GREY TO GREEN BLOOMING INTO CASTLEGATE Sheffield City Council has launched a consultation into the second phase of the scheme, which has seen the city’s former inner ring road transformed into a green corridor that is also home to the country’s largest sustainable urban drainage system. Phase One was designed by a team of Council designers, supported by Professor Nigel Dunnett from the University of Sheffield’s Landscape Department. This work could now be extended beyond West Bar towards Castlegate, Lady’s Bridge, the River Don and Kelham,
has already scooped a wheelbarrow of awards, such as the National Green Champion at the International Green Apple Awards and the Eric Hughes Award for Outstanding Contribution to Improving Sustainability. Closer to home, the project also won Best Open Space and overall Outstanding’ project awards at the Sheffield Design Awards in late 2016. Grey to Green Two proposes to make Castlegate and Exchange Street a location for new investment and a home for cutting-edge businesses as well as encouraging
additional city centre living. With funding from Sheffield City Region and Sheffield City Council, the project will incorporate colourful meadows, trees and a sustainable drainage system which reduces flooding risk. It will also improve and link up walking and cycling routes which should enhance the experience of visiting, living and working in the area as well as providing a setting for new development opportunities in the area and supporting existing businesses and civic buildings as part of the wider Castlegate Kickstart Programme.
A University of Sheffield visualisation of how the next phase of Grey To Green will look A University of Sheffield visualisation of how the next phase of Grey To Green will look Grey to Green Phase 1 between West Bar Green and Lady’s Bridge was completed in 2016 and has been successful in attracting new investment to the area. Phase two will start in early 2019 with completion expected by the end of the year. Among plans for the consultation are the closure of Castlegate to vehicles, except for loading, a proposed bus gate on Blonk Street, an
environmental weight restriction on Exchange Place between Furnival Road and Blonk Street and revised access arrangements on Castle Street and Waingate. The consultation finishes on Friday 23 March. The council is hosting drop in sessions on Tuesday 6 March from 11am to 2pm and Wednesday 7 March from 4pm to 7pm at OVO Spaces, Terminal Warehouse Two, Wharf Street, Victoria Quays, Sheffield, S2 5SY. MAJOR INVESTMENT SET TO BOOST DONCASTER Plans which will see £349million invested in projects across Doncaster over the next four years were approved by Full Council last week. The projects approved in the Council’s Capital Budget aim to stimulate economic growth and job creation, as well as improve housing, roads, schools, leisure facilities and living conditions for tenants and vulnerable residents. Speaking about her capital budget proposals, Mayor Ros Jones said: “People are well aware of the government’s
austerity cuts to our revenue budget. This has vastly reduced the money we have to spend on the day to day costs of running essential public services. However, these unfair cuts will not stop us from delivering our vital capital programme schemes, which continue to invest in the borough and our future. “We have millions of pounds worth of investment lined up for a range of projects that will help transform our economy and provide more opportunities and better services for local people. What’s more,
residents are going to see significant progress on many of these schemes this year. “Our Urban Centre Masterplan is starting to revitalise Doncaster town centre, with the redevelopment of the historic Wool Market at Doncaster market now underway. Improvements to the railway station area will step up a gear this year, creating a great first impression of Doncaster and encouraging new investment in the town centre. I also expect construction of our new central library, museum, art gallery to start this
year at the former Girls’ School site, and we are developing plans to turn Silver Street and Hallgate into Quality Streets, which support our ambitious town centre regeneration plans. “This bold innovative approach is designed to make a real difference for all. Investing in schemes like the Herten Triangle development at Lakeside will create new jobs, improve our leisure offer and increase choice for residents. It will also provide the council with additional income from rents and business rates, helping
to offset the impact of the Government cuts. This development will also start shortly and is further evidence of our transformational plans coming to fruition. “Much of this money has been secured through our work with external funding bodies and similar investment in recent years is already paying dividends. Look at the growth created from Great Yorkshire Way and the new National College for High Speed Rail, which is supporting our expanding rail sector. Being forward thinking and investing
in Doncaster’s future is having a major beneficial impact, and the second phase of our airport link road will also open this year. “This capital programme is about more than just our future though. It will see real improvements for people straight away, including thousands of home adaptations to support the elderly and disabled, and improvements to our roads and street lighting. We’ll also be building more new Council houses and investing in our school buildings. “These are the building
blocks for sustained economic growth and prosperity and a future we can be proud of and look forward to.” The budget supports a raft of schemes. It includes £13.9million for the Doncaster Culture and Learning Centre which will see the central library, museum, art gallery and other social and learning facilities combined in one modern building on the former Girls’ School site in Waterdale. This will complement the existing offerings in the Civic and Cultural Quarter. Full Council also
approved the revenue budget which pays for public services. This will see the council fill a £44.4million budget gap over the next three financial years. As part of these proposals, council tax will go up by 3.99% for the next financial year which is in fact the lowest rise in South Yorkshire. This has been achieved by innovative and prudent financial planning and means the council is in a stronger position than many other local authorities to deliver a fair and balanced budget.

BEIGHTON TOP CLUB BRINGS NEW LEASE OF LIFE TO CLUBLAND
It’s been an ever increasing sight over the past few years, a working men’s club closes its doors for the last time, and soon after, is demolished and a block of flats takes its place. This is something that threatened the club I have frequented for the majority of my life, from visiting with my dad as a kid, to going for a quiet pint after work in more recent times. After Beighton Social Club was liquidated, there was an air of sadness all around the village, which made us all realise how important the club was within the community. It brought friends and relatives together in a place that offered something for everyone. Whether it was the bingo, the live entertainment or
just somewhere they could go for a catch up and a drink or two. It was heart breaking seeing the doors close for the last time, a place responsible for some of my fondest memories, it just didn’t seem real. I and a few other members decided that we couldn’t let such a loved place disappear from village life, so we decided we would attempt to set up a brand new club. We never realised how much of a difficult task this would be, a new working men’s club opening up is practically unheard of, but with assistance from the CIU, and many hours work between us, we’re on the brink of opening the doors to our much loved club once again under the name of Beighton Top Club (a name fondly used to describe the club by locals for decades). Beighton Top Club will still have all the traits of a traditional working men’s club, but with a modern twist to encourage families and future generations to enjoy the place that’s been the centre of village life for many years, and hopefully many more to come.

From painting a community hall and raising funds for the elderly to helping a food bank collection and clearing a river– Sheffield employees working for council contractor, Amey, are making their mark in more ways than one, in communities across the city. Throughout the UK, Amey encourages its staff to use one paid day per year to support a community initiative of their choice – one that generates environmental, educational or employment benefits. Random Act of Kindness Day is a national initiative taking place throughout February, but in Sheffield, over the past year, Amey employees have rolled

up their sleeves to engage in a number of projects including: • Heeley City Farm – painting a community hall, renovating a tractor and improving disabled access; • Burncross Action Team – helping to clear debris and plant greenery; • River Stewardship Company – removing invasive Himalayan balsam, litter, debris and silt from the River Don; • Rotherham and Sheffield Wildlife Trust – helping to clear scrub on heathland at Wyming Brook Nature Reserve; • AgeUK Sheffield – Raising money through a raffle, cake sale and quiz for Amey’s local Charity of the Year. • Trussell Trust food bank collections – collecting food donations for residents in the Burngreave area; Working in Sheffield at the heart of the £2.2bn 25year Streets Ahead programme to resurface roads and pavements, repair bridges and replace street lighting on behalf of the city council – Amey workers will continue their volunteering over the next year. Cabinet member for Environment and Street Scene at Sheffield City Council, Councillor Bryan Lodge said: “It’s fantastic to see Amey employees dedicat-
ing their time to supporting local communities. “There’s lots of charitable work going on in Sheffield and we’re proud that our contractors are taking an active role in various projects, using the skills and expertise that they require for their day jobs. “A little can go a long way and, in some cases, projects that previously didn’t have the resource, have now been completed to a high standard, thanks to Amey’s dedication.” In November, a team of employees painted a community hall at Heeley City Farm. The room is used for a range of activities such as cooking and baking, drumming for adults with disabilities and a communal area for local children. Julie Blacker from Heeley City Farm said Amey workers had done “such a great job. The space looks so much cleaner and brighter. It’s amazing and I can’t thank you all enough for all of your hard work.” With 19,000 employees across the country and 608 based in Sheffield, the company’s community engagement adds up to more than 160,000 hours of community volunteering for the benefits of UK charities and other not-for-profit organisations. HOW TO AVOID THE PENSION SCAMMERS ARE YOU A CARER? Pension scams are a worrying problem and says they can help you access your and are costing savers millions of pounds. The government has announced a ban on pensions cold calling. No legitimate pension or investment firm will ever cold call you about releasing cash from your pension, accessing it before you are 55 or extra tax savings, so alarm bells should ring if they do. A pension scam – when someone tries to con you out of your pension money – will often start by someone contacting you unexpectedly about: • An investment or other business opportunity that you’ve not spoken to them about before. • Taking your pension money before you’re 55 • The ways that you can invest your pension money If someone contacts you unexpectedly

Most of these offers are fake but can appear very convincing. Their aim is to get you to cash in your pension pot and transfer the money. Once you’ve transferred your money into a scam, it’s too late. You could lose all your pension money as well as face tax of up to 55% or huge additional fees. Did You know - as a carer, you may be able to reduce the amount of Council Tax (CT) you pay? SPECIAL OLYMPICS PROVIDES HUGE ECONOMIC IMPACT TO SHEFFIELD An independent report and research conducted by Sheffield Hallam University shows that Sheffield received an economic boost of over £3million during August last year due to Special Olympics GB’s National Games taking place in the city. The Games – held every four years – was the biggest disability multi-sports event in the country in 2017, with 2,600 athletes with learning disabilities from
across England, Scotland and Wales taking part in 20 different sports across a dozen South Yorkshire venues. The event kicked off with a spectacular Opening Ceremony at Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane stadium on Tuesday 8 August 2017, followed by four days of thrilling and uplifting sporting action. Councillor Mary Lea, cabinet member for culture, parks and leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “We were thrilled to host the Special Olympics National Games last summer and it’s great that this research reflects the positive financial impact that the athletes, their families, the spectators and the media attention had on Sheffield. I’d like to thank everyone involved for making the event such a huge success.”

further £0.29m of the impact on Sheffield. Feedback from spectators was also very positive. Among the local people who were interviewed, each felt a sense of pride that Sheffield was hosting the Games. The majority felt that the Games made a positive difference to how they felt about living in the city and that the Games had brought the local community together. The majority of visitors from outside Sheffield felt that their visit to the Games had enhanced their image of the city and they were more likely to recommend Sheffield as a place to visit. The scale of the estimated economic impact, the pride expressed by local spectators and the positive perceptions about the event bodes well for both the future of the Special Olympics GB National Games and major events in Sheffield. Chris Hull, spokesperson for Special Olympics GB, said: “We greatly value this report and the key findings that Special Olympics GB and our 2,600 athletes with learning disabilities competing at our National Games provided an additional stimulus to the city of Sheffield in excess of £3 million. “This is great news for potential future hosting cities. Not only can Special Olympics and our athletes provide events which are packed with the very best of human achievement and endeavour but they also give regions around the country a huge boost of energy, pride, inclusion and finance.”

Richard Coleman, principal researcher of the Sport Industry Research Centre at Sheffield Hallam University, said: ”An economic impact on Sheffield of £3.28m vindicates the decision to bring the Special Olympics GB National Games back to the city and is testament to the desire, time and resources committed by national and local agencies in delivering a wonderful sporting spectacle and celebration of the human spirit.” Sheffield boxing legend and Special Olympics ambassador Kell Brook said: “I was thrilled to be a Games ambassador for the event and I am delighted it has had such an impact on the city and so many people’s lives.” The direct economic impact of the Games was measured in terms of the amount of new money that flows into the Sheffield economy that is attributable to the event. The direct economic impact on Sheffield was estimated at £3.28m. More than 7,500 (of the estimated 9,200 different) spectators were visiting from outside the city and accounted for half of the impact (£1.65m). Visiting athletes, coaches and other attendee groups collectively generated a further £1.31m (40%), and net organisational expenditure in Sheffield contributed the remaining £0.31m (10%). Accommodation (£1.67m) and food & beverage (£0.7m) were responsible for the majority of visitor spending in the city, whilst shopping accounted for a

EXCHANGE STREET COLLECTIVE CALL ON CREATIVES TO HELP WITH CASTLEGATE REGENERATION STREET PARTY Sheffield’s Exchange Street will be home to a ‘community based street-party’, and organisers are looking for promoters, creatives, artists and residents to be a part of it The Exchange Street Collective group have put a call out for ‘people and organisations to get involved with the promoting, running, programming and performing at a new day party in Sheffield’, under the working title Castlegate Escapes. The free event will take place on 8 June 2018 and will be funded, in part, by an initiative to regenerate the Castlegate area of the city
centre. The Exchange Street Collective, comprised of NLR - Nice Like Rice, Plot 22, RiteTrax, Delicious Clam Records and Bal Fashions, are a group of creatives and independents at the heart of the regeneration in the area and plan to put on a day of events, food and music from Sheffield’s alt. scenes. Owner of Bal Fashions and Thrifty Store Bally Johal said: “The point of Exchange Street Collective is the alternative music scene and entertainment scene. It’s a real shining beacon for the alt. scene. “So it’s about escaping the drudgery, for the people who might not want to go to Weatherspoon’s or other chains.” So, if you had in your head a bunting filled, safe, Jubilee-type affair you might at this point be disappointed, but trust us this sounds like it’s going to be a whole lot better than that! If you want to get involved contact Steve MacKay or Thomas Michael on Facebook. If not, get the date popped in your diary. It’s gonna be a big one!
LIVE REVIEW: STONE BROKEN AT THE CORP Getting feet on the music ladder is challenging at the best of times but Walsall gang Stone Broken are making a decent fist of it as their reasonable full Sheffield show, part of their latest British tour, has been well-received. With two supports, namely The Bad Flowers and Jared James Nichols, Walsall’s latest export kicked off with Heartbreak Away, Better and Stay All Night. It’s good to see the new kids on the block as this tight foursome comprising Rich Moss guitar and vocals, Chris Davis guitar, Kieron Conroy on bass and one of the finest female drummers I’ve seen in a while Robyn Haycock, really did hit the boards running and as a band clicked into place well. With their 2016 debut album All In Time and recently released second effort Ain’t Always Easy, Stone Broken have developed a strong collection of songs, many of which were cherry-picked for this tour. Although production and lights were kept low to preserve costs that didn’t dampen the show and with
some well-chosen between song speeches as a punter you did feel part of the experience. With a short but precise drum solo from Robyn, a couple more foot tappers, the song that first got the band attention Not Your Enemy closed the night on a high. Having only just had Stone Broken on my radar this Sheffield show has been a refreshing change as not once did frontman Rich Moss swear, none of the band had visible tattoos, or had any anger issues. They genuinely seemed grateful for what’s been achieved so far and collectively this British unit are working very hard to develop their career with more supports and festivals planned for 2018. And that my friends really is set in stone.

TAX THE HEAT RELEASE NEW ALBUM AHEAD OF FOUNDRY LIVE SHOW Nuclear Blast Entertainment are pleased to announce the release of the forthcoming new album from Tax The Heat, “Change Your Position”, on 9th March 2018. The album will be available as CD, Digital, Limited Edition Gatefold Vinyl and Limited Edition Light Blue Vinyl. “Change Your Position” is the follow up to the 2016 criticallyacclaimed debut album “Fed To The Lions”. The new album sees the band take a huge step forward as both songwriters and performers. The band’s unique blend of fuzz-driven rock with a modern alternative twist has won them a legion of fans. The album stamps its authority right from the off with the taut “Money In the Bank” (also the first single). From the staccato stomp of
“Playing With Fire” to the huge riffs of “Cut Your Chains”, from the garage rock of “On The Run” to the slow groove and instant lyrical hit of “All That Medicine”. “Change Your Position” is a lean, focused album loaded with an energy that is set to propel the band to headline status. The driving rhythms of Jack Taylor (Drums) and Antonio Angotti (Bass) are overlaid with the powerful riffs of JP Jacyshyn (Guitars) and distinctive melodies of Alex Veale (Vocals, Guitars). From humble beginnings in 2015, Tax The Heat have become one of the most notable of new British rock acts. Multiple singles playlisted across radio in both 2015 and 2016 – taken from debut album “Fed To The Lions”. The band also honed their live craft supporting the likes Cadillac 3, Reef, The Graveltones, Black Star Riders, Masters Of Reality, Virginmarys and Thunder and festival appearances such as 2000 Trees, Download, Calling and Ramblin’ Man Fair. So, do yourself a favour and check them out when they hit Sheffield’s Foundry on Thursday April 19th as part of their latest British tour. Further details are on the band’s website.

This special installment of Tramlines comes with more festivalstyle entertainment than ever over four stages including a comedy lineup, pop up cinema, family area, and a brand new
Leadmill Stage. The whole of Sheffield will be in party mode when they come together for this momentous version of Tramlines. The first announcement saw Stereophonics, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Craig David’s TS5, Blossoms, De La Soul, Jake Bugg, Reverend and The Makers, Stefflon Don, The Sherlocks, Mabel, The Magic Gang, Coasts, Pale Waves, Gengahr, Naaz, Mullally, and Stereo Honey all announced. With today’s announcement plus many more to come, Tramlines stays true to its roots of showcasing the internationally acclaimed alongside the hottest breaking talent. It also remains seriously good value for money. Whilst tickets are selling out fast, weekend tickets now cost £69 plus booking fee and are available from www.tramlines. org.uk. Headlining Stage 2 on Saturday are multi-million record selling chart toppers, Clean Bandit. Few acts have risen through the ranks as quickly as this threepiece, mixing dance music with classical in rousing new ways. From hits like ‘Rather Be’ to ‘Rockabye’ to ‘Symphony’, their crossover style is a favourite at festivals around the world and guaranteed to be a winner at Tramlines. Tramlines is thrilled to announce that the Mystery Jets will
headline the Leadmill Stage on Friday night. The standout British band whose fusion of indie rock, post-punk, psychedelia and prog has made them firm favourites over the course of six albums and more recent singles like ‘Bubblegum’ as well as classics such as ‘The Boy Who Ran Away.’ Then headlining the Leadmill Stage on Saturday are livewires Rat Boy who’ll be bringing more than just guitar music to Tramlines with their raucous live show and on-stage chemistry. Expect tracks from their debut album ‘Scum’ that the band brought to fruition with a little help from Blurs’ Damon Albarn and Graham Coxon. Back to the festival opening on Friday, experimental Manchester outfit, Everything Everything, will now join Stereophonics on the Main Stage. Coming off the back of their biggest and best album yet in 2017’s ‘A Fever Dream’, which was shortlisted for the Mercury Music Prize and received three nominations for the Ivor Novello Award, the band are set to put on a dynamic and energetic show at Tramlines. Also amongst the latest additions are local heroes Milburn in a notto-be-missed appearance. Since reforming a couple of years back, the band have enjoyed an incredible couple of years, and have told festival organisers that this will be their “last show for a
long time”! Support comes from indie innovators, The Big Moon, who return to Tramlines after a killer performance in 2017. Influential live outfit Shed Seven will play Stage 2 on Sunday and will demonstrate just why they helped shape the sound of Britpop in the 90’s. Just last year, the York outfit continued to lead from the front with their Top 10 album ‘Instant Pleasures’, which mixed melancholy with uplifting albums to great acclaim. Completing this latest wave of names are emerging talents,
Nina Nesbitt, Lewis Capaldi, Fickle Friends, High Hazels, and Oddity Road. Each embodying a unique sound and youthful energy, they are just some of the acts who are set to make a well-deserved mark on the scene in 2018. As one of UK’s most popular inner-city music festivals, Tramlines’ new home is just 13 minutes from the city centre by tram, meaning it stays connected to the plethora of fringe activities happening all over town. The tenth Tramlines has an expanded
site to host even more music lovers and to offer a wider range of world class and new talent performances alongside more great entertainment than ever before.
With more acts yet to be announced for the 10th year, follow Tramlines on social to get the latest updates as they happen. Follow Tramlines on social ‘@tramlines’ or visit www. tramlines.org.uk.

FRINGE PROGRAMME ANNOUNCED FOR WEEKEND OF ADVENTURE With just days until The Outdoor City Weekender comes to venues across Sheffield, an exciting fringe programme has been announced. Now in its third year, the Weekender continues to grow year on year and with it comes a host of additional events and activities for people to try out whilst they soak up the atmosphere over the weekend of 9 to 11 March. This year, in addition to the four headline events – Sheffield Adventure Film Festival (ShAFF), Climbing Works International Festival (CWIF), Howard Street Dual and The Magnificent Seven – is the strongest fringe programme yet. From orienteering cycling challenges and night runs to yoga in Sheffield’s iconic Winter Garden – and much more – the
fringe showcases the strength and breadth of Sheffield’s outdoor community. Councillor Mazher Iqbal, cabinet member for business and investment at Sheffield City Council, said: “Sheffield is the UK’s leading destination for people seeking outdoor adventure, city culture and rural escapes. And it’s all on our doorstep! “The Outdoor City Weekender fringe is a great opportunity for people to come out, try something new and be part of the weekend. “The fringe highlights that in The Outdoor City there is something for everyone. So as well as the big focus on high octane activities, there are quieter and more relaxed activities too, so you can find something that suits you, regardless of age or ability. “The fringe programme exists because people
are keen to share the Weekender buzz. Together, these events create something really special for residents and those visiting the city.” The Weekender fringe kicks off on Friday 9 March. A key highlight, taking place over the entire weekend, is The Big Running Weekend at Ecclesall Woods. Organised by WoodRun in association with independent running store Accelerate, this family event features a multitude of running activities that cater for juniors, beginners and experienced runners. It includes led-runs, workshops, talks and coaching sessions to help you improve your technique and a chance to test exclusive shoes and kit. Keen runners can also take part in the Hill Sprint or the Big Running Weekend Challenge, which
covers a maximum of 47km from Friday evening through to Sunday afternoon and incorporates three of The Outdoor City Run Routes. In the city centre, Unity Yoga Sheffield will be hosting a special evening session in the Winter Garden on Friday. It’s the perfect way to wind down and limber up before a weekend of actionpacked adventures. At 6pm, join BMC ambassador Mary-Ann Ochota and the Mend Our Mountains team as they celebrate the launch of Mend Our Mountains: Make One Million. The campaign aims to raise £1million for a range of vital path repair projects in Britain’s national parks, including the Peak District. After drinks and nibbles, the action moves to the main screen in the Showroom Cinema,

LIVE EVENTS AT THE PARAMOUNT
These two warring rag-and-bone-men, in their Shepherd’s Bush scrapyard home, became household favourites for entire generations throughout the 60s and 70s and still they continue to entertain audiences today. Now it’s time to relive some of their finest misadventures through this brand new production. Marking fifty-five years since the show’s first ever broadcast, Hambledon Productions (Hancock’s Half Hour – The Lost Episodes, Educating Rita, Just Like That! The Tommy Cooper Show) breathe life back into the Steptoe household with this faithful, fresh and hilarious adaptation .
SUNDAY 11TH MARCH 2018 from 2:30pm TICKETS £12.00 Adult • £10.00 Concession

where comedian Niall Grimes and Mary-Ann will present ShAFF’s mountain film session. A night run for two sets of abilities, organised by ShAFF, Up & Running and Alpkit, will also set off at 7.30pm from The Workstation. They will take in green spaces near the city centre before returning to The Showroom just in time for a selection of ShAFF running films. On Saturday 10 March, the Polaris Sporteering Cycle Challenge is open from 9.30am to 2pm. From a base at the Peace Gardens, participants plan their own route to find the most effective way of collecting points around Sheffield. Also in the Peace Gardens, British Cycling will also be holding cycling activities for young bike enthusiasts aged 6-18 years. Between 1pm and 3pm, head over to The Showroom Cinema and take on the South Yorkshire Orienteering challenge to find as many controls as you can around the streets,
alleys and open spaces of the city centre in just 45 minutes. This is a great opportunity to try out a new urban adventure. On Sunday 11 March, Trail Advantage is holding two mountain bike skills training sessions at Lady Canning’s with qualified British Cycling MTB coach Adam Simmonite. Also on site will be Cotic with their demo day, a fantastic opportunity to test multiple bikes back to back. Those who prefer a more relaxed pace can join the Sheffield Access Trail walking tour at 10.30am. This fascinating 90-minute walk is led by the chair of Sheffield Ramblers, Terry Howard, and follows a route from Weston Park Museum to the Town Hall. Along the way, walkers will discover the people, places and events that played a significant part in the national Right to Roam Act, which gives the general public the conditional right
to walk in areas of the countryside. GoodGym then wraps up the Weekender fringe on Sunday evening at 5pm. This innovative 90-minute session combines a friendly 5k run from the Showroom with turning the Abbeydale Picture House Car Park into a more beautiful, useable space. All of these activities will be taking place alongside the four headline events. ShAFF, which runs over all three days of the Weekender, features films based on all sorts of adventure sports. Films will be shown at the Showroom Cinema and the ShAFF cinema truck, which will be parked outside Sheffield train station. The Rab CWIF, taking place at the Climbing Works on 10 and 11 March, attracts around 450 climbers, including professionals from around the world, who compete alongside amateurs of all ages and abilities. The Howard Street Dual
will be held on Saturday 10 March. Invited riders will race head to head down a short course, descending along grassy and gritty slopes from Hallam Square towards the railway station. It will also be live streamed on The Outdoor City website for the first time (http:// theoutdoorcity.co.uk/ howard-street-dual/) enabling a wider – and potentially international – audience to watch this unique event. And on the Sunday, The Magnificent Seven, a cross between a sportive and a hill climb, follows a 26-mile-long route through Sheffield with inclines ranging from 9 to 23 per cent, including the Cote de Bradfield. People can share their Weekender experiences on social media using the hashtag #TheOutdoorCity. Full details of The Outdoor City Weekender, including the packed fringe programme, can be found at www. theoutdoorcity.co.uk.

DIESEL DRIVERS HIT HARD BY EXTREME WEATHER AS BLOCKED FILTERS CAUSE BREAKDOWNS
Diesel drivers have faced an ‘unexpected and unwelcome’ problem as freezing temperatures have increased the number of breakdowns due to ‘waxing’. ‘Waxing’ causes diesel vehicle fuel filters to become clogged by a gel-like substance during colder conditions, which starves the engine of fuel and can cause the vehicle to lose power or fail to start completely. According to RAC breakdown data the effects of ‘waxing’ were widely felt across the country as Storm Emma hit last week, with 500 vehicles requiring assistance. The organisation reported 5% of the 9,600 callouts they attended were due to ‘waxing’ in diesel filters – 44% more than usual for this time of year. RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said: “The RAC last saw issues with diesel ‘waxing’, as it is known, predominantly in the east of the UK in the very cold weather of late 2013, and to a lesser extent in periods of really cold weather since then. This should not occur, as all diesel produced for UK winter use is formulated with additives to prevent waxing. In addition, modern diesel vehicles are fitted with heating elements on the fuel delivery lines to prevent waxing occurring.

“We are, however, aware that some vehicles’ fuel lines are more exposed than others which can exacerbate waxing issues.” Unfortunately, there is currently no way to stop ‘waxing’ from affecting diesel vehicles, although there are some precautionary measures which can be taken to help reduce the likelihood of cars being affected. The organisation advises storing diesel vehicles in garages and making sure their filters are up to scratch with industry standards. Mr Williams said: “Frustratingly for motorists, however, there is still no solution to this problem. The most likely explanation appears to be that there are a combination of factors at play involving the diesel itself, its bio content, and the way vehicles move the fuel around their systems. “There is nothing diesel car drivers can do to prevent the problem from occurring, other than getting their vehicles’ fuel filter changed in line manufacturer guidelines and keeping their car in a garage if they can. Even then, this may not stop a problem happening out on the road.” The RAC assured drivers it is currently working with other “breakdown service providers, motor manufacturers and representatives from the fuel industry” to help solve the issue and minimise the impact of cold weather spells on diesel drivers. Mr Williams said: “As a member of the working group set up across the industry to get to the bottom of this issue, the RAC is working hard to amass and analyse its breakdown data to help find a solution.”

In-form winger Anthony Forde is understandably enjoying his football and his recent performances have seen him become a mainstay in Paul Warne’s side, playing a pivotal role in the club’s superb 14 game unbeaten run. The Irishman, who has jostled for position on the flanks with the likes of Jon Taylor, Ryan Williams and Joe Newell since the season began, has cemented his place in the side in recent weeks with a number of industrious showings which have also allowed him to display great technical ability in opposition territory. The former Walsall and Wolves midfielder believes everyone within the camp is profiting from the spirit engulfing the players at the club’s training base at Roundwood, crediting Millers boss Paul Warne for the mood at the club. “The manager has been brilliant. He gives you confidence all the time and backs everyone up,” Forde explained. “There is not one person in the team that doesn’t get on with the next person. It is a really good group and you need that to be successful. The staff, coaches, everyone at the club - they have been really helpful and that shows on the pitch. “I am enjoying my football at the moment. The run of games I have been getting recently has been great for me. Playing in a good side, playing with confidence and winning games - it can’t get any better than that. It has been a great feeling. I’d say it is the best form I have shown. We have played a lot of games recently, your match sharpness comes back, and from that I feel more confident. I feel really good at the moment.
“I was in and out of the team at the start of the season. I think after the Blackpool game, which was a massive win for us, the team didn’t change too much. It has become settled, but then when the subs have come on, they have been brilliant. That makes a huge impact on the games as well. The team not changing too much, and then finding some consistency, that has really helped.” Forde continued to explain that the Millers are emulating and exceeding the form shown by his teammates during his time at the Banks’s Stadium which saw the Saddlers claim a place in the Playoffs, but insists the foot will remain on the gas between now and the final game of the season. “Two years ago when I was at Walsall, we were in and around the top three for most of the season,” he continued. “Even then we didn’t go on as good a run as this. At the moment it feels great, but there are still games to go so we will take it as it comes. We are adjusted well in games and how teams play and that’s credit to the staff as well for preparing us well for games. We don’t just turn up and play, they get us ready properly. “We have to just keep winning games. It is getting really tight, and you don’t know where it might take you. Cementing a play-off place is the aim, but if

Amidst fears that the departures of club captain Lee Frecklington and top scorer Kieffer Moore could cause the Millers to be knocked out of their stride, the 24-year-old also took time to hail the January arrival of Michael Smith, who he believes has been an excellent replacement. “We lost Kieffer and Frecks and they were two big players for us,” he admitted. “We had some new faces come in and they have done really well. Michael Smith has come in and he has been brilliant for us. He has played to a very high standard in every game he has played so far. With those two leaving, it hasn’t really affected us so far because of the impact of the guys coming in. “We have maybe got better because they came in during a time when confidence was high and we were winning games. Kieffer was on fire when he was here, we didn’t want to lose him but it happened, but we dealt with it really well and we are fine so we will keep doing what we are doing.”

WARNE PRAISE FOR ‘HUGE’ TRAINING EFFORT
Manager Paul Warne praised the ‘huge effort’ all round after staff worked round the clock to ensure that training went ahead as planned at Roundwood last week. The recent heavy snowfall resulted in the Millers’ League One campaign being put on ice for seven days, but that didn’t stop the first-team training today, as ground and coaching staff came together to clear snow from a section of the Roundwood playing surface. After the trip to Gillingham was one of several games to fall victim to the arctic conditions, Warne brought his troops together this morning, before handing them some key down time before work resumes as normal on Monday. “The conditions are bad but we decided to try and cover an area of the training ground off to see if we could train,” Warne told www.themillers.co.uk “The majority of the lads have managed to get in today, so credit to them for showing the willing and credit to all the ground staff and everyone else who worked so hard to clear the snow. It was huge effort. “We have worked them hard for an hour and a half and it was a good session. It might be cold but it isn’t if you run around, and the lads have trained hard and got something out of the day. “We had the odd snowball flying around, but it was good fun before we got down to the serious stuff. We’ve spoken about the spirit at length before, but today the atmosphere was great. “The lads have really worked hard today and earned some down time now over the weekend. They can go away and spend some time with their families and then we come back Monday and we work hard again for the next game.” A new date is still to be confirmed for the pilgrimage to Priestfield, with the Millers next in action at home to Rochdale on March 10th.
FERGUSON PRAISES SQUAD’S RESILIENCE Manager Darren Ferguson has praised his squads’ resilience as the side continues to battle against injuries. During the course of the 2017/18 season, Rovers have had to contest with 40 injuries, and Ferguson is looking forward to welcoming key players back into his squad. “It’s not like they have been one week injuries either, they have been six-weeks minimum, but we have to get on with it and luckily we are starting to welcome players back into the squad,” he said. “Andy Butler, Joe Wright and Mathieu Baudry
are all back, you can add Andy Williams into that list as well, so I am sure that we will be fine going forward. “The muscle injuries that we have had this season have been quite minimal actually, it is certainly been annoying that is for sure and over the last two years it has been a really unlucky spell.”
KIWOMYA PARTNERSHIP STRONG
He said: “Having Alex back and available has changed the look of the front three, Alfie Beestin had started playing a bit deeper before his injury and we’ve made a couple of changes recently. “He is bringing something fresh to the side, he’s added a new dynamic to what we’ve had before this season and his pace means that he can give a lot for us. “Alex has been in training for a while since his injury, so we’ve had a fair bit of time for us to get used to each other and we’ve worked on the strengths and weaknesses as a pair.” Tickets for the game against Bradford City on Monday March 19 at the Keepmoat Stadium are available from tickets.clubdoncaster.co.uk.
John Marquis is enjoying playing alongside Alex Kiwomya as they look to continue their positive start as a strike pairing. The duo have only started two games together so far, but have already managed a goal and an assist each over the course of the past couple of Sky Bet League One fixtures.

PARKHOUSE RECOGNISED 2017/18 The on and off the pitch achievements of 11 young footballers has been recognised by League Football Education (LFE), including those of United striker David Parkhouse. ‘The 11’ acknowledges the football and academic progress of Under-18 players on apprenticeships at current or former English Football League (EFL) clubs and is also designed to assess other factors including involvement in community or charity-based initiatives. This accolade celebrates the holistic development
of young players, a barometer which is also applied to the LFE Apprentice of the Year Awards presented at The EFL Awards dinner in April. England Under-20 World Cup winners Ademola Lookman (formerly Charlton Athletic), Dael Fry (Middlesbrough), Dominic CalvertLewin (formerly Sheffield United) and Lewis Cook (formerly Leeds United) have all previously been named in ‘The 11’. Everton forward Lookman and AFC Bournemouth midfielder Cook also went on to become Apprentice of the Year winners.
Others to previously feature in this select group include Ryan Sessegnon (Fulham), Conor Chaplin (Portsmouth) and James Justin (Luton Town). The 11 - February 2018 • Roy Syla (Barnet) • Matthew Wolfe (Barnsley) • Sam Squire (Cambridge United) • Ryan Schofield (Huddersfield Town) • Toby Stevenson (Leyton Orient) • Harry Bircumshaw (Mansfield Town) • Momodou Touray (Newport County) • Alfie Payne (Norwich City) • Tom Hamer (Oldham Athletic) • David Parkhouse
(Sheffield United) • Alex Hunt (Sheffield Wednesday)
LFE chief executive Alan Sykes added: “The 11 is directly associated with apprentice reviews
that are conducted by our regional officer’s throughout the season. It is a great way to highlight the achievements and progression of talented young footballers who apply themselves to
all aspects of their apprenticeship.” For in-depth profiles on all of the players named in ‘The 11’ for February, please visit the LFE website.
U23S LOSE YORKSHIRE CLASH Tyler Smith's Bramall Lane strike was not enough to rescue a point against Huddersfield. Kieron Freeman played 90 minutes, but United's U23s slipped to a first defeat in five matches on Monday afternoon. Lewis O'Brien snatched the points for Huddersfield late on at Bramall Lane, as the Terriers came from behind to claim the spoils, after Tyler Smith had given the Blades a first-half lead. The first opportunity of the game came just after 20 minutes as Booty slipped in O'Brien but Eastwood made himself big and saved to keep the scores level.
United responded in the best possible fashion, going ahead on 25 minutes as a defensive mixup from the Terriers saw SMITH go through and poke past Coleman to put the Blades in the ascendancy. Eastwood would be called into action again in the latter stages of the firsthalf denying Sabiri after a slip from Freeman. The last noteworthy action of the opening period saw Eastwood make another big save denying O'Brien who beat the offside trap down the right channel. Shortly after the interval Sabiri tried his luck with a low strike but Eastwood saved smartly down low to his left.
But the visitors levelled 10 minutes later as O'Brien swung in a cross from the right and SABIRI nodded home from seven yards out. And it Huddersfield who snatched a late winner on 89 minutes as O'BRIEN picked up the ball, cut inside on to his left foot and fired home from 20 yards to give the WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH Terriers all three Chris Wilder was the right team from points. in reflective mood a very strong group after his enforced of players. He added: “We wanted to play on Saturday and I was sitting at a game think we should be playing, but we weren’t. The weather in the area has been pretty poor and we made a decision as a football club to postpone Saturday’s game on Thursday.
