DONCASTER MARKET’S 2018 TRANSFORMATION PUSHES AHEAD Doncaster Council’s planning committee last week approved plans to move forward with the transformational design of the Wool Market. The refurbishment to the Wool Market is set to begin in early 2018 which will include giving it a complete makeover with a mixture of new market stalls for retail, eating and drinking. The Wool Market will become an attractive and welcoming destination providing
a new and enhanced offer to retail traders and customers. This will enable the market to host more events, extend the opening hours into the evening and encourage more people into the area. In anticipation of the works beginning, traders who are usually based in the Wool Market can now be found in their temporary new home in either the Grade II listed Corn Exchange, Goose Hill or the International Food Hall. Cllr Bill
Mordue, Cabinet Member for Business, Skills and Economic Development, said: “We are delighted that planning committee have agreed the final plans for the Wool Market and that we can press ahead with the much needed refurbishment works. “The Wool Market is a valuable and historic asset in the market and while the new designs retain the heritage of the Wool Market, they are a complete transformation from
REGIONAL EDITION
what we currently have. This inviting new space will allow the traders to diversify their product ranges as well as giving them the flexibility to open longer and into the evening. This will create an attractive proposition for customers helping draw more people back into one of the best markets in Yorkshire. We are working closely with the traders throughout this process and supporting them with all transitions.
“Many of the traders who were in the Wool Market have now moved to the Corn Exchange, Goose Hill or the International Food Hall. We would encourage all residents and visitors to Doncaster to visit the award winning market and support our traders.” In February Doncaster Council secured more than £3 million of Sheffield City Region SCRIF funding to carry out the refurbishment works for the Wool Market.

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SWITCH ON DRAWS ONE OF THE BIGGEST CROWDS More than 37, 0000 people turned out to see the Christmas lights switch on in Sheffield yesterday. The crowd was one of the biggest in recent years for the annual event. The honour of switching on the lights fell to Sheffield singing talent and Britain’s Got Talent finalist Kyle Tomlinson and The X Factor quarter finalist, Sam Black, who joined Sheffield Lord Mayor, Councillor Anne Murphy in lighting up the city centre. The Lord Mayor said: “It was a fabulous day and I was really happy to see so many people come to the event. The atmosphere was magical, and it was great to meet Kyle and the
pantomime guests from Mother Goose and to see so many Sheffield people out celebrating the festive season. It was truly a spectacular sight”. This year’s Christmas lights are not the only shining attraction for the festive season. Two 3D illuminated butterflies, the largest of which is over six metres high, were also turned on in Millennium Square. The butterflies will be on display for the next six weeks and are a gift from the Confucius Institute at Sheffield University. Dr Lucy Zhao, Director of the University of Sheffield’s Confucius Institute: “The Confucius Institute at the University of Sheffield is celebrating its
10 year anniversary this year and as part of the celebrations, we wanted to go the extra mile and arrange something special for our city. “Butterflies have always been popular in Chinese culture, for example in embroidery, paintings, and porcelain. In China, we have a famous love story known as Butterfly Lovers, in which two lovers were separated by their parents but they flew away together as two butterflies and were never separated again. “The frame of the butterflies being displayed in the city was created through 3D printing. In this sense, the butterfly lights showcase the combination of tradition,
innovation and advanced manufacturing, which is what Sheffield is all about.” The cast of this year’s Mother Goose pantomime at the Lyceum, Benidorm actor, Jake Canuso and Pantomime dame Damien Williams entertained the crowds and there were performances from dance troops and local choirs. Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure said: “I am delighted so many people came to the city centre to mark this occasion. “It was made special by every one of you who came, not only to see the lights being switched on but to spend times with family and friends and
enjoy the performers and activities. “I hope those of you who did not make it will come to the city centre to see the lights and the amazing illuminated butterflies that have been given to us in the spirit of friendship.” Going to see the lights will also be easier and cheaper for anyone who needs to catch a bus or drive to the city centre. The festive Plus One offer allows anyone with a day, week or month ticket to bring along another person for free on journeys into the city centre after 4.30pm and out of the city centre after 6.30pm on Thursdays and all day on Sundays, in the run up to Christmas. Councillors have also agreed to have free car parking all day Sunday at council run on the street pay and display bays and car parks until Christmas Eve.

Food was ok, but the bill was enormous! My wife’s leaving me because “everything I say is irrelevant”. That’s easy for her to say when her brothers girlfriend has just bought a new coffee table. People always ask me why I’m single? I’m single by choice!, unfortunately it’s not my choice. My mate used liquorice as bait when he went fishing. He caught all sorts! My window cleaner was banging on my window shouting and swearing! I thought to myself: He’s lost his rag. If you were 8 years old when “Red, Red Wine” was released UB40 now. GRANDPARENTS URGED TO HELP KIDS HEALTH
Grandparents are a potential health hazard for children and may even increase their risk of cancer, say scientists. They spoil their grandchildren with sweet “treats” and big helpings of fattening food, and expose their young lungs to second-hand tobacco smoke, it is alleged. The extraordinary claims are based on a review of research into the influence grandparents have on lifestyle factors that can sow the seeds of cancer in later life. Lead author Dr Stephanie Chambers, from the University of Glasgow’s Public Health Sciences Unit, said: “While the results of this review are clear that behaviour such as exposure to smoking and regularly treating children increases cancer risks as children grow into adulthood, it is also clear from the evidence that these risks are unintentional. Currently grandparents are not the focus of public health messaging targeted at parents and in light of the evidence from this study, perhaps this is something that needs to change given the prominent role grandparents play in the lives of children.” Previous research has looked at the way parents can affect their children’s susceptibility to cancer and other diseases, but less attention has been paid to the role of part-time carers such as grandparents, said the scientists. The Glasgow team analysed data from 56 studies from 18 countries that included information about the influence of grandparents on their grandchildren. Overall, grandparents were found to have an adverse effect – despite meaning well. In many cases, such as rewarding good behaviour with sweets, they were putting the health of their grandchildren at risk
with kindness. Smoking, poor diet, excess weight and lack of physical activity are all known to increase the risk of cancer. Factors associated with long-term cancer risk were first experienced within the family setting. Social trends, such as the growing proportion of women in the workforce, rising childcare costs, and increasing numbers of single parents, had meant that more children were being placed in the care of their grandparents. The research found that “excessive feeding” of children was a significant grandparent problem, as was providing meals that may be made from scratch but with unhealthy ingredients. Sweets were used to reward, express love, or strengthen the bond between grandparent and child. There was also evidence that the poverty and hunger some grandparents experienced themselves as children led them to believe extra weight was a sign of good health. Grandparents smoking in the home was also identified as having a negative impact, both by setting a bad example and exposing children to second hand tobacco smoke. However, the scientists found there was a more positive finding with respect to physical activity. Grandparents tended to be supportive of children engaging in active pursuits, often providing them with access to the necessary space. Also the studies took no account of the positive emotional benefit of children spending time with their grandparents, the authors pointed out. Dr Chambers added: “From the studies we looked at, it appears that parents often find it difficult to
SOS UK - THE APP NHS - THE VIDEO Download the SOS UK app for free and let us know your thoughts! People across South Yorkshire are being offered the opportunity to test the SOS UK phone app which could potentially help healthcare professionals to know about allergies, conditions or other important facts about themselves in an emergency. The SOS UK app is one of a number of technology solutions that are being tested alongside new ways of delivering healthcare as part of the Perfect Patient Pathway Test Bed programme. The SOS UK app allows the patient or carer to create a health record, showing the information they want to share in an emergency such as allergies, medicines long term conditions, and/or special needs. The app then creates a unique QR code that can be saved to the phone lock screen or printed on an emergency card via the app. Then in the case of a medical emergency, if a paramedic or A&E doctor/ nurse has the technology available to them, they can scan the code using any QR code scanner or the camera on an iPhone / iPad, and have access to the details the patient/ carer has voluntarily entered. The SOS UK app is available from both the iTunes and Google Play app stores for download free of charge up until December 1st 2017.

discuss the issues of passive smoking and over-treating grandchildren. Given that many parents now rely on grandparents for care, the mixed messages about health that children might be getting is perhaps an important discussion that needs to be had.” Professor Linda Bauld, from the charity Cancer Research UK which co-funded the study, said: “With both smoking and obesity being the two biggest preventable causes of cancer in the UK, it’s important for the whole family to work together. Children should never be exposed to second hand smoke. But it’s also important for children to maintain a healthy weight into adulthood, and in today’s busy world it’s often the wider family who have a role to play in keeping youngsters healthy. If healthy habits begin early in life, it’s much easier to continue them as an adult.” Tam Fry, chairman of the National Obesity Forum, said: “Finding a doting grandparent who is confident enough to follow rules laid down by mum and to the letter is frequently a rarity. Both nan and grandpa can leave themselves wide open to manipulative and increasingly savvy grandchildren in their desire to please the little darlings. They bring out the biscuits at the slightest hint of a tantrum and, as the researchers report, they are also often too protective in loco parentis. “The thought of losing children when out in the park may result in the kids being under house arrest – sweeties on demand and woefully short on exercise. Unfortunately, despite the researchers’ suggested messaging, it may ever be so, as parents increasingly need to rely on this free form of childminding.”

HILARITY FOR CHARITY – THE RED CROSS’S GIGGLE AID RETURNS TO SHEFFIELD On Sunday 10th December Sheffield will welcome a string of comedy stars coming to the city for the Red Cross’s annual comedy fundraising gala, Giggle Aid. Giggle Aid returns for its ninth instalment on the 10 December 2017, in the premium Platinum Suite at Sheffield United FC, Bramall Lane, S2 4SU. Tickets are selling fast so don’t miss your chance to be a part of what promises to be a great night! The hugely popular event will include 3 hours of guaranteed laughs at the hands of some of comedy’s fastest rising stars. Headlining is the straight-talking Nathan Caton, well known for his appearances on Mock the Week and Live at the Apollo, and host
of his own BBC Radio 4 series ‘Can’t Tell Nathan Caton Nothing’. Nathan also recently starred in BBC3’s hilarious ‘Josh’, created and written by Josh Widdicombe. Another huge star is Tez Ilyas, who has sold out his national tour, his performances at Edinburgh Fringe and appeared on Mock the Week and Channel 4’s The Last Leg. Not only does a £20 ticket get you up close and personal to these two star acts, also performing on the evening are Christian Reilly, Tom Toal and Chris Purchase. All comedians are donating their time to raise funds so that the Red Cross can help people whose lives have been devastated by crises and disaster, in Sheffield, Yorkshire, the UK and overseas. With cabaret style seating, food and drinks available, and a raffle and auction going on throughout the night, not only does Giggle Aid promise to scratch any comedy itch, it would also make a perfect Christmas party.

Tickets just £20 per person, get them while they’re still there! Purchase online at www.redcross.org.uk/Giggle, or contact Helen Whale on 0113 201 5256, or hwhale@redcross.org.uk

STATUS QUO READY TO PLUG BLACK STAR RIDERS ROCK THE O2 ACADEMY IN AND START ROCKING In late April the band announced their longplanned ‘Aquostic’ tour of the UK and immediately found themselves with a dilemma. The shift to ‘Aquostic’ tour had been deemed necessary as the inevitable rigours of the Electric set were considered to be too much for Rick to take on. Yet demand from fans for Electric shows was undiminished. Taking into account all changed circumstances, and the band’s movement out of the cycle of the successful ‘Aquostic’ albums, a decision
Words & Pics by Roy Goodall
has been made to plug back in. The renamed ‘PLUGGED IN – Live and Rockin!’ tour will now be fully Electric. Tickets for Status Quo: Acquostic Live (subject to
booking fees) at Sheffield City Hall are available online at www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk through the ticket hotline on 0114 2 789 789 and in person at the Sheffield City Hall Box Office.
Having witnessed and met frontman and mouthpiece Ricky Warwick several times over his interesting career, either solo or in his first major band The Almighty, I was keen to see how the latest job of fronting Black Star Riders was developing. With a fine support package including the amazing British gang Tax The Heat, Sheffield didn’t provide the finest of turn outs. Maybe the near £30 price tag had something to do with it, though the loyal rock fraternity did raise their Yorkshire voices as guitars rang out to set opener All Hell Breaks Loose, quickly
followed by Finest Hour and Heavy Fire. So far so good, as I do like seeing bands knock out songs in quick succession, thus keeping the chat to a minimum. And when Ricky does converse, he does so with a degree of intelligence though sadly peppers it with the several vulgarities. Over the course of the night eighteen tunes made the rafters shake with the ever youthful looking guitarists Scott Gorham and Damon Johnson, bassist Robbie Crane and new tub thumper Chad Szeliga all engaging well and offering plenty of smiles which was nice. With three good albums now out the lads did well to cover all bases and the chemistry between each
band member seemed natural and relaxed. If I have to be hyper critical, like many frontmen Ricky swore too much and wouldn’t it have been nice to have seen the gang wear a tad more colour. I know it’s in the title but a change from the traditional black leather rock look would have been lovely. With the show almost over it was the classic Thin Lizzy cover of Whiskey In The Jar, the second Lizzy cover of the night that left us all happy to walk home with warm glows of seeing a great band doing their stuff. With this being the second time our paths have crossed, the first being Download from a few years back, I think it’s fair to say Black Star Riders have more than past the first hurdle and are now firmly driving in the right direction. Stars for the future maybe..

With a brand new production for 2017, calling in to Sheffield City Hall on Saturday 2nd December. Five legendary names take to the stage and deliver to you a night never to be forgotten. Step back in time to when pop music was at its very best. Now more than ever-the genuine article- Mike Pender is the voice of The Searchers. One of the greats to have come out of the Liverpool “Beat Boom”. His is
the rich vocal talent so evident on so many of the Hit recordings that have become 60's classics. Everybody - even if they only have a passing interest in 60's Music, remembers "Needles and Pins" - one of the greatest ever records to come out of the greatest ever period in Pop Music History! There were, of course, many other 'Hit' recordings that feature not only Mike's vocals, but also his equally distinctive 12-string 'jangly' guitar sound that became such a feature of The Searchers' recordings. With over 50 years of success in the business Mike is still touring worldwide performing The Searchers million selling hits such as Sugar and Spice, Sweets For My Sweet , Don’t Throw Your Love Away , When You Walk In The Room
and of course Needles and Pins. Originally Chris Farlowe and The Thunderbirds started out in the late fifties. Chris later moved on to perform all over Europe & still does to this day. His hits include classics like Out Of Time, Handbags and Glad Rags (which was also released by Rod Stewart as a single ) Let The Heartaches Begin, Reach Out I’ll Be There. Herman’s Hermits throughout the mid-60’s music scene proved to be a dominating force worldwide. From 1964 the band chalked up over 23 top 20 singles, 10 hit albums, 3 major movies. Hermans Hermits as of to date have sold 75,000,000 records worldwide. Their chart breaking hits include, Mrs Brown You’ve Got A Lovely Daughter, Silhouettes & I’m Into Something Good The Fortunes. PLAUDITS FROM ACADEMIA FOR LOCAL AUTHOR’S WORKING MEN’S CLUB BOOK Neil Anderson’s new ‘Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to Working Men’s Clubs’ book has been hailed as “one of the most accessible and affectionate record of the boom years of the movement ever written” by the country’s foremost expert on the subject. Dr Ruth Cherrington – celebrated academic and authority on the movement’s history – praised the high level of research that included contributions from scores of users and performers. “Neil holds nothing back” she added. “It’s a lovely, entertaining read and documents so well the fun that was offer down at our local clubs.” The ‘Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to Working Men’s Clubs’ celebrates the largely underdocumented movement that boasted over 4,000 clubs and 4 million members at its height in 1970s Britain
Neil Anderson said: “It is fantastic news the book has won praise from someone like Ruth. It has been a long process pulling it together and her endorsement is a real boost.” The countrywide Working Men’s Club movement provided the testing ground for scores of acts that went on to break into mainstream television and true stardom. ‘New Faces’, ‘Opportunity Knocks’ and ‘Wheeltappers and Shunters’ were reliant on the Working Men’s Clubs for raw talent and it’s unlikely pillars of 1980s light entertainment like Cannon & Ball, Les Dawson and Little & Large would have
enjoyed their allconquering success without the early support of Working Men’s Club audiences. The ‘Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to Working Men’s Clubs’ is packed with interviews, rare photos and more. The book is published by www.acmretro.com and retails for £13.95

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
A tricky report to write this week, especially after just getting in from a resounding blank! As usual, I’ve been out a couple of times this week, my first session in search of pike, my second hope of a carp, but both were tough… I arrived at a Staffordshire reservoir, on the Stoke-on-Trent Angling Society card, bright and early, hoping to get onto a peg I’d never fished before at the deeper end of the lake. Typically, one other angler was on the water, arriving just minutes before me, and you can guess where he set up! It turns out that the angler in question was Nigel Williams, a respected catcher of pike, former columnist in most of the angling press, and someone from whom I could no doubt learn a lot when it comes to fishing for predators. We had a brief chat, and then I moved about forty yards away to set up, a position from which I could still see Nigel, (watch and learn) but we wouldn’t get in each other’s way! I pieced together a couple of 3lb test curve Sonik SK3 rods, twinned with the usual Tournos 10000 reels, and clipped on simple deadbait rigs, each anchored with a 3oz lead, which slid up the line on a wide bore run ring to reduce resistance. On one rod, my favourite bait, a humble roach, was nicked onto the trebles, and on the other, a bright yellow smelt. Both were flung out into open water at the base of a shelf, the lines tightened, indicators clipped, and I sat back to wait… I’d noted dozens of smaller fish rippling the surface as I chatted to Nigel, so the prey fish were definitely in the area; surely it followed that the pike would be too? An hour passed, and I heard an alarm sound as a predator picked up a bait. Sadly, it wasn’t mine, and as I watched, Nigel landed, and quickly returned a chubby pike before recasting his bait. I wound in both of my baits to check them, and also recast, this time to different areas, hoping to intercept a passing fish. I try to move my baits every hour or so if I’m fishing a new area, hoping to cover as much water as possible looking for contact, and if I do hit the right spot, then I make a

note for next time. Although pike are still reasonably active, there are times when they just aren’t in the mood for chasing, but if you drop a bait on their nose, then there is always a chance they will grab it! Five hours in, I was starting to think that the session may end without success. The pike that Nigel had caught was his only one, although he lost another which grabbed his bait as he retrieved it, but he hadn’t landed any more, and if he couldn’t catch with vastly more experience, what chance had I got? Suddenly, a quick twitch of the indicator had my attention, and I watched the rod tip quiver… I unclipped the indicator, and watched the line slide off the spool once… and then stop. Seconds later, a second coil unwound, so I lifted the rod, turned the reel handle, and contacted the fish! I will not leave the bite ‘to develop’, as I know that pike can easily pick up and devour a bait without too much indication, so the second I get a bleep, I’m on it. I’d rather miss a bite, or lose a fish, than deep hook one and cause avoidable damage… it’s responsible angling. Sadly, my prize, another low double, was somewhat battered, with an old, sore looking flank wound which required treatment. I carry carp care cream for just this reason, so a liberal dose was slathered on the wound, and it was gently returned, hopefully to regain full fitness. I know it works, after catching the same fish three days apart earlier in the season, on which I’d treated a smaller scrape, and the second time saw a marked improvement; if

carp anglers can care for their captures, why can’t pike anglers too? Unfortunately, neither Nigel nor I had any further action, but at least the solitary predator had kept my run of good fortune going… A bitterly cold night, during which temperatures dropped to -3, threatened to ruin my intended carp session, but as I had a new toy to play with, I was determined to go! I suspected a tough session might be forthcoming, as the venue in question reacts very badly to abrupt changes of weather, so I wasn’t confident; on arrival, I found I was the only angler, which didn’t bode well! I set up my usual heavy method feeder, added a short hook link, and slid a piece of corn onto the hair stop. I’d packed the feeder with Spotted Fin groundbait, so if anything was going to get a bite, this was! I’d spotted a few carp rising in the early morning sun, so cast out as far as I could in the hope of picking one off in the deeper water. Once settled, I got out my new plaything… It’s a Bell Ballcutter; although it sounds uncomfortable, it’s actually a handy little implement which does exactly what it says… cuts balls! Available in a variety of sizes, the ballcutter is pressed in to the soft flesh of a tin of meat, a Pepperami stick, or cheese, potato, or whatever else you fancy, the handle is turned, and a perfectly round ball of bait is produced! It’s a great way to make a well formed hook bait, ideal for hair rigs, with the minimum of effort. It can also be used in catering or baking, but it’s found a niche in my tackle box, just so I can use it when I need something different. I did need a couple of attempts to get it right, but once mastered, it’s a handy bit of kit and can turn out uniformly sized baits, quickly, and with minimum effort. I tried all sorts of hook baits throughout the day; meat, pepperami (although I ate most of that!) cheese, (I ate most of that too!) and even reverted to 8mm wafters, but aside from a couple of bleeps, I had no interest all day… a resounding blank! I wasn’t alone though, one other angler ventured onto a nearby peg, and after an hour of freezing in a bitter wind, he too gave up, biteless, and retired to the warmth of his car. By the time I’d sat for seven hours, I’d had enough too, so packed up and went home… there is always next week! Find the Bell Ball Cutter at www.bellballcutter. com

After last weeks’ County Cup action, the County Senior League returned in full flow for week 14, with a full fixture list. Premier Division Premier Division leaders Grimethorpe Sports made it an unbeaten 10 game start to the season with an impressive 6-0 away win over struggling Denaby Main. Joseph Oliver starred for Grimethorpe, scoring four times. AFC Penistone Church Reserves made it four straight victories in all competitions, with 1-0 away win over Oughtibridge WMFC. Penistone remain in second, just three points off the pace. Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves were held to their first draw of the season at Frecheville. The game ended 2-2, but the point was enough to see Stocksbridge into third place on goal difference. Jubilee Sports made it three consecutive victories, with a 1-0 away win over Handsworth Parramore Reserves. Jordan Livett once again proved the difference for Jubilee with the only goal. A Ryan Hallsworth hat-trick for Wombwell Main helped Wombwell claimed the bragging rights in a Barnsley derby with Houghton Main at Middlecliffe Lane. Hallsworth’s hat-trick made it 3-1 to Wombwell, who climb into seventh position. Swinton Athletic, who scored eight last time out in the cup against Houghton Main, scored six on Saturday, as they beat Millmoor Juniors 6-1 at Mexborough Athletic Ground. Two goals from Carey Welford helped North Gawber Colliery a point at Denaby United, as it ended 2-2 at Old Road. Steven Ellor and Ainsley Finney were both on target for Denaby. Division One Division One leaders Dodworth Miners Welfare made it eight straight victories, with a 4-1 away win over third placed High Green Villa. Impressively Dodworth have a 100% record and a plus 26 goal difference. Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves are now Dodworth’s nearest challengers, after they won 2-1 away against Sheffield Medics. Hemsworth are six points off the pace, but have played a game less than their rivals. AFC Dronfield climbed into fourth place, with a 4-3 victory over Brinsworth Whitehill at Gosforth Playing Fields. Goals from Sean Ebbs and Christopher Lovett gave Kiveton Park a 2-0 win over Caribbean Sports at Wales High School. Kiveton are up to fifth place with the three points. Just like the Reserves, Stocksbridge Park Steels Development drew 2-2 away this weekend. Despite having ten men, two goals from Keegan Hepplestone helped Stocksbridge draw 2-2 with Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915. Division Two The result of the day in the County Senior League came at South Kirkby Miners Welfare, where South Kirkby Colliery Reserves beat league leaders Boynton Sports 6-1. South Kirkby had previously only won once this season in six games, but climb out of the bottom two with the victory. The day was to get worse for Boynton, who lost top spot to Swinton Athletic Reserves, who beat Manor Hotel 1-0 at home. Goals from Tom Bird, Josh Clare, Devon Garbutt and an own goal gave Wombwell Main Development a 4-0 home win over AFC Dronfield Reserves. Working Wonders climbed into third place, with a 4-3 win over Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Development. Working Wonders are just a point behind leaders Swinton. Jon Iufudu, Ahmed Tahar and Yasin Omar all scored twice for Burngreave FC, as they beat North Gawber Colliery Reserves 10-0 at Woolley Miners Welfare. Maltby Main Reserves maintained their 100% home start to the season, with a 3-0 victory over New Bohemians. Maltby have only conceded once in their opening four games at home. Thurcroft Miners Institute claimed their second point of the season, as they drew 2-2 at Firvale Academy with Caribbean Sports Reserves.

WE SHOULD HAVE HAD MORE - WARNE Millers Manager Paul Warne gave his thoughts after seeing his side suffer a late defeat at home to 10-man Shrewsbury Town this afternoon. “I’m deflated,” said Warne of the 2-1 loss. “I thought my team gave me everything they had against a very good Shrewsbury team. They’re top of the league. It’s probably one of the first games we’ve played at home where we were, possibly, the underdog. We’ve done enough to, at least come away with a point. “We’ve had more attempts on goal, not that that counts for anything, more possession, more corners, more shots on target, so I’m hugely disappointed. “I’m very disappointed with the fact we had a corner at one-all in the 93rd minute and the lad clears it, you can see the lads moved is arm towards the ball inside the box so that should have been a penalty for us. “They go up the other end and to concede like that is hugely disappointing and I’ve got to pick them up for the next game.”

Jon Nolan handed the visitors the lead 16 minutes in before his team-mate Abu Ogogo saw red eight minutes into the second half. But the Millers could have broken the deadlock themselves on 13 minutes had Kieffer Moore’s penalty not been well saved by Dean Henderson. Richie Towell then restored parity with a neat finish on 76 minutes and the tide seemed to have turned in Rotherham’s favour. “It just looked like a tackle to me,” he continued. “I don’t know if it’s two-footed, ugly, over-the-top. I can’t comment on that. All our staff didn’t see it. I don’t know if that helped us or not. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn’t. They were really resilient and defended well with 10 men. “It took a good goal from Richie Towell to get us back in the game. I was hopeful with two up front and trying to get crosses in the box. I felt their ‘keeper was pretty outstanding, in that respect it’s frustrating.” The winning goal came deep into stoppagetime from Stefan Payne after the striker found the ball at his feet from a corner. “We were on top. Frecks and Kieffer both go for the ball, the lad who Frecks was marking went into a pocket and the ricochet comes through to him, one touch and finish. We set up right for the corner but it’s just an individual error. It’s hugely frustrating, we were on the back of a last-minute goal last week. Today we leave the stadium feeling pretty low. “It was a top-of-the-table clash, so to speak. To lose it in the last minute, I don’t think my players deserved that today.” Speaking on the missed penalty by Moore, Warne said: “I can’t say that every week. If Woody’s goal would have gone in at Donny, the game would have taken a different path. It’s always important to get the first goal.”

PROFESSIONAL DEAL Rotherham United can confirm that Academy forward Joshua Kayode has penned his first professional contract with the club, signing a deal which will see him remain with the Millers until the summer of 2020. Kayode was handed his senior debut as a second half substitute in the clash with Manchester City in the Checkatrade Trophy earlier this season and was involved with Paul Warne’s side again in the same competition at Bradford City. The 17-year-old has impressed in the club’s youth ranks over the last couple of seasons and has been a regular on the scoresheet for Garreth Barker’s side, who achieved a second placed finish in the Youth Alliance League with Kayode a key figure in 2016/17. Rotherham United Academy manager Barker expressed his pride at seeing another player graduate to the senior setup after Ben Wiles signed a professional deal in the summer.
“It’s great to see another player make the step up and it is a fitting reward for all of the hard work that JJ has put in over the last couple of years,” he told www.themillers.co.uk. “He has been our main attacking threat in a very good unit and I am delighted that the manager has seen enough in him to offer him a pro deal. “With the current first team staff, there is a clear pathway from the Academy to the first team and it really ensures that the boys are at their best every single day. “It has been brilliant from an Academy perspective to see the likes of Akeem Hinds and Reece McGinley involved this season and equally pleasing to see the progress that Ben Wiles has made since being fully immersed in a first team environment. “JJ is a great lad and has acquitted himself brilliantly both in the first team and reserves games that he has been involved in, so I’m thrilled to see him turn professional.”
POINT GAINED IN TRICKY WRIGHT ENJOYS FORMATION CONDITIONS FOR FERGUSON
Manager Darren Ferguson was delighted with his Rovers side after they gained a well-deserved point on the road against Fleetwood Town despite tricky conditions on the Fylde coast. Uwe Rosler’s side, play-off semi-finalists in 2016/17, proved to be a stern test for Ferguson’s men, but he was happy with the way his side came through the game. “We were solid, disciplined and very well organised, it was a very tight game with two very well organised teams, but we feel that we had the better chances in the game and we could have three points out of that,” Ferguson said. “We almost got caught out in the first half, but we dealt with them well and in the second half we had three great opportunities to get the win, we’re unlucky not to get the win but it’s not a bad result. “The wind played a big part as it normally does here, but we’ve kept a clean sheet and we’re looking good at both ends of the pitch, it’s something we’re working on and we are improving.” John Marquis and Rodney Kongolo both went close in the closing stages of the game, but Ferguson was happy with the way his side ground out a point on the road, and he will be hoping that his men can take their good form into the next few games. “You’ve seen two sets of players that gave everything today, and that was a team that made the play-offs last season and they’ll

expect to be there again this season, so it’s a good point on reflection,” he said. “We need the game to open up and if we get the first goal then we can make a difference and we have to get positive results, but we have been more consistent and we are coming up against some tough sides in the next few weeks. “I’ve got some good players on my bench, and there’s players that have played a lot of games too, I’ve got a lot of options but we will make sure we recover properly ahead of Tuesday night.” Rovers face MK Dons in Sky Bet League One on Saturday 25 November, get your tickets now from tickets.clubdoncaster. co.uk.
Defender Joe Wright says that the current Rovers formation helps him add an extra dimension to his game following the 0-0 draw with Fleetwood Town in Sky Bet League One. Wright accompanied Andy Butler and Mathieu Baudry in a back three and the Welshman says that having a player like Butler alongside him helps develop as a player. “Myself, Butler and Baudry are building up a strong relationship up at the back, the wingbacks help us out too and it is a formation that is helping to get the best out of us going forward,” said Wright. “Having someone like Butler in your ear helps, it helps the whole team actually and that can only be a good thing, Jordan Houghton and Rodney Kongolo provide that extra cover as well. “This formation allows you to add an extra
dimension to your game, it allows you to do some 1v1 defending which is good sometimes and it is really helping me develop as a player.” Darren Ferguson’s side became the first team to stop Fleetwood scoring at home in Sky Bet League One this season and Wright says that Rovers were unlucky not to pick up all three points. “I think we had the best chances in the game and I think they only created chances through some of our mistakes really but overall we cancelled them out,” he said. “John Marquis never stopped chasing their back line down, he ran himself into the ground and you could see at the end of the game that he was tired to be fair to him. “Their keeper has pulled off two fantastic saves in the second half both to deny John, he was unlucky not to score today and on another day he probably scores both of those chances.”

WILDER REFLECTS ON BITTERSWEET VICTORY An injury to Paul Coutts led to a subdued post-match reaction following the Friday night victory at the Pirelli Stadium. Chris Wilder said there was a ‘bittersweet’ taste following Friday’s win at Burton Albion that saw the Blades go back to the top of the Championship. United’s 3-1 success at the Pirelli Stadium saw them leapfrog Wolves at the summit of the division, but it came
at a big cost, with Paul Coutts suffering a suspected broken leg. Speaking in the aftermath of the win over Nigel Clough’s side, Wilder remarked: “It looks like Paul has broken his leg unfortunately. It’s a penalty first and foremost, but the bigger issue is the leg break Paul appears to have suffered. “It’s a bittersweet taste really because we’ve produced an outstanding first-half performance against a
side that have beaten some big teams at the Pirelli and one that has battled ever so hard to stay in the division for the last season and a bit. “So to come to Burton and produce that performance and to see the game out to get the win that takes us to the top of the Championship again means we should be jumping through hoops, but we’re not and out thoughts are with Paul.” Wilder added: “At
half-time, we said he is a pal and an extremely talented player and the lads were there when it happened. “But we’re a committed side, we’re competitive and we run about, so these things could happen and unfortunately it’s happened to Paul, we can’t change what we’re about. “I won’t allow that to happen, we were flatter in the secondhalf but we thoroughly deserved the victory in the end.”
O’CONNELL LATEST TO SIGN LONG-TERM DEAL Jack O’Connell has signed a new fourand-a-half-year deal with the Blades. The popular 23-yearold is now contracted at Bramall Lane until the end of the 2021/22 campaign. The Liverpoolborn defender, who joined the Blades from Brentford in the summer of 2016, became a cult hero with the United faithful during last season’s recordbreaking League One title winning campaign and has acquitted himself excellently back in the Championship. He has amassed 67 appearances and six goals in United’s colours so far. Boss Chris Wilder is delighted to see the defender commit his future to the club, remarking: “Jack hasn’t just impressed me, he has impressed everybody at the club

with his performances and he is a very important player for us who has done fantastically well. “He came from Brentford’s reserves and was terrific last season. He’s adapted to the step up to the Championship and has been outstanding for this term.” On his new deal, O’Connell added: “Once the Gaffer spoke about me signing a new deal, I agreed straight away, it was a no-brainer. “I only see myself improving here and continuing to progress my career. This is a big club, we have an excellent group of
players who are all winners and a terrific staff who know how to get the best of us.” O’Connell becomes the eighth player to sign a contract extension in recent months, emphasising United’s desire to reward impressive performances. In July, skipper Billy Sharp, vice-captain Paul Coutts, Chris Basham and Kieron Freeman penned new terms following promotion and more recently John Fleck and young prospects David Brooks and Jake Eastwood have also signed long-term deals.
PAUL COUTTS UPDATE
LUNDSTRAM’S CHANCE TO SHINE
Sheffield United can confirm that Paul Coutts suffered a fractured tibia in Friday evening's victory over Burton Albion. The midfielder was stretchered off in the Sky Bet Championship encounter at the Pirelli Stadium. He will have an operation over the weekend but is likely to miss the remainder of the season.

WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH
A common football theory is that a team has an increased chance of achieving its objectives if the squad can stay relatively injury free. Chris Wilder has not had it easy in this department, and just when the situation was beginning to improve, Paul Coutts suffered a fractured tibia bone against Burton Albion. Already this term, the amount of United players who have picked up an injury is in double figures. Simon Moore, Clayton Donaldson, Richard Stearman, Caolan Lavery and Ched Evans have all had to face up to long term injuries. However, the Coutts injury will hurt more than any other so far this season. We all know how superb the midfielder’s performances have been. His ability to connect the defence with the attack has been a huge part of the United’s success. Coutts does a simple job very well, gone are the days when former managers asked for pace and trickery down the right-hand side. All eyes now turn to John Lundstram. The 23-year-old has largely had to watch from the sidelines this season. Stepping into Coutts’ position has been difficult for the midfielder, but it would be
unfair to expect such consistency. There are eight games to be played before the January transfer window opens. Those will likely serve as an audition for Lundstram. If he can step up and support United’s promotion bid then the need to spend a few million on a midfielder would be decreased. Should he fail to convince Wilder and his staff then the club may have to assess the transfer market. The former-Everton youth player obviously has a huge amount of talent. You don’t become an England U-20 player by mistake. This is his opportunity to prove he can be a mainstay during the important months of the season.

CONTROL WHAT WE CAN Carlos Carvalhal has stressed the importance of focusing only on what his side can control as the Owls head towards a busy schedule of fixtures. The head coach says that despite not getting the rub of the green this season with a string of contentious decisions, the SWFC camp will concentrate on what lies in their hands. He told swfc.co.uk: “As a coach and as players, we can only control what we can do, everything else does not belong to us. “We have been denied a lot of points this season with decisions that have not been correct. “This is something I do
not like to talk about but this season, when there have been so many, I must talk. “On Saturday, we had two clear penalties refused, it is clear they were both penalties to Jordan Rhodes and Barry Bannan. “At Birmingham there are 20 minutes to go and Gary Hooper scores a goal, a very good goal, that was onside. “At Bolton Kieran Lee is very clearly tripped in the penalty area. Kieran Lee is not a player who dives, I have never seen him do this, ever, and we do not get the penalty. “At Derby, we take a red card and a penalty then in a very similar
situation with Steven Fletcher we did not get anything. “We had a very good goal disallowed against Leeds against Kieran Lee for offside but thankfully we won the game. “I do not suggest anything is wrong because I am here working in the country of the home of football and I have 100% respect for everyone. “But I talk about only the facts and the facts are that we would have at least seven more points and we would be in third position before this very important part of the season.”
NOT FAR AWAY The Owls face a double-header on the road this week, starting with a long trip to Ipswich on Wednesday. As things stand, and despite having plenty to contend with, Carlos Carvalhal’s side are two points outside of the top six. With eight points from the last four games, including wins over Aston Villa and Millwall and a clean sheet against in-form Bristol City, Carlos said: “To put the things more difficult, we bring in George Boyd and we don’t have him available. “Sam Hutchinson is an important player to
us and is not playing. Kieran Lee is an important player but at this moment is not 100%. “And Fernando Forestieri is a player with 15 and 12 goals from last two seasons and is out of the team to add to this.
“We must put everything on the table to try to understand everything and yet, we are two points from the sixth place with all these kind of things. “We understand we are not far away and we are in a good way to fight to achieve a good position.”
WESTWOOD REACHES CLEAN SHEET MILESTONE Keiren Westwood racked up his 50th clean sheet for the Owls in Saturday’s draw with Bristol City at Hillsborough. The Ireland international shot stopper joined Wednesday in the summer of 2014 and did not take long to get his

first shutout for the club. An opening day 1-0 victory away at Brighton on his debut was the first of his half century. During his tenure between the sticks, Wednesday have twice matched their clean sheet record over a season. Well done Keiren!
