CYCLE SERVICE OFO REVEALS SHEFFIELD SUCCESS For the first time in the UK a dockless bike scheme is sharing usage data, providing a never before seen insight into Sheffield’s cycling habits. The city was ofo’s first in the north of the UK and follows successful launches in Cambridge, Oxford, London and Norwich. The scheme is already used by 200m users in 21 countries to make 32m trips every day. The company recently announced plans to launch in nearby Leeds. Over 28,000 trips have been made in the steel city on ofo bikes so far, with figures showing almost a 20% rise from January to
February. As a result, the company will be adding 300 new bikes in Sheffield at the end of this month. Some 13,232 trips were made in January, growing to over 15,000 in February, proving that the scheme rose in popularity even from the initial period of excitement immediately after launch. There have been 6,220 unique users in Sheffield up to the 11th of February, with more signing up every day. Unusually, the majority of the trips have taken place between 3pm and 5pm each day, proving that ofo users are not limited to commuters. Around 550 trips are made
each morning between 7am and 9am, rising to a peak of around 1,100 between 3pm and 5pm.
Unsurprisingly, the locations where journeys begin have been focused within the city centre, with Kelham Island Museum, Sheffield Train Station and the university campuses the most popular of all. With the average trip lasting around 14 minutes and users travelling just over 1.4km, the top destinations are also within the city centre. However, the suburbs of Broomhill, Nether Edge and Walkley remain popular end points,

hinting at a large usage from Sheffield’s student population. Joseph Seal-Driver, ofo’s general manager for the UK & Ireland, said: “The initial uptake in Sheffield has been nothing short of fantastic. We are pleased to see usage numbers grow each month, and as the days get longer and the weather improves, we expect to see more and more Sheffield residents adopting ofo bikes as their go-to mode of transport” How it works ofo’s eye-catching yellow bikes are hired through a smartphone app for just 50p for 30 minutes and
can be picked up and dropped off anywhere that bike parking is allowed. ofo does not require riders to pay a deposit before use. To access a bike, riders can simply download the ofo app and unlock their nearest bike via Bluetooth connection. Once their ride is complete, users simply close the lock to complete their ride and make it available for the next person to use. ofo also employs geofencing technology to ensure that riders use the bikes within the designated ‘Home Zone’ which is clearly visible in the app.

PLANS TO IMPROVE ROTHERHAM’S CLIFTON PARK Rotherham Council is developing plans to provide new tennis courts and increase car parking spaces at Clifton Park to improve facilities for its many different visitors. The Council is working with the Lawn Tennis Association and Sport England to fund, subject to planning consent, five new floodlit tennis courts within
Clifton Park on the site of the old bowling greens, which have not been used for a number of years. Car parking will also be increased by extending the museum car park onto the existing tennis courts as part of the same scheme. Rotherham Council’s Strategic Director for Regeneration and Environment Damien Wilson said: “These
improvements will increase opportunities for people to play more sports and, as our new improved courts will be flood-lit, people will be able to play for longer in the evenings, in a safe environment. “Meanwhile, with increasing visitor numbers to Clifton Park, the additional car parking will provide muchneeded space.” The Council has
been communicating with Moorgate Tennis Club and other users of Clifton Park to try and ensure that, where possible, the Council can meet their short term needs at some of the borough’s other parks for the short period the renovations are taking place. The work is expected to be carried out within the next 12 to 24 months. Damien added:
“We are expecting another busy summer season at Clifton Park and so we can start work imminently on the car park once finance is in place to meet the immediate need to accommodate a large number of visitors to the park. Meanwhile, as the tennis courts is a much larger project, we will continue to work with our external funders to progress the
scheme.” The Council is in discussion with the Lawn Tennis Association and members of the Rotherham Tennis network about how to best manage the transition and look to provide other tennis improvements for Rotherham’s residents. Paul Sheard, Regional Tennis Participation Manager, of the Lawn Tennis
Association, said: “The Lawn Tennis Association is supportive of the plan to relocate the tennis courts. The proposed project will provide an additional tennis court, as well as new flood-lighting on all courts which will help ensure that tennis playing opportunities are available throughout the year. The Lawn Tennis Association is working in partnership with
Rotherham Council and Parks Tennis CIC to make tennis more accessible and provide programmes that will take the sport to a new audience in Rotherham.” Anyone who would like further information or would like to comment on the proposed changes can contact Clifton Park.

I was in the pub with the missus last night, and I said, “I love you”. She said, “Is that you or the beer talking?” I replied, “It’s me, talking to the beer!” I discovered that I have an amazing talent today. I found I can melt ice cubes just by staring at them, it takes a few hours though. Feeling cold today? Go and stand in a corner for a bit. They are usually around 90 degrees. You know it’s starting to get cold outside when you trip over dog turd rather than stand in it! I was on a date with a gorgeous girl. Well, I say date, we had dinner and watched a movie. Then the plane landed. I used to go out with a Welsh girl who had 36DDs. She had ridiculously long name. I told my boss I needed a pay rise, I said that 3 other companies were after me Boss “which ones?” I said “the electric, gas, & the water”

MEADOWHALL LAUNCHES BOOK DRIVE FOR WORLD BOOK DAY Meadowhall is launching a community initiative on World Book Day to increase access to reading for disadvantaged Sheffield school children. The Centre is calling upon members of the
public to donate pre-loved or unwanted children’s books at special collection points incentre on March 1st-5th. Donated books will be re-distributed to three local schools with the aim of improving access to literacy to children from disadvantaged backgrounds. The call comes after research from The National Literacy Trust revealed that 1 in 8 disadvantaged children don’t have a book of their own at home. The report also revealed that children who have access to a book are 15 times more likely

to read above the level expected for their age than peers who say they don’t own a book. Children born into communities with serious literacy challenges are more likely to do worse in school, be less financially well-off and have poorer health - with life expectancy significantly lower than in areas with a higher incidence of literacy. With parts of Sheffield among the most illiterate in the country, Meadowhall wanted to ensure that as many children as possible in the city had access to reading materials to not only boost skill development, but life outcomes too. Centre Director Darren Pearce said: “We know there are families within the communities surrounding Meadowhall where some children don’t even own a book at home. “Reading has been proven to improve outcomes for young people - with high literacy linked to better job prospects later in life, a richer vocabulary, well developed empathy and ‘people skills’. “We’d like to encourage people to donate their unwanted children’s books this World Book
Day so we can improve the literacy skills - and lives - of as many local children as possible.” Special collection points will be set up in both of Meadowhall’s Waterstone’s stores on Park Lane and The Arcade from Thursday 1st March to Monday 5th March. Donated books will be re-distributed to children at schools which are part of Meadowhall’s Young Readers Programme in partnership with The National Literacy Trust.

WANT TO STOP SMOKING BUT NOT SURE WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR STOP SMOKING APPOINTMENT ? READ ON… Your local stop smoking service is staffed by expert advisors who will provide a range of proven methods to help you quit. We will give you accurate information and advice and give you friendly professional support during the first few months of stopping smoking. You will normally be offered a one-to-one appointment with an adviser, but depending on your circumstances you may be offered a group. The venue could be a local GP surgery, pharmacy or our city centre Quit Stop in Sheffield Moor Market. The majority of people who see an advisor will get through the first month after quitting without smoking a cigarette. You are up to four times more likely to stop smoking for good if you receive help from an NHS Stop Smoking Service. At your first meeting with an advisor you will talk about why you smoke and why you want to quit, aswell as any attempts you have made to quit in the past. You will also be able to decide on a quit date. You will be offered a breath test, this will show the levels of carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas in cigarette smoke, in your body. At your first session you will also discuss stop smoking treatments available on the NHS (prescription charges may apply) to help you. These are nicotine replacement products, including patches, gum, lozenges, inhalators and mouth and nasal sprays, and the stop smoking medication, Champix.
We can help you decide which type of treatment is right for you and how to use it and arrange for you to have a voucher to collect your medication from a pharmacy. There is evidence that e-cigarettes can help people stop smoking, however e-cigarettes are not currently available as medicines so they cannot be supplied by the stop smoking services or prescribed on the NHS. However if you want to use an e-cigarette to help you quit, you can still get advice and support from a stop smoking advisor to give you the best chance of success. The 12 week programme of support offered to you requires you to commit to not having a single puff of a cigarette, Measuring carbon monoxide levels is not about checking up on you, it’s more to motivate you to stay smoke-free by showing how your body is already recovering. Stop smoking advisors are also very experienced in helping you identify difficult situations when there may be a strong temptation to relapse and start smoking and they can help you come up with ways to cope with or avoid these situations. If you do relapse, we won’t judge, nag or take in personally. We are a friendly face that understands how difficult it is to quit and we will help you get back on track to becoming a non smoker.

CANCER - DON’T IGNORE THE SUBTLE SIGNS STAYING SAFE ONLINE It’s not just lumps and bumps that need to be checked out. We ask the experts about the less obvious warning signs to look out for. There are over 200 different types of cancer in total, and more than one in three people will develop some form of the condition during their lifetime, so it’s important to be clued-up on the potential warning signs that something isn’t quite right. Where it gets tricky though, is when those warning signs aren’t exactly obvious. Most of us know to get any unusual lumps checked out by a doctor, but there are several other more subtle, or less talked-about, symptoms that are just as important to know about – many of which we often easily brush aside and ignore. Treatments work best when cancer is caught early, so noticing any unusual changes – and getting them checked out – sooner rather than later can make all the difference to your health. Remember, most of the time, these ‘symptoms’ will turn out to be entirely harmless and don’t automatically mean you have cancer, but it’s always best to get them seen by a doctor and talk through your concerns. Here, medical experts explain more about some of the red flags that many people overlook.
1. Unexplained weight loss Dropping a dress size might seem like good news at first, but if you haven’t made any significant changes to your diet or exercise routine, it could be a sign that something is wrong. Many different cancers cause weight loss. This is because tumours use up a lot of energy and nutrition as they grow. Small fluctuations in weight are normal, and it’s not uncommon for a noticeable change in your size to happen after a stressful event – but unexplained significant weight loss should never be ignored. Many people with cancer experience weight loss at some point, but it occurs most often with cancers of the stomach, oesophagus, pancreas or lung. If you’re struggling to put any lost weight back on, speak to your GP, as they will be able to rule out any serious illnesses. 2. Ongoing tiredness We all have those days where we can’t seem to keep our eyes open at our desk, and if your lifestyle is particularly demanding and you’re not getting enough sleep, then it stands to reason that you’re going to feel tired. But unusual exhaustion that’s been going on for a while, could be due to something else going on beneath the surface. Fatigue can be an early sign of cancer; a continuous feeling of exhaustion that doesn’t get better even after you rest. This a symptom that is relatively easy to miss, especially if you lead a busy lifestyle. Often, fatigue occurs in the early stages of cancer because of blood loss in the body. Cancers of the digestive tract tend to cause internal bleeding. While the blood loss may be too subtle to notice in one’s faeces, it may gradually lead to anaemia. The first sign of this may be fatigue and exhaustion, as well as shortness of breath, palpitations and ankle swelling. 3. Unexplained or irregular bleeding Both women and men can experience this. If a woman bleeds 12 months after menopause, it’s a worrying sign – no matter if the bleeding is light or not – as it could signify cervical or endometrial cancer. Irregular periods and bleeding between cycles, or after sex, can also be a cause for concern in younger women, but this could also be indicative of other health problems or hormonal fluctuations. As before, it’s always best to go and see your doctor as soon as possible, and let them decide if further investigations are needed. Additionally, rectal bleeding shouldn’t be ignored. While it’s most commonly linked to a haemorrhoid, rectal bleeding with dark blood should be enough of a concern to make a trip to the GP. 4. Swelling in the neck Medical advice says that we should regularly
check our breasts and testicles for any errant lumps or bumps, but your neck could also be a key indicator of cancerous cells. Many patients don’t realise the significance of a persistent neck lump, and leave it too long before seeing a doctor. It is a worrying symptom, as it can signify a tumour anywhere in the head or neck, including cancer of the mouth, throat, ear, sinuses, larynx [voice box] or thyroid. Neck growths can also be a sign of blood cancer and lymphoma: Neck swellings are common with viral infections, but these usually settle down within a couple of weeks. If a swelling persists for six weeks or more, they should be examined by a specialist.
The internet is a great tool for banking, paying bills, online shopping, looking up holiday destinations, researching information and a lot more. However, fraudsters and cyber crooks are also prolific, hiding beneath the cloak of anonymity the internet offers.
The dangers In 2016 the annual Crime Survey for England and Wales estimated there were 3.6 million cases of fraud and two million computer misuse offences. The Office of National Statistics which today acknowledges that previous high volume crimes 5. Mouth ulcers that don’t heal such as burglary and vehicle theft are A mouth ulcer is a pretty run-of-the-mill nowhere near as common as they used complaint, which should clear up on its own to be. Rather these crimes have been within a week or two. If an ulcer’s causing replaced by various types of online fraud discomfort for more than three weeks however, which the police say has reached epidemic or you’re getting lots of stubborn ulcers, it proportions. could be a sign of something more serious Briefly, online fraud can be divided into going on. Many of us experience mouth ulcers four categories: when we’re a bit run down and our immune • Bank and credit account fraud system is weakened. The lining of the mouth • Advance fee fraud – victims are tricked renews itself every two weeks, which usually into handing over helps any ulcers heal themselves. So if you’re • Non-investment fraud – criminals con a experiencing persistent ulcers for over three victim into buying something weeks, make sure to seek medical advice. • Fake investment or charity scams There is also the danger of hacking and 6. Persistent bloating malware: Many of us will feel bloated after a big meal, • Hackers steal personal information such but if you feel bloated every day (even if it as in the recent Equifax hack in which comes and goes) then this could be a sign of near 150 million personal records were something more than just a heavy dinner or stolen a food intolerance. If you persistently feel • Malware insinuates its way into a bloated for three weeks or more, it’s best to visit your doctor. The same goes for feeling computer and steals sensitive personal infull quickly, or loss of appetite. formation such as bank account numbers, passwords and credit card details 7. Changes to bowel habits Our bowel patterns can tend to vary from day to day, depending on what we’ve eaten or how stressed we are. However, any ongoing usual pattern changes, particularly if you are producing more frequent, smaller stools, like pellets or pencil-thin motions, could indicate bowel cancer. Other symptoms may include rectal bleeding, weight loss, fatigue, abdominal pain and/or swelling, or a feeling that the bowels aren’t emptying fully: Bowel cancer is one of the most common types of cancer, yet it often causes no symptoms until it has progressed to a large tumour. The earlier it is diagnosed, the better the prognosis, so these symptoms should always be taken seriously. 8. Non-healing skin blemishes Skin blemishes occur in various shapes, sizes and colours, and can appear on the skin at any time in life. People often overlook small non-healing blemishes on the skin. It’s easy to see why this is, as when we age, there are many different spots and marks on the skin and it’s difficult to distinguish between the innocent ones and the potentially harmful ones. As a rule, if a mole enlarges, gets darker, has an irregular outline, or uneven levels of pigmentation, then it should arouse suspicion of malignant melanoma, a serious form of skin cancer. [But also] any blemish that bleeds, gets scabby, ulcerated or fails to heal, should also be shown to a doctor. 9. Unexplained pain A crick in the neck, an ache in the lower back – everyday aches and pains are common and usually nothing serious, so it’s very easy for people to overlook this potential symptom. But any ongoing pain, anywhere in the body, that doesn’t seem to have an obvious cause or doesn’t go away, should be checked out. Pelvic pain may mean ovarian cancer; back pain may be caused by secondaries from an unnoticed tumour elsewhere, such as breast or prostate; abdominal pain may be caused by cancer of the stomach, bowel, or pancreas to name a few examples; and chest pain may indicate lung cancer. Any unexplained pain, particularly if new, persistent, constant, disturbing sleep, or associated with weight loss, should be brought to the doctor’s attention.
Protection tips • Before making an online purchase always look for the padlock sign in the browser bar. This tells you the website is secure and your payment details are encrypted. • Beware of phishing emails that try and get you to click on a link or download a document. If the link is clicked or the document downloaded malware will infect the computer. • You can identify phishing emails because they drop into your email box unexpectedly. Typically they appear to be from a legitimate organisation but if you’re not expecting a communication simply ‘trash’ the mail. • Use antivirus software. It protects you from all types of malware, including ransomware. It also flags up malware that is hiding in emails and warns you against visiting websites that have malware hidden in them. • Beware of cold calls. Often following a major hack customers receive cold calls claiming to be from the organisation and requesting personal information such as bank account or credit card numbers. It’s a scam. • Use really strong passwords on all your accounts, which ideally should be at least ten characters long and consist of a mix of upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols. If your details are leaked in a hack, fraudsters find it very hard to ‘break’ these passwords.

WINTER COMMUTING: I THAWED THE LAW Winter is most definitely upon us and the ‘Beast from the East’ is causing havoc on the roads and railways. With the cold weather set to continue we’re likely to see more and more transport issues for commuters. If you run your own business, bad weather can cause chaos in the workplace when staff are delayed or can’t get in at all. So what employment law regulations are in place when handling transport troubles in winter? Hannah Parsons, a solicitor at DAS Law, looks at what you need to know…
If the office is closed If you have closed the office because it is inaccessible, or not enough staff are able to make it in, you should usually still pay employees for that day. Withholding pay when employees are unable to work through no fault of their own could be an unauthorised deduction from wages or a serious breach of their contract of employment. In those circumstances, your employees may be able to bring a legal claim against you for non-payment of the wages and any losses. Some employment contracts do however contain a temporary ‘lay-off’ clause - if this is the case, you can refuse to pay full pay to employees for a limited time and for days when the workplace is not open. General advice As travel disruption is likely to occur reliably year after year, it is recommended that you put a policy in place covering what is expected of employees if the weather prevents them from getting to work and at relevant times of year dust off the policy and remind employees of what it contains. This will ensure that there is no confusion regarding non-attendance and how it will be treated during bad weather. If your business suffers particularly from widespread travel issues or is particularly exposed in poor weather conditions you may wish to consider a policy of allowing working from home or other off-site alternatives if the nature of the work allows it.

If an employee can’t get to work There is no law which says you have to pay an employee who can’t get to work due to travel disruption or adverse weather conditions. Of course, it may say in their employment contract that they will be paid under these circumstances, in which case you must honour this. It is usually not possible (or advisable) to force an employee to use up annual leave for any days they miss due to travel issues, although your employees may wish to nominate a day as annual leave rather than not receiving any payment for it. While it is legal not to pay staff who are unable to get into work (subject to what is written within their contract), it is usually best to be flexible in these situations and consider in each case whether or not to pay employees in these circumstances. Bad weather is an obstacle which is outside of anyone’s control and it is inadvisable to create incentives for employees to risk their safety attempting to get to work in poor conditions. Sometimes, an employee may say they cannot come to work due to school closures forcing them to stay at home and look after their children. If the school was closed at short notice, this would be likely to constitute
an emergency relating to a dependent, in which case they would be entitled to a time off to arrange care for their children. This type of leave does not have to be paid, although an employer may choose to have a different policy. If disciplinary issues arise due to an employee being unable to get to work (for example, if it is part of a similar pattern of non-attendance or you suspect they simply chose not to come in), it is important to follow a fair procedure when tackling the issue, as you would with any disciplinary matter .

Advertorial
Based near the picturesque village of Hope in the Derbyshire Peak District, The Cordwainer is one of the UK's most experienced orthopaedic shoemakers. Over the years the company has helped hundreds of people find mobility and comfort which does not come at the expense of style and good looks. The company is owned by Philip Taylor who’s been making orthopaedic shoes since he was eleven years of age so has a lifetime’s experience. He moved the business to Brough, Bradwell back in 2010 to be nearer family roots and now attracts clients from across the Yorkshire region. Philip is helped by a team of enthusiastic apprentices that will ensure the business is ready for the future, and to deal with the increasing number of clients he has introduced 3D feet measuring technology and invested in new sewing and stitching machines. In a time when other companies are fighting to stay afloat, The Cordwainer has already seen orders rise by 30% over the past three years alone. Philip puts this partially down to his disabled customers consider their footwear needs as a priority and not a luxury and are increasingly being let down by the footwear
supplied through their hospital. He explained that this was because those concerned do not get to meet with the shoemaker and rely upon an under funded NHS and short clinical appointments to discuss their often complex needs. Philip agreed that having bespoke orthopaedic footwear made privately can be costly, but his customer’s stories show that all the effort and expense is worth it as they’ve a better quality of life. The service allows for a much wider choice of styles and materials, and now the availability of vegan footwear which utilise a range of ‘non-leather’ materials which are hard to differentiate from real leather. If all that wasn’t enough, this company also links clients visits with a stay in the Peak District as they can arrange accommodation at one of the areas delightful bed and breakfast outlets. An increasing number of clients are being referred to The Cordwainer by hospitals and CCG’s (Clinical Commissioning Groups) enabling NHS clients to receive the footwear they need, although this is at the discretion of the clinic concerned. Those hospitals have been able to save money as they see the client given the correct footwear rather than constant visits to the hospital for alterations and remakes of footwear. The Cordwainer’s motto is ‘Mobility and style – the choice is yours’ and is the perfect fit for anyone with a disability and complex foot issues.

New online film tackles stigma around older drinkers
The number of people in the UK aged 50 plus experiencing alcohol related harm is increasing. The reasons for this are complex, but one of the main barriers to older adults getting help is the stigma around alcohol use – particularly with this age group. A short film launched by Drink Wise, Age Well – a programme aimed at helping the over 50s make healthier choices about alcohol – looks at some of the key reasons older people drink, in a bid to generate better understanding of the tough later life realities that could lead any one of us to drink more than we should. A major study for Drink Wise, Age Well when it was first established revealed that of those aged 50 plus who said they were drinking more now than in the past, retirement (40%); bereavement (26%) and loss of sense of purpose (20%) were the main reasons given. The film is centred on four characters going through key life transitions that have triggered harmful drinking. Middle-aged couple Derek and Jackie are coming to terms with life after their children have left home, while Kevin has recently retired from running his own small business and grandmother, Liz, is having the pain of losing her husband compounded by family conflict arising from
her main coping mechanism – frequent drinking. Endless days stretching out ahead with no commitments might seem like heaven to many people. But for some older adults a lack of structure in their day – whether due to retirement, bereavement or “empty-nest” - can cause problem drinking, which can lead to serious health conditions. Julie Breslin, Head of the Drink Wise, Age Well programme said, “Significant cultural changes and an ageing population means harmful drinking in the over 50s is showing up in national statistics as never before. “Increasing alcohol consumption in our ageing population has been well documented, but the reasons behind it less so. Approximately one in three
older adults with an alcohol problem first develop it later in life, often for changes we will all go through. Retirement and bereavement can leave older adults feeling isolated and drinking at home to cope. “We hope this film will highlight to friends, families, peers and partners of older adults who drink problematically that there are sometimes understandable reasons why they do so. It might even make people stop and think that older relatives could be drinking, but keeping it hidden to avoid the shame.” The thought-provoking film shot in the style of a nature documentary can be seen at www.drinkwiseagewell.org. uk where there is plenty of help and advice. If you are a Sheffield resident and would like to speak to someone about your own or a loved one’s drinking call 0800 032 3723.

GILL FURNISS MP BACKS NSPCC CHILDREN’S MENTAL HEALTH CAMPAIGN
Sheffield, Brightside & Hillsborough MP Gill Furniss showed her support for improving children’s mental health services by attending the NSPCC’s Are You There? parliamentary reception. With the Government’s public consultation on its green paper proposals for children’s mental health support due to close on 2 March, the charity’s event meant MPs were able to discuss the increasingly important role that Childline plays in the mental health landscape. The event was hosted in the House of Commons on Monday 26 February, where founder of Childline Dame Esther Rantzen revealed the service had delivered 101,454 counselling sessions on mental and emotional health issues in the last year alone. Dame Esther stressed the urgency for investment in Childline as she told politicians and other key stakeholders how two thirds of Childline counselling sessions take place outside school hours, and that children often use Childline as a means of early mental health support. Some children have told counsellors they are being directed to contact Childline after normal working hours by statutory services, such as
child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) or local authority children’s services in England. This shows the need for additional out-of-hours support, and is just one of the factors contributing to the huge demand for support from Childline. Currently counsellors can only respond to 3 out of 4 children who need their help. Gill Furniss MP heard from several young people who had benefitted from Childline after suffering from mental health issues, ranging from depression to anxiety. Barbara Keeley, Shadow Minister for Mental Health and Social Care also spoke at the event and stressed the importance of a mental health support system that is accessible for all children
and young people, as well as adequate funding for voluntary services, like Childline, that can provide early support for children. The publi can get behind the NSPCC’s children’s mental health campaign, Are you there? by signing a petition at www.nspcc.org.uk to encourage Government to increase funding to Childline before 2 March. The funding will help to recruit more counsellors, deliver training to help manage the increased complexity of counselling sessions, and help provide more online resources for children and young people. It costs £4 for a counsellor to answer a child’s call for help to Childline.

BRAND NEW EXHIBITION AT WESTON PARK MUSEUM EXPLORES SHEFFIELD’S REMARKABLE HISTORY OF PROTEST AND ACTIVISM The passing of the Representation of the People Act on 6 February 1918 was a major electoral reform which extended voting rights to 8.5 million women across the UK. The Act was the result of a long struggle for the suffrage movement and the beginnings of British democracy as we know it today. To mark the 100th anniversary of this milestone in the development of our electoral system, Changing Lives: 200 Years of People and Protest in Sheffield will celebrate how people in our city have stood up for what they believe in over the past two centuries. Opened at Weston Park Museum on the anniversary of the Representation of the People Act, Changing Lives will explore the city’s remarkable history of protest and activism. From the Radical Press in the late
1700s right up to causes championed in the city today, the exhibition will chronicle Sheffield’s story of protest through the different approaches campaigners have employed in fighting for their cause. Changing Lives will highlight both historical and contemporary examples of non-violent direct action and its impact on driving change. The tradition of trespass walks will be explored through objects including the walking boots of GHB Ward, founder of the Sheffield Clarion Ramblers and activist for the right to roam. Amongst the stories featured in the exhibition will be that of Sheffield Women Against Pit Closures, a group formed soon after the Miners’ Strike in 1984, whose Houghton Main pit camp brought public attention to further pit closures in the 1990s. The exhibition
will also include local photographer Chris Saunders’ powerful portraits of people involved in Sheffield’s current tree protests. The exhibition will examine how protesters have employed a variety of creative strategies to support their cause, from Samuel Holberry and the Sheffield Chartists to fly posters from the 2016 Black Lives Matter campaign. Visitors will find out more about the 1911 census evasion, led by suffragette and Sheffield resident, Adela Pankhurst, as well the radical writings of The Sheffield Register (1787-1794) and The Sheffield Iris (17941825). The Celebrated Sheffield Street Band, Sheffield Socialist Choir and Sheffield Pride will also feature, highlighting the power of humour, carnival and song, strong protest traditions which are alive in the city today.
Changing Lives will also examine the important role that solidarity plays in protest, and showcase how Sheffield residents have demonstrated unity in protests on a local, national and international level. Visitors will discover objects from the World Peace Congress held at Sheffield City Hall in 1950, alongside placards and banners from more recent protests, including those supporting Junior Doctors, as well as the anti-Trump

Gimme ABBA have been performing this fabulous tribute to ABBA for over 17 years, with the current line up being together for the past eight years! 2017/18 will see the band embark on their fifth nationwide UK tour, ‘On and On and On’, a jam-packed spectacular performance totaling over two hours including even more songs and fascinating theatrical elements. This complete and superb ABBA show comes with a repertoire that draws from the greatest hits of Sweden’s most famous export. It is full of all the popular songs known and loved by millions, along with some additional tunes to please the most ardent Abba fan. The many costume changes, choreographed dance routines and four-part vocal harmonies come together to re-create that original ABBA party feel and make this a show not to be missed.

demonstrations which took place in the city and around the globe in 2017. Louisa Briggs, Project Curator (Sheffield: Protest & Activism) said: “Sheffield has an incredible history of protest and activism. The passion people have shown, the commitment they’ve demonstrated, and the sacrifices they’ve often made for the causes that matter to them are a hugely important part of the city’s story. We’re
thrilled to have the opportunity to share that story through this exhibition at Weston Park Museum.” Changing Lives is part of a season exploring protest and activism – the exhibition is accompanied by Hope Is Strong at the Millennium Gallery, which opened on Saturday 17 February. The exhibitions will be also be accompanied by a programme of events – see www.museumssheffield.org.uk for more information.

DINE SHEFFIELD RETURNS TO CITY CENTRE FOR FORTNIGHT OF FOOD OFFERS Dine Sheffield, Sheffield’s answer to New York’s Restaurant Week, returns to the city centre from 15 – 29 March for a fortnight of dining deals at some of the city’s most-loved cafes, pubs and restaurants. A flagship initiative of Sheffield BID’s Alive After Five strategy, Dine Sheffield gives diners the opportunity to enjoy fantastic food at great prices across Sheffield city centre’s diverse dining scene, whilst boosting the early evening economy. From world cuisine to pub grub, café favourites and fine dining, some of Sheffield city centre’s favourite eateries have signed up to Dine Sheffield, including Yorkshire restaurant Silversmiths, pizza paradise Craft and Dough, café favourite The Cabin and West One’s new burger joint Kerbedge. During Dine Sheffield, restaurants involved will be offering bespoke set menus, priced at either £5, £10 or £15 per person. Vouchers for the offers can be downloaded at www.dinesheffield.co.uk and redeemed during Dine Sheffield, from 15 – 29 March.
Diane Jarvis, Sheffield BID Manager, said: “Sheffield city centre has a strong food offer, comprising of both big-name chains and muchloved independents. Following the success of the first Dine Sheffield in September 2017, when thousands of diners downloaded vouchers to redeem at city centre restaurants, Sheffield BID has decided to run Dine Sheffield again. “Dine Sheffield helps boosts the local economy, increases early-evening footfall and gives diners the opportunity to enjoy fantastic deals across Sheffield city centre’s dynamic dining scene.” During Dine Sheffield, Sheffield’s foodies will be able to enjoy discounted dining at their favourite restaurants, or give somewhere new a try. In 2017, diners from Sheffield and beyond travelled to the city centre to take advantage of the great deals on offer. Dine Sheffield is a flagship initiative for Sheffield BID’s Alive After Five strategy, which is helping to boost the economy by promoting a new early evening experience through retail, entertainment, food and drink. During Dine Sheffield, diners will be able to park for as little as £1 in council car parks and street bays after 4:30pm as part of Alive After 5’s Sound as a Pound parking offer. They will also be able to enjoy 20% off car parking at Q Park car parks in the city centre, using the code DINE20. If you’d prefer to leave the car at home, First is offering one half-price adult bus ticket to diners who download the First Bus m-Tickets app and use the code DineShef467.

VAPING AT THE WHEEL COULD BE A CRIME WARN POLICE Using e-cigarettes while driving could land motorists with the same penalty as being caught on a mobile phone. Police have warned that in certain circumstances vaping behind the wheel is against the law and could see drivers receive three, six or nine points on their licence, or in some severe cases, a driving ban. They could also face a fine of up to £2,500. Although vaping while driving isn’t a crime in itself, the handheld electronic devices have the potential to distract drivers causing them to pay less attention to the road. One of the main concerns for police is the sheer volume of smoke produced when vaping which could easily obscure a driver’s view of the road. Sgt Carl Knapp, of the Surrey and Sussex Roads Policing Unit, said: “The smoke caused by vapes is a distraction, and the consequences can be dire. “All it takes is a moment to become distracted and potentially cause a crash or, even worse, a fatality.” “There are no laws prohibiting vaping. However, you need to be in full and proper control of your vehicle at all times.” Sgt John Davis, of Surrey Police, added: “Firstly, any person who is distracted in any way could be guilty of an offence – whether that be smoking, vaping, eating, etc.” He went on to explain that scenarios where motorists were deemed to be distracted by their e-cigarettes would be dealt with on a “case-by-case basis”. He added any specific laws regarding vaping behind the wheel were unlikely to come into place any time soon. Sgt Davis explained: “I am unaware of any

studies, either in the UK or elsewhere, where the effects of vaping have been looked at. In investigations that we conduct, any distraction would need to be dealt with on a caseby-case basis. “With regards a national discussion, it hasn’t been raised as an issue, so it’s unlikely to be discussed at a national level. The Highway Code also covers distractions, as does the law. “It would be impractical to bring in a law for any new ‘distraction’ that comes along. The mobile phone laws were brought in and then penalties increased because it became a very real problem.”

ANGLER’S CORNER
become friends in the future, or with whom I may be able to work at some time. I’ve got sore feet, a dry throat, and backache, eyes that with Clint Walker sting and ears that buzz, but it really is superb It’s been a pretty monumental week for me fun, and if you ever get asked to ‘do’ a show this week, with some very good results, and on behalf of a sponsor, then go for it, try it, and not all of them on the bank! I’ve had some enjoy it! great fun at the Northern Angling Show A couple of weeks prior to the show, I was with the team from RAD Angling. I always enjoy the Northern Angling Show, its full of contacted by a gentleman named Andrew who manages much of what goes on at Deeper, very friendly anglers who enjoy some top makers of the handy little castable sonar which brand deals and get to meet a few of the can be used by anglers to map lakes and find ‘celebrity’ turns who frequent the angling fish. I had one of the original Deeper products world. On a personal note, I met Jeremy Wade for the when they first hit the UK market, and made first time after we discovered his pitch directly extensive use of it to find a couple of spots on opposite ours on the first day of the show, a target water which held fish; brilliant! As a and found him to be a very personable chap. result of the initial contact, I was invited to join I have no idea how he finds the patience to the official Deeper team of anglers, become have a similar minute long chat with everyone an advocate for the brand to help showcase who queued to visit him, but he maintained the product range on the bank and elsewhere. an affable demeanour throughout the whole I was very pleased to accept and took delivery day, and when you consider that some for two hours to meet him, you can imagine how many of the brand new Deeper Pro+ and accessories times he posed for photographs, and how many just prior to the show. I had chance to get an hour on the bank and books he signed! But it wasn’t all about television personalities; took my new gadget to a nearby lake to check it out. A hugely improved connectivity for me, it’s about meeting other anglers who share similar interests, and whilst on the RAD range now means that it can be cast to Angling stand, accommodating those who around 100m, and the user can still expect to would like to find out more about the top receive information via WiFi technology! In truth, I only took it out Thank you. for a short period of time just to get some As much as I enjoy the show, it’s incredibly product photography ‘in the bag’, but after hard work, and its testament to the organisers that the queue to get in snaked around much of I’d completed the images, I had chance to the car park and beyond. Initial estimates vary explore just a small section of the lake, and was pleased to find some fish holed up… I’m between 14-18000 anglers over the weekend, so as you can imagine, it’s non-stop from the not telling you where though, you’ll just have minute the doors open, with very little chance to get a Deeper to find out! to grab a drink or a snack until the doors close again 9 hours later! I love it, and hope that all those who attended did too! So, in the aftermath of the show, as I sit writing this after a microwaved Sunday lunch, I can reflect on a great weekend. WARNE REVELS IN DERBY DELIGHT
A dramatic turnaround in stoppage-time saw the Millers win all three points in a South Yorkshire derby to remember, with manager Paul Warne reflecting on his side’s performance. “It was sort of a game of two halves, really,” said Warne. First-half I don’t think there was a lot in it but Donny had more composure on the ball. It’s the first time we’ve played in a full house for a while, which is great and we want people to come and watch this great team. “I thought Donny had a bit more composure and adjusted to the conditions quicker than we did. I thought if I got the lads in at 0-0 by half time I’d be happy with that. I didn’t think they were doing what we asked them to do. “We asked them where they thought it was going wrong at half time and we adjusted it. Then I thought the second half we were really good. I hope the two Donny lads are all right, as neither of them looked like good injuries. I hope they’re okay. It sort of ruined the run of the game. It wasn’t smooth, but we had a lot of possession, attempts on goal and corners. “Then there was another injury so we didn’t get going as well as we’d liked.” It’s now seven wins on the spin and 14 unbeaten as Rovers were overturned thanks to a lovely header from Michael Smith before the striker won a penalty in the 12th minute of stoppage-time, allowing Joe Newell to seal the points. “In the end, I threw my dice and we went for it,” he continued. “Fortunately, it’s nice to get a penalty in the last minute. I haven’t watched it back but I’m presuming it was one. I think he comes from the blindside of the ‘keeper and he’s pulled him down. That’s testament to the lads, they kept running and chasing every ball which is what I ask them to do every week. To perform like that for us makes us all really proud. As a staff and dressing room, they’re
really pleased to come away with a win. “They don’t know when they’re beaten. They’ve won 11 in 14 and got three draws. You can’t guarantee results and the performance first half wasn’t up to our standards but it was second half. We created enough chances in the second half, we had the clearance off the line, couple of headers from set-pieces and we did more than enough to win the game. “I thought Doncaster came here and played really well. They made it really hard for us, we’re a good team and in good form but they came here and really gave us a tough game. If it would have been a draw I couldn’t have had too many complaints. But to nick it at the end, the way Smudge (Michael Smith) and Lavs (Caolan Lavery) chased it down for us and got the penalty. I’ve just said to Joe Newell he’s a bigger man than me, ‘cause I couldn’t have took that penalty – no chance. “I thought all of our set-pieces were put in good areas today. Woody might have had one, Will Vaulks might have had one. Another day we might have scored more goals and made it a lot easier for ourselves. “I think that’s only the second penalty we’ve had. Kieffer (Moore) missed our other one so it’s like Walt Disney stuff. Rotherham fans leave this ground really happy and, hopefully, they’ve been entertained by what the lads have tried today.”
MILLERS CLUB MILLERS TO HOST TIME OF STATEMENT OUR LIVES 2... Rotherham United are investigating incidents which took place inside and outside the stadium during and after Saturday’s game with Doncaster Rovers. The club are currently working closely with South Yorkshire Police and Doncaster Rovers as well as analysing match and CCTV footage, following a pitch incursion from a minority of supporters during Saturday’s game. The club understands that the last minute winning goal provided feelings of strong emotions, but our duty of care to players and officials and responsibilities under FA regulations mean we cannot allow pitch incursions to take place. The Football Offences Act clearly states the following ‘It is an offence for a person at a designated football match to go onto the playing area, or any area adjacent to the playing area to which spectators are not generally admitted, without lawful authority or lawful excuse (which shall be for him to prove).’ The club are also investigating disorder on the concourse and outside the ground following the end of the game. There were over 11,000 fans inside the stadium on Saturday and we are aware that only a small minority of people acted irresponsibly, with the vast majority enjoying a great afternoon’s entertainment. It is regrettable therefore that we are having to take this sort of action.

Rotherham United are delighted to present the second instalment of the Time of our Lives event, which will take place on Monday 12th March. BOSS HAILS ROVERS’ FIGHTING SPIRIT Darren Ferguson felt there were positives to take from Rovers’ performance against Rotherham United. Injury-time goals from Michael Smith and Joe Newell meant that John Marquis’ firsthalf opener counted for nothing, but Ferguson praised his side’s performance for the most part. He said: “It’s a hard one to take after losing to literally the last kick of the game, my players didn’t deserve that given the effort and commitment they showed. “It was a typical derby game, they didn’t give us many problems at all and we managed to score a goal which John finished very well. “Because of the way Rotherham play you are always going to have to do a lot of defending, in the main we managed that well and limited them to just a few half chances.”
ROWE: WE’LL BOUNCE BACK
Ferguson believes lengthy injuries to Tom Anderson and Alfie Beestin didn’t help Rovers cause, with 12 minutes of time added on at the end of the match. He added: “Tom’s injury didn’t do us any favours, it gave us a problem because I knew that with him being down for so long, the crowd would get a lift when the board went up. “I don’t think we can have any complaints about the penalty, it’s the last 10 seconds of the game and we just needed to clear the ball out of play. “It’s important that we don’t let this affect us too much now, it’s a sore one for everyone at the football club but we need to go again and show a positive response.” Tickets for the home game against Bury on Saturday 3 March are available to purchase now at tickets.clubdoncaster.co.uk.

the Shakers. “It’s natural to be devastated after a result like that, nobody has seen it coming but we have to pick ourselves up now and look at the positives and the negatives and learn from it, you can’t dismiss it and we can move on to next week,” he added. “We will have to learn from this, you win some and you lose some, but we played the right way and we played well, we will always analyse it, and just like after the Walsall game we will react to it because we always react well to these sorts of defeats.” Tickets for the home game against Bury on Saturday 3 March are available to purchase now at tickets.clubdoncaster.co.uk.

A QUALITY MONTH FOR A QUALITY PLAYER The beginning of this week marks 50 years since United’s greatest-ever player, Tony Currie, made his debut for the Blades and caps a memorable few weeks as the Blades have honoured a club icon. Monday 26th Feb marked 50 years since United’s greatest-ever player, Tony Currie, made his debut for the Blades - and caps a memorable few weeks as the Blades have honoured a club icon. It was on this day in 1968 that Currie scored on his debut against Tottenham Hotspur - and the Blades have been marking the occasion in
a number of ways. A special event held at Bramall Lane, which the man himself later described as ‘the best night of his life’, was central to the celebrations. Former team-mates, including Mick Jones, Len Badger, Ted Hemsley, Allan Clarke and Keith Edwards, plus guests from the world of football and Tony’s family, as well as club directors and co-owner Kevin McCabe, attended a ‘quality night with a quality player’ as United marked the 50th anniversary of Currie’s association with the Blades in style. The night looked back
at Currie’s career and included interviews with the United legend as well as world-renowned football personalities such as legendary commentator John Motson - the man who, when covering United’s game with West Ham in March 1975, produced the famous line: “A quality goal, from a quality player” as Currie scored in front of the Kop. Other on-screen tributes included Joe Elliott, Glenn Roeder, Sean Bean, Paul Heaton and Alan Birchenall. And an emotional Currie, in a surprise phone call to BBC Radio Sheffield’s Praise
BLADES HUMBLED BY THE HUMBER A disappointing performance resulted in a narrow defeat for the Blades on Friday evening. United had a chance to climb back into the top six but a second half goal from Nouha Dicko gave Hull City victory in front of the Sky cameras. Fleck returned after suspension to take his place in midfield. He was one of two changes to the Blades team with Leonard also starting. Lundstram and Duffy dropped to the bench, where they were joined by Moore and Freeman, available again for the first time since October following a knee problem. On a cold night, the game’s first chance was created by the visitors but Blackman saved with his legs from Evandro and Dicko’s follow up could only find the side-netting. United’s first opportunity saw Fleck fire straight at goalkeeper McGregor. Larsson attempted to deceive with a free-kick but was off target, as was Dicko
after Evans was caught in possession. United’s only other chances of note in a poor first half saw Baldock’s shot saved and Fleck fire wide. The start to the second half was better in terms of tempo. Sharp got the better of Aina but his shot was saved by the legs of McGregor and the home side took the lead soon after. Blackman did well to push Dicko’s shot around a post but the goal came from the resulting corner. The left-wing delivery saw the ball bounce around the Blades box before squirting out to the unmarked DICKO to beat Blackman from close range. Hull went close again but Blackman was
well-placed to collect Dicko’s header from Aina’s cross and for the final half hour the Blades were the more offensive side, although without seriously testing the home backline. Stearman toppled in the area but no penalty was forthcoming and Lundstram headed wide a corner from fellow substitute Duffy. Late on, Hull, expectedly, slowed down the action at every opportunity and kept the ball professionally to prevent United gaining any forward momentum and the additional minutes saw McGregor untested.

or Grumble, reflected fondly on a memorable night. “It was such a fantastic evening, the best night of my life,” Currie told BBC Sheffield. “I just want to thank Sheffield United, Kevin McCabe especially but all the panel who did all the work organising the event. It was the best night ever and I want to thank everybody. “I’ve had such a time with Sheffield United - I was nervous and I was choked, but it was so well-organised and the remarks I got were unbelievable. The crowd and the people that were there loved every minute. It was
phenomenal. “The connection I have with Sheffield United isn’t just habit, it isn’t just from being here and working for the club all these years. Both myself and the club have had fantastic support throughout my time here. “The last year-and-a-half in particular, the Blades have been an absolute joy to watch. We’ve always been getting 17-20,000 but to get the almost 30,000 each week now, it’s great to see Bramall Lane full every week and the football we’re putting on caps it all. “I just want to say thank you to Sheffield United and to Sheffield United
supporters. It’s been my life, and I’m very proud. I love them to bits!” In addition to the special Bramall Lane event, a number of Currie’s other former clubs honoured their former player. Peter Lorimer, a teammate of Currie’s during his time at Leeds United, made a presentation on behalf of the Blades’ Yorkshire rivals ahead of the clubs’ Bramall Lane encounter, as did Queens Park Rangers legend Les Ferdinand, who presented Currie with a shirt signed by QPR players ahead of United’s game last week.
WILDER DOESN’T HOLD BACK Chris Wilder could not hide his emotions after Friday’s disappointing defeat at Hull City. He did not hold back when he spoke to the media afterwards, commenting: “We didn’t deserve anything from the game, the performance was not good enough and won’t be good enough for the top six. “The only two to come out of the game with any credit was the skipper (Billy Sharp) and Leon (Clarke) at the top of the pitch. Everything
else behind them was way off, every part of our game was well behind the standard that we have set.
“We’ve not shown the qualities needed to get in the play-offs; and this was a great opportunity.”

CLARE HAPPY WITH MAIDEN STRIKE
Young Owls midfielder Sean Clare said it was a ‘fantastic feeling’ to score his first Wednesday goal in the 4-2 defeat to Aston Villa at Hillsborough. Villa twice came from behind to grab all three points after Clare and Lucas Joao had put Wednesday 2-1 in front at half time. Despite being disappointed by the result, Clare was
delighted to get off the mark for the club. He said: “I’ve been here a couple of years now, I’ve watched a lot of games at Hillsborough, so to score today is a fantastic feeling. “I think throughout the game we played really well, we just need to tighten up a bit to get the wins that we need. “There’s a lot of positives that we can take out of the game but we also need to
look at the negatives to improve our allround game. “We played really well so it makes the result all the more disappointing. We just need to regroup and pick ourselves up to go again in the next game.” After spending part of the season on loan with Gillingham earlier in the campaign, Clare is happy to be back at Wednesday and involved in Jos
Luhukay’s first team plans. He added: “The manager has put trust in me to play me today and against Derby and hopefully he will continue to do that. “There’s a reason he puts trust in the young players, so we just have to believe in ourselves. “I’ve been happy with my performances over the past two games, but the results are the most important thing.”
2017/18 TAKING THE POSITIVES The Owls may have gone down 4-2 to Aston Villa but Jos Luhukay says the positives were plenty following a thrilling afternoon in S6. The visitors twice came from behind to claim victory but only after Wednesday put in a spirited showing, particularly in the first half. And on another day, Luhukay may well have been celebrating a win himself as his side spurned chances in front of goal. The Owls manager said: “We lost the game but I saw a lot of positive things today. We created a lot of chances against one of the sides fighting for the Premier League. “If we had taken the chances we created, we would have won the game. We hit the post twice, once in each half, and I do not think the luck was with us today. “I think the way the corner fell to their player to score the third goal was lucky for Aston Villa and the penalty was just a statistic at the end,
it did not affect the game. “So I think the scoreline did not do justice to this game – we were much better than the score suggests. “But for us, we must take our chances and we must defend better.” Luhukay also revealed another injury blow with news that Ross Wallace is likely to miss the remainder of the campaign. The midfielder has a knee problem and Luhukay said: “Ross felt his knee in the last game and we are waiting for the doctors to say if he needs surgery or not. “But he will be out for some weeks and I think he will be missing the rest of the season.”
