fun at clifton park this christmas Clifton Park Museum has a number of events happening over the Christmas period. Come along on Saturday 9 December for the Twelve Days of Christmas event, a day of festive fun for the whole family including Christmas carols performed by a local children’s choir. Activities include festive treats cooked in the Museum’s Victorian Kitchen, plus children’s crafts for three to eleven years, including ‘angel making’. Craft-making costs £2.50. No booking is required and drop in anytime between
11am and 4pm. Visit Father Christmas and receive a special present for £5 per child. On the same date, adults can make their own Christmas wreaths at one of the museum’s workshops. Workshops take place from 10am until 1pm, and 2pm until 5pm. Tickets cost £18 per person and includes all materials, a hot drink and a mince pie or, for an extra £4, enjoy a glass of prosecco. Places must be booked in advance. On Tuesday 12 December, little ones can join in with the festivities with the museum’s very special toddler
Christmas craft workshop. Let your little ones have fun with paint, sticking and gluing as they make their own little Christmas decorations. Suitable for children aged one to four-years-old. Workshops run from 10.30am until 12 noon and from 1pm until 2.30pm. The event costs £2.50 per child and places must be booked in advance. On Wednesday 13 December step back in time and join the museum’s servants on a tour of Clifton House as they prepare it for Christmas Day. Come and discover who lived

at the House, enjoy some tasty Victorian delights and take a look at the history behind some of our most loved festive traditions. The event costs £12.50 and includes Victorian inspired refreshments and the chance to make and take home a Christmas cracker. Tours start at 6pm, 7pm and 8pm and places must be booked in advance. On Sunday 10 December, Boston Castle will also host seasonal craft activities, suitable for three to elevenyear-olds. After the craft activities have finished, visitors can
have fun following the festive trail around the castle. Craft making costs £2.50 per child and you can drop in anytime between
11am and 3pm. No booking required. Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Working and Cultural Services Cllr Taiba
Yasseen said: “We are very lucky we have two beautiful historical locations in which to host these very special Christmas events and
I would encourage anyone to come along and take part in the seasonal activities to get you into the festive spirit.”

help the homeless this christmas John Lewis, Virgin Money and McDonalds have joined a local campaign to help vulnerable people on the street, supported by twenty different organisations. As part of the Help Us Help Christmas campaign, staff from the organisations will be at the Christmas market in the city centre giving information about how the public can help for the best. The Help Us Help Christmas stall will run from Thursday 30 November to Wednesday 6 December in front of the Peace Gardens. The businesses are joining local charities and Sheffield City Council to call for people to donate canned food, gloves, hats and scarves and toiletries
to charities that help rough sleepers and people who beg. Holly Garforth, who works at Virgin Money, said: “We are raising awareness and collecting a range of items on behalf of extremely good causes who all come under the Help Us Help umbrella. They play such an important part in our local community and do a lot to help those sleeping rough in and around Sheffield. We look forward to welcoming you to the stall and explaining how you can really help to make a difference this Christmas.” Help Us Help is a collaboration between different services who support people who are sleeping rough or
begging. It advises that the best ways to help are to: 1. Give time or donations to charity, rather than directly to someone who begs. 2. Give food or drink rather than money. 3. Have a chat with someone and encourage them to access support services. 4. Buy a Big Issue North as vendors are working, not begging, and need public support. 5. Find out more about Help us help and get involved at www. helpushelp.uk Tim Renshaw, Chief Executive of the Cathedral Archer Project, said: “People end up on the street for a variety of different reasons and bad luck, and they often have
very complex problems. Services across Sheffield work together to support them and help people make positive changes and move towards a better life. We know people want to help, and we set up Help Us Help to encourage this.” Sheffield BID has provided financial support for the campaign. Diane Jarvis, BID manager said: “Sheffield BID is proud to support Help Us Help. This is an excellent opportunity for businesses and individuals across Sheffield to get involved in supporting Help Us Help for the benefit of the city centre as a whole. Many businesses already have initiatives in place to support those begging on the street so we know that
the business community will get fully behind this project.” Councillor Jayne Dunn said: “We’re part of Help Us Help to raise awareness and encourage people to get involved in supporting rough sleepers and people who beg. A single organisation cannot tackle the problems alone. And it’s not easy – we can work with people for months, and even years, before anything might change. But we’re here for them when they need it, as are the other services. It’s amazing to see so many charities, services, businesses and volunteers working together to help vulnerable people on the street, and spreading the word about Help Us Help and what you can do to help for the best.”

Cross can help people whose lives have been devastated by crises and disaster, in Sheffield, Yorkshire, the UK and overseas. It’s an exclusive chance to see some great comedians, and what’s better than laughing for a good cause?’ With cabaret style seating, food and drinks available, and a raffle and auction going on throughout the night, not only does Giggle Aid promise to scratch any comedy itch, it would also make a perfect Christmas party. ALBERT SNODGRASS
I’ve just inherited some dried grapes. I’ve put them in my currant account. Women only say that I’m ugly until they find out how much money I make.. Then they say that I’m ugly and poor. My mate just phoned me and said he’s dating a girl with a six foot neck. I said, “You’re having a giraffe!” I just slipped on the floor of the local library... I was in the non-friction section. Why are mountains so funny? Because they’re hill areas. This guy just tried to throw dough, cheese, and tomatoes at me, I said, “You wanna pizza me?” Good news at last for insomniacs. Only 5 sleeps til Christmas. I told my dad to embrace his mistakes. He gave me a hug. I don’t mean to brag, but just completed my daughter’s jigsaw in under 1 hour. It says 5-6 yrs on the box. I got sacked from PC World today. A guy came in the store and asked me what was the best thing to finding your ancestors and I said a shovel. I spent ages trying to cross a busy road & passer-by said, “There’s a pelican crossing up the road”. I said “I hope he’s having better luck than me”. What do you call a laughing motorcycle? A Yamahaha I asked the wife what she wanted for Christmas “some chocolate and a nice surprise would be lovely” she replied. Kinder egg it is then.

It seems like in the current world of comedy, you can’t go far without hearing the name Tez Ilyas. He took Edinburgh Fringe by storm, has been all over TV on The Last Leg and Mock the Week, and has just announced his 2018 tour TEZTIFY following on from his sellout Tez Talks. On 22 November, Tez was on the sofa alongside Maya Jama on I’m A Celebrity’s follow up show Extra Camp. The show is hugely popular, hosted by previous winners Scarlett Moffatt and Joe Swash, and runner up Joel Dommett. Now, people of Sheffield can catch an exclusive performance from Tez at the British Red Cross’ annual comedy night Giggle Aid. Returning for its ninth instalment on 10 December 2017, in the premium Platinum Suite at Sheffield United FC, Bramall Lane, Giggle Aid is bringing a string of comedy stars to the Steel City. The hugely popular event will include three hours of guaranteed laughs at the hands of some of comedy’s fastest rising stars. Headlining is the straighttalking Nathan Caton, well known for his hilarious appearances on Mock the Week and Live at the Apollo, and host of his own BBC Radio 4 series ‘Can’t Tell Nathan Caton Nothing’. Not only does a £20 ticket get you up close and personal to these two star acts, also performing on the evening are Christian Reilly, Tom Toal and Chris Purchase. All comedians are donating their time to raise funds so that the Red

3 things to put in your will bogus bailiffs
Wills aren’t always the cheeriest topic, but when done right, they can be funny and personal – rather than just a drab legal document. Here we look at three things we should all consider including: 1. Funeral Wishes Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry wanted his ashes sent into space. You can use your will to design your own send-off and make sure you do it in style – from full Viking funerals, to the woman who wanted her ashes kept in a portable urn so she could be taken out for parties. Only 1 in 8 people know their loved ones’ funeral wishes, so putting them down in a will can save your family a lot of stress and worry when the time comes. 2. Messages You can also use your will to leave a final message for the world, or for specific people. Like the man who left a bike to a friend, along with a very rude, personal message. Or the woman who left a major appliance to her daughter, along with a direction not to register it with the manufacturer, as it had fallen into her hands from the back of a passing lorry. Harry Houdini left a code that he said he would use to contact his wife from the afterlife. She held annual séances for ten years after his death, but Harry
never showed up. Maybe he was busy letting other dead celebs punch him in the stomach. Or maybe he just had terrible coverage in the afterlife. We’ll probably never know. 3. Gifts You can also use your will to leave gifts to loved ones, charities, pets, or even total strangers. A Portuguese aristocrat left his fortune to 70 complete strangers he picked at random from a Lisbon phone directory. Shakespeare famously left his “second best bed” to his wife. Ice cold. Irene Curie, daughter of Marie Curie, must have been a bit surprised to learn her mum had left her a gram of pure radium, so that Irene could have “… entire liberty to use this gram . . . according to the conditions under which her scientific researches shall be pursued.” Overall, a shocking 97% of us either need to make or update our wills, and when we do, it’s a good idea to go beyond the legals. If it’s something you’ve been meaning to do for a while, try Farewill, who specialise in making wills personal, plus they do everything online – so you can save yourself a trip to the solicitor.
People in South Yorkshire are being warned to be wary of a rise in scam calls from ‘Bogus Bailiffs’ in the run up to Christmas this year. The police have received an increase in reports of calls from alleged bailiffs working on behalf of a court demanding sums of money for an unspecified (and non-existent) debt. The ‘Bogus Bailiffs’ have been trying to get people to part with their money by threatening to turn up at their residence or workplace and demanding the cash in person. A spokesman commented : “People in Yorkshire should be wary of the scare-mongering tactics being used by scammers and not feel threatened in to making a payment that isn’t owed. We would advise people to be fully aware of their financial situations this Christmas so that they cannot be tricked in to thinking they owe money when in fact they don’t.” According to the Centre for Retail Research, UK consumers spent almost £80 billion at Christmas last year. With this kind of money available, the lead up to Christmas is one of the busiest times of the year for scammers. “In the run up to Christmas, opportunistic scammers are always on the look out for the next way to target victims. With more people at home around Christmas and with people having cash reserves saved up from the rest of the year, scammers often try to manipulate these circumstances to their advantage and use them to steal money from innocent people over the festive period. The public should be extra vigilant over the Christmas period and as always we would advise people not to give out any personal and/or financial information to an unsolicited caller. People who receive any suspicious calls should report them to the Information Commissioners Office.

Wedding Guide
Getting married in the cold? Fortunately for the bride, current fashions are in your favour! Full sleeved frocks are bang on trend for 2017. Laced vintage style sleeves are a particularly popular style at the moment. Complement your wedding dress with a fabulous white fur wrap or a feathered bolero. Or, if you really feel the cold why not make a bold statement with a bright red winter coat, or a contrasting velvet jacket? When choosing your wedding shoes, opt for something enclosed; peep toes won’t cut it in the snow! Alternatively, if you’re not brave enough to sport heels in frosty conditions, there are some beautiful wedding boots on the market which are both practical and elegant.
Winter Wedding Wonderland
Draping yourself in diamonds will ensure you sparkle and shine on your big day. Think delicate tiaras and cascading earrings. And don’t forget your bridesmaids. Fur muffs are a fantastic accessory. Not only will they keep your bridesmaids’ hands warm, they will also work really well with the winter wonderland theme. Whatever you choose, a winter wedding is a fantastic opportunity to experiment with luxurious fabrics such as white velvet and faux fur. Sparkling jewels, silvers and gold really complement this theme too. When organising
a winter wedding remember to pick your venue carefully; try not to choose a room with too many windows, as a drafty room will make for unhappy guests! Check that the venue will have adequate heating, as no-one can predict winter temperatures. An ideal winter wedding venue will feature roaring open fires and seasonal decorations. Celebrate the festive period with floral arrangements made up of reds and greens, or inseason flowers such as tulips or roses. Pillar candles, and twinkling lights are also lovely, and silver, gold, and white are perfect colour schemes to
complement your winter wedding ideas. Greet your guests with a warming drink when they arrive, such as mulled wine or hot chocolate, and provide blankets in accordance with your colour theme; it’s a special touch that will be appreciated by your guests on a cold day! Remember, a winter wedding can be charming and elegant, despite the risk of freezing temperatures and snowy conditions. Embrace the wintry theme and enjoy your day whatever the weather!

wulfman hit the road with their new set
LIVE REVIEW by ROY GOODALL THE WASHINGTON, SHEFFIELD. Being holed up in rehearsal rooms for an age has done Sheffield garage indie rock unit Wulfman Fury the world of good as they unleashed their music to the packed Sheffield venue, and this was only their second gig! Opening with Help Yourself followed quickly by Casanova the boys were up and running with little space for breath as the crowd cheered them on. Familiar to some, first single Nightsweats was next which again was very full on and catchy, as were most of the nine songs played. This talented five some have worked hard behind the scenes and received good audience support for their self-penned tunes, which is always a big ask unless you’ve worked well with your
following, which Wulfman Fury seemed to have done. The second single release Draw The Line soon came, which for me really was the set’s strongest tune with fellow guitarist and vocalist Joe Moran adding even more vocal depth than normal. Frontman George Moran, on lead vocals and guitar really has improved his graft no end since I first saw his talents about a decade ago, no doubt helped by a stint as Miles Kane’s guitarist, a job that took him on a world tour several years ago. With fellow band members David Mitchell, Will Severs and Steve Harrison Wulfman Fury really did good business as set closer Lucy brought the night to a close. As a treat for their audience I’d have liked to have seen a couple of covers chucked in at the end, thus making
the short set that little bit longer and maybe frontman George could have worn something colourful, just to stand out a little, as everyone else wore black and the venue lighting wasn’t that great. On a major plus note,
Wulfman Fury filled The Washington! After this very powerful performance if they carry on in this vein a bright future could be on the cards for Sheffield’s latest musical export. And it all started here…

uk no. 1 tribute act lorrie brown returns home in december Local producers Groovy Gazza Productions are finishing their 40 date national tour of Sincerely Yours. the Vera Lynn Story, at the Sheffield City Hall ballroom on Sun Dec 17th at 1.30pm. But on Dec 8th they are appealing for any fans of the forces sweetheart to come along and record a message, which will be presented to Dame Vera at the end of the tour. The show has been touring the UK since March 24th, just after Dame Vera’s 100th birthday on the 20th March. The show made its first appearance at the historic City Varieties in Leeds. Since then they have travelled from Glasgow down
to Cornwall. The shows producer Gary Birtles says, ‘It has been an amazing year, we have literally travelled the length and breadth of the country and met some amazing people, many with personal memories of Dame Vera. The one that stands out is the gentleman we met who was a driver out in Burma when the young Vera Lynn was performing to the troops. He used to drive the troops from the front line to go and watch her perform and then drive them back, thats how close she was to the fighting and just goes to show what an incredibly brave young lady she was. I think this is why the troops have
taken her to their hearts, because she went that extra mile to entertain them’ The show has been endorsed by Dame Vera and works closely with her charity, ‘The Dame Vera Lynn Childrens Charity’ Gary says, ‘Her fans have been so generous, we have raised over £7000 so far for the charity. They do some amazing work for children under 5 with cerebral palsy. Lorrie Brown performs the role of Vera Lynn and was invited to meet Dame Vera after winning a national tribute award. Lorrie says, ‘We spoke to Dame Vera when we had the idea
for the show and she was thrilled that we would be singing some of her early songs people don’t always associate with her. She was a big star before the war and was outselling Bing Crosby. When the war started she thought her career would be over, everyone knows the rest. In the show we follow her career and show why she became the forces sweetheart. Its been such a pleasure performing in this show and meeting her fans who have so many memories of her.’ As a final tribute to Dame Vera, Gary and Lorrie have been collecting messages from her fans after the shows and recently

We also recorded a message from the Mayor of Rotherham, Cllr Eve Keenan. In June I was performing at the Rotherham Armed Forces and Veterans Day event in Rotherham town centre and the Mayor was there, that was an amazing moment, just as I was coming to the end of my act I was singing There’ll Always Be An

are you Prepared for Winter Roads?
As the nights draw in and the temperature starts to plummet, driving on the roads can become increasingly difficult and hazardous. To stay safe, it’s important to adjust your driving style according to the weather conditions, and carry out the necessary vehicle checks before you venture out. These are our top tips and advice to help you tackle the big freeze from behind the wheel. Are your tyres are suitable for winter conditions. All-season tyres will not perform at their best in extremely cold conditions. Winter tyres are designed to be flexible in extreme cold, providing a better grip on snow and ice. Although not mandatory by law, they’re a great way to help keep you safe in icy conditions, especially in rural areas. Top up your coolant with antifreeze The coolant should be a 50/50 split between water and anti-freeze, but this can dilute over time. This can result in freezing and potential damage to the engine, so ensure your coolant is at the correct level before making any journeys during winter.

Defrosting your windscreen The best and safest way to clear your windscreen is to use a scraper and de-icer. Starting the engine, switching on the heated rear screen and mirrors, and allowing air-conditioned air to circulate to gently warm the glass also helps speed up the process. Ensure you don’t leave your car on its own with the keys in the ignition, and double check that your windscreen and all windows are fully defrosted before you drive off. Get set for longer journeys It’s important to plan your journey and be prepared for any adverse conditions that might make driving difficult. Check the weather, traffic news and safest routes before you begin your journey, and make sure you have warm clothes and food packed, should you break down. Prepare a winter car breakdown kit Winter car breakdown kits are essential to carry in your boot during the colder months. A range of kits are available, with most including a high-vis vest, snow shovel, torch and thermal blankets. Other recommended items also include snow grips for your shoes, non-perishable food and drink supplies, and a phone charger, in case you break down. Check your breakdown cover Fully comprehensive breakdown cover is vital. Before you venture out on the roads, double check exactly what you are covered for. Download a weather app Download a weather app to your phone and double check you won’t encounter any wintery conditions during your journey. If you think you might encounter particularly bad weather, it is worth postponing your trip until conditions have improved.

Angler’s Corner
with Clint Walker
I love reading through old angling books, many from the 1960’s and 70’s, catching up on tales which have made history, but sometimes, when I see what is being used, I cringe; thankfully, things have come a long way since then, and looking after your catch has become much easier, and thankfully, expected… I look back at when I first started fishing, some 36 years ago, and realise that now, fish care is at the forefront of most (sadly not all) angler’s minds when they seek out big fish, but I still see some woefully ill prepared to deal with a decent fish, and in truth, some anglers still put catching above caring, which is terrifically sad… So, what has changed? Gone are the days of knotted landing and keepnets. No longer do we see coarsely meshed nets which acted like cheese graters, stripping scales and cracking fins; keepnets have to be at least six feet long, and all landing nets are now constructed with super soft, knotless mesh which is far better for fish, and far easier to keep clean to prevent the spread of waterborne diseases. Unhooking mats are now available to prevent damage to flanks and fins, enabling the fish to remain protected from unseen hazards in long grass, and ‘carp care’ kits now seem to be the norm on many fisheries. One of the things I’m really glad to see the back of is the pike gag; what a monstrosity that thing was! Spring loaded, and designed to force open the jaws of the unfortunate pike, it took no account of the size of fish, and could cause huge damage when jammed between the teeth of the unfortunate beast… thankfully, for most anglers, things have moved on… But why is it important to be prepared? Well, fish welfare is of course paramount to any selfrespecting angler. I know we all catch them by means of a sharp hook, but mitigating damage, and promoting recovery, should be at the front of every angler’s mind when on the bank. If it isn’t at the forefront of your angling, then please take up golf… Before you fish, be prepared; it’s that simple, and there really is no excuse. An unhooking mat, thickly padded, should be one of your first purchases. I’ve lost count of the number of anglers I’ve seen with expensive rods and reels, who spend a fortune on bait, in order to catch the largest resident in the lake, but have absolutely nothing with which to care for the fish! A decent mat can be bought for less

than £20, and anything is better than nothing. Many fisheries now insist on a mat or cradle, and if you haven’t got one, then quite rightly, you’re not allowed to fish. Personally, I have at least four mats; a cheap roll up one for light lure fishing when perch are my target, a wide, padded mat for bream and tench, a zip up pad for my pike fishing, and a huge, soft cradle with walls to prevent frisky specimen carp bouncing all over the place, and none of them have broken the bank, or any of my captures! It’s unfortunately inevitable, that during the ensuing tussle with a fish, that a scale may be damaged, the tail may be scraped, and during spawning, you may notice many cuts and grazes caused by their amorous endeavours. Thankfully, many companies now supply a number of products to treat such injuries, ranging from small sprays to thicker creams, which can be applied to encourage healing, and protect from infection. They can be dabbed on with cotton buds, smeared with a finger, and sprayed over the area, but all have the same purpose. Admittedly, some are expensive, and don’t necessarily work better than others, but anglers have been using Bonjela for years too, a cheap alternative which really should form part of your kit. I use Vardis Tackle Carp Care Cream, a lanoline based product which I’m confident enough to use on myself too. Many times, I’ve nicked a finger on a pike’s tooth, or scuffed a knuckle on sharp gill rakers, or even, when I got a size 8 barbed in my middle finger, once wrenched free with forceps, the cream was applied to stop the bleeding, and keep it clean! Get some! Tools are another thing I see lacking sometimes. Novice pike anglers, excited by their first foray into the predator world, often neglect to consider what they are going to do when they actually hook one, bank it, and then have an angry crocodile thrashing in the net whilst they look on forlornly, unable to remove a deeply embedded treble! I can’t stress enough the need to be ‘tooled up’ when pike fishing! A bare minimum pike kit should consist of long forceps, long nosed pliers, and most importantly, side cutter pliers to snip any hook which needs it. Unhooking pike can be a tricky evolution, especially if you get your bite indication wrong, so be properly prepared, and don’t forget to take spares; don’t chance it if you’ve misplaced your forceps. I don’t use a glove either, preferring to feel exactly where my hand is under the gill plate, but it’s all about confidence… if it goes wrong, I’ve got plasters, and carp care cream! What else? Nets should be considered as part of your fish care. It’s no good angling for big fish with a small net, and any net you do use should be deep enough, and wide enough, to fully support your catch. Nets with removable arms will help safely transport your fish from the water to the waiting unhooking mat, and back again, but it’s important to ensure that your prize is properly laid out, with fins against the body, not folded beneath where they are likely to snap, before the fish is lifted, so take a few seconds to check. Try not to weigh your fish in the net, but instead use a dedicated weigh sling which will ensure the fish is laid out properly, fully support the weight, and negate the chance of fins or scales being damaged. It’s extra expense, but worth it. Keepnets; I rarely use a keepnet, unless I have to get a particular shot for a magazine feature or similar, but even then, try to retain

as few fish as possible, and will often spread them between a couple of nets so I can be sure there is enough room to circulate freely. I may alienate a few readers here, but I disagree completely with match anglers putting large carp into keepnets, and then tumbling them down the net into the weigh baskets at the end of the session to rest on each other, further compressing their delicate structures. What makes it worse is that they pose for the ‘catch shot’ with a rubberised bag of large fish, resting on a gravel or concrete bank! I’ve lost count of the amount of fish I’ve seen with torn dorsal fins, smashed pectorals, and damaged flanks caused in this way, but as I mentioned, some put catching before caring… sorry about that. Time is also an important consideration when fishing; your catch should be out of the water for the absolute minimum amount of time. This means getting set up properly to remove, unhook, protect and photograph your fish, before returning it safely. It helps to get your camera tripod set up, with a few test shots fired, so you know exactly where to kneel when you take your picture. It’s no good catching your big fish, then messing about setting it up, it needs to be done before you get the bite, so it’s ready to go! Lay out your unhooking mat, tools, and care kit, set up the tripod, unfurl your landing net, and be sure it’s all in place before you cast out! I’ve known anglers drag fish down the bank to my swim to borrow my landing net as they haven’t pieced theirs together before fishing! You also need to give your fish time to recover. A few minutes resting in the margin in the net, or if needs must, a retaining sling, will give hard fighting fish such as barbel and grayling ample time to get their breath back after a spirited scrap. A few other things are common sense; don’t stand up with any large fish. If you drop it, it may appear unhurt, but the internal organs may be damaged beyond repair, and it will swim off only to go ‘belly up’ an hour later. Use your loaf, support the fish a few inches above the mat, that’s what it’s there for, to protect the fish if it flips away from you. Use suitable tackle too, it’s not fair to seek out big fish on light tackle, where you have a chance of getting smashed up, leaving terminal tackle trailing, which can wrap around an underwater obstacle and tether the fish. We’ve all heard about ‘death rigs’, there is enough information out there to ensure rig safety, so use it. Don’t be the one to cause a death or damage through ignorance…it really isn’t an excuse any more, though sadly, it’s why many fisheries have to conduct ‘rig checks’. Use wet hands to handle fish, not a towel, or gloves, as you will strip off the protective slime which covers the fish. Spikey perch and ruffe can cause injury, but if you slide your hand down from the head to trap the gill plates and dorsal spikes when unhooking, there is no need to envelop them in a cloth! I think I’ve covered most aspects, but to recap, get a mat, pick up some carp care medication, use the right tools, select the appropriate tackle and nets, and use a bit of common sense. Look after your fish, you take on that charge when you start fishing, so don’t neglect it… you are the custodian on the bank, it’s your responsibility; no-one else’s…

Saturday was the first bitterly cold day of winter so far, but 18 fixtures got the go-ahead in the County Senior League to warm up the spirits. Premier Division We can start nowhere else but Sheerien Park, where league leaders Grimethorpe Sports took on Wombwell Main. Jake Simon scored the only goal to give Wombwell a 1-0 victory, bringing Grimethorpe’s 10 game unbeaten start to the season to an end in the process. Second placed AFC Penistone Church Reserves were unable to take advantage of Grimethorpe’s slip as they fell to a 3-2 defeat at home to Swinton Athletic. Goals from Ryan McDonald and Luke Townsend were enough to give Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves a 2-1 away win over South Kirkby Colliery. Stocksbridge remain in third, but are just four points off the pace, with a game spare. Jubilee Sports were held to a 2-2 draw at home by Denaby United. The point, however, is enough to take them into fourth position. Handsworth Parramore Reserves were 3-0 winners against Houghton Main at Middlecliffe Lane. Strangely, it was the first time a team has scored more than two goals in a Handsworth league game this season. Carey Welford scored four times for North Gawber Colliery as they beat Millmoor Juniors 7-0 at Woolley Miners Welfare. Lee Elsworth (2) and Liam Marsden were also on target for North Gawber. Denaby Main ended a run of seven consecutive losses in all competitions, as they drew 3-3 with Frecheville at Davy Sports Club. Division One League leaders Dodworth Miners Welfare were once again in fine form, as they beat Kiveton Park 5-1 at home, with goals from Daniel Barlow, Ryan Barlow, Aaron Brotherton and Richard Dey (2). Second placed Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves hosted third placed High Green Villa the Yorkshire NU Build Stadium. High Green took all three points with a 3-2 win, replacing their rivals in second place. Goals from Keegan Hepplestone and Ben Bell gave Stocksbridge Park Steels Development a 2-1 away win over Sheffield Bankers. Bottom side Silkstone United ended a run of four straight defeats, as they drew 2-2 at home with Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915. Caribbean Sports drew 2-2 at Caribbean Sports Ground with Hepworth United. Hepworth have played just six games and despite being in 10th position, they are just three points off fourth place. Elsewhere, Brinsworth Whitehill were held to a 1-1 draw by Sheffield Medics at the Pheonix Sports Club. Division Two Swinton Athletic Reserves stretched their lead atop the Second Division to four points, with a 4-2 away win over Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Development. Ryan Becks scored an 85th minute penalty to give New Bohemians a hard-fought 4-3 win over Working Wonders at Forge Valley School. Goals from Jon Iufudu (2), Amgad Mohammed, Sharaz Noor and Yasin Omar gave Burngreave FC a 5-2 away win over Sheffield Bankers Reserves. Burngreave climb above the Bankers into fifth place with the win. Goals for Ross Bateman and Will Tomlinson gave AFC Dronfield Reserves a 2-1 win over Caribbean Sports Reserves at Gosforth Fields. Maltby Main Reserves and North Gawber Colliery Reserves played-out a rare 0-0 draw at Muglet Lane.

blair on mark fergie happy Matty Blair revealed he went through a full range of emotions after his winning strike sealed a 2-1 victory over MK Dons at the Keepmoat Stadium. The winger scored his first goal in almost a year to secure all three points for Rovers. “I haven’t had that feeling for a while, its been almost a year since my last goal, but I felt everything, excitement, happiness, and then I got pretty emotional as well,” he said. “I feel pretty good, it was a long-awaited goal and one that I needed, I’m absolutely thrilled to bits, but more importantly we’ve got the three points and that’s the main thing.” Blair stepped off the bench to score the deciding goal. “I’ve been playing defensively in the past few games, but when the gaffer threw me on into midfield I just wanted to go out there and enjoy myself and get the winner and I’ve done just that, so I’m delighted. They scored early on which shook everyone, but we’re a confident bunch that will always try and play the right way, we dominated the second half and we’ve gone on and got the three points. Take out the Wigan game and we’re in great form, and we are back to winning ways, we have two games now before the next league game, but we are well on our way.”

Darren Ferguson was pleased with the character shown by his side as they came from behind to beat MK Dons 2-1 at the Keepmoat Stadium. Chuks Aneke’s third minute opener put Rovers behind at the break, but second half goals from John Marquis and Matty Blair completed the turnaround. Ferguson said: “It’s a great three points for us and I saw a big reaction from what happened against Wigan. We had to show a lot of determination to come from behind, I was quite calm at half-time because I wanted to encourage them rather than criticising the team. In this league you just have to keep going and full credit to the players as they gave everything to get us the win.” Half-time substitute Alfie Beestin made an immediate impact with assists for both Rovers goals, and the manager has been impressed with the 20-year-old’s development this season. “Alfie has shown what a good player he is, he has worked hard in the gym to improve physically and that’s given him a lot of belief,” he added. “He gives you something different at the top end of the pitch, he’s got good balance and I really like him as a player. He came on and played very well, he played a key part in both goals and has now put himself in the frame be involved more often.”

Matty Blair hit the winning goal as Rovers came from behind to claim all three points against MK Dons in Sky Bet League One. It was a very quick start at the Keepmoat Stadium, but it certainly wasn’t the one that Rovers were looking for, with the visitors taking the lead with the very first attack. George Williams burst down the right-hand touchline enabled him to create enough space to cross into the area, with Chuks Aneke lurking at the edge of the area. He controlled well to turn and strike low past Ian Lawlor, to hand the Dons the lead inside three minutes. The visitors then had four good chances to extend their lead following their quick start. First, Ed Upson’s free kick from the edge of the area was struck low, but Lawlor got down to save. The next attack saw three attempts in a matter of seconds for the visitors, with Aneke capitalising on a Joe Wright slip, but he had two shots saved by Lawlor, before Upson fired over from the edge of the area. Dons looked like they meant business, and that short period was a huge let-off for Rovers. Niall Mason had Rovers’ first meaningful chance of the game, as he looked to catch out Lee Nicholls in the visitor’s goal, striking a low effort from 30 yards out, but the Dons’ keeper was able to collect at the second attempt. The visitors came forward and almost doubled their lead through Scott Golbourne, with the ball flicking up nicely for the left-back, volleying from just inside the area but striking the base of the far post. Once again the Dons came forward, and once more Lawlor came out on top though, this time Peter Pawlett got in behind down the right and forced the Irishman to save down low to his left. Rovers came out firing in the second half, as they looked eager to get back on terms. First, Ben Whiteman struck a free-kick
over the wall, but Nicholls was able to claim comfortably. Substitute Alfie Beestin was next to try his luck, cutting inside from the right and firing low past the near post. Beestin made an immediate impact, and he had a huge part in Rovers claiming the equaliser. John Marquis’ shot from the edge of the area was deflected wide, presenting James Coppinger with the opportunity to put a corner into the box. The captain’s corner was met by the head of Beestin, who nodded the ball down for Marquis to fire past Nicholls and get Rovers back on level terms. Whiteman next went close, as he worked some space on the edge of the box, but he could only strike into the hands of Nicholls. Milton Keynes then missed a golden opportunity to go back in front, with Lawlor the hero for the home side. Good work down the right between Golbourne and Pawlett enabled the latter to swing a cross in for Agard. The striker’s header looked destined for the far corner, but Lawlor produced an outstanding one-handed save to keep the scores level. The scores would not stay level for too much longer though, as Rovers took the lead for the first time in the game, and again it was Beestin who was involved. He received the ball from Mason, and his deft flick through the Dons’ defence found his fellow sub, Matty Blair, who slotted low underneath Nicholls and into the back of the net. The visitors had one last chance to get back on level terms, with substitute Aidan Nesbitt getting in behind Wright, but he could only fire wide of Lawlor’s near post. Rovers closed the game well though, and were great value for their win, with Marquis almost going close in injury time too, striking just over the bar.
millers lose out as latics take home the points DAVID Ball’s first league goal for the Millers proved scant consolation for Paul Warne’s men as Wigan Athletic ran out 3-1 victors at the AESSEAL New York Stadium. Northern Ireland international Will Grigg headed the visitors ahead before Ball’s superb effort from the edge of the box, soon after, levelled matters. However, Alex Bruce’s acrobatic effort and Michael Jacobs strike, either side of the break, saw Paul Cook’s promotion-chasing side earn the Roses spoils. Following their narrow defeat at the hands of ShrewsburyTown last time out, Millers chief Warne reshuffled his pack for the visit of the high-flying Latics. Slovakian ‘keeper Marek Rodak was recalled between the sticks while Michael Ihiekwe returned at the heart of the Millers defence following suspension. Influential skipper Lee Frecklington made his first start since early October while Anthony Forde and Ball were given an opportunity to impress with the latter asked to ply his trade just behind in-form striker Kieffer Moore in a 4-4-1-1 formation. The Millers had the first opportunity of note when Shaun Cummings cut inside on his weaker left-foot to float a delicate centre which had Wigan ‘keeper Jamie Jones in two minds as Moore was the first to the cross but the Ipswich loanee could not keep his header down as it ballooned over the bar. At the other end, Rodak was caught flapping at Max Power’s corner before the pressure was eased on the home side when Lee Evans’ overhit his centre, in the next phase of play. Moments later, Ryan Colclough was tripped by Joe Mattock on the edge of the box and from the resultant free-kick, Power curled a delightful centre when looked inch-perfect for

Grigg, just yards out, but a retreating defender managed to nip in front of him to snuff out the danger. A long ball forward saw Ihiekwe in a foot race with Jacobs, whereby the Tranmere defender appeared to get man and ball in a sliding tackle, but the referee penalised the home defender, and the moment proved crucial as the visitors broke the deadlock from the resultant free-kick. Evans fizzed a free-kick into the danger area and Grigg showed fleet of foot to get a yard on his marker and glance the ball into the heart of the Rotherham goal from point-blank range giving Rodak no chance. However, Wigan’s joy proved short-lived as Rotherham equalised within minutes of the restart. A long punt forward saw Moore flick the ball into the path of Ball, who got the ball under his spell before dropping the shoulder to work a shooting position and he made it count with a superb curling dipping effort, from the edge of the box, which beat the acrobatic dive of Jones to nestle in the far corner of the net. The Millers were buoyed by the equaliser and Forde had a snap shot deflected into the side netting before Ihiekwe headed wide from the resultant corner. At the other end, Colclough blasted over from a promising position before the home side were indebted to Mattock for diverting former Millers loanee Reece James’ tantalising centre to safety, at the far post. Rodak was in the thick of the action when he denied Colclough with a parried save before showing quick feet to scramble across his line to prevent Chey Dunkley from heading home, from close range, just seconds later. However, Wigan were not to be denied and just moments after, Frecklington headed clear from his own line, the ball was planted back
into the Millers box and Bruce, with his back to goal, showed fantastic skill to pop the ball up into the air before acrobatically turning the ball towards goal and Rodak could not keep it out despite getting a hand to his effort as it found the home net via the post. The Millers responded positively to the setback and Towell flicked wide at the near post before the Brighton playmaker latched onto Cummings’ floated ball over the top to race clear, in the home next attack, but he fluffed his lines when his cross evaded the array of home runners in the six-yard box. With half time approaching, Frecklington was penalised for hauling back Grigg but Wigan failed to make the home side pay from the resultant free-kick when Jacobs fired into the home fans behind the goal. In the last action of the half, Richard Wood joined Ihiekwe in the book for a foul on Jacobs. Following the restart, Towell became the next to see yellow for a lunge on Byrne before Wood may have been fortunate to escape sanction for bundling over Colclough in the box, but the referee waved away Athletic appeals for a spot kick. Power showed the Millers rearguard a clean pair of heels to fire a rasping effort which fizzed narrowly over the bar before the home crowd were baying for blood when Dunkley’s scissor tackle on Moore left him grounded, but the referee opted for a yellow card. Just before the hour mark, Moore’s knockdown paved the way for Frecklington to volley goalwards but Dunkley, arguably with the use of an arm, blocked his shot en-route to goal. However, Wigan took a firm grip on the game, just seconds later, when Ihiekwe failed to deal with a long ball forward and Grigg pounced on his error to
bear down on goal and although Rodak stood up tall to prevent Grigg rounding him to plant the ball into an empty net, the ball was relayed into the path of the onrushing Jacobs, who kept his nerve to drill a low effort which flew past a number of retreating defenders and Rodak to find the heart of the Millers goal. The Millers replied to the setback with gusto and Moore headed into the side netting from Frecklington’s hook into the box before sub Ryan Williams skipped to the by line to fire a deflected cross which was gathered by Jones. Wigan came close to adding a fourth when firstly Colclough showed good pace and skill to dig out a cross which had Rodak backtracking nervously before he clawed the ball to safety before Jacobs waltzed into the box to fire a dangerous cross-cum-shot which whistled across the home goal. With time running out for the home side, Forde planted a free-kick narrowly over the bar after Ball was felled on the edge of the box before the Irishman latched onto a loose ball in the box, moments later, but his tame effort was straight down the throat of Jones. In the dying minutes, sub Ivan Toney almost rubbed salt into home wounds when he headed narrowly wide from James’ centre before Rotherham squandered a chance to halve the deficit, late on, when Wood came agonisingly close to tapping home at the far post, following Frecklington’s hoick into the box, but the Rotherham centre-half failed to make a telling connection. In the last action of note, Frecklington volleyed wide of the target from an inviting position, as Wigan returned over the Pennines with the three points.

Leon Clarke scored his ninth goal in four games to help the Blades to a Championship point. Despite the reversal in the nine-goal Fulham encounter in midweek, boss Wilder kept faith, selecting the same starting XI and substitutes. The first 90 seconds were exclusively played in Birmingham’s half as United started well but it took until 12 minutes to register the first chance, Clarke heading wide under
pressure after patient build-up down the left. At the other end Wright was called upon to make a timely tackle to halt Jutkiewicz latching on to Kieftenbeld’s pass, but United were on top. Lundstram had two shots at goal in the space of three minutes but his first was blocked by Dean and goalkeeper Stockdale saved the second. On 24 minutes Clarke shot wide after Fleck’s cross, whilst, as the pressure mounted, Sharp was close

Jota’s corner was half-cleared to the edge of the box where BOGA let fly with a 20-yard effort into the top corner. The goal stunned the Blades crowd and there was a chance for a second before the interval, from a break, but Wright made another great tackle to stop Jutkiewicz. After a slow start
to the second half, United began to force the visitors back. Fleck’s drive from distance almost fell invitingly for Sharp and Lundstram was off-target with a first time effort from the edge of the box. Carruthers and Brooks were introduced as boss Wilder changed the system but there was a nervous moment when a communication breakdown between Wright, Blackman and O’Connell saw Jutkiewicz gifted

With not a lot of game time to find his feet in the Championship, John Lundstram showed in sustained spells against Birmingham why Chris Wilder wanted him in the squad (and let slip this week that the previously “undisclosed fee” was in the order of £700,000, showing his importance to his previous club, Oxford Utd) Lundstrum began to demand the ball and use it effectively and with confidence, as well as trying his luck from distance, with admittedly slightly mixed results. Blades fans should be delighted however with Wilder’s firm commitment to continuing with the free-flowing, attacking and exciting brand of playing the game. Listening to many of our local teams, we are lucky to witness such entertaining football week in week out taking away the result, the Fulham game, whilst feakish, was probably the best 90 minutes of entertainment many of the younger fans will ever have seen at the Lane - not since the Forest play-off game of 2003 has the stadium felt so alive!

stalemate in Berkshire. “We came to win the game and we are frustrated that we did not achieve three points. We have played three games in one week and we have not been beaten but, of course, we wanted to win all three. We go back to our home on Saturday to play Hull City and we need to see the fire of Hillsborough because the players play much better in this atmosphere.” The head coach also explained his decision to make six changes at the Madejski Stadium, with the busy fixture schedule and fitness levels in mind: “We have played three games in one week, it is a big schedule and we must manage the situation. Tom Lees was injured, he could not

owls deadlock The Owls shared the points with Reading from a goalless draw on a freezing afternoon in Berkshire. There was little to warm the cockles in terms of clear openings, with each cancelling out the other for the lion’s share of proceedings. The Royals edged the first half, Wednesday the second, but in truth a stalemate was probably a fair outcome. After Sone Aluko pulled an angled shot wide moments into the game, Reading settled well and forced a string of corners that threatened the Owls, who made six changes from the midweek trip to Ipswich. Liam Kelly was the architect and the Royals almost took the lead from that route on the half-hour mark when skipper Paul McShane might have done better six yards out. Wednesday had earlier knocked on the door themselves through the lively looking Lucas Joao but overall Reading had the upper hand from a low key first 45. Chances came at a

premium, though, the last of which fell to Dave Edwards, whose scuffed effort drifted past the post. The contest was in need of a boost after the break and Joao almost provided it in an instant, beating the offside trap but Vito Mannone was off his line swiftly to deal with the danger. Reading responded with Aluko firing inches wide from distance before Leandro Bacuna cut inside but blasted over the bar. Barry Bannan was a gnat’s away from sending Gary Hooper in on goal as the game opened up, with both sides scenting the win. And despite Wednesday bossing the closing stages, it was Reading that had the best chance of victory but Mo Barrow screwed wide eight minutes from time with the goal at his mercy. Still there was time for Jordan Rhodes to glance a Morgan Fox cross past the far post and that proved the final attempt to break the deadlock.
