INCLUSIVE SPORT REVOLUTION HITS DONCASTER An exciting new initiative to improve the inclusivity of sport across Doncaster so more people can get active and involved has been launched. Inclusive Revolution is a partnership between Doncaster Culture and Leisure Trust (DCLT), 4 ALL and Yorkshire Sport Foundation, which aims to create inclusive physical activity hubs across the town where
everybody can experience and enjoy sport no matter of their ability, age or if they have additional needs. Two top paraathletes - Danielle Brown MBE, GB medallist for archery and GB wheelchair basketball player Helen Freeman – attended a special event at Doncaster Dome to officially launch the initiative which welcomed schools, community groups, sports coaches and local
organisations of all ages and capabilities. They were able to take part in a variety of sport taster sessions, including football, fencing and archery, before guests heard from Danielle and Helen as well as speakers from the other organisations involved. Workshops also took place highlighting the best inclusive practices. Jon Whiteley, deputy chief executive of DCLT, said: “We
are pleased to be working in partnership with 4 All with the support of Yorkshire Sport Foundation to help make sporting activities even more accessible. The hubs, which will be based across the borough in Rossington, Adwick and our flagship site The Dome will provide opportunities for people with learning difficulties, mental health and other needs to take part and try something
new practically on their doorstep. “There can often be a number of barriers that prevent people, especially those with additional needs, from getting involved in sport and fitness activities and the aim of this programme is break down those challenges and perceptions and demonstrate how anyone and everyone can get involved.” Inclusive Revolution follows on from a
number of successful activity programmes that have already been running at three DCLT sites, Rossington Community Swimming Pool, Rossington Community Sports Village and at The Dome, specifically aimed at engaging and including people who may not have felt able to get involved in sport before. Added Jon: “This new partnership hopes to build on this work and
provide more inclusive sporting activity across Doncaster with the hope of making sport and fitness more accessible which can only be a good thing for the individuals concerned but also for Doncaster as a whole as people get more active.” Danielle Brown MBE, double Paralympic gold medallist archer and co-founder of 4 All, said: “There is no reason why everybody can’t enjoy
sport and the benefits it brings. Working alongside Yorkshire Sport Foundation and DCLT is enabling us to make a much bigger positive impact on our community and we are very excited to launch the hub initiative.” To find out more about the Inclusive revolution and to get involved, please contact James at 4ALL by emailing: 4allprogramme@ gmail.com

SHEFFIELD’S BEST BAR NONE SCHEME WINS NATIONAL AWARD Sheffield’s Best Bar None scheme has been awarded the Most Innovative Scheme at the national Best Bar None Awards. The awards, which recognise the promotion of responsible management and operation of venues which are licensed to sell alcohol, named Sheffield’s Best Bar None Champion Scheme as the most innovative scheme in the country. Sheffield’s Best Bar None Champion Scheme encourages bar staff to take a more proactive role in the scheme by becoming a BBN Champion.
BBN Champions are trained in taking a more active role in preparing a licensed venue for a Best Bar None assessment, encouraging good practice at the venue, and promoting the venue’s Best Bar None status to staff and customers. Across the UK, 75 Best Bar None schemes operate with the aim of reducing alcohol related crime and disorder, building positive relationships between licensed venues, the police and local authorities, and helping staff responsibly manage licensed premises. In Sheffield, the Best Bar
None scheme contributes to reduction in alcohol related disorder and helps to boost the city’s evening economy. Sheffield BID Police Sergeant Matt Burdett said: “So many different agencies and organisations work alongside each other to make a positive difference to Sheffield’s night-time economy, and it’s an honour to have this partnership work recognised in a national setting by the Best Bar None awards. “Our scheme has been running in Sheffield for several years now, with the shared commitment of making our night-time
/THEMERCURYNEWSPAPER
economy a safe and enjoyable place for all who wish to enjoy the diverse range of nightlife on offer. “Winning this award is a fantastic achievement for the city and we look forward to building upon this success into 2018 and beyond to make Sheffield’s scheme even better.” The scheme is run by Sheffield Drug and Alcohol/Domestic Abuse Coordination Team (DACT) with sponsorship from specialist solicitors John Gaunt and Partners, Charnwood Training, Gosh Promo, South Yorkshire Police, and
Sheffield Business Improvement District (BID). Councillor Mary Lea, cabinet member for culture, sport and leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “We’re delighted to have received this award which comes so soon after the city retained its Purple Flag status. “We are all working together to improve and build upon Sheffield’s reputation as a warm, friendly and safe place to be. This is a great achievement and shows the strength of the partnership we have in the city.”

SHEFFIELD SMOKERS SOUGHT FOR PHOTOSHOOT A campaign to reduce tobacco use in Sheffield is searching for local smokers, ex-smokers and current quitters to feature in a photoshoot that will be used in marketing materials to promote Smokefree Sheffield and the campaigns. Smokefree Sheffield, set up by Sheffield City Council and its partners, wants to find adults who have been diagnosed with smoking-related conditions including COPD, heart disease, asthma, infertility, diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis. It would also like to invite those who have also suffered with smoking-related tooth loss, blindness, cataracts or the loss of tastebuds, to become involved in the development of our new branding materials. Greg Fell, Director of Public Health at Sheffield City Council, said: “Smokefree Sheffield is keen to highlight the wide range of health conditions caused or exacerbated by smoking that people often do not think about. Conditions which often have a big impact on quality of life, for the rest of their lives." Cllr Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure, said “We are hoping to hear from local people who want to help us in our mission to reduce smoking in our city by telling the next generation their stories.”
01422 886608 or 07944 789550
“By taking part, you will be helping to encourage others to try quitting and doing your bit to reach a Smokefree Sheffield.” The one-day photoshoot is expected to take place within the next three weeks at a location in central Sheffield. The final photos will be used for the campaign, likely in posters, digital adverts and on the new Smokefree Sheffield website. To take part in the campaign, please email natalie@divacreative.com or call 0114 221 0378 and express your interest.

The Magnificent Seven cycle race will have a new base when it returns to Sheffield for the third time on Sunday 11 March. The event will start and finish in Bradfield – a picturesque Peak District village which sits within the Sheffield boundary just seven miles outside of the city centre – to allow more entries and more space for parking. The race is one of four headline events of The Outdoor City Weekender, running at locations across Sheffield from 9 to 11 March 2018. A cross between a sportive and a hill climb, the Magnificent Seven will see 130 cyclists – that’s 30 more than last year – battle up seven of Sheffield’s toughest ascents. The 2018 route, which is slightly more than 26 miles long, presents each rider with over 4,200ft of climbing and inclines ranging from 9 to 23 per cent. The race begins at 8.30am and takes in Mill Lee Road and Hoar Stones Road, Hagg Hill, Blake Street, Fern Road and Thrush Street, Birch House Avenue and Birks Wood Drive, Back Lane, and the infamous Cote de Bradfield. This final climb challenged the world-class Tour de France riders at the Yorkshire Grand Depart in 2014 and provides spectacular views over Sheffield from its summit. Event organiser Marc Etches said: “We are really pleased to be part of The Outdoor City Weekender and are looking forward to showcasing our great city once more with the Magnificent Seven. “Last year’s event was superb and we’re increasing the entries from 100 to 130 for 2018 to meet demand. “The event is unique in the UK and gives the competitors the opportunity to race up traffic-free closed roads, for which we thank Sheffield City Council. “Professional riders are usually the only ones who get to ride on closed roads so this is a great selling point for the event, as evidenced by the veteran’s category selling out on the first day, which was amazing. “We are really looking forward to seeing the support
from local residents, especially the crowds on Hagg Hill, Blake Street and the Thrush Street cobbles. This support is fantastic for the event and much appreciated by organisers and riders alike. “The route really showcases Sheffield as The Outdoor City and the riders will be treated to some spectacular views at the top of every climb, especially the highlight of this year’s route – the Cote de Bradfield.” Cyclists will ride with motorbike escorts and lead cars between each of the seven hills, and then gather at the bottom of each of the hills – which will be closed for the event – before racing for points to the summit. The first 15 to the top then receive points which count towards the grand prize of being crowned King or Queen of the Mountains, for which the winners receive a trophy. The ride is aimed at amateur club riders and, as well as capturing the imagination of local clubs, attracts cyclists from across the country to take up the seven hill challenge. Both men and women over 16 are encouraged to ride with equal prize money for both categories and there’s also a prize for the over 40s, as the fastest veterans are awarded separate points and prizes. The veteran category, which sold out in less than nine hours, sees some new riders stepping up for the first time. James Allen from Sheffrec Cycling Club is a firm favourite, and Simon Warren who finished 3rd last year, as well as newcomers Simon Froberg and Olly Humphreys, will be giving everyone a run for their money. All entrants will receive refreshments before and afterwards, and each rider will also receive a free cycling cap for their efforts. Cow bells will again be handed out to spectators along the route to help cheer the riders along the tough climbs.

REPORTING ANTI-SOCIAL ISSUES On 1st February, there were important changes to the way Sheffield residents report antisocial behaviour issues. TALBOT
SHEFFIELD’S YOUNGER PEOPLE - A GENERATION TO BE PROUD OF! Sometimes we can all be guilty of forgetting what our younger generation can offer to the people of Sheffield - but this week we have received two items - an article on Sheffield’s Young Carers and a letter from a younger reader - that should give us all food for thought! The letter is from Shona Rooney, a Yr 11 pupil at Outwood Academy City
Dear Sir/ Madam Young people have suffered stereotyping, discrimination and unjust comments just because of their age, for many years, whether this is in the workplace, online or just in the middle of the street. I personally believe that this is completely unfair and has to stop. One of the many ways in which the youth of today are treated poorly, is when it comes to work. Not only is it hard for 16+ year olds to find work, but once they have a job, the discrimination does not stop there. Employers are required to pay young people average minimum wage at least, if they are working up to standard and the required hours. However many businesses refuse to even pay this. Companies often treat young people unfairly just due to their, age and do not believe that they deserve equal pay to workers who are older and possibly more experienced. This happens even when working equal shifts or equal hours to the older employee. Unfortunately this is just a small part of the discrimination that we young people experience daily. ‘Emos’, ‘Goths’ and ‘Chavs’ are just some of the names that ‘youths’ are called by not only older generations, but also by fellow young people too. This, on most occasions, is solely because of the way that they dress. This makes many young people feel as though they cannot dress the way that they feel most comfortable, confident and free. There have been numerous incidents globally where names, such as ‘Chav’ are used as insults. This may be to bully the person or make them feel uncomfortable. People often feel the need to make fun of the way that people dress just because they disagree with their style or may even be jealous of it. Younger generations mainly do this to make their insecurities hidden. However the older generations often hold a negative view on the people that dress this way based on stereotypes from when they were younger. This often leads to such fashions being associated with criminal, violent or threatening behavior, therefore instantly create a negative image of them. To me this is completely unfair and unacceptable. There is an assumption, mainly made by older generations, that because young people ‘hang around’ in groups, that they are intent on no good. Of course the majority of the time this is completely untrue. In fact they are passing their time or catching up with friends. This is actually due to the lack of facilities and Youth Clubs for them to meet up. This in turn is due to the government cutting funding to local councils. People presume that because a group, which may not necessarily be large, are walking around the streets, they are dangerous and the public should be concerned. I believe that this is unfair as it very rarely true. Although all of the above reasons are enough to show you that young people are treated poorly, I believe that the minimum voting age being eighteen, is the worst way young people are discriminated against. Young people are not seen to have important voices, and many people do not believe that people below the age of eighteen are capable of making a vote based on informed choices. In fact, including myself, many young people are very passionate about politics and would love to get their voices heard by their communities, and possibly even by parliament. Making the minimum voting age eighteen prevents this from happening and actually discourages them from getting involved in politics at young age. I strongly believe that the minimum voting age should be lowered as this will allow young people to have a say in the decisions that are made about their own futures. It is unfair that young people cannot even have a say in decisions that may impact their adult lives, and that older generations can. In summary I would really appreciate it if you could print my letter, so that the voices and opinions of the youth can be considered and listened to, and hopefully some beneficial changes can be made.

50 YEARS OF YES The year 2018 marks half a century since the formation of the legendary group YES, one of the biggest bands in progrock history and true pioneers of the genre. To celebrate this remarkable milestone YES will embark on a 10-date UK tour next March - #YES50, calling in at Sheffield City Hall on Wednesday 14th March. On this not-to-be-missed tour, YES [Steve Howe, Alan White, Geoff Downes, Jon Davison and Billy Sherwood] will feature not only many of the band’s classic hits but performances of sides 1 and 4 and an excerpt from Side 3 of their 1973 album Tales from Topographic Oceans, which was the first Yes album to top the UK album charts. YES will also play some European shows. Watch this space for more dates. The final weekend of the UK tour at the London Palladium on 24th and 25th March will include a 50th Anniversary fan convention – more details of the anniversary celebrations will be announced soon. Roger Dean (whose fantastical landscapes have become synonymous with the band’s albums) will unveil new “Close To The Edge” paintings at the Palladium on March 25th. YES, deservedly inducted into the Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame in April 2017, will release “Topographic Drama – Live Across America”, a new live album, planned for later in the year, recorded during their US 2016/17 tours. Talking about their 50th
Anniversary, Steve Howe said, “We want to mark this anniversary with a tour that encompasses some of our best loved work - we want to play things we enjoy, maybe songs we haven’t done in a while.” Geoff Downes adds “I feel enormously privileged be a part of the legacy of the incredible and unique line of musicians in YES. The band has always remained fresh and inventive throughout its 50-year history, and created an amazing catalogue of music that has inspired millions from all generations." Alan White says "Reflecting on
the past 46 years that I've devoted my life to playing Yes music, it's been an interesting journey and a true labour of love. I've always believed in the power of music and the band's recent induction to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and our Grammy awarded in 1985 are testament to the longevity of influence our music has had through the years. I'm extremely grateful to continue to be performing on stages for our dedicated fans and look forward to our 50th Anniversary performing together in 2018. It's been a great ride!!"

WIN TICKETS TO SEE TOP TV COMEDIAN ED BYRNE Ed returns to the road this year after a total sell-out Edinburgh Fringe run with his biggest ever tour to date and his brand new show called Spoiler Alert, calling in at Sheffield City Hall on Friday 2nd March. He says; “I originally intended to call the show “I’ll Millennial You in a Minute”, but my promoter considered the title “off-puttingly baffling”. That’s my own chainsaw in the photo, by the way”. In the show, Ed explores the thin line between righteous complaining and brat-like whining and asks, ‘are we right to be fed up, or are we spoiled?’ Come and watch as Byrne takes this question, turns it upside down and shakes it until the funny falls out. Go on, spoil yourself.
Recognized as one of the finest observational comics in the industry, Ed’s television credits are countless (provided you’re really bad at counting); Mock The Week, Have I Got News For You, The Graham Norton Show, Live At The Apollo, The One Show, Comic Relief Bake Off 2015, The World’s Most Dangerous Roads and, most recently, he and Dara O Briain filmed the follow up to their Big Adventure show for BBC2 entitled Dara and Ed’s Road to Mandalay. Ed Byrne Sheffield City Hall Friday 2nd March Tickets available from 0114 2782789 or via sheffieldcityhall. co.uk To be in with a chance of winning a pair of tickets to see Ed live at Sheffield City Hall just answer the following question and send your entry along with a contact phone number to info@ mercurynewspaper.co.uk before Monday 26th February. TRAMLINES ANNOUNCES BIGGEST EVER LINE-UP FOR 2018 The highly anticipated 10th edition of Tramlines Festival boasts its biggest, broadest and best line-up of musical talent yet for the new location on Hillsborough Park from Friday 20th – Sunday 22nd July 2018. Household names from the worlds of indie, rock and roll, garage, rap, pop and hip hop are among the first announcement, including headliners: Stereophonics, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds and Craig David’s TS5, plus Blossoms, De La Soul, Jake Bugg, Reverend And The Makers, Stefflon Don, The Sherlocks, Mabel, The Magic Gang, Coasts, Pale Waves, Gengahr, Naaz, Mullally, and Stereo Honey. Tramlines’ new home – licenced up to 40,000 people - features four different stages, a wider than ever before range of entertainment including pop-up cinema, comedy lineup, special treats from Sheffield’s local breweries, a kids and family area and much more. It remains one of the best-value for money city festivals anywhere in
the country, with weekend tickets now costing £59 plus booking fee and available from www. tramlines.org.uk. Evolving and growing each year, the 10th instalment of Tramlines will be the most impressive yet, not least because of the new location in Hillsborough Park, but having the space to roll out extra entertainment that makes it as all-encompassing as any traditional, greenfield festival. The new site includes four stages with one hosted by iconic local venue the Leadmill and curated on the Sunday by ‘The Reverend’ Jon McClure, an all new Library Stage offering contemporary live performances from a variety of emerging talent, and a bigger than ever Into The Trees area with a wealth of kids and family friendly entertainment throughout the day and a plethora of party DJs by evening. Remaining true to its initial vision of being as musically diverse as possible, the 10th
Tramlines does so once more by mixing emerging heroes with internationally celebrated acts from a wide range of genres. Friday’s headliners, Stereophonics, with a reputation as one of the best live bands from Great Britain are still riding high off the success of their latest album, Scream Above the Sounds. Current single Taken A Tumble finds the band in fine form and guaranteed to be a highlight of the festival. Saturday is headlined by ex-Oasis man Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, a band who continue to fly the flag for British rock and roll around the world with smart songwriting and huge hooks. Sunday, meanwhile, sees the everpopular Craig David’s TS5 headline. Akin to a live dubplate clash complete with Craig David on the decks as well as the Master Of Ceremonies with his speed-rapping skills, it’s a performance not to be missed. Other acts featured in the first announcement
include Manchester rockers, Blossoms, mixing up indie, synth pop, alt and psychedelic rock with their thrilling live show, and flower-power hip-hop legends, De La Soul, who are still one of the most influential groups in the scene more than 20 years after first emerging. Add in the retro-soul stylings of chart topper Jake Bugg, local lad turned global star Reverend And The Makers, and the witty lyrics of rapper Stefflon Don, and the Tramlines Festival lineup so far is looking sharp indeed. Ever providing a platform for tomorrow’s musical stars, the 2018 lineup includes local South Yorkshire fourpiece The Sherlocks, singer Mabel – daughter of Neneh Cherry and Massive Attack record producer Cameron McVey – NME favourites The Magic Gang, quirk-pop soloist Naaz, pop soul youngster Mullally, plus plenty of rock and indie from Pale Waves, Coasts, Gengahr and Stereo Honey. Tramlines will open its site earlier than previous years,

Week 24 of the County Senior League was played in the backdrop of the wet and cold British winter weather, but 13 games still got the go-ahead, plus a midweek League Cup Quarter-Final. League Cup Quarter-Final Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves booked their place in the League Cup Semi-Finals midweek, with a 5-4 penalty shoot-out victory over Premier Division leaders AFC Penistone Church Reserves. The score was 2-2 after extra-time. Stocksbridge will play Sheffield Medics at the Memorial Ground on March 20th in the Semi-Finals. The other semifinal will be contested between Swinton Athletic and Grimethorpe Sports at the same venue on March 15th. Premier Division AFC Penistone Church Reserves were unable to put their League Cup Quarter-Final loss fully behind them, as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Denaby United. Penistone still lead the way in the Premier Division. Frecheville extended their unbeaten league run to 11 matches with a 4-0 win over Houghton Main at Davy Sports Club. Frecheville climb to second place with the victory, just a point behind Penistone, but have played two games more. Division One Another week and another win for league leaders Dodworth Miners Welfare, who this week beat Hepworth United 2-1 at home. It has been an incredible campaign thus far for Dodworth; 15 wins from 15 games played and a plus 42 goal difference to boot. Kiveton Park ended a three game losing streak, with an impressive 3-1 win over third placed Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915. Kiveton sit just below
mid-table, but have played only 10 games, winning half of them. League Cup Semi-Finalists Sheffield Medics were 2-1 winners over Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves at the Yorkshire NU Build Stadium. Connor Campbell scored the only goal at the Phoenix Sports Club, where Silkstone United claimed a 1-0 away win over Brinsworth Whitehill. Division Two It was goals galore in Division Two, with 54 goals in the seven games that took place on Saturday. League leaders Burngreave FC were held to a 3-3 draw at home against New Bohemians. The draw brings to an end Burngreave’s nine game winning streak. Burngreave will not be too disappointed though, as second placed Bonyton Sports slipped to a 4-2 defeat at home to Manor Hotel. Jordan Thomas, James Green, Shaun Brown and Ryan Hicks were all on target for Manor Hotel. Four goals from Aaron Williamson inspired Caribbean Sports Reserves to an enthralling 9-4 away win over Sheffield Bankers Reserves. Mehtaab Khan, Mitchell Osborne (2), Josh Sugden and Callum Douglas were also on the score-sheet for Caribbean, who only last week scored 11. There was another thriller at Swinton Miners Welfare, where Swinton Athletic Reserves beat Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Development 8-3. Swinton move into third position with the three points. Maltby Main Reserves put behind them a run of two games without a goal, with a 5-2 win over Thurcroft Miners Institute at Muglet Lane. North Gawber Colliery Reserves were held to a 3-3 draw by Working Winders at Woolley Miners Welfare. Not to be outdone, there was another 3-3 draw at Gosforth Playing Fields between AFC Dronfield Reserves and Wombwell Main Development.

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
As family issues have taken over this week, time on the bank has been limited again to just a few hours, snatched between appointments with various people in the funereal and church businesses. Despite that, I still managed to get out on the bank, and this week, I’ve had a couple of new toys to play with! Over the last twelve months, I’ve really enjoyed more and more time exploring urban waterways in search of predators, with light lure gear. It really has been a revelation just how much fun it is, especially with friends, and the best part is, it’s extremely easy to get into, and you only need a bare minimum of kit. In fact, much of what you need will fit in your pocket, so there is no need to lug around heavy bags, or any other bulky equipment… it really is that simple! Of course, as with any angling discipline, there are dozens of ‘internet experts’ who will tell you exactly what you MUST do to achieve their level of ‘success’ but listen to this; you don’t have to conform! You can do what you want, fish where you want, when you want, and for what you want! See, I told you it was an attractive alternative to sitting in the rain, waiting for your alarm to sound! It’s fun fishing, checking out unlikely holes and tiny hideaways, with a few surprises thrown in… above all, it’s EASY to start! Don’t misunderstand me. There are several high profile anglers who are exceptionally good at lure fishing, and have shared that knowledge via the medium of Youtube, which means that you and I can more or less take them with us to the bank, and tap into the vast reservoir of knowledge that some of these guys have got. As a result, light lure fishing is an extremely accessible, reasonably priced sector and fun section of our hobby, and one which I have come to fall back on when a quick fix is needed. A couple of short rods, a tub of rubber lures, and a few jigheads, hooks and weights, and that’s about it. I keep a small bag with everything I need in the van, so I can just pick up a rod, and go and enjoy a couple of hours on a canal, river, or whatever, wherever I happen to be. Brilliant! So, my new toys? I’ve taken delivery of a pair of Sonik Sports lure rods. The first is a four piece Magna travel rod, complete with hard tube, which when broken down fits snugly inside my suitcase! It’s seven feet long, rated for lures between 2-18g, and is definitely coming with me to Australia later in the year; see, I told you light lure fishing was a ‘go anywhere’ option! The second is a rod I’ve been looking forward to for a few months having seen them last year at a Sonik trade show. The Magna dropshot rod is an upgrade on the Sonik Light-Tec range which I’ve been using for the last two years. Designed to be used with lures between 2-8g, it will cover most of the waters I fish, and is superbly priced at just £49.99! Twin it with a small reel, (I use the Sonik AVX 3000 series) and you have a superb lightweight kit for around £100! I’m not going to bang on the specifications, (although they are impressive, believe me) as like

most anglers, I just need to know that it will do what ‘it says on the tin’, so I’ve used both this week. The problem hasn’t been the kit, it’s been finding the fish, which have been very reluctant to feed in changeable weather conditions…but you have to try! My first trip out, with the four piece travel spin rod, was to Rudyard Lake in Staffordshire. I got in the van, drove the short ten minute journey to the lake, pulled on to the car park, and then turned round and went elsewhere…frozen solid! The canal was the same, so my only option was to drop into a couple of swims on the tiny River Churnet and hope for a fish or two. I know that there are two swims, both less than thirty yards long, and around ten yards wide, where it is possible to slide through the undergrowth, and flick a lure out to see what resides within, where five minutes is usually enough to trigger a strike if the fish are hungry. The first swim, the tail of a deep pool, was explored with a small rubber shad, attached via a wire trace, just in case one of the resident pike attacked. A couple of casts saw no action, but I did note a small pike follow the lure back under my feet… but it wouldn’t take it! I moved on to the next pool, slid and scrabbled my way to the water’s edge, bouncing between saplings, until I slithered to a halt at the head of the run. The lure was dropped under a tree root on the far side and allowed to swing around in the current… nothing. A second cast to the near margin, the lure slipping under a raft of flotsam saw no result, as did a third cast into the faster water… all to no avail. A tree restricted my backcast, so the lure was wound all the way to the rod tip and flicked downstream to bounce off the surface and skitter to a halt some yards further on. I let it sink, then started a slow, jerky retrieve… WHAM! I’d obviously hit the right spot as the lure was hit almost immediately, and the fish turned into the fast water in an attempt to escape. The Magna held it easily, and a lithe, out of season wild trout came to the net within a few seconds; my first fish on the new rod! As trout are currently out of season, it was returned quickly, and I opted to leave lest I catch any more… The Magna dropshot rod got an outing too. It feels a little stiffer than the Light-Tec which preceded it, yet still sensitive enough to register any ‘wasp’ which took an interest in my tiny lure. A wander up a short stretch of the canal resulted in my first few small perch, and none of them bounced off or were missed, so it was a pleasing start. I then travelled once more to Rudyard, where a biting, blustery wind gusted across the surface, and made control of my thin braid tricky. Nonetheless, a few drops into fifteen feet of water saw a few more perch lifted from the depths, and again, I hadn’t missed any positive bites. After an hour of standing in a freezing wind, it was time to leave, but I was pleased to hook plenty of fish to around eight ounces when all around had nought, and it was a positive result for another new rod. I’ve yet to put a ‘lump’ through either rod, but I don’t expect that it will cause any undue alarm when I do. For the last few seasons, I’ve used a Sonik SK4 lure rod for my heavier work, and, as mentioned, the Light-Tec for smaller fish, and they have always performed admirably. The Magna range are an upgrade on both, come in at a great price point, and I’m really looking forward to getting a lot more use out of them… I’ll keep you informed, but meanwhile, check them out at www.soniksports.com

BOSS PLEASED WITH IMPRESSIVE WIN
Fans and opposition alike will have stood back and taken notice of the Millers’ highenergy style which has helped them embark upon their incredible 11 game unbeaten run, but boss Paul Warne has backed his players’ fitness by insisting he won’t be forced into making changes ahead of Tuesday night’s game with Oxford United. The Millers have adopted an industrious, pressing approach to their football this season and have reaped the benefits of a gruelling pre-season training camp in Austria, with last gasp victories over the likes of Portsmouth serving as evidence of their fitness. Following another energetic display which saw the Millers triumph over Scunthorpe at the weekend, Warne insists he doesn’t feel the need to freshen up his side, despite admitting he has a number of players more than capable waiting in the wings. “If it needs to be done, we will. I’ve got no problem with it because we’ve got a great squad but hopefully that won’t be the case,” he told www.themillers.co.uk. “I think I only freshen things up when if there’s a need, or it looks a little bit stale, which I don’t believe it does at the moment. I think the lads deserve to keep their shirts with the way they are playing but if it does look a little bit stale, I’ll freshen it up. “Alternatively, if someone is carrying something which is a little bit unnecessary, then I’ll change it as well. There’s a couple of lads who are a little bit sore, but I’ve said before that you’re going to be sore playing a lot of games but you don’t want

MILLERS boss Paul Warne was quick to hail his side’s clinical display after they secured an eye-catching 2-1 victory at promotion rivals Scunthorpe United in an enthralling encounter at Glanford Park. Goals either side of the break from Joe Newell and Semi Ajayi earned the Millers their fourth win on the spin, at the expense of Graham Alexander’s side and stretch their unbeaten run to 11 games in the process. Speaking to assembled press corps afterwards, Warne was full of praise for his side’s efforts in North Lincolnshire. “I was really pleased, obviously. I thought it was a really good game with two really in-form teams,” Warne stated. “I knew if we could get in and around Scunthorpe and compete against them then we are taking good strides forward. We are happy with how we played. “There were not many chances in the first-half, although not through a lack of effort from either team. “We took our chance well and in the secondhalf, we more than matched them. We were the stronger side in the second half and on another day, we might have scored more. I was disappointed with the goal we gave away but
apart from that I don’t think our ‘keeper had much to do.” Following Newell’s first-half opener, Ajayi looked to have given Warne’s men some muchneeded breathing space in the second half, with a well-taken header but sub Lee Novak put the game back in the balance, almost immediately. Despite the Millers having to weather eight minutes of second half stoppage time and Duane Holmes squandering a gilt-edged chance for the hosts – the Millers army of over two thousand fans made the short hop back to South Yorkshire in jubilant mood - to the delight of the Millers chief, who praised his side’s defensive display. “Our subs came on and changed the game. I want my lads to run and scrap for the shirt. The subs had a positive impact.” Warne enthused. “We tweaked a couple of things at half time. We couldn’t always press because of the way they play, they can pick you off in the middle. I knew they would come at us. I thought we started the game really well. They put pressure on us after we scored, but we absorbed it well. We defended really well. We weathered the storm and kept breaking away. With the pace, energy and enthusiasm of our team, we are always going to cause problems.”

to be out the team, so you have to grit your teeth and get on with it.” Warne has once again praised the players currently on the fringes of the starting 11 after a superb substitutes’ showing from Ryan Williams ensured the Millers made it over the line in the encounter with the Iron on Saturday, while taking time to explain why new signing Matt Palmer had to settle for a spot on the bench following the return of Richie Towell. “I explained to Matty why I left him out, but Richie and Will have been playing really well together in there. Matty will be a big part of what we’re doing in the future weeks and months and years hopefully,” he continued. “I just think it’s going to take him a little bit longer for him to know what we want from our players and Richie and Will deserve their shirts.” There could also be more competition to come in the middle of the park, after the experienced Darren Potter set foot on the training pitches for the first time after sustaining an injury before the turn of the year. “He ran on the grass today and it’s the first time that I’ve seen him properly open his legs which is nice. I’m hopeful that he might train with the squad next week.”

FERGUSON PRAISES ROVERS RESILIENCE Darren Ferguson was pleased with his side’s resilience, as Rovers battled to a 1-1 draw with Charlton Athletic in Sky Bet League One. Matty Blair’s 94th minute equaliser saw Rovers grab a hard-earned point at home, and Ferguson was delighted to see his side grind out another good result. “Credit must go to the players because they kept going, it’s a good habit to have, getting something out of a game, Matty Blair has popped up in the last minute and it shows great character for the players to not know that they’re beat,” he said. “It was pleasing that we got the late goal, Tom Anderson’s tackle at 1-0 was crucial, and credit to Matty for being in the right place at the right time, but it’s a let off because we haven’t been as good today. “You often get games like that where it hasn’t been our best performance, but we’ve still managed to get something out of the game, and
you have to be happy with that considering how much of the game went.” Saturday’s draw was the first of three games in eight days, with Rovers travelling to Walsall on Tuesday night, with Ferguson eager to see Rovers get their first win of 2018. “We’re not doing badly, we’ve only lost four of the last 22, but we are drawing too many games, so we need better performances because that will then bring better results and help us climb up that table,” he added. “We need to get through this week and pick up as many points as we can, after this period there’s only a dozen games left and you’re at the business end, and the players know that they have a lot of hard work to put in. “You have to keep going and keep practising, we’ve kept going today and got something out of the game, but it’s important that we get back to winning ways on Tuesday, it’s as simple as that.”
ANDERSON PLEASED WITH POINT
away from Rovers. He said: “It was my man for their goal so I hold my hands up for that, there was still a long time left in the game so I had to stay focused and try to do well. “I made the block in the second half, Ian Lawlor delayed the player and fortunately that gave me enough time to get back and get my body in the way. “It’s a good point for us in the end, we weren’t at our best but the fact we’ve still managed to get something from it says a lot about the team.” Anderson felt the fighting spirit within the squad meant that Rovers were always capable of getting something from the game late on. He added: “Scoring the late goal means the

CAPTAIN DESERVES ALL THE PRAISE
Chris Wilder heaped praise on his skipper, following Saturday’s success over Leeds United at Bramall Lane. Billy Sharp scored a goal in each half, including a spectacular volley to open the scoring in the second minute and despite PierreMichel Lasogga drawing Leeds level, the Blades were good value for the victory. Speaking in the aftermath of the win, Wilder remarked: “We got over the line which I’m delighted
about. “It’s been a difficult time because our performances of late haven’t seen us pick up the rewards we deserved, so to edge a tight Yorkshire derby is fantastic.” Of his skipper, Wilder added: “It’s not the easiest situation to be in when you’re not in the team, especially when you’re captain but he’s held his head high. “He’s worked extremely hard and been a great captain for me in the dressing room and around the
training ground.“We picked it early, I told him getting off the bus last Saturday that he’d start today and he’s been excellent throughout the week, capping it off with two goals and a man of the match performance. “I won’t allow players to moan and scream, they won’t pull out of challenges or think individually, I want team players and Billy is certainly that. “He has been brilliant and deserves all the credit that will come his way.”
CLUB STATEMENT His Royal Highness Prince Abdullah Bin Mosa’ad Abdulaziz Al Saud (the Prince) and Kevin McCabe are in discussions regarding the transfer of ownership and control and Sheffield United Football Club to the Prince. Chris Wilder had to do something to put the brakes on Sheffield United’s poor run of form. He found the solution against Leeds, referring back to a similar formula that has allowed United to be so successful in the last 18 months. The Blades had notched up two victories in their previous 13 matches before the Leeds United fixture, hardly promotion form. The ghastly run began following the Burton Albion success, where an impressive away performance was ruined due to the injury that Paul
Coutts suffered. The Blades boss tinkered with his line-up in the months that followed to try and sustain a play-off push, but to no avail. The starting eleven against Leeds was very familiar to Blades fans. Mark Duffy returned following a period out of the team. He was excellent at helping United create chances, he looked a threat all afternoon. He and Fleck were back together again in midfield and the performance of the pair repaid Wilder’s faith. Billy Sharp, who was linked with moves away from the Lane in January, was

also reintroduced to the starting line-up. We all know what happened next. Within two minutes he was running away in celebration in front of the away support. A winning penalty followed in a man of the match performance. It was reported after the game that Wilder had informed Sharp that he would be starting against our Yorkshire rivals following the defeat to Wolves. Sharp had plenty of time to prepare and delivered in style against his former club. The win puts United back in touching distance of 6th place with 15 games to go.

For Nuhiu, the key thing now is to stick together and fight hard for every point, starting on Tuesday when the Owls host Derby at Hillsborough. “It was one point we got out of this derby and overall maybe it was a fair point for both,” he said of Saturday’s clash with the Reds. “Sometimes when you are in these kind of situations, not everything goes your way but the most important is we are all together. “The players we have available are sticking together and fighting for each other. “After the game against
Birmingham last week, the Barnsley game was the first step. “Obviously it is tough right now, if you look at the bench there were three players from the Under-23s but the positive for them is that they are getting the opportunities. “We have good players here, I have trust in all of them and the manager does also. “I didn’t see one player hide, the fans could see we were trying. This season, everything isn’t going our way but this happens in football.” Next up is a clash against the high-flying Rams, who occupy second spot
in the Championship but Nuhiu welcomes the opportunity to face one of the form sides in the division. He added: “Now we play at home where we have another three points to challenge for and another positive performance to make. “I always look forward to the games and I try to help the team and give my best all the time. “I won’t hide from anything, you need to take your opportunities to score in these difficult situations. “The new manager has given me confidence, he believes in me and I try to repay that but not just to him, but to the team.”

The 27-year-old played the first hour and scored what proved a consolation goal in the clash at the Terriers’ PPG Canalside training complex. “It was important for Tom to get 60 minutes under his belt as he has been out for a long time,” Thompson said. “He came through okay. Tom is a terrific professional and he approached the game in the manner that we expected.” On the game, he added: “It was a bit scrappy and the windy conditions dictated that. “We were missing a lot of players in Jack Stobbs, Sean Clare, Connor Kirby and Jordan Thorniley, who have been training with the first team. “We had a lot of young
scholars playing so it was a tough baptism. “We got back into the game with Tom’s goal and were on the front foot in the second half. “But we conceded a sloppy third goal but the lads kept going and did not shirk away from the task.”
