PURPLE FLAG STILL FLYING PROUDLY IN SHEFFIELD Sheffield remains one of the safest places to enjoy a night out for people of all ages – after being awarded a purple flag for the seventh successive year. Purple Flag is a town and city centre award – similar to the Blue Flag award for beaches – which aims to raise the standard and broaden the appeal of town and city centres between 5pm and 5am. The flag, which will remain pride of place in the city’s Peace Gardens for another year, shows that the city remains one of the country’s safest. Sheffield City Council is continuing to work with partners such as

South Yorkshire Police and Sheffield BID after a number of isolated incidents over Christmas, and said the award should re-assure people that the city remains a safe place to live, work and party in. Areas awarded the Purple Flag are recognised for providing a vibrant and diverse mix of dining, entertainment and culture while promoting the safety and wellbeing of visitors and local residents. Councillor Mary Lea, cabinet member for culture, sport and leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “It’s great to see Sheffield once again receiving this award, and our night-time

entertainment offer being recognised on a national level. “With our varied selection of bars and restaurants, as well as a thriving theatre district and huge array of cultural attractions, we in Sheffield really are leading the way when it comes to providing an eclectic mix of places to eat, drink, relax and have fun. “Sheffield is now a much more vibrant place after 5pm thanks to Sheffield BID’s Alive After Five campaign. We were all shocked by the incidents over Christmas and are working closely with partners to ensure that we can hoist the Purple Flag for

many years to come.” The Purple Flag programme is managed by the Association of Town and City Management (ATCM) which works alongside a partnership of key stakeholder groups backed by Government, police and businesses, as well as the UK sponsors Diageo Great Britain. Diane Jarvis, Sheffield BID manager, said: “Making Sheffield city centre a safer place for people to eat, drink, shop, and enjoy themselves in the evening is a one of Sheffield BID’s core objectives, and it is fantastic that the city continues to be recognised by Purple Flag.

Superintendent Paul McCurry from South Yorkshire Police added: “We work closely with Sheffield BID, Sheffield Council and our licensed premises across Sheffield to keep the city safe and to ensure that all those who visit Sheffield can enjoy its diverse nightlife and culture without issue. “In recent weeks, we have seen a number of concerning incidents in the city centre at our licensed premises but it is testament to the excellent partnership working between police, Sheffield BID and licensed premises that we were able to address these issues quickly, enforcing closure notices while discussions take place to improve public safety measures.”

CITY OF STEEL WELCOMES MEN OF IRON…… Sheffield, brace for impact! The biggest, strongest men in the country are storming FlyDSA Arena on Saturay 27th January for the ultimate showdown of strength. The contest is part of the Official World’s Strongest Man qualifying tour and after a sell-out show last year—with qualifying shows pulling in audiences of 10,000+—Britain’s Strongest Man is coming to the FlyDSA Arena to take on a new, even BIGGER, even BETTER venue for 2018. With MORE spectators, an EPIC atmosphere, GIGANTIC men and COLOSSOL challenges, the spectacle of British strongman is finally setting its stage in front of the stadium audience it deserves. GET YOUR GAME FACE ON! The show will be filmed for Channel 5 and is set to be the battle to end all battles. All the biggest stars of British Strongman will be there to hoist stones, throw kegs, carry cars and lift HEAVY metal to prove they have the herculean determination to overcome 5 gruelling tests of strength and be crowned Britain’s Strongest Man. No doubt the leading man in this star studded strength line up is Eddie ‘the Beast’ Hall - who returned from Botswana in with The crown of World’s Strongest Man. Eddie, the 30-stone Stoke-on-Trent athlete - has stated he is retiring from WSM but has just a few goals left to achieve. If he wins this contest he will claim a fifth win-in-row. The record is 4

01422 886608 or 07944 789550

and he already owns it after beating Geoff Capes’ of Spalding who did 3 wins in the 1970s and 1980’s. But he isn’t the only BSM Winner returning, as Dartford’s super sized strongman Terry Holland’s who also claims more World’s Strongest Man finals in a row than any other athlete won the contest back in 2007, but has often been injured in the lead up to BSM since. The other danger men come in brothers from Scotland - Luke and Tom Stoltman are a pair of humongous highlanders. Young Tom standing at 6 foot 8. As each year passed the Scots get closer to becoming truly World class. With local interest in Paul Smith - a 23 year old Sheffield resident who has already won the England’s Strongest Man title there is more than a chance the silverware will stay in the steel city! This is a new age for the sport of strongman, so come, take your place in the strongman history books and witness this monumental event as it’s never been seen before. Line-up of athletes subject to change..... Terry Hollands, Eddie Hall, Aaron Page, Mark Felix, Adam Bishop, Graham Hicks, Ken Nowicki, Mark Steele, Luke Stoltman, Tom Stoltman, Paul Smith, Ben Brunning. Tickets are on sale now priced £28, £50.40 & £72.80 (including booking fee) when purchased online at www.flydsaarena.co.uk & via the ticket hotline on 0114 256 5656 or £26.25, £47.25 & £68.25 (including booking fee) when purchased in person from the venue box office. Got a new aftershave called bread crumbs. The birds love it! My wife broke up with me recently because I’m a compulsive gambler. All I can think about is how to win her back. My wife has left me. She said I was too passive, and didn’t stand up for myself enough. I can’t really argue with that. The guy who invented predictive text passed away yesterday. His funfair will be next monkey. My friend thinks he is smart. He told me an onion is the only food that can make you cry... So I threw a coconut at his face. I hate it when you offer someone a sincere compliment about their moustache, and suddenly... she’s not your friend anymore. Only a real genius could say these four words fast without getting tongue tied: eye, yam, stew, peed. Just read a book on marriage that says treat your wife like you treated her on the first date. So after dinner tonight... I’m dropping her off at her parents house. I’m in hospital! Dont Panic! I ate what I thought was an onion, but it was a daffodill bulb! Doctors reckon I’ll be out in the Spring. A dentist and a manicurist married. They fought tooth and nail. To everyone that received a book from me for Christmas, they’re due back at the library on Friday! Shop assistant: How about this one? Psychic: That shirt is too small. Shop assistant: You didn’t even try it on? Psychic: I’m a medium.

December 2018 will see the band deliver what many UK & Eire fans have been waiting for – the Hysteria album performed in full plus other Def Leppard hits across eleven arena dates in December 2018. Rick “Sav” Savage says, “After many requests from fans in the U.K, I’m delighted that we can bring the whole “Hysteria” album to arenas across Britain and Ireland later this year. From ‘Women’ to ‘Love and Affection’ plus many other faves thrown in for good measure. Oh, and our old pals Cheap Trick will be there also to help with the celebrations!! We can’t wait’. These will be the first Def Leppard UK & Eire tour dates since the sold-out Arena run in late 2015. The band will return to Sheffield to play their ninth show at the FlyDSA Arena which is sure to be a monumental homecoming show. 2018 also marks the 35th anniversary of “Hysteria’s” predecessor “Pyromania”. The seminal 1987 Hysteria album is rightly seen as a landmark recording in the history of rock music. It was the album that saw Def Leppard conquer the world with global hits such as Animal, Pour Some Sugar On Me, Hysteria, Armageddon It, Love Bites, Woman and Rocket. The band will deliver Hysteria in full alongside other songs from their incredible catalogue. The UK & Eire tour will follow a massive USA coheadlining tour with Journey. Comprised of stadiums and arena venues around the U.S., the 60-city run is set to kick off in Hartford, CT on May 21st and will wrap in Los Angeles, CA on October 6th. The band will be supported by Cheap Trick across all dates. The legendary British rock icons Def Leppard will also debut their full recording catalogue worldwide via https://DefLeppard.lnk.to/Digital. One of the last multi-platinum selling acts to be made available on streaming and download platforms, music fans from all corners of the globe can now enjoy tracks and albums from Def Leppard who have sold more than 100 million albums worldwide to become one of

Many of you will already have heard of and use the Trans Pennine Trail, or TPT as it is more commonly known. If you’ve visited the TPT’s website you’ll know there is already a host of information for walkers, cyclists and horse riders. Recent feedback from members of the public highlighted that there is a need to address further accessibility information for users with specific needs such as families with pushchairs, wheelchair and scooter users, people with other mobility issues, tandem / trike / recumbent users. This is something that they’ve worked on recently and the new section of the website will be launched on Monday, 29th January 2018. Supporters of the TPT kick-started the process by taking photographs

and measurements of access controls along the Trail. This information is beneficial to many users of the Trail and has now been plotted on the electronic maps on the TPT’s website. The next stage involved discussions with users, supporters and partners to find out what other information would be useful. Gillian Ivey, Chair of the Trans Pennine Trail partnership says, “This has been an important second phase of the project which builds on the initial works by our great supporters. Our new ‘accessibility’ section of the website provides details on Changing Places along the Trail, accessible venues, links to other organisations as well as a detailed map showing the access control information. Once the new section has been launched we urge

people to get in touch if they have any suggestions on how we can continue to improve or add further information.” The TPT Office has worked closely with Accessible Derbyshire and Access for All UK for guidance on this project. A spokesperson from Accessible Derbyshire says, “It’s great to see that a partnership of Local Authorities like the TPT has really taken the subject of accessibility on board and the website is a great way to provide users with information but still giving them the confidence to use their own judgement.” The new section of the TPT’s website from Monday 29th January 2018, visit www.transpenninetrail.org.uk

FLYING HIGH – MEADOWHALL ANNOUNCES NEW CHARITY PARTNER FOR 2018/19

The North’s largest entertainment weekly, telephone our sales team to get your advert on these pages 0114 276 3633 opt.1

Meadowhall is hoping to reach new heights in 2018/19 with Yorkshire Air Ambulance as its latest Charity of the Year. The life-saving charity maintains and operates two helicopters with full medical crews covering the whole of Yorkshire. It replaces Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice which raised a staggering £128,000 during its two-year partnership with the Centre. To mark the start of the new fund-raising relationship, one of YAA’s Air Ambulances will be flying into Meadowhall on Wednesday January 24th. The helicopter* is due to land on the Upper Red car

park at 10am and will be greeted by Meadowhall staff and retailers, as well as local schoolchildren from the nearby Tinsley Meadows Primary School. YAA Chairman Peter Sunderland will also be attending. Meadowhall Centre Director Darren Pearce said: “It is always a very difficult decision choosing a new Charity of the Year, but the Yorkshire Air Ambulance do a fantastic job of saving lives across the region and need to raise £12,000 every single day to maintain and keep their helicopters in the air.” Last year 1543 people were assisted across the county - an area covering 11,900km and a population of over 5.2million. Since the first YAA helicopter was launched in October 2000, 7,467 patients have been rescued thanks to their highly skilled crews and their two Airbus H145 helicopters which operate seven days per week, 365 days per year. Darren added: “It has been a fantastic two years working with Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice and there have been some great initiatives to look back on, such as The SuperCar experiences and the more recent Kate Rusby Charity Christmas CD . We are now looking forward to many new fund-raising initiatives with YAA who have some fantastic ideas and plans for the next two years.” Garry Wilkinson, Director of Fundraising from

Yorkshire Air Ambulance, said: “We are absolutely ecstatic to have been chosen at Meadowhall’s Charity partner for the next two years. We already have lots of plans a foot for exciting fundraising initiatives and are looking forward to working with and further engaging with the people of South Yorkshire and the visitors to Meadowhall. As an independent Charity, partnerships such as this with Meadowhall are vitally important to the YAA and we are very much looking forward to working with their team and maximising the opportunity given to us.”

A £20 million project delivering flood defences to better protect hundreds of businesses in Sheffield’s Lower Don Valley will be unveiled on Thursday (25 January). Sir James Bevan, the Chief Executive of the Environment Agency and Councillor Julie Dore, leader of Sheffield City Council, will be among the speakers at an event, attended by local business owners, to mark the completion of the work. The events of the 2007 and 2012 floods, which caused millions of pounds of damage to property, led to the development of the project. The area was one of the worst hit by the 2007 floods and for the last seven years Sheffield City Council has been leading on the Lower Don Valley flood defence project to develop affordable flood defences. The Lower Don Valley area is second only to the city centre for economic importance to Sheffield. The new flood alleviation scheme will benefit over 500 businesses and safeguard around 5, 000 jobs, key roads in and out of the city and homes along a five mile stretch of the River Don. It is the first scheme of its kind in the UK to have business owners contributing to the costs of the flood protection through the creation of a formal Business Improvement District. Local businesses are contributing a total of £1.4 million, with more than 90 per cent of the total capital cost of £20.7 million funded by the Environment Agency and Defra. Construction work has involved the installation of more than 60 new flood protection measures to the River Don, between the Wicker and the M1 at Meadowhall, and has significantly reduced the risk of flooding. Councillor Julie Dore, the leader of Sheffield City Council said: “ I am delighted to see we have fulfilled our promise to strengthen our defences against floods. “We have seen an innovative and pioneering approach to allow us to invest in these important flood defences and I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in the Business Improvement District, who have made this possible through working together. “We will continue to push for the funding we need

7

to improve flood protection throughout the city.” Councillor Bryan Lodge, Cabinet Member for Environment and Streetscene added: “As well as building flood defences such as new walls and flood gates, that will see us through any future problems, we have put in place a maintenance programme to ensure the river is kept clear of debris which can build up and worsen flooding, as happened in the past. “We will continue our engagement with the local business community to make them aware of their responsibilities for the river and what measures they need to take to protect themselves from flooding.” “We will also be working with local schools and anyone else who wants to volunteer to enhance the environment, both in the river, and along the footpaths so that people can enjoy the River Don.” The voluntary efforts and educational work will be led by a local social enterprise the River Stewardship Company. A proportion of the money raised by the BID will go towards the costs of maintaining the river. The LDV scheme has been shortlisted for an award as the best project over £5 million in the Institute of Civil Engineers Yorkshire and Humber Awards 2018.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - LADIES - DON’T BE HOW TO EAT AWAY THE WINTER BLUES HELP WITH RESEARCH EMBARRASSED Ignite Imaginations has teamed up with psychologists at the University of Sheffield to carry out some exciting and important research on the arts and well-being. The project has been funded by an Arts Council England scheme and this is the only team representing the north of the country. Many of us recognise the value of the arts for well-being and the aim is to provide scientific evidence for the positive impact that the arts can have on our lives. Willing volunteers are required to help achieve this by taking part in research studies. Two studies are running over the next few months and the research team particularly interested in recruiting people from Darnall, Firth Park and Manor but can include anybody interested. Study 1 involves tracking arts experiences in an online diary and is open to anyone aged 18+ who has a smartphone with internet access. Study 2 is for people aged 50+ and involves listening to an audiobook and answering some questionnaires. Both studies require meeting with the research team at a time/place convenient to volunteers. People who take part in either study will be given a £10 Love2Shop voucher as a thank you and will be contributing to important scientific research. Please get in touch with Giulia (pronounced ‘Julia’) on email g.poerio@ sheffield.ac.uk or on 0114 222 6544 for more details or to express interest.

Young women are avoiding getting smear tests because they are embarrassed a survey suggests. The charity Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust surveyed 2,017 British women. A third said embarrassment caused them to delay getting a smear test, which can prevent 75% of cervical cancers. The charity said cervical cancer is the most common cancer in women under 35, yet almost two-thirds of those surveyed weren’t aware they are most at risk. A total of 220,000 British women are diagnosed with cervical abnormalities each year. The aim of the NHS Cervical Screening Programme is to reduce the number of women who develop cervical cancer and the number of women who die from the condition. Since the screening programme was introduced in the 1980s, the number of cervical cancer cases has decreased by about 7% each year. All women who are registered with a GP are invited for cervical screening: • aged 25 to 49 – every 3 years • aged 50 to 64 – every 5 years • over 65 – only women who haven’t been screened since age 50 or those who have recently had abnormal tests. Being screened regularly means any abnormal changes in the cells of the cervix can be identified at an early stage and, if necessary, treated to stop cancer developing.Of the five million women in the UK invited to cervical screening each year, one in four do not attend. This rises to one in three among women aged 25 to 29. A smear test could save your life. Please don’t put yours off.

Winter is a common time to feel the blues, due to the lack of sunshine and the amount of illnesses going around. Feeling a little down may cause you to turn to the sugary snacks like chocolate and sweets for a quick energy boost, but here are some top tips which may help you put a spring back into your step, in time for spring. 1. Consume whole grain, high fibre versions of foods like brown rice or wholemeal bread as these products cause blood sugar to rise slowly (in comparison to simple carbohydrates like white bread which are broken down quickly and can cause blood sugar levels to spike). 2. Did you know that consuming foods which contain fructose (a simple sugar which is naturally found in fruit) leads to lower blood sugar rise compared to foods containing sucrose or glucose? Swap those midday snacks like crisps, chocolate bars, biscuits or sweets for some fruit. Bananas, Oranges, Pineapple, Plums, Apples, Mangoes and Berries like Strawberries, Blueberries and Raspberries are all great choices. 3. Stick to regular mealtimes and make sure that you don’t skip breakfast. A great breakfast choice is porridge with a sprinkle of nuts – or oats topped with fruit. 4. Winter is often a time when we feel under the weather due to the abundance of colds and flu which are going around. Vitamin C contributes to the normal functioning of the immune system and helps contribute to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Good sources of vitamin C include kiwis, peppers, broccoli, mangoes, strawberries and citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruits. 5. Between the autumn and winter months, you need to get your Vitamin D from your food or supplementation due to the sunlight not being strong enough for the body to make its own Vitamin D. Some sources of Vitamin D include oily fish like salmon, mackerel, fresh tuna or foods fortified with Vitamin D like breakfast cereals. The Government also recommends taking a 10 mcg supplement of Vitamin D during the winter months to help keep healthy bones, teeth and muscles. 6. Our last tip to combat those blues is exercise. Taking a break and going for a walk midday which will allow you to get some sunlight and may help put your mind at ease too.

MERCURY M T RS MORE EMERGENCY LAY-BYS TO BE INSTALLED ON SMART MOTORWAYS Highways England has promised to install extra lay-bys on smart motorways in a bid to improve safety. The government-owned firm has said new emergency refuge areas will be added to the most dangerous stretches of motorway to decrease the likelihood of drivers having to stop in live lanes. Smart motorways allow hard shoulders to be used during high-volume traffic to boost capacity. However, this means motorists run the risk of

stopping in the live lanes if they are unable to make it to the nearest refuge area. The move will see the maximum gap between laybys “where practicable” reduced from 1.5 miles to 1 mile. The decision, which aims to provide “greater reassurance to road users”, was made after Highways England carried out a safety review of the new smart motorways. Parts of the M25, M1, M4 and M6 have already been converted into smart motorways, and there are another 480 smart motorway lane miles being planned. There has been growing concerns over smart motorway safety since their introduction, with many motoring groups expressing fears that drivers run the risk of being hit from behind if they stop suddenly in the new lanes. In a letter to the Commons’ Transport Select Committee, Highways England Chief Executive Jim O’Sullivan said: “Evidence demonstrates that ALR (all lane running or smart motorways) delivers comparable levels of safety to traditional motorways – including a significant improvement on the M25.” As part of measures to increase the safety of smart motorways, harsher penalties for drivers found using lanes with a red X sign on overhead gantries will come into effect this March.

SHEFFIELD MUSIC HUB WINS A WILL MICHAEL JAZZ AWARD

Sheffield Music Hub was delighted to be awarded a Will Michael Jazz Education Award on the 22nd November 2017 at Trinity Laban Conservatoire, London. This Jazz Education award is in recognition of the outstanding commitment to Jazz Education. Colette Dutot, Sheffield Music Hub Manager stated “I was delighted to collect this award on behalf of the Jazz Team celebrating eight years of work with children and young people, schools, colleagues, jazz artists, composers, organisations and key influencers. Every Thursday, I have the privilege of seeing the utter joy that exploration can bring. When improvising, we appreciate each of our unique sounds whilst building our skills, language and expression as a group. Over time, the energy builds as each young person comes back week after week with their own development… that’s when the sprinkling of gold dust happens”. At the event, Sheffield Music Hub was celebrated for: •A clear and ambitious Jazz Vision that uses a six strand model • Weekly jazz education workshops run by four jazz education specialists which has a focus on discovering how to improvise • Strong parental and school involvement both initially and through the students’ jazz experience journey • Working with Jazz artists and composers, on large and small scales

Ian Naylor, Head of Music Education at Sheffield City Council said “I’m really proud of the work we are doing in Sheffield to promote Jazz and all forms of musical creativity. Access to musical activity like this opens up so many wider skills to equip our children and young people for life in the real world. Increasingly employers are looking for creative thinkers to enhance their organisations and this kind of musical activity helps develop humanity in an increasingly data driven world.” The presenter, Leslie East, commented on the national picture for Jazz Education acknowledging that a successful jazz education within a Hub or music service depends on the dedication, industry and inspiration of a few individuals. Seven Music Education Hubs (123 Hubs in England) were awarded Jazz Education Diplomas were Bromley, Cumbria (BlueJam Arts), Devon, Doncaster, Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire and Sheffield with an individual award to Daniel Mar-Molinero (Southampton).

Music Hubs in South Yorkshire along with Cumbria and Lancashire, and Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire were highly celebrated for working in regional collaborations. The Will Michael Awards are in memory of Will Michael who died tragically early in 2008. Will was a respected and highly successful educator on both local and national stages.

What is next for Jazz & creative music making …. • Myth of Her – SoundLab with the international female artists Sarah Sayeed & Anne Eltard (Jan 2018) • HubFest – 8th July 2018 A full day festival with two stages featuring young artists from across the city at at Yellow Arch Studios on Sunday 8th July 2018. Do you wish to be one of the artists – find out more here: • Sheffield Youth Jazz Collective sheffieldmusichub.org/sing-andplay/intermediate-jazz-band • Sponsorship….if you love the Jazz, and want to be part of an exciting adventure then contact Colette Dutot on 0789 683 2042.

Colette Dutot, SMH Manager, was delighted to collect the award on behalf of the SMH Jazz Team – Travis Finch, David Burgoyne & Chris Burge.

FROM LAS VEGAS TO SCARBOROUGH - BRITNEY ANNOUNCES YORKSHIRE DATE ON “BRITNEY: PIECE OF ME” TOUR Legendary pop icon Britney Spears has announced her exclusive last time ever, limited tour of her award-winning and record-breaking show, “Britney: Piece of Me.” For the first and only time, “Britney: Piece of Me” will visit Europe for a very limited engagement for fans that were not able to see the show in Las Vegas with Scarbrough Open Air Theatre hosting the megastar on Friday 17th August. This tour follows Britney’s recordbreaking, four-year headlining residency, “Britney: Piece of Me” at The AXIS at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, where Britney received rave reviews from both critics and fans alike since opening in Dec. 2013. As the first contemporary superstar resident in the city, Britney and Caesars Entertainment pioneered the groundbreaking paradigm shift and revitalized the modern era of entertainment in Las Vegas in

Planet Hollywood’s world-class theater. With over 250 shows, the record-setting residency was sold out on a regular basis, generating over $140 million gross revenue and selling nearly 1 million tickets. “Britney: Piece of Me” was voted the “Best Resident Performer,” “Best Production Show,” “Best Bachelorette Party” and “Best Bachelor Party” by readers of the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Hollywood’s biggest names, such as; Beyoncé, Jay Z, Lady Gaga, Anna Kendrick, Nick Jonas, Miley Cyrus, Kirsten Dunst, Chloë Grace Moretz, Calvin Harris, Sia, Selena Gomez, Katy Perry and Steven Tyler have all attended “Piece of Me.” This exclusive US East Coast and Europe tour is the last time anybody will see the show. Initial demand for the “Britney: Piece of Me” tour, which will visit intimate venues on the US East Coast to really capture the look

Chart topping singer and one of the main vocalists from Band Aid Paul Young comes to the Foundry at Sheffield University on Thursday February 8th. Paul was a huge star during the 1980s and is famous for hit singles such as “Love of the Common People”, “Wherever I Lay My Hat”, “Come Back and Stay”, “Everytime You Go Away” and “Everything Must Change”, all reaching the top 10 of the UK Singles Chart. Released in 1983, his debut album No Parlez, the first of three UK number one albums, turned him into a household name. His smooth yet soulful voice belonged to a genre known as “blue-eyed soul”. At the 1985 Brit Awards, Young received the award for Best British Male. In July 1985, Young appeared at Live Aid held at Wembley Stadium, London, performing the Band Aid hit “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” (having sung the opening lines on the original single release), and his own hits “Come Back and Stay” and “Everytime You Go Away”, with Alison Moyet joining him on stage to perform “That’s The Way Love Is”. “Everytime You Go Away” reached number one in the US in 1985, and won Best British Video at the 1986 Brit Awards. Since the mid-1990s, he has performed with his band Los Pacaminos. Other highlights of Paul’s illustrious career include singing the Crowded House track “Don’t Dream It’s Over” at the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute in 1988, producing a popular

The album included the hit singles from Young’s first four solo albums, the three above-mentioned songs, and a previously unreleased selection called “I’m Only Foolin’ Myself”. Paul has continued to perform and release new material and towards the end of 2015, Paul was contacted by Gary Barlow and asked to consider recording a song for a soundtrack that Gary was producing for a movie based around the story of Eddie The Eagle (which was released in March 2016) The song in question “People Like Us” was a perfect fit for Paul. 2016, saw Paul Young release his brand new album “Good Thing”. COUNTY SENIOR FOOTBALL with Michael Clarke

2018 has not been kind to the County Senior League thus far, and this weekend was no different as further wintry weather led to the postponement of all but seven league games.

I’m still in a dark place this week… I don’t mind admitting that after a blistering 2017, with fish almost jumping up the bank, my year so far has been nothing but a struggle, and I’m not sure how to get going again… In fact, it’s been so bad, that this week I’ve been out three times trying to put something on the bank worth writing about, but sadly, once again, I’ve not really achieved anything special. I’ve previously mentioned the purchase of new club cards this year, so my first foray was to a stretch of canal I’ve driven over many times on my way elsewhere, but never fished, so I made an effort to go and explore the new venue. Parking is easy, so I dumped the van by the gate, heaved my lure bag onto my shoulder, grabbed my rod, and marched to the towpath; at least I’d got that bit right! The stretch is jam packed with fish holding features, a trio of bridges, narrows, deeps, wides, overhanging trees, and lined with reeds, so it really is a perfect lure fishing environment, and I couldn’t wait to get a lure in the water! My Sonik Light-Tec easily doubles as a dropshot and light jig rod, so I added a small perch coloured shad, and flicked it across the marginal reeds on a 0.4g jig head before twitching it back across the bottom… nothing. Half a dozen casts proved fruitless, so it was time to move on. At this time of year, perch are often shoaled up in tight groups, so it is imperative to find them; if you don’t, then huge swatches of canal are virtually empty of fish, and you are wasting time, and effort, trying to catch. A couple of casts is sometimes all it takes to establish that fish are in the area, and lure fishing is a quick, mobile method which allows the angler to cover a lot of ground quickly; perfect for winter! Narrow boats often provide warmth and shelter for fish, so my next few casts zipped along the underside of the barges, hoping to find a few predators. I tried short hops across the bottom, fast retrieves in mid-water, sink and draw types recoveries, but nothing worked there either… Eventually, I’d walked around a mile and a half, explored every likely spot, but still not had so much as a pluck at any of my lures! The water was absolutely crystal clear, so not ideal, but I was extremely disappointed not to have had a single bite! I made a few changes to my set up, and worked my way back down towards the van, revisiting every likely swim, just in case I’d missed something… I hadn’t. The walk back was also fishless, and as the snow flecked down, I was starting to consider going home, sodden, and defeated. As I arrived back at my starting point, I dropped my tiny lure into the water, exploring the near shelf, and twitched the shad around the reeds, hoping for a ‘last cast’ miracle. I can’t say it was such an event, but a tiny nip at the lure, barely felt, saw me lift one of the smallest perch I’d ever seen from the water. It wasn’t even hooked, instead the paddle tail had filled its mouth, and it couldn’t let go! No matter, it was a blank saver, and by fining down the tackle yet further, I managed around twenty tiddlers, and missed many more, all from an area little bigger than a dinner plate… I told you they were tightly shoaled! A second session on the same club card to yet another new water revealed nothing. This time a pool of slightly less than two acres, again surrounded by perfect fish holding cover, but seemingly devoid of fish! I wandered for about two hours, swapping between dropshot to explore holes in the reeds, and around sunken branches, and then to a heavier lure to fathom the water further out, but to no avail; I couldn’t raise a bite anywhere, and I never saw a single sign either… I’m not alone though, other anglers had ventured onto similar waters in the

Premier Division The Premier Division saw the bulk of the action with four games getting the green light. Jubilee Sports were the only team in action in the top three, as they faced North Gawber Colliery at Chaucer School. They were unable to put real pressure on the leaders though, as they were held to a 2-2 draw by 10 men North Gawber. Arguably the biggest game in the Premier Division this weekend came at the UPVC Trade Centre Ground, where second bottom Denaby Main hosted bottom side Millmoor Juniors. Goals from Brandon Bagley, Daniel Eley and Alun Walters gave Denaby a 3-2 victory, which is enough to take them out of the bottom two. Goals from Ben Furniss and Bradley Hanson gave Frecheville a 2-0 home win against Wombwell Main. Frecheville are now unbeaten in six games

area without result, but for the life of me, I can’t work out why the fish aren’t feeding! A final visit saw me back on a club water I can only describe as ‘fish soup’ (I’ll take any help I can get!) where I wanted to target bream, carp, or odd barbel. Unfortunately, this particular water often ‘switches off’ completely after any period of cold weather, so after defrosting the van, I knew I would struggle. Pellet tactics dominate, with match anglers throwing in tons of the stuff whilst hauling double figure carp, and slab sided bream to the waiting net, so I opted for tiny pva bags containing just five pellets, and on the hook, a banded 8mm wafter. The fish often withdraw to long range too, so I endeavoured to chuck it as far as I could, tightened up the ‘tip, and sat back to wait. An hour later, the ‘tip hadn’t even trembled, so I wound in to check the hookbait, then added another tiny bag, and fired it back out. Another hour, still nothing… I’d been feeding a few pellets closer in, hoping to see a carp go ‘tails up’ over the bait, but in the gin clear, freezing waters, I could see everything except fish! I changed tactics, swapping to a lighter rod, and groundbait feeder, with sweetcorn on the hook, but after another three hours of complete boredom, I still hadn’t had a bite! Things were desperate indeed! I could still see the pellets on the lake bed in about four feet of water. They had broken down to leave a patch spotted with pale circles, and this came to the attention of the resident birdlife. I couldn’t identify one pair of avian experts, who seemed to be able to travel huge distances under water, without raising so much as a bubble to mark their passing, and I marvelled at the plumage of the male, which was a brilliant white, shot through with black, and the female, slightly dowdy, with hues of brown and beige. I Googled ‘white UK waterfowl’ and still couldn’t find them, but continued to watch as they hoovered the bottom clean. I noted the approach of a couple of ‘twitchers’ armed with camera, binoculars and notepads, and saw them stop dead in their tracks as they spotted my feathered accomplices. The birdwatchers studied the birds avidly, being careful not to approach too closely, whilst trying to get the perfect photograph. By now, I was intrigued, and wanted to know what they knew. I have never heard of a Smew, but that is apparently what they were. A rare visitor to the UK, with less than two hundred birds usually recorded, and extremely unusual to spot this far north in this country. So, despite a fishless few hours on the bank (again!) I had seen something of worth, even if I didn’t realise it at the time… it’s just one of the reasons, as anglers, we go fishing. It’s not always about the fish; (although I wouldn’t mind catching some) sometimes, you see things that others do not, and to me, that’s what makes fishing special, and it’s just one of the reasons I keep going back…even if I don’t catch anything!

and climb into fourth position, just three points off the pace-setters Grimethorpe Sports. Oughtibridge WMFC claimed a 3-1 away win over Handsworth Parramore Reserves, thanks to goals from Alex Torr, Charles Tunnard and Oliver Cockbill-Black. Division One Dodworth Miners Welfare were made to work hard for a 1-0 win against second bottom Stocksbridge Park Steels Development. It was yet another win for Dodworth though, who have won all 12 of their league games this term, giving them a whopping 18 point lead atop Division One. Division Two It was another good weekend for Burngreave FC. Firstly, second placed Boynton Sports were held to a 1-1 draw away against Manor Hotel. All this whilst, Burngreave beat AFC Dronfield Reserves 7-1 at Firvale Academy, with goals from Amer Qassim, Mahad Warsame (2), Ali Elkossi, Tawfiq Al-Hakam, Essa Ahmed and Mubarik Ahmed. Burngreave now lead Boynton by five points, with two games spare.

‘EXCELLENT’ MILLERS DELIGHT WARNE AFTER LATE WINNER Millers boss Paul Warne reflected on his side’s performance after a 1-0 win over Portsmouth at the AESSEAL New York Stadium. Speaking straight after seeing his side go eight matches unbeaten, Warne said: “I thought my team were excellent today. I thought, first half, we were the better team but we weren’t incisive enough. We didn’t put enough crosses in the box and we discussed that at half-time. “We tried to change it and upped the tempo a little bit. The lads gained confidence from that. I thought our second-half performance merited a win. Goodness knows how many corners we had, we must have had 15! It didn’t seem to drop to the right person at the right time. Match Reports Match report for Rotherham United vs Portsmouth on 20 Jan 18 20 January 2018 “There were some really good performances today, which makes me really proud. The three subs who went on today all had a massive impact. The changing room was bouncing in there, they’re a really close group and were pleased to get the three points. “First-half we didn’t do things quick enough, we didn’t move the ball quick enough. When we got

it out wide we were looking for the perfect cross as opposed to just making them defend. We were much better in the second half and got much more crosses in. We had a real go at them.” Joe Mattock powered home a last-minute header to win the dominant Millers all of the points against Pompey. Warne continued: “Joe Newell came on – I thought Willo (Ryan Williams) had a great game – but I just wanted something different. Him and Mattock were putting loads of balls in. I thought Smudge (Michael Smith) for his home debut was excellent. We’re working with him all the time and trying to get him to be the best he can be. I felt he was a real handful. “The most pleasing thing for me is Joe Mattock, our left-back in injury-time scoring the winner. It shows how much the lads want to win and how fit and determined they are. So, it was good scenes at the end of the game for sure. “I think the fans appreciate how we played today. Even though there was a couple minutes injury time, I didn’t see many people leaving. Even if it would have been a 0-0 I think the fans would have appreciated the lads’ efforts. They tried everything they could, threw the kitchen sink. Credit to Portsmouth, they defended really well. “In fairness, I thought we deserved the win.” The Millers boss spared a word on home debutant Michael Smith, whose cross Mattock turned home at the death. “It’ll take a few weeks to get the most out of him,” continued Warne. “As in like the way we play, the tempo we have and training demands we give him. The coaches are doing a lot of work with him to build him up to be a real threat.”

Former teammates John Breckin and Mark Rhodes paid their respects to the fondlyremembered Millers forward Rodney Fern. Breckin and Rhodes both shared the dressing room with the popular frontman during a hugely successful era for the club which saw them claim the Third Division title. The pair were keen to express their condolences to Rod’s family and friends following the sad news of his passing as they placed on record their memories of their former teammate and friend. “Ferny was a special player and he was a part of a wonderful season,” John Breckin recalled. “There’s no other words for how he played. He scored half-a-dozen goals in little 5-a-sides that we used to play and he just sniffed them out. “I think Rod openly said that he wanted to drop back into midfield because he was in the twilight of his career but Ian Porterfield put him up front and he just hit it off with Ronnie. “They were a great pairing and the goals were just unbelievable that he scored. “He was great in the dressing room as well and a real character. All the lads had so much respect for him and he had that at all the clubs he’d been at. He really took Mark Rhodes, who was just a young kid coming through at the time, under his wing and they went on to become really big mates. “I remember playing it through in the game against Plymouth. I saw him making his run and I saw the centre half had got mixed up and missed it. Ferny went through and he took ages to put the ball in the net. The lads asked him after why it had taken so long and he said: “I was just waiting for the ‘keeper to move. “That was him. He was just clinical and an outand-out predator of a striker that would be worth a fortune now.” - John Breckin It was widely-regarded in the dressing room at the time that Fern was quick to help the younger players using his experience in the game and

29

one player that particularly benefited from his tutoring was the emerging talent of Mark Rhodes. “We were roommates on away trips, and he was great company. He knew the game inside out and spoke a lot of sense. He was just a really good pal,” Mark recounted. “He commanded respect in the dressing room. He wasn’t loud, but we all respected him. - Mark Rhodes “He had such a sharp wit, he never missed a trick and he could defend himself with that. I think that is why we got on so well. We had a similar sense of humour. “The thing I would say about Rod is that he was the most intelligent footballer that I ever played with. He may have been in his 30s when he joined us, but he was so clever on the field that he was always still one step ahead of the opposition. “He had great speed of thought which got him in the right place at the right time, and that brought him many crucial goals. He was the perfect foil for Ronnie, they were such a threat as a pairing. Rod was the ultimate poacher, he was deadly in and around the six yard area. He was always in the right place. “When he arrived he fitted instantly into the club. It was clear early on from his first few training sessions and games that he was a quality player. His control, movement, passing - you could tell he had played at the highest level.”

FERGUSON HAILS BATTLING ROVERS Darren Ferguson felt his side’s battling secondhalf performance at Shrewsbury Town meant they deserved the point. Mat Sadler and Carlton Morris put the Shrews 2-0 up, but goals from Mathieu Baudry and Issam Ben Khemis saw Rovers claim a draw at Montgomery Waters Meadow. “Credit goes to my players because we haven’t lost and in the second half we played just like we knew we could, we matched up to them and started winning everything, the first half we didn’t do any of that and that was the problem,” Ferguson said. “I thought John Marquis was outstanding, and what a performance he gave out their today, and in the second half we got on top, Alfie Beestin coming on stretched them and gave us something extra, and in the second half we played more like us. “Tommy Rowe went to left back, Niall Mason went to right back and Matty Blair gave us that energy in the middle of the park and that shows what good

quality we have, but we have to remember we are in League One and we have to do the basics right first.” Rovers now face a midweek derby against Scunthorpe United on Tuesday, and Ferguson is hopeful that his side can maintain their current momentum. “If we can get to the standards we showed in the second half then there’s no reason why we can’t go on and get the results in this league, we go into Tuesday’s game with great motivation,” he said. “We have to win the battle on Tuesday, that’s what it’ll be at times, but we have to have the composure to play the football we want to play, and a win in midweek can take us 10th, but were taking it a game at a time. “It’s a derby so it’ll be tough, three points on Tuesday would be massive but were finding a way not to lose games and that’s a good habit to have, we’re in a good place right now.”

BAUDRY IMPRESSED WITH CHARACTER

doubt about that, they play with really high quality and high energy, I’m really proud of the team getting a point as we were a lot calmer in the second-half. “I always fancy myself to score a few goals but as team we are all really eager to score goals, we are a side that does not give up and the two goals that we scored showed that.” Rovers had to play the remaining eight minutes of the game with 10-men as Ben Khemis was forced off through injury, despite the injuries, Baudry is keen to make sure that Rovers take it one game at a time in Sky Bet League One. “Butler came off really early in the game and then Ben Khemis went off a bit later and had to finish the game with 10-men, so as well as coming back from two down, we had to deal with that as well,” he said “We are on a great run at the moment and that’s a credit to the team, we are always looking up the table and we will always keep doing it but as the cliché

Central defender Mathieu Baudry was impressed with the character that Rovers showed as they battled back from 2-0 down to secure a point against Shrewsbury Town in Sky Bet League One. Baudry began the fight-back with a perfectly-timed header on the 62nd minute before Issam Ben Khemis came off the bench to score his first Football League goal, and the Frenchman says he always backs himself to score goals whenever he enters the box. “We showed great character to come from two goals down to get a draw, Shrewsbury are a good side and it is not an easy place to come and play football,” he said. “They will be up there at the end of the season no

CCV RETURNS TO SPURS Cameron CarterVickers has returned to Tottenham Hotspur. The defender, who recently turned 20, played 17 times for the Blades - including in the 4-2 victory at Sheffield Wednesday in September. He also scored on his debut at

Bolton. Blades chief Chris Wilder commented: “We thank Cam for his contribution in the first half of the campaign and Spurs for loaning him to us - we hope both feel the loan spell was beneficial.”

VILLA CLASH TELEVISED LIVE ON SKY NEXT WEEK

United’s Sky Bet Championship fixture against Aston Villa which takes place next week, will now be broadcast live on Sky Sports. The rearranged fixture, which will be played on

Tuesday 30th January, owing to United’s involvement in the FA Cup at the weekend, will still kick-off at 7.45pm as originally advertised. In the corresponding fixture in December, which was also televised

on Sky, Clayton Donaldson scored a well-taken brace as the Blades recovered from going 2-0 down inside 10 minutes to earn a deserved point at Villa Park.

BACK TO WINNING WAYS United avenged a defeat by Norwich earlier in the season with a deserved victory at Carrow Road. James Wilson, on his full debut, opened the scoring and substitute Clayton Donaldson added a second after the break. Leonard, Evans and Wilson made their full debuts with Lundstram, Duffy and Donaldson all dropping to the bench, where they were joined by new boy Holmes and young goalkeeper Eastwood after Blackman suffered a training ground injury. Norwich looked to make a fast start in front of their own fans but United opened the scoring from the first corner, which Basham and Baldock combined to force. Fleck delivered, the home side half-cleared but Basham and O’Connell were a nuisance before WILSON spun and beat

goalkeeper Gunn. It was not the start the Canaries wanted and they looked for an immediate response. Evans was well placed to cover when Murphy turned Basham and then Moore collected a freekick from Maddison. Before the 20-minute mark, Gunn was forced into a double save from Leonard and then the goalkeeper prevented Wilson grabbing a second after Clarke flicked on Fleck’s cross. Also, Baldock fired over as United looked to get on top. As half-time approached, Norwich had a spell of pressure. Murphy ran onto Oliveira’s pass but Moore was well placed, the goalkeeper then pushed away Maddison’s free-kick. The final chance of the half also dropped to the home side but Klose’s drilled effort was wide.

United started brightly in the second half, Steven hit the outside of a post and Gunn saved from Leonard after Norwich were caught trying to play out from the back. Leonard had another effort blocked after Fleck tried to put through substitute Donaldson, who did not take long to make an impact. Following Stearman’s clearance, Tettey made a mess of a back pass and Gunn backed off, allowing DONALDSON to progress into the box and clip over the goalkeeper. United’s two-goal advantage, however, lasted a matter of moments as a corner from the right saw PINTO loop a header over Moore into the far corner. Gunn saved Clarke’s half-volley but the Canaries goal gave them momentum and for the final 15 minutes they

were on the offensive. Moore pushed over Zimmermann’s header and Maddison was in the clear but failed to control Hoolahan’s chipped pass. Baldock blocked from Murphy and Stevens robbed Hoolahan in the same move as United defended stoutly. Oliveira turned and fired over when in a good position, whilst five minutes of added time gave the home side hope. But all they could muster were a couple of hopeful free-kicks into the box, including one when goalkeeper Gunn added himself to the attack, but again the Blades defended well to secure a valuable away win.

CHRIS IMPRESSED BY NORWICH DISPLAY A number of facets impressed Chris Wilder in Saturday’s league victory over Norwich City. The 2-1 success at Carrow Road consolidated United’s position in the top six of the Sky Bet Championship. A dominant first half display, the performances of debutants and solid defending were all worthy of mention by the Blades chief when he spoke to the media after the game. Wilder said: “It is tough in the Championship to get the first goal, so when it did come it gave us a lift and settled us down. We dominated the first half and I was a little disappointed that we were not further ahead. We made a few changes and all the new lads contributed, particularly as we dominated the first half. I can’t remember too many real clear-cut chances from Norwich, but we had to be organised when they took risks. They have some good players who push you back, the likes of Maddison, Murphy and Oliveira can open teams so to see it out and get the result was great for us.” Chris handed two debuts and a first start to three of his new signings

at Norwich City and the trio impressed the boss. Speaking after witnessing James Wilson score his first goal for the Blades, with Ryan Leonard and Lee Evans also impressing, the manager remarked: “Attitude wise I never doubted any of the new lads, because we know what we’ve signed in that respect and we’ve signed three players on a permanent basis who I believe will prove to be excellent additions. We talk about the market we deal in and we have to work extremely hard to get these lads in, we work hard from the first minute players come through the door and the lads fitted in seamlessly.” Wilder added: “The lads can be pleased with their first marker but there is more to come. James Wilson will only get fitter and stronger with games, Ryan we knew could comfortably do 90 minutes, Lee Evans just sat and dictated the game like we know he can and Ricky was unfortunate not to get on the pitch. These players are part of the group now and will get better and better the more we work through the week as we aim to produce solid and consistent performances at Championship level.”

at one end of the pitch, he says success will land at the other. He said: “We have to live with the point we achieved in the game today. On one more occasion we would have won the game. “The clean sheets are good because you have to make sure the strong foundations are in place to progress the team. “This gives you the foundation to win matches and today I believe we deserved to win this match. “We had the chances but the little breaks you need did not happen for us today. “But we created the chances and the time for concern is when you do not.”

A STRONG ADDITION The clash with Cardiff came a little too soon for new recruit Joey Pelupessy but Owls manager Jos Luhukay has high hopes for the ex-Heracles Almelo man. The Dutchman completed his move to the Owls on Thursday, trained for the first time Friday and named on the bench on Saturday. But moving forward, Luhukay believes the Owls have made a strong addition to the team and he said: “Joey was with us for the first time Friday in training and I thought it was too early to bring him to the game on Saturday. “He is a player of 24 years

Jordan Thorniley debuted for the Owls on Saturday and impressed new manager Jos Luhukay with his performance. The youngster was one of three centre halves slotted into a 3-5-2 formation and helped provide a firm foundation as Wednesday recorded a third clean sheet on the spin. Luhukay said: “It was a good game for Jordan and I am happy he had this chance against a good side like Cardiff. “He played well, he did what he had to do playing

of age but has a lot of experience. “He was the captain of his team, a defending midfielder with a good eye for the pass and he is very strong in the one against one defending. “We hope he can be a very good player in the future for us.” Speaking following his side’s 0-0 draw with Cardiff at Hillsborough, Luhukay added: “It was important that he trained with us on Friday, was close to the team on Saturday and in the next days he can learn his colleagues better, that’s what we want him to do. “I think with his age, it is very positive that in his last club he was captain, he has a very strong mentality. “He is a winner on the field so I am happy with that.”
