CALL FOR RESIDENTS TO HELP SHAPE A MINING STATUE FOR DONCASTER Doncaster residents are being invited to share their mining stories and showcase any related memorabilia to help shape a quality piece of public art that celebrates the town’s proud mining heritage. A special open forum has been set up at Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery On Tuesday 23 January between 1 and 2.30pm. Here the acclaimed artist Laurence Edwards will be on hand to listen to people and look at mining related artefacts. This will help him devise the style and design of the artwork which will
represent Doncaster’s former mining communities and what mining meant to the whole borough. The final design will be revealed later in the spring at a special exhibition. Doncaster Council intends to launch a crowdfunding campaign once the design is unveiled to help meet the cost of the statue which will be located in a prominent town centre location easily accessible to Doncaster residents. Nick Stopforth, Head of Libraries and Culture, said:
“This event is an open invite for people to help shape a piece of public art that celebrates our mining heritage. We are asking people to come along and share their mining related stories, fond memories and show us any related memorabilia which will help our artist – Laurence Edwards – capture what mining meant to Doncaster residents in his design.” Laurence will also be giving a talk after the open forum at the Museum about his work and his creative thoughts so far.

NEW TREES TAKE ROOT IN SHEFFIELD More than 1,200 young trees will take root along Sheffield’s streets this winter as the annual tree planting season continues. Sheffield is one of only a handful of local authorities in the UK who are benefitting from a fully-funded provision to replace street trees on a one for one basis. This is the sixth successive season of tree planting by Amey as part of the Council’s Streets Ahead highways maintenance programme – and will bring the total number of replacement highway trees in Sheffield to almost 6,000 since the programme began in 2012. At up to 2.5 metres high, the eight to ten-year-old container-grown trees are carefully tended through their first season to give
them the best possible start in life. Trees planted in the early years of the Streets Ahead programme are already doing well, with a good canopy spread and girth. The vigorous young trees being planted will replace trees which have been removed from highways because they were unhealthy, dangerous or damaging to the highway and neighbouring property, or because they are creating access issues. This year, the new trees have been selected from a range of different species, all chosen for their suitability for the Sheffield highway environment, vigour and health. Streets Ahead arborist, Dan Bright, said that the 4,500 trees planted in previous years were showing good signs of
growth, with only very few needing to be replaced because they hadn’t established. “We take great care when planting and tending for our new young trees, by preparing the ground well and building in a pipe to make sure the water we give them in their first season gets delivered straight to their young roots. “The fact that only around two per cent of the new trees have failed to establish in the first five years, all of which have been replaced, is testament to that hard work. Highways are a tough environment for young trees to flourish and so we are incredibly pleased with the health of our new street tree stock here in Sheffield.” Said Dan. Tree planting season takes
/THEMERCURYNEWSPAPER
place between October and March as it’s when trees are dormant and least likely to suffer stress. Cabinet member for Environment and Street Scene at Sheffield City Council, Councillor Bryan Lodge said: “Trees form an important part of our city’s streets and those trees which have been planted as part of the Streets Ahead programme will ensure a sustainable and varied tree stock for years to come. “The street trees that have been replaced are now more suitable for their environment which means that our streets can remain green with a varied age profile of trees. “Not only have replacement trees been planted over the last five years, but additional street trees can be seen
across the city, securing Sheffield’s green credentials for hundreds of years.” Streets Ahead is about ensuring we have roads, pavements and a street scene to be proud of. In addition, it presents the city with a unique opportunity to sustainably manage, increase and maintain its diverse street tree stock over a 25-year period. More than 65,000 trees have been planted across Sheffield in the last three years, including those planted as part of the Streets Ahead contract and those in parks and woodlands included in the Council’s community forestry programme. SAINSBURY’S INSPIRES SHEFFIELD COMMUNITY TO COME TOGETHER AND TACKLE FOOD WASTE Sheffield’s first Community Fridge opened in the Edge Café on January 15th. Sainsbury’s has funded over 30 Community Fridges across the country – to help tackle surplus food waste The University of Sheffield will play host to the city’s first ever ‘Community Fridge’, an initiative made possible through funding obtained from Sainsbury’s and will be trialled with the support of environmental charity Hubbub UK in a growing effort to tackle food waste. The fridge, located in the Edge Café on Endcliffe Crescent will be open every day to enable students and staff to share surplus food and for members of the community to help themselves to quality food that would otherwise be wasted. The University of Sheffield is calling all students and staff departments across the University to donate surplus food from 15th January onwards. The fridge will launch at 10am following action from the Students Union and Accommodation & Commercial Services (ACS) to win the funding. A Sainsbury’s spokesperson commented:
“It’s great to see Sheffield come together as a community to tackle this growing issue of food waste. Community Fridges are a simple way to make sure healthy, perishable food gets put to good use and they also serve a much wider role in bringing communities together. The community spirit here is something to be proud of and we hope that the fridge helps locals to waste less food.” Gavin Brown, Head of Commercial Services for ACS added: “We are delighted to have received the funding from Sainsbury’s and for the opportunity to support the campaign. It’s a great way to help reduce food waste by putting unwanted food to good use, whilst helping our students to save money and get behind the cause”. The Edge Café Community Fridge will be open every day from 8am-10pm.

WORLD’S BIGGEST 5K ON ITS WAY TO SHEFFIELD FOR FIRST TIME Thrillseekers will have the chance to roll back the years and conquer the world’s biggest fun-run – featuring HUGE obstacles – when it comes to the region for the first time in 2018. Gung-Ho! Seriously Fun 5k will take adults, and kids, back to the days of Total Wipeout, Fun House and It’s A Knockout as they clamber over and through giant inflatables. The huge, fun-filled course – which includes giant mazes, walls, gauntlets and slides amongst other obstacles – will be filled with enough air to inflate more than 75 MILLION footballs, and comes to Rother Valley Country Park, Sheffield, on Saturday 8th September. Brains behind the event Alex Winters, a former Cbeebies presenter, came up with the idea while watching an episode of Ninja Warrior back in 2014. He said: “I grew up watching some of the great, classic TV shows of yesteryear like Fun House, It’s a Knockout and Gladiators. “Like many others I dreamed of taking part in something like that, but never got the chance! Now I am giving the people of Sheffield the chance to roll back the years and act like a kid again! “This will be a day out like no other. Anybody of any shape or size will be able to get round the course and we guarantee they will have an absolute blast in the process. “We promise fun, thrills and spills for everyone taking part. So come on Sheffield, show us how Gung-Ho! you can go!” More than 100,000 people have taken on GungHo! since Alex first dreamed up the idea of a giant
inflatable obstacle course for all the family, with tens of thousands more expected after 22 events over a seven-month UK tour in 2018. Alex added: “This will be our fourth year of touring, and we guarantee this will be the best year yet. Since we started I’ve wanted to bring Gung-Ho! to Sheffield and now we finally get the chance. I can’t wait! “We have added new obstacles to make sure the course is as fun as it can be for 2018! “We can’t wait to see as many people as possible duck, weave, climb and slide their way across the course. Tickets increase in price the closer we get to the event so book up now!” Thousands of pounds are expected to be raised for good causes thanks to people taking part for charity, adding to tens of thousands of pounds already raised for good causes at previous events. Participants can also go Gung-Ho! in aid of the event’s national charity partner BBC Children in Need. Runners, who must be at least 4ft tall, receive a free bib with race number, Gung-Ho! t-shirt and headband, while any spectators can attend for free. Up to 5,000 people can take part on the day. Tickets and more information are available at www.begung-ho.co.uk. Check out Gung-Ho! updates by searching ‘Gung-Ho!’ on Facebook and on Twitter, at @begungho.

Venus the planet of love is going to be squaring up to Saturn the planet of structure. In the first half of the week Mercury is also in conjunction with the dreamy energies of Neptune. There could be some doubts, confusion or some home truths shared around a key relationship. Call for more...
Your ruling planet Venus is challenged by the rather restrictive influence of Saturn. With Neptune also engulfing the more logical energies of Mercury, you may find it difficult to maintain your boundaries should anyone seek to tap into your natural goodwill. Call for more astral advice...
Friendships can be the source of great inspiration this week, but not everyone you encounter will necessarily share the same values as you. In fact, there could even be a little bit of jealousy washing around. Give people the benefit of the doubt Taurus. Call for more news and advice...
This is perhaps not the best of weeks to be rather frivolous with your resources. Yet despite this, there may be something that really captivates your interest that you do actually want to invest some money into. But whatever it is that might intrigue you, calculate its benefits. Call for more...
Someone you encounter professionally, though friendly, may still need to be dealt with in a more formal way. They could be carefully reviewing how you interact, and your ideas need to be realistic and workable to truly win their goodwill and approval. Call for more astral advice...

Saturn can help you to open up your prospects step-bystep. However, it also forges a jarring link to Venus this week, and as much as the new moon in your sector of relating sees you wanting to think the best about others, it’s also going to be very important to be realistic about them too. The following are currently open for public comment: Sheffield City Council’s Budget Consultation 2018-19 Sheffield City Council wants to hear from residents and businesses to help them decide spending priorities so that they can set the Council’s budget for the next year (April 2018 to March 2019). To help inform their approach to the budget, they also want to hear about your experiences of using services in Sheffield. Public meetings are being held across the city where you can learn more about the Council’s budget and ask questions of senior Councillors and Council officers. Thursday 18 January 2018, 6pm to 8pm, The Circle, 33 Rockingham Lane, Sheffield Wednesday 24 January 2018 , 6pm to 8pm, Woodseats Methodist Church, Holmhirst Road, S8 0GS Tuesday 23rd January 6.00 8.00pm at Stocksbridge library, Manchester Road, Stocksbridge, Sheffield S36 1 DH
Improving assisted travel on railways – Office of Rail and Road Closes Tuesday 30 January 2018, 11.59pm The Office of Rail and Road is consulting on potential improvements to Assisted Travel. This consultation includes: Asking for views on how passenger awareness of Assisted Travel might be increased. Highlighting the user experience of Assisted Travel and asking what action could be taken to improve the reliability of assistance for passengers. Seeking views on how training for company staff could be strengthened. Highlighting how monitoring of Assisted Travel is being strengthened and seeking views on how this may be improved further. Making Urgent Care work better in Sheffield – NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group Closes Wednesday 31 January 2018 NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) wants to make changes that make it simpler for people to get the care they need and guarantee everyone who needs it an urgent appointment within 24 hours. There are no changes to emergency
SWITCH TO SAVE MONEY IN 2018 According to Money Saving expert Martin Lewis, whether it’s energy, credit card, mortgage or broadband, switching provider can be one of the best ways to save money. So take a few minutes going through your household finances to see if you can save... • STOP paying interest on credit & store card debt - get up to 38mths at 0%. If you have an existing card debt, you’re likely paying whopping interest on it. Yet shift it to a 0% balance transfer card and you could save £100s, and pay it off quicker. • SAVE £300 or more in a year by switching energy suppliers. 29% of consumers said they haven’t switched. Switching is really simple. Our Cheap Energy Club shows how much you can save by comparing all the deals on the market (and also pays £25 dual-fuel cashback if we can switch you). • GET free £100 cash or £125 in vouchers to switch bank accounts. 70% haven’t switched. If you’re sick of your bank’s service, or even if you just want a bit of free cash, switching bank only takes seven working days. • TAKE advantage of hot deals to switch broadband, saving £100s. 66% haven’t switched. Many languish on astronomical prices but hot short-lived promos are the key to big savings when it comes to broadband and line rental. As the best deals for you depend on where you live, use our Broadband Unbundled tool to compare broadband, phone and TV deals in your area from 13 providers. • STOP paying more than £10 per month for your mobile. 75% haven’t switched. Mobiles can be expensive. Yet the cost of the Sim inside that gives you calls and data has dived. Last year you’d pay £15
per month for 6GB of data - now it’s £9 per month for 5GB. So unless you’re a really heavy user, or are still paying for your handset, this is the benchmark price to pay. • SAVE £1,000s switching mortgage providers. 77% haven’t switched. You don’t need to switch if you’re on a longterm intro deal, yet about a quarter of mortgage holders are overpaying on their lender’s Standard Variable Rate (SVR) the rate you usually move to when a fix or tracker ends. • NEVER auto-renew car and home insurance. 41% haven’t switched. Insurers love loyalty, because rather than reward you, it’s an opportunity to massively hike premiums at renewal.

or planned care in this consultation; this consultation is about providing urgent care in different ways so that they can improve access to urgent care services for people across the entire city. They are keen to hear your views, experiences and ideas about how we can improve urgent care services in Sheffield. What do think of the Transport System in Sheffield? Closes Tuesday 6 February 2018 Sheffield City Council wants to know what you think about the Sheffield Transport Vision, the future needs of the city and about your travel needs. Like the Sheffield Transport Vision, the survey doesn’t focus on what could change in particular areas or on particular routes. But the views and insights they receive will help them to develop the Sheffield Transport Strategy, where they will propose these specific changes. Once they’ve completed this strategy, there will be an opportunity to comment on it later in the year. Ward Priorities – Sheffield City Council We would like to know what people living in Sheffield feel should be the priorities for their ward councillors. Each ward in the city has 3 councillors who work to improve things for local people and represent them when decisions are made in the Town Hall. If your councillors are better informed about the things that are important to you then they can focus their attention on specific issues in your neighbourhood. The information you provide in this short questionnaire will help them identify the service providers, community organisations and local residents they need to work with. #SpeakUp Grants – Healthwatch Sheffield Closes Wednesday 31 January 2018 Healthwatch Sheffield has launched #SpeakUp grants aimed at local groups. They want to enable groups to run projects that help local people share their experiences of health and social care services in Sheffield. Not for profit, third sector, voluntary or community groups can apply for up to £500 in order to run engagement activities that encourage members of the public to have conversations about their experiences of health and social care. For more information, visit www. healthwatchsheffield.co.uk/news/speakupgrants-press-release or contact Mark Smith on m.smith@healthwatchsheffield. co.uk or 0114 2536687.

MERCURY M T RS RECORD NUMBER OF DRIVERS OPT FOR AWARENESS COURSES
Almost one and a half million drivers took a training course after committing an offence on the roads last year. Record figures compiled by the National Driver Offender Retraining Scheme (NDORS) show drivers are increasingly turning to the courses, which allow them to avoid begin handed penalty points on their license. The figures also underlined some regional disparities – with drivers in certain areas having to fork out far more than others to sit the sessions.

Speed awareness was by far the most popular course, with around 1.2 million attendees over the course of 2017. With a total of nine retraining schemes on offer, overall attendee numbers were up by 2% year-on-year. The courses are offered at the discretion of police forces, who directly receive £45 from each driver who commits an offence – recently up from £35. The fee is regarded as a recovery measure and is used to fund police efforts to catch speeding drivers. Constabularies across the UK now receive around £54 million from offenders each year. But as the courses are provided by private companies, the cost to speeding drivers varies across the UK. In Northamptonshire a speed awareness course costs £75, while the same course costs 32% more, or £99, in Essex. The new data also revealed attendee numbers varies significantly between constabularies. Steve Gooding, director of motoring research charity the RAC Foundation, said of the confusing figures: “What might perplex drivers is how the number of offenders sent on speed awareness courses differs hugely by constabulary.

AWARD WINNING FROM THE PHOENIX THE TEMPERANCE MARMOZETS RETURN CLUB TO THE CITY HALL MOVEMENT ON TOUR While you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, it’s often possible to glean a lot about an album from its title. Take the 2014 debut album from the Marmozets – Becca MacIntyre, Sam MacIntyre, Josh MacIntyre, Jack Bottomley and Will Bottomley – a band that’s more than a gang: they’re quite literally family. “The Weird And Wonderful Marmozets” perfectly encapsulated the unpredictable yet undeniable music the Bingley band had been creating since their inception. “The Weird And Wonderful Marmozets” arrived via Roadrunner in 2014 and was greeted with unprecedented acclaim from a range of international publications. “As fine an articulation of the thrills, spills and general confusion of being young and different in the U.K. as you’re likely to hear,” exclaimed Kerrang! before
honoring “The Weird And Wonderful Marmozets” as the year’s “Best Album” at the 2015 Kerrang! Awards. Q applauded the album as, “a very impressive, ambitious debut,” while Noisey highlighted vocalist Becca MacIntyre as someone who “…could be instrumental in a big change for British” ; 2017 marked the return of the Marmozets with their new single, ‘Play,’ which earned the unprecedented accolade of being declared both Radio 1’s Daniel P. Carter’s ‘Rockest Record’ and Annie Mac’s ‘Hottest Record’. NME highlighted ‘Play’ as one of their best new tracks and added, “The Brit alt-rockers return and they’re sounding absolutely massive.” Marmozets plus Queen Zee The Leadmill Sunday 11th Feb Tickets £13.00 available from www.theleadmill.co.uk

Following a whirlwind few years in which they released two Top 20 albums, toured around the world and shared the stage with rock megastars The Rolling Stones to name but one, The Temperance Movement are finally back on the music scene with a brand new album “A Deeper Cut”, set for release on February 16th 2018. Dave had been working in the NHS for 19 years as a Biomedical Scientist when in 1987 someone uttered the immortal words, “You’re really funny, you should be a comedian” and for some reason, he took them seriously!! Only a few short months later he was crowned the winner of the national talent show “Stairway to the Stars”. Larry Grayson, one of the judges, told him that it was a close run thing on the night but what clinched the award for Dave was his routine about a juggler on a motorbike. Fast forward 13 years (Is that possible?) to Friday 13th October 2000 , the day Dave switched off his microscope for good and found himself, the following Monday, sitting on rain swept local car park dressed as a giant berry! So now in 2017 he celebrates the 30th anniversary of his comedy career. In this show he will look back on his remarkable life and his incredible journey from working class lad to Chief Biomedical Scientist to much loved comedy performer and writer via Phoenix Nights, Eight out of Ten Cats, Bullseye, Dead Man Weds, Magnolia, The Royal Variety Show, Parkinson and many more. He often reflects that maybe none of this

THERE’S SOME MONKEY BUSINESS UP WALKLEY AS THE FIRWOOD COTTAGE GETS AN EXCITING SPEAKEASY STYLE REFURB VINYL RECORDS The Firwood Cottage on Whitehouse Lane is under new ownership and currently being fully refurbished, renovated and re-branded as ‘The Blind Monkey’. The building itself dates back to the late 1800’s to which according to local folklore dated back to being a grocery store where you could sit and drink a bottle of ale you had just bought. We are taking the pub back to the hay day of the early 1900’s, so our canvas for the project was being able to work with reclaimed materials alongside art décor fittings. The whole pub shall have a
Edwardian style to it. These roots also influenced our new name for the pub which also harks back to prohibition days back in the 1900’s, where illicit speakeasies were often called Blind Tiger and Blind Pig. We sided with the monkey as we felt it had a connection with our Brass Monkey Northern city and of course its name association with certain locally born Artics. Our ethos is everything associated with the city. We shall be sourcing as much as we can locally. Patrons can expect an impressive range of Whiskies, Rums, Gins as well as regional cask ales
& craft beers. We shall also be serving a street inspired food menu which shall all be carefully selected to complement our range of drinks. Sheffield people love the outdoors with the peaks on the doorstep and so frequent a god beer garden. We know this due to the success of our other venue, The Cadeby Pub & Restaurant in Doncaster which boasts the best dining terrace and beer garden locally. Therefore, we have already completely transformed the garden at the Monkey to which people shall be able to enjoy a few drinks and maybe some lunch in an urban chic garden area.
It is definitely a destination venue but one that we feel people shall like to visit and enjoy purely because we shall be offering something slightly different to the norm. We are extremely excited about this project and very much looking forward to serving the great people of this amazing city. This city is music, art, sport, great food and wonderful people and we shall be embracing and celebrating all that is Sheffield. COUNTY SENIOR FOOTBALL with Michael Clarke
The New Year thus far has seen weather interrupted return to action for the County Senior League, but it was a little kinder this week, with all 15 games getting the green light. Premier Division Premier Division leaders Grimethorpe Sports suffered their second consecutive league loss, as they fell to a 5-4 away loss to Jubilee Sports. Alfie Smith inspired Jubilee, scoring three times to help his side into third place, just four points off the pace. Frecheville stretched their unbeaten league run to eight games, with a 6-0 home win over Millmoor Juniors. Frecheville are up to sixth with the win. Swinton Athletic made it five wins in a row in all competitions, with a 4-2 win over Swinton Athletic at Mexborough Athletic Ground. Swinton sit in a modest ninth position, but are only eight points off the lead with three games spare. Goals from Matt Harrison and Alex Torr gave Oughtibridge WMFC a 2-1 home win over Houghton Main. North Gawber Colliery climbed up to seventh place, with a 4-2 win against Denaby Main at the UPVC Trade Centre Ground. Division One High Green Villa fell to their second loss of the New Year, as they lost 2-1 to Hepworth United at St George’s Park, Thorncliffe. High Green still sit in second place despite having a minus one goal difference. Two goals from Callum Tottman gave Sheffield Medics a 2-0 win over Silkstone United at Silkstone Recreation Ground. It is the first league win since the 28th October for the Medics, who have more recently had
more joy in their cup exploits. Both Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves and Brinsworth Whitehill registered their first draws of the season, as they held each other 2-2 at the Yorkshire NU Build Stadium. Caribbean Sports are up to fifth place, after they beat Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 at the Caribbean Sports Ground. Division Two It was a big day in Division Two, with the top two Boynton Sports and Burngreave FC meeting at Concord Park. The game lived up to the hype, with Burngreave taking all three points with a 5-3 win. Yasin Omar, Abdulahi Ibrahim Ahmed, Jon Iufudu (2) and Kassim Muhsin were all on target for Burngreave who take a three point lead atop the table. A Giorgio Williams hat-trick inspired Wombwell Main Development to a 4-1 away win over North Gawber Colliery Reserves. The win lifts Wombwell into third position. Fifth placed Working Wonders registered their biggest win of the season so far, as they beat Thurcroft Miners Institute 5-0 at the Thurcroft Hub. Goals from Dean Conway, Shaun Edwards, James Green (2) and Ryan Smyth gave Manor Hotel a 5-3 win over AFC Dronfield Reserves at Muglet Lane. Sheffield Bankers Reserves made it three consecutive wins in all competitions, with a 2-1 home win over fellow mid-table outfit New Bohemians. Joshua Allison scored all three goals for Caribbean Sports Reserves, in their 3-2 home win over Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Development.
My tough streak continues… I’m on a new water this year, one I’ve fished only once previously, over 30 years ago, so I’m calling it ‘new’. It’s not a big water at around four and half acres, but Hales Hall seems to have a reputation as a tricky, spring fed lake, which can be moody too… just what I needed! I visited first after a sheet of ice had covered the water for the preceding couple of days, in search of pike. I had almost no information about the water, so was going in ‘blind’, but having walked the lake and disturbed a predator in deeper water, I headed for the dam, and set up in a comfortable peg. A legered lamprey, and a floatfished smelt were quickly despatched out into the lake as I set about searching the water in front of me ‘fan style’ to try and cover it all throughout the session. After changing baits, and recasting until the whole area had been searched, my session resolved nothing. I hadn’t had so much as a bleep, or wobble of any of my indicators, I’d not seen a fish, and therefore had gained very little from my visit; not the ideal start, surely my next session would be better? A few days later, and I returned, this time with the intention of fishing a boilie and pellet attack, to try and tempt either a carp, or one of the hefty bream. On my first rod, a small Spotted Fin Pink Catalyst pop up was attached to a Ronnie rig, a tiny bag of red halibut pellets attached, and it was flung out towards a floating island. The second rig was nothing more complicated than a Method feeder, clad in Spotted Fin groundbait, and primed with an 8mm wafter, which was also cast in front of me. Within a minute, I heard “Molly!” shouted, and turned to see a large collie barrelling towards me, skidding to a halt at my groundbait bowl, which it shoved its head into hungrily, before wolfing down a few mouthfuls, and then kicking the bowl in to the lake! Not content with robbing me of my feed, it then bounced around the swim, kicked over my rods and pod, before leaping into the water in front of me to splash about and then paddle out into my peg! Needless to say, the venue has a ‘dogs on leads’ rule, so I expressed my displeasure to the owner (putting it mildly) before the itinerant hound was tethered and removed… not a great start! An hour in, and a screaming take indicated interest, and as I picked up the rod, a swift, single thump at the other end told me that the highly visible pink pop up had been the first to go. Unfortunately, this particular fish had feathers…and a beak. I still find it difficult to believe just how far a tufted duck can travel underwater, and I hadn’t seen this one coming, before it picked up the bait to trigger my receiver. It popped out of the water like a surfacing sub, dropping the bait, but leaving the rig in a mess… I hate tufties! After three hours of silence, much of which I’d spent watching the angler on the far bank as he fished for bream, my other alarm sounded. Glancing back at the area in which my bait lay, I saw a coot surface, before skittering across the water as my line followed it! I couldn’t believe this! The bait snatcher kited to my right before enmeshing my line in a dead reedbed, where it became fast. The offender had managed to drop the bait, and scarpered back out in to the lake where it sat spitting at me. I had no option other than to go and get the line, to avoid leaving yards of mono, but oh my, that water looked cold! Laying the rod down with the bail arm open, I grabbed my net pole, took a very sharp intake of breath, and plunged through the reeds… Thankfully, the reed bed wasn’t too deep, but the water was,

and it filled my boots with freezing, murky slime as I reached the feeder where I was able to release it. Once again, the avian culprit escaped unharmed, but by now, I’d had enough. My baits were obviously visible to the waterfowl, and I wasn’t going to risk another event, so I packed up…another blank, and my feet were aching with cold… Today, I’ve been back again. This time armed with a quivertip rod, maggots, and groundbait, as I tried another tactic to elicit some interest. This time, a feeder full of krill groundbait was clipped up at forty odd yards, and a series of quick casts got a bit of bait down ready for the forthcoming session. I attached a hooklink, added a couple of gentiles, cocked my arm back, and promptly clipped the branches of an overhead tree, ripping the bait off the hook, and tumbling the feeder into the water about five yards in front of me… Ahhh! I readjusted, and eventually got a bait in the water, tightened a small curve in the ‘tip, and sat back to wait… and wait… and wait…this place seems able to bring out the worst in me… For four hours, that ‘tip didn’t even tremble once. I recast religiously every twenty minutes, and twitched the bait back every ten, to keep bait going in hoping that bream would move into the swim, but it didn’t appear to have any effect at all. A gentleman stopped to chat, and as we conversed, out of the corner of my eye, I saw the ‘tip flinch; just an inch, but it definitely moved! I waited for the bite to develop, but that inch was it… it didn’t move again. I reloaded the feeder, and recast, being careful to avoid the tree, and sat back despondently. Within five minutes, another tiny tremble was noted, but once again, no bite. I changed my hook link, changed the hook, changed the bait, changed the feeder, but still couldn’t get a proper bite. In my defence, no—one else had had a bite either, so you can imagine my delight when the ‘tip moved around slightly, and stayed there! It was enough to tempt me to strike, and as I swept the rod aloft, I felt solid resistance, and this was definitely a fish! My prize seemed to surrender immediately, and was easily recovered towards me. A flash of silver confused me, as did the powerful run immediately after my first glimpse; this wasn’t the bream I’d hoped for, but instead a toothy pike. I have no idea how a pike picks up two maggots on a size 18 hook to 3lb line, I imagine it must look like a crocodile trying to pick up a single chicken nugget off a shiny table using only its teeth, but I did wonder if that was what the initial movements of the ‘tip had been. As the pike approached the net, I could see the hook barely nicked into the outside of the jaw, and as it crossed the threshold, it bit through the line, firing the feeder over my shoulder, just missing my head! No matter; luckily it was enveloped in the net, and a pristine fish of around 5lb gave me my first piscine result from the venue. So, three visits, no proper bites, two birds, and only a single, fluked fish. It’s not much of a return so far, but I have much to learn, and fortunately, plenty of time to do it. I’d far rather try and crack a tough nut like this one, than go and fish a commercial venue, packed with fish, that require much less effort to catch, so I’ll keep trying… after all, that’s why we keep going back isn’t it? Wish me luck...

MILLERS TO HONOUR DECEASED Follow Your Local Team Every Week In The Mercury SUPPORTERS AHEAD OF PORTSMOUTH MILLERS SUPPORT PIVOTAL GAME
IN HOME DOUBLE HEADER Rotherham United manager Paul Warne says a healthy crowd at this Saturday’s home clash with Portsmouth could make all the difference as the Millers look to extend their recent unbeaten run. The Millers are set to host Pompey for the first time at AESSEAL New York Stadium, in a game that will also see former manager Kenny Jackett make his first return to South Yorkshire. With the South Coast club currently just one place and one point above the Millers in the table, Warne insists it is a vital game as both sides look to maintain their impressive starts to the New Year. “We have had an excellent run over Christmas and the New Year, but we were obviously keen to maintain the feel-good factor around the club ahead of two very tough home games,” Warne told www.themillers.co.uk. “As well as we have done in the last six weeks, Portsmouth boast an equally impressive record and I know Kenny will be keen to get a result on his return. “We have put ourselves in a handy position after a good point at Oldham, and with another break in the calendar coming up, it’s important

that we keep the momentum going and keep putting points on the board to put the sides above us under pressure. “Portsmouth will be thinking exactly the same, setting this one up to be an exciting game and one in which both sides will be going for the win.” Portsmouth look set to be backed by a healthy travelling contingent with Warne calling upon the Millers rank and file to produce a famous AESSEAL New York Stadium atmosphere, as two of the division’s form team collide. “Pompey always travel in big numbers and this is the first time that they have played at our stadium, so we’re expecting a big following,” Warne added. “It promises to be a great atmosphere, and on the surface it has all the ingredients to become one of those famous New York atmospheres that we have enjoyed over the years. “I understand many people have spent a lot of money over the Christmas period, so I would like to thank you all for the incredible support over the last couple of months, and I’m looking forward to seeing you again this weekend.” Tickets for this fixture are on sale now.

Rotherham United are once again asking supporters to join in their annual tribute for supporters of the club that we have lost in the last year, by sending in names to be remembered at the game against Portsmouth on Saturday 20th January 2018. Fans wishing to have their loved ones’ names displayed on the big screen prior to the game with Pompey should send the name they would
WARNE HAPPY WITH POINT AT OLDHAM MILLERS boss Paul Warne was quick to praise his side’s battling qualities after they gained a hard-fought point at Oldham Athletic, thanks to Ryan Williams’ early strike. Warne’s men took control of the Roses clash when the Australian fired home on seven minutes following good work in the build-up by David Ball and Anthony Forde. However, Rotherham’s hopes of securing their fourth away on the spin were dented when Craig Davies levelled matters for the Lancastrians, soon after. Speaking to the assembled press corps afterwards, Warne insisted that it was a point gained over the Pennines rather than two points dropped, owing to the difficult playing and weather conditions at Boundary Park. “It wasn’t a game for the purists,” Warne remarked. “The pitch was soft and not conducive for either team to play a passing game. In every year that we have held this tribute, we have been overwhelmed with the response and we’d just like to make supporters aware that any email sent will have been received, although we can’t respond to them all. The names will also be printed in the official matchday programme and the deadline for all submitted names will be Monday 15th January 2018, 5pm. To ensure that we do not miss any emails, names MUST be sent in by email in the following format: To: media@rotherhamunited.net Subject: Rotherham Remembers 2018 out how we were going to play before hand and we were pretty much in control of the game but we gave away a needless free-kick and they worked it quite well and scored. “We went in at half-time and asked the lads to do everything a bit quicker. The lads are disappointed in the changing rooms because they think they have dropped two points, which is good from my point of view, as they are motivated to come and win but to pick up a point away from home and go seven without defeat is a good little run for us. It’s not the worst day I’ve had.” The Roses clash saw the Millers travelling contingent get their first view of new signing Michael Smith but Warne acknowledged it was difficult game for his forwards to make an impression – with both sides locked in a midfield battle, especially in the second-half. “We didn’t get the ball to Bally and Jerry as much as we’d like and it was a little flooded in midfield,” Warne added. “We did not have enough quality but it was a difficult game for us. The lads fought hard and we defended resolutely at times and I was pretty comfortable we were not going to concede again. “We’d have liked the three points, but it wasn’t to be today and we’ll take a point.”
FERGUSON CLARIFIES REMARKS ON OFFICIALS Darren Ferguson has clarified his postmatch comments after Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Plymouth Argyle. The Rovers boss was critical of the officials after the game, feeling key decisions went against his side. He said: “When asked after the game what I personally could do to raise standards, I said: ‘What can I do? Shoot them?’ Although clear to everyone in the room that my comment was a tongue-in-cheek response, it is worth clarifying my comments were borne out of
frustration and I absolutely do not advocate violence against officials. “I am sorry for that comment and regret the wording, but as was clear from my post-match comments I felt the referee got some decisions wrong at key moments in the game. “Referees have a tough job and I have a lot of respect for the challenges they face, but I would like to see more done to raise standards across the board and give them the best chance of getting decisions right.”

WILDER’S FINAL DERBY THOUGHTS Chris Wilder felt his players got caught up in the occasion following the dismissal of Wednesday skipper Glenn Loovens on Friday evening. Chris Wilder felt his players got caught up in the occasion following the dismissal of Wednesday skipper Glenn Loovens on Friday evening. Loovens saw red in the 64th minute, following two cynical
lunges on Clayton Donaldson, but the Owls held firm to take a share of the spoils from the Lane. And speaking afterwards, Wilder praised the opposition and was left frustrated at United’s inability to capitalise on a numerical advantage. The manager said: “They sat deep all game, I’m not going to complain about that, it was down to us to break them down, we second guessed
it and I’d have done exactly the same. “They had Joao with pace to get in behind and a target, they flooded the midfield and they hoped to get something on the counter attack. “They were a dangerous side and one who worked extremely hard, full credit to them. “We didn’t need to get caught up in the atmosphere after the sending off, we needed to step back
from the excitement and emotion.” Wilder concluded: “We needed our cool and calculated players to step up, we ended up shooting off balance, putting cross high over the bar, we just couldn’t produce that bit of quality. “We didn’t deserve to win the game really and in the end we could have easily lost it, had not been for Simon. “It was a save he had to get up and make,
if he hadn’t it was a goal. Fair play to him, their goalkeeper makes a fantastic save from Clayton too. “But we had 25 minutes to win the game against some
tired bodies and we should have kept moving the ball until an overload or opportunity arose, instead of trying to score each time we went forward.”

BLADES DOUBLE SWOOP Chris Wilder has bolstered his squad further, with the permanent addition of another midfielder and the loan capture of a Premier League striker. Welsh international Lee Evans joins the Blades on a threeand-a-half-year deal from Championship leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers, with United paying an undisclosed fee for his services. Meanwhile, Manchester United’s James Wilson will spend the remainder of the season at the Lane, after all parties agreed a loan deal. The deals come on the back of Ryan Leonard signing for the Blades on Tuesday. Upon seeing Evans sign on the dotted line, the Blades boss remarked: “Lee is a great age with his best years ahead of
him. We’ve watched him and monitored his progress for a while and we’re delighted to get him permanently. “He is a young international, he fits in with what we’re about and is an excellent player who we hope will add further depth and competition to our midfield.” The Newport-born midfielder started as a youngster at Bristol Rovers, before making his debut for his hometown club as a 17-year-old in March 2012. In January 2013, Evans joined Wolves and has made over 50 appearances for the Molineux club, in addition to 35 whilst on-loan at Bradford City during the 2015/16 campaign. The 23-yearold has impressed this term at Wigan Athletic,
helping the Latics to the summit of League One, scoring three times in 24 appearances in all competitions. Evans, who has won numerous Welsh caps at U21 level, made his senior debut alongside David Brooks against Panama in November. And Wilder is equally as excited to have landed Wilson, adding: “James has a fantastic pedigree, having come through the ranks at Manchester United and, importantly, has some good Championship experience. “He says he is raring to go and is the fittest he has ever been, so couple that with his undoubted ability and desire to impress, then I’m sure he will improve the group.” Wilson was first scouted by Manchester United at the age of seven and has

WILDER ADDS PROMOTION SPARK WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH After six years, two months and twenty-eight days of waiting, Bramall Lane was host to a Steel City Derby. The anticipation beforehand across the city was colossal and United headed into the game as favourites. A truly awful game followed, to put it kindly. The Blades failed to break down a stubborn Wednesday defence and lacked any real quality in the final third. The performance was not without effort, which is what has become to be expected from every outing. Chris Wilder has moved early in the transfer
market to inject a much-needed spark back into United’s promotion bid. Ryan Leonard was the first to arrive following months of interest and failed bids. It was a shame to not see the 25-year-old introduced last Friday from the bench. The midfielder built a reputation for scoring shots from distance during his time at Southend. He won the Southend Goal of the Season award in both of the last two campaigns. John Lundstram had a couple of efforts from outside the box late on, Leonard might be better suited to finding the top corner
when the going gets tough. After another mammoth pursuit, Wilder was able to attain the services of Ricky Holmes from Charlton. He too adds another element to the United midfield. Any supporter who was at the Charlton game last season at the Lane, knows the ability he has when it comes to free kicks in dangerous areas. Holmes is another option if the team is struggling to break down teams who sit back. Good early business is not something Blades fans have been used too, the need to endlessly refresh Twitter on deadline day is reduced.

Glenn Loovens saw red after a second yellow card in the 65th minute, but Wednesday were resolute and worked hard to earn a well-deserved point in the 128th Steel City derby. of the moments of the game five minutes after the restart. Clayton Donaldson’s header looked to have the beating of the Owls academy product but Wildsmith adjusted to make a spectacular save to tip the ball over the bar. “I didn’t think I was going to save it, I genuinely thought it was going in,” he told swfc. co.uk. “It’s a proud moment for me, I’ve got a split family in terms of football. I’ve got uncles in the Kop and my mum and dad in the away end so it’s a special day. “It’s always nice in a Sheffield derby, I’ve grown up with it and it’s a fixture I know very well. “But all credit to the team, we stuck together and we’re happy to take the point and move on.”
Joe Wildsmith has lavished praise on the team following a battling performance at Bramall Lane on Friday evening. Wednesday posted a point from the Sheffield derby in difficult conditions, playing the final 25 minutes with ten men. Captain Glenn Loovens was dismissed on 65 minutes, picking up his second yellow card, but the Owls stood firm in the Steel City clash and Wildsmith said: “I just think it was a tough match but we fully deserved to come away with a point. “Especially how we went down to ten men but with the new manager coming in, he’s changed the formation and we’ve had four days to work on it. “We’ve worked hard to get it right and I think it shows what the lads are capable of after such a short time. “We had a plan, we were solid and we have a clean sheet to show for it.” Wildsmith produced one

He added: “From the first minute you could feel the passion in the stadium. “In football, games like these are more special because they make you feel something. “I enjoyed it, but the important thing for us now is the next games and we want to start looking at getting more points to take us higher in the table.”
