GEARING UP FOR THE TOUR DE YORKSHIRE! Residents are being invited to get into the spirit of the Tour de Yorkshire – as the race passes through a number of Rotherham villages for the first time this year. Stage 2 of the race, on Friday 4 May, will pass through Wentworth, Swinton – which is hosting an exciting sprint section – Kilnhurst and Hooton Roberts, as the riders make their way from Barnsley
through Conisbrough and the Dearne Valley to finish in Ilkley. Both the men’s and women’s races will follow the same route through the borough, although start times have not yet been confirmed. A detailed route map can be viewed on the official Tour de Yorkshire website. Members of the public are being encouraged to get involved – race organisers are
encouraging local people to get creative by producing “land art” near to the race route. Businesses, landowners, farmers, schools and community groups are being asked to put their artistic brains together and come up with eye-catching art works – past efforts have included giant bicycles in nearby fields or even decorated church spires.
Or if you can’t run to something on that scale, bicycle-themed bunting is also welcomed – with a competition for “Best Kept Village” also underway. In some areas of Yorkshire people have also previously placed blue and yellow bicycles along the route to create an eyecatching display! “I’m really excited and pleased to see this major cycle race coming through
our area for the first time ever,” said Cllr Taiba Yasseen, Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Cultural Services and Neighbourhood Working. “We’ll keep local residents updated of any road closures nearer the time, but in the meantime I hope everyone gets into the spirit of the event – we would love to see some fabulous land art creations in the borough!”
If you want to take part in the Land Art competition, please check permission
with local landowners and ensure the local community is happy with your plans. For
more information on how to get involved with Land Art or Best Dressed Village, see the website.

NEXT PHASE OF TRANSFORMATIVE CITY CENTRE ANNOUNCED Sheffield City Council has this week announced the next phase of work to deliver its transformative city centre regeneration scheme known as Heart of the City II – the new working title for the city centre development scheme formerly known as the Sheffield Retail Quarter. The Council’s bold new plans include proposals for the latest premium retail and leisure brands, contemporary office and residential space, and attractive world-leading public spaces. Construction on Phase One of the scheme, which includes the flagship new office to be occupied by
HSBC, as well as almost 60,000 sq ft of retail space and high quality public spaces and squares, is well underway and on schedule for completion in 2019. There will be eight new retail units as part of this phase and talks to sign up the first major tenant are at an advanced stage. Responding to feedback gathered during the 2015 public consultation process, the updated masterplan will aim to retain more of the city’s heritage, including the retention of the Pinstone Street frontages and the restoration of historic Leah’s Yard. Rather than create new streets, the scheme will follow existing street
patterns – important in enabling the retention of more of the existing heritage and to better integrate the new scheme with existing shopping areas. Crucially, it will also speed delivery of the next phases by avoiding the disruption and delays associated with changing street layouts. Retention of existing streets will see the John Lewis store remain in its existing location, which it has occupied since 1963 as a key focal point of the city on Barker’s Pool. Again, this will facilitate speed of delivery of the scheme. In addition to attracting premium retailers currently missing in
Sheffield city centre, the proposals now also feature significant levels of Grade A office and residential space – seen as key to providing the required footfall and spending power necessary to create and sustain a vibrant, dynamic city centre. Equally, new leisure facilities will
feature restaurants, cafés and a food hall, as well as public realm, and two new four or five-star hotels. Planning applications for the next three blocks are due to be submitted in early summer 2018, with public consultation beginning shortly after Cabinet, subject to approvals.

ALBERT SNODGRASS
Sadly legendary comedia Ken Dodd past away last weekend at the grand old age of 90. Here are some of his most famous one’liners... ‘I haven’t spoken to my mother-in-law for 18 months. I don’t like to interrupt her.’ ‘It’s ten years since I went out of my mind. I’d never go back.’ ‘You think you can get away, but you can’t. I’ll follow you home and I’ll shout jokes through your letterbox’ - when he was still going strong at a show as it approached midnight. ‘I’ve seen a topless lady ventriloquist. Nobody has ever seen her lips move.’ Do I believe in safe sex? Of course I do. I have a handrail around the bed.’ ‘It’s a privilege to be asked to play here tonight on what is a very special anniversary. It is 100 years to the night since that balcony collapsed’ ‘Honolulu: it’s got everything: sand for the children, sun for the wife, sharks for the wife’s mother.’ ‘Doctor, ‘How old are you?’ ‘I’m approaching 50.’ ‘From which direction?’’ “My act is very educational. I heard a man leaving the other night, saying: ‘Well, that taught me a lesson’.” ‘Fifty-five years in show business, ladies and gentlemen. That’s a hell of a long time to wait for a laugh.’ “My dad knew I was going to be a comedian. When I was a baby, he said, ‘Is this a joke?’.” ”I thought it would be a good idea to go into politics. Maybe I am a little old. but you know, I’d love to be Chancellor of the Exchequer. That way I’ll be united with my money.”

THE world's leading darts players will return to The FlyDSA Arena on Thursday April 12th as the 2018 Unibet Premier League makes its annual visit to Sheffield for a 12th time. Rob Cross, Daryl Gurney, Mensur Suljovic and Gerwyn Price will make their debut in the Unibet Premier League in 2018 following the confirmation of the field for the 16-week roadshow event. Cross capped an incredible debut year as a professional by winning the World Championship final at Alexandra Palace in January, and headlines four new faces for the 2018 Unibet Premier League. World Grand Prix champion Daryl Gurney, Champions League of Darts winner Mensur Suljovic and 2017 UK Open finalist Gerwyn Price will also come in to make their Premier League debuts. Michael van Gerwen will be bidding to win his fourth Premier League title as the defending champion. Van Gerwen and Cross are joined as automatic selections from the world's top four ranked players by 2017 Premier League finalist Peter Wright and two-time champion Gary Anderson. Former champion Raymond van Barneveld joins Gurney, Suljovic and Price amongst the six Wildcard selections, alongside 2012 runner-up Simon Whitlock and former World Youth Champion Michael Smith, who both return to the Premier League field this year. "It's a very fresh looking Premier League," said PDC Chairman Barry Hearn. "We've got four debutants and a truly global field. "It's unbelievable - for Rob Cross to go into number three in the world takes away a selection problem. "The other six were really difficult to get because we had so many contenders, and so many great players who've been in it for a number of years.
"Rob has got focus, he's got ability, he's got bottle. He's a champion, he's a winner and he's going to love the Premier League. "He has his feet on the ground, he seems a very sensible young man and I think we've got a new superstar, another player who's going to challenge the Michael van Gerwen's, Gary Anderson's and Peter Wright's on a regular basis." Hearn added: "Mensur is a fans' favourite, he's got a wonderful personality and he's a winner. Look at his consistency over the year - Premier League selections are not just about the World Championship, they're about results over 12 months. "The World Championship is the most important result but it's not the only criteria. Mensur has been fantastic all season and thoroughly deserves his chance in the Premier League."

SHEFFIELD WELCOMES CHANNEL 4’S MOVE TO REGIONAL HUBS Sheffield welcomes last week’s announcement from Channel 4 to expand their regional presence through three new hubs. Councillor Mazher Iqbal, cabinet member for business and investment at Sheffield City Council,
said: “To establish a new, world-leading centre for digital technology in Sheffield, with its proud reputation for innovation and forward-thinking, would be an excellent complement to any moves made by Channel 4. “Sheffield is home to Doc/Fest, one of the world’s largest documentary film festivals. And the city’s enviable transport links and talent have already brought Boeing and McLaren Automotive here in recent months. Throw in the city’s two Universities with their journalism and media courses and you have a compelling case for Sheffield to be one of Channel 4s creative hubs.
“Sheffield’s personality has a natural fit with Channel 4’s. The city does things differently and is fiercely independent. The city is not afraid to challenge authority, stand up to the status quo and make trouble.” Richard Caborn, Chair of Sheffield’s Channel 4 Bid said: “We want to take this opportunity to reiterate our offer to partner with Channel 4 to create a new National Screen Industries Institute
for digital talent and technology. “We are working with the public and private sector, converging the technologies of the creative industries with digital to establish a National Screen Institute in the city. Through this we can provide a platform to do something similar in the creative and digital industries to the work we have done with the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre and Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park.”

SHEFFIELD CITY COUNCIL WINS TWO REGIONAL AWARDS AT THE AAC APPRENTICESHIP AWARDS EVENT Sheffield City Council is celebrating winning two regional awards at the AAC Apprenticeship Awards. The awards were presented by Robert Halfon MP, the Chair of the Education Select Committee at a Parliamentary Reception on Monday 5 March to mark the start of National Apprenticeship Week. The awards won by Sheffield City Council were ‘Apprentice Employer of the Year’ and ‘Promoting Apprenticeships Campaign of the Year’ and recognise the council’s contribution to apprenticeships, outstanding commitment to promoting apprenticeships and excellent partnership working. Councillor Jackie Drayton, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Families at Sheffield City Council, said: “This is fantastic news. Councillor Julie Dore, The Leader of the Council, has always seen skills and apprenticeships as a key priority for our city. The Apprenticeship Levy has enabled us, along with other employers, to give more
young people this great opportunity to experience the world of work. “Sheffield’s success is due to a long term commitment by the Council, dedicated and creative staff teams and fantastic partnership working with schools, education providers, employers, families and young people.” All regional winners will go forwards as nominees for the National Awards which will be announced on the 22 March at the AAC Awards Dinner in Birmingham. These award announcements coincide with this week’s National Apprenticeship Week, that promotes the importance of apprenticeships for both learners and employers. As part of the week, Sheffield City Council and Fortem, the property repairs and maintenance specialist is hosting its annual apprenticeship event ‘Be Inspired’ on Wednesday 8 March. This is where employers who are looking to recruit apprentices in the summer and pupils involved in ‘Apprenticeship Ready’ get the opportunity to network,
discuss vacancies and share CVs. 1200 students and 70 employers have already signed up for the event who have more than 300 vacancies. 136 students were recruited to apprenticeships at last year’s event. Students from Years 11 – 13 from schools across Sheffield and the City Region are
invited to attend the Be Inspired event at Cutlers Hall, Church Street, S1 1HG which runs from 12.30pm to 4pm.
More information about this free event is at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/apprenticeships-be-inspired-2018-tickets-39686673910 or call 0114 2296186.

SHEFFIELD’S SEVENTIES’ PALACE TO THE STARS REMEMBERED It was as near as Sheffieldiers ever got to a taste of Las Vegas - without having to leave the city. Arundel Gate’s Club Fiesta, which opened I the summer of 1970, captured the hopes and aspirations of a city ready to take on the world. Sheffield’s confidence was at an all time high as the sprawling cabaret club – then the biggest nightclub in all of Europe - promised to attract the biggest stars in the world to its palatial establishment. It didn’t disappoint. The glittering, purpose-built venue cost a staggering £500,000 and was opened by Keith and Jim Lipthorpe – former semi-pro
musicians from Teesside that made Sheffield their home. The Fiesta helped launch the careers of a host of national stars spanning Les Dawson to Sheffield’s own Marti Caine and came nearer to landing a gig by Elvis Presley than any other UK venue. The Beach Boys, Stevie Wonder, The Jacksons, Tommy Cooper – the list of stars that graced the 1,300 capacity auditorium is a who’s who of star entertainment from the era. Biting recessions, industrial disputes, changing entertainment tastes, and the rising fees of big name stars called time on the dream - it came crashing down in spectacular
style for the Lipthorpes in 1976 when the venue went into administration. But it soon reopened and soldiered on until it finally shut in 1980s. Neil Anderson, author of ‘No Siesta ‘Til Club Fiesta’ which has just been re-released, said: “It’s unlikely Sheffield will ever see anything like the Fiesta again. Sheffield was booming in the early seventies and nowhere represented that confidence better than the Fiesta.” ‘No Siesta ‘Til Club Fiesta’ is available from www.acmretro. com for just £12.95. It includes scores of rare photos, interviews with stars, staff and clubgoers.
Fiesta Club opening – The Lord and Lady Mayoress of Sheffield view the new club.
MartiCaine – Sheffield’s own Marti Caine that rose through the ranks to headline at the palatial venue.
Elvis at Fiesta – The Fiesta’s own newspaper whets the appetite for a possible Elvis show. Fiesta Club Peter Volans – The Fiesta’s Peter Volans after the club reopened in 1977.

DANISH SUPERSTAR RIDES IN FOR FAREWELL MEETING DANISH superstar Niels-Kristian Iversen is coming to Sheffield for Simon Stead’s Farewell Meeting on Sunday March 25 (4pm). Iversen, a former Grand Prix and World Cup winner, is back in British speedway
this year with King’s Lynn and is the latest top name to commit himself to the event which is set to kick off the Owlerton season in style. Stead said: “The news just gets better and better. When I came off the phone to Niels
SPONSORSHIP AVAILABLE The racesuits of Sheffield's starting reserve duo are back available for sponsorship. after he confirmed he’d be here, I literally punched the air with delight. “He’s always been a great rider to watch, and I’m really happy to be able to add him to the line-up. “When you look at the fact that we also
have the likes of Jason Doyle, Chris Holder, Hans Andersen and Martin Vaculik it’s developing into a World-class field, and I’m sure there will be some great racing.” Stead has also confirmed places for two more of the Leicester riders he will be team managing in the SGB Premiership this season. Former British Champion Danny King and exciting Polish newcomer Krystian Pieszczek will both be competing on Stead’s big day. Stead added: “It will be the first time Krystian has raced at Sheffield, and I’m sure the fans will look forward to seeing him. “As for Danny, he’s a great lad and we’ve had some good times racing together over the years. It really means a lot to me that he’ll be riding in the meeting. “It’s all coming together now, we’re almost there with the line-up and I’d like to thank all of the riders who have agreed to take part and celebrate my racing career.”
WORK PARTY VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED Sheffield Speedway require the help of volunteers as they carry out essential track and stadium work ahead of the new season. From 9am on Sunday, March 18, a supporters' group will be gathering at Owlerton to carry out a number of jobs ahead of the opening fixture the following week. Hot drinks will be provided for all who turn up.
COUNTY SENIOR FOOTBALL with Michael Clarke
The snow may have thawed, but sadly that does not guarantee a return to perfect playing conditions in our region. The heavy rain on Friday led to the postponement of all but six of Saturday afternoon’s games. Premier Division Only one game survived the poor weather in the Premier Division; that came at the UPVC Trade Centre Ground between Denaby Main and Jubilee Sports. Fourth placed Jubilee took all three points available, with a 7-1 win. Jordan Livett (2), Kain Murphy (2), John Travis, Charlie Hobson and Kane Doughty were all on target for Jubilee.

Division One As in the Premier Division, only one game took place in Division Two. Mid-table sides Caribbean Sports and Kiveton Park played-out a 2-2 draw at the Caribbean Sports Ground. Division Two Most of Saturday’s action took place in the Second Division, with four games getting the green light. Goals from Ryan Hallsworth, Joel Hickling and Daryl Smith gave Wombwell Main Development a 3-2 away win over league leaders Burngreave FC at the Firvale Academy. Wombwell move up to ninth with the win, with Burngreave remaining league leaders by six points but this loss is their second in a row. Second placed New Bohemians lost 2-1 at home against Swinton Athletic Reserves at Forge Valley. New Bohemians ended the day in third place, with Boynton Sports leapfrogging them after a 4-1 home win over Caribbean Sports Reserves. Daniel Parker, Daniel Marcus, John Mellor and Chris Nimmo were all on target for Boynton. Just two points separate now second placed Boynton, third placed New Bohemians and fourth placed Swinton Athletic Reserves. James O’Brien scored a 80th minute winner to give Sheffield Bankers Reserves a 1-0 win over AFC Dronfield Reserves at Gosforth Playing Fields. The win takes the Bankers into sixth position.

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
Is there too much technology in angling now? Do we take too much intelligence to the bank? Is it spoiling fishing? Or is another evolution? I sat on the banks this week, amidst a howling snowstorm, whilst catching nothing but cold, and glanced down at my kit whilst pondering this week’s column. I was a little surprised to realise just how much ‘tech’ I carry, but I bet I’m not alone… Aside from the usual smartphone, with more computing power than was used to put man on the moon, I also carry a couple of digital cameras, a tablet, a powerpack, and now, a Deeper sonar. Yes, admittedly, I do write whilst on the bank, (especially if blanking) and I’m obliged to take a couple of hundred images each week for various clients, so the tablet and cameras are a necessary part of my angling, as is the phone, and as a result, so is the powerpack come to think of it! I know of other anglers who take a variety of lighting options, cookers, electrically heated socks or sleeping bags, a bivvy heater, underwater cameras, and all sorts of other gadgets, and I wondered are we fishing, or camping? I know we all go fishing for our own reasons, but are we losing the ethos of angling? The passion for angling? Or is it just things moving on? Personally, I enjoy nothing more than leaving all the gadgetry at home, grabbing a single rod, a small box of tackle, a few worms, and stalking a few swims on the river to see what I can catch, but unfortunately, (or not) modern angling seems to be moving on… Having said that, I’m not completely oblivious to the advantages of advancement. I recognise that bite alarms allow the angler to sit back and take in the surrounding countryside, that developments in leisurewear and sleeping bags have enabled anglers to fish year round in far more comfort, and that smartphones and tablets have changed the way we live for ever, giving access to knowledge immediately, on the bank, that may allow us to fish better, so it’s not all bad. I have to be honest and admit to embracing the very latest in castable sonars too, but is it cheating, or is it using my time a little more wisely? I like to think the latter, but I’m not so naïve as to think that others will agree, but what has it changed for me? Knowledge; the ability to see a little further into the water, and to use that bit of advantage to fish better, and more efficiently… hopefully! This week I endured a gruelling session on the bank at a local club water. As I arrived, I noted another angler setting up on the lower pool, so stopped to chat. As we compared fishy tales, I watched his quivertip pull around within a few seconds as a fish picked up the bait. He missed the bite, so rather than distract him further, I made my way to the next pool to tackle up my own quivertip rod. It was still cold, with sheets of ice drifting across the lake, and as I got the umbrella tied down, it started to snow. I’d picked the car park peg, not wanting to barrow everything around in the mud, so was settled into a peg giving access to an area of deeper, warmer water; or was I? I catapulted a few tiny pellets out, followed by a pouch of maggots, loaded the feeder with groundbait, and dropped it on the spot, fully expecting a fish or two. After an hour of regular casting, nothing had happened, so I changed the feeder for one full of gentles and lengthened the hook link. Another hour, and aside from a brief flicker of the tip, still nothing had happened. I changed my hook pattern and put a grain of corn on the hook before returning the feeder to the spot; still nothing, another hour gone. Fining right down to a single maggot on a size 20 hook just saw a translucent skin returned, so it was obvious that the only inhabitant of the swim were tiny roach, too small to even register at my quivertip! I put on a small waggler, shotted it right down,

and fished almost under my rod tip to try and get a positive indication. Again, a pinch of maggots over the top, and again, for another hour, I sat biteless… I changed once more to the quivertip rod, hoping that fish would have moved to the baited patch, and wasted yet another fruitless hour watching a motionless tip… That made six hours of staring at the water for no return; could technology help? I set up a heavier rod and cast the Deeper sonar out into the swim. I’ve had a trawl around with a marker float previously, and I reckoned that the lake bed was fairly consistent at about six feet deep. Apparently not. I knew there was a snag to my front, but I didn’t know it came up almost two feet off the bottom, nor did I know that the lake bed shallowed up just to the left of it. Nor did I know of a small depression further to the left, or the fact that a deeper trench ran along the far bank, less than a rod length out. I knew that there was a bed of lilies to my left, but I didn’t realise that an amount of blanket weed covered the swim beneath the canopy. Yes, I agree, that it could perhaps be deduced or expected, but it was nice to see it in technicolour on the screen before me… The sonar also revealed my swim completely devoid of fish, but interestingly, it also alerted me to the fact that where I was fishing, the water was considerably cooler, by at least two degrees, than the area to my left. The sun had briefly illuminated that area earlier, and despite the presence of the deeper trench, it was here that fish were located! I reckon that a sluice to my right, pulling water through to the lower pool, and tipping the ice sheets into the abyss, was the reason for the cold water influx in my swim. Obviously, I cast in to the area which had returned piscine pings, and within a few minutes, I missed a bite… the only one so far! A quick recast, and I missed another, but then I decided enough was enough, as by now, I was more interested in playing with the features of the sonar… Like any male of the species, I didn’t read the instructions, instead blundering through a series of tabs to find a variety of settings. After twenty minutes of said fluster, I opened the manual which is embedded within the App, and was quickly able to decipher more of the techno-garb, which saw a veil lift as I began to translate the icons reflected back at me; a revelation indeed! The one feature which stood out far more than any other was the ability to quickly map a water, store the result, and even add notes and a picture! By revisiting the stored map, I’m able to see exactly what the lake depths are, and combined with the history tab, I can even tell whether the lake bed is hard or soft, gravelly or weedy, and much more! It’s like having a plethora of marker float information at my fingertips, only much more accurate, and I haven’t had to spend hours writing in a notebook or thrashing the water to a foam with a lead and marker to get there! Brilliant! There is no doubt more to discover. If I’m honest, I’ll keep the marker float too, just to confirm things until my confidence is absolute, (after all, a length of white wool beneath the marker tells a story) but initial soundings (geddit?) are good. The Deeper can give me as much information (and more) in ten minutes that splashing around with a marker would give in a couple of hours, and as a time limited angler, where every minute counts, then I’m damn well going to use it at the end of sessions to map the lake, or when I get an hour with a lake nearby, and give myself an advantage next time…why not? Although it may tell me what is happening beneath the water, I still haven’t found the tab which persuades fish to eat my bait… I do wish they would hurry up and update the App!

NO COMPLAINTS WITH RESULT WARNE
Millers boss Paul Warne assessed his side’s display after a 1-0 defeat at home to Rochdale last weekend. An incredible run came to an end at the hands of Keith Hill’s side after Warne’s men won seven on the spin in a 14-match unbeaten sequence. “The lads have been on an amazing run,” said Warne. “The lads are disappointed to lose the run today but I think we came up against an excellent team. I think their position in the league doesn’t say how good they are really. Me and Rich (Richie Barker) went and watched them midweek and we knew what a formidable team they were. “It was just disappointing. I don’t think everyone was on song today, I think that would be a fair point. Going in 1-0 up at half time, we might have had a bit of spring in us. But we just didn’t get our passing game going today. We didn’t get wide enough quick enough. We came against a really good team and we have to dust ourselves down for the next one.” There was a big moment at the end of the first half when Richard Wood’s header was chalked off by the referee which would have given the Millers a half time lead. “I thought, in fairness, the first half although we probably had more of the ball, they had a couple of good chances,” said Warne. “There was a good clearance from Fordey and Woody. Marek was looking good in the back, it was quite a close-knit game. But then, second half, we changed a few things. They threw the kitchen sink, had a right go and kept trying to get us on the break.
“They’ve got a well-organised team, a fit team and that’s one of the hardest games we’ve had at home, to be honest. They just wouldn’t let us play. “We knew they were going to play that way. It wasn’t a shock and the lads knew. We tried to get the ball down the side of the centre-halves, but they competed really well against Bally and Smudge. “We got a little bit run-over in the middle of the park. We may well have rode our luck in recent weeks, I’m well aware of that, and today we probably didn’t have it. It didn’t drop to someone from a set-piece. Their ‘keeper did really well and came for a lot of things. “We said to the lads before the game and I don’t think we underestimated them at all. We worked as hard as we always worked, I just can’t see them being in the bottom four. I think they’re a really good outfit and, unfortunately for us today they were too much for us. “We’ve had a chat with the players. It wasn’t a shouting match, I’m proud of my team but it was just unfortunate today we weren’t as good as we should be. It’s disappointing we didn’t play as well as we sould in front of our home supporters but Rochdale didn’t let us.”
FERGUSON PRAISES ROVERS SPIRIT Darren Ferguson felt his side were good value for a point at Southend United after the 0-0 draw at Roots Hall. Rovers’ clean sheet against the Shrimpers was their second in their past three games in Sky Bet League One, and the manager praised the team’s determination. He said: “I am really proud of the team, we had to change things 10 minutes before kickoff which isn’t ideal but I felt Matty Blair came in and did a really good job. “The back four were strong against a really

“The end of season dinner is a fantastic event which enables us to come together as a football club to reflect on and celebrate our achievements on and off the pitch in 2017/18,” he explained. “I have been a part of several of these events in the past and they are always really enjoyable, with a host of activities taking place on the night, including our end of season awards, auctions and raffles. “I am sure you will all agree that no matter the final outcome of this season, it has been a really enjoyable one so far and this event is a great chance for us to thank the fans and sponsors for their superb backing throughout the course of this year.” To book contact our commercial team by telephone on 01709 827769 or by email on commercial@rotherhamunited.net.

He added: “We’ve got a while now before the Bradford game, we will make sure we do things at a good intensity and give the players enough rest with it being such a long week leading up to the game. “We’ve got a few players coming back into contention who will make a difference for us at a stage of the season where it’s important to have options, we have to find the right balance with things. “At this time of the season the intensity levels stay the same, but the time you’re working doesn’t as recovery is the most important thing. We’ll use the players as much as we can.” Tickets for the game against Bradford City on Monday March 19 are available from the Club Doncaster Box Office, on 01302 762576 or at tickets.clubdoncaster.co.uk
“Me and Ian are very competitive in training, we always want to push ourselves to be better, and Ian has been in fantastic form this season, but we have a great relationship,” he added. “I think I’ve done alright, I’ve been quite comfortable and quite confident, after the Rotherham game I just wanted another game to come along quickly, it was a very frustrating game, but these things happen in football but it’s all forgotten about now. “You always have to be ready, you have to expect to come into the side, I’ve kept saying to myself just to be patient and that my time in the side would come, if it comes you have to be ready and I’m glad my chance has come.”

WE DESERVED MORE SAYS BOSS Chris Wilder thought his side did everything but take the points at Portman Road. Chris Wilder felt the Blades deserved to take all three points from Saturday’s goalless draw against Ipswich Town. United were the better side on a testing playing surface at Portman Road and came closest to a winner when James Wilson hitting the post with a dipping effort. The Blades boss remarked: “I thought we deserved more because our performance was excellent. “The pitch, for both sides, meant you weren’t able to play
the ball round, so we knew it would be a very competitive game. “It was two honest teams going at it, but we’ve got to score when we have those golden opportunities in the second-half, but I can’t fault the players effort. “We’re tired, we’ve had four away games on the bounce, some long journeys and that’s the relentlessness of the Championship that we often talk about.” Wilder added: “My players have picked themselves up and gone again after Fulham and Ipswich had little in the way of chances, whereas we have, Wilson has hit
the post and we’ve had two or three other real opportunities to score. “The attitude of the players was absolutely brilliant, Enda and George have got in good areas and we can’t do more than create numerous chances to score goals. “Second-half we dominated it and bossed, always knowing they are a dangerous side, with the quality players they’ve got. “We didn’t deserve to draw, we deserved to win, but you have to accept what you’re given and we move on to Tuesday.”
STEVENS CALLED UP FOR IRELAND
Enda Stevens has been called up by the Republic of Ireland at senior level for the first time. The Blades defender has impressed at Championship level this term having joined from
Portsmouth last summer, making 36 appearances in all competitions. Now he has been named in Martin O'Neill's 30man provisional squad for the friendly against Turkey in Antalya on Friday 23rd March.
SIX SCHOLARS TO TURN PRO Six of United’s scholars have penned their first professional contracts with the club, deals which come into effective at the end of their scholarships. Marcus Dewhurst, along with George Cantrill, Keenan Ferguson, Jordan Doherty, Oliver Greaves and French striker Simeon Oure have all recently put pento-paper on pro terms with United. Goalkeeper Dewhurst has recently earnt international recognition with England’s U17s, whilst Doherty and Greaves have impressed in United’s development
squad this term. Ferguson and Cantrill are both young and versatile defenders, who continue to develop with experience at U23 level, whilst attacking midfielder Oure has settled in extremely well since joining the Blades earlier this season, following spells with USMF Gagne and Nimes Olympique in his native France. Meanwhile, three firstyear professionals, in addition to Regan Slater and Sam Graham, have signed new deals. Jordan Hallam, Harvey Gilmour, both of whom have been regulars for
the U23s this season, have committed their future to the club, along with Callum Semple who has recently returned to competitive action having picked up a serious knee injury last season. Academy Manager Travis Binnion remarked: “These players have been given new deals as we feel they have the potential to progress. “It is now up to them to continue to work hard and develop as quickly as they can to take the next step in their careers.”

BILLY TAKES THE POSITIVES Billy Sharp was keen to take the positives out of Saturday’s stalemate with Ipswich Town. A tricky playing surface at Portman Road hampered both teams and despite hitting the post through James Wilson, United had to settle for a share of the
spoils in Suffolk. The skipper remarked: “We’re disappointed we didn’t get all three points, but it was difficult to find that bit of quality on that surface. “Ipswich make it that way I suppose, but it’s the same for both teams, it was competitive, it was a battle, but we did enough to edge it and win the game. “Hopefully after two home games this looks a better point than it does now.”
Sharp added: “I was disappointed not to hit the target on the rebound, after Willo hit the post. I was hoping to dive in on it but he hit the shot well and the ball skipped up off the surface.”
UNFINISHED BUSINESS FOR CHED WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH In a match that can best be described as turgid, little has been made of the fact that Ched Evans made his return to the starting XI. However those of us that witnessed the sixty minutes or so that he played were genrally impressed with his workrate, his first touch and his general hold-up play. Unfortunately we didn’t get the chance to see if he still has the rocket shot (never got a decent chance in the game) or the deadly eye for goal that marked his last season with us in League One. What we did so though was a man with a point to prove - and
if he gets the pitch time he could yet be the secret weapon in Chris Wilder’s armoury as the run-in gathers momentum. I got a sense of deja-vu at Portman Road - it reminded me in so many ways of the awful match we endured at Oldham last season, on a pitch that was even worse than Saturday’s. At the time the draw we earned there felt like points dropped - but many of the chasing temas around us visited Boundary Park subsequently and came a cropper - and from that point on the winning run started that carried us to 100 points. Don’t read too much into Saturday’s
result. Skill was at a premium and there was very little end result from some attractive passages of play, but such was the surface that one-touch football was nigh impossible, and it often took two or three touches on the bobbly surface simply to bring the ball under control. Players struggled to measure passes, as the ball would shoot away insome areas and slow to a halt in others. But the defence looked solid, Blackman commanded his area with a growing authority and the midfield battled to take command of the game, and the display was totally committed under difficult circumstances.

LUHUKAY FRUSTRATED Jos Luhukay was left frustrated by Bolton’s late leveller as the Owls were pegged back by the Trotters at Hillsborough. George Boyd struck first for Wednesday with 12 minutes to go but Aaron Wilbraham rose from the
bench to head a last-gasp equaliser. Luhukay said: “It’s a frustration, of course, to lose any goal but so late in the game is hard to take. “We allowed the cross to come in from the right and we could have
closed that down. “We have to defend that situation better so we are very disappointed. “But that is not the only thing that happened in this game. When we had possession we did not really do great things with the ball.
“We have one week now to do our work, improve, and take that to Leeds next Saturday.” Luhukay did issue a positive update from the injury bay, with Barry Bannan set to join Sam Hutchinson and Joost van Aken at the exit door. The Owls manager said: “We will decide tomorrow who will play for the Under-23s on Monday. “Sam and Joost have made good progress so we will continue to assess them and Barry Bannan will also be considered for the game.”
MORE TO COME Joey Pelupessy made his tenth appearance for the Owls on Saturday and believes he will get stronger as the weeks go by. The 24-year-old is still relatively new and adapting to his surroundings at Hillsborough but looks forward to his future here with Wednesday. He said: “I hope I can continue to develop and in the next few weeks you will see more from me. “I will continue to work hard to the end of the season, and then continue that into the off-season to be ready and stronger with the team for the next campaign. I look forward to this. “Everything is new
for me and that can be a challenge but I feel it’s good for my development.” The immediate future, of course, is a Yorkshire derby away at Leeds on Saturday. “I’m looking forward to it, in my opinion these are the best games to play. Hopefully I am going to play,” he told swfc.co.uk. “It’s another big game again, it’s difficult at the moment but we stick together and keep fighting. “If you work hard and fight for each other, the results and points will come. “We would like nothing more than to go into the next break with those three points."
