BOLD NEW VISION FOR THE CENTRAL LIBRARY attended their public meetings last year. They have responded to their feedback by committing to keep a library service in the heart of the city. Books and the written word will be the focus of the new library, but it will also embrace new technology so everyone has the opportunity to learn and access knowledge. It will build on the proud history and legacy of the current Central Library, but it will be part of the digital age, helping to meet the needs of

Sheffield City Council is announcing a bold and unique vision for the Central Library service in the heart of the city centre. Over the last twelve months their team have visited inspirational libraries across the country, assessed them with a critical eye and brought the best ideas back to Sheffield. They have used these ideas to shape the vision. They have also taken on board the views of over 600 library users who

people in Sheffield now and in the future. The model for the Norfolk and Norwich Millennium Library located at the Forum in Norwich is most closely aligned to the council’s aspirations for Sheffield. The Forum is home to several organisations and is a focus for a wide range of learning and cultural activities in the centre of the city. It houses learning organisations, a café and a restaurant, as well as the library. The council want the

new Central Library to be a place for people to explore, learn, connect and create. It will be a space to share knowledge, inspire ideas, enrich the lives of local people, and create social spaces for everyone to come together in the heart of the City. The council will now look at possible new locations and funding options for the central library. They are also working with Museums Sheffield to develop the vision for the Graves

Gallery. Over the last year the Sichuan Guodong Group continued their work to assess the development opportunity of the current building. They have become aware of the significant financial issues of the building during the 12 months of exploratory work. They are aware of the challenges around the viability of creating a five star hotel and gallery. Whilst they continue to consider that, the council continues to work with them to explore its plans for significant investment in the city including residential developments in line with their city-wide relationship with them.

CASHLESS PARKING NOW AVAILABLE ACROSS ALL SHEFFIELD The days of wasting time and scrambling around for change to pay for parking across Sheffield are now at an end with a new cashless payment system being extended across the city this week.. Following the successful launch of PayByPhone in Sheffield city centre in May this year, cashless parking will now be available outside the city centre for the first time. PayByPhone now covers almost 10,000 parking spaces with nine car parks and 136 on-street locations outside of the city centre, meaning motorists across Sheffield can enjoy the convenience of paying to park with the app across the whole city. The introduction of cashless payments across the city has been welcomed by local businesses. PayByPhone is free to use, as the council has absorbed the service charge that motorists had to be pay when using the previous app. Councillor Jack Scott, cabinet member for transport

and infrastructure at Sheffield City Council, said: “This is excellent and timely news, with Christmas just around the corner. “I want as many people as possible to visit our excellent shops and don’t want anyone to be put off if they don’t have the money in their pocket there and then. This is a modern system for a modern city and it’s welcome for drivers as well as businesses. It’s great that once again, Sheffield is leading the way in innovation. “We are now rolling out the cashless parking scheme to other parts of the city for the first time meaning everyone who uses their car across the city can park with ease and flexibility. “We’re always looking at ways that we can help people across the city by implementing the very latest and free technology to make parking as easy and convenient as possible.” Kevin Bird, UK Commercial Director for PayByPhone, added: “We are delighted with the high uptake of PayByPhone in Sheffield city centre since its launch in May this year, and are excited to be expanding our footprint further within Sheffield.” PayByPhone includes several convenient features, such as a countdown timer and smart reminders that trigger before a parking session expires, reducing the risk of receiving a parking ticket. It also gives you the ability to extend your parking session from anywhere. PayByPhone is free to use and can be downloaded from the iOS App Store or the Google Play Store. Drivers can start using the app immediately and finish their registration later. Parking can also be completed at www.paybyphone.co.uk

KELL BROOK RETURNS TO SHEFFIELD WITH HUGE NEW ARENA SHOWDOWN

My friend can only sleep on stacks of old magazines. He’s got back issues. Have you heard about the new Eddie Stobart film coming out? It looks quite good, i’ve just seen the trailer!! So after winning the game, I decided to throw the ball into the crowd, like they do on the T.V. Apparently, it’s unacceptable in bowling. I was eating my tea last night when I suddenly thought to myself... This milk must be seriously out of date. People often ask me what my Mrs does, but it’s difficult to say really. She sells seashells on the sea shore. I scared the postman today by going to the door naked. I’m not sure what scared him more, my naked body or the fact that I knew where he lived. I said to my friend “My wife’s a peach.” He asked: “Because she’s curvaceous and juicy?” I replied “No, because she has a heart of stone.” Genie: Whats your first wish? Dave: I wish I was rich. Genie: Granted, what’s your second wish? Rich: I want lots of money.

Kell Brook will face Sergey Rabchenko on his debut at Super-Welterweight at the FlyDSA Arena in Sheffield on March 3, live on Sky Sports - tickets go on sale Wednesday 13th December 9am. Brook is gunning to become a two-weight World champion and that journey starts in his seventh outing in his hometown arena, and marks a return to action following his IBF World Welterweight showdown with Errol Spence at Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane ground in May, hot on the heels of his showdown with Middleweight beast Gennady Golovkin ‘The Special One’ is wasting no time in testing himself at his new weight by taking on Rabchenko. The Belarussian is ranked number seven in the WBC and won the European title by stopping Brook’s fellow Ingle Gym product and Steel City son Ryan Rhodes, so Brook knows that the stakes are once again high as he looks to make a statement at 154lbs. “I can’t wait to get back in there and it’s going to be special returning to the arena,” said Brook. “The Spence defeat cut deep and it took me some time to come to terms with it but now I’m back with a new challenge at 154lbs. I believe I will be stronger and better than ever in the division and my focus now is on becoming a two-weight two-time World champion. “Rabchenko is a dangerous fight for the return but I want to jump straight back in at World level and I think out styles will gel for an electric fight. I’m already deep in camp and I can’t wait to feel the atmosphere again in my home town on March 3.” “I’m really looking forward to this fight with Kell Brook and it’s going to be a war,” said Rabchenko. “I have fond memories of Sheffield and I believe the result will be the same. This is a high profile fight

in the division that has always been mine, and the winner will go on and challenge for the World title – it’s a must win fight for both of us.” “I’m so pleased to see Kell back in camp and moving up for a fresh start at 154lbs,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “He refused to vacate the title for Spence but was could never fight at his full potential making 147lbs anymore. This is a tough, tough test, probably tougher than I would have liked but Kell wanted to be straight back in at top level. “The Spence loss hurt him badly especially being at Bramall Lane but we are going to get this Arena jumping for his return – Kell is one of the top fighters in world boxing and you will see a new animal on March 3 at the FlyDSA Arena.” Tickets for the fight on Saturday 3rd March 2018 are priced from £44.80 through to £168 and go on general sale 9am Wednesday 13th December from www.flydsaarena.co.uk, 0114 256 56 56 or in person from the Arena Box Office.

JOIN NEXT YEAR’S COUNCIL BUDGET CONVERSATION

The North’s largest entertainment weekly, telephone our sales team to get your advert on these pages 0114 276 3633 opt.1

Sheffielders are being asked to give their views on council services and where money should be allocated as part of Sheffield City Council’s budget conversation. The council faces increasing demand for services, including adults’ and children’s social care, on top of cuts from central Government following seven years of austerity. Its plans include adding a three per cent social care precept to next year’s council tax bills, as 95 per cent of councils did this year. This

will equate to an extra 52p per week for most households – however, even with this additional funding, this will not cover all of the extra demand for social care. From Monday 11 December, people are asked to complete a survey online. A printed version of the budget survey is also available on request by emailing Budget2018-19@sheffield. gov.uk or phoning 0114 293 0239. Public events will also be held across the city in the New Year where people can find out more and have their say. Councillor Olivia Blake, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Finance at Sheffield City Council, said: “Next year we’re expecting to have to make further savings of more than

£30 million. At the same time, demand for our services is increasing. “We want to make sure people have the chance to tell us their priorities and where they think the opportunities are to invest or save more. “We’ve been put in financial stranglehold by the Government cuts and need to continue to provide essential services, including to the most vulnerable in our city. “Please get involved and have your say.” People can take the survey online at www. sheffield.gov.uk/budget Information about the public events will be publicised in January. Sheffield City Council’s final budget for 2018/19 will be agreed in March 2018, including decisions about council tax levels.

BONGO’S BINGO ANNOUNCES CIRQUE DU SOLEIL BRINGS ‘OVO’ JANUARY DATES FOR SHEFFIELD TO ARENAS ACROSS THE UK

Bongo’s Bingo enters the new year following an incredible 2017, which has seen a series of spectacular sold-out shows in Sheffield at the 02 Academy, further around the UK and expanding around the world into new destinations. The phenomenon is a catalyst for a shift in the night life scene across the country, with many eschewing the usual clubs, festivals and bars for an altogether different experience of magic and mayhem which has captured and inspired the imaginations of many. Saturday January 13th is the first show of 2018, and there are still a few tickets available for the

special show with the Vengaboys on Wednesday 24th January, with the other tour shows apart from Preston having all sold out. A wildly diverse demographic flock to Bongo’s Bingo not just for a night of incredible fun, singalongs and false calls, but something much more - for escapism, for nostalgia, for dancing on tables and also the chance to win a pink unicorn amongst many other prizes, including Henry Hoovers, boxes of Coco Pops and life-size cardboard cut outs, to big cash prizes. Bongo’s Bingo is an insane mix of a live show, a rave and headsdown game of bingo, with dance-

offs, rave intervals, plenty of heckling, audience participation, countless hands-in-the-air anthems each night. Bongo’s Bingo Saturday 13th and Wednesday 24th January with Vengaboys @ 02 Academy, 37-43 Arundel Gate, Sheffield S1 2PN Featuring big cash prizes, “$hit” prizes, rave intervals and danceoffs and more! HALF A MILLION REASONS TO VISIT THE OUTDOOR CITY Sheffield City Council has welcomed the announcement of its successful bid for funding to create adrenaline fuelled city breaks designed to attract international adventure sports enthusiasts looking for new adventures. Adrenaline Fuelled City Breaks is one of a number of successful projects to receive funding from the Government’s £40million Discover England Fund. The fund is administered by VisitEngland and the council will be working on a programme of activity to ensure the country stays competitive in the rapidlygrowing global tourism industry, by offering world-class English tourism products to the right customers at the right time. The fund is a central government-funded programme of activity, supported by matchfunding by partners in the public and private sectors. Sheffield’s successful bid will target groups of young, active explorers from northern Europe, Germany, the Netherlands and the Nordic countries of Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland, who will be inspired by Sheffield’s mix of independent culture and the unique outdoor adventures they can take part in. Sheffield will provide a mix of activities for adventure seekers and allow a new audience of international visitors to tread in the footsteps of world class mountain bikers, cyclists and climbers.

Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Cabinet Member for Business and Investment, said: ‘We are seeing real progress in the development of Sheffield’s status as a world-class tourism destination with The Outdoor City being part of a strategy to attract new visitors. We know that the adventure market is growing, and that there is real scope to increase England’s share of the adventure sports tourism market. The opportunity, alongside other developments such as that at Parkwood Springs, is to position Sheffield at the heart of that national offer, and to bring a new Europe-wide audience to the tremendous opportunities the city provides, both in the outdoor and nighttime economy” Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure, said: “Cities are a huge part of the tourism market, and a major draw for international visitors to England. The number of European citizens taking city breaks has increased by 35 per cent since 2013 with cities particularly popular with our target market of visitors aged under 35. This is a real vote of confidence in Sheffield and our status as the Outdoor City. It is another boost for what is already a unique and high-quality offer, particularly in terms of outdoor activity, but it is also a vote of confidence in the appeal of the city’s culture, nightlife and accommodation.”

VisitEngland Chief Executive Sally Balcombe said: “The calibre of submissions reflects the innovation in product development thriving across the country’s tourism landscape. The successful projects will boost international and domestic visitor growth creating a stepchange in the industry and spreading economic benefits of tourism across England. “Marketing Sheffield’s winning project showcases the outstanding offer of outdoor, adrenaline fuelled activities and the chance to explore an exciting and vibrant city, discovering its culture, heritage and nightlife.” Marketing Sheffield is the Destination Management Organisation sitting within Creative Sheffield, the economic development arm of the council and responsible for developing the Outdoor City strategy and which instigated this project. The half a million pounds win is further evidence that Sheffield has world-class outdoor facilities on its doorstep. The ‘Adrenaline-Fuelled City Break’ project follows the council’s appointment of the EXTREME Destinations-led consortium to deliver a branded sports, leisure and entertainment solution at Parkwood and will help design an offer which will enable international visitors to tread in the footsteps of some of the best extreme athletes in the world.

NEW BOOK CELEBRATES THE HISTORY OF WORKING MEN’S CLUBS Neil Anderson’s new ‘Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to Working Men’s Clubs’ has proved so popular it has already sold out its first print run! The book goes into great detail about the venues of our region and focuses on the boom years of the movement in the 1970s. It tells the story of the rise of Greasborough Social Club – the

Working Men’s Club widely regarded as the first one to bring the biggest stars in the world to perform in front of blue collar workers in the North of England. It includes chapters on the club trip, the dominance of bingo and the scores of local acts that went on to dominate the scene – everyone from the Discoes to Marti Caine.

The author has interviewed scores of stars and punters and there’s hardly a local club that doesn’t get a mention – everywhere from Dial House to the Loco is included! The book also contains the last ever interview given by clubland star Bobby Knutt before his death a few weeks ago. Neil Anderson said: “It’s hard to appreciate the

stranglehold the Working Men’s Club movement had over life in Britain in the 1970s. “With over four million members frequenting over four thousand clubs across the country, the movement’s influence permeated every sector of society. “It provided the training ground for scores of acts that become national icons – names like

Cannon & Ball, Les Dawson, Little & Large, Marti Caine, Paul Shane, and scores of others all had hardened club audiences to thank for their rise to stardom. “It is wonderful to know the book has been received so well!” The Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to Working Men’s Clubs costs just £13.95

SHEFFIELD COUNCIL SET OUT BOLD PLANS FOR CLEANER AIR

Sheffield City Council is launching a new strategy to combat dangerous air. The Council says it has no intention whatsoever to charge private car-users but will consider charging the largest and most polluting vehicles, such as buses, coaches, and lorries, as part of a study looking at options to bring down emissions in the city. Sheffield is one of many cities across the country which is having to consider whether a ‘Clean Air Zone’ is needed. The Council will work in partnership with bus companies to improve the bus fleet and reduce emissions through replacement low-emission buses or retrofitting vehicles with cleaner engine technology. The Council will also roll out Anti-Idling Zones around schools and other sensitive locations from early 2018 and establish a 20mph speed limit across the city centre. Meanwhile, the Sheffield Transport Vision, also set to be approved by cabinet next week before a consultation process in early 2018, looks at how the city’s transport network will meet the challenges from increased economic growth, demand and investment over the next 15 years. This includes considering new park and ride schemes, interventions to speed up public transport and create safe, separate cycling networks for shorter journeys as part of further highway improvements. In addition to developing the vision, the council will continue to deliver and work up a number of existing schemes, to improve Sheffield’s transport network.

CLIVE BETTS MP JOINS LORD MAYOR OF SHEFFIELD TO OPEN £7M SHEFFIELD FOOTBALL HUB Clive Betts, MP for Sheffield South East, joined The Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Cllr. Anne Murphy, to officially open the St George’s Park Westfield sports hub at the Isobel Bowler Sports Ground recently. It is named after the much-loved local Councillor, Isobel Bowler, who passed away in 2016. The sports ground that now bears her name is in the ward she represented, Mosborough. Her mother, Sarah, was present at the official unveiling. A £4.38m grant from the Parklife Football Hubs Programme enabled Sheffield City Council to install two brand new third generation (3G) artificial grass pitches (AGP), perform improvement works on the site’s four existing grass pitches and develop a state-of-the-art new sports hub which, in total, cost £7m to build. The new hub – the third of its kind in Sheffield after St George’s Park Graves, in Norton, and St George’s

Park Thorncliffe, in High Green, opened – cements the city as a hotbed of football. The state-of-the-art building boasts six team changing rooms; officials’ changing rooms; an accessible changing room; a coach education room; a kitchen and bar; a reception and office; a first-aid room and spectator toilets. On the second floor is a further two changing rooms, another accessible changing room and a fitness suite. The new pitches will benefit partner clubs Beighton Magpies FC, Mosborough FC and Sheffield Utd Ladies. Previously, these clubs had to travel to a number of sites across the city to accommodate their training needs. Now, they are able to use the new hub as their home venue. Additionally, the Sheffield and Hallamshire FA will deliver ‘Just Play’ sessions, aimed at 16-19-year-olds, and plan to establish a new FA Elevens League. The facility will become an Ability Counts League venue, as well as being used for FA Disability Talent Identification Programme sessions. It is expected that the partner clubs will introduce 13 new teams, taking their collective total from 21 to 34. This supports an expected increase in football participation onsite of 492%. Improving football provision for girls is also a key objective, and the Sheffield and Hallamshire FA have assigned a Women and Girls’ Officer to deliver skills sessions

Parklife – a five-year commitment to build many multi-pitch hubs across towns and cities in England – creates sustainable community football hubs across the country raising playing standards and opportunities for all. The £200m programme receives investment from The FA alongside the Government, Premier League and local partners. It is delivered nationally by the Football Foundation. Founded in 2000, the Football Foundation is the largest sports charity in the UK funded by the Premier League, The FA and Government, via Sport England. It develops new and refurbished grassroots sports facilities in order to improve the quality and experience of playing sport at the grassroots level. Since it was launched in 2000, the Foundation has awarded around 15,000 grants worth more than £580m towards improving grassroots sport, which it has used to attract additional partnership funding of over £800m – £1.4bn of investment into the grassroots game. Clive Betts, MP for Sheffield South East, said: “It was a huge honour to officially open this new Parklife hub, which joins the two sites at Graves and Thorncliffe respectively as major assets to our

community. Grassroots sport is vital to this area, and facilities such as this one are at the forefront of improving the standard of grassroots provision that we offer in this country. “The Parklife programme, which is funded by The FA, Government, Premier League and local partners, and is being delivered by the Football Foundation, should be praised for the impact it is having on grassroots football.” Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Leisure, said: “Sheffield is known as the birthplace of football and the Parklife hubs that have opened here will ensure the city can continue this sporting tradition. I am honoured to see that St George’s Park Westfield is situated in a sports ground that has been named after my good friend and colleague, Isobel Bowler, who passed away last year. “Isobel was the Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Leisure and she led the council’s partnership with The FA to develop the Parklife hubs in the city. Having the sports ground named after Isobel is a fitting tribute and her legacy will continue, and she would hope, like me, it will encourage and inspire people in Sheffield to play football and keep active.” Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said: “I am delighted that this Parklifefunded football hub at the Isobel Bowler Sports Ground is now open. It is a shining example of the work that is being carried out across the country by the Football Foundation to revitalise the game at the lowest levels. “Using funding that comes from the very top of the game – from the Premier League and The FA – as well as the Government, this new, state-of-the-art football facility will not only improve the experience of those who already play the game, simply for the love of doing so, but should also help to encourage even more local people to get active by taking up the national game.”

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

As is customary at this time of year, many of us like to look back at the previous few months and reflect on their angling to gauge whether it’s been a successful year or otherwise, so that is what I’m doing this week… Just eighteen months ago, I was still a wholetime member of the Fire Brigade, albeit on ‘light duties’ whilst the outcome of an injury and subsequent illness was assessed. As an unfortunate result, the decision was made, and I was retired, given just two days notice, and cast out into the real world to seek employment; a very scary few days ensued… Admittedly, I had some financial leeway, but still had to find some way of making ends meet, so decided to give angling writing some full time commitment. Happily, after writing part-time for almost nine years, the leap wasn’t as big as expected, and after a first ‘proper’ year fully self-employed, with new clients, it’s going well. I’m able to fish twice a week, write about the outcome, and get rewarded for it. A dream job in my eyes...and I know that I’m now very lucky... So, what of my fishing? I chose to spend the first part of the year on an estate lake, a shallow silty mere, where only a third of the bank, on one side of the lake, is accessible to anglers. At over nine hundred yards long, that also means there is also plenty of inaccessible water for the fish to hide in! My first couple of visits were just to get a feel for the water, and see how other anglers tackled it... I have fished it for pike in winter, but never enjoyed the beautiful surroundings in the spring and summer months, and having been told that it is a tough water, I wasn’t all that confident that I would catch much! It didn’t turn out that way however, and from almost my first visit, I found fish, and plenty of them! I was specifically targeting the quality tench and bream which reside within, but shied away from standard static mini boilie bolt rigs, or quivertipping tactics, and instead opted to fish The Method. Having moved earlier in the year from one major bait company to another when I joined Spotted Fin, this water would provide the ideal test for the new baits… My usual attack was to fish two rods, both with a small tri-lobe feeder packed with Spotted Fin groundbaits and small pellets, then band on an 8mm wafter which was then pushed into the feeder. Several times, double takes resulted in me tucking a rod under my chin whilst I played a fish to the net, and for a couple of months, I enjoyed frenetic sport, landing up to twenty five fish in a day session, despite being advised that five or six was a good result! It was more pleasing however, to see other anglers taking an interest, trying the same baits and methods, and also enjoying good results! I landed dozens of excellent bream and tench, almost into double figures, lost a couple of unexpected carp too, and had fun watching others catch; brilliant! I’ve also had the opportunity of many new products to use, assess and review. I have been particularly impressed with the Vader X range of tackle released by Sonik Sports which comprises rods, reels and a landing net, aimed squarely at the introductory sector of the market, but offering both superb value for money, and a quality product. The Sonik ‘3 for 2’ offer means that the range is certainly affordable, and the sales figures reflect that. Whilst fishing on the bank,

other anglers have seen them in use, and even ordered them whilst I’ve been talking to them… they are THAT good! I’ve now decided that even though the Dominator X range is forthcoming in early 2018, I’m perfectly happy to use the Vader X for the majority of my carp fishing and will continue to use them with confidence; you should try them… After the early part of the year on the estate lake, I returned to a water which is probably best described as ‘fish soup’. It’s a club water, absolutely jammed with double figure carp, quality bream, and hard fighting stillwater barbel. (Don’t blame me, I didn’t put them there!) I’ve enjoyed numerous sessions in good company with my angling chum Andy, and between us, we’ve pillaged the place, sharing somewhere in the region of at least five hundred carp between ten and twenty pounds…and all on one rod each! (I don’t make the rules either!) We’ve enjoyed some fast and frantic fishing, with sometimes more than twenty good doubles each in a day, all on simple methods, bantering about our chosen baits and much more. It’s been great fun, which is what fishing is all about, and it’s been an ideal proving ground for other waters. One of my favourite visits was in company of a young chap who wanted to catch his first carp, and wanted me to show how him the ropes. He caught a dozen or more, improving his personal best more than once, and ended the day with a terrific smile, and some fantastic memories! Dropshot fishing is something I’ve tried to do a bit more of throughout the year. It’s a simple, effective way to explore miles of river or canal, or enjoy walking the banks of a lake, dropping tiny lures into small areas to try and find pockets of fish. It’s accessible too, with the minimum of tackle required to enjoy a good day’s fishing, and it’s getting ever more popular. I’ve enjoyed spending time showing other anglers how I fish, helping a few to refine their tackle and techniques, and it’s a great way to meet new friends too. It’s a very sociable way to fish (if you stay off the social media platforms!) and can give unexpected results too. I had a particularly pleasing canal chub very early in the year, which unfortunately flipped in the net and rolled back into the water. Much more unfortunately, it was caught on video, much to the amusement of others as I scrabbled after it! I would have loved to have weighed that fish, but it didn’t detract from the enjoyment! Talking of chub, I’ve had some super sport on the upper reaches of the River Trent, catching some pleasing fish from small stretches and tight swims where stealth is everything. Sitting in the meadow by the side of the river, hiding behind nettles and reeds, flicking in small pieces of flake, and a few maggots for half an hour before touch legering a small of bread through the swim has to be one of the best ways to spend an afternoon. Laying on my back amongst buttercups and honeysuckle, staring at the clouds whilst dropping bait into a likely swim took me right back to my younger days when I fished an even smaller river for trout… it was blissful, and even though I managed less than a dozen casts all day, it was absolute heaven, and I caught some crackers too! I’ve done my first ever show recently too; at the behest of one of my sponsors, RAD Angling, I spent a couple of days in Surrey, at The Carp Society Winter Show, and loved every tiring minute of it! After all, if you can’t go fishing, then talking about it has to be the next best thing, and with a steady stream of willing listeners, myself and the team had a great time! I enjoyed it immensely, made some fantastic contacts, cemented friendships, and have already committed to two further shows in 2018, which I’m also looking forward too; if you get the chance, step up and do one… you’ll love it! Finally, I’ve spent the last couple of months investigating a ‘new’ pike water. It’s one I’ve wanted to fish for a long time, but have never been able to sort myself out… I intend to really put some effort into predator fishing for the remainder of the season, and so far, I’ve been consistent, with a good number of double figure snappers, yet no monsters, and only a couple of blank sessions when I’ve changed waters. In truth, pike fishing has been something at which in the past I’ve been ‘lucky’ rather than ‘good’, so I’m hoping to tip the balance a little further the other way! I’ve met some excellent pikers too, which has helped, and despite the lack of warm sunshine, I’ve enjoyed each visit, whether in the rain, in minus temperatures, sleet or snow, and it has been the perfect end to a very good year! Finally, I hope you have had success with your angling this year, and for all those who do read my column, follow my blog, or contact me directly, thank you; I really do appreciate it, it helps make my angling even more enjoyable! Tight lines!

BALL LOOKING TO BACK UP Follow Your Local Team Every Week In The Mercury BLACKPOOL RESULT

the training ground, we need to make sure that we build on that now. “A good win at the weekend always spills into the early part of the week at training. The lads are all in good spirits to start with, and then the focus turns to the next game. It is equally important this weekend that we try and get another three points, but it won’t be easy. It is important for us to try and get back on a run, and look up towards the top six.” With the Millers back on home soil against Derek Adams’ Pilgrims this weekend, Ball knows league positions pale into insignificance in the highly-competitive nature of League One. A return to the home form which saw the Millers command healthy wins over the likes of Southend, Oldham and Walsall earlier in the campaign is at the top of Ball’s wish list, as the Millers look to focus their attention at the top end of the division going into the New Year. “The lads have been a little disappointed with recent home results, because we want our home to be a fortress,” he added. “To compete at the top, strong home form is paramount. We had that kind of home form at the start of the season, so there is no reason why we can’t achieve it again. “Whilst Plymouth are near the bottom, we know that any game in this league is tough, and we also know they have got results against some good teams away from home. I’m sure the lads are raring to go though, we are all looking forward to playing again.”

FOOTBALLRR UNDUP FOOTBALL UNDUP WARNE PROUD OF MILLERS MILLERS chief Paul Warne explained that there were celebratory scenes in the Rotherham dressing room after David Ball’s second-half brace helped them overturn a first-half deficit to record their first win in eight games at the expense of Blackpool. The Millers had a mountain to climb at the interval following Kelvin Mellor’s superb first-half strike, but Ball levelled matters with a close range finish following Will Vaulks’ long-throw before the diminutive striker headed home his third league goal on the season – with three minutes to go, to send the thousand strong Millers fans home in jubilant mood. Speaking to the assembled media afterwards, Warne was quick to express his pride at his side’s much-improved secondhalf showing. “I was pretty excited to be honest. It’s been a while since we tasted victory. It felt like a promotion in the dressing room,” Warne enthused. “There were a lot of things I didn’t like at half time. We shook it up. I’m glad the lads have stopped the points rot. It’s a good day at the office for us.” The Millers started the game with a 3-5-2

formation but Warne made changes at halftime with Anthony Forde and Jerry Yates introduced into the fray and the duo made a positive impact, as the Millers looked a transformed outfit after the break – to the delight of the Millers boss. “We had to change it at half-time. I made some changes and played a different way and we were more on the front foot,” Warne added. “We worked on a 3-5-2 all week but unfortunately Frecks dropped out last night and it didn’t work aswell as it had in training. “We were desperate not to concede and as bad as we were going forward, defensively we looked all right. “I came in at half-time and realised we needed to change. I thought Jerry and Fordey had massive impacts. We had a lot more legs behind us and it allowed us to get behind them a lot more. “Bally got his two goals and his work rate was unbelievable. I’m really proud. He’s the best footballer we have at the club. I’m really pleased for him.

Rotherham United striker David Ball says the Millers must use last weekend’s result against Blackpool as a springboard heading into the busy festive period. Ball bagged a brace last weekend as the Millers came from behind to record a 2-1 success at Bloomfield Road – a win which parachuted Paul Warne’s side back into ninth position. Whilst the victory was a welcome boost, the former Manchester City striker has targeted a good run over Christmas, with back-to-back home games against Plymouth and MK Dons followed by holiday fixtures against at Bury and Walsall. The 27-year-old says the Millers are looking to rediscover their blistering home form from the start of this season, and believes success on the coast will give them confidence going into the next batch of fixtures. “The good thing about Christmas is that the games come thick and fast,” Ball told www. themillers.co.uk “For us, coming off the back of the win at Blackpool, it has got everyone in good spirits again. You can see how happy everyone is at

FERGUSON: PERFORMANCE MERITED MORE Manager Darren Ferguson felt Rovers’ performance at Oxford deserved at least a point, after being stung by a last-gasp strike at the Kassam Stadium. Josh Ruffels’ 96th-minute winner was the difference between the two sides, but Ferguson believes that it was his team that will be left feeling hard done by. “The game should be finished by the time they put it into the net, and it’s painful in the dressing room because we want to go out and win, the performance was really good and so

that’s a hard one to take,” Ferguson said. “With 30 seconds to go you want to win it, and the disappointing thing is that we’ve given the ball away cheaply and they’ve been able to break, we’ve been very unfortunate. “My job is to keep the players positive but its painful for me too, it’s a very sore one to take, it’s a game we shouldn’t have lost and we will have to learn from it, we’re a fit team that want to play with great intensity so its disappointing to lose how we have.” Ruffels’ late strike came following Ian

Lawlor’s penalty save from Jack Payne with little over 10 minutes to play, and Ferguson felt the result was not a true reflection of his side’s performance. “It was a very good save from the penalty by Ian and he’s done well to keep hold of it as well, apart from that we were totally dominant in the second half and we should’ve been well ahead,” he added. “I thought the first half was quite cagey and in the second half we gained control and pressed excellently, so I’m really disappointed,

especially for the fans and I hope they can see the performance we put on. “The level of performances recently has been much better, and today I’ve seen a lot of good stuff from my team, we’ve had a lot of good chances and we’re creating plenty so there are plenty of positives to take.” Tickets for next Saturday’s Sky Bet League One clash with Oldham Athletic are still available via the Club Doncaster Box Office and they can be purchased either by visiting in-store, calling on 01302 762576, or online at tickets.clubdoncaster.co.uk.

MARQUIS LOOKING TO BOUNCE BACK Striker John Marquis says it is important Rovers bounce back from their 1-0 defeat against Oxford United when they take on Oldham Athletic on Saturday. Rovers face the Latics who currently occupy 16th position in Sky Bet League One and sit three points above them in the table, and Marquis is looking forward to getting back to winning ways. “We were disappointed with the way the game ended against Oxford so will be looking to get back to winning ways at home against Oldham who have a relatively new manager,” said Marquis. “Our performance levels have been really good of late and some of the results haven’t gone our way lately but this game on Saturday is the perfect chance to bounce back. “We have some difficult teams that are around

us in the league table and it’s a cliché but we have to take it game by game, it’s a great time of year for supporters to watch football, it’s a busy but exciting period for everyone.” Former Rovers midfielder Richie Wellens brings his Oldham side to the Keepmoat on Saturday afternoon and Marquis says that they will be coming into the game full of confidence after their 5-1 win over Northampton Town. “I didn’t play with Richie Wellens but all the lads who know him in the changing rooms have said how good he is technically and the way that he played, so I’m sure that he will take his ideas as footballer into management,” said Marquis. “You can see that in the small space of time that he has been in charge that he has changed a lot of things, they are playing a lot better

football and their results have picked up of late. “They will be coming into the game on Saturday full of confidence off the back of their 5-1 victory over Northampton but we are confident in ourselves that we can go out there and get the three points.”

YOU DON’T ALWAYS GET WHAT YOUR DESERVE

‘You don’t always get what you deserve’, was Chris Wilder’s assessment after Friday’s cruel home reversal against Bristol City. Leon Clarke netted his 14th of the season to cancel out Jamie Paterson’s opener, only for Aden Flint to win it for the Robins at the death. But Wilder, who saw John Fleck dismissed for a challenge on Korey Smith just after the hour, was in bullish mood despite the defeat.

He remarked: “I believe we did more than enough to win the game. The reaction of the players epitomised what this club is about, from the manager, to the staff, to what those players gave out there. “Bristol City are in great nick, they comfortable turned Middlesbrough over last week and that was a deserved victory against a side that thought they’d win the league. “They’ve got several good players and are flying, but I

thought some big, big decisions went against us. “The big lad who came on at half-time was committing fouls for 20 minutes before getting a yellow card and at the death there is a clear high boot on Jack O’Connell as he heads clear in the build-up to Flint’s goal and he isn’t stooping at all.” The Blades boss added: “Their goalkeeper has made some unbelievable saves, we’ve hit to woodwork several times and although I

hate losing, I loved the way my team played. “There have been a few questions asked and rightly so, have teams worked us out and has the bubble burst? “People will be thinking we’ve had an excellent start and that’s us done, but those players responded to any negativity from anyone who wants to throw it at us in great fashion and unfortunate you don’t always get what you deserve.”

LEON NAMED SKY BET CHAMPIONSHIP PLAYER OF THE MONTH

Entering Friday evening’s clash against Bristol City, which will be televised live on Sky Sports, United’s number 9 has 13 goals to his name in the league and is the division’s top scorer. Clarke said: “It’s a really nice achievement. Personally, it was a good month goalscoring-wise but obviously for the team it wasn’t so good, we didn’t pick up as many point as we would’ve liked. “Every time I go on the pitch it’s an opportunity to prove to people that doubted me at Championship level. “To have 13 goals already has hopefully silenced a few people’s opinions of me, but I’m not going to stop at 13 goals, I’m going to keep going and striving to achieve more goals this season.” Sky Sports’ EFL pundit Don Goodman said: “Not since Luis Suarez in March 2013 has a player scored as many goals in a calendar month as Clarke did in November. “He’s finally found a home and has fans that love him and it really

shows. When he’s getting service like he got in November, goals are sure to flow.” Sky Bet EFL trader Mikey Mumford said: “Leon Clarke has been the standout performer in the Championship in a month which he has scored by the bucket load. “His nine league goals have elevated him to the top of the scoring charts in the second tier where he can now be backed at 6/1 with Sky Bet having been as big as 20/1 before his excellent four-goal salvo against Hull. “He then followed that up with a hat-trick in an epic encounter with Fulham where he definitely didn’t deserve to be on the losing side and his goals alongside fellow striker Billy Sharp will be key as the Blades aim to stay in the promotion hunt.”

BLADES TO SUBMIT PLANNING FOR EXTENDED SOUTH STAND

Leon Clarke has been named the Sky Bet Championship Player of the Month for November. Unsurprisingly, Clarke has beaten Albert Adomah, Barry Douglas and Matej Vydra to the award after netting nine goals in just four appearances last month. Clarke’s haul saw him net four times in the 4-1 win over Hull City (which included a ‘perfect’ hat-trick), the third goal in United’s victory at Burton Albion, another ‘perfect’ treble against Fulham at Bramall Lane and the equaliser against Birmingham City.

Building design development plans for Sheffield United’s South Stand have been revealed. Detailed design information is to be submitted to Sheffield City Council following an outline consent originally granted in 2009. Proposals seek to add more than 5,400 seats, new executive boxes and a media centre. The existing Cherry Street car park area (which currently has 310 spaces) will be replaced by a slightly smaller number of spaces spread between ground and basement level car parks. The designs befit the heritage and prestige of the Bramall Lane stadium, its place in world football - it is the world’s oldest continuously used

professional football venue - and United. The Blades have previously secured an extended outline planning consent for the Stand. Key elements of the design, developed with reference to the illustrative images at Outline Planning stage include the four semi- circular staircase enclosures and large expanses of natural glazing helping to promote an active frontage and flood daylight into the main entrance and triple height conference space behind. The design looks to celebrate the exposed steelwork supporting the cantilever roof from above, uses high quality profiled steel cladding and areas of red brickwork helping to anchor a building of this scale. Those elements will dictate that the proposal relates back to the local heritage and together with dedicated feature signage zones will ensure it fits perfectly within the masterplan vision for Bramall Lane. The Club, which increasingly uses the

stadium for a multitude of non-footballing events, is seeking approval for a new second tier with an additional 5,400 seats with an associated concourse and food/drink kiosks. In addition to this, approximately 250 car parking spaces over two levels, improved facilities for the less abled, new executive facilities, a multi-purpose function room, an exhibition space and a new ticket office are all proposed. United Chief Operating Officer Andrew Birks said: “This is about the Club planning for the future, seeking an extension of the current planning permissions based on an exciting and extended scheme. “This is very much about looking ahead following our promotion to the Championship and potentially a place in the highest tier of the English game. We have a rich historical background in the city and within football. Our stadium of the future will reflect this relationship and be capable of contributing to the long-term future of the Blades.”

GUNG-HO ATTITUDE COSTING UNITED against Fulham allowed them to put together a couple of devastating counter attacks which took the game beyond Wilder’s side. Against Sheffield United were caught out against Bristol, a lack of defensive cover in the 91st Bristol City last Friday, and the move minute and the draw disappeared. These points by Chris Wilder to throw on a couple of forwards arguably cost the team a valuable will add up, there is no shame in settling for a draw. Especially when the team is a man down point. The sending off put the brakes on for over half an hour. The gung-ho attitude any potential United win and I think plenty might win United a few points during the in the stadium knew it. Wilder’s attitude to remainder of the season. However, the counter always go for the win has been a trademark of is how many will it lose us? Two points his time in charge. That attitude has allowed slipped away and now United are looking the squad to dispatch with League One with behind them to the teams chasing a play-off ease and to make a very strong start to life in place. The run-up to the January window is of the Championship. But is that tactic always vital important. If the team can string a few necessary? I would argue that throwing caution results together they will be in a great position to the wind has cost the Blades two points in to attract players in the transfer period. Should recent games, that being in reference to the they continue to drop points other clubs above will have the bargaining power. Fulham and Bristol fixtures. The substitutions

SECOND HALF ERRORS PROVE COSTLY Carlos Carvalhal says second half errors proved costly at Carrow Road as Wednesday saw their early lead overturned to leave Norfolk empty-handed. Jordan Rhodes put the Owls ahead on 18

minutes and that onegoal advantage stayed intact at the halfway stage. Norwich then hit back after the break to secure their first home win since September, with a 3-1 scoreline, as Carlos

must be compact, solid and block the spaces, play with the lines together and we will put a lot of problems to Norwich. “Really we did very well with this in the first 45 minutes. We scored the goal and should have scored a second. “Second half, in a situation where we are winning 1-0, you can’t take a goal on the counter attack, in the fast attack. “We should not take this kind of goal when we are winning. We cannot open an opportunity to the team to score on the counter attack like that. “But we did this mistake.”

James Maddison smashed home the rebound to equalise for the Canaries after Keiren Westwood had denied Alex Pritchard. And Wednesday were left with an uphill battle with little over 20 minutes to play when Timm Klose buried a firm header past Westwood from a corner. But it was the equaliser that Carlos believes proved crucial, as he added: “The first goal was crucial because when you are playing like we were in the first half, you can then lose the balance of the team in one moment. “We lose the balance and to me the moment

of the game was the first goal because it changed everything. “After this, we stayed frustrated about everything and the good things we did in the first half were compromised with everything in the second by this mistake. “We took a lot of risks and put a lot of players in attack again because in the minimum we wanted to achieve one point. “But we was not effective in attack to receive the ball and keep it in those areas, with the second balls they win possession to counter attack and scored the third.”
