OUTDOOR CITY WEEKENDER RETURNS TO SHEFFIELD The Outdoor City Weekender returns to Sheffield for a third helping from 9 to 11 March and promises another actionpacked weekend of fun and adventure. The Weekender revolves around four headline events: the Sheffield Adventure Film Festival, renowned bouldering competition the Rab Climbing Works International Festival, inner-city mountain bike dual slalom the Howard Street Dual and the Magnificent Seven, a multi-stage road bike race up seven
of Sheffield’s steepest hills. Mazher Iqbal, cabinet member for business and investment at Sheffield City Council, said: “The outdoor industry contributes billions of pounds to the UK economy every year, and adventure tourism is increasingly attracting visitors who crave ‘wow’ moments that they can experience and share. “With events such as the Weekender, Sheffield delivers these moments with style, all the while showcasing itself as a destination for people who love
city culture and the great outdoors. “Whether you’re visiting Sheffield or are fortunate enough to call it home, we encourage everyone to discover the many opportunities to get involved with activities on our doorstep. “From cycling and mountain biking to climbing and running – or any of the other many adventure sports available in The Outdoor City – the Weekender provides a brilliant opportunity to get inspired. “So, after you’ve watched the world’s
best compete, why not check out www. theoutdoorcity.co.uk and see how you can take a slice of the action for yourself? “We invite you yearround to come play in The Outdoor City – and the Weekender is the perfect place to start.” One of the highlights of the weekend is the Magnificent Seven on Sunday 11 March. Not for the fainthearted, this unique cycling race is a cross between a sportive and a hill climb that invites participants to face seven of the toughest
hills in Sheffield with climbs ranging from 9 to 23 per cent. The route, which is just over 26 miles long, presents each rider with over 4,200ft of climbing. The event will start and finish in Bradfield for the first time this year to allow more entries and more space for parking. For more information on the Weekender, visit the website at www.theoutdoorcity. co.uk/outdoor-cityweekender.

ALBERT SNODGRASS
Son, “Where are my sunglasses?” Dad, “I don’t know.. where are my dadglasses?” I’ve just been to see that new earthquake movie at the cinema. I’d love to say it was a cracking film but had it had its faults. My deaf girlfriend was talking in her sleep last night. She nearly took my bloody eye out! My wife is complaining that I never buy her jewellery. In my defence, I didn’t even know she sold jewellery. My wife is obsessed with her new tropical juice diet. It’s enough to make a mango crazy. “How’s the January diet going?” I asked my mate. “Not good” he sighed, “I had ten eggs for breakfast this morning” “Oh dear”, “Fried?” “No, Chocolate”

The world's leading darts players will return to The FlyDSA Arena on Thursday April 12th as the 2018 Unibet Premier League makes its annual visit to Sheffield for a 12th time. Rob Cross, Daryl Gurney, Mensur Suljovic and Gerwyn Price will make their debut in the Unibet Premier League in 2018 following the confirmation of the field for the 16-week roadshow event. Cross capped an incredible debut year as a professional by winning the World Championship final at Alexandra Palace on Monday night, and headlines four new faces for the 2018 Unibet Premier League. World Grand Prix champion Daryl Gurney, Champions League of Darts winner Mensur Suljovic and 2017 UK Open finalist Gerwyn Price will also come in to make their Premier League debuts. Michael van Gerwen will be bidding to win his fourth Premier League title as the defending champion when the 2018 season begins at Dublin's 3Arena on Thursday February 1. Van Gerwen and Cross are joined as automatic selections from the world's top four ranked players by 2017 Premier League finalist Peter Wright and two-time champion Gary Anderson. Former champion Raymond van Barneveld joins Gurney, Suljovic and Price amongst the six Wildcard selections, alongside 2012 runner-up Simon Whitlock and former World Youth Champion Michael Smith, who both return to the Premier League field this year. "It's a very fresh looking Premier League," said PDC Chairman Barry Hearn. "We've got four debutants and a truly global field. "It's unbelievable - for Rob Cross to go into number three in the world takes away a selection problem. "The other six were really difficult to get because we had so many contenders, and so many great players who've been in it for a number of years.
"Rob has got focus, he's got ability, he's got bottle. He's a champion, he's a winner and he's going to love the Premier League. "He has his feet on the ground, he seems a very sensible young man and I think we've got a new superstar, another player who's going to challenge the Michael van Gerwen's, Gary Anderson's and Peter Wright's on a regular basis." Hearn added: "Mensur is a fans' favourite, he's got a wonderful personality and he's a winner. Look at his consistency over the year - Premier League selections are not just about the World Championship, they're about results over 12 months. "The World Championship is the most important result but it's not the only criteria. Mensur has been fantastic all season and thoroughly deserves his chance in the Premier League." The ten players will face each other once over the first nine weeks, before the bottom two players are eliminated following Judgement Night at The SSE Arena in Belfast on Thursday March 29. The remaining eight players then meet for a second time in the league before the top four players progress to compete in the Play-Offs at The O2 in London on Thursday May 17. Former champion James Wade, 2011 finalist Adrian Lewis, Jelle Klaasen and Kim Huybrechts also drop out of the Premier League after competing in 2017, while Hearn also revealed that Dimitri Van den Bergh and Jamie Lewis were considered for selection following their impressive World Championship displays.#

NEW ONLINE FILM TACKLES STIGMA AROUND OLDER DRINKERS 100 Well Known Songs
The number of people in the UK aged 50 plus experiencing alcohol related harm is increasing. The reasons for this are complex, but one of the main barriers to older adults getting help is the stigma around alcohol use – particularly with this age group. A short film launched by Drink Wise, Age Well – a programme aimed at helping the over 50s make healthier choices about alcohol – looks at some of the key reasons older people drink, in a bid to generate better understanding of the tough later life realities that could lead any one of us to drink more than we should. A major study for Drink Wise, Age Well when it was first established revealed that of those aged 50 plus

who said they were drinking more now than in the past, retirement (40%); bereavement (26%) and loss of sense of purpose (20%) were the main reasons given. The film is centred on four characters going through key life transitions that have triggered harmful drinking. Middle-aged couple Derek and Jackie are coming to terms with life after their children have left home, while Kevin has recently retired from running his own small business and grandmother, Liz, is having the pain of losing her husband compounded by family conflict arising from her main coping mechanism – frequent drinking. Endless days stretching out ahead with no commitments might seem like heaven to many people. But for some older adults a lack of structure in their day – whether due to retirement, bereavement or “empty-nest” - can cause problem drinking, which can lead to serious health conditions. Julie Breslin, Head of the Drink Wise, Age Well programme said, “Significant cultural changes and an ageing population means harmful drinking in the over 50s is showing up in national statistics as never before. “Increasing alcohol consumption in our ageing population has been well documented, but the reasons behind it less so. Approximately one in three older adults with an alcohol problem first develop it later in
life, often for changes we will all go through. Retirement and bereavement can leave older adults feeling isolated and drinking at home to cope. “We hope this film will highlight to friends, families, peers and partners of older adults who drink problematically that there are sometimes understandable reasons why they do so. It might even make people stop and think that older relatives could be drinking, but keeping it hidden to avoid the shame.” The thought-provoking film shot in the style of a nature documentary can be seen at www.drinkwiseagewell.org. uk where there is plenty of help and advice. If you are a Sheffield resident and would like to speak to someone about your own or a loved one’s drinking call 0800 032 3723.

with the YOUDAN TROPHY name. That claim was emphatically rejected. It had, indeed, always been our contention that, despite winning the world’s first-ever football tournament in 1867 – the Football Challenge Cup, sponsored by Sheffield theatre owner Thomas Youdan – Hallam F.C. did not own rights in the name. “We are aware that the nature and implications of the legal challenge being mounted against us were frequently misunderstood, which gave rise to concerns in some quarters. We therefore take this opportunity to thank the many who have supported us unwaveringly throughout this most unfortunate and, in our view, quite unnecessary legal process. “Naturally we are delighted to have our position vindicated. The original decision of the UK’s Intellectual Property Office in 2016 was, in our view, clearly correct. It was timeconsuming, costly and distracting to have to deal with a long-drawn out appeal. In fact, the dispute has gone on so long that the original logo we sought to protect through registration in 2014 has already been modernised. “Having successfully concluded the case, we can now focus still harder on our vision of building a programme which capitalises on the fantastic energy, commitment and footballing heritage of Sheffield. The Youdan Trophy is already growing year-on-year. Even before last year’s tournament was over we had already had clubs from all over the world seeking admission to our 2018 event. We have worked

TOP TIPS FOR YOUR HOUSEHOLD ODDS AND ENDS! Our drawers are usually full of odds and ends such as paperclips and rubber bands. In addition most of us have things lying around without being aware of some of the things they can do for us! Here are some of our favourtie tips to make life easier.
Paperclips are a handy office essential, but if you only use them to keep your papers organised, you’re missing a trick. Fasten a roll of wrapping paper Keep rolls of wrapping paper organised and prevent the ends from damage by securing a paperclip at each end of the roll. It will hold the paper in place and prevent it from unravelling. Close food packets Plastic food packets can be notoriously difficult to keep shut. Instead of trying to wrestle with the reusable sticker that comes with a loaf of bread or packet of rice, simply unwind a paperclip. You can twist the ends together to keep the food inside fresh. Fix a zipper If the zipper falls off an item of clothing, you can quickly replace it by looping a paperclip through the clasp instead. This is also useful for items of clothing that have zippers that are too small. Keep your tape organised Trying to find the edge of a roll of tape – particularly scotch tape – can be a hassle, especially when you’re trying to get a task done quickly. To make quick work of this, when you are finished using your tape, wrap a paperclip around the end. Next time, you’ll know exactly where the roll begins and can get at it quickly..
Arrange flowers Securing a rubber band to the bottom of a bouquet will help keep your blooms together and assembled nicely even after you’ve trimmed the stems and put them into a vase. Give your waistline some breathing room If you have a pair of jeans or trousers that are fitting a little snugly, loop an elastic band through the button hole and then loop the other end over the button instead. The elastic band will hold your trousers shut but provide a little extra stretch so you can breathe and sit down more comfortably. Mark the liquid in a can or bottle If you have paint cans and other containers of cleaning fluids gathering dust in your garage or garden shed, try this simple trick. Wrap an elastic band around the outside of the can and adjust it to be level with the amount of liquid left inside the can. You’ll be able to see at a glance which supplies you have plenty of and which will need to be replenished soon without ever having to open them.
Nail varnish remover is a popular household staple, with a whole host of alternative uses you can try. Remove stickers If you’ve ever tried to remove a sticker from a glass jar or other item, you know how frustrating it can be to try and remove the sticky residue left behind. Make easy work of sticker removal by finishing with nail polish remover – it will cut through any remaining glue and leave you with a clean surface. Clean stained china If you have china mugs that have long since been stained by coffee and tea, try Rubber bands are often the sort of this: soak some nail varnish remover on household item you find at the bottom of an old cloth, then dab gently at any stains drawers. until they fade away. it last longer. After using, dip into some nail polish remover, rinse thoroughly, then leave to dry. While drinking tea is of course the best use of a tea bag, there’s plenty of other ways you can put tea bags to good use rather than throwing them in the bin. Boost your garden Tea can be used to protect your plants from fungal infections and to deter garden pests. Rebrew a used tea bag, then water your plants using the weak tea. You can also fertalise the soil by sprinkling over with damp tea leaves. Remove odours Tea leaves are a great absorber of odours, and can be used in a variety of clever ways. Mix dry tea leaves into your cat litter to neutralise smells, or store prebrewed tea bags in the refrigerator to help keep it smelling fresh. Create an air freshener For the same reason, you can create a simple air freshener with a used tea bag. Add several drops of essential oils to a used tea bag and then leave wherever you’d like to add a fresh scent. Deter mice Mice don’t like the smell of tea, and you can deter them from entering well-known spots by placing a used tea bag anywhere they might enter your home. Degrease the dishes You can remove grease from your dishes without chemicals by leaving them to soak in warm water. Add one or two used teabags to the sink – it will help loosen any grease or food residue and cut down on the amount of time you spend scrubbing. Soothe your skin Tea bags can work to soothe your skin in a pinch. Cool, moist teabags placed over the eyes will help reduce puffiness, while rubbing a tea wet tea bag over stings or bites will help draw out the toxins and reduce swelling. Renew wood surfaces Tea can act as a natural stain for wooden surfaces and help bring some of the lustre back to your favourite pieces. The weak tea made from a used tea bag is perfect to clean and shine hardwood floors and polish furniture. Shine mirrors and windows A rebrewed tea bag can help remove grime and stains found on windows and mirrors quickly and easily.

TRAMLINES FESTIVAL MOVES SITE FOR IT’S 10TH YEAR
Sheffield’s Hillsborough Park to become host for 10th edition of Tramlines Festival featuring various stages of music, comedy, cinema, and its biggest lineup yet. Sheffield’s inner-city music festival, Tramlines, will host its 10th anniversary at Hillsborough Park from Friday 20th – Sunday 22nd July 2018. The celebratory move will mark the first Tramlines to be held on just one site. With it comes a bigger capacity – licenced for up to 40,000 people - and the space to programme more festival-style entertainment than before. New additions include a comedy stage, pop-up cinema, kids and family area, a stage programmed by Sheffield institution, the Leadmill, and local legend, Jon McClure (Reverend and The Makers) and much more. Organisers are pulling out all the stops to not only make the 10th anniversary the most memorable yet, but a huge celebration of everything the Steel City has to offer. Tickets are now on sale from £35 plus booking fee and available from www.tramlines. org.uk. From its inception in 2009, Tramlines Festival has been on a continual journey of growth and progression. Its first major move came in 2015 when Tramlines doubled its main stage capacity with a move to Ponderosa Park, followed by a move out of the city centre venues in 2017 and into Sheffield’s parks, to become an exclusively outdoor festival. Over the years, The Libertines, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Sister Sledge, The Charlatans, Public Enemy, Basement Jaxx, Dizzee Rascal, The Coral, All Saints, Kano, Metronomy, The Cribs,
Kelis, Primal Scream, and Toots and The Maytals are just a few of the big names to have graced the Tramlines stages. Whilst the lineup for the 10th year is yet to be announced, it is guaranteed to be its biggest yet, featuring the internationally acclaimed alongside the hottest emerging talent. The move to Hillsborough Park means Tramlines can stage a truly spectacular event with more space to roll out extra entertainment akin to a traditional greenfield festival. In total, four stages will make up Tramlines Festival 2018 including two stages of world-class music from the soon-to-be-announced, genre-busting lineup. New for 2018 is a stage curated, on alternate days, by leading indie venue, the Leadmill and ‘The Reverend’ Jon McClure. The Leadmill will programme an alternative, heritage music offering on Saturday evening, whilst the Reverend’s Sunday Service, takes over the following evening. By day, this stage will induce belly laughs via the country’s leading comedy talent, programmed by Tramlines in conjunction with the Leadmill. Also brand new for the 10th year is the Library Stage. With an overarching leftfield vibe, it’s the place to check out contemporary live performances from a variety of emerging talent. The 10th Tramlines sees the return - and the expansion of - Into The Trees, a new area that was introduced in 2017. A ton of kids and family friendly entertainment has been programmed throughout the day, and post 7pm, an exciting bill of party DJs takeover for a night of dancing! Local breweries and food traders will line the music
and entertainment offering giving festival goers a taste of Sheffield’s finest. Also featured for the first time is a pop-up cinema. As ever, Tramlines remains seriously good value for money. Weekend tickets start from £35 plus booking fee and can be purchased now from www. tramlines.org.uk. Tramlines also remains true to its roots as an inner-city festival. Hillsborough Park is situated just 13 minutes from Sheffield city centre via tram and is walking distance from many postcodes in the city. Tramlines Festival Director, Sarah Nulty, commented: “We really wanted to do something different for the 10th anniversary and moving to a bigger park means we can include lots of extra interesting elements and deliver more than just music - although saying that, we're going bigger than we ever have before with the lineup! It will be a more traditional greenfield format but still within the city. We're staying on the tram lines so that we can remain connected with the city centre our new site is 13 mins from the city centre and only 5 minutes away from last year's main stage. We always wanted to be a city-wide festival, and this just extends the footprint that little bit further. We’re really proud of what we’re delivering for the 10th year and can’t wait to unveil it completely!” For up-to-the-minute information about Tramlines 2018, visit www.tramlines. org.uk or follow Tramlines on social ‘@tramlines’.

LIVE MUSIC RETURNS TO SHEFFIELD’S FOUNDRY Live music is back at Foundry! Located on the ground floor of Sheffield Student’s Union building, this historic venue has seen the likes of The Who, Paul McCartney & Wings, Joe Cocker, Led Zeppelin, The Smiths & The Ramones grace it’s stage over the years. Originally known as the Lower Refectory, the venue and the building it resides in was built in 1963. One of the most famous gigs at the Lower Refectory was on 18th February 1972 when a relatively unknown David Bowie performed under his Ziggy Stardust alias. In more recent times, New
Order bassist Peter Hook, legendary Sheffield synth pop band Heaven 17 and 80’s icon Gary Numan have all played sold out shows at the venue. The venue had a multimillion-pound refurbishment in 2013, when it was fitted with a state of the art sound, lighting and video installation. This year, the venue partnered with national promoters VMS Live, who have been working alongside the in-house staff to bring a fully-fledged live music programme back to the venue. Ash White, an event manager at the venue said “It’s really exciting to see so much live music coming back to the venue. It’s one of the best

In addition, one other act from this series’ live shows will join the lineup. They will be chosen as a wildcard by the British public, via a vote on The Sun Online. The most popular act will receive that all-important seventh and final spot on The X Factor Live Tour 2018. The X Factor digital host, Becca Dudley,
will be on the road with the contestants and presenting the tour competition each night. And at the end of each show, the audience will then become the judges – and choose the winner! The Live Tour will return to Sheffield for the 16th time when it stops off at the FlyDSA Arena on Friday 2nd March 2018. Tickets are priced £22.40, £40.88 & £61.60 (including booking fee) and are available online at www.flydsaarena. co.uk, by phone on 0114 256 56 or in person from the Arena Box Office.
READER COMPETITION FlyDSA Arena have kindly given us a pair of tickets to give away to a lucky reader. Simply answer the following questions and send your entry with a daytime telephone contact number to info@ mercurynewsaper.co.uk or via post to 4b Queens Road, Sheffield S2 4DG before 16/2/18. Finally, the weather provided a little respite this week, so 19 games got the goahead this weekend in what proved to be the busiest match-day thus far in 2018 for the County Senior League. Premier Division We have new leaders atop the Premier Division, with previous league leaders Grimethorpe Sports not in action; they were leap-frogged on goal difference by AFC Penistone Church Reserves. Penistone did so, as they won 9-0 away against Millmoor Juniors thanks to goals from Tom Adams, Reece High (3), Bradley Kemp (2), Cole Barrett (2) and Mark Crossfield. Goals from Leon Howarth (2) and Ben Furniss helped Frecheville to a 3-2 home win over Handsowrth Parramore Reserves. The win lifts Frecheville into third place, three points off the pace. Stocksbirdge Park Steels Reserves sit just a point behind Frecheville after a 5-1 away win over Denaby Main. The Barnsley derby between Wombwell Main and Houghton Main was settled in 4-0 in Wombwell’s favour, with goals from Daniel Burkinshaw, Simon Chadburn, Joe Sidebottom and Daryl Smith. Jubilee Sports extended their unbeaten league run to six games with a 1-1 draw against Denaby United at Old Road. Matthew Thornton scored four times to inspire North Gawber Colliery to a 5-0 win against South Kirkby Colliery at South Kirkby Colliery Miners Welfare. Enzo Guarini (2), Regan Kelly and Shawn Mitchell were all on target as Swinton Athletic beat Oughtibridge WMFC 4-0 at Mexborough Athletic Ground. Division One League leaders Dodworth Miners Welfare proved that 13 is only unlucky for some, as
they recorded their 13th consecutive win, with a 3-1 away win over Caribbean Sports. Dodworth’s nearest challengers High Green Villa trail by 17 points following a 3-2 away win over Silkstone United. Kieran Goff got the only goal as Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 beat Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves 1-0 at Chaucer School. Ecclesfield remain in third place. Hepworth United made it four league games unbeaten, with a 3-1 win against Sheffield Medics at Norton Playing Fields. Fourth placed AFC Dronfield were held to a 2-2 draw by Stocksbridge Park Steels Development at the Look Local Stadium. Goals from Greg Mason (2) and Calum Worthington gave Kiveton Park a 3-2 win over Kiveton Park at St George’s Park. Division Two Burngreave FC made it back-to-back 7-1 victories this week, as they followed last weeks’ win over AFC Dronfield Reserves with a mirror image this week against Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Development. Burngreave now lead the way by eight points, with second placed Boynton Sports not in action this week. Also eight points behind Burngreave are Swinton Athletic Reserves, following their 3-1 win over Working Wonders at Swinton Miners Welfare. Swinton will host Burngreave and Boynton in their final two home games of the season in April. Sheffield Bankers Reserves are also only a point behind Boynton following a 5-2 home win over AFC Dronfield Reserves. A point further back in sixth place are New Bohemians, who were 1-0 winners against Maltby Main Reserves at Forge Valley School. Ryan Smyth scored all three goals for Manor Hotel as they beat Wombwell Main Development 3-1 at Muglet Lane. Josh Sugden scored twice to help Caribbean Sports Reserves to a 4-1 win over North Gawber Colliery Reserves at Woolley Miners Welfare.

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
After a couple of weeks of winter sessions with very little to show for it, I’ve had a little bit more success this week, despite conditions remaining difficult… I put the blame for my failings firmly at the door of the recent weather, with freezing nights, rainy days, and easterly winds chiefly at fault (obviously, it’s nothing to do with me?) so I was delighted to spot a spike in temperatures which I thought may just trigger a feeding spell during the early part of last week. I haven’t been out pike fishing since the end of last year really, and as I love targeting the toothy predators more than any other fish, it was time to try again.
I visited a small stillwater on the Fenton and District Angling Society ticket, a stream fed lake that can change from low and relatively clear, to full and tea coloured overnight after a spell of rain. Obviously, when I arrived, temperatures were still bitterly cold, the water coloured a very murky brown, and the lake full to the brim; not ideal, but I was determined to have a go, so picked my spot and settled in. Before setting up, I wandered around to speak to the only other angler on the lake, also a pike hopeful, for a quick discussion. He told me that this was his third session of the year, the other two had offered nothing, ending in resounding blanks, without so much as a bleep to show for it, and after my last visit had ended fishless, it didn’t exactly cheer me! A few minutes later, we parted company, and kept a wary eye on each other to see who caught first… His two floats, one red tipped, the other yellow, splashed into the water as I pieced together my rods, so I knew where his baits were. I opted to fish legered deadbaits, a Baitbox roach on one rod, and my current favourite, a small joey mackerel on the other. The roach was dropped in a few yards from the bank, and I tightened the line to set the indicator. The mackerel had the head removed, and a small amount of herring oil injected into the abdomen before it too was deposited in a likely spot, where I hoped it would be investigated by one of the resident predators. The pike run to just under 20lb, with a good number of doubles, so with four baits in the water between us, it was time to wait it out. On short, winter day sessions, I like to work the swim positively, rather than lob out the baits and forget about them. I usually start at one side of the swim, and give each bait an hour in situ, before winding in and recasting slightly to the side of the previous position. By working my way across the swim in a fan shape, I can cover much more of the water in front of me, I get chance to check the baits, and ensure nothing is snagged or tangled so I’m not wasting my time; if it is, then it’s only been ineffective for an hour, rather than all day… I feel that currently, in most of the waters I fish, the pike are laying dormant on the lake bed for much of the time, as many of the fish I’ve had recently have

been covered in leeches, indicating a lack of activity. This is another reason I like to explore the swim; if the pike are idle, then I should be a little more active to drop the bait in front of them to hopefully provoke a take. The roach was the first bait to entice some interest, and a single bleep, followed by a small lift of my drop off indicator had me by the side of the rods, fingers pinched around the line. I couldn’t feel anything, nor was the rod tip moving, so after a few seconds waiting, I lifted the rod just in case a pike was trying to swallow the bait before moving away. It wasn’t; the bait showed no teeth marks, so I presume a jack pike had picked up the large roach and thought better of it. I still hear anglers suggesting that deadbaits should left for bites to develop, but personally, I don’t subscribe to that. I’ve often said I’d rather miss or lose a fish, than give it chance to sit on the bottom, turn the bait, and swallow it before I do anything about it. A deep hooked pike can result, so why take the risk? Any indication should be checked out by holding the line, watching the tip, and waiting no longer than a couple of seconds before lifting the rod… just in case! Both rods were retrieved, baits checked, then recast, and I settled back under the brolly as the wind picked up, and the rain started. The other piker hadn’t had anything, but I noted he kept his eye on me, as I did on him; it pays to watch others fish sometimes, especially if you’re both after the same thing! An hour later, the process was repeated, and again the hour after that, but no more bites were registered as the day progressed. The skies darkened, and the rain came down in sheets, and I drank more tea as we both waited… After a few hours, I was beginning to despair; no matter what I did, I couldn’t get any interest, but in my favour, the other angler hadn’t caught either. As I poured yet another brew, my alarm bleeped, and the indicator started to rise before falling away as line slowly peeled off the spool! As I hovered over the rod, the line stopped moving, and again, I thought the fish had dropped the bait, but I wound down hopefully, and struck into solid resistance… a fish at last! I was only fishing a few yards out, and in the cold water, the pike gave a disappointing fight, but I wasn’t bothered, I’d finally got my trebles set, and a chubby predator in the net. A pair of long forceps were enough to release the semi-barbed trebles easily, and it was quickly held up for a photograph before being carried to the margins to recover and swim away strongly… good. I decided on ‘one last cast’ and dropped both baits back out. The wind was really picking up, and I held on to the sides of the brolly, hoping it wouldn’t disappear. The other angler trudged despondently back to his car, once again fishless, and as I contemplated doing the same, the alarm squealed, and I watched the bobbin bounce up sharply towards the blank before dropping away! Once again though, another tentative pick up saw the fish drop the bait, and I didn’t manage to connect with what proved to be the final action of the day. After missing the bite, it offered the perfect excuse to pack up and get out of the wind, so my kit was hurriedly slung in the back in the van before the wind spread it around the lake! Is that the end of my bleak streak? I hope so, but another session beckons soon, so I’ll soon find out! Until then tight lines…

LAVERY LOOKING TO EMULATE LEAGUE Follow Your Local Team Every Week In The Mercury ONE SUCCESS DURING LOAN SPELL
WOOD EXTENDS MILLERS DEAL Rotherham United defender Richard Wood has penned a new deal with the club. The Millers skipper has agreed an extension on his current contract which will take him through to the summer of 2019. The former Sheffield Wednesday and Coventry City ace has been a regular for Paul Warne’s side this season, making 25 appearances in all competitions to date. He also netted the winner in the away success against Rochdale back in October. “I am very pleased,” Wood told iFollow Millers. “I had six months to run on my contract so I am very happy to sign an extra year on top of this season. It has been difficult at times over the past few years, but under the current manager Paul Warne, he has had a lot of belief in me and looks to me to be a senior figure in the dressing room. It has been much more settled since he took the job, so I am very happy that we have been able to sort something out.” This 32-year-old, who joined the Millers back June 2014, was delighted to put pen-to-paper,
and is looking forward to helping the club maintain their sparkling recent form which has seen Warne’s side go nine games unbeaten. “It is going well at the moment,” he added. “All I want to do is play games, and if I’m not involved I am always knocking on his door. We are getting there, we are on a good run at the moment and it is good to be playing in a settled back five.” Wood has performed alongside Semi Ajayi to forge a formidable partnership which has been the cornerstone of the recent clean sheets against Portsmouth and Bradford City. The Wakefield-born operator has hailed the recent displays of his central defensive partner, as he looks to pick up where he left off following the break in fixtures this weekend. “Semi has come back in and has been unbelievable,” he continued. “He has definitely got all the attributes, and if I can help him and we can keep producing clean sheets like we have done over the last couple of games, then all the better.”

group, which is always nice. “I’m looking forward to it and the Gaffer definitely did a good job in selling in to me.” Lavery joins to bolster the Millers attacking options following the arrival of Michael Smith from Bury during the January transfer window and concedes that he knows a place in Warne’s squad will have to be earned and not guaranteed but is happy to put in the necessary work to secure a starting berth. New loan acquisition Caolan Lavery insists “I’ve got to get myself in the team first of all, his early impressions of Rotherham United evoke a number of qualities from the Sheffield which won’t be easy because the lads are doing so well, but I’m looking forward to getting a run United team that stormed Sky Bet League in the side and hopefully scoring some goals. The Canada-born attacker featured 30 times “I’d like to think I’m a pretty honest lad. I’ll in league and cup competitions for Chris Wilder’s side last season before an injury halted work hard for the team which I think everyone should do, regardless his progress at the beginning of the 2017/18 campaign and having met with Millers boss Paul “I’m a hard-working centre forward and I try to put myself about. BOSS PLEASED WITH OVERALL DISPLAY Darren Ferguson is confident Rovers can bounce back following his side’s first defeat in nine league games against Bristol Rovers. John Marquis grabbed the opener, before goals from Ryan Sweeney, Rory Gaffney and Ellis Harrison saw the Pirates turn the game on its head, but Ferguson believes his team’s performance wasn’t reflected in the result. “It’s a poor result but I thought some of our play was outstanding and we passed them off the pitch at times, we played the way I wanted us to play and we had so many chances to score,” he said. “Matty Blair’s miss at 2-1 down is pivotal, but in terms of the way we started the game, we were able to exploit weaknesses in their side and I’m delighted that John was able to get his goal. “We were on top for the majority of the game, and a lot of the stuff we did was really good, but we’re unlucky to have lost a centre half so early on for the third game in a row.”
Rovers’ defeat did spring up a positive in the sense that Marquis scored his first goal in 12 games, and Ferguson was delighted to see the striker end his drought. “He’s brave the boy and he was in a position where he couldn’t miss it, it’s a great ball in from Matty Blair and he’s got in between the sticks to score,” he added. “I think John has shown that he’s a better finisher when he doesn’t have to think about it, he’s had a couple he’s missed where he’s been one-on-one, so I was delighted for him because his performances have been so consistent. “Alfie Beestin was excellent today too so hopefully now we can see to start a partnership forming where not only are they playing well together but scoring goals too.” Rovers’ next home game sees Charlton Athletic visit the Keepmoat Stadium on Saturday February 10. MARQUIS LOOKING FOR MORE GOALS
“I’ve got a manager that believes in me and that is big for any striker, i couldn’t become too fixated with trying to score because the most important thing will always be the team doing well.” The loss against Bristol Rovers ended a run of eight matches unbeaten for Darren Ferguson’s side, and Marquis says the team can’t dwell on the result too much. He added: “We played quite well for the majority of the game, it was just our final pass or final shot which let us down and we couldn’t add to the early goal. “It’s important now that we try and go on another unbeaten run, when i haven’t been in the goals the likes of Alfie Beestin and Ben Whiteman have been stepping up. “We’re doing it tough at the moment with all the injuries we’ve got in defence, they’re all tough players so we’ll miss them but the three lads back there today did really well.”
John Marquis is targeting a goalscoring run after netting his eighth goal of the season in the defeat to Bristol Rovers at the Keepmoat Stadium. Marquis’ opener after four minutes wasn’t enough to earn Rovers a positive result, but the front-man is now focusing on adding to his tally further in the second half of the season. He said: “It’s been in the back of my mind for a while about not getting goals but i feel like my performances have been very good, and the goals are the only thing that’s been missing. “The manager said to me not to worry too much as the goals would come, it is a relief and hopefully now i can put a run together as i haven’t been able to do that so far this season.

UNITED U18S LOSE OUT IN DERBY PAYING TRIBUTE TO TONY CURRIE United’s U18s came up short in the junior steel city derby on Saturday. Sam Graham headed the Blades into an early lead, but a brace from Ben Hughes and a strike from Alex Hunt were enough for the Owls to take all three points. The Blades started on the front foot and put the Owls under heavy pressure which was rewarded when GRAHAM towered above everyone to head home on 15 minutes.
The scores were soon level however as within two minutes Wednesday restored parity, with HUGHES netting from close-range. After the interval United pushed on to try and regain the advantage with Ackroyd and then Doherty only denied by excellent saves from the Wednesday goalkeeper. Dewhurst would be called into action to keep the scores level as he made a great one on one
save at the other end. But moments later the lead would be Wednesday’s with HUNT giving Dewhurst very little chance from a free kick just before the hour. United made
changes in an attempt to find an equaliser and threw bodies forward but it was Wednesday who got the game’s decisive fourth goal through HUGHES.
BLADES THROUGH TO LAST 16 United advanced through to the last 16 of the Emirates FA Cup with victory over Preston North End at Bramall Lane. In a game of few clear cut chances, Billy Sharp’s late penalty in front of the Kop proved decisive. For the fourth-round tie, Heneghan was handed his debut, with Ched Evans returning amongst the substitutes for the first time since ankle surgery. There were a total of seven changes, with Leonard, Lee Evans and Holmes all cup-tied. The first action of note came in the fourth minute, with Welsh lucky to only see yellow for a reckless and dangerous lunge from behind on a turning Duffy. United had shaded
a scrappy opening 15 minutes, before Donaldson fired wide at the near post after a cross from the overlapping Baldock. Donaldson then nearly forced Fisher into a speculator own-goal, before Stearman fired over from the resulting corner. As the half hour ticked by, referee Scott again had his yellow out of his pocket, this time for Lafferty, for a mistimed tackle on Fisher. The Blades ended the half positively, with two corners in succession, but despite having numbers there, Preston defended them well. United were quickly out of the blocks in the second-half and Donaldson came within a matter of inches of turning Duffy’s near post, only to see the
effort hit the side netting. In the 52nd minute, the deadlock was almost broken in front of the Kop, only for Rudd to deny Lafferty from point-blank range from another right-wing centre from Duffy. Lundstram was then booked, despite appearing to get some of the ball, when challenging Horgan. As the hour mark approached, Wilder made two positive changes, with Basham and Evans replacing Heneghan and Donaldson. Preston introduced Hugill from the bench, before Johnson was booked for a lunge on Fleck. Preston’s first serious threat on United’s goal came with 12 minutes remaining, Johnson engineered time and space on the edge of the

box and his effort was inches wide with Moore scrambling across his line. But within a couple of minutes the Blades were in front from the penalty spot. Basham’s pinpoint ball forward found SHARP and Clarke was adjudged to have not played the ball when sliding in to block. From twelve yards, the United skipper confidently fired past Rudd. Four minutes of added time were signalled and after an earlier challenge on Moult, the goalkeeper was in the right place to deny Hugill from six yards out and that was enough to see of the challenge of North End.
This February marks 50 years since Tony Currie arrived at Sheffield United. Since signing from Watford as a teenager and scoring on his debut, he has written himself into Blades history. His performances through the 1960s and 1970s paved the way to him being voted United’s greatest ever player. After hanging up his boots, he has headed up United’s Football in the Community programme and more recently has fulfilled the role of the club’s ambassador, representing the Blades at numerous events locally and nationally. Events have been planned to celebrate TC’s 50th anniversary, including special features in UTB - United’s official matchday programme. Coincidentally, United’s
DUFFY HAS 20/20 VISION WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH
Mark Duffy is the latest player to put pen to paper and extend his United stay. The highly influential midfielder will remain with the Blades until at least 2020. The 32-year-old has been a key figure in United’s rise up the Football League in the last 18 months. When Duffy arrived following his release from Birmingham, many were pleased that the club had attracted a proven League One talent. Before joining up with Chris Wilder, Duffy had achieved promotion with
Burton Albion into the Championship and was named in the PFA League One Team of the Year. He is another excellent example of how Wilder has been able to achieve value for money in the transfer market. On the extension, Wilder said: “Having Mark in the building strengthens us and this rewards him for a really good first part of the season at Championship level.” The United boss is not wrong. Duffy has raised his game following a memorable year in the third tier. Having
two home league fixtures in February are against TC’s former clubs Leeds and QPR. UTB wants your memories of the great Tony Currie! Whether it is watching him play, enjoying his soccer schools or meeting him in and around Sheffield... we want to hear from you. In the programme against Leeds and QPR we will print the best memories of TC from Blades fans! As long as it is TC related, the floor is open. struggled in the Championship with Doncaster Rovers and Birmingham in seasons past, he is thriving during the current campaign. In his absence the team look lacklustre in attack. If he has an off game, which is rare, the teams struggle to create chances. The new deal for Duffy is sensible as he will be a few more years into his thirties by the time the contracts ends. However, it does ensure that United will keep hold of their important playmaker, which could prove to be the difference during the remainder of the season.

I am happy right now. But the most important thing is not me, it is the team and the performance in every game. “Against Reading, I don’t think we started the game particularly well but after we fixed a couple of things it was much better. “In the end I thought we played really well and probably deserved to score more than the three we did. We deserved another clean sheet as well and it was cruel on Cammy how their goal went in, but we have to be happy with the overall performance and the result. “I am very proud of the team.”
Having also impressed in the third round against Carlisle, Matias now has his eye on taking his cup pedigree into the Championship. Whilst accepting the task is far from easy in dislodging more established team mates, he has pledged to do all he can to keep on the radar of new boss Jos Luhukay. He added: “He has given

Ben Wilkinson has praised his Owls Under-18 side after their win over city rivals Sheffield United on Saturday. The Wednesday youngsters defeated the Blades 3-1 at Shirecliffe with a commanding performance and Wilkinson says there were many pleasing aspects from the derby. He told swfc.co.uk: “I thought they were excellent to a man. “It was a very good day for us, we played very well but it was the manner of the performance that really stood out. “Our passing and movement all came together, we work hard on that in training so you want to see it in the games. “When we had to defend,
me a lot of confidence and I am trying to give my best for him and the team. I want to keep trying to get better and better. “Maybe I can offer a different solution, who knows? I will do what I have to do right now and that is work hard in training, give my all on the pitch and then I will get the best chance of playing again and again.”
we threw bodies in the way of everything.” Goals from Ben Hughes (2) and Alex Hunt sealed the win for Wednesday after going a goal behind in the contest and Wilkinson added: “There are a lot of local lads in both sides, a lot of pride at stake for them but we wanted to take that derby edge off and keep them concentrated and mentally in the right place. “Fair play to the lads, they were fantastic, the lot of them. “Everyone who played did themselves proud, we’ve been very good the last six to eight weeks and worked very hard.”
