UEFA AND FA LAUNCH SCHOOLS TICKET INITIATIVE FOR EUROPEAN U17S CHAMPIONSHIPS UEFA and The Football Association have launched its schools ticket initiative ahead of the European Under17s Championship in May. England will host the UEFA European Under-17 Championship for the first time this summer, with five of the 31 matches to be played at Rotherham United’s
New York Stadium, including the final. The tournament final draw will take place at St. George’s Park on 5 April. England, who won the European Under-17 title in 2010 and 2014 and also finished runners-up to Spain in 2017, have qualified automatically for the tournament as hosts. The tournament will be played between
Friday 4 May and Sunday 20 May, across 10 match days at six venues: Rotherham United, Chesterfield, Burton Albion, Walsall, St. George’s Park and Loughborough University. The UEFA and FA ticketing campaign is aimed at attracting local school children to the matches. School friendly early

CAMPAIGN FOR A SMOKEFREE SHEFFIELD LAUNCHED A new campaign has been launched to reduce tobacco use in Sheffield. Set up to help smokers, non-smokers, quitters and the whole community work towards a future without tobacco, Smokefree Sheffield brings the city’s tobacco control board and local services together under one umbrella. It has launched a new website – www. smokefreesheffield. org – where users can find out more about these partner
organisations and the support, advice and services they provide, including stop smoking support and how we crack down on cheap and illicit tobacco sales in Sheffield’s communities. Greg Fell, Director of Public Health at Sheffield City Council, said: “We are passionate about achieving a future where no-one can remember the last time they knew someone who started smoking.. We are determined to reduce the harm caused by smoking
in Sheffield. Children become hooked on cigarettes from a young age and develop lifelong habits. Our goal is to ensure this is a thing of the past.” Cllr Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure said, “Making this exciting vision a reality is something that will need to involve not just current smokers and quitters but also people who have never used tobacco before at all. Everyone can play a part in reaching a Smokefree Sheffield and a healthier, happier

city that sets a great example for future generations.” The Smokefree Sheffield website was designed and built by Workstation-based marketing agency Diva Creative, which has also joined the council’s tobacco control board as a partner and is helping to recommend behaviour change approaches with the best chance of lowering smoking levels amongst those groups of people who smoke the most. Smokefree Sheffield’s
three-year plan also includes campaigns aimed at tackling public perceptions of the use of e-cigarettes. E–cigarettes are a significantly safer alternative to smoking cigarettes. Sheffield City Council are advising smokers who can not or don’t want to stop smoking, to completely switch to vaping. SHEFFIELD BID LAUNCHES BID SPRING CLEAN TO TACKLE SHEFFIELD’S GRAFFITI

On Friday 2 March, Sheffield Business Improvement District (BID) will launch the BID Spring Clean, an annual campaign that tackles graffiti and mess in Sheffield city centre. During the BID Spring Clean, which is now in its third year, Sheffield BID’s Clean Team will remove graffiti from privately owned, commercial properties at no cost to the owners or occupiers, in a bid to make Sheffield city centre a cleaner place to live, work and play in. The BID Spring Clean will launch with a day of cleaning led by the BID’s Street Rangers, who undertake an early morning cleaning service for levy payers affected by the waste and mess left by rough

sleepers and late-night revellers. They will be joined by teams of ‘guest rangers’, made up of volunteers from businesses within Sheffield city centre, which support the BID’s commitment to making Sheffield city centre cleaner. Diane Jarvis, Sheffield BID manager, said: “Making Sheffield city centre cleaner is one of the BID’s five core objectives. By removing unwelcome graffiti, we hope to make Sheffield a more attractive place to spend time and show our best side to the city’s visitors. “Throughout the campaign, the BID is offering our Clean Team’s graffiti removal service to privately owned, commercial property, free of charge. We hope that those businesses that are eligible take advantage of our service, to make Sheffield city centre cleaner for all.” Whilst the BID’s Clean Team continues to offer a free graffiti removal service to its levy payers throughout the year, the BID Spring Clean is an annual initiative which will actively target city centre grot spots with a purge on graffiti affecting all commercial properties in the BID area. Tom Holmes, Head of Branch at John Lewis, said: “We regularly use Sheffield BID’s Clean Team to have graffiti removed from the outside of our store. The Clean Team is professional, efficient and provides a vital service that helps keep the exterior of John Lewis Sheffield clean. Not only for our
customers, but for all shoppers in the city centre. “We urge other businesses to take advantage of this fantastic service during the BID Spring Clean, to help clean up Sheffield city centre and make it a place we can all be proud of.” As well as graffiti removal, the BID provides security and lighting reviews, subsidised anti-graffiti coatings and organise crime prevention visits through the BID-funded police sergeant Matthew Burdett, to help prevent graffiti in the city centre. To tackle areas that are consistently retagged, the BID can deploy high-tech mobile cameras for surveillance, and details of all graffiti reported to the BID are provided to South Yorkshire Police to assist future prosecutions. The BID also seeks permanent permissions from landlords so that graffiti can be removed quickly. This year, the BID Spring Clean event runs alongside Keep Britain Tidy’s Great British Spring Clean, which runs from 2 – 4 March. The BID has teamed up with Wilko, a Healthy High Streets partner, to provide the kit for our guest rangers at the BID Spring Clean’s launch event on 2 March. Landlords and tenants of private commercial properties in the city centre affected by graffiti, can add these to the BID Spring Clean schedule, free of charge, by emailing cleanteam@sheffieldbid.com. If you would like to volunteer to help clean up Sheffield on 2 March, email enquiries@sheffieldbid.com.

YOUR CHANCE TO VOLUNTEER IN SHEFFIELD On Thursday 1 March, the Town Hall is the place to be for potential volunteers in Sheffield. This year there will be over 50 charities, looking for volunteers to support them in the invaluable work they do, and the Fair will run from 10 am. to 4 pm. The Volunteering Fair is a great day for people to find out more about volunteering, which roles might be right for them and to meet like-minded people interested in giving back. As well as being a great way to make a worthwhile difference within the community, volunteering can be a way for people to share their skills or learn new skills, gain relevant experience for work or study, or pursue hobbies and interests. Charities at the Fair will include organisations working; with animals, in arts and heritage, environment, health and social care, recovery, housing, community
FIND MOBILITY & COMFORT WITH CUSTOM SHOES MADE IN THE PEAK DISTRICT Based near the picturesque village of Hope in the Derbyshire Peak District, The Cordwainer is one of the UK's most experienced orthopaedic shoemakers. Over the years the company has helped hundreds of people find mobility and comfort which does not come at the expense of style and good looks. The company is owned by Philip Taylor who’s been making orthopaedic shoes since he was eleven years of age so has a lifetime’s experience. He moved the business to Brough, Bradwell back in 2010 to be nearer family roots and now attracts clients from across the Yorkshire region. Philip is helped by a team of enthusiastic apprentices that will ensure the business is ready for the future, and to deal with the increasing number of clients he has introduced 3D feet measuring technology and invested in new sewing and stitching machines. In a time when other companies are fighting to stay afloat, The Cordwainer has already seen orders rise by 30% over the past three years alone. Philip puts this partially down to his disabled customers consider their footwear

An increasing number of clients are being referred to The Cordwainer by hospitals and CCG’s (Clinical Commissioning Groups) enabling NHS clients to receive the footwear they need, although this is at the discretion of the clinic concerned. Those hospitals have been able to save money as they see the client given the correct footwear rather than constant visits to the hospital for alterations and remakes of footwear. The Cordwainer’s motto is ‘Mobility and style – the choice is yours’ and is the perfect fit for anyone with a disability and complex foot issues.

Wedding Guide 10
WINTER WEDDING TIPS Full sleeved frocks are bang on trend for 2018. Laced vintage style sleeves are a particularly popular style at the moment. Complement your wedding dress with a fabulous white fur wrap or a feathered bolero. Or, if you really feel the cold why not make a bold statement with a bright red winter coat, or a contrasting velvet jacket? When choosing your wedding shoes, opt for something enclosed; peep toes won’t cut it in the snow! Alternatively, if you’re not brave enough to sport heels in frosty conditions, there are some beautiful wedding boots on the market which are both practical and elegant. Draping yourself in diamonds will ensure you sparkle and shine on your big day. Think delicate tiaras and cascading
earrings. And don’t forget your bridesmaids. Fur muffs are a fantastic accessory. Not only will they keep your bridesmaids' hands warm, they will also work really well with the winter wonderland theme. Whatever you choose, a winter wedding is a fantastic opportunity to experiment with luxurious fabrics such as white velvet and faux fur. Sparkling jewels, silvers and gold really complement this theme too. When organising a winter wedding remember to pick your venue carefully; try not to choose a room with too many windows, as a drafty room will make for unhappy guests! Check that the venue will have adequate heating, as no-one can predict winter temperatures. An ideal winter wedding venue will feature roaring
open fires and seasonal decorations. Celebrate the festive period with floral arrangements made up of reds and greens, or in-season flowers such as tulips or roses. Pillar candles, and twinkling lights are also lovely, and silver, gold, and white are perfect colour schemes to complement your winter wedding ideas. Greet your guests with a warming drink when they arrive, such as mulled wine or hot chocolate, and provide blankets in accordance with your colour theme; it's a special touch that will be appreciated by your guests on a cold day! Remember, a winter wedding can be charming and elegant, despite the risk of freezing temperatures and snowy conditions. Embrace the wintry theme and enjoy your day whatever the weather!

SHEFFIELD WELCOMES UK’S LONGEST-RUNNING FOLK FESTIVAL Sheffield welcomes UK’s longest-running folk festival for record ninth time. Folk lovers from across the country will descend on Sheffield this weekend (23-25 Feb) for the 2018 Inter Varsity Folk Dance Festival (IVFDF). Organised by the Ceilidh Society (CeilidhSoc) at the University of Sheffield, the festival will feature a packed programme of music sessions, ceilidhs, workshops, and performances by hundreds of morris dancers from around the country. IVFDF was first held in Leeds in 1951 and is now the longest running folk festival in the UK. Each year a different university folk society hosts the festival, with Sheffield first playing host in 1953. This year will be the ninth time Sheffield has welcomed IVFDF - more than any other city. The festival usually attracts around 1000 people, many of them students, but events are open to everyone. Highlights of this year’s festival include high-energy ceilidhs from folk outfits the Melrose Quintet and Steamchicken, workshops covering everything from morris dancing to ‘Playford’ (a 17th Century style of music and dance), and even a techno morris dance performance. Christopher Fish, who is chairing the organising committee for this year’s festival, said: “Sheffield has a long history of hosting IVFDF, which is not surprising given the folk heritage the city has, with sessions, gigs and various types of dancing
happening almost every night of the week. IVFDF is a great way for people to have a go at a whole range of folk activities at a fraction of a cost of some of the bigger summer festivals. We’re really excited to once again be welcoming folk fans to Sheffield and want to encourage anyone with an interest in folk to come and experience the festival.” On the Saturday of the festival Sheffield will come alive with the sound of thousands of bells and clashing sticks, as morris teams from as far as Brighton, Bristol and Glasgow entertain crowds at various city centre locations. The day of dance is being organised by Five Rivers Morris of Sheffield, and will feature 14 teams from both the local area and across the country. James Merrylees, squire of Five
Rivers Morris, said: “We’re thrilled that IVFDF is back in Sheffield and to be helping to give folk fans a great weekend in our city. We’ve got a wealth of great morris teams here in Sheffield - more than anywhere else in the country - so we really can claim to be the city of morris. Audiences here are really receptive, making for a brilliant atmosphere, which we’re sure our visiting teams will love.” For the full IVFDF programme and tickets visit https://ivfdf-2018. ceilidhsoc.org For times and details of the morris tour search “IVFDF Sheffield 2018 Morris Tour” on Facebook or follow Five Rivers Morris on Twitter.

OLD VIOLINS WANTED THOR AND BLAZE ROCK THE EMBASSY FOR ANNIVERSARY BASH NEEDS TO BE 14 INCH BODY In 2014, the local music scene was a very different place. The era of the band’s putting on a show was a thing of the past, jeans and black tee shirts were the norm and one bands set list was the same as the next. Then, on Valentine’s Day, with a flash of lightning and a thunderous sound of drums, Sheffield rockers, THOR-GODS OF ROCK arrived on the scene to bring a fresh but familiar outlook back to the local scene. 4 years on, on Saturday 17th February, Thor-Gods Of Rock celebrated their 4th anniversary with a sold out show at The Embassy, Sheffield. They were joined by fellow Sheffield rockers, the increasingly popular, Blaze, and what a show it was. We spoke to Thor front man, Lee Dodge about the event. “It was an amazing night. Really hard work, but absolutely worth it. Blaze were great to work with. Mark (Mark White, Blaze lead singer) and the guys were the perfect band to open the show. They did a fantastic job. We’d have
been happy to sit back and watch them all night but it seemed some of the crowd wanted to see us perform too!” The event was sold out a month before the event with tickets being sold by each band and directly from the venue. Lee explained, “It went crazy just after Christmas. My phone was going crazy everyday with people wanting tickets. Even my mum couldn’t get them! It was a really hectic time for the band. We’d just welcomed John (John Hardman, guitar) and Scott (Scott Jordan, Bass) into the band so spending a lot of time in rehearsal, it was Christmas, I was rehearsing with Kev (former Thor guitarist, Kevin Hill) for a New Years Eve show and we were inundated with request for posting, delivering and saving tickets. On top of that, we all work Monday to Friday. Some days I met myself coming back. For a few weeks, Sarah (Lee’s wife and the Thor’s lighting technician) forgot who I was.”
But, was it all worth it? Was the hard work and long days worth it? Did the effort pay off? Lee told us, “absolutely! We couldn’t have asked for better”. And there was added meaning to the occasion for the 6’4” tall singer. “Yeah, it’s my birthday on 20th February so, with the show being on the closest Saturday to that, it was kind of like a birthday party for mr personally too.” The doors at The Embassy opened at 7pm but it seemed that the capacity crowd were wanting to get in early as Lee explains, “The queue started to build at about 6pm. By 7pm, it was halfway up the road to the pub next door. It made us feel like, just for one night, we were real rock stars!” The occasion was, however, tinged with sadness when the Landlady of the venue tragically passed away. Lee told us “Karen was a lovely woman. It was a real shock when we heard the news that she’d died. The show was in doubt for a short time but we
had a meeting with the venue and decided to go ahead with the show in honour of all of the hard work that Karen had put in herself. The Embassy have been fantastic from start to finish. They were well and truly onboard with the event from the get-go.” As well as the venue, it seems that the success of the show was also due, in no small part, to the Thor entourage. Lee explained “We’re extremely fortunate to have a great little team. Although there’s only 3 of them, they never seem to tire! We just like to that Claire (Claire Mantle)

As well as the club scene, Thor-Gods Of Rock will be visiting Peak Cavern, Castleton in August to
play at “The Devil’s Arse” as well as a trip into Europe to perform in Istria, Croatia in October. Lee went on to say “it’s going to be an exciting time. DRIVERS REJECT PLANS TO EXTEND MOT-FREE PERIOD FOR NEW CARS
fined up to £1,000 for driving a vehicle without a valid MOT. All the focus of week 25 in the County Senior was back on league action with 17 league games planned for last Saturday. Premier Division The title race is hotting-up in the Premier Division, with just 10 points separating the top eight. AFC Penistone Church Reserves still lead the way, after they beat the aforementioned eighth placed team, South Kirkby Colliery 9-2 at the Memorial Ground. Frecheville are just a point further back, after they beat sixth placed Jubilee Sports 3-2 at Chaucer School. Goals from Jordan Cooper, Joseph Littlewood and Ryan McDonald gave Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves a 3-0 home win over Wombwell Main. Stocksbridge are up to third position, just five points off the lead, with a three games spare. A brace from Matthew Thornton inspired North Gawber Colliery to a 5-1 win over Houghton Main at the M-Tec Stadium. Matt Blakey, Luke Marsden and Scott Chipchase were also on target for North Gawber who move into fourth place. Grimethorpe Sports, who led the way for much of the autumn and winter have dropped to fifth place, after they fell to their third consecutive league loss; a 2-1 home defeat to Handsworth Parramore Reserves. Swinton Athletic made it eight straight wins in all competitions, with a 5-2 home win over Denaby Main. Swinton sit in seventh place, but are one to keep an eye on as they have played fewer games than all of their rivals. Division One Dodworth Miners Welfare moved one step closer to the Division One title, as they fought hard for
a 4-3 away win against League Cup SemiFinalists Sheffield Medics. Dodworth have won all 16 of their league games, and their efficiency is evidenced by four of their six wins in 2018 coming by just the one goal. Second placed High Green Villa claimed a 5-2 win over Kiveton Park at St George’s Park, Thorncliffe. Sadly for High Green they trail the leaders by 24 points, whilst they only have eight games to play. A double from Joseph Martini helped Stocksbridge Park Steels Development to a 4-3 home win over fourth placed Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915. The three points are vital for Stocksbridge, who sit second bottom, but are only a point behind Caribbean Sports. Caribbean lost on Satirday, as they fell 3-1at Gosforth Playing Fields against third place AFC Dronfield. Mid-table Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves ended a run of six league games without a win, as they beat Silkstone United 3-2 away from home. Division Two Burngreave FC hit seven for the third time at home in a month, with a 7-2 victory over Manor Hotel. The win takes Burngreave 10 points clear, as previously second placed Boynton Sports lost 1-0 at Muglet Lane against Maltby Main Reserves. The day was to get worse for Boynton, as New Bohemians leapfrogged them following a comprehensive 5-1 home win against AFC Dronfield Reserves. Caribbean Sports Reserve moved into fifth place, following their fifth consecutive win, a 3-1 win over Thurcroft Miners Institute at the Thurcroft Hub. Working Wonders are just a point further behind in sixth, after they beat Sheffield Bankers Reserves 5-3 at home. Goals from Adam Crouch (2), Thomas Cutts and Luke Needham gave Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Development an impressive 4-1 away win against North Gawber Colliery Reserves.

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
Spring is definitely on the way, and although I love winter fishing, I enjoy feeling the warmth of the sun even more, so I was glad to be on the banks this week as subtle signs herald the approach of warmer weather… I chose to fish a reservoir on the club card of Stoke-on-Trent Angling Society, a windswept body of water also known as Stanley Pool, high up in the Moorlands, and home to some nice pike, which were my target for the day. Sunrise was estimated for 7.27am by the forecaster, so I was pleasantly surprised to find it light when I went out to the van at 7am to scrape off the preceding nights frost and scrabbled frenziedly lest someone got to my intended spot first! The drive down to the water is always a treat, and by the time I’d covered the few hundred yards from the gate, I’d already spotted cock pheasants strutting by the track, several rabbits bounding through the verges, and watched a buzzard set off for its first foray into the growing light. It’s a beautiful spot, surrounded by farm and woodland, and it was into the woods I wandered, intending to fish the small pool, so called because of the causeway which separates it from the main body of the lake. I’ve never fished this area before, but after listening to advice from club officials, I decided to spend a day under the trees to see if I could catch. As I approached the peg, I could see it had been recently fished, the grass tramped flat, and a couple of holes indicated where banksticks had been sited, showing that two rods had been in use; a pike angler like me probably. This particular swim has a stream bed running across it, and most baits are flung into the channel where the pike often lay quietly, ready to ambush prey fish as they are silhouetted above, so my first couple of baits were dropped in hopefully, and I set about tidying up my gear. Both bobbins hung gently from my lines, and I took a few minutes to enjoy the sunrise through the trees, and marvel at the reflections on the mirror-like water… I hoped the weather would hold, although rain had been promised… I travel fairly light when pike fishing, using only a brolly instead of a shelter or bivvy; I can carry everything else in one go, so can move quickly if required. As I was the only angler on the lake however, and in such a beautiful spot, I intended to stay whether I caught or not, so pegged down the umbrella, unfolded the chair, and pulled out the flask, intent on watching the wildlife around me, whilst I enjoyed a brew. After an hour, I was approached by a gentleman I know well, my former science teacher at Middle School, and a chap I have much to be thankful for as an angler. When I was aged just 13 years old, he took me fishing as part of a school trip, and inspired my love for the outdoors and angling,

so it is always a pleasure to see Geoff on the bank. He told me that the week previously, he had taken five fish from the spot I now occupied, including a hairy double run, but none of the big fish for which the water is renowned. We enjoyed a brief chat, before he departed for the opposite of the pool… no doubt to watch and see if I could remember what he had taught me! I’d bought a selection of baits, including lamprey, joey mackerel, my favoured roach, and a couple of herring, and my initial cast had been with the roach, and mackerel. I’m a keen advocate of boosting baits, so my roach had been liberally dosed with Spotted Fin Salmon Oil, and the mackerel with blood drawn from the pouch of lamprey after they had thawed. Lamprey are absolutely full of blood, which is what makes them one of the best baits around, and once thawed, the blood pools at the bottom of the bag, and a syringe can be used to remove some before injecting it into another bait. It’s perhaps a bit gruesome but can often pinch a bite when times are hard, and is a handy tip for tough sessions. After a few hours, the wind was really starting to cause a few issues, and I had to turn my umbrella completely around, and anchor it to a tree. The gusts whipped fiercely at the edges of the brolly; at times, I was concerned that it would be torn from the ground, and as I looked out into the main area of the reservoir, I was surprised to see another umbrella, beneath which an angler huddled, holding on gamely as white caps whipped across the surface of the lake! At least I had some shelter behind a line of trees, but he was struggling in gusts estimated at up to seventy miles an hour! Unsurprisingly, as soon as he got chance between squalls, he packed up at light speed, and departed, but it wasn’t comfortable where I was either… As I hunkered down with a book, I heard Geoff shout, and watched him land a nice pike before returning it safely. I hadn’t had a bite, and on a water where I’ve yet to blank, I was getting a little concerned that I’d made an error and picked the wrong spot. I stuck it out. Geoff packed up and went home, waving as he disappeared, and as the wind finally dropped, I could take in a little more of the surrounding beauty. As the sun started to sink, I recast my rods, and as I adjusted the bobbin, heard a deep, low, growl from close by… I looked up, and found myself staring into the glowering eyes, and slavering fangs of a huge, dishevelled wolfhound which stood about three feet away! I hadn’t seen it approach me through the woods, nor did it appear to have an owner, so I squatted motionless as it continued to growl at me… I sat for what seemed an age, until I heard a shout, and the dog turned its head. I looked up hoping to see it bound away but could only see what is best described as an extra from the film ‘Deliverance’, standing watching me from behind a tree, complete with checkered shirt, dungarees, and felling axe as the dog held station! As if things couldn’t get worse! I had no intention of ‘squealing like a pig’, so reached out (slowly) for a lump of nearby timber, ready to beat myself to death first if required… Thankfully, a further shout got the beasts attention, and it slunk off into the woods. The interloper said not a word to me, but instead stalked off after the dog, swinging his axe, whilst watching me as he increased the distance between us. It was an uncanny encounter, which certainly unnerved me, and when my alarm emitted a high pitched squeak, I had to check it hadn’t come from me! It hadn’t. The bobbin jumped off the line, which slowly spooled away as a fish made off with the roach deadbait. I wound down, and struck into solid resistance, bringing a scraper double figure fish to the net quickly. It hadn’t had time to engulf the roach, which hung limply from it’s jaws, and the hooks were removed swiftly without injury to the pike. It was quickly photographed and left in the net to recover, before it swam away into the gathering gloom. That was enough for me, my run of fish continued, so I packed up, keeping a watchful eye on the woods… I was sure I could hear distant music… a banjo maybe? I hope not, it was a nice spot, but next time I’ll take a friend…

MILLERS OFFER ‘FINAL FIVE’ MATCH Follow Your Local Team Every Week In The Mercury PACKAGE FOR SEASON RUN-IN
WARNE PLEASED WITH VICTORY Millers chief Paul Warne believes that his side’s eye-catching victory at table-topping Shrewsbury Town will make their League One rivals sit up and take notice. Richard Wood’s first-half strike proved the difference in Shropshire as Warne’s side held firm to notch their sixth successive victory and consolidate their position in the League One play-off berths. Speaking to the assembled press corps, Warne was full of praise for his side’s ability to dig out a result against Paul Hurst’s high-flyers on a difficult New Meadow playing surface. “It was a difficult game,” Warne admitted. “It was a hard game and the pitch wasn’t amazing and was not good for football for either team. It became a game of corners, throw-ins and hard work really and I thought on chances created we edged the game. “We started really well and in the first 15 minutes we were really good but Shrewsbury, top of the league, came back at us but we weathered their storm. In the second half, we really pressed for the second goal, which would have made my life at the side of the pitch much easier but to win one-nil is obviously very pleasing.” With the Millers stretching their unbeaten run to 13 games following the victory, Warne was quick to hail the character of his side, who have gone
from mid-table obscurity to knocking on the door of the automatic promotion places, following their impressive run of form of late. “The lads have a real belief in themselves,” Warne added. “We are on a fantastic run at the moment but we just go onto the next game, and so on. The lads have amazing belief as a group. They are a really close group. I’m lucky as the moment as it’s very difficult to pick the 18. I’m really pleased with what they are doing on the pitch and they deserve all the plaudits.” A delighted Warne admitted that he would share a post-match drink with his Shrewsbury counterpart and Rotherham playing legend, Paul Hurst and the Millers boss had kind words for the hosts, who are leading the League One pack. “Shrewsbury have done really well this year and I obviously know Hursty really well,” Warne added. “What they have and will achieve is pretty amazing so for us to come away from home and keep a clean sheet makes us very proud. “I thought we were a constant threat on the goal and on another day we may have scored more. We had chances. I had no issues with the players missing them as long as they keep putting themselves in the situation. “When you are on top away from home you have to score and going up 1-0 at half time did not flatter us at all.”
Rotherham United are pleased to announce an exciting ‘Final Five’ offer for Millers fans ahead of what promises to be a thrilling end to the Sky Bet League One season. The club are offering savings of up £20 off matchday prices for the final five home games of the season when purchasing in a one off transaction. FERGUSON PLEASED WITH REPSONSE Darren Ferguson felt his side showed the perfect response after beating Fleetwood Town 3-0 in Sky Bet League One. Two goals from Tom Anderson, along with Alex Kiwomya’s first strike for the club gave Rovers a comfortable win, and their first three points of 2018. He said: “It was a very dominant performance, we got three goals and a clean sheet so it was a good day all round and I’m delighted for my players. “I said after the Walsall game that we wanted to make sure that performance was a one off, that has to be the case and we looked a different side when we played the way we can. “It was an important game to win, we looked at it as a good opportunity to get our first win of the year. We’ve had a lot of draws and we had to start turning them into wins.” Ferguson made five changes from the team that
were beaten at Walsall on Tuesday night, and felt the players that came in did a solid job. He added: “I had to make some tough decisions in the build-up to the game, I think the ones that were left out were in need of a break from the spotlight. “The players that came in did very very well, Ian Lawlor has played non-stop for the past 18 months and Marko Marosi came in and did a good job with what he had to do. “That was the case with the other players I took out, some have hit a bit of a bad spell of form but that happens, our back five were very good.” Rovers return to the Keepmoat Stadium to face Bury on Saturday March 3. you can purchase tickets from the Club Doncaster Box Office, on 01302 762576 or at tickets.clubdoncaster.co.uk.
KIWOMYA WANTS MORE
I know how to move across the pitch and I’ve done a lot of work in different positions and it’s worked out well. “There are good players here who know what they’re doing, and I want to add to that, I can add pace, and now that I’ve got a goal under my belt I just want to kick on, I’m not far off full games and I’m putting my all into training.” The win saw Rovers earn their first three points of 2018, and Kiwomya felt that they were good value for their win. “Everything went to plan, it was what we had worked on all week, we executed the game plan well and that has shown in the result today, we had a look in the mirror, dealt with it and that’s shown today,” he added. “We know that with our defence, we can do our job down one end and that they can do theirs down the other, there’s great team cohesion here,
Alex Kiwomya is looking to kick on following his first goal for the club against Fleetwood Town on Saturday. Kiwomya’s 13th minute strike set Rovers on their way to a 3-0 win over the Cod Army, and he was delighted to get off the mark. “It’s been a long time coming, it’s been a long road, but I’m happy to help the team out with a goal, John Marquis managed to work it down the left and it made it easy for me to score,” he said. “This goal will help me kick on, it shows that I’ve got it in the locker and I’m ready to score again,

and we have shown we have the right mentality to bounce back. “Hopefully we can start a run now, the lads thrive off big experiences and games, and that starts again next week, but we take things a game at a time and go from there, we can show that the
performances are there.” Rovers return to the Keepmoat Stadium to face Bury on Saturday March 3. you can purchase tickets from the Club Doncaster Box Office, on 01302 762576 or at tickets.clubdoncaster.co.uk

WILDER PROUD OF PLAYERS
The Blades boss wasn’t too downhearted at following a narrow defeat to Premier League Leicester. Chris Wilder was understandably proud of his players following Friday’s narrow loss at the King Power Stadium. But the Blades boss was also disappointed to exit the Emirates FA Cup at the fifth-round stage, having put up a good showing against a fully strength Foxes side, that
included the likes of Riyad Mahrez and matchwinner Jamie Vardy. Speaking in the aftermath of the tie, the Blades boss remarked: “We gave a good account of ourselves, we remain disciplined and stayed in the game right until the end against quality opposition. “It was different to a Championship game, we had to get in behind the ball and plug holes. We were structured
and organised, we worked hard and we pushed them. “When we saw they were playing a full hit we knew how the game would go, we couldn’t match them up and play our normal game. “They are in a different situation, they’re not going to win the Premier League or get into the top four, so their priority is the FA Cup and as seen by their team they were going all out to win.” Wilder added: “It
was a tight game, games aren’t won on teamsheets or in the dressing room and I said to the players that if Leicester were to beat us they would have to go through us all and they did, we put up a really good show and when it’s a tight game you have to take your chances to score. “We’ve not taken three or four good opportunities and they took one of theirs in great fashion.”
BLADES RUN FOXES CLOSE BASHAM BACKING BLADES United pushed 2016 Premier League champions Leicester City all the way in the Emirates FA Cup tie at the King Power Stadium on Friday evening. But unfortunately for the Blades, the combination of Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy proved the difference, with the latter heading home in the second-half to settle the last 16 tie in the Foxes favour. For the fifth-round clash against the 2015/16 Premier League Champions, boss Wilder made several changes. Wright, Carruthers, Lundstram, Lafferty, Donaldson and Wilson were all handed starts, with Ched Evans and Brooks named amongst the substitutes that also included Sharp, Duffy and Stearman. Clarke missed out through illness and Fleck because of suspension. United enjoyed the best of the opening exchanges, Wilson forced an early corner, before testing Schmeichel at his near post. At the other end, Wright made a timely block to deny Vardy at the expense of corner from Ndidi’s through ball. The England international came even closer moments later, firing inches wide of
Blackman’s far post. City were now enjoying the majority of possession and Blackman had to be alert to deny Ndidi from 25 yards. Wright was again well positioned to make a block, this tim from Iheanacho, after a marauding run from Chilwell. In response, their was some panic in the City box from Carruthers’ corner, but Maguire cleared with Wilson ready to pounce. Then the former Blade needed to make a last-ditch block to deny Stevens after Simpson failed to clear. On 35 minutes, the Blades had a big let off, Mahrez played Vardy in on goal, but Blackman stood tall to deny Leicester’s number nine. Mahrez was again influential, before Chilwell crossed and Iheanacho deflected the ball wide from closerange, but that was the last action of note in the first period. At the break, Brooks replaced Wilson, who had earlier received treatment, following a clash with Maguire. The beginning of the second period saw little action of note, although Brooks nearly got the better of Maguire on a counter attack. But in the 66th minute
the Foxes produced a touch of quality to take the lead. Mahrez worked spaced on the right-wing and floated a cross to the back post where VARDY had peeled off Basham to loop a head back across goal into the far corner. Leicester were now on top and only an excellent save low to his left from Blackman denied Gray adding a second. On 71 minutes, the Blades were so close to restoring parity. Lafferty played a ball behind the Leicester defence and it fell inviting for Baldock to fire an effort goalwards, only for Schmeichel to get down in the nick of time and parry wide. In United’s next attack, Carruthers volleyed just off target from a Stevens cross. Back at the other end, Vardy thought he had got his second after Mahrez had head across goal from Chilwell’s cross, only for the assistant referee to rule it out for offside. With the clock the enemy, United pressed forward in numbers, but Schmeichel was Leicester’s calming influence and despite the best efforts of the travelling supporters to galvanise the players it proved in vain.

The versatile Blade insists United won’t take a backwards step in their pursuit of a play-off place. Chris Basham insists the Blades won’t take a backwards step in their pursuit of a play-off place. Speaking ahead of QPR’s visit to Bramall Lane, United’s number six remarked: “We need to take it a game at a time and look to win every game, hopefully we’ll amass enough points in the final 15 matches. “It’s an exciting time for the players, the fans and everyone connected to the club, we couldn’t have wished to have been in this position and we’re determined to
finish the job.” And Basham is optimistic about the Blades chances of making the top six, adding: “We’ve been in these big game situations in League One, we relish the pressure they bring. PROUD OF THE PLAYERS Jos Luhukay praised his players following the 0-0 draw with Premier League Swansea in the fifth round of the FA
Cup on Saturday. The depleted Owls gave as good as they got against the Swans and must now do battle
in South Wales on Tuesday week in the replay. Luhukay said: “I am very proud of the

players today. We have a small squad who can play and they gave everything for each other and the fans. “We were up against a Premier League team but there was not much difference out there. We played very good football and so did Swansea in the second half so I think a draw was a fair result.” A replay was hardly a priority for both sides but Luhukay insists he will take the situation into his stride as he seeks a passage into the FA Cup quarter finals, aligned to continued

Championship improvement. He added: “We have a very busy period now with six games in 18 days. But this is football and I would rather have another game in the replay than lose to Swansea today. “We have injuries and also Jordan Rhodes cannot play today because of sickness.
He was on his way to the stadium today but the doctor said he must turn around and rest at home. “We must do what the schedule dictates we must do. Right now we are still in the cup, we are doing better in the Championship and we have lost one game in ten overall, so we have a lot of positives.”
BELIEF IN OUR WORK Nine games into his tenure as Owls boss, Jos Luhukay believes his side are heading in a positive direction. From those nine games, Wednesday have posted six clean sheets, advanced to the fifth round of the FA Cup and registered their maiden league victory under Jos against Derby at Hillsborough last week. Following on from the goalless draw with Swansea in the fifth round of the FA Cup last weekend, the Owls head to Millwall this evening and the manager said: “I think we are in a very good direction, with the team and with the players and we are enjoying it. “We are giving our best every day and we are seeing the players’ intensive work in the games. “The mentality and character is very high and also the discipline.” But with a hectic fixture schedule in the Championship, combined with an FA Cup replay away
at Swansea on the horizon, Jos has plenty to consider in terms of team selection. “We must look to the intensity and the physical situation of every player,” he told swfc.co.uk. “We look at the last games, how many minutes, how long each player plays and keep a close eye on that. “We have a very intensive programme, in the FA Cup and Championship. “Millwall is next, Saturday Aston Villa, then Swansea, then Bristol City so we have a lot of work ahead. “But we look only to the next game and then we must have a very good regeneration for the next game to Aston Villa.”

STARS ARE ALIGNED FOR CITY CENTRE DUAL SLALOM MTB RACE
Street in Sheffield city centre. It brings Sheffield’s thriving mountain biking scene out of the woods and into the heart of the city. It is one of four headline events at The Outdoor City Weekender, an action-packed adventure festival taking place at locations across Sheffield from 9 to 11 March 2018. The event is being held later in the day than last year – from around 4pm to 7pm – making the final After the success of the rounds even more dramatic as inaugural Howard Street Dual darkness falls and the course is last year, the dual slalom race lit up. will once again challenge the Entry to the competition is by stars of the UK mountain bike invitation only, with around 64 scene when it comes to the city men and women taking to the track centre on Saturday 10 March. on the day. Riders will race two at a time from the top of Hallam Square, across the front of Sheffield Hallam University’s main building and down to the bottom of Howard Street. Along the way they’ll negotiate a series of obstacles, from man-made constructions and street furniture to flat grass corners and custom wooden features. It’s a knockout-style event so the fastest two riders of the day will then take each other on in the grand final. This dual slalom style of riding has its roots in the Sheffield ‘mates racing’ scene. These informal races see everyone from world champions to amateurs pitch up and race each other. The success of these events is thanks in large part to the profound sense of community in Sheffield’s mountain bike scene – which will certainly be in force on the day of the Dual.
