CELEBRITY CHEFS LINE UP FOR DONCASTER FESTIVAL Delicious Doncaster Food and Drink Festival is returning for 2018 with a bigger, tastier and even more exciting menu on offer for visitors! Spanning across four days of the May Bank Holiday weekend, from Friday 4 to Monday 7 May, the festival will feature entertainment, activities, hot street food and some exciting names from the culinary world. This year, one of the UK’s favourite cookery duos the Hairy Bikers (Si and Dave) will be the star attractions of the festival. They will be making an appearance on Saturday 5 May in the demonstration kitchen based in Market Square, to show how

to cook some of their favourite recipes using ingredients bought at Doncaster Market. The popular TV chefs will also spend part of the day taking in a walking tour of the market and will be on hand for meet and greets with their many fans. Most recently seen on our television screens earlier this year with ‘The Hairy Bikers’ Mediterranean Adventures’, the much-loved pair have presented several hit TV programmes over the years and have also written twenty books to date, including a number of best-sellers. Following the success of last year’s appearance, Jean-Christophe Novelli will also be

returning to ‘Delicious Doncaster Food and Drink Festival’ on Sunday 6 May. The multi Michelin Award winning TV chef will once again demonstrate how to prepare some more of his mouthwatering dishes using locally sourced produce. All of the celebrity chef cooking demonstrations on Saturday and Sunday will be ticketed events, so keep an eye on Visit Doncaster (@ visitdoncaster) and My Doncaster (@ mydoncaster) social media pages for further details – bookings will be open from 26 March. The festival is set to take over the town centre and surround the streets of the town’s historic Market

REGIONAL EDITION

Square; showcasing its fantastic offer which is available all year round. There’ll also be over 100 additional stalls including travelling food retailers, hot foods, street foods and artisan producers to make sure every taste is catered for. Visitors can look forward to plenty of other entertainment, cooking challenges and family fun over the four days of the festival. There’ll be cooking demonstrations from Doncaster College students and lecturers and the return of the Ready Steady Cook challenge on Friday 4 May. Local chefs and restauranteurs will also be appearing throughout the festival

to demonstrate how to prepare mouth-watering dishes of their own. Further details of events and activities taking place across the Delicious Doncaster Food and Drink Festival weekend will be announced via www. visitdoncaster.com . Councillor Nigel Ball, Cabinet Member for Public Health, Leisure and Culture said: “It’s fantastic to see Delicious Doncaster Food and Drink Festival is bigger and better than ever this year. The Hairy Bikers are amongst the UK’s favourite chefs, so to have them involved in our festival is a real feather in the cap for Doncaster. We’ve also got Jean-Christophe Novelli returning,

who proved to be a real favourite with the crowds when he appeared at last year’s festival. To have such huge names from the world of food involved really highlights our ambition to make this event an important date in our calendar. We’re aiming to attract not

just food lovers from Doncaster, but food lovers from outside the borough and right across the region. “There’s going to be plenty on offer throughout the festival weekend for the whole family and it’s also a great way to remind people about our award

winning market. It’s important that people take advantage of the fantastic offer, shop locally and eat locally sourced produce; with the transformation of the Wool Market currently taking place as well, these really are exciting times for Doncaster Market.”

SHEFFIELD HALLAM PLANS FOR NEW CITY GATEWAY Sheffield Hallam University is seeking partners and investors to develop a new Sheffield City Gateway. Proposals for a 37-storey tower, which will be on the site of the former Nelson Mandela Building on Sheaf Street, have been unveiled at the annual MIPIM real estate conference in Cannes. The development, which supports but is not a core part of the University’s new £220million Campus Masterplan, would feature a mix of uses, including restaurants, a hotel, conferencing facilities and residential units. A feasibility study and proposal for the new building on Sheaf Street, is currently being developed alongside partners BDP and Lambert Smith Hampton

and was presented to 24,000 international property professionals in Cannes last week. The site was formerly home to Sheffield City Polytechnic’s Student’s Union, originally the Phoenix Building and renamed the Nelson Mandela Building in 1982, to honour the anti-apartheid campaigner. Daniel Ladbury, director of estates at Sheffield Hallam, said: “The University plays a vital role as one of the major employers and capital investors in the region and it’s exciting to be able to share our ambitious future plans for our estate and the wider Sheffield City Region. “The proposition has been developed with Sheffield City Council’s Core Strategy in mind: the site lies

within the Sheffield Urban Area which encourages and promotes major development, vibrant and engaging street scenes.” Last month the University launched its Campus Masterplan - a 20-year proposal to create a sustainable and flexible campus that will allow Sheffield Hallam to achieve its ambition of becoming the world’s leading applied university. The first phase of the masterplan will cost around £220million and will be delivered over the next five years. It includes new buildings for the Business School and social sciences, refurbishing the Students’ Union building known as The HUBS, creating a University Green and improving our current estate.

Subsequent phases will see the campus consolidated including the refurbishment and redevelopment of existing buildings alongside new buildings; all designed to provide the flexibility

Early Doors, Britain’s best loved pub sitcom is to tour the country later this year for the very first time. The live incarnation of the BBC TV favourite will be stopping off in Sheffield at the FlyDSA Arena’s intimate theatre style setting, The Steel Hall on Sunday 30th September. The live show was originally planned as a one week run at Salford Lowry’s Quay’s Theatre. But due to huge public demand for tickets those shows SOLD OUT instantly and a further two weeks of shows at the Lowry’s larger Lyric Theatre were added, which also SOLD OUT in record time. Commissioned by leading West End producer Philip McIntyre to adapt their award winning television series for the stage, Craig Cash and Phil Mealey have written a brand new story featuring the same hilarious characters from the TV show. Craig Cash and Phil Mealey said: “Writing Early Doors again has been a joy and we’re really excited by the results. Putting it on stage for the first time ever will be a huge thrill. One that we hope you will come along and share.” The Grapes Pub will reopen its doors for the

UK tour, in a not-to-be-missed night of fun and laughter. Ken’s got love on his mind, but will barmaid, Tanya, ring the landlord’s bell? Old Tommy would play Cupid - if only he didn’t have IBS (Irritable Bugger’s Syndrome). Crime is on the rise but fear not, as local cops Phil and Nige are getting stuck in... to a couple of pints in the back room. After all, “Crime can’t crack itself.” All of this and much, much more when Early Doors returns. Starring Craig Cash, Phil Mealey, John Henshaw, Susan Cookson, Joan Kempson, James Quinn, Lisa Millett, Judith Barker, with further casting to be announced. To the regiment! Don’t just wish you were there - make sure of it! Tickets are now on genetal sale.. Tickets booked online www.flydsaarena.co.uk or by phone 0114 256 56 56 are priced £42.00, £36.40 & £25.20 (including booking fee). Tickets booked in person at the Arena Box Office are priced £39.38, £34.13 & £23.63 (including booking fee).

SCHOOLS URGED TO SIGN UP FOR FREE LIFE-SAVING LESSON ON RESTART A HEART DAY

Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust (YAS) is inviting the county’s secondary schools to sign up for a free life-saving lesson on Restart a Heart Day 2018! Hundreds of ambulance staff and volunteers will give up their time to provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training to more than 25,000 youngsters on Tuesday 16 October. As an added incentive to take part, all participating pupils will be invited to enter an artwork challenge and the winner will receive a defibrillator for their school!

YAS first delivered the mass training event in 2014 to mark the European Resuscitation Council’s Restart a Heart Day. Over the last four years, YAS has provided CPR training to over 76,000 youngsters and has been instrumental in rolling out the event to all ambulance services across the UK, Australia and New Zealand. Jason Carlyon, Clinical Development Manager for Yorkshire Ambulance Service, said: “This year will be our fifth annual Restart a Heart Day when we will hopefully smash the milestone of providing CPR training to over 100,000 youngsters since 2014. “This will be an incredible achievement and it’s all thanks to the hundreds of volunteers and the secondary schools across Yorkshire who understand the value of providing this life-saving lesson. “CPR is a simple, easy intervention that can save the lives of patients in cardiac arrest. By being trained and having the confidence to use CPR, anyone can dramatically increase a

patient’s chance of survival.” Currently in the UK, less than one (8.6%) in ten people survive a cardiac arrest. If we achieved the same survival rates of countries like Norway (25%), where CPR is taught in schools, an additional 100 lives could be saved each week - the equivalent of approximately 5,000 every year. The event is organised in conjunction with the Resuscitation Council (UK), the British Heart Foundation, which provides the necessary equipment free of charge as part of its Nation of Lifesavers campaign, St John Ambulance and other partners. If your secondary school would like to take part in the event, you can register via the homepage at http://www.restartaheart.yas. nhs.uk/. The deadline for applications is Tuesday 1 May 2018. While we will do our best to accommodate every request, we know this will be a hugely popular event so we would encourage schools to register at the earliest opportunity.

PIONEERING 3 ST PAUL’S PLACE SOLD FOR £24M 3 St Paul’s Place, the flagship office building in the heart of Sheffield, has been sold for £24 million. It has been bought by London-based investment company M&G Real Estate. Developers U+I and CTP, who built the 78,000 sq ft Grade A speculatively, hailed the sale “as a massive vote of confidence in the city of Sheffield.” David Topham, director of Manchester-based developers CTP commented: “We are tremendously proud of what we have achieved at 3 St Paul’s Place. It is the first speculative office building to be developed in Sheffield since the recession and now boasts a number of high-quality occupiers. “The sale completes the St Paul’s Place masterplan, which has been a primary regeneration initiative for Sheffield city centre and a crucial part of Sheffield’s £185m Heart of the City project. It puts Sheffield firmly on the map as a business destination. “The remarkable success of St Paul’s Place, and 3 St Paul’s Place in particular, has transformed and ignited the city’s office market. When we embarked on the overall development, Grade A rents were about £15 per sq ft. They are now a record-breaking £24.50 per sq ft. “We have developed a high-quality investment class product for the city attracting Standard Life, Canada Life, GE Capital and M&G to Sheffield. This has revitalised not just the office market in the Sheffield city centre, but the retail offer too.

“This city centre transformation is critical to Sheffield’s future, acting as a catalyst for further regeneration and underlining the city’s exciting future as a leading UK city. Sheffield now has a balanced and productive economy, straddling many sectors including advanced manufacturing, health and wellbeing and education, alongside a wide range of creative and professional services,” said Mr Topham. High-profile occupiers at 3 St Paul’s Place now include civil engineers Arup, architects BDP and HLM, leading Swedish bank Handelsbanken and lawyers Freeths. Simon Hesketh of co-developers U+I said: “We are delighted to have been involved in delivering 3 St. Paul’s Place, a first class office development for Sheffield. The sale to M&G underlines the quality of the building and underlines its position as significant new commercial centre for the city.” Henrie Westlake, investment partner at the Leeds office of global property consultancy Knight Frank, who advised CTP and U+I, commented: “The sale of 3 St Paul’s Place reinforces the building’s position within the market, as one of the most prestigious developments within the Sheffield City Region. “3 St Paul’s Place really is a fantastic scheme, with a prime Heart of the City location and excellent public realm amenities on the doorstep. The quality of the occupiers already at No 3 is superb. All of these factors have made the building a very attractive investment, reflected in the sale figure of £24million.” The construction of the 10-storey 3 St Paul’s Place went ahead following a landmark agreement between CTP and U+I, the specialist regeneration developer and investor, with Sheffield City Council and the Department for Communities and Local Government. Further finance was provided by Barclays and SCR Jessica. David Topham commented: “We are very grateful to all our funders and investors, who backed our plans in the recession when development finance was scarce. They believed in us and we are delighted to have repaid that faith.” Councillor Mazher Iqbal, cabinet member for busi-

THE HISTORY OF WEDDING FAVOURS The tradition of giving wedding favours goes back many centuries... It is believed that the upper class families in Europe handed out the first wedding favours, known then as bomboniere; a cube of sugar placed inside a small trinket box made of porcelain or crystal and often decorated with precious stones that made a keepsake for the guests.

Overtime, other social classes took on the tradition of giving wedding favours to guests. Eventually the bomboniere was replaced with almonds given to guests to signify good wishes for the couple’s new life together. People believed that the five almonds represented health, wealth, happiness, fertility and long life. Today, almonds are still a strong

contender in the wedding favour stakes. Nowadays, there are a multitude of suppliers offering a huge range of traditional and novel wedding favours. I would recommend taking your time to look around and find something that reflects your personality and style of the day. Often wedding favours range from lottery tickets, miniature

chocolates scattered on tables, personalised candles, tins of mints, to bookmarks, chocolate casino coins and embroidered handkerchiefs. One bride even went to the effort of making and decanting her own strawberry lip balm for the women! It went down a storm and the bride was chuffed with her personal involvement and cost cutting exercise. Your budget is a significant factor to consider when selecting your wedding favours. Favours need not be expensive or elaborate. I find the best are often simple gifts, imaginatively wrapped and presented. If you would rather spend the pounds on other areas of the wedding, then that is fine. Whilst it is nice to receive and give a gift, favours are not essential. Couples sometimes decide not to favour and to be honest the guests didn’t even notice because they were too busy enjoying themselves.

as the Big Top performances, but on a larger scale now, visiting major arenas and venues, including those around the UK. OVO, meaning “egg” in Portuguese, is a headlong rush into a colourful ecosystem teeming with life, where insects work, eat, crawl, flutter, play, fight and look for love in a non-stop riot of energy and movement. When a mysterious egg appears in their midst, the insects are awestruck and intensely curious about this iconic object that represents the

enigma and cycles of their lives. It is love at first sight when a gawky, quirky insect arrives in this bustling community and a fabulous ladybug catches his eye – and the feeling is mutual. British rock bands are springing up everywhere and the latest gang seeking approval are guitar act Wayward Sons. The band features Toby Jepson (Vocals/Guitar), Sam Wood (Guitar), Nic Wastell (Bass), Dave Kemp (Keys) and Phil Martini (Drums). They’ve an impressive resume of groups they have previously worked with – Little Angels, Gun, Spear Of Destiny, Treason Kings and Chrome Molly to name a few, so

it goes without saying that these guys know what they’re doing. Wayward Sons have also been nominated for three Planet Rock awards and sound nothing like the sum of their parts Fresh from the critically acclaimed release of their debut album “Ghosts Of Yet To Come” and support to Steel Panther and Inglorious across the UK in January 2018, Wayward Sons are pleased to announce a full headline UK tour in April. To coincide with

the shows, the band will be releasing a brand new single “Don’t Wanna Go”, taken from their debut album “Ghosts Of Yet To Come”. Later in the year they also have the honour of supporting one of Yorkshire’s finest, Barnsley boys Saxon, who are also out promoting their latest album. Wayward Sons will play in Sheffield at Academy 2 on April 20th with full tour details via their website.

24 HOUR PARTY PEOPLE - HAPPY MONDAYS BRING THEIR BIGGEST HITS TO DONCASTER RACECOURSE Following their 30th Anniversary ’24 Hour Party People Greatest Hits’ – November & December 2017 UK Tour, Manchester’s legendary Happy Mondays are back this Summer for an action packed day out performing at Doncaster – Racecourse on Saturday 19th May after the racing. Why don’t you pop along for a day at the races before dancing into the evening with the fabulous Happy Mondays in concert for an action packed day out! Happy Mondays formed in 1980 in Salford, Greater Manchester. The original line-up - Shaun Ryder on lead vocals, with brother Paul Ryder on bass, lead guitarist Mark Day, keyboardist Paul Davis, and drummer Gary Whelan. Mark ‘Bez’ Berry later joined

the band onstage during a live performance after befriending Shaun Ryder and served as a dancer and percussionist. Rowetta then joined the band to provide backing vocals in the early 1990s. Their first official release was the ’Forty Five EP' on Factory Records in September 1985. Tony Wilson discovered them and they signed to Factory Records. Their first album ‘Squirrel and G-Man Twenty Four Hour Party People Plastic Face Carnt Smile’ (White Out) released in 1987 and was produced by John Cale. This was followed by two classic albums, ‘Bummed’ in 1988, produced by Martin Hannett. ‘Pills ’n’ Thrills and Bellyaches in 1990 produced by Paul Oakenfold and Steve Osborne which went platinum in the UK

selling more than 350,000 copies. This put the band firmly on the map as one of the most influential bands to come out of the UK in the early 1990s. The album was recorded at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles. Singles ’Step On' and ‘Kinky Afro' from this album both reached number 5 in the UK singles chart. ‘Yes Please!’ followed in 1992, produced by Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth, recorded at Eddy Grant’s studio in Barbados. By the late 1980s the Happy Mondays were an important part of the Manchester music scene. Numerous world tours meant the band had international success as well as massive success in their home country. The line up of the band during this first and most important ten year phase never changed, and the six original members

Shaun Ryder, Paul Ryder, Gary Whelan, Paul Davis, Mark Day and Bez remained together until the first incarnation came to an end in 1994. In 1999 Happy Mondays reformed with founding members Shaun Ryder, Paul Ryder, Gary Whelan and Bez minus Paul Davis and Mark Day. The band toured extensively in the UK and internationally, selling out the 20,000 capacity Manchester Arena and released of a new single, a cover version Thin Lizzy 'The Boys Are Back in Town’. They also provided support for Oasis on their 'Standing on the Shoulder of Giants' arena tour, as well as playing numerous festivals worldwide. The band again ceased their activity in 2001 following the departure of bass player and

A concert in aid of the above charity will be held at the Wheatley Working Men’s Club on Saturday, 12 May 2018. I would like to thank all those who have given their time and expertise in organising this event. There have been a number of other events organised by numerous pubs and clubs and I wish to thank them all for their efforts. The Firefly Cancer Awareness Support Group do magnificent work in organising transport to and from treatment centres, and I am profoundly grateful for the (hopefully) life saving treatment their service has made possible for me personally. Also, I would like to say a special thank you to the volunteer drivers of Firefly who give their time so generously. If any other pubs or clubs wish to organise a similar charity event on behalf of the Firefly Cancer Awareness Support Group, please do not hesitate to contact me for any assistance I can give. Firefly can be contacted on 07738390541 C.Bennett Concert Secretary Wheatley Working Men’s Club 01302 360984 38 Wentworth Road Doncaster 01302 324166 or 07985482428

LAST LAP FOR SHEFFIELD SPEEDWAY ICON Sheffield Speedway icon Simon Stead is preparing to bring the curtain down on a glittering career next week. And he admits it would have been wrong to stage the event, The SS Last Lap, at any of the other clubs he raced for. Stead won the Elite League with Swindon in 2012 and also enjoyed spells with Belle Vue, Coventry and Workington. But it’s Sheffield which is home – both personally and professionally – and he’s pulled together some of the best riders in the world at Owlerton on Sunday March 25 (4pm). Current World Champion Jason Doyle leads the field with 2012 champ Chris Holder, Danish legend Niels Kristian-Iversen, Slovakian star Martin Vaculik, former British GP winner Chris Harris and several Tigers stars. “I guess the line-up I’ve managed to assemble for my meeting is my way of saying thank you to the Sheffield supporters who, in the main, have stuck by me through

thick and thin and to all the other fans up and down the country who love the sport as much as I do,” he said. “I don’t think any of us realistically expect anyone to put everything on the line today, but nevertheless it’s going to be fiercely contested because if you can come out on top in a field like this, it sets you up very nicely for the start of a new season. “I couldn’t have had it at any other track than Owlerton either. “I supported Sheffield as a young kid, I broke into their team fairly early on in my career, I won the league with them as a rider, I worked my up to being the No.1, I was honoured to be club captain and then I went and found myself winning the league again with the Tigers as team manager last season. “It goes without saying that Sheffield Speedway will always hold a special place in my heart right up until the day I die and to have the opportunity to still be involved with the club in such an active manner despite my racing days being done is something I will eternally be grateful for. “This really is a massive year for me. I’m busy with work outside of speedway and I can’t thank James Holland at the Car Specialists

COUNTY SENIOR FOOTBALL with Michael Clarke

Sadly as seems to regularly be the case in 2018, the wintry conditions once again attempted to spoil the fun in the County Senior League. In midweek, the League Cup Semi-Final between Swinton Athletic and Grimethorpe Sports fell foul of the wet weather and was postponed. The game will now 5th April. Then at the weekend all but three fixtures were postponed due to frozen pitches. In the Premier Division, we had one game midweek, as league leaders Frecheville travelled to Oliver’s Mount to take on Handsworth Parramore Reserves. 10 man Frecheville ran-out 2-0 winners with goals from

enough for being so understanding and allowing me to be so flexible with the time I can take off with how hectic things are there.” Stead started and finished his career with silverware in Sheffield colours. “We had a great few years, winning the league in 1999 and again in 2002 as well as having an abundance of trophies as well,” he said. “I was lucky enough to ride with Sean Wilson who was a great captain, a fantastic No.1 and somebody I learnt a lot from. “To be able to come back and emulate some of that success later in my career before calling it a day at my hometown club was an amazing finish. “I boxed it off with winning the PLRC in front of my home fans and being able to draw a line under it there and then was quite special really.”

Ben Furniss and Leon Howarth. Frecheville go four points clear with the victory. On Saturday goals from Charles Tunnard and Matthew Harrison gave Oughtibridge WMFC a 2-0 home win over Denaby Main. The win sees Oughtibridge into sixth positions. There were two games in Division One on Saturday. League leaders Dodworth Miners Welfare 16 game 100% league record came to an end at St George’s Park, as they were beaten 2-1 by Kiveton Park. Goals from Richard Gorman and Joshua Shepherd gave Kiveton their first home win since November 18th. A Ross Bateman hat-trick helped AFC Dronfield to a 4-2 home win against Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves. The win pushes Dronfield into third position in the table.

WARNE PROUD AS MILLERS BOUNCE BACK

Millers boss Paul Warne was quick to express his pride at his side’s three-goal victory over Northampton Town thanks to goals from Michael Smith, David Ball and Richie Towell. At a snowy Sixfields Stadium, the Millers banished the memory of back-to-back league defeats to record a comfortable victory in front of a thousand plus Millers following. Speaking to the assembled media afterwards, Warne believed his side were worthy winners in Northamptonshire, in testing playing conditions.

“I’m very pleased,” Warne enthused. “I thought our performance was very good. After a couple of defeats, we needed to put a flag back into the ground and we performed very well today. We limited them to very few chances and then got three good goals ourselves, which was hugely pleasing.” Warne was quick to praise an all-round team performance against their relegation haunted hosts but the Millers boss singled out the performance of his strike pair Smith and Ball, who were a constant menace in the final third, as both players capped fine individual performances with well-taken strikes. “It’s nice that both my strikers scored,” Warne added. “I thought Smudge was virtually unplayable today. I thought he was excellent. I thought Will Vaulks, who played centre-half was very good while Matty (Palmer), who played his first game for a while, showed how he can control a game, in the second-half of the game.”

MARQUIS: WE DESERVED THE WIN John Marquis believes the win over Bradford City could help Rovers to push up the Sky Bet League One table for the remainder of the season. The No.9 netted a double to take his tally for the season to 12 in all competitions, and felt Rovers were good value for the three points. He said: “The win is very important, I thought we played well for large spells in the game and apart from the one we cleared off the line we didn’t allow them many chances. “We’ve kept clean sheets in three of our past

four games now so we’re building some consistency, and to get two goals for myself was pleasing personally. “We’ve had to adapt and get the ball forward a bit quicker rather than playing out from the back, and it’s two bits of quality from us which have won us the game.” The deadline has now passed for Marquis to pick up a two-match suspension for reaching 10 yellow cards, and he says he has had to show maturity to ensure he didn’t pick up anymore bookings.

FERGUSON HAPPY WITH HARD FOUGHT WIN

“I’m delighted, it’s a big win for us, the last two home games have seen us score five goals, collect six points and get two clean sheets. It was all about the result and nothing else, and at the business end of the season that’s what it’s all about,” he said. “At this stage of the season there is a lot riding on games, the pitches make it difficult because of the recent weather, you’re not going to see many spectacles at this point, but we just have to find a way of winning and we’ve done that here. “I thought our concentration as a team was good, the communication was good, and we tweaked a few things at the break which we did really well in the second half.” Both goals came inside the last 15 minutes of what was a scrappy encounter with the Bantams, and Ferguson was happy to see his Rovers side take on board his advice at the interval and used it to their advantage later on in the game.

Darren Ferguson was pleased with his side’s persistence as Rovers beat Bradford City 2-0 at the Keepmoat Stadium. A John Marquis brace earned Rovers back-toback wins at the Keepmoat Stadium, as well as a vital three points as they head towards the final stretch of the season.

PERFECT RESPONSE, SAYS DAVID

David Ball says Saturday’s victory at Northampton Town was the perfect response to the recent back-to-back defeats. The Millers found top gear once more after a terrific away performance following goals from Michael Smith, Ball and Richie Towell. The victory further cements the Millers’ place inside the play-off positions, and goalscorer Ball admits the team’s response was of the highest order after their recent set-back. Club News FREEVIEW | Warne proud as Millers bounce back 19 March 2018 “All credit to the lads after two defeats to come to Northampton against a team that are struggling, to win 3-0 is really good.,” Ball said after the game. “It is a tough part of the season. It is the last 10 games so everyone somewhere has something to play for, so coming to these places is tough. Certainly we did really well to come back like that after two defeats.” After dropping out of the starting 11 at MK Dons recently, Ball returned to the side to great effect at Sixfields by notching the second goal, his ninth in all competitions this season. Ball rekindled his partnership with Smith, and the ex-Fleetwood ace admits that the duo continue to go from strength-to-strength, whilst he also acknowledged the work by both wingers which helped him secure the second goal. “There have been good signs there,” Ball admitted. “Michael is a big lad but he is good with his feet. I am telling the lads to use him more to his feet and I can get off the front. Matty Palmer came in and was a calming influence in terms of on the ball, and I certainly got a lot of the ball, more than usual. “It was a cross from Fordey. I got the first flick on and then it has come out to Ryan Williams and he has put it back in again. Obviously working with Rich O’Donnell, who is a great lad, in training I know him well, so I took it early and it took him by surprise and it went in. “We are taking each game as it comes, and just trying to beat whoever is in front of us. We go in to try and win every game and we’ll see where we are right at the end of the season.”

He added: “It hasn’t played on my mind too much over the past few games, the manager spoke to me and told me not to get into situations which I didn’t need to on the pitch. “I think I’ve showed some maturity to not get booked and I haven’t stopped putting myself

MILLERS LAUNCH DISABLED SUPPORTERS’ ASSOCIATION Rotherham United were delighted to launch our new Disabled Supporters’ Association at our recent home game with Rochdale. Millers Chairman Tony Stewart was on hand to meet the group’s new elected Chairperson Joanne Archer, to lend his support to the new group who are meeting regularly to discuss how we can maintain our high standards and also improve the Rotherham United experience for our disabled supporters. The launch of the group coincided with the club supporting the Level Playing Field Week of Action. The Weeks of Action were established in 2005 to help highlight the positive initiatives undertaken by clubs, sporting venues and their governing bodies in partnership with disabled sports fans and disabled supporters associations (DSAs). The 2018 Weeks of Action theme is all about celebrating the matchday experience for disabled fans. Head of Supporters’ Services John Bird, who has been active in the establishing of the new group, expressed his delight after its recent launch: “We are always looking to ensure that everyone can enjoy the matchday experience here at Rotherham United and many of the improvements that we have made in that area have come as a result of feedback from supporters,” he explained. “I am delighted to have been involved in the launch of our new Disabled Supporters’ Association and I’m looking forward to working closely with Joanne and the rest of the group. “From some of our earlier meetings, our numbers have grown but we are still looking to add new members and anyone wanting to join can contact us by email on officialrudsa@gmail.com.”

“There wasn’t a massive amount of quality in the game, it was very tight and I felt we were a bit too precise in the first half with what we were trying to do, and we spoke at half time about wanting to find our width and the first goal showed that,” he said. “The first goal might have looked easy for John to score, but you have to keep your composure there, and then the second on the counter was another bit of quality, and the two passes from James Coppinger and Alfie Beestin really opened them up. “The key was the two pieces of quality and they were two really good goals, it was probably the best bit of quality in the whole game, the first goal was a great ball in by Niall Mason and there is John in the middle doing what John does so well and that’ll do him good.”

SNOW GOALS TO SHOW FRUSTRATED CHRIS United and Forest played out an entertaining stalemate in minus temperatures on Saturday afternoon. And the point for the Blades was the least their efforts deserved, as Chris Wilder’s side made it four games unbeaten at Bramall Lane, against opponents, who themselves are on a decent unbeaten run. For the clash against Forest, boss Wilder made two changes. Clarke and Leonard returned to the starting XI, with Basham and Wilson missing out, with Wright being named amongst the substitutes. On a bitterly cold afternoon, with snow swirling round the Lane, Clarke almost warmed things up nicely in United’s first attack, but Pantilimon

palmed his header to safety from Fleck’s cross following a short corner on the right. In the 13th minute, United through Clarke came even closer, but in the second phase, with Fleck again the provider, the striker headed wide with the goal at his mercy. The Blades continued to make the running, with Evans firing over from a promising position on the edge of the box. Next to have a go was Fleck, who almost wrongfooted Pantilimon. With the clocking ticking to half-time and with the visitors not clearing their lines, Evans floated an effort narrowly over the bar. In response, Blackman was down smartly to his right to deny Cash, who had stolen the ball off Stevens high up the pitch. Fox became

the first booking of the game before the break, following a tangle with Blackman, as the Blades stopper looked to launch a counter attack. The first action of note in the second-half saw Pantilimon save from Baldock’s cross, with the goalkeeper picking up a knock in the process. At the other end, Blackman saved the Blades twice in as many minutes, denying Dowell with an excellent low stop, before parrying an effort from Murphy round the post. The game had really opened up and this time the Blades were on the attack, but Duffy fired over. On the hour, Wilder made a change, with Brooks replacing skipper Sharp. An unfortunate slip from Evans saw Forest break, but Murphy shot

into the side netting from Brereton’s pass. A second substitution promoted a change of formation, with Holmes replacing Leonard. As the final ten minutes approached, following a clearing of snow from the pitch, Blackman was again required, the time to deny Brereton, with Stearman deny Colback. United’s final change, saw Donaldson replace Duffy. Five minutes of added time were signalled, as the snow began swirling round the Lane again. Fleck stung the palms of Pantilimon, before being booked for challenging Tomlin. But despite the efforts of both sets of players to beat the freezing conditions and find a goal, it ended all square.

Chris Wilder was frustrated that his side didn’t produce more quality in the final third in Saturday’s goalless draw with Nottingham Forest at Bramall Lane. An entertaining clash, played in artic conditions ended with the spoils shared on an afternoon where two towering goalkeepers both kept deserved clean sheets. The Blades boss remarked: “We’ve set the standards high, but we didn’t deserve to win the game in what were difficult conditions for both sets of players. It was a great crowd and you want to send them home happy, but we didn’t show any sort of quality in the final third, we didn’t produce a

that decisive cross, pass or finish or show that ability to decide the game in our favour. Leon should score what is a straightforward chance but we had other opportunities and we’ve dropped too many points like this, from games where there is nothing in it really.” Wilder added: “The second-half was endto-end, like a game of basketball, because I wanted us to go and win the game. We opened up, but they’d got the likes of Tomlin and other who could open us up and in the end we needed Jamal (Blackman) to make sure we got a point.”

A TRIO OF CAPTAINS FANTASTIC The Blades are delighted to announce a very special and exclusive sporting evening of “Blades Captains” in the luxurious 1889 Suite at Bramall Lane on Friday 6th April. Crowd favourites Paul Stancliffe, Rob Page and Chris Morgan will be our special guests for the event and doors will open at 7pm for fans to mingle and meet before a one-course dinner is served at 7.30pm. All three will then take centre stage for a Q and A session led by club historian and engagement officer John Garrett, looking at the careers all three had as Blades, talking in detail about the highs, the lows, the laughs and also the tears. The captains for the evening: • Paul ‘Stan’ Stancliffe joined the Blades from Rotherham United, signed by Ian Porterfield, he became a muchrespected skipper, playing a key part in two

promotions. • Rob ‘Pagey’ Page came through the ranks at Watford before Neil Warnock persuaded the classy defender to make the journey to South Yorkshire where the Wales international would lead the club to the unforgettable ‘Triple Assault’ season. • Chris ‘Morgs’ Morgan cut his fearsome teeth at Barnsley before becoming an iconic leader for the Blades, powering us to the Premier League in 2006 and epitomising the never-say-die attitude of the club and its fans. Three very different characters, but all still ooze red, white and black blood through their veins and have a special love for the club that they all served with such

distinction. This will be a real cracker of a night and a fantastic way to warm up for the following day’s South Yorkshire Derby between the Blades and Barnsley at Oakwell! Booking Details Tickets are available from the Commercial Department and are priced at £45 per head or a table of 10 can be booked for £425. All prices are inclusive of VAT. A WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY? WEEKLY BLADES COLUMN BY ANDREW SMITH Ryan Leonard made an impressive return to the Blades’ starting XI in the 0-0 draw against Forest. One of four signings in the window, we have only seen Lee Evans so far establish himself as a regualr member of the side. James Wilson has been beset by injury niggles, while Ricky Holmes has yet to show the fans his true worth, as Mark Duffy and the returning David Brookes have remained ahead of him in the pecking order, whether starting the game or coming on as Wilder’s first choice change on the hour mark. However the early arrival of Chris Basham’s baby

gave Ryan a chance to make his mark on the team, albeit in the unaccustomed role of centre back. Against an occasionally impressive attacking side with little to play for but pride, he defended solidly and kept the team driving forward with surgung runs into the opposition half, and well-chosen passes which invariably found their man. If United are to at least maintain their challenge for the last couple of playoff spots, strength in depth will be key. The busy Easter programme is followed by three games in eight days including what is

rapidly looking like a season-defining game - home against Middlesbrough - with Cardiff, Bristol City and Preston all due to face the Blades on the run-in. You still feel that nine of the players pick themselves, with Chris still perhaps looking for the best strike partnership from the options at his disposal. Certainly some of the bench and fringe players will be looking to force themselves into his thinking before the season ends, as there will no doubt be movement in and out whichever division the club find themselves in next year.

ONE BIG WIN Owls manager Jos Luhukay was happy to see his side come away with a 2-1 win against Leeds at Elland Road in snowy conditions. Atdhe Nuhiu opened the scoring for Wednesday in the second half before Jay-Roy Grot levelled for the hosts. Nuhiu grabbed a welcome winner for the Owls in injury time to confirm their first double over Leeds in the league since 1959/60. Luhukay said: “Today we have a good feeling to come away with one big win. “The fans deserved it today, they put everything behind the

team and helped us get the win. “We had players back from injury and they made a big difference to the team. “Atdhe was fantastic today, he is working very hard every day and getting the rewards for

his efforts.” Wednesday now have a two-week gap in the schedule now due to the international break and Luhukay is looking forward to seeing more new faces coming back from the injury bay. He added: “When you

win you sometimes want another game so we can keep going, but unfortunately that is not the case. “The players will get a chance to rest and we should see more players back with us, hopefully Marco Matias and Fernando Forestieri. “Then we will play Preston at home and we must play as well as we did today to get another good result.”

A LIFT FOR THE TEAM Sam Hutchinson made a seamless return to action in Saturday’s Yorkshire derby at Elland Road. From the first minute, the popular midfielder was right in the thick of the action with his trademark challenges and 100% commitment. The 28-year-old provided key ingredients required for the derby affair and he told swfc. co.uk; “I enjoyed that, it was obviously hard work coming back but it was good to get 65 under my belt, the gaffer has looked after me. “I’ve felt ready for a while but as much as I moan, I felt good out there. “I know there isn’t long left of the season but we fought as a team, it felt good and we need to see more of that. “I try to do my bit and get a bit of oomph into the game because it looked like we were maybe missing that over the last couple of weeks. “We haven’t been winning games and when that happens

you can get low on confidence. “I don’t struggle on that side of things with mentality and confidence because of everything I have been through, and I just try to impose myself on the game.” Barry Bannan also made a welcome return for Wednesday, replacing Hutchinson just past the hour. The former Chelsea man continued: “I hope that gives everybody a lift because we are big parts of the team. “If something isn’t working, you need a lift. We got a win away at Leeds at Elland Road and that is something I have not done with Sheffield Wednesday before. “It was a good result, we are happy with the result but we can play a lot better and we will have to play better because we don’t want to be where we are at. “We don’t want to finish 17th or 18th, that’s not good enough, nowhere near, not with the players we have so we have to keep going.”
