ADRENALINE FUELLED RACING RETURNS TO SHEFFIELD
The ultimate form of head to head mountain bike racing returns to Sheffield City Centre on the 18th March to celebrate the Outdoor City Weekender. The devilishly difficult Howard Street Dual course will pitch the best riders against each other and the resulting spectacle will surprise and delight seasoned race fans, families of all ages and unsuspecting passers by. To enhance the drama this year we will be racing in the dark; once the sun goes down the course will be lit up making the elbow to elbow action even more entertaining. Made possible by Sheffield City Council the riders will race
from the top of Hallam Square, across the front from Sheffield Hallam university’s main building and on down to the bottom of Howard street. They must negotiate a series of features sendable by the best and rollable by all. It mixes man-made constructions with street furniture, flat grass corners and custom wooden features. Last year the finish fadeaway and infamous chaos corner claimed many riders winning ways. Racing will begin at 5pm and finals will commence around 7pm with practice and seeding taking place from 3pm. Dual Slalom is a knockout race format, pitching riders
against each other, literally duelling their way down the hill. The winner stays on and the fastest racers progress through to the finals and the glory. The riders must react fast to get off the start line quickest then push each other to the limits of their skill without pushing so hard they end up on the floor, with their dreams in tatters. In true This is Sheffield style, every rider who races will get a prize from our incredibly generous sponsors combined with a big cheer and all the glory. The fastest racers on the day will get to pick from the pile first. There are spaces for 32 lads and 32 lasses. Due to the nature
of the event entry is by invite only and subject to race experience. Applications for a place are welcomed by filling in details at https://goo. gl/HCFkk7 Dual racing is both spectacular and easy to follow, and will provide as much of a thrill for the spectators as it does the participants themselves.
RE-UPHOLSTERY For more information and to arrange your
With cow-bells and noise-makers lining the track, the racers will be cheered from top to bottom making it great fun for the whole family and the best hecklers in town. Keep up to date with all the latest race information at ThisiSheffield.co.uk

£1.5M FUNDING BOOST FOR GRASSROOTS FOOTBALL Aspiring grassroots footballers from two underrepresented groups will soon have the opportunity to play in more teams thanks to the Grow the Game programme, a £1.5m investment by The FA. Grow the Game, which is delivered by the Football Foundation and first launched back in 2010, offers grants to grassroots football clubs that wish to create new teams. This year, applications are being encouraged from clubs who want to start: • Women and girls teams • Disability teams Grow the Game grants help to reduce the costs associated with starting new grassroots football teams by making £1,500 available for each that a club creates. Expenditure that the funding can help a club pay for includes: FA coaching courses; FA league affiliation costs; referees’ fees; first aid kits; and even football kit and equipment through a bespoke voucher. The application window for Grow the Game applications is now open and closes on Thursday 29 March. Clubs seeking more information on the programme should contact their local County FA or visit the Football Foundation website. Grow the Game is inclusive of players from different genders, ethnic backgrounds, faiths, ages, sexual orientations and those with disabilities. Applications that originate from, or provide for, underrepresented communities are being encouraged. England Men’s Senior Manager and Football Foundation Ambassador, Gareth Southgate, said: “I am delighted that the Grow the Game programme is back. It means the pool of players in this country continues to widen, unearthing talent from all backgrounds in the process.”
01422 886608 or 07944 789550
Danielle Carter, England and Arsenal Women’s striker, backed the scheme: “As a footballer, one of the most rewarding things is seeing young supporters at the game and hoping that they too take up football after watching England play. I was lucky when I was a young girl as I joined Leyton Orient at the age of 10, but for many of my teammates they were playing in boys teams until they were older. It’s great that Grow the Game will mean that more girls teams will be created and give more people the chance to play and enjoy football.” Brandon Coleman, England Blind footballer, said: “By recognising areas of the game where playing opportunities are really limited, and focusing on developing them by providing funds that could make all the difference, Grow the Game plays a big part in making sure that football in England is open and accessible For All.” In addition, male teams of Under-17s-and-upwards that already exist will soon be able to apply for support from The FA’s new retention-focused scheme, called Retain the Game, which will offer £1m to successful applicants and launch in April. It will allow open-age male teams to apply for financial support to aid their continued participation in the game. Last year the Grow the Game programme supported: 2,047 new teams, 10,016 female footballers, 18,941 male footballers, 7,407 new coaching qualifications As well as Grow the Game, the Football Foundation delivers the Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund on behalf of the Premier League, The FA and the Government, through Sport England. Since 2000, the Foundation has supported over 15,000 grassroots projects worth more than £1.4bn.

ALBERT SNODGRASS
I always carry a picture of my children in my wallet. It reminds me why there’s no money in there. I was attacked last night in the street by a bloke with a power tool, there I was just minding my own business then BOSCH! My mate needed a bone marrow transplant. We found a match in Argentina. The operation was a success and our thanks go out to Diego Marrow Donor. I was drinking at the bar last night, so I took a bus home... That may not be a big deal to you, but I’ve never driven a bus before. Today I have invented a new game - Quiet tennis. It’s pretty much the same as normal tennis, but without the racket. Which spice girl can hold the most petrol? Geri can. A hot woman came up to me in a bar & said, “Do you want me to show you good time?” I said, “Yes please!!!” Then she ran 100m in 9.73 seconds. Just been to visit my mates new baby, they asked me if I wanted to wind him.. I thought that was a bit harsh so I just gave him a dead leg. I really like the name Saturn. It has a nice ring to it. So one just threw sodium chloride at me. That’s a salt.

Dancing on Ice fans will be thrilled to learn that X Factor star Jake Quickenden, Bucks Fizz legend Cheryl Baker and rugby ace Max Evans will be getting their skates on for the Dancing on Ice Live UK Tour, which stops off in Sheffield at the FlyDSA on Tuesday 27th-Thursday 29th March. This year’s tour will also feature a special guest judge, TV and West End star Denise Van Outen, who will join the ice panel hot on the heels of her judging duties on Ireland’s Got Talent. Denise, Jake, Cheryl and Max will be joining Dancing on Ice Head Judges and live tour hosts, skating legends Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, on the road this spring when the Dancing on Ice Live UK Tour skates up and down the country. Jake Quickenden has wowed both fans and the judges on the ITV show with his impressive skating which has seen him top of the leader board three times since the series began. Jake said: “This show has been such an amazing experience, so being asked to go on the live tour is awesome! I genuinely wasn’t expecting to be top of the leaderboard ever, let alone three times, so being able to go on the road to thank all those people who kept me there is such an honour.” Cheryl Baker hasn’t had such an easy time since taking to the ice, but has entertained viewers with her best efforts and quick witted responses to the judges’ comments. Cheryl said: “I love going on tour with The Fizz, so going on the road and seeing all the Dancing On Ice fans around the country is going to be so much fun! Hopefully my skating skills will have improved by then too!” Max Evans has proved he’s just as fast on the ice as the rugby pitch, impressing the TV Ice Panel with his skating week after week. Max said: “Being
asked to be on the live tour is incredible and totally unexpected, but I am thrilled to continue my skating all over the UK.” Denise Van Outen is no stranger to judging panels as the Loose Women regular is currently judging on Ireland’s Got Talent and previously judged on BBC1’s ‘I’d Do Anything’ and ‘Any Dream Will Do’. A muse for Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber, everyone’s favourite Roxy Hart in Chicago and a Strictly Come Dancing finalist, Denise knows her craft and is the perfect addition to the Dancing on Ice Live UK Tour. Denise said: “I’m so excited to be working on the Dancing on Ice Tour and cannot wait to see the skaters wow the audiences in the arenas. It’s going to be spectacular and as a fan of the show, I’m delighted to join the Ice Family!” The Dancing on Ice tour will announce further celebrities and professional skaters from the new TV series in the coming weeks.

LEGO FAN CONVENTION RETURNS TO SHEFFIELD
Ecclesfield Community Sports Centre to host the returning BlockCon LEGO show BlockCon, A LEGO Fan Convention, will be returning to Sheffield for the show’s second South Yorkshire outing at Ecclesfield School’s Community Sports Centre this February the 25th, and will feature creations by talented builders from the Sheffield LEGO User Group. Stackable Events, who are the organisers of the hugely popular Yorkshire Brick Show, held in Wakefield will be hosting the second outing of this event in Sheffield, which will be the first of the company’s events in 2017. The show is being hosted in association with Sheffield’s own LEGO User Group, Sheffield LUG. Sheffield LUG commander-in-chief, Kevin Hyatt had this to say about the event - “It's a pleasure to be able to let the people of the Sheffield City Region see great custom LEGO creations by some of the UK's best Master Builders. “There will be plenty to do and see on the day for the whole family including building pits, competitions, activities, displays, mosaic building and much, much more”. Following the success of the Channel 4 TV series, LEGO Masters, the show organisers expect the event to be very popular, with budding builders
from around the region flocking to the convention to marvel at the creations on display, and to get building tips from the Master Builders that auditioned for the show. The convention will be held on the 25th February 2018 at Ecclesfield Community Sports Centre, S35 9WD, from 10am
until 4pm. Entry is by ticket only until 1pm. Tickets for the show are available now at www. blockcon.co.uk, and we advise that you book early to avoid disappointment, as on the door tickets will be very limited on the day.

250 REASONS WHY CHANNEL 4 SHOULD MOVE TO SHEFFIELD 100 Well Known Songs
More than 50 film-makers have submitted 250 clips for a film supporting a Channel 4 move to Sheffield. The clip, voiced by actress Lois Pearson from Sheffield People’s Theatre and featuring many of the submissions, last week launched the new website www.c4sheffield. com. It features clips from many local film-makers, as well as familiar shots of Sheffield success stories The Full Monty and Jarvis Cocker and music from Sheffield’s Bring Me The Horizon. Richard Caborn, Chair of Sheffield’s Channel 4 Bid said “Bringing Channel 4 to Sheffield is a fantastic opportunity for the city and the whole of the region. “Through establishing a national screen institute in the

city to develop digital technologies we can provide a platform to do something similar in the creative and digital industries to the work we have done with the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre and Olympic Legacy Park. “This video is a great showcase of what Sheffield has to offer Channel 4 and the appetite across the city to work together to make this happen.” Councillor Mazher Iqbal, cabinet member for business and investment at SCC, said: “If Channel 4 needed any more proof that we are a city of creative innovators, then this video is it. I was thrilled to see so many people answer the call – and even if we’ve not been able to use every clip – we will be thanking them individually. “The film recognises what a colourful, diverse and creative city we are – and perfect for Channel 4 if they want to move here. We’ve got the infrastructure, digital connectivity and talent to create something very special – as this video demonstrates.” Sheffield is developing a national screen industries institute that puts it at the heart of new and emerging digital technologies, with Channel 4 expected to be a major supporter
if it chooses to move to the city. Sheffield has said that it will support the broadcaster if it wants to move some of its operation to the city, a move which could create hundreds of jobs and boost the economy by millions. The National Screen Institute, backed by the city’s two Universities, could build on the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre and Olympic Legacy Park by bringing the private and public sector together to develop world-leading digital technologies. A decision is expected later in the year. To watch the video go to www.c4sheffield.com

FIREMAN RUNNING FOR AGE UK An award-winning fire service emergency planning officer is taking on Sheffield’s biggest road race in support of the city’s leading older person’s charity. Russ Paramore, aged 56, from Chapeltown, was a latecomer to running having only taken up the sport two years ago. He’s since caught the jogging bug, competing in more than a dozen competitive road races, he hopes making his Sheffield Half Marathon debut will inspire others to pound the streets for Age UK Sheffield. Russ is based at South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue’s headquarters and last year won a global business continuity award. He said: “There are many occasions when older people in our communities do not receive appropriate support at many levels. The family unit is often not sufficient in the busy world in which we now live. Although the fire service, police and other partners do much to respond to and prevent emergency incidents, it’s clear that often older people can only get by day-to-day with the help of local communities and charities like Age UK Sheffield. I started running in July 2015 at the age of 54 and ran my first half marathon in February 2016, followed by my first full marathon in May 2016. Since then I have completed three marathons, 10 half marathons, numerous 10km and 5km races. I have never run in the Sheffield Half Marathon though, and am looking forward to taking on the challenge in my home city. I have raised more than £4,000 for children’s cancer charities through my running exploits, but wanted to ensure that I am doing
something to support older people too. I know that Age UK Sheffield supports older people in many ways at a very local level. The nights may still be long but the end of the tax year is fast approaching – so now is the ideal time to think about your pension. Some ideas: 1. Do you think you want to downsize? 2. How much is your pension worth? HELP BEAT THE WINTER BLUES When it’s cold, icy and dark outside, keeping active and engaged with family, friends and neighbours becomes a lot harder, resulting in the winter months often being difficult and lonely for elder members of our communities. It’s therefore even more important than usual in winter months for us all to look out for the older people in our lives, and make sure they are staying healthy and happy. Here are some ideas to help: 1. New and Classic Games Games are a fun way to engage memory and creativity, and maybe stir up a bit of competitive spirit! A huge range of board games are available, with varying degrees of difficulty – from classics like Backgammon, to at-home versions of TV favourites like Countdown and Catchphrase, to newcomers like the quiz game Linkee. And there are more than enough games which need nothing more than some paper, a few pens, and an active imagination. Remember “boy, girl, flower, fruit”? 2. Creating a Recipe Book Working through old recipe books is another enjoyable (and delicious!) way to stir up memories. Alternatively, if your relative or friend is famed for their culinary skills, what about suggesting they create their own cookbook to pass on to their children or grandchildren? 3. They are now all employed permanently by Amey. The eight individuals were presented with their Bronze Awards by Robert Allen, Amey Highways Business Director and Ian Hunter, Amey Apprenticeship Programme Manager, at an Amey Apprentice DofE Bronze Award Presentation celebration held at the Leopold Hotel in Sheffield on 18 January. The Award ceremony was also attended by Michelle Blackburn, Duke of Edinburgh Operations Officer, who congratulated the ambitious group on their achievements. ENTRIES NOW OPEN FOR 24HOUR RUN IN SHEFFIELD PARK A 24-hour run event is being held in Graves Park, Sheffield, this September. Scimitar Thunder Run: Steel City 24 will take place over the weekend of 1 and 2 September 2018. Hundreds of runners of all abilities will be coming to test their mettle and see how many 5km laps they can achieve in a day and a night. Councillor Mary Lea, cabinet member for culture, parks and leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “As The Outdoor City, Sheffield is becoming increasingly well known for its mix of city culture and the great outdoors. Thunder Run: Steel City 24 is a great example of how the two can come together and we’re delighted that Sheffield is the first to host a 24-hour Thunder Run in a city park. “Graves Park is one of the 30 Outdoor City Run Routes that have been launched in the city’s parks and open spaces, and is home to one of the city’s most popular Park Runs, making it an ideal location for this event. “With our Move More physical activity plan, we’re also aiming to be the most active city in the UK by 2020. We’re sure Thunder Run: Steel City 24 will be an exciting new challenge for the city’s seasoned runners – and even inspire others to get their trainers on and give running a go, too.” With categories for teams of up to eight runners (running relay-style) through to the super tough soloists, there’s a challenge suitable for pretty much every runner. The course for Steel City 24 is traffic free and all off-road and its non-technical nature makes it both fast and more inclusive. The 5km lap is contested over varied terrain including tarmac tracks and gravel paths, with the addition of some grassy stretches and woodland trails that can be found throughout the park. The engaging, undulating nature of the course and stunning, wide-reaching views will help keep the runners going out lap after lap to see how it changes as the sun goes down and then comes back up again. For the less experienced runners, the 5km lap length is ideal, allowing teams to break their chal-
lenge down into bite-sized chunks. Whereas the hardened 24hr trail runners and endurance racers get to use the fast nature of the course to see just what distance it is possible to cover in the allotted time. Every finisher is rewarded for their efforts with a quality finisher’s medal and technical running shirt designed and produced by the award-winning Scimitar Sports. Adam Church-Millward of title sponsors Scimitar Sports said: “We’re delighted to be headline sponsor for the inaugural Scimitar Thunder Run: Steel City 24 event in Sheffield. As part of our ongoing partnership, we’ll be providing high quality merchandise and medals for participants as well as a range of exciting competitions and giveaways and offers in the build-up to the event. “Our ongoing commitment to running clubs and running events is unrivalled in the UK; defined perfectly with our Men’s Running Magazine Brand of the Year award win. After supporting the Lightning Run as headline sponsor in 2017, we’re thrilled to be part of the exciting Steel City 24 event this year.” Camping from Friday through to Sunday is included in the entry fee, and competitors can even bring along their family and supporters for free to enjoy the festival atmosphere. Everything else for a great weekend’s action is set too, with facilities including live results and electronic chip timing, hot showers, flushing toilets, a team of masseurs to help keep you in top form, great catering and encouraging commentary. What’s more, there’s a whole host of activities available in the park to keep the rest of the family entertained all weekend with an animal park, two playgrounds, a boating lake and acres of fields to play in. For more information and to enter this exciting challenge please visit www.steelcity24.co.uk. You can also follow the event on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ThunderRunSteelCity24

Electro music pioneer Gary Numan has announced a major 2018 tour…with a date at the University of Sheffield’s Foundry on March 21! New album Savage: Songs From A Broken World was released in 2017 and earned the best reviews of Gary’s career. As well as entering the UK charts at No.2, he wasalso awarded the Inspiration Award for songwriting and composition at the 2017 Ivor Novello Awards. Savage: Songs From A Broken World is an album
with a narrative that’s set in an apocalyptic, post-global warming Earth in the not-toodistant future, a world with no technology left and most of the planet turned to a desolate desert wasteland. “The songs are about the things that people do in such a harsh and terrifying environment,” explains Numan. “It's about a desperate need to survive and they do awful things in order to do so, and some are haunted by what they've done. That desire to be forgiven, along with some discovered remnants of an old religious
book, ultimately encourages religion to resurface, and it really goes downhill from there.” The album was produced by long-term collaborator Ade Fenton, with recording sessions split between Numan’s own studio in LA, and in the UK. Tickets are now on sale for Gary’s date at the University of Sheffield’s Foundry - visit www.gigsandtours.com www. ticketmaster.co.uk or www. garynuman.com Foundry dates are open to the public - over 14s only.

Following a successful debut in 2004, the show has grown into a full Chinese cultural programme with local and international performances. The event is organised by an experienced Committee that consists of local community groups, Sheffield City Council,

The show takes place at Sheffield City Hall and has repeatedly attracted an audience of some 2300, including groups from many local schools. The annual evening main stage show will start at 7pm which includes traditional Chinese dance and music with glittering authentic costumes. The performance also includes the highly visual and artistic Lion Dance and professional artists visiting from China especially for the
occasion. Every year we host a professional troupe that performs traditional Chinese acrobatics as part of the programme. Performances change every year but will likely include juggling, balancing, contortionists, acrobatic ballet and Chinese face changing. February started with a bang in the County Senior League, with Saturday playing host to the League Cup Quarter-Finals, plus a healthy dose of league action. League Cup Quarter-Finals Sheffield Bankers Reserves of Division Two were the lowest ranked team in the Quarter-Finals on Saturday, as they travelled to Norton Playing Fields to take on Sheffield Medics of Division One. There was very nearly a shock on the cards, as the game was all square at 1-1 after 90 minutes, but the Medics managed to grab a Semi-Final spot with a 2-1 win after extra-time. Twice League Cup Winners Swinton Athletic also booked their place in the Semi-Finals, with a 3-1 win over AFC Dronfield at Gosforth Fields. Grimethorpe Sports were commanding 8-1 winners over Stocksbridge Park Steels Development at the Look Local Stadium. Grimethorpe will be hoping to erase the memories of their final loss to Jubilee Sports just two years ago. Premier Division Handsworth Parramore Reserves ended a run of three consecutive defeats, with a vital 5-0 home win over Millmoor Juniors. The win moves Handsworth up to 11th position, whilst Millmoor Juniors remain bottom. Fourth placed Jubilee Sports drew their third successive game, as they were held to a 3-3 draw by South Kirkby Colliery at Chaucer School.
Division One There was just one game in Division One, and it was another win for league leaders Dodoworth Miners Welfare. This time Dodworth were 4-1 winners away against Silkstone United. Dodworth have won all 14 of their league games this season and have an incredible 21 points lead atop the division. Division Two Burngreave FC maintained their eight point lead at the top of Division Two, with a 4-0 away win against Maltby Main Reserves. Warsame Hussein, Mahad Wasame, Jon Iufudu and Kassim Muhsin were all on target for the in-form Burngreave. A brace from John Mellor inspired second placed Boynton Sports to a hard-fought 4-3 win over mid-table Working Wonders at the Dorothy Hyman Stadium. New Bohemians sit just two points back in third place, after they beat Thurcroft Miners Institute 4-1 at Forge Valley School. The most entertaining game of the day, especially goal-wise, came at Muglet Lane, Manor Hotel and Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Development played out an 11 goal thriller. Goals from Dean Conway (3), Branden Hopkins (2), Ryan Smith and Rickey Tate settled the game 7-4 in Manor Hotel’s favour. A special mention must also go to Billy Smith who also scored an hat-trick in that game for Worsbrough. Caribbean Sports Reserves recorded their third consecutive victory with a big 11-1 home win over AFC Dronfield Reserves. Dylan Fletcher, Chris Lewis, Adam Rafter (2), Jahvan Sherratt, Callum Sugden and Josh Sugden (2) were all on the score-sheet for Caribbean.

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
I’ve had another difficult week, with hours on the bank in short supply after a family bereavement, and the requirement to help sort subsequent arrangements. Despite the unfortunate circumstances, once the initial shock had worn off, and family life had returned to some normality, I did manage to get a few hours on the bank… I wanted to go and try another ‘new’ water, a small venue known as Pit Pool on the Fenton and District Angling Society club card, where I’d heard of some reasonable pike being seen. A friend had asked me for some advice, stating that he was a relative newcomer to deadbait fishing, and after an exchange of messages, he was pleased to land a fine fish of 16lb 4oz; his first ever fish on deadbaits! Needless to say, I was delighted for him, and was looking forward to exploring the pool in search of similar pike myself. It was wet and windy when I arrived, so the first thing up was the umbrella, firmly anchored and pegged down, just to provide a little respite from the bitterly cold breeze which gusted across the pool. Everything else was hurriedly set out beneath the shelter, then my rods were quickly pieced together, and a simple trace attached to each. I fish very simple tactics when legering deadbaits, firmly believing that less is more, and a wide bore run ring, to which a lead is clipped, butting up against a bead protecting the trace swivel, is all that goes on. On the trebles, a fresh deadbait, often with a bit of colour or oil added, is nicked onto semi-barbed hooks, and it’s good to go; simple, but effective if the fish are there and feeding. It’s a basic set up, but it casts well, and offers hardly any resistance to a hungry pike. The only stipulation I have is to use a heavy lead to ensure it stays in place when the pike picks up the bait and isn’t dragged across the lake bed causing the predator to spit out the bait. On one rod, a plump roach, on the other, a small joey mackerel with the stomach cavity pumped full of herring oil, and both were gently lobbed out. The roach to the shadow of a floating island, the mackerel towards marginal reeds. Both were clipped into RAD Angling pike indicators, and then I huddled under the brolly as the rain started to slant across the water and the air temperature plummeted. As I’ve mentioned before I like to work the swim, moving the baits every hour

until I contact fish, but this time I didn’t have to. Within thirty minutes, the alarm guarding the roach hookbait gave a shrill squeal, and I watched the indicator climb towards the reel before falling gently away and allowing line to spill forward. I was on the rod quickly, clamping the spool, and sweeping the carbon aloft, to be met with solid resistance as the pike on the other end felt the trebles strike home! The fish that had been caught earlier by my friend had come from the peg in which I now sat, and as a dull thudding scrap ensued, I hoped it was of similar size. A couple of plodding runs were easily absorbed by my trusted (but old) Sonik SK3 xtr rod, which has a meaty three pound test curve yet forgiving tip, and the fish was steadily moved closer to my waiting net. As is often the case, when the pike spotted the mesh, it flipped off on another gill busting run, but once turned, it was beaten, and slid gracefully across the surface until enveloped and lifted onto the mat. It was a very pale pike, in keeping with the murky water from which it came, but in excellent condition, aside from a notch missing from one of the gill plates; an old wound, safely healed. Only one treble had found purchase, and it was quickly removed with a deft twist of the forceps, and safely put to the side. The pike lay glistening on the mat, and was settled enough to weigh, and quickly photograph, before it was lifted back into the margins and left to rest in my flotation sling. I use a flotation sling as it fully supports the lengthy fish as it is lifted without folding or breaking fins, and I can slide it into the water to let the predator regain its composure as it slips away. Pike are delicate fish despite a fearsome reputation and deserve to be handled with utmost care, yet it still disappoints me that some anglers are woefully ill prepared… I have no idea why, there is ample information available to ensure that any angler is properly equipped! As the weather continued to get worse, the baits were moved on the hour to new positions as I strived to tempt another fish. After six hours though, I was cold, and had had enough. A single fish was a good reward in testing conditions, and as I packed up, I messaged my friend with a picture to tell him I’d caught. “Hmm… did it have a nick on the gill plate?” I replied that it did. Unbelievably, it was the same fish he had caught less than forty eight hours earlier! It’s not the first time I’ve heard of quick recaptures for pike, indeed, I had the same fish twice in three days at another venue, but it is testament to the fact that if treated correctly, with due diligence, then pike are happy to begin feeding again soon after capture… and that, to me, is the best result of all… I’ll be back again soon, but next time I’ll try a different peg, and hopefully catch that ‘monster’ which is rumoured to reside within The Pit; wish me luck…

SEMI AJAYI FOOTBALLR FOOTBALL R UND UNDUP UP Follow Your Local Team Every Week In The Mercury HAILS WARNE DELIGHTED WITH DONS WIN RECENT DEFENSIVE SHUT-OUTS Millers Manager Paul Warne gave his thoughts to the press after seeing his side defeat Wimbledon 2-0 at the AESSEAL New York Stadium. It’s now 10 games unbeaten for Warne’s men, who defeated the Dons thanks to goals from Michael Smith and David Ball. “I’m pretty pleased,” said Warne. “I think we’ve played better but we thoroughly deserve the win. I felt we started the game really well. It took about 15 or 20 minutes before our ‘keeper touched it. So, we did start really well. We pressed, got the ball back and created chances. It’s nice to see Smudge (Michael Smith) score another goal today. I’m pleased for him and I just thought we started the game well and it sort of went a bit flat. We had a ten-minute flat spell then it picked up again before half time. “Second-half, in fairness to Wimbledon they threw the kitchen sink at us. There were throwins and corners and they were trying to get it in the box as many times as they could. It was just about getting the second goal. We got one really late. I don’t think 2-0 flattered us, we had enough chances to win comfortably but it was a difficult day at the office. “There’s some real experience in that team. They’ve been together a while as well and you can tell they all know what each other’s doing. Trotter caused us problems by going into our back-four from long balls forward. I thought they were a constant threat but they knew that. I said to the lads before the game I felt they were a better team than Portsmouth and a better team than Bradford. They’ve got a little bit of everything and I thought before the game it might be a 1-0 and it might come down to set-piece. “It’s nice for Bally because he works tireless, as does Jerry (Yates) when Jerry plays. For him to get a tap-in was good but I thought Semi is playing really well. I’m really pleased with him. The two central-halves played really well. The back four can be pleased. What gives me great delight is when we were under pressure from a
couple of corners and free-kicks, my goalkeeper comes and punches one on the edge of the box and all the back four really appreciate that.” The Millers had to re-jig the midfield after Richie Towell was deemed unfit following a knee problem, opening the door for new signing Matt Palmer to make his first Rotherham appearance. Warne hailed the impact of his new arrival, stating the competition for places is as good as it has been all season. “It just felt a good place to be today,” he added. “The fans are really starting to believe in the lads and there’s the same faces turning up every week to get in the team. Richie Towell, unfortunately, wasn’t able to play today and he’s been a big part of it. Matty Palmer steps in for him and Richie will be desperate for his place back. He injured his knee on Tuesday, had treatment Tuesday and Wednesday then trained really well Thursday. On Friday he pulled out and he’s been for a scan. We got the results back and it’s really good, he’ll probably only be out for about a week. With any luck he’ll be able to train in the latter part of next week. “There’s a lot of positives to take. Another win, another clean-sheet and I think the results went kindly for us. We’ll just keep rocking on.”
Darren Ferguson was happy to see his side grind out a point as they drew 2-2 on the road at Portsmouth. Rovers took the lead twice at Fratton Park, with James Coppinger’s effort being pegged back by Anton Walkes, before John Marquis’ header was cancelled out by Brett Pitman, but Ferguson was pleased with the way his side earned their point. “It was a strange sort of game, but any time you come here it’s always going to be tough, there’s no two ways about it, and if you can leave here without being beat then it’s always a good result,” he said. “We were outstanding early on, Copps got an early goal and we were dominant, but when they got their goal we couldn’t get a foothold in the game, in the second half we were resilient and defended them a lot better.” Rovers went back ahead through John Marquis, but the Rovers boss felt a draw was a fair result as
his players could not recreate the fluency of their dominating opening spell. “John got us back in the lead, but we couldn’t find a way to play like we did in the opening 20 minutes, we couldn’t get control though and the last period of the game where they’re down to nine men meant it would be difficult,” he added. “Any game in Portsmouth you have to dig in, they penned us in a lot and we conceded a lot of corners, but for Tom Anderson and Andy Boyle to come straight into the side, they did very well, and they’ve settled in quite comfortably.” Tickets for Rovers’ home game with Charlton Athletic on Saturday February 10 are still available. They can be purchased via the Club Doncaster Ticket Office, either by visiting in-store, calling on 01302 762576, or online at tickets.clubdoncaster.co.uk.
BOYLE FEELS PARTNERSHIP GROWING
thrown straight into the starting line-up at Fratton Park. Boyle said: “I’ve trained with the lads since Tuesday, it’s a great bunch and I’m looking forward to playing more games now. Me and Tom formed a decent partnership, and the more games we play together the more comfortable we will be. “This was a difficult place to come and we’re happy to have got a point out of the game, it’s a decent result and we were frustrated not to win it at the end, but I felt that we dealt with them comfortably at times. “I like to defend, but I also like to think that I can play out from the back and I’m quite calm and composed on the ball too, and I’m looking forward to showing everyone what I can do in the coming weeks.”
MILLERS defender Semi Ajayi has labelled his side’s recent clean sheets, as his “pride and joy”, after making it a trio of wins and shutouts in their hosting of AFC Wimbledon. Following some early season defensive deficiencies, Paul Warne’s side have recently become a tougher nut to crack - with a rejuvenated Ajayi a key component of the Millers’ new-found resolve in the defensive areas of the pitch. Ajayi admitted that he takes particular satisfaction in keeping the opposition at bay while praising his side’s ‘thou shall not pass’ mentality in recent weeks. “As a defender, clean sheets are my pride and joy,” Ajayi enthused. “Every time we pick up a clean sheet, it’s not just for the defence, it’s for the whole team. We are defending really well as a unit at the moment.” Warne has been operating with a mixture of
33
youth and experience at the heart of the Millers rearguard – with Ajayi partnering club skipper Richard Wood, who has been rewarded for his fine individual form with a contract extension until the summer of 2019. The presence of Wood has arguably brought the best out of Ajayi, who has found a new lease of life with the duo becoming fine exponents in shackling opposition strikers while proving a threat at the other end of the pitch, as Ajayi’s vital strikes against Plymouth Argyle and Walsall would testify. With Wood committing his future to the Millers despite reported interest from elsewhere, Ajayi was quick to hail the impact of his centre-half partner in the club’s recent revival of sorts. “I think we kind of complement each other,” Ajayi revealed. “I played with him a lot last season and we’ve just carried the partnership we had last season into this one. “Once the second goal went in (against Bradford), I thought we were solid enough at the back to see the win out and we managed to do that, so it’s really pleasing. “At the moment we have great momentum being 10 games unbeaten - with seven wins out of those nine games, so everything is going really well.”

BOSS PRAISES ROVERS DEBUTANTS Rovers manager Darren Ferguson was pleased with the performance of his new faces in Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Portsmouth – with three players making their Rovers debuts, and one making his first appearance of the season. The match saw debuts for defensive pair Andy Boyle and Tom Anderson, signed on loan from
Preston North End and Burnley respectively, as well as a debut for Alex Kiwomya after a long spell out with illness and a return to the side for Luke McCullough after a long-term knee injury. “It’s fantastic to see Alex and Luke come on because they’ve been out for so long, Luke is a very good player, and for Alex, what you see is what you get, and he has so much pace and looked very good and they are like two new signings as I’ve said before,” said Ferguson. “My two new centre halves did well, I had no choice but to throw them in for their debuts. They headed everything away and dealt with them, I’m getting the absolute maximum from everybody in that squad.”

UNITED SOUNDLY BEATEN BY LEAGUE LEADERS On a wet a miserable night in the midlands, the Blades were soundly beaten by the league leaders. To compound the defeat at Wolves, goalkeeper Simon Moore was sent off following a challenge outside his penalty area. Holmes started for the first time in the televised fixture, replacing Leonard, who dropped to the bench. Clarke, Stearman and Evans - all ex Wolves -
started, as did former Lane loanee Coady for the home side. Wolves started the brighter and had already gone close with a Costa volley ahead of taking the lead after five minutes. Cavaleiro was involved in the build-up but the 20-yard curler from NEVES was unstoppable, finding the top corner. In a frantic start, all the Blades could muster was Evans firing over on his return to Wolves.
Another Costa effort was deflected wide but the home side had a second goal on the half hour. Intricate passing in and around the box resulted in JOTA playing a one-two before slotting past Moore. Cavaleiro went close to a third but he mis-hit his effort ahead of United changing formation, Basham moving into midfield. Before the break, the visitors had a spell of pressure but the
only chance of note was Wilson forcing a save out of Ruddy. The first opportunity of the second half saw the home side’s Douglas curl a freekick into the Blades wall and Holmes, off balance, sliced wide for United following an Evans cross. Bonatini shot wide after a neat turn and boss Wilder searched for fresh impetus when he introduced Leonard and Donaldson. However, moments later, the game was
U23S LOSE OUT IN DERBY CLASH Ched Evans played 90 minutes, but United’s U23s were defeated by Wednesday at Bramall Lane on Monday evening. A crowd of 862 watched on as goals from Jack Stobbs and Preslav Borukov saw the Owls to victory, although another positive for the Blades was David Brooks returning to action following glandular fever. The game’s first goal came on 15 minutes as Wednesday won the ball in United’s half and STOBBS was sent through to fire past Warhurst. A few minutes later United got on the
offensive as Carruthers sent Norrington-Davies down the line and the wing-back’s cross grazed the crossbar. United almost drew level on the half hour mark as Carruthers put in an inviting ball to the back post which was met by Smith, but his header went just wide. Before the break, Evans following over at the back post from Norrington-Davies’s leftwing centre. Shortly after the interval United had their best opportunity of the night as Mallon’s strike across goal was parried by Wallis in to the path of Hallam who blasted over from close range.
A quiet period in the game had a dose of energy put into it after the hour as Smith picked up the ball in the box, turned his defender and forced a good save out of Wallis as United pressed for an equaliser. However just moments later the Owls doubled their advantage as Stobbs curled a cross

unstoppable and the Blades boss remarked: “We were beaten by the better side no doubt about it, the quality of the first goal set a marker for the evening. “We’ve got no complaints at all, they’re a quality team who have done that to others, not just us. “We stuck in there, but they had to much for us and I take my hat off to them and what they’ve got.“They’ve got some excellent players, they’ve recruited like they have and know
exactly where they’re going.” Despite the defeat though, Wilder remained bullish, adding: “People thought this would happen to us every three or four games, it’s taken until 3rd February for us to be beaten in that manner, so my players deserve some credit really. “Our heads didn’t drop because if we had, it would have been five or six. But when you are playing against that quality it is always going to be difficult, very difficult.”
Chris Wilder acknowledged his side had been beaten by a team destined for the Premier League, following Saturday’s loss against Wolves at Molineux. The hosts were simply

taken away from the Blades. From a through ball, Moore raced out of his goal to try and clear but he connected with Jota. With the Wolves striker on the deck, United’s goalkeeper was shown a straight red card. Young goalkeeper Eastwood was introduced for his Blades league debut, Wilson making way, but from the resulting free-kick CAVALEIRO’s effort
found the bottom corner, with the aid of a deflection off the wall. With the game effectively over as a contest, Wolves continued to attack. Afobe was off target with a header and Eastwood’s presence was enough to put off Bonatini. There was little for United fans to get excited about late on and after the final whistle boss Wilder admitted his side was well-beaten.

Speaking after Monday’s U23s fixture against Sheffield Wednesday at Bramall Lane, Evans admitted the boxes had been ticked in terms of his rehabilitation. He remarked: “I was a bit tired, but it was about getting the 90 minutes in really and coming
through the game with no issues. “It’s minutes in the tank and hopefully that’s enough to be considered for the first-team now, I might just have to bide my time.” Evans added: “It’s different playing in the U23s because their learning and developing their games, but it was a tough and we didn’t create a lot of chances. “The rehabilitation has gone to plan, apart from an infection postsurgery. Other than that the physios have done a great job with me and I’ve not been rushed back because of strength we have in the striking department.”

WHAT COULD GO WRONG DID GO WRONG Jos Luhukay rued an afternoon to forget as the Owls went down 3-1 to Birmingham at Hillsborough. Luhukay saw his side reduced to nine men, which made an already tough task almost impossible. Marco Matias saw red in the first half and Daniel Pudil followed suit after the break. Luhukay said: “What could go wrong for us
did go wrong today. “We lost an early goal to a mistake, a lack of communication, and then another goal to another mistake. “But these things will happen in football, players make mistakes and it is unfortunate that we made two early in the game. “Then we had Marco sent off and from where I was standing it looked a harsh decision but we must
respect the decision of the referee. “They scored again and it made things very hard but we scored through Lucas and this gave us a chance. “We might have had a penalty when Lucas was tripped and I thought it might have been inside the penalty area but it was given outside. “Then Daniel takes a second yellow card and if it is a foul
then the yellow card and red is the right decision.” He added: “We now have a week on the training ground before we play Barnsley next Saturday. “Of course, we must be better and cut out the mistakes we made today because they are uncharacteristic. “We are stronger than this normally and we must get back to this again.”
