ARTS CHARITIES JOIN FORCES TO GET YOUNG PEOPLE TAKING PART IN ARTS Cast, Doncaster’s flagship theatre and darts (Doncaster Community Arts) will be delivering exciting artistic opportunities for children and young people as part of a newly funded project. Focusing on children who have less access to the arts, darts and Cast will work with EXPECT Youth to connect up local children and young people with arts activities over the next two years. This new youth arts programme will link with Doncaster Music Education Hub, the South Yorkshire Dance Partnership, Doncaster
Cultural Education Partnership (DCEP) and will be influenced by local young people themselves to create new opportunities that have a wide-ranging impact. Helen Jones, Assistant Director for darts ‘We’re thrilled to have secured the investment from Arts Council and Expect Youth. It’ll help us, in partnership with Cast, to put on a fantastic range of high quality free creative opportunities for Doncaster Children and Young People. We’re designing the programme with children and young people and have already been getting
creative in our Summer sessions. They’ve created an ‘Imaginary Instrument Factory’ using circuit boards and midi wizardry, to design and build fantastical electronic instruments, got hands on in outdoor sculpture workshops, and even created giant glow in the dark drawings. I’m so looking forwards to giving more children and young people the opportunity to share their ideas and take part in a range of amazing experiences.’ Over the next two years Cast, darts and local partners aim to raise the profile of the arts offer

for Doncaster children and young people, build on local aspirations and promote physical and mental wellbeing. Peter Norman, Strategic Development Office for Doncaster Youth Alliance comments: ‘EXPECT Youth is committed to providing a wide variety of opportunities and activities for young people across the borough. This ambitious project has the potential to help develop the personal skills and aspirations of a large number of young people who may not ordinarily consider becoming
involved in an arts project. We know the positive impact such projects can have on the future of individuals, communities and that can only be a good thing for everyone in Doncaster.’ This funding will also support the delivery of nationally recognised arts qualification Arts Award with young people across the borough and will ensure that there is a guaranteed offer of arts experiences available to all 0-19 year-olds living locally. To kick-start this work, families attending DNweekeND (9-10 Sep) will be able to achieve their ‘Discover
Arts Award’. A limited number of free packs will be available outside Cast during the weekend festival to guide locals on a creative journey around the town to learn new skills and have fun.
Just look out for the Arts Award banners to get involved. arts opportunities’ Arts Council England, through Bridge Organisation and Creative Development
Agency IVE have invested £50,000 into this transformative twoyear programme, with an additional £50,000 matched by the Expect Youth.

DOCKLESS BIKES ARE GO IN SHEFFIELD The world’s first dockless bike hire scheme has expanded to Sheffield this week with a fleet of 1,000 bikes – the largest and fastest such launch in the UK so far. All bikes in Sheffield will be free to hire for the first two weeks, and ofo collects no deposit when registering new users. Sheffield is ofo’s first city in the north of the UK and follows successful launches in Cambridge, Oxford, London and Norwich. The scheme is already used by 200 million users in 20 countries to make 32 million trips every day. Sheffield’s people will be
able to hire a lightweight three-speed bike with the click of a button via the ofo smartphone app, ride it anywhere in the city and lock it again for just 50p for a 30 minute journey. The entire fleet will be fitted with bright dynamo front lights, solar-powered rear lights and a handy front basket. They also have a hydraulicallyadjusted seatpost so riders of all heights can get comfortable in seconds. The company is leading the way on responsible operation of dockless bike sharing, working closely with Sheffield City Council to ensure the scheme provides a
valuable and reliable service for the public. Sheffield Councillor Jack Scott, Cabinet Member for Transport and Sustainability, said: “ofo coming to Sheffield is great news for this city. This type of bike sharing is set to change the way we get from A-to-B for the better. Not only will ofo provide an affordable and convenient transport option for many, but it will also promote the fantastic health benefits of cycling – reducing air pollution and boosting healthy lifestyles. OFO bikes are set to be a big hit across Sheffield “Sheffield Council has been working closely with
ofo to ensure that dockless bikes are used responsibly and considerately following their introduction. That’s why we support ofo’s approach of gradually increasing the bikes on Sheffield streets after gauging usage patterns. This will help ofo bikes serve the right areas and the right people – enriching and supplementing Sheffield’s existing transport options.” ofo’s eye-catching yellow bikes are hired through a smartphone app for just 50p for 30 minutes and can be picked up and dropped off anywhere that bike parking is
allowed. ofo does not require riders to pay a deposit before use. To access a bike, riders can simply download the ofo app and unlock their nearest bike via Bluetooth connection. Once their ride is complete, users simply close the lock to complete their ride and make it available for the next person to use. ofo also employs geofencing technology to ensure that riders use the bikes within the designated ‘Home Zone’ which is clearly visible in the app. From launch day, ofo will have a team of ‘marshals’ available seven days a week to answer any questions from users and ensure the service runs smoothly and that bikes are being parked responsibly.

Park known as “lungs of Darnall” set to get charitable status One of the city’s best-loved parks described as the “lungs of Darnall” is set to be awarded charitable status by the city council. The decision will mean that High Hazels Park, in the east of the city, will be protected for generations to come as a quality green space. Registration as a charity will secure the provision and maintenance of a park and recreation ground for use by the public to improve and maintain their quality of life. The park, which was first created in 1850 by William Jeffcock, the city’s first elected mayor, is a 20-hectare area in Darnall. In 1894, Sheffield City Council bought the land and house from the Duke of Norfolk and Mr Jeffcock for £10,875. In 1895, the land was first used as a public recreation ground and was classed as one of the finest parks within the city of Sheffield. In more recent times, the park has become one of the city’s most popular run routes and held various activities such as tennis and bowling, as well as continuing its close links with the nearby Tinsley Golf Club. Councillor Mary Lea, cabinet member for culture, parks and leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “This is brilliant news for High Hazels Park and the communities that use it. It is one of the city’s very best public spaces and with this
status now secured, it can only continue to thrive and grow, as well as making sure that improvements can happen. “I am personally thrilled as the park is in my patch and one of the very best places to relax and unwind in the city.” Following registration the park, as a charitable trust, will be subject to all the provisions of the Charities Act 2011 and will be regulated by the Charity Commission in the same way as current parks charities. All decisions will be made by Sheffield City Council’s cabinet as the sole trustee of the charity. Sylvia Hamilton from the
Friends of High Hazels Park, said: “Registering High Hazels Park as a Charitable Trust will secure its position for future generations. “High Hazels Park is a treasure in a very urban area and it has often been referred to as the lungs of Darnall. Its historical background is worth preserving. It is a site where all the varied members of our very diverse community come together to enjoy walking, playing football, tennis and cricket and use the very popular play areas.” The Council is set to agree the decision at cabinet on Wednesday 17 January.

I just re-homed a Blacksmith’s dog. I hadn’t had it home 30 minutes before it made a bolt for the door. A lorry carrying a load of snooker equipment has crashed on the M1... The driver is under a rest and the cues go back miles! Doctor: “Have you been getting enough exercise?” Me: “Does sex count as exercise?” Doctor: “Yes.” Me: “Then, No.” My doctor just told me I was suffering from paranoia... He didn’t actually say that, but I could tell it was what he was thinking! You know it’s starting to get cold outside when you trip over dog poo rather than stand in it! I was so cold today that my jaw started to freeze... So I gritted my teeth. People who say their wedding day is the BEST day of their lives... Have never had two chocolate bars fall from a vending machine at the same time! How do you weigh a chilli pepper? Give it a weigh, give it a weigh, give it a weigh now! What’s the best thing for a hangover? Drink loads the night before. I just bought a vintage Rolls Royce, but the budget didn’t cover a driver. So I spent all that money, and I’ve got nothing to chauffeur it. My girlfriend left me because she says I only ever think about football. I’m gutted, we’d been together for nearly three seasons. You can’t run through a camp site. You can only ran, because it’s past tents. Don’t kiss your wife with a runny nose. You might think it’s funny, but it’s snot.

100 Well Known Songs FROM “THE KING OF SINGALONG”
BRIAN DENNIS
LIVE SHOW • 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s HITS
The dream of working in musical theatre has come one step closer for young people in Sheffield who attend a local part-time theatre school. On December 14th, a casting director visited the school and recreated exactly what is required during an audition for a child actor in a West End show. Harry Blumenau, who is responsible for the children’s casting of Annie, Thriller Live, Show Boat and Kinky Boots in the West End paid a visit to Razzamataz Sheffield. Harry worked with students who are enrolled in Razz Project Intense, a new class offered by the theatre school designed to support students who wish to pursue a professional career within the performing arts. The specialist workshop run by Harry is an important benefit of Razz Project Intense because it allows the students to get a real feel for what it means to work as a professional performer. The workshop mirrored a real-life casting for Annie, which is currently appearing in the West End. Harry worked with the students on the song Hard Knock Life from the show and then listened to all students sing a short section of the song Tomorrow. Before the workshop, students had to prepare and learn the words of both songs, in much the same way as they would if this were a real audition. Once students were successful in the first phase of the audition, they would then be invited to a recall where they would have to show their own song. Students were therefore required to prepare a Musical Theatre song of their choice that would be suitable for an Annie audition and receive feedback from Harry. “We were really excited to give Razz Project Intense students such a true to life industry experience and have no doubt that this was a fantastic and stretching session for them,” says Helen Bell, Principal of Razzamataz Sheffield. “As well as giving the students more opportunity to build a strong technical skill base in dance, Razz Project Intense gives the experience and confidence to be better prepared for professional vocational college auditions.” During the workshop, students also got the opportunity to talk to Harry to gain an insight into what casting agents are looking for when selecting people for professional roles. A number of the students are represented by Top Talent Agency
and are already securing work in TV adverts, modelling and even appearing in short films. “We have more than 400 students at Razzamataz Sheffield and although many come to just have fun, keep fit and have a good time with their friends, we also have a large number who have strong aspirations to make performing arts their career,” explains Helen. “There is so much talent in Sheffield and it’s a real privilege for me and my team to give these youngsters the opportunity to explore where their future lies.” Razzamataz Sheffield has many performing opportunities throughout the year for all students as well as various specialist workshops working with a range of professional performers, agents and directors. Classes are available for children from the age of 2 through to 18 and include Razz Tots as well as Razz Project Intense. To enquire about availability, contact Helen Bell on sheffield@ razzamataz.co.uk or call 07979189177/0114 3030 455. For more information visit: sheffield.razzamataz.co.uk.

SHEFFIELD BID LAUNCHES PULSEPOINTS INITIATIVE Sheffield city centre will soon have more publicly accessible defibrillators than any other UK city, as Sheffield BID launches PulsePoints, a new initiative in partnership with Westfield Health Charitable Trust and the Yorkshire Ambulance Service. The ground-breaking initiative will see 12 life-saving defibrillators installed at multiple locations across the city centre, which will be accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A map of all PulsePoints will be produced and signposts will direct the public to their nearest defibrillator in the case of an emergency. Following the deaths of two men who suffered cardiac arrest in Sheffield city centre in 2017, Sheffield BID began work on the PulsePoints project, which is being funded by the BID and Westfield Health Charitable Trust, with support from Yorkshire Ambulance Service. It is hoped that by installing 12 publicly accessible defibrillators across the city, PulsePoints could save lives. Diane Jarvis, Sheffield BID Manager, said: “As part of the BID’s commitment to making Sheffield city centre safer and more accessible, we are working
VACANCIES
with Westfield Health Charitable Trust and the Yorkshire Ambulance Service to install these lifesaving defibrillators across the city. “We hope that by installing 12 publicly accessible defibrillators across the city centre, the PulsePoints initiative will help save lives on Sheffield’s streets.” In the case of an emergency, the public should call 999. They will be directed to their nearest defibrillator by the 999 phone call operator, and given an access code to the cabinet containing the defibrillator. They will then be guided through using the defibrillator until paramedics arrive. The Yorkshire Ambulance will be demonstrating how to use a defibrillator at the PulsePoints launch, taking place on 16 January at the Virgin Money Lounge on Fargate. A NEW YEAR AND A NEW LOOK TO THOR-GODS OF ROCK You know the saying, “New Year, New You”. Well, the same can apply about rock bands. 2017 was a great year for Sheffield based rockers, Thor-Gods Of Rock. With milestones such as headlining their first big festival in North Wales, playing countless packed out venues and playing their 200th show, it’s fair to say it was their best year so far but closed with a bitter-sweet ending. Lead singer, Lee Dodge, told us “it was a fantastic year for Thor but there’s always a flip side. In December we lost Mike (Mike Kaperys, bass) and Kev (Kevin Hill, guitar) but welcomed 2 fantastic new members. Mike got a great promotion at work and Kev wanted to devote more time to his family. It’s always sad to lose members but life goes on, we’re still the best of mates, they’ll be our first ports of call if we need a stand-in and we’ll certainly not lose contact. In fact, I was on stage with Kev on New Years Eve. For a little, one off, duo show.” From talking to Lee, you can see that the band clearly had a brother-like relationship so you’d think finding replacements would be hard. However, it seems that the queue to become Gods Of Rock was bigger than expected. “We has over 200 applicants in about 2 weeks for the 2 positions. There were some fantastic players contacting us but it didn’t take us long to find the right two, and just in time for 2018!” So the big question is ‘who are they?’ Well, Lee told us. “We’ve got John Hardman on guitar and Scott Jordan on bass. These guys really stood out from the crowd. We found that we had some top notch players apply and some great performers, but Scott and John are both. They’ve both got
bags of experience and have been on the scene for a long time so know the game inside out. We couldn’t have wished for anybody better. We’re really lucky that they were available at a time when we needed to fill 2 huge pairs of boots! Mike and Kev were always going to be tough acts to follow and big boots to fill, but in the short time that John and Scott have been with us, it feels like a seamless change over.” So was there any scepticism? “We’ve been asked ‘Is it better? Is it worse?’ We tell them it’s just different. We’ve, basically, swapped 2 tremendous performers for 2 tremendous performers. If anything, it’s brought a fresh enthusiasm to James and Joe (James Tulley, keyboards and Joe Tulley, Drums) and myself by having 2 new view points. They officially started with us at Barnsley Trades Club and The Nethergreen WMC in December so we can hit the ground running in 2018.” And what does the New Year have in store for a rock band at the top of their field? Quite a lot actually. Lee continued “There’ll be new stage clothes, a bigger show, new songs, it’s a proper freshen up but still 100% Thor. Our schedule is pretty full already. We’ve got quite a few new venues to look
forward to this year and in February we’re having a big show for our 4th anniversary that we’re really looking forward to. We’ll be at The Embassy in Sheffield on Saturday 17th February to mark 4 years since we started the band and we’ll be joined by our mates, R’n’FR. They’ll open the show and we’ll be doing an extra long show to follow. As well as the new players, there’ll be a few upgrades to the show this year too so watch this space.” The anniversary show also has extra significance for 1 member of each band. Lee explains “yeah, myself and Timmy (Timmy Wilcox, Bass player with R’n’FR) are celebrating our birthday’s a few days after. Timmy’s is on the 19th and mine I’m 32 on the 20th, so it’s kind of a triple Birthday Bash weekend, Thor, Tim and Me, so we’re going to need one hell of a cake.”

TOP ‘TURN’ BERNIE CLIFTON GETS BEHIND THE ‘DIRTY STOP OUT’S GUIDE TO WORKING MEN’S CLUBS’ Bernie Clifton is the latest performer to sing the praises of a brand new book that majors on the boom years of South Yorkshire’s clubscene. The BBC Radio Sheffield presenter that recently performed on BBC’s The Voice joined author Neil Anderson at a signing sessions in Waterstones in Chesterfield. Bernie Clifton was still selling vacuum cleaners, door-todoor, before he got his first big break – a Christmas spot at the newly opened Newbold Working Men’s Club in Chesterfield the early 1960s. His talent was immediately
spotted by the venue’s resident drummer Harry Schofield who helped him secure early gigs around the region. Bernie Clifton said: “As a result of that I never stopped working and I eventually gravitated up to the nightclubs. But the Working Men’s Clubs were so important for providing that based.” He has fond memories of the places and always knew he was playing second fiddle to the true star of the show – the bingo. “Top of the bill was always the bingo”, he added. “You would be subservient to to the many houses of bingo. When the bingo was called
there was a cathedrallike hush – it was sacrosanct.” The book has sold in droves over Christmas and even got the thumbs up from Sheffield’s own Peter Stringfellow. Neil Anderson said: “He reminded me has the movement to thank for his success. He was inspired by his uncle who was a leading committee man at Pitsmoor Working Men’s Club.” You can grab a copy of the ‘Dirty Stop Outs Guide to Working Mens Clubs’ now by calling The Mercury office on 0114 276 3701 priced £13.95 + delivery or pick one up at the office

VISIT YORKSHIRE A Coast of Contrasts
A short break on the Yorkshire Coast will serve up glorious coastline, delicious cuisine, beautiful countryside, outdoor adventures and spectacular views.
STUNNING LOCATIONS Stretching from Spurn Point to Saltburn-by-the- Sea, this unique stretch of coastline boasts a string of gorgeous and very different seaside towns and villages. From traditional resorts such as Bridlington, Filey, Scarborough and Whitby, to picture-perfect fishing communities like Robin Hood’s Bay, Runswick Bay and Staithes, many of which are in the stunning North York Moors National Park. There’s nothing like a day on the beach to make you hungry. The Yorkshire Coast’s fish and chip shops are officially among the best in the world - both Whitby’s Quayside and the town’s Magpie Café regularly win awards.
Pavilion Complex and the famous Whalebone Arch. Historians will enjoy finding out about its connection to Captain Cook and the role it played in the whaling and jet industries at the Captain Cook Memorial Museum; steam fans can board the North Yorkshire Moors Railway at its northernmost station and those with a literary bent can follow in the footsteps of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. GET INVOLVED You’ll find some of the country’s best surfing beaches, with Scarborough’s North and South Bays being popular spots to catch a wave. Kayaking and paddleboarding are also becoming very popular in the area. Test yourself on World Cup mountain-biking trails in Dalby Forest, explore ‘top-of-the-world’ cycling at Sutton Bank National Park Centre or challenge yourself to breathtaking Tour de Yorkshire routes.
A COAST TO BOAST ABOUT Filey is the perfect place to take a walk, fly a kite, build a sandcastle, snooze in a deck chair or maybe do a spot of bird watching from its Brigg. Home to miles of glorious beach, Filey is fantastic for families and regularly hosts music, movies, exhibitions, food fairs, the Filey Folk Festival and more from its main arts venue, the Evron Centre. Glorious clean beaches, nature, history, sporting fun, independent shops and great entertainment, Bridlington has something for everyone. The preRoman harbour and characterful Old Town are must-sees for any history buff and for nature lovers, going on a seashore safari, a WONDERFUL WHITBY Fish and chips, history and culture, boat trip around the bay or bird watching at Bempton Cliffs are all views and festivals, vampires experiences not to be missed. For and Goths, it’s all on offer in Whitby. West Cliff is worth a visit, lively and energetic endeavours, East Riding Leisure Bridlington it’s full of fun with a paddling is bursting with high-tech fun and pool, Skateboard Park, bumper fitness and Bridlington Spa hosts boats, trampolines and crazy the best dance, comedy and music golf. It’s also home to Whitby performers. Leisure Centre, the Whitby Scarborough boasts stunning scenery, glorious beaches and much to see and do – is it any wonder that people have been flocking there for nearly 400 years now? You can still immerse yourself in its history with Scarborough Castle and the Rotunda Museum of geology, or venture down to the seafront to see the amusement arcades, ice cream parlours, shellfish stalls and beach huts. Outdoor adventures can be found all around: try boating in Peasholm Park; take a ride on the miniature railway or watch a performance at the Stephen Joseph Theatre.

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
Well, it’s now properly 2018, and I’ve just enjoyed my first session of the year! When I say ‘enjoyed’, what I really mean is ‘been’. I got soaking wet, the kind of wet that even gets down the back of your neck to leave your back cold and clingy, that drips off the peak of your cap, the kind that when your nose starts running, you don’t have a dry sleeve to wipe it with… that kind of wet; it was absolutely battering it down! I didn’t catch anything of note either, as I spent four long, cold, soggy hours thrashing the local canal to a foam, changing jig heads, changing lures, changing retrieves, dropshotting, in fact changing almost everything to try and tempt a decent fish, but to no avail! I just hope it gets better… In truth, it already has. I’ve had a very pleasing start to the new year, maintaining my associations with a number of top tackle brands, and, after a year ploughing a furrow as a ‘Team Member’ I’ve been offered a consultancy position with Spotted Fin, which I’m very pleased about. After moving from a major bait brand last year as a result of trying to keep everything ‘under one roof’, and having some super results with my new products, I’m especially looking forward to the coming year, as I’ll have a lot more input into testing new products. I will be obliged to ‘do’ or show or two, and will probably have to go fishing more, which sounds like a result to me! The new year brings new waters too. I’m a big believer in the angling club. I’ve heard that fewer anglers are joining these happy bands, which astounds me if it’s true, and I really can’t understand why. Usually run by a band of lusty volunteers, the club forms something which you can really take part in, whether it be on committee, work parties, bailiffing, or just helping out in general, it’s something you can help ‘take ownership’ of and improve, instead of having to put up with the day ticket owners foibles, so why not try one this year? I’ve changed a few club cards, kept a few more, and intend to try some new venues just to keep my interest levels high. I’m not an angler who would want to join a syndicate, as I can’t envisage paying an awful lot of money to fish just one, or a very small number of waters, so for me, club cards are the way to pay a little, for a lot of fishing. Luckily, I get to fish midweek, so the weekend rat race isn’t something I have to contend with, and I appreciate it doesn’t suit everyone, but is there any better value fishing than clubs? For instance, I’ve taken on a Fenton and District Angling ticket again, offering a range of still waters, super stretches of the River Dove, and miles of canal, where I can fish for bream, carp, tench, perch, pike or whatever, and it’s cost me just £38! If I fish twice a week, it will cost me less than fifty pence a day! Admittedly, my total spend on club tickets is around £250 for the year, but I reckon I’ve got somewhere in the region of one hundred waters to go at, so I’ll never be bored, I can fish all year round for any species I choose, for a fiver a week! If you fish a day ticket water every week, at a cost of ten to twenty five pounds per session… well, you do the maths… I can tell you that it works out blummin’ expensive, and when you get there, you may not get the peg you want anyway! Whatever you choose for this coming year, however, and wherever you fish, I wish you all the best for the forthcoming season. Remember one thing; it’s about having fun and enjoying it. If you are not harming or damaging your quarry, aren’t disturbing anyone else, and you are enjoying it, then you are doing it right… and don’t let anyone else tell you different… do it your way!

COUNTY SENIOR FOOTBALL with Michael Clarke
The County Senior returned to action after a fortnights break for the Christmas and New Year holidays. There was a slightly reduced fixture list due to a number of the leagues’ teams playing in County Cup action. There were also the inevitable postponements due to inclement weather. Premier Division Frecheville ended a run of four consecutive draws in the league, as they beat Denaby Main 6-1 at the UPVC Trade Centre Ground. Daniel Bainbridge, Samuel Drake, Leon Howarth (2) and Jake Thompson were all on target for Frecheville. AFC Penistone Church Reserves started the year in fine style with a 5-0 win over Millmoor Juniors at the Memorial Ground. Penistone remain in second place behind Grimethorpe Sports, but only on goal difference. Division One League leaders Dodworth Miners Welfare stretched their 100% start to the season to 11 games, with a hard-fought 2-1 home win over Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves. Dodworth’s day was to get better, as second placed High Green Villa slipped to a 5-2 defeat at home against AFC Dronfield. The result means Dodworth lead stands at 15 points. Goals from Daniel Barnett, Todd Guest and Robert Womack helped third placed Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 to a 3-1 win against Silkstone United, despite being down to a10 men. Caribbean Sports moved up four places, from second bottom, after a 3-2 away win over Brinsworth Whitehill. Javid Heffernan, Andre Redhead and Anthony Holmes all made the score-sheet for Caribbean. Division Two Burngreave FC made it five straight league victories, as they beat Caribbean Sports Reserves 4-1 at Firvale Academy. Burngreave lead the way on goal difference over Boynton Sports. Boynton were also victorious on Saturday, with a 3-1 away win over AFC Dronfield Reserves, thanks to goals from Wayne Garrity, John Mellor and Marc Peacock. A hat-trick from James Tucker inspired Sheffield Bankers Reserves to a 4-0 home win over Thurcroft Miners Institute. Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Development made it a winning start to the new year, with a 3-1 win over North Gawber Colliery Reserves at Park Road.

FIXTURE BREAK BITTERSWEET Rotherham United found their form over the busy festive period, recording an impressive string of results to climb the third tier table, but they will take a break from league action this weekend with the absence of a fixture leaving in-form defender Semi Ajayi with mixed feelings about the chance to recharge the batteries. The Millers centre back, who has turned in a number of notable performances to establish himself at the heart of the defence says that there are positives and negatives to the break from first team fixtures this weekend. “With the run that we’ve been on, the fact that the games have been coming thick and fast has probably been a good thing because we’ve been able to continue the momentum,” Ajayi said. “A game at the weekend meant we could have continued that but at the same time it will be good to get some rest and get a few bodies back. Tayls is back
in training and hopefully we can get Frecks back so the break is bittersweet and it’s a good thing and a bad thing.” However, upon further consideration, Ajayi continued to explain the opportunity to allow players extra time to recover would be beneficial in the long run as the Millers look to move themselves into the Play-off places in the second half of the season. “We’ve had a lot of games over the festive period which means the break probably comes at the right time in terms of that,” he continued. “There are a few tired legs and little bits of illness going around the camp so hopefully everyone can come back fresh ready to face Oldham. “We’re definitely looking up the table rather than down and we want to chase the teams ahead of us now and pick up as many points as we can. We especially want to do that in the big games against other contenders and then we can make up even more ground.”
disappointed by the group as we reach the halfway stage of the campaign. “Their attitude has been spot on,” he continued. “Nobody is moaning and nobody is groaning and it obviously helps when you win football matches. Psychology is king in all professional sports but you’re not going to get it all your own way all of the time. Character is key and I’ve said that all along. I think if you have a really good dressing room and togetherness and they put the effort in for each other, it’s worth 10 points a season. I’m not saying we have the most talented team in the league but they’re really fighting for each other and picking up points.”

Darren Ferguson felt his side created enough chances to stay in the FA Cup, after bowing out of the competition at the third-round stage. Calvin Andrew’s first half header sent Rochdale through, and left the Rovers manager thinking of what might have been after several missed opportunities after the break. He said: “I think there were a lot of good things about our performance, particularly in the second half, but we’re very disappointed to be
out of the cup given how much we threw at them. That’s two games on the bounce that we’ve conceded soft goals and it gave them something to hold on to, we had a lot of pressure and maybe if we had that at 0-0 it would have been a different result. The first goal was always going to be important given the opposition, it was their only effort on target and we need to stop that from happening.” Ferguson reckoned his side were much better after half-time, following some
tactical alterations at the interval based on what he had seen in the opening 45 minutes. He added: “There were a couple of things we changed after the first half, we wanted to stop Andrew and Cannon causing us problems. We made the changes and as a manager you’re then hoping that someone can produce that bit of quality, Alfie Beestin had a great chance and John Marquis hit a post so it just wasn’t going for us.”
Rovers five-match unbeaten run was ended by Rochdale, as the home side could not convert numerous second-half opportunities in this Emirates FA Cup third round clash. Calvin Andrew’s first-half header, as he flicked home a set-piece, was the difference between the two sides. After a slow start to the game, with both sides having little to show for, it was the visitors who took the lead. Niall Mason fouled Andy Cannon on the right-hand side, and Joe Bunney whipped in the setpiece. Bunney’s free-kick was met at the back post by Andrew, who headed home into the corner for the opener. Rovers did edge their way back into the game as the half progressed, and came close to
equalising just after the half-hour mark. Rodney Kongolo’s ball in from the right was met by John Marquis in the middle, but his strike was straight at Josh Lillis who could claim comfortably. Matty Blair was next to try his luck for the home side, as Mason’s ball in was cleared out to the right-back, but his shot from 25 yards out was saved by Lillis once more. Ian Lawlor then had to be alert to prevent Dale from doubling the lead on the stroke of half-time, as Bunney’s cross from the left almost crept in at the far post, but the Irishman got across well to tip around the post. Rovers came out firing after the break and went very close to taking the lead within 10 minutes of the interval. Rowe’s cross
into the box was met by the un-marked Alfie Beestin, but Lillis superbly denied the youngster from close-range, before a scramble in the area lead to Blair’s follow-up shot being blocked by Bunney. Rochdale went on the attack themselves, and almost extended their lead.through their captain. The Rovers’ defence thought they had cleared the ball away from danger, but they could only tee up Ian Henderson, who struck a volley past Lawlor’s far post. Bunney then went close again for the visitors, as his left-footed drive whistled past the post, in what was a real let-off for Rovers. Rovers again came forward, though, and went agonisingly close to levelling the score. Kongolo’s hard work and neat turn down the right

MILLERS READY TO GO AGAIN Rotherham United boss Paul Warne says he has given his side an ‘elongated weekend’ in the absence of a first team fixture, as the club get set for the second half of the Sky Bet League One season. The Millers manager admits that there is some fatigue in the camp after a cluster of games over Christmas and the New Year but is keen to return with a refreshed squad when they travel to Oldham Athletic on 13th January. “Everyone is a bit jaded. We’ve been in a couple of days this week and I’ve given them an elongated weekend where they can go and spend time with their families and just get away from the football club,” Warne said. “Then we’ll come back again next week and train and then it’s four-and-a-bit to five months if we’re lucky to really have a go at it and see where it takes us.” Warne’s summer recruitment placed emphasis on bringing in players that would do no less than give 100% for the shirt and admits he has not been

saw him play the ball inside for Marquis, but the striker’s shot from the edge of the area cannoned back off a post. A Rovers free-kick then found Rowe down the left, and his cross into the box was met by the head of the rising Andy Butler, but he could only guide his header wide of the far post. Rowe was causing a lot of problems down the left-hand side, and he was in behind again after playing a onetwo with Coppinger, but fired just over as Rovers tried desperately to stay in the FA Cup. Rovers return to league action next weekend, with the visit of Plymouth Argyle to the Keepmoat Stadium in Sky Bet League One.

THOMAS FIRES BLADES INTO HAT
United rewarded the 1,110 Blades fans who made the trip to Ipswich with a third round victory in the Emirates FA Cup. Nathan Thomas scored the only goal - a cracker into the top corner. As expected, Wilder made changes for the trip to Suffolk - eight in total - Baldock, Basham and Stearman remained in the starting line-up from Monday’s encounter at Derby. The bench
included two 18-yearolds - Sheffielder Slater and Welsh U21s international Norrington-Davies. The opening ten minutes saw Ipswich attempt to gain the early momentum. They won two corners and from one a header hit Lafferty, prompting handball claims. Celina also had a shot deflected over for the home side. United’s first attack saw Thomas drag a shot wide
but he was to be influential during the half. He opened the scoring on 25 minutes, smashing into the top corner from outside the box, giving Bialkowski no chance, following a Lavery lay-off. Thomas robbed Hyam to open up an opportunity for Lavery to have a shot saved and then the goalscorer looked like he would have to be replaced after lengthy treatment but
convinced the Blades management team he was fit enough to continue. The only other notable chance of the first half also saw Thomas involved in the build-up before Sharp laid off for Basham, who turned Hyam but curled his shot wide. Thomas succumbed to his injury at the break and was replaced by Slater as United almost took advantage of a couple of defensive
ATTITUDE DELIGHTS CHRIS Chris Wilder was quick to praise his senior players following Saturday’s FA Cup success at Ipswich Town. A superb strike from Nathan Thomas proved to be the decisive goal at Portman Road, but it was the performance of his team as a whole that pleased Wilder. He remarked: “I’m not surprised by the consistent attitude of my players and how they go about it in what was not the most glamorous of FA Cup ties. We made a few changes, but we’ve come and do and a job and come through it unscathed. We’ve produced a solid performance and should have taken the game away from the opposition, I thought there were some excellent performances and

my senior players were absolutely outstanding. The likes of Stearman, Wright, Basham, Lafferty and Sharp demonstrated a first-class attitude and that’s a fantastic example for the other players involved. It was a great goal worthy of winning the tie, but I’m more delighted we’ve not just gone out of the back having made changes.” The boss added: “We’ve not taken our eye off the ball, I told the players I wouldn’t accept excuses and our game management was spot on. They had very few chances and it was a very good performance from a group of players that haven’t played much recently. I’m also delighted we’ve got an excellent young player on the pitch in the second-half and he’s showed what he’s about.” Regan Slater cemented himself in Chris Wilder’s plans moving forward, with a bone crunching tackle at Ipswich Town that was certainly noted by the boss. The manager, who has high hopes

for the 18-year-old, threw him on at halftime following an injury to goalscorer Nathan Thomas and Slater did his chances of more game time in the future no harm at all. Wilder remarked: “I know we’re early into the year, but the highlight for me was that tackle from Regan, that was made in Sheffield! Duffy was sitting with us, looking at him thinking where has that come. He cemented their lad with a proper tackle, he’s a good kid and I’m delighted for him. I know what it is like to be from the city and make a mark at your hometown club and I wanted to make sure he took the plaudits at the end.” The United chief added: “We’ve got a great Academy, a lot of the praise should go to the people involved there, the scouting is excellent, know we’re looking for those with us to kick on. They’ve got to be good enough, that’s crucial, I won’t just play them for the sake, Regan deserves his chance and I would have loved to have got NorringtonDavies on to. Regan did well, he
showed people what he’s about, know he must get his head down in the U23s and wait for his next opportunity.”
lapses. Lafferty fired over after Sharp drew out goalkeeper Bialkowski and then a mistake saw Sharp lay off to Lavery but Chambers kicked off the line. Ipswich’s first chance of the second half arrived on 67 minutes but Connolly headed over Celina’s cross. United hit back with Sharp’s reverse pass putting Carruthers in the clear and Baldock’s shot towards the near post - Bialkowski saved both. Donaldson took over from Lavery in the final 20 minutes as the Blades continued to keep Ipswich at arm’s length.
Slater went close to doubling the lead, shooting over from the edge of the box after he was given space. Fleck replaced Sharp late on and immediately hit a first time shot, which was just wide, and the home side struggled to get out of their own half to test United’s rearguard. There was one final Ipswich opportunity, three minutes into added time, following a crude challenge by Carter-Vickers on McGoldrick. However, Connolly met Celina’s free-kick but his flicked header flew wide.
DO BLADES REALLY WANT A CUP RUN? WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH Not so many years ago, most fans will remember the unique thrill of FA Cup third round day. Admittedly, that was back in the day when the Blades never joined the competition before Janaury, so this season makes a welcome change from dreary November matches before a few thousand spectators watching matches devoid of any atmosphere. Even Nigel Clough’s glory run to Wembley was preceded by decidedly unexciting trips to places such as Colchester. However as a fan, I have to admit to being a little disappointed that in their current position, the cup is apparently seen as a distraction by the Blades boss. I say this because I would love us to progress and challenge our style against some of the Premier League teams
- not necessarily the top half dozen, but to see us up against some of the also-rans from the lower half of the league would really give us an idea of how we might fare next year if, as is currently entirely possible, we find ourselves up there come the end of the season. The older fans will remember the John Harris team of the seventies, which went up with an oldfashioned approach to the game and went eleven games unbeaten before Georgie Best’s wondergoal against our makeshift left back (Gil Reece). This team evokes many memories of that side, in terms of Chris Wilder’s win-or-bust approach to the Championship this season. Moreover we’ve always been a bit of giant-killing team when it comes
to the Cup - Neil Warnock in 2003 (the famous Triple Assault Season), and Steve Thompson’s caretaker reign in 1998 come to mind as recent examples of the Blades going far beyond whatt was expected in cup competitions, while the second leg of the semi-final against Spurs will be a match that lives long in the memory of younger Blades fans. Admittedly a home tie against Preston hardly represents a glamour tie, but at least the balls were kind in bringing us to Bramall Lane for a winnable match come the end of the month, and the possibility of a decent draw in Round 5. We do have the consolation at least, that, however Chris decides to treat the Preston game in terms of selection, we know that the eleven sent out will be sweating blood for the cause - so roll on 27th January!

STALEMATE IN GAME OF FEW CHANCES The Owls and Carlisle must go again at Hillsborough on Tuesday week to reach the fourth round of the Emirates FA Cup after a goalless draw in Cumbria. A game of few chances lit up in the second half, when either side might have engineered a way through. But both defences held firm to
ensure a replay will be needed to separate two teams who each went for victory but had to settle for a share of the spoils. A bright start from Wednesday almost created an early breakthrough as Atdhe Nuhiu rattled the bar inside three minutes from a Liam Palmer cross. Nuhiu then forced Jack Bonham into a diving save before Gary
Liddle took the ball off the big man’s foot just as he was about to pull the trigger. Almost half an hour was on the clock until the hosts threatened, with ex-Owls loanee Hallam Hope shooting across Joe Wildsmith but wide. That was about as good as it got in a low key first half but the contest opened up right from the start of the second. Reggie Lambe
unleashed a fierce long ranger that whistled over the bar and Lucas Joao headed another Palmer cross just wide at the other end. Joao went closer still on the hour when his deft header came back into play off the foot of the post and Carlisle had a narrow escape. Ross Wallace smashed inches wide of the target with Bonham beaten before Carlisle
150TH ANNIVERSARY SHIRT NOW ON SALE
had the ball in the net through a Sam Cosgrove effort only for the linesman’s flag to intervene. Back the match went Wednesday’s way and Bonham pulled off a fabulous save on 73 minutes to keep out a
powerful header from Nuhiu. Both sides pressed in the closing stages to force the win but neither could find the edge required and the third round tie heads over to S6 in ten days’ time..
MEETING JOS Question: “What kind of football will you play? Will it be conservative football or attacking football?” Answer: “Successful football.” With journalists and fans having done their diligence on the new Wednesday manager’s style of play, Luhukay was quizzed in his maiden press conference. He explained: “I want and we want to be successful so that is what I intend our kind of football to be. There is no set formula to play football, there are different ways and different factors. Some games will be different to others. The derby on Friday will be different to the next game, certainly. So my kind of football is the kind of football that will help Wednesday win matches and take the club forward.” There is plenty of work ahead for Jos Luhukay and that began yesterday as the new manager took his first training session at the club. But one particular fixture ranks higher than all those at this moment and that is the Sheffield derby. Wednesday head to Bramall Lane for Luhukay’s first game in front of the Sky Sports cameras and he said: “At this moment we look
only to the next game on Friday. You must always keep an eye in more directions and we will try to do what’s best for the club. But Friday is a highlight day. Derbies in every country are highlight days. There will be emotion, atmosphere, passion, a special feeling and these things will bring extra motivation for us to play good football. The game is not about me. I do not want to be the hero, only someone who does a very good job. I will be very happy for the team if we win on Friday but it is not about me.” Luhukay has plenty of derby experience from his 22 year managerial career in Germany and he added: “Borussia Monchengladbach against FC Cologne was a big one. Hertha and Union Berlin had 75,000 people at the derby. Two clubs in one city is the same as here. That made it a challenge to be the best team.”
