RESIDENTS TO SHAPE PUBLIC ART CELEBRATING DONCASTER’S MINING HERITAGE Doncaster residents are being asked to help shape a top quality piece of public art which celebrates the town’s proud mining heritage. Doncaster Council has commissioned acclaimed artist Laurence Edwards to devise the artwork which represents each of Doncaster’s former mining communities and what mining meant to the whole borough. It will be displayed in a prominent location in Doncaster town centre which is easily accessible to

Doncaster residents. A series of consultation events are being held in the coming weeks where people are invited to find out how Laurence plans to create the design. At the public events, Laurence will talk people through how he works and his guiding vision. To help finalise the look and feel of the piece, Laurence will choose one person to represent each of the mining communities who he will meet again to have indepth discussion about their memories and what mining

meant to them. A wax mould of each of these individuals’ faces will also be created as part of the design process, which will then be cast in bronze to create a limited edition set. The final design will be revealed in spring 2018 at a special exhibition. Ros Jones, Mayor of Doncaster, said: “This flagship piece will recognise what mining meant to communities right across the borough. It will celebrate our past but will look forward to the future by being a bold

REGIONAL EDITION

piece of art which complements our regeneration plans for Doncaster town centre helping to create a vibrant place to visit and explore. This will be great art for Doncaster for everyone to enjoy.” Laurence Edwards, said: “Miners and mining have fascinated me and the demise of coal mining in this country has been one of the defining narratives of my generation. I will be talking and working with people with experiences of mining in Doncaster, and

the general public to develop ideas in a collaborative approach.” Cllr Nigel Ball, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, said: “For decades mining was the lifeblood of many of our communities and we want to recognise that fact with a great piece of art which they can all call their own. Far from just remembering our past, the intention is to create art that captures the imagination of people and becomes another draw for people to visit

Doncaster town centre.” Dennis Nowell, a former miner from Armthorpe, said: “I was born in a mining village, my father was a miner, all my friends were miners and all my family were miners. We can’t let our heritage go; mining is why Doncaster is here and why Doncaster is what it is. Doncaster should have a statue to represent everyone throughout the borough.” Another former miner, Tosh McDonald said: “Doncaster is

built on coal and rail and both are intrinsically linked. The first trains were powered by coal and as the rail industry developed they moved coal around to where it was needed. There was a big supply industry all linked to coal and communities were built around the mines with house building, sports clubs and brass bands all coming about because of the industry. Coal made Doncaster and we should recognise its impact with a statue.” Residents are being encouraged to attend one of the consultation events taking place at: Hatfields pub, DN7 6JH on Friday 10

November from 5-6pm Armthorpe Community Centre, DN3 3AG on Friday 10 November from 7-8pm Doncaster Trades Club, Frenchgate Centre on Saturday 11 November from 10-11am Brodsworth Miners Welfare Club on Saturday 11 November from 1-2pm Denaby & Cadeby Miners Welfare Club, DN12 4AW on Saturday 11 November from 7-8pm Further detail on the plans are available at: www.doncaster. gov.uk/miningstatue

Bringing Channel 4 to Sheffield could see the broadcaster develop a National Screen Industries Institute that puts it at the heart of new and emerging digital technologies. That was the impassioned view of the Rt Hon Richard Caborn, leading the city’s bid for the broadcaster to move some of its business out of London. Speaking at a panel event in Liverpool, Mr Caborn said a new screen institute could build on the model of the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre and Olympic

The panel was Cat Lewis, CEO of Nine Lives Media and Chair of Royal Television Society North; Richard Caborn, Chair of Sheffield’s Channel 4 bid and former Minister of Sport; Stephen Chapman, TV producer and journalist for Prolific North; and Gill Wilson, Head of Features at Channel 4.

STAGE COMBAT STAR VISITS SHEFFIELD STUDENTS Taking time out from his busy TV schedule, Dan Burman, Stage Combat expert and actor, paid a visit to Razzamataz Theatre Schools Sheffield to deliver a stage fighting skills workshop to the students. Dan has worked extensively in TV, film and theatre, as a performer but also choreographing fights and coordinating stunts as well. He has worked on films such as Pirates of the Caribbean, Snow White and the Huntsman and Disney’s Cinderella, The workshop, is designed to give students an insight into stage combat both as a practical performance skill and also as a tool for academic drama study. A fight can be an integral part of the story telling process. A fight is a play in micro, and by understanding its construction, students can grasp an understanding of the play as a whole. Students were taught a range of basic techniques and how to portray stage fights effectively with correct actions and reactions. Dan taught them a slap, punch, hair pull, strangle and hook punch. “The students had an absolutely amazing time and it was nice to provide a session that differed to our normal Drama classes” says Helen Bell, Principal of Razzamataz Sheffield.“We are always looking to invite industry professionals in to share their skills and experience with our students.” “We believe it is important to encourage more

children to get into performing arts, which is shown to not only have positive effects on health and wellbeing but also on confidence and self-esteem, massively important for teenagers who are navigating a new period in their lives’ adds Helen. “These are important life skills to have and just as important to those children who don’t take their performing arts training any further than just having a bit of fun on the weekend.” Razzamataz Sheffield have lots more opportunities planned for students throughout the year, including a summer showcase performance as well as a summer school. Classes are available for children from the age of 2 through to 18.

I am in the army and my sergeant said to me, “I didn’t see you at camouflage training this morning!” To which I replied, “Oh, thank you very much, sir!” We never played violent video games when I was growing up. Just family-friendly board games with questions like, “Who murdered this guy with a pipe?” My dad got a selfie stick for his phone. He can now hold it far enough away to read text messages. I once froze some orange flavoured fizzy drink to make a lolly. Fanta stick. One thing I found out last night. Never try making spaghetti on toast after you’ve taken acid. That opens up a whole can of worms. My friend said to me today, “Do you think history really repeats itself?” I replied, “You asked me this question yesterday and my answer was no, and it’s still no.”

Age UK Sheffield unveils new city centre HQ as demand for its services continues to grow Sheffield’s leading older person’s charity hopes its city centre relocation will open an exciting new chapter for its work. Age UK Sheffield has officially opened its new operational hub in the heart of the city, having moved its team of dedicated staff and volunteers to office space at South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue’s (SYFR) headquarters on Eyre Street. Charity bosses hope the move will reignite public support for its work, which includes supporting more than 4,000 vulnerable, older people in the city every year. The unveiling of the plaque was carried out by HM Lord-Lieutenant of South Yorkshire, Andrew Coombe. Other top dignitaries, including the High Sheriff of South Yorkshire, Master Cutler and Lord Mayor of Sheffield were amongst the specially invited guests who heard more about the charity’s work, which delivered more than £2.7 million in additional benefits to local people last year. The whole city got behind the move- including Westfield Health who donated office furniture and storage equipment and solicitors HLW Keeble Hawson who provided legal support. Steve Chu, Chief Executive at Age UK Sheffield, said: “I want to say a massive thank you to all the individuals and organisations that have supported us, and continue to support us with this relocation. We’re really pleased to be here and believe the partnership between a Fire and Rescue Service and an older people’s charity is beneficial to us both. The work our staff do to support people aged fifty and over in Sheffield is high quality, highly-skilled, and much needed. Everyone tells me that the quality of our services is second to none. GPs are

amazed at the outcomes we achieve for their patients, telling us we are the most holistic service they have. We have carers who cry with joy when their loved ones with dementia come to our Wellbeing Centre, saying their lives have been transformed by our support. We are extremely grateful for all the warm words we receive on a daily basis. We know that in delivering excellent services to older people in Sheffield, we have built up a lot of support for our work and goodwill towards our charity. Our new location is a really exciting one for us, helping us to be as committed as ever to older people in Sheffield.” Age UK Sheffield supported nearly 4,000 people last year bringing in nearly £2.7m in additional benefits that weren’t being claimed. The charity also made more than 1,300 referrals to vital services, including SYFR’s Safe & Well checks, and to local community groups, from choirs to arts and crafts. It also helps to reduce demand on the NHS through taking GP referrals, helping to reduce unnecessary hospital admissions and facilitating earlier discharge from hospitals. “This is all vital work. But like most local charities, the pressure on us is growing, year on year. We still rely on donations to help older in our city to have an income, a warm roof over their head, activities to enjoy and the best health they can have to live as independently as possible,” Steve added. To donate to Age UK Sheffield, visit Age UK Sheffield or phone 0114 250 2850.

tickets and find out more. The entire performance will be created using the voices of people aged 50+ who have been interviewed by a team of Age Better in Sheffield volunteers. We’ll explore how Sheffield has changed, learn about different neighborhoods and communities, and hear stories about living and growing older in our Steel City.

Love food? Age Better in Sheffield has started a new project which will bring people together around food. You might be keen to try out new dishes, to share your own culinary creations, or maybe you’re starting from scratch! Everyone’s welcome to get together over food, learn new skills, and share stories and recipes. Our tummys are rumbling already. A couple of weeks ago, we had our launch event at Foodhall and met with volunteers and participants over a tasty meal. Me’n’u asks volunteers to take a spare plate of their dinner to participants’ houses, and to eat together with them. We are also setting up community cooking sessions for people to learn new skills and get together over a tasty treat! Volunteers of any age are welcome to join us. If you love hosting, and want some company in the evening, then we’d love to hear from you. This is a great opportunity to share stories and good food with other members of your community. A volunteer will come to your house, bringing with them dinner that you will share together – and this can be as often as you like! Anyone over 50 is welcome to sign up. Whether you’d like to volunteer or participate, we’d love to hear from you! Get in touch with Age Better in Sheffield 0114 2900 250 or email care@syha.co.uk.

WINTER’S EVE FOLKLORE FESTIVAL AT CRICH TRAMWAY VILLAGE The Winter’s Eve Folklore Festival brings the season to a close at Crich Tramway Village, near Matlock, so it’s your last chance to make the most of the facilities on offer during the week commencing Monday 30th October 2017. Activities vary each day from Monday 30th October to Friday 3rd November from 12 noon, and include the options of Willow Weaving, Children’s Crafts, Sewing Workshops, Ghost Talks and National Tramway Museum talks, plus a funfair all week. Children wearing Halloween costume on Tuesday 31st October will receive free admission, so it’s a great venue for the children to take vintage tram rides, engage in craft making and visit the Face Painter and Balloon modeller. If you enjoy jugglers, it’s your chance to see "The Daddy of all Mummies" juggling. On Wednesday 1st November, an expert will be on hand from Hansons Auctioneers and Valuers, so bring along your items to be valued – you could be sitting on a fortune! Andy Martin provides live Folk Music in the Red Lion Pub on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 5pm – 7pm. Thursday will see entertainment from the Ripley Morris Dancers, while Friday offers a range of entertainment for the children, from Face Painter and Firer Eater, to Guy Making and roaming magician. Event Co-ordinator, Karen Willis, said: “The Winter’s Eve Folklore Festival is an additional event to our usual programme this season and as many of the school children will be back at school, we are focusing events on the afternoons, so that they can still enjoy activities after school.” Saturday and Sunday, Crich Tramway Village

is open from 10.00am to 5.30pm (last admissions 4.00pm) and as a thank you to the Heritage Lottery Fund for their support, Saturday 4th November provides free admission to any adult purchasing a Lotto ticket for the Lotto Draw on that date. Follow the campaign on Twitter: #ThanksToYou. The residents of Crich are also entitled to free admission on Saturday 4th November (proof of residency required). Marketing Manager, Amanda Blair said: “We want to say thank you to the Heritage Lottery Fund by offering players of Lotto, on Saturday 4th November, the chance to show their Lotto tickets for that day’s draw, to gain free admission. As part of our engagement with the local community, we are also offering residents living within 4 miles of Crich free admission on the Saturday.” Sunday 5th November is the final day of the season and in preparation for a major depot refurbishment, many of the trams will be being moved in the ‘Big Tram Shunt’, providing great photo opportunities. Please visit Crich Tramway Village website for opening times for the last two weeks of the season: www.tramway.co.uk or call: 01773 854321.

GRIMETHORPE COLLIERY BAND CENTENARY CELEBRATION ELSECAR HERITAGE CENTRE CONDUCTED BY FRANK RENTON Words by Andrew Platts What an absolute privilege it was to be present at this wonderful concert performed by the world famous Grimethorpe Colliery Band conducted by Frank Renton. Frank is both an excellent conductor and a genial host and the programme commenced with the Overture Le Domino Noir and it was a fine and traditional start to the programme. This was followed by a cornet solo, Ave Maria, by Roger Webster who remains one of the finest cornet players of his generation and it was warmly appreciated by the packed audience. J.S Bach was next up with a very clever arrangement entitled ‘Little Fugue’ and it provided an excellent contrast. The next feature was a solo by Baritone player Michael Cavanagh as he performed ‘Peace’ by John Golland. I was lucky to have played in a band conducted by John many years ago and he was a consummate musician. Michael’s rich tone and musicality would have been appreciated by John and the audience loved it. This was followed by The Lady is a Tramp which showed a different side to the band and whilst brass bands don’t usually swing very well, swing they did. It was now time to reflect upon the enormous influence of the film ‘Brassed Off’. Written and filmed during difficult times for the band and mining communities it featured a wonderful arrangement of ‘Danny Boy’ or to give it the proper title ‘Irish Tune from County Derry.’ The simple beauty of this piece and the warm sounds of the band provided a poignant moment and memories of the band playing this in the film, as Danny the conductor was ill in his hospital bed and the band played this below his window. The first half finished with an incredible rendition of Jimmy Webb’s MacArthur Park. The contrast and dynamics within this great arrangement were handled with aplomb and mastery and it was an awesome climax as we went into the interval. The band were once again in full flow as they opened the second half with ‘Let’s Face the Music and Dance’ and we knew we were in for a treat. ‘Brassed Off’ featured in our next solo with,

probably, the most famous flugel horn solo ever as Jamie Smith reprised the Adagio from Rodrigo’s Concerto de Aranjuez, or as it has become more familiarly known “Orange Juice.” What a fine player this young man is and the ease of his playing and lovely full tone was a pleasure to hear. After a lively rendition of Cole Porter’s ‘I’ve got you under my skin’ the audience was both privileged and very lucky to have been present for our next soloist, the band’s Principal Euphonium player Chris Robertson. Throughout the night I was aware of his high quality playing within the band however his solo was from another place. His playing of an arrangement of the hymn ‘In Christ Alone’ reached celestial heights and those with and without faith would have thanked God that they were there to hear it. An original piece entitled ‘Lake of Tenderness’ was sublime and this led into another original piece that was a direct contrast. ‘Hogarth’s Hoedown’ which was composed by Elgar Howarth, a previous conductor of the band, during a time of great success and innovation, and it made a welcome return to the programme. It’s difficult to put into words the finale as you really had to be there. The band chose to finish the concert with ‘The Hut of Baba Yaga’ and ‘The Great Gates of Kiev’ from Musssorgky’s ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ arranged for the band by Elgar Howarth. The complexity of the music and the demands upon the band, both technically and dynamically are enormous and both were handled with consummate skill and world class musicianship. The audience clapped and shouted for more and we were then regaled with another ‘Brassed Off’ special, the Finale to the William Tell Overture played at a speed that would be beyond the abilities of most ensembles. All in all, a wonderful and outstanding programme of music played by a much-loved, world class band. Grimethorpe Colliery Band I salute you and here’s to the next 100 years.

NORWEGIAN SQUEEZE IN BONUS SHOW ON METALLICA TOUR Kvelertak are set to embark on tour this month as main support to Metallica around the UK but as a bonus they’ve also managed to squeeze in a few headline shows of their own in between, including a visit to Corporation this Friday (27th). The bands third studio album Nattesferd came out earlier this year to critical praise with frontman Erlend Hjelvik commenting, “However cliché it may sound, I not afraid to say that this is our best one yet! An exquisite smorgasbord of riffs infused with everything between the best of classic rock and heavy metal. I’m certain it will blow the minds of both old and new fans. WORKING MEN’S CLUB BOOK UNVEILING SET TO HONOUR BOBBY KNUTT The last act to ever perform with Bobby Knutt is set to headline a night in his memory this Friday (October 27th). The South Yorkshire comedy heavyweight was all set to go back to his 1970s clubland roots and perform at the launch night of Neil Anderson’s ‘Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to Working Men’s Clubs’ book - but he tragically died last month. Now The Grumbleweeds – one of the biggest acts on the circuit in the 1970s – have stepped in and are set to perform their brand new show in memory of the star. Bobby Knutt - known to millions in recent months as Eddie Dawson in ITV’s Benidorm gave his last ever interview to local author Neil Anderson for the book. The ‘Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to Working Men’s Clubs’ launch night is set to be a tribute to Bobby Knutt and includes performances by comedian Jimmy Carol, Stephanie King and the girls from Elysium and, in proper club night fashion, bingo is also included.

The event takes place at The Walkley (fka Walkley Working Men’s Club) and starts at 8pm. Neil Anderson said: “The Grumbleweeds were great friends of Bobby Knutt and it’s fitting they’ve agreed to step in, perform, and lead the tributes to one of the city’s funniest men. “Bobby Knutt was a true professional and he’d want to ensure the event went ahead. We’re going to ensure it’s a night he’d have been proud of.” Tickets are £10 and available in advance from The Walkley or call Stephanie King to book on

07745 942071. The event will also be raising funds for local children’s charities. The ‘Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to Working Men’s Clubs’ celebrates the golden era of the movement when over 4,000 venues made up one of the biggest live entertainment networks the country had ever known. The Walkley (fka Walkley Working Men’s Club) is situated at 207 Providence Rd, Sheffield S6 5BH.

THE SENSATIONAL 60’S EXPERIENCE MAKES AN EXPLOSIVE RETURN TO SHEFFIELD Without doubt the most explosive 60’s show touring the UK, for one night only. With a brand new production for 2017, calling in to Sheffield City Hall on Saturday 2nd December. Five legendary names take to the stage and deliver to you a night never to be forgotten. With the definite feel good factor this is must see 60’s show for 2017. Starring Mike Pender (Original voice of The Searchers) Chris

Farlowe, Herman’s Hermits, The Fortunes, The New Amen Corner. Hits include Needles and Pins, Out Of Time, I’m Into Something Good, Storm In A Tea Cup, Bend Me Shape Me plus many more. Step back in time to when pop music was at its very best. Now more than ever-the genuine article- Mike Pender is the voice of The Searchers. One of the greats to have come out of the Liverpool “Beat Boom”. His is

the rich vocal talent so evident on so many of the Hit recordings that have become 60's classics. Everybody - even if they only have a passing interest in 60's Music, remembers "Needles and Pins" - one of the greatest ever records to come out of the greatest ever period in Pop Music History! There were, of course, many other 'Hit' recordings that feature not only Mike's vocals, but also his equally distinctive 12-string 'jangly' guitar sound that became such a feature of The Searchers' recordings. With over 50 years of success in the business Mike is still touring worldwide performing The Searchers million selling hits such as Sugar and Spice, Sweets For My Sweet , Don’t Throw Your Love Away , When You Walk In The Room

and of course Needles and Pins. Originally Chris Farlowe and The Thunderbirds started out in the late fifties. Chris later moved on to perform all over Europe & still does to this day. His hits include classics like Out Of Time, Handbags and Glad Rags (which was also released by Rod Stewart as a single ) Let The Heartaches Begin, Reach Out I’ll Be There. Herman’s Hermits throughout the mid-60’s music scene proved to be a dominating force worldwide. From 1964 the band chalked up over 23 top 20 singles, 10 hit albums, 3 major movies. Hermans Hermits as of to date have sold 75,000,000 records worldwide. Their chart breaking hits include, Mrs Brown You’ve Got A Lovely Daughter, Silhouettes & I’m Into Something Good The Fortunes. VISIONARY BUSINESS HEAD GOES BACK TO HIS SOUL ROOTS FOR AMY’S HOUSE

Peter Stringfellow’s legendary King Mojo of the sixties is the inspiration for a charity fundraiser next month. Local businessman Michael Bell – a former regular at the teenage club that specialised in soul and Motown and brought some of the biggest stars on the planet to the Pitsmoor area of Sheffield – has put together a night that evokes the spirt of the ‘60s club whilst raising money for local charity, Amy’s House. His Motown & Soul night stars popular local act Highway Child who are playing live. Former Limit DJ Paul Unwin will be spinning the discs on the evening and will be playing music by many of the household names that performed at King Mojo – everyone from Stevie Wonder to Ike and Tina Turner. The event takes place at Sheffield’s Genting

Club on Friday, November 3rd. Michael Bell said: “We’ve got a fabulous headline act, a wonderful DJ and we’re raising money for a great cause. We’re expecting a busy night.” Amy’s House provides support and care for children with special needs and their families. Michael Bell runs The Results Hub with business partner Helen Sweet. The company specialise in mentoring new and established businesses.

His entrepreneurial talent was spotted early on. Had the former Kenning’s motor mechanic not been persuaded to swap his overalls for a two piece suit, his finance company with a £3 million turnover might never have happened. Tickets for the Motown and Soul night can be purchased from Genting Club Sheffield – they are priced at £10 each. Tickets will also be available on the door.

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

I finally made it to the new venue I wanted to try, a 33 acre wind lashed reservoir, in search of pike this week. It’s another gem on the Stoke-on-Trent Angling Society card, but one I’ve never fished before, so after a walk around recently, I was itching to get started! I pulled up in the car park to find I was the only one on the venue, and after the lashing of Storm Ophelia the day before, I wasn’t all that surprised, as the wind still fairly howled across the exposed waters… It was cold, it was expected to remain cold, and with the blustery squalls still evident, I knew I was on for a tough session. The water had dropped around three feet, as the reservoir is also used to moderate the surrounding canal network, so instead of being perched atop the platforms, I was able to find some semblance of shelter nestled on the lake bed itself, in the lee of the retaining wall; hopefully, it would prove a little more comfortable. Prior research had pointed to the pike being on the feed; I was informed that one particular angler had landed six or seven fish a couple of days before, although my informant had unfortunately blanked! My contact had also casually mentioned a river bed running across the area, and that pike could often be found hunting within the depression, but it took a hefty cast to drop a deadbait on the spot, so I tooled up with 3lb test curve Sonik SK3 XTR rods, and the mighty Tounos 10000 reel to enable such a sixty odd yard cast in safety. Both were perched on single stick arrays, with a drop off indicator on the rear bank stick, and the line tight to the lead. Earlier in the week, I’d been privy to an internet debate, during which an ‘experienced’ predator angler had advised a newcomer to fish slack lines whilst deadbaiting, which in truth, horrified me! I cannot condone the idea of giving a pike the opportunity to lift, engulf, and swallow a bait before moving off and giving any indication at my end, which is why I use the tightest set up I can possibly manage. Braid gives even greater indication due to its non-stretch properties, and should also be given serious consideration by the pike angler. Notification is everything when pike fishing to prevent harm to the fish, and any indication should be immediately wound down on to until resistance is felt, then a strike made to set the hooks at the earliest opportunity; gone are the days of “…count to ten”. Hit the run as soon as it is noticed, you’ll be amazed how fast a pike can swallow a bait resulting in a deeply hooked fish, so don’t give it chance! It’s better to strike early and miss the fish, than leave it too late and cause difficulty… As always when presented with a new pike water, experimentation is required to find the tactics and bait to suit. Both baits were legered on three ounce leads, on one rod, a roach deadbait pinned down, and on the other, a disgustingly bloody piece of lamprey, without doubt one of the best pike baits available. Both were heaved out towards the river bed, tightened, and lines placed in the indicators, ready to release under the slightest of pressure… The wind was getting stronger, so my brolly was firmly dug in and tied to a nearby platform, whilst I hunkered down with a brew as I watched the waves crash against the far bank. I was still on my own, under a leaden sky, and enjoying watching kestrel and wagtail fight against the conditions as they flitted around the lake, whilst listening to the hum of the wind as my sheltered strained and snapped at its tethers… it was cold, but it was blissful to experience as I waited expectantly…proper pike fishing! A couple of hours in, and I’d checked the baits to

see whether I was fishing on weed, or clear spots, then settled back under the confines of my nylon abode, when I spied a solitary figure carefully making his way towards me. He got closer, and asked whether I’d caught, to which I replied in the negative. “You’ll be lucky today” he informed me, “I’ve had eleven straight blanks so far, it’s not fishing well, and the weather isn’t right!” No sooner had he uttered his greeting, than a single bleep gave enough cause for me to glance at the rods, and note that interest was being signalled in the roach hook bait! The indicator head pulled up, then dropped, then released as I engaged the bail arm, wound down, and swept the rod into a graceful arc as I set the trebles; fish on! (Much to the disgruntlement of the chap next to me) A couple of minutes was all that was required to bring the fish back towards from the sixty yard mark, and as it spun in the weak sunlight, I could see it was marked by a previous encounter, wither with an angler, or a bigger fish. Once in the net, it looked to be a scraper double figure fish, hopefully of around ten pounds, and I could see a bait lodged deep in its throat! Thankfully, my trebles were only lightly nicked in the jaw, one in the scissor, and one under the tongue, not attached to the bait, and both were quickly removed as the pike coughed up the bait on to the mat… it was a smelt! I’m no magician, and after checking that I had indeed put a roach on the hooks, I can only assume that the fish had been recently caught, or had picked up a discarded bait as other anglers had packed up the day before! Either way, the scrapes were treated with a lanoline based carp care cream, and the pike gathered up in the net, then rested in the margins until recovered. It swam off strongly, and I returned to replace the bait and recast. The gentleman in attendance wandered off to greet two other anglers who had since arrived, so I poured another brew, and sat back to watch the water, hoping for another fish. An hour later, he returned, and informed me that the chap above had caught a similarly sized fish to mine, but his chum has nothing to report, but at least something was happening. My lamprey bait remained untouched, which surprised me, and as I moved to retrieve it, the indicator pulled off, the alarm squealed, and line peeled off the spool; another fish! Again, I swept the rod aloft, and felt the firm thump of fury on the other end. Initially, it felt like a small fish, but then the rod took on an almighty curve as this pike hugged the bottom, making strong runs left and right as it tried to dislodge the hooks. As the tussle continued, I managed to recover some line, and the fish came up off the bottom to surface like a U-boat a couple of rod lengths out. It was a decent fish, I could see within the oily swirl a lengthy predator, perhaps even the first twenty of the season, as it turned and plunged back into the depths, before it tried once more to take line. At this point, I made a mistake; instead of letting it fight against the clutch, I clamped the spool to force the fish to the

surface, and as it arrived on a tight line, it burst into the air in a glittering shower of spray! It was majestic; a lovely dark green back mottled with bright yellow tiger stripes, framed by glistening droplets, as it leapt forth in what seemed like slow motion! Every detail was crystal clear, including the red tipped trebles which flew back towards me as the monster shook its head, twisted in the air, and threw the trace! Ahhh! It splashed back down, crashing through the surface, and disappearing, leaving nothing but a turbulent ripple, and a very disappointed angler! I was enthralled by that fish, it was a superb specimen, in pristine condition, which beat me hands (or fins) down. My own error, and keenness to see it had been my undoing, so I only had myself to blame! Sadly, that was the last opportunity of the visit, and although I waited until dusk, when the wind dropped and sky took on hues of orange and pink, I had no more interest in my baits. I can’t pretend that I didn’t enjoy it though, and perhaps losing that fish is a good thing, it will certainly heighten my anticipation for next time, and, as I also witnessed the angler next door land an immaculate fish of eighteen pounds, it only served to whet my appetite for more! I’ll be back next week for another go… hopefully I’ll hook my nemesis again soon!

The County Senior League returned to league action after most teams had the week off last time out due to County cup action. Premier Division League leaders AFC Penistone Church Reserves were victorious once more on Saturday, as they beat Jubilee Sports 3-1 at the Memorial Ground. Sam Scrivens scored twice for Penistone, along with substitute Tom Adams. Grimethorpe Sports remain in second place after Tony Bennett scored five times to give them a 11-0 win over struggling Millmoor Juniors. Grimethorpe are just a point off the pace with two games spare and remain the only unbeaten side in the Premier Division. A Luke Townsend hat-trick helped third placed Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves to a 5-0 home win over Denaby United. The win makes it five-in-a-row for Stocksbridge, who scored five for the second consecutive week. Alex Torr and Charles Tunnard both scored twice for Oughtibridge WMFC, as they beat Wombwell Main at Wombwell Main Cricket Club. The win takes Oughtibridge up to fifth position. North Gawber Colliery ended a run of back-to-back defeats, with a 3-1 win against Denaby Main at Woolley Miners Welfare. After a poor start Frecehville made it three straight wins, with a narrow victory over Swinton Athletic at Davy Sports Club. Elsewhere, fourth placed South Kirkby Colliery were held to a 1-1 draw at home against Handsworth Parramore Reserves. Division One Goals for Josh Shepherd, Robert Gorman, Sean Ebbs and Robert Warner gave Kiveton Park a thrilling 4-3 home win over Second placed AFC Dronfield. Dodworth Miners Welfare took advantage of Dronfield’s slip to move eight points clear at the top, as they beat Sheffield Medics 2-0 at home. There was a rare midweek game on Tuesday night at Yorkshire NU Build Stadium, where Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves beat Sheffield Bankers 3-2, with goals from Daniel Critchlow, Rogan Green and Sam Leach. Hemsworth could not build on the victory on the weekend, as they lost 4-2 to previously winless Caribbean Sports. The Bankers also lost again on the weekend, falling to a 6-2 away defeat against High Green Villa. Silkstone United made it back-to-back home wins, with a 4-1 home win over Wickersley. The win moves Silkstone into a mid-table position. Division Two Second placed Sheffield Bankers Reserves suffered a shock 6-0 defeat to Maltby Main Reserves at Muglet Lane. Also at Muglet Lane, Manor Hotel registered their second home win of the season; 3-2 against South Kirkby Colliery Reserves. Third placed Swinton Athletic Reserves stretched their unbeaten run to five games, with a 1-0 win over New Bohemians at Swinton Miners Welfare. Matthew Semley scored twice to inspire Working Wonders to a 3-2 away win over Burngreave FC. The win moved Working Wonders up to fourth place. North Gawber Colliery Reserves claimed their second win of the season, with a narrow 1-0 away win over AFC Dronfield Reserves. Elsewhere, Worsbrough Bridge Development marked their first home league game of the season, with a fine 5-2 win against Caribbean Sports Reserves.

POINTS SHARED IN THRILLER KIEFFER Moore’s 11th goal of the season earned Rotherham United a hard-fought point following a six-goal thriller at the Kassam Stadium. In a see-saw first half, Joe Newell’s second goal in a week put Paul Warne’s men ahead but Jack Payne and Josh Ruffels turned the tide of the affair before Marek Rodak saved Ryan Ledson’s spot-kick. Curtis Nelson added Oxford’s third but Ryan Williams gave Rotherham hope, just shy of the interval, before Moore struck late on to earn the Millers a deserved share of the spoils. Following their midweek defeat at the hands of AFC Wimbledon in midweek, Millers chief Warne reshuffled his defensive pack for the visit to the Oxfordshire. Slovakian stopper Rodak returned between the Millers sticks while Josh Emmanuel and Semi Ajayi were given an opportunity to impress in the visitors’ backline at the expense of Richard Wood and Shaun Cummings. Newell was rewarded for his stunning strike at Kingsmeadow with a starting berth while former Millers Wes Thomas and Scott Shearer were named in the home squad. The hosts were the quickest of the blocks and James Henry’s swinging free-kick was headed over his own bar by Michael Ihiekwe

before the ex-Wolves midfielder threatened the home goal, in the next phase of play, with a tame effort from the edge of the box which was straight down the throat of Rodak. In Rotherham’s first foray of note, Will Vaulks shrugged off the attentions of Ruffels to try his luck from distance but he dragged his effort harmlessly wide of the target before Anthony Forde worked a yard of space on Nelson to swing a centre which took a wicked deflection off a retreating defender to loop into the grateful hands of home ‘keeper Simon Eastwood. Forde was in the thick of the action and he cut inside to deliver a tantalising cross which was met by the head of Richie Towell but the Brighton loanee could not control his header as it ballooned over the bar before the Millers were indebted to Ihiekwe for a timely sliding tackle, at the other end, as it halted the menacing run of Henry, who looked poised to strike on goal. However, the Millers stunned the home faithful by breaking the deadlock on 20 minutes when Vaulks’ floated ball to the channel saw Emmanuel win a battle of wills near the touchline to swing a left-footed centre which was only half-cleared by an Oxford defender into the path of Newell, on the edge of the box, and the ex-Peterborough midfielder kept his nerve to control a volley which beat the outstretched hand of Eastwood to nestle in the home net. Rotherham’s joy proved short lived as Oxford equalised, just a minute later, when the visitors failed to clear their lines and Payne controlled smartly to advance menacingly to the edge of the box before stroking a fine left-footed effort which arrowed into the bottom corner of the Millers net evading the attentions of Rodak. The home side were sprung into action and Thomas fired a rasping effort which blazed

over the Millers bar before Ricardinho got the better of Williams to plant a delicious cross which flew across the visitors’ six-yard box. The Millers failed to heed the warning as Oxford took the initiative when Ryan Ledson’s punt upfield held in the wind and Henry won a tussle with Mattock to play the ball into the path of Ruffels, who fired what seemed a tame effort towards the heart of the visitors goal but Rodak was deceived, possibly by a small deflection, as it flew into the Millers net. The Millers keeper went from villain to hero, in a matter of minutes, as Ricardinho sneaked around the back, before looking to float the ball into the danger area and Vaulks, in attempting to charge down his centre, raised his arm and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. However, from the resultant penalty, Rodak correctly guessed Ledson’s intentions, to dive smartly to his left to smother the danger. The visitors had a penalty appeal of their own when Williams’ snap shot seemed to strike the hand of a retreating home defender, but it fell on deaf ears before Payne capitalised on a Millers error to sting the palms of Rodak with an effort from the edge of the box. However, Oxford took a firm grip on the game, with half time approaching, when Payne, and Nelson capitalised on the hesitation to poke home from close range. However, Rotherham reduced the arrears on the stroke of half time when Vaulks’ long throw was flicked on into the path of Williams, who got the ball from under his feet, before calmly stroking home. In the aftermath of the goal, Canice Carroll saw yellow for preventing the Millers retrieving the ball for a quick restart. The Millers had the first sight of goal in the second half when Emmanuel got on the wrong side of his marker to release Williams, who showed great poise to pull the ball back to the edge of the box into the path of Mattock, who weighed up his options to strike a rising effort which forced Eastwood into a superb, acrobatic save to preserve his side’s slender lead. Moments later, Moore put a tricky ball under his spell to present Towell with a shooting opportunity but the Irishman could not keep his shot down as it ended up in the car park behind the goal. rare Oxford attack, Payne exchanged passes with Alex Mowatt to fire an instinctive effort towards goal but Rodak was well-placed to snuff out the danger before Henry’s volley from the edge of the box was bravely blocked by Newell, moments later. Just past the hour mark, Ledson became the latest to see yellow for hauling down Williams before Henry took advantage of good work by Thomas to strike goalwards but Rodak got his body behind his shot. The Millers came within a coat of paint of an equaliser when a long punt forward was misjudged by John Mousinho in the swirling wind and with Eastwood in no man’s land, Moore lobbed the ball over the home ‘keeper but to Rotherham’s anguish, the ball struck the crossbar before going over the home goal. Minutes later, Moore and Williams were both denied in the box before Newell’s piledriver was blocked en-route to goal. At the other end, Carroll headed Payne’s corner back across goal with no-one able to make the decisive touch before the duo combined, in a carbon copy move, as another Carroll header fizzed narrowly wide of target. With 12 minutes remaining, Rotherham deservedly got back on level terms when Newell’s arrowed pass split open the Oxford defence and Williams kept his nerve to play a slide-rule pass across the box which was inch-perfect for the run of Moore, who showed great composure to slot the ball past the advancing Eastwood. The Millers almost turned the game on its head, moments later, when a free-kick was planted in the box and Ihiekwe headed on into the path of Moore, who nodded home from close range but any joy was curtailed with the ex-Tranmere defender adjudged to have illegally climbed over his marker in the build-up. In the dying minutes, sub Joe Rothwell ghosted through a non-existent Millers defence to fire a rasping effort which brought the best out of Rodak before Mattock incurred the wrath of the referee by kicking the ball away, in the last noteworthy action of a pulsating encounter.

LESSONS TO LEARN

Darren Ferguson believes a lot of lessons can be learned from Rovers’ 3-0 defeat at home to Walsall in Sky Bet League One. Three second half goals were enough to get Walsall the win, and the Rovers boss was disappointed with his side’s overall display. “My job as a manager is to try and find the answer as that is our worst performance of the season, we had a great chance to get back to back league wins for the first time this season,” Ferguson said. “The fans have stuck with us in the main as they’ve understood we’ve deserved more in some games but we didn’t deserve anything. I need to look at the whole situation and have a good think as to why this has happened, unfortunately we haven’t got another game for a week but that means we have longer to analyse the defeat.” Having won their previous two home games, Ferguson felt Rovers missed a good opportunity to make it three victories in a row at the Keepmoat Stadium. “We didn’t really create much and they were happy to sit in, credit to them as their game plan worked but we helped them a lot today,” he added. “We were playing a team who hadn’t won in six, but I had to get into the players at half time about the lack of urgency. Having said that, Jon Whitney has done a great job there and he had them set up to play a certain way and his players took advantage once they went ahead.”

BUOYANT BLADES MARCH ON United’s impressive home form continued with another deserved home win. The decisive goals came in the first half with vice-captain Paul Coutts and captain Billy Sharp on target. United made two changes to the starting XI. Coutts was available again following suspension and replaced Lundstram, who dropped to the bench. Baldock was deemed fit again and was a straight swap for the injured Freeman. Kicking towards the Kop in the first half, the Blades were the first to register a chance after Clarke forced a free-kick

out of Bacuna but O’Connell headed Duffy’s set-piece wide. From the first Reading attack, O’Connell was on defensive duty, deflecting Barrow’s effort wide. The busy O’Connell was involved with a back-post header from United’s first corner on 12 minutes and Reading attempted to counter in response but this time Baldock was on defensive duty. United, though, were getting on top and went close when Fleck and Stevens linked up on the left but Clarke swept the ball just wide at the near post. The opening goal, however, soon

A TASTE OF LIFE AT THE TOP WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH It’s been a while since I experienced a Premier League match. The last coming in 2007 when Sheffield United were relegated on the last day of the season. However, last weekend I had the chance to visit Wembley Stadium to take in Tottenham Hotspur against Liverpool. This trip coming a day after taking my usual seat on the kop to watch United continue their fantastic start to the season. The two matchday experiences could not have felt more different. If you push to one side that Spurs play at Wembley, which shouldn’t be allowed, it was still a bizarre environment. Walking around the concourse at the national stadium it quickly became clear that those in attendance were coming from a mix of fan bases. Juventus, Manchester City and Manchester United badges were present amongst the home supporters. A

Liverpool fan was sat on the row in front, but made no attempt to disguise his passion for the club. The supporter was decorated in red shirt, finished with ‘Coutinho, 10’ on the back, and the famous Anfield scarf. No wonder Spurs have struggled at home, their own supporters are outnumbered by tourists (including myself) and supporters of other clubs. A Premier League record crowd of 80,827 failed to drum up any kind of consistent atmosphere and hoards of fans began to leave at around the 70th minute mark. Sheffield United are only 19 places behind Spurs in the football pyramid, but the experience for the home supporters is vastly different. Even if United seal another promotion in the next few years, the strong connection amongst the home supporters at Bramall Lane is unlikely to be hindered.

arrived, a result of Coutts winning possession from Aluko. Baldock and Duffy then combined down the right and after Clarke was shown away from goal, the ball dropped perfectly for COUTTS to curl into the top corner from outside the penalty area. The next chance saw the Blades go close to a second from one of the experimental free-kick moves off the training ground, but after Coutts linked up with Basham, O’Connell’s shot was blocked by Gunter. United remained on top and controlled the first half possession and territory, leading

to the second goal, on 37 minutes. Baldock’s reverse pass split the Reading defence and allowed Duffy the space to pass across goal for the unmarked SHARP to slot home from close range. Reading won a couple of corners close to the break and Beerens fired in a 30-yard shot that was just wide but those moments could not prevent the United players receiving an ovation from the Bramall Lane crowd at the interval. The start to the second period was low-key but the Blades remained on top. On 54 minutes a Duffy free-kick saw Sharp head towards goal but Mannone

made a fantastic save and the rebound saw O’Connell crowded out. Soon after, another Duffy free-kick saw Coutts recycle possession and Sharp and Basham went close to converting at the back post. Ilori fired wide, Gunter’s effort was blocked and substitute McShane added himself to an attack but headed wide as Reading attempted a fight-back. Brooks replaced Duffy and Lundstram took over from Sharp. Reading gave themselves hope with five minutes to go, BEERENS converting Barrow’s pass from close range and that prompted a bit of urgency

from the visitors. Basham held firm to halt a Swift run and O’Connell cut out Barrow cross. Five minutes of added time being announced was a bonus for Reading and the additional period was entertaining. Lundstram put Clarke through as the visitors committed bodies forward but Mannone saved with his legs. Carter-Vickers was then called upon to make two clearing headers before the final chance saw Clarke attempt to put Brooks through, although he was crowded out. No matter, the final whistle followed seconds later.

ANOTHER DESERVED VICTORY

Chris Wilder felt his side were once again full value for a ninth Championship victory in 13 matches, as Reading became the latest side to be beaten at Bramall Lane. The Blades produced a near perfect first 45 minutes which saw Paul Coutts and Billy Sharp get on the scoresheet and despite a spirited fightback from the Royals and a goal from Roy Beerens, United held on to take the points tally to 27. And Wilder was pleased with what he saw from his players once more, remark-

ing: “It was a wet and windy day, typical Sheffield weather really. I’ve looked at the players closely this week and they’ve been bang at it so I’m not surprised to see them produce that type of performance. We’ve got something going for us at the moment and it’s fantastic to see. From the first minute right through to the 95th minute we’re consistent and that’s what I’ve praised them for in the dressing room.” The Blades boss added: “I’m not embarrassed at all to have to defend at the end to

see the game out, they had nothing to lose and chucked plenty at us. We weren’t as composed when we got the ball as we normally are and we invited the pressure a bit, but saying that it’s a minor criticism and we certainly deserved all three points. The first-half was right up

there in what we’ve produced this season. The front two worked their socks off and the skipper was outstanding and deserved his goal. Leon (Clarke) deserved one too, but to a man we didn’t have to carry anybody and when we had to defend we did.”

HEROIC HOLLIE HAS A GREAT DAY OUT

Sheffield United has shown its support for a city youngster who was injured in the Manchester terror attack earlier this year. Hollie Booth, 12, who suffered two broken legs in the tragedy, was personally invited to Bramall Lane by United co-owner, Kevin McCabe, for a tour of the stadium and a meet-andgreet with all members of the Blades first team ahead of the home win over Ipswich Town. Grandfather Kevin Brewster and dad Dale Booth joined Hollie on the tour along with her sister, Demi. Hollie

was sadly caught up in the Manchester attack earlier this year. Hollie’s aunt, Kelly Brewster, tragically lost her life in the terror attack after heroically shielding Hollie and her sister Claire, 33, from the blast. United co-owner McCabe, first team manager Chris Wilder and captain Billy Sharp all visited Hollie her during her recovery at Manchester Royal Infirmary. Hollie’s grandfather Kevin, 63, said: “It was absolutely superb, she had a beautiful day. Kevin e) personally invited us to the game and has been abso-

lutely fantastic. They’ve been brilliant. We’ve had Kevin and Chris and Billy Sharp visit Hollie while she was in hospital - each time they came it just made her day. Hollie’s got an autograph book, they were all signing that for her too. She hasn’t stopped talking about it ever since. We’re extremely grateful to Sheffield United for their show of support and wish them all the best for the remainder of the season.” Dave McCarthy, operations director at United, said: “As a communitybased Club, it means

a lot to us to support local people such as Hollie and her family. After what Hollie and her family have been through in the past few months I hope that we were able to offer at least a little bit of respite. I was delighted to see Hollie given a tour of the stadium by coowner Kevin McCabe and I’m glad she was able to meet and greet all the players before kick-off - Hollie and her family are welcome back at Bramall Lane at any time.”

OWLS’ SORRY RUN CONTINUES WITH FOURTH LOSS IN FIVE An early penalty from Matej Vydra and late hit from Bradley Johnson decided an entertaining but controversial clash as Derby beat ten-man Wednesday 2-0. Glenn Loovens’ comeback ended after just five minutes when

he was sent off for bringing down Vydra in the box and the Czech forward got up to convert from 12 yards. Wednesday regained their composure to give an excellent account of themselves against the in-form Rams but fell short of finding

that crucial goal. And on 86 minutes with the Owls pressing forward, the hosts made the points safe as substitute Johnson swivelled to drill home. Carlos Carvalhal’s side had to overcome the worst possible start as they suffered a double

blow with the contest barely underway. After Johnny Russell threaded through to Vydra, Loovens tangled with the striker, who went to ground just inside the penalty area. The referee pointed to the spot and to compound matters issued a straight red card to the Owls captain. Vydra took the kick himself and sent Keiren Westwood the wrong way to open the scoring. It might have been 2-0 ten minutes later when Tom Lawrence burst in on goal and dinked over Westwood but the ball struck the post and Kieran Lee cleared the danger. The Owls regrouped, though, and went on to enjoy a promising spell of possession as the first

half unfolded. Gary Hooper was denied at the last by Curtis Davies and the Wednesday hitman then fired just over after a neat five-man move. Steven Fletcher went agonisingly close with a downward header that bounced just wide as the Owls hunted an equaliser and just before the break, Fletcher went down under a challenge from Craig Forsyth but the referee waved away the penalty appeals.Derby responded with a Russell piledriver from distance that Westwood did well to parry wide and that proved the last action of a lively opening period. The Rams responded in the early throes of the second half and Vydra failed by a whisker

to get a connection on Russell’s curling cross before Westwood charged out to save at the feet of the latter. At the other end Scott Carson dived athletically to thwart Barry Bannan as Wednesday managed the numerical disadvantage to their credit. They bossed the ball for much of the second half, forcing the home side into errors, with substitute Lucas Joao proving a handful. But all that counted for nothing as Derby doubled their advantage four minutes from time. Russell threaded to Johnson, who turned to fire hard and low past Westwood to settle the destiny of the points.

CARVAHAL RUES COSTLY DECISIONS Carlos Carvalhal felt his side felt hard done by at Pride Park following the 2-0 defeat to Derby. Wednesday had skipper Glenn Loovens sent off after just five minutes and the same incident saw the Rams awarded a penalty that Matej Vydra converted. Bradley Johnson got a second goal late in the contest to seal victory but only after the Owls were denied a penalty of their own when Steven Fletcher tumbled under a challenge from Curtis Davies. Carvalhal said: “I am disappointed because this is four games in a row when we have had a poor decision against us. Steven Fletcher has no reason to go down because he is ready to shoot one on one with the goalkeeper, he is a striker who wants to score. OK, Derby get a penalty early in

the game for a push. But when Fletcher is pushed, we did not get a penalty. So, of course, I am disappointed and frustrated but congratulations to Derby as they won the game.” On the match itself, Carlos said he was pleased with how his ten-man team responded having suffered the early double blow: “We played very well, we had to adapt very quickly and this is something that we did. We had a lot of the possession, we had chances and if we get the penalty, we score, then we come away from very difficult circumstances with a point. The players gave everything to get back into this game, they showed heart, they showed soul, and in my opinion we deserved at least a draw.”
