Magennis’ header. Home keeper Danny Amos had to be alert to keep out a Tommy Rowe header, then a low Harry Toffolo free-kick. The home side were the last to threaten in the opening period, with Lawlor denying Holmes before

goalscorer Fosu was booked for simulation in the follow-up. There were no changes at the interval, and the start to the second half was held up in bizarre fashion. Rowe took the kick-off for Rovers, but as the ball was being played upfield Magennis clattered into referee Robert Lewis - the collision was entirely accidental, but the forward took out the official with a shoulder to the face. Lewis was knocked out cold by the incident, though he was able to walk off after a delay of around seven minutes. Fourth official Craig Hicks had to step in and, with 52 minutes on the clock, Rowe kicked off the second period again. Rovers created plenty of chances, with John Marquis firing a half-volley over after Toffolo’s delivery from the left. As the game became stretched, only a combination of determined defending - Lawlor pulled off a great save, while Joe Wright headed an effort onto the bar - and the woodwork kept Billy Clarke and Magennis out from a goalmouth scramble just after the hour mark. Rovers were forced into a change for the second time in the match shortly afterwards, with Alfie May coming off due to injury an Liam Mandeville coming on in his place. Lawlor got down well again to keep out a deflected Fosu shot which came off Wright, doing the same to palm away a Magennis shot and an Ahmed Kashi effort. Rovers created the best of the final chances, with Chris Solly getting up well to force Rowe’s good header from the left behind for a corner.

BLADES THREATEN TOP SPOT The Blades remain among the division’s frontrunners after another home victory. Chris Basham scored the all-important goal early in the second half, heading home a John Fleck cross. Sharp returned to the starting XI and captained the Blades. Clarke and Freeman also started. Coutts missed out, suspended after accumulating five cautions, whilst Baldock picked up an injury in the previous game and Donaldson dropped to the bench. Hanson was fit again and amongst the substitutes, as were Lafferty and Brooks after international duty. It appeared that the visitors had matched

United in formation in the opening exchanges and chances were sparse. The preferred route for the Blades was down the left in the first 15 minutes, with Stevens and O’Connell heavily involved. O’Connell almost attached himself to Basham’s deflected cross, which paved the way for a succession of corners but despite the Blades getting on top, Bialkowski remained untested. Ipswich changed their formation midway through the half and their first opportunities came just after the 30-minute mark. Blackman was forced to push away Waghorn’s half-volley after Carter-Vickers failed to clear and

CLARKE RISES TO THE CHALLENGE WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH Leon Clarke finished last season in blistering form, his goals were vital in getting the Blades to the 100-point mark. His partnership with Billy Sharp frustrated punters in the stands at times but the connection eventually occurred during the run-in. The question then turned to whether the striker could replicate his hot streak in the second tier. Age is not on ‘Big Leon’s’ side, at 32 he is one of the elder statesmen of the Blades squad. However, he is looking irreplaceable in Chris Wilder’s starting XI as of late. Two goals against United’s city neighbours helps, but his overall impact on games has been a surprise to many this season. He looks a yard quicker and has used his pace to trouble experienced Championship defences. Clarke’s performance against Ipswich Town last Saturday was arguably the best of the lot,

despite him not scoring. His ability to hold up the ball and bring others into play is a significant reason why the Blades have been successful this season. At the weekend, it was his give and go with John Fleck on the left-hand side that led to the winning goal. The former-Owl was unlucky not to score when his audacious volley had the keeper beaten but not the crossbar. A huge amount of focus this season has rightly gone to David Brooks. The youngster connected well with Clarke last Saturday and must love playing with a striker who can bring him into the game. If Clarke continues to have such an impact, then returning strikers from the treatment room will struggle to earn a place in the team.

from the resulting Ward corner, Knudsen headed over. Soon after McGoldrick poked wide follow an attack down the right but more concerning was that Freeman stayed down in the penalty area and was stretchered off after treatment. Wright was the replacement. Bialkowski was worked as half-time approached, he punched away a Duffy cross and then saved the blushes of defender Knudsen, who cut out Sharp’s low cross - the ball was heading into the goal before the ‘keeper’s intervention. United won an early corner in the second half and were quick to get on top, emphasised by the opening goal on 49 minutes. Clarke

found Fleck’s run down the left and from the midfielder’s cross, BASHAM arrived unopposed at the back post to head home. There was an immediate opportunity for Ipswich to level with their closest effort but from Nydam’s pass, Waghorn cut inside and curled his effort against the crossbar. The opposite crossbar was rattled six minutes later when Clarke’s half-volley struck the woodwork. Waghorn linked up with McGoldrick but shot wide and Celina, on as a substitute, saw his first touch, a header, sail over the crossbar. Brooks was introduced for the Blades, taking over from Sharp - Basham claimed the captaincy.

The first contribution of Brooks was to cut in from the left but he was unbalanced as he shot wide and then, from a Duffy cross, Clarke’s placed header was saved by Bialkowski. The next contribution from Duffy was to track back and prevent Knudsen getting in. It earned the attacking

midfielder an ovation. Ipswich became more frantic late on and three minutes of added time saw the visitors on the attack. Blackman punch away a Celina free-kick and Knudsen launched a couple of long throws but the Blades comfortably hung on for three more points.

Chris Basham rises to head in the winner against Ipswich

BOSS PLEASED BY ANOTHER HOME SUCCESS

Chris Wilder was understandably pleased after witnessing a fifth home victory of the campaign, with Ipswich Town the latest side to be beaten at the Lane. Chris Basham’s secondhalf header in front of the Kop proved decisive as the Blades produced a dominant display against Mick McCarthy’s Tractor Boys. And Wilder was impressed by what he saw, remarking: “It was a positive performance with a clean sheet and we showed a real resilience when we had to defend to keep the ball out of the net towards the end. John Lundstram came in to replace Paul Coutts who has been outstanding and it was generally a very good performance and when

you play well you need to pick up a result and we did. My team is fearless, we go for it every week and in the first-half it doesn’t surprise me to see us pushing the opposition back.” The Blades boss added: “We believe in what we’re doing and we’re not going to change. We’re pleased with where we stand and yet again we were driven over the line by excellent, passionate support from the terraces. It is an fantastic environment for the players to enjoy their football. If they make a mistake but the supporters know their honest, they will always forgive. And this is an honest group of players who go to the end regardless of the situation and I can’t

ask for anymore.” Meanwhile the Blades continue to wait for news on Kieron Freeman’s injury - the only negative to come out of Saturday’ win. The wing-back was stretchered off with a knee injury in the first half of Saturday’s Sky Bet Championship victory over Ipswich Town. Chris Wilder commented: “Kieron’s had a scan but there is

still swelling around the knee. The medical specialists will continue to assess so at the moment there is no time frame on when he will be back in action.” After the game on Saturday, the Blades boss commented: “To play for the club you have to put your body on the line and sometimes these things happen. It is disappointing for Kieron, but it highlights his commitment.”

HALF SEASON TICKETS ON SALE NOW

Sheffield United today launched details of its ‘forging the dream’ half season ticket offers. Blades fans who snap up the 12-game package will be able to claim a free ticket for the pre-Christmas fixture against Bristol City, currently in fourth, one place behind United in the Championship. Starting with the Boxing Day home fixture against Sunderland, the half season ticket includes visits from city rivals Sheffield

Wednesday, Aston Villa, Leeds United, Nottingham Forest, Neil Warnock’s Cardiff City and Middlesbrough. United are already averaging home gates of over 26,000 on the back of a promising start to their return to the Championship. So, demand for seats for the cluster of high profile games is expected to be high. Chief Operating Officer Andrew Birks said: “This is a winning half season ticket offer for our

fans who want to be sure of their seats in the second half of the campaign. The atmosphere at the Lane has been special this season with Chris Wilder taking the team into the top six. The package features games against some renowned teams as well as clubs, like the Blades, who have made promising starts to the season.” Manager Chris Wilder said: “Last season was a great success, but we are forging ahead in every aspect on and

off the field. We want our fans to be part of it.” The half season ticket offer provides savings of up to £97.00 on match by match ticket purchasing. Fans can take advantage of several other benefits including discounts in the Blades Superstore and 1,400 loyalty points. Half season tickets bought before 4th November qualify for a FREE ticket for the Blades last preChristmas game at Bramall Lane against Bristol City.

SORRY OWLS SLIP UP AS TROTTERS WIN FIRST GAME Wednesday went down by the odd goal in three to Bolton following an eventful game at the Macron Stadium on Saturday. An entertaining affair over the Pennines saw the hosts go into a 2-0 lead with strikes either side of half time from Sammy Ameobi and a Sam Hutchinson own goal. Kieran Lee pulled one back but try as they might, the Owls could not break Bolton’s resistance and the Trotters notched their maiden win of the season. Wanderers struck first blood ten minutes

in, with Ameobi on target. The big winger showed nifty footwork to create his own opening and apply a stunning finish from 25 yards. The early goal opened up the contest and both sides went close inside a minute. First, Gary Hooper found Steven Fletcher in the penalty area and the Scot forced a diving save from Ben Alnwick before Bolton broke, with a smart save from Joe Wildsmith denying Josh Vela. Vela was at the heart of the action again on the half-hour mark, this

time turning provider for David Wheater but the defender’s header sailed wide. Then eight minutes before the break, the Owls carved their best opportunity of the first half. After Alnwick saved at the feet of Lee, the loose ball fell to Reach who seemed certain to score but his well-struck shot was blocked on the line by Mark Beevers. Wednesday made a double change for the second period, with Hutchinson and Jordan Rhodes coming on from the bench. And the Owls certainly upped the

ante as Barry Bannan saw a long ranger parried round the post by Alnwick. Adam Reach teed up Rhodes at the back stick but the striker hooked just wide and Bolton hit back through Wheater, who was thwarted by Hutchinson. But things promptly turned sour for Hutchinson on 62 minutes as the former Chelsea man inadvertently deflected into his own goal from the resulting corner. The points were almost safe just after the restart when Vela

found Gary Madine in oceans of room six yards out only for the former Owls striker to hit the post with the goal at his mercy. Then, on 68 minutes, Wednesday halved the arrears. Alnwick saved well from Hooper and when Filipe Morais handled a Rhodes header, it mattered not as the advantage was played and Lee slotted home. The Trotters launched an immediate response and Wildsmith showed great athleticism to tip a Morais bullet over the crossbar. Back play went to the other

end and substitute Lucas Loao went close to equalising but Alnwick saved at the last. After Hutchinson made a superb goal line clearance from Wheater’s towering header, Wednesday dominated the closing stages and had a big shout for a penalty waved away when Lee appeared to be felled by Wheater. To compound a miserable afternoon in Lancashire, Lee was shown a yellow card for simulation and the visitors’ frustrations were complete.

CARLOS UNHAPPY Carlos Carvalhal rued his side’s fortune at the Macron Stadium as Wednesday went down 2-1 to Bolton. Wednesday were at the centre of contentious decisions, as Kieran Lee was denied a big shout for a penalty late in the game. Trailing 2-1, the Owls were pressing forward and Lee appeared to be tripped by David Wheater in the area. The referee, though, waved away the visitors’ claims and Lee was booked for simulation. Carvalhal said: “I do not like to talk about these decisions normally but this time I cannot stay quiet. I am not talking about anything other than facts, and these are facts. Against Birmingham,

we had a good goal that was ruled invalid, against Leeds we had a good goal that was ruled invalid and now today we are refused a very clear penalty. These are big decisions and they are costing us points.” On the game itself, Carvalhal added: “We had chances, they had chances and this was an open game. This was because Bolton scored early in the game as we were fighting to come back. Sam was very unlucky with the own goal and these things happen in football. But we scored the goal, we created chances and who knows after that if we get the penalty?”
