DONCASTER COUNCIL APPROVE QUALITY STREETS IMPROVEMENTS Doncaster Council’s vision to rejuvenate two key streets in the town centre into vibrant areas has been approved by Cabinet. The £2 million Quality Streets scheme will see significant improvements made to Hall Gate and Silver Street. The proposed changes will see Hall Gate transformed into a pedestrian friendly area. The road will be narrowed to make it one way to all traffic and the pavements will be upgraded and made wider. This will create more outside space for businesses to have alfresco areas. Bus stops will be
improved, dedicated cycle lanes installed and existing parking bays removed. Silver Street will become a fully pedestrian area with the street closed to all traffic and loading bays and the taxi rank removed. This will have great benefits for businesses allowing them to create alfresco areas and visitors and residents will be able to enjoy the space and new attractions free from traffic. The proposal also includes introducing unique lighting to help build vibrancy to the area. The lighting will be themed for different events such as the
Tour de Yorkshire or St Leger and this will help to create a real buzz in the town centre. The proposals will not only bring vibrancy to the area but it is anticipated the development will bring new employment opportunities and inward investment to Doncaster. The redevelopment of Hall Gate and Silver Street will help turn this area into the Innovation Quarter which was detailed in the Urban Centre Masterplan. The scheme will be funded by the council and is seeking another £1.35million from
REGIONAL EDITION
the Sheffield City Region Growth Fund (SCRIF). Cllr Bill Mordue, Cabinet Member for Business, Skills and Economic Development, said: “The proposals for Hall Gate and Silver Street will help rejuvenate the area and help businesses diversify their offer. This is another example of the Urban Centre Masterplan coming to fruition, showing that Doncaster is moving in the right direction and delivering on its ambitious regeneration plans. “Currently on Silver Street, one side of the road houses bars and
night clubs and the other side eateries. This creates a conflict between pedestrians and traffic, as people move from one side of the road to the other. By pedestrianising this area we will remove this barrier making the area safer and at the same time we will bring a real vibrancy into this part of the town centre. “We are currently speaking to all the businesses situated on Hall Gate and Silver Street, to gather their views about the proposals. We have also spoken to taxi drivers and seeking residents’ views that live in accommodation on
these streets. The feedback we have received so far has been positive and they are in favour
of the changes. We anticipate that works will begin in late summer.”

COUNCIL ANNOUNCE INVESTMENT TO IMPROVE LOCAL AIR QUALITY Sheffield and Rotherham Councils this week announced record new levels of investment in tackling air pollution. £2m will be invested from the “Early Measure Fund”. The successful bid will start to fund a package of ‘Early Measures’ to meet the ambitious standards set out in Sheffield’s Air Quality Strategy. Councillor Jack Scott, Cabinet Member for Transport and Sustainability said, “I’m delighted we are working with our
partners in Rotherham and making this record investment in cleaner, safer air. The investment we are making mean we will be able to make big progress in specific areas and tackle air pollution much more effectively. “This huge investment in the week that we launched our Green City Strategy, shows that Sheffield City Council is committed to tackling this dangerous air, especially as it comes on top of our £1.9m investment in 115 cleaner, greener buses
we announced month. “Sheffield Council has always believed that dangerous, polluted air is a public health crisis in this country, which is why we supplied evidence that persuaded the High Court to rule the government’s plans were unlawful and inadequate. “So whilst I’m pleased the Government has assisted with this project, there is still so much further for them to go if British people are to have the clean air they are entitled to.
/THEMERCURYNEWSPAPER
“I will now ensure we use this investment to deliver the best solution for people in Sheffield. But the bottom line is we need the government to go much further in matching our commitment and at the moment they are falling far short.” Today’s announcement will mean a number of quick wins for Sheffield and Rotherham councils. For Sheffield, it will see the introduction of Public Electric Vehicle Charging Points, an electric Taxi leasing
trial, junction signal improvements to tackle known congestion issues and funding for public engagement and campaigns, building on the existing Air Aware Sheffield campaign. The cleaner air from reduced exhaust emissions will be further enhanced by reduced traffic levels from more drivers on buses, cycles and other sustainable transport. Later work will support the delivery of the measures which are likely to be recommended by the main feasibility study the councils are currently undertaking to improve air quality in the shortest possible time.

ALBERT SNODGRASS I’m dating an Italian bricklayer. It’s cement to be.
My boss told me that I need to start taking my job a bit more seriously. I was so shocked I nearly fell off my unicycle. This morning at work my boss told me to “have a great day”. So I’m going to the pub. My Mrs has recently started eating sofas... It’s weird... but then again she’s always had a suite tooth. As I was sat at my desk earlier, my boss crept in and sat in the corner. “Don’t mind me” he said. “Pretend I’m not here!” So I cracked open a can of lager and phoned my mate in Australia. My wife tried to beat me up with an old Elton John record... I’m still standing. I’ve just heard that vandals have stolen the F from the Funfair sign in our town. Now that is just unfair.

Sheffielders star in stop smoking campaign Two Sheffield men are the face of a new campaign that aims to highlight even more reasons to quit smoking. Despite it being well known that smoking can cause cancer and heart disease, this still does not convince everyone to quit. That is why Paul and Mohammad are hoping to persuade others to join them in quitting by focusing on some of the other health impacts of smoking, such as gum disease and yellow teeth, low energy due to a lack of oxygen, and the effects on senses like taste and smell. The campaign is being launched by Smokefree Sheffield, which has been developed to tackle smoking in our communities, bringing together people with a shared goal of reducing the numbers of smokers in the city. A range of partners including Sheffield City Council, hospitals and local quitting services are working together to achieve a smokefree generation by 2025 and improve the health of the local population. Retired Paul Smith, from Netherthorpe, and security worker Mohammad Akram, who lives in Fir Vale, feature in the campaign aimed at routine and manual workers, who represent one of the largest groups of smokers in the city. Both men were longtime tobacco users until recently before quitting with the
support of Yorkshire Smokefree Sheffield – with Paul having smoked for over 60 years. Paul said: “Cancer, heart and lung disease are often mentioned when we talk about smoking, but I think it is important know that smoking can affect you in more ways than you think. “Not long ago I was smoking 20 cigars a day and I never thought about the impact on my gums or my teeth until the damage was done. Suddenly, I hated looking in the mirror every morning and seeing the state of my teeth and receding gums. “Quitting back in October also brought back my sense of smell and taste, meaning I could enjoy my food again, so there were plenty of incentives for me to stop.” Mohammad said: “Smoking left my teeth yellow, and gums black. It also left me feeling tired, drained and lethargic. “Since quitting, I have a lot more strength and energy, and with 4 kids to keep up with, it was such an important reason for me to get smokefree.” Greg Fell, Director of Public Health at Sheffield City Council, said: “Through Smokefree Sheffield and local stop smoking services, we are helping as many people as possible to quit for good. “This new campaign focuses on some of the other reasons to quit that can have a real
impact on people’s lives. When we talked to local people, they told us that highlighting the effects of smoking that affect their appearance, such as gum disease, would motivate them to get support, just like Paul and Mohammad.” Cllr Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure, said: “Smokefree Sheffield is helping to raise awareness of all the reasons to stop smoking and all the local services that can offer advice and practical support. “You’re four times more likely to quit with the support of a stop smoking service and using stop smoking medication. Regardless of when you started or how often you smoke now, there are many services across Sheffield that can help you on your smokefree journey.” Smokefree Sheffield recently announced its support for Yorkshire Cancer Research and Breathe 2025’s position on e-cigarettes. They advise smokers who cannot or do not want to stop smoking to completely switch to vaping, following research from Public Health England that shows e-cigarettes are a significantly safer alternative to smoking tobacco. LOOK AFTER YOUR BACK - TOP TIPS TO AVOID PROBLEMS What’s causing your back pain? Here are 8 common triggers! It could all be down to a little muscle you’ve probably never heard of - the psoas. Putting up with twinges or aches in our backs seems to just be part of life for many people. Back pain is very common, around one in three of us get it every year, with the lower back being the most affected. While many people resort to overthe-counter painkillers, or a trip to the chiropractor when the pain becomes unmanageable, it’s important to understand the causes rather than just treat the symptoms. People will treat the pain rather than the problem and it’s rare that people act upon it straight away. They say, ‘It will pass, it will pass.’ When it doesn’t – two, three, four weeks later – that’s when they start to take some action. But at that point, there’s already damage. Here are some of the common issues which often lead to back problems.
developing at some point: Your age What causes your back pain often depends upon your age, and as people get older, the pain tends to become more severe. A young person usually has pain caused by a joint, or they’ll have pulled a muscle, while an older person in their mid-50s or early 60s will be more likely to have a disc that’s degenerated. And eventually, later on in life, because the spine has no more suspension, it becomes a boney pain. Like a toothache you feel inside your spine. Discs, not muscles It’s actually really rare that it’s just muscles, unless it’s a young person. Usually it’ll be a combination of things, joints and muscles, and very often, discs. An injury Most people in their mid-20s up to 50s will have one episode in their life where they’ll have hurt themselves, like skiing or football. After that once episode they’ll start to tear discs. It could be dormant, sometimes for 10, 15, 20 years, but once
REMEMBERING THE SEAFARERS
DIY - DON’T DABBLE WITH ELECTRICS!
The world’s oldest maritime welfare charity is asking churches in Sheffield to remember the world’s seafarers in a special service. Congregations from around the world will take part in Sea Sunday services on July 8 in aid of Sailors’ Society. Each year, the Christian charity, which celebrated its 200th birthday on March 18, asks churchgoers to pray and give thanks for the world’s 1.6m seafarers. Stuart Rivers, Sailors’ Society’s CEO, said: “Whether they know it or not, the people of Sheffield rely upon seafarers. More than 90 per cent of everything we own comes by sea – our clothes, phones, cars – even the bricks that make up our homes. All of these goods are brought into the country by seafarers who risk extreme loneliness, dangerous storms and even piracy. Holding a Sea Sunday service for Sailors’ Society is a fantastic way of recognising the amazing work seafarers do.” The charity has created a variety of resources for churches, which it has made available free to download at www.seasundayhero.org. The resource pack includes a sermon outline, PowerPoint, videos, posters and Sunday School lesson plan and activities.

the pain starts, it doesn’t go away. At this point there’s a lot of damage that has already happened. The outer third of the discs is the only part where you’ll feel pain - you could have cracks in the inner part of the disc and not feel it. So pain is not necessarily a good indicator. Long hours spent sitting In the inner part each of the discs in our spine there’s liquid made up of water and a substance called proteoglycan. This is the food for the cartilage. Little cells in the end plates secrete the liquid but they’ll only be activated if there’s movement between the vertebrae. So therefore, if someone is sitting down on a chair for eight hours a day, the body will not feel the need to secrete the liquid into the discs – the discs will starve themselves. The body will adapt to make the cartilage weaker, because it doesn’t need to be strong because it doesn’t move much. Then when a person moves more on the weekend, and does something active like gardening, it puts them at risk of injury because they now have weaker discs – that’s why moving enough, all the time, is so important. THE NEW WORLD TRADING COMPANY RAISES £100K+ FOR CHARITY The New World Trading Company (NWTC) is proud to reveal that in 2017, teams across the company raised more than £100,000 for charity. NWTC has over 1000 employees and operates 20 unique venues including The Botanist sites in Sheffield’s Leopold Square, Trinity Leeds and Stonegate York. Money raised in 2017 went straight to charity
partners Barnardo’s, the UK’s leading children’s charity, the Tim Bacon Foundation, who support charities in the fight against Cancer, as well as children’s charities local to each venue. Fundraising was achieved through a mixture of sponsored activities completed by employees in their spare time, on site events as well as from sales of limitededition menus. For Barnardo’s, customers were able to get involved by indulging in special items on the menu. NWTC created a show stopping cocktail and sharing desert with £1 from each going straight to the charity. The ‘Carrot Pot Planter Sharer’ dessert was especially popular amongst guests. The dish was created in memory of John Somers, who was sadly turned away

from a full Barnardo’s house in 1867. Tragically, he passed away on the street two days later from malnutrition. John’s nickname was ‘carrots’ due to his red hair so the dessert was created in his honour. As well as promoting charitable dishes, since the start of the partnership, team members from across the company took part in fundraising events in collaboration with Barnardo’s that included skydiving, a dragon boat race and an obstacle race called ‘Rough Runner’. Employees have also used their knowledge to teach children mindfulness, food skills, and even built greenhouses in local communities where children can grow fruit and vegetables. Over £40,000 was raised for the children’s charity thanks to the determination of NWTC teams. For the Tim Bacon Foundation, £18,000 was raised through events and donations. The Oast House in Manchester organised a cinema night and generated funds through sales of blankets to tote bags. Other NWTC sites offered charity cocktails locally, and ran fundraiser pub quizzes. Across all 20 sites in January, £1 was added to customers’ bills as an optional charity donation. Throughout the country, NWTC raised an amazing £53,000 for local children’s charities and hospices. For every dish ordered from the kid’s menus at each site, NWTC donated 25p directly to local children’s charity. During December, £1 was also added to the bill to raise further funds. Katie Longbottom, Human Resources Project Manager said: “We pride ourselves on having a dedicated team so it’s great to see them engage with our chosen charities. We’re excited for what this year will bring and can’t wait to see our team work together to give back to local and national charities.”

ROYAL WEDDING: PUB HOURS EXTENDED FOR CELEBRATIONS
Pubs will be allowed to stay open later than usual to give everyone a chance to celebrate Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding. Licensing hours can be extended over a “celebration period” to mark an occasion of exceptional international, national or local significance. It means pubs and bars across England and Wales can keep serving until 1am on the morning of the wedding day, and again after the couple are married. The wedding takes place on 19 May. Hours will be extended to 1am, instead of the usual 11pm, on the nights of Friday
18 May and Saturday 19 May without pubs having to apply for an extension. The wedding takes place on the same day as the FA Cup final. Home Secretary Amber Rudd stressed that there have been no reports of “increased disorder” as a result of previous extensions to licensing hours, which have also coincided with major football fixtures. “The royal wedding is a chance for communities across the country to join together and celebrate this momentous and happy occasion for our royal family and for our nation,” she said.
“As shown by the support for the proposal to extend licensing hours, it’s clear that the public back the idea of having more time to raise a glass to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on a day of national celebration.” The Licensing Act 2003 has been used for a number of occasions, including Prince William’s wedding in 2011, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012 and the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations in 2016. The latest extension was welcomed by Brigid Simmonds, chief executive of the British Beer and Pub Association. She said: “We are
delighted with the Government’s decision to extend licensing hours in the on-trade for the royal wedding. “This will allow the nation to celebrate

and raise a glass to Harry and Meghan in a responsible manner, whilst giving a timely boost to the great British beer and pub sector.”
CAMRA WARNS STORM BREWING FOR PUBS UNLESS GOVERNMENT ACTS SOON The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) is calling for a new deal for pubs in response to fresh data which reveals 18 pubs are being lost each week. The consumer group says that urgent action is needed to cut the tax burden placed on pubs. Pubs are being hit hard by a triple whammy of one of the highest rates of beer duty across Europe, rapidly rising business rates and VAT. A third of the cost of a pub pint is now made up of various taxes. While temporary business rate relief and a beer duty freeze have been welcome, CAMRA is calling on the Government to implement a fundamental review of the
tax system. Britain's departure from the European Union provides new opportunities to support pubs, such as the potential for lower rates of tax for draught beer sold in pubs. Colin Valentine, CAMRA's National Chairman says: "Pubs are now facing a crippling tax burden, exacerbated by the perfect storm of the last business rates revaluation and a high level of beer duty. From these new pub closure figures, it is clear that a fundamental change is needed if the British pub is to survive for future generations. "As Britain prepares to leave the European Union, the Government has a unique opportunity to update the tax system to
better support pubs, which are a bastion of British culture and at the heart of communities across the country. "We can now look further afield for a new tax deal for the sector. This could include implementing the Australian model of having a lower rate of duty for beer sold in pubs, radically changing the business rates system, or charging a lower rate of VAT for pubs or, even better, all three. "Millions of dedicated pub-goers are looking to the Government to act now to secure the future of the great British pub. We're now challenging the Government to be the most pro-pub in history by seizing this opportunity."

A concert in aid of the above charity will be held at the Wheatley Working Men’s Club on Saturday, 12 May 2018. I would like to thank all those who have given their time and expertise in organising this event. There have been a number of other events organised by numerous pubs and clubs and I wish to thank them all for their efforts. The Firefly Cancer Awareness Support Group do magnificent work in organising transport to and from treatment centres, and I am profoundly grateful for the (hopefully) life saving treatment their service has made possible for me personally. Also, I would like to say a special thank you to the volunteer drivers of Firefly who give their time so generously. If any other pubs or clubs wish to organise a similar charity event on behalf of the Firefly Cancer Awareness Support Group, please do not hesitate to contact me for any assistance I can give. Firefly can be contacted on 07738390541 C.Bennett Concert Secretary Wheatley Working Men’s Club 01302 360984 38 Wentworth Road Doncaster 01302 324166 or 07985482428

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
COUNTY SENIOR FOOTBALL with Michael Clarke
After further disruption from the weather midweek, and another League Cup SemiFinal postponement, the so called “Beast from the East” took the weekend off, which allowed 15 games to get the green light in the County Senior League. Premier Division A Leon Howarth hat-trick helped league leaders Frecheville to a 4-0 away win against Houghton Main. Ben Furniss was also on target for Frecheville. Frecheville’s day got even better, as second placed AFC Penistone Church Reserves could only manage a goalless draw away at Swinton Athletic. Frecheville’s lead now stands at six points, but Penistone do have three games in hand. Third placed Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves were impressive 7-0 winners over Millmoor Juniors at Grange Park. There was a hat-trick that game for Ryan McDonald and a brace for Luke Townsend. A single goal from Jordan Livett was enough to give fourth placed Jubilee Sports a 1-0 win over Oughtibridge WMFC at Oughtibridge War Memorial Ground. There was a further 0-0 draw between Denaby United and South Kirkby Colliery at Old Road, meaning that out of the 10 Premier Division sides in action on Saturday, bizarrely just three managed to score. Midweek, goals from William Hilbert (2) and Alex Rippon gave Handsworth Parramore Reserves a 3-1 win against North Gawber Colliery at Oliver’s Mount.

Division One Dodworth Miners Welfare bounced back from their first loss of the season quickly, as they 5-2 away win against Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves. Dodworth’s lead is now almost insurmountable at 27 points. A hat-trick from Matthew Moore helped 10 man Brinsworth Whitehill to a 4-1 win over third placed AFC Dronfield at the Phoenix Sports Club. Silkstone United made it back-to-back league wins, with a 3-1 away win against Caribbean Sports. The win was enough to lift above Stocksbridge Park Steels Development and off the foot-of-the-table. Kiveton Park followed up last weeks’ win over previously unbeaten league leaders Dodworth, with a 4-1 win against Stocksbridge Park Steels Development at the Look Local Stadium. Kiveton are up to fifth place with the three points. Division Two Burngreave FC were 8-2 winners against Sheffield Bankers Reserves at the Firvale Academy. Burngreave lead the way by six points. Second placed Boynton Sports were also big winners, with 5-1 away win over North Gawber Collliery Reserves. Third placed New Bohemians made it five wins from seven games, with a 3-2 win against Thurcroft Miners Institute at the Thurcroft Hub. New Bohemians are just a point behind second place. Manor Hotel claimed a hard-fought three points with a 1-0 win over Working Wonders at the Dorothy Hyman Stadium. Manor Hotel have claimed 19 points of the 24 available to them in 2018, a run that has seen them climb into fifth place. Goals from Joshua Care and Sam Lee were enough to give Wombwell Main Development a 2-1 away win over Maltby Main Reserves. AFC Dronfield Reserves shared the spoils as they drew 1-1 with Swinton Athletic Reserves at Gosforth Playing Fields.
I very nearly lost my fishing mojo earlier this week, for a variety of reasons, not least, because like many other anglers, I’m struggling a bit at the moment. The weather has really knocked the fishing off on my local venues, and my success last time out with a dozen double figure carp was a ‘one off’ as temperatures fluctuated yet again between overnight frosts and snow. In truth, I’m sick of winter now, it feels as though it’s been cold and wet for at least eight months, and I can’t wait for it to change! It’s not just the weather that gets my goat, it’s so called anglers too. I spend much of my working week on Facebook and other social media platforms, reading through a wide variety of posts made by others, and as the temperatures have stayed low, the amount of absolutely disgusting things posted by fellow anglers has got higher. I can only put it down to frustration, but I think it goes a little deeper than that. For some reason, some small number of anglers think they have a ‘presence’, or that their opinion is the only one that has any validity. I’m not sure why. Perhaps it’s ‘sponsorship’ or some other perceived privilege that gives these few an ego, but it doesn’t excuse basic common decency. We ALL go fishing to enjoy it, and for no other reason, so why come home and try and spoil it for others? I don’t think any particular sector of the angling world can claim to be any better than others either; I’ve seen carpers, match anglers, lure anglers and river anglers all bickering this week, and frankly, it’s nothing short of laughable… until you get the threats. Threats. Anglers are threatening each other over fish! Yes, really! If that isn’t ridiculous, then I don’t know what is… I noted this week a post from an angler, a ‘sponsored’ advocate, that intimated that anglers from a certain other brand should die. Yes, should actually die. Whether said in jest (it’s not funny) or otherwise, I was appalled; is that where we’re at now? Suggesting that anglers should die because of what they use, or where they fish? Can you see now why I despaired this week? That one post said far more about the poster than anything else, and is a very poor reflection of any angler… My mum once advised to “either say something nice, or keep my trap shut”, and as a result, I try to encourage other anglers, congratulate them on impressive catches, and offer advice where I can, and it makes ME feel better. Try it, offer a compliment per day, and see the response you get… There is a reason why big name anglers such as Julian Cundiff, Ian Russell and Alan Blair are popular, it’s because they take time to be nice to people… if you want to be respected as an angler and a person, then take note… Anyway, back on the bank, I’m still a blanker. A session on the same water where I had success last week returned nought, and what made it worse was the angler next to me (a good friend) catching as I packed up, and then messaging me to rub salt in with another fish. I tried everything and couldn’t buy a bite on a water where fish are fickle after cold weather and retreat to the unreachable centre of the lake until late in the day. It didn’t help to alleviate my gloom either, but a trip the following
ORCHARD PARK
day promised to lighten my mood as I returned to a water I fell in love with last year and couldn’t wait to get back to! Rode Pool is an estate lake on the Stoke-on-Trent Angling Society card. It’s a tricky pool, over nine hundred yards long, with fishing on one bank, for a distance of one third of it’s length. The result is that fish have plenty of room to hide, and a capture is well deserved! I fished it over summer for tench and bream and had a superb few months catching bream to almost ten pounds, with tench to almost eight pounds in idyllic surroundings. I have no idea exactly what makes it so captivating, whether it’s the solitude of sitting amongst ancient woodland, the myriad of bird life both on and off the water, the wildlife, the mystery, or the quality of fish within, but I absolutely adore the place, and feel relaxed as soon as I open the gate…bliss. I arrived to find a regular chum fishing in his favoured peg 1. I hadn’t seen him for a few months, so after a handshake and a quick chat I was off through the woods to the other end of the lake. He told me of four blank sessions so far, without a fish being seen, so although I wasn’t confident, I was determined to kick back, relax, and rediscover my mojo. I reprised the tactics of last year, casting a couple of method feeders towards the far bank, tight to a line of sedges, just starting to poke green shoots against the brown of last years growth, and sat back to enjoy a cup of tea. After an hour of silence, I recast, and had another brew, and the cycle continued all day without a fish; rebait, recast, drink tea. I wasn’t bothered, the venue is astonishing, peaceful, tranquil, and packed with things to see. As another friend approached at the end of the day, we stood together in silence and watched teal, little egret and more flap across the far bank, then chatted about barn owl, long tailed duck, squirrels and more as the dusk gathered and the bats started to flit about the darkening sky. It’s that kind of place, what real fishing is to me, a place of beauty with rewards to be had for the lucky, and even if you don’t catch, there is still enjoyment to be had, and peace to be found or shared with friends. I’ve got my mojo back, and I’m looking forward to the weather warming so I can amongst the fine tench and bream within. As for my chum in peg 1, I know you caught a carp the other day, but I respect your right to silence, and we’re still friends, nor will I tell anyone I know… after all, I wouldn’t want Facebook anglers to find out, would I?

EASTER WEEKEND A GOOD MARKER FOR MILLERS, SAYS BALL Rotherham United hitman David Ball says the Easter weekend fixtures are likely to be a good marker for him and his teammates for their final standing in Sky Bet League One at the end of the season. Speaking ahead of the clash with his former club Peterborough United on Good Friday, Ball explained that the close proximity of Posh and Easter Monday’s opponents Charlton Athletic in the third tier table mean that there is added incentive to collect points, as Warne’s side look to firm up their place in the Play-off shakeup. The 28-year-old reiterated that everyone in the Millers camp is aware of the magnitude of the upcoming clashes, as they look to put Saturday’s defeat at Southend United behind them. “All the lads know how important this weekend can be,” he told www.themillers. co.uk. “In past seasons you usually see it come down to around the Easter weekend to see where you want to be. “They are kind of six points games in terms of looking at these being teams that want to get into the Play-offs. If we can get a win on Friday it will give us a breather in the sense of Peterborough catching us and again, a win at Charlton could help us to see them off as well.” Ball continued to explain that he felt that the experience of Chris Powell’s Southend side gave them the advantage at Roots Hall on a tricky pitch, but was quick to add that the Millers players had been properly briefed ahead of the trip to Essex.

STANCLIFFE PRAISES YOUNG ROVERS SIDE Paul Stancliffe praised his side’s resilience as they beat local rivals Rotherham United 1-0 in the South Yorkshire derby. The U18s boss thought his side thoroughly deserved the victory after their battling performance, and says he was impressed with his relatively young side. He said: “All victories are usually pleasing, but this was hard-fought, we expected to come under pressure from Rotherham, but I thought we stood up to it really well, especially as we had a younger team.
“The system was something we had played before, we felt that with the injuries and lads we’ve got out it was the best way to go and to be fair Ben Blythe’s come in, U16, he’s a centre-half who’s coming in next season, he’s the only centre-half we’ve got who’s fit so we just felt that was the best way to go. “Branden’s not a centre-back, although he can play there, but he’s played on the right and he’s a left-footer. Jacob’s a left-footed player, Ben’s a left-footed player, so we’ve had that unbalance if you like but I thought the back
three were outstanding today nonetheless.” Stancliffe, who has one eye on next season, has told his players to set themselves targets in the closing stages of the season and praised the attitude of his team. He added: “I said to the lads in the changing rooms before today’s game, they should be setting themselves targets, if we can keep that going, it will look quite promising for next season honestly. “To be fair you’re never quite sure with young players, how they’re going to be on the day and how they’ll react but they’re a great bunch and they work ever so hard. “They listen to what’s asked of them and they try to put it into practice and that’s all you can ask for from young players – these guys do it. Yes, they make mistakes. Yes, we get frustrated on the side, but we think their heading in the right direction which is the main thing.”

Store manager Andrew Falkiner said that upon coming to Doncaster, forming a partnership with Club Doncaster was high on their agenda. “We opened our store in Doncaster because of the important transport and rail links, and the growth of the distribution industry and trades in the area. “Soon after opening we formed a link with Club Doncaster for the successful 2016/17 season, because they an important focal point of the Doncaster community and great vehicle for increasing public awareness of our presence. “We were very happy with the response we got from our first season in partnership with Club Doncaster and were happy to renew for the
2017/18 season, to hopefully continue to grow our business and help the Rovers on to bigger and better things at the same time.” Dickies Workwear was one of the first companies to sign up to the new Official Partnership programme with Club Doncaster when in launched in the summer of 2017. Annabelle Foster, partnership executive at Club Doncaster, says after a successful first year the club was looking forward to a busy summer recruiting new commercial partners. She said: “We have enjoyed working with Dickies immensely this season, due to the proactive nature in which they try to do business in the town. “The partnership between Dickies and Club Doncaster has a great range of different advertising and promotional benefits and the team at Dickies have certainly made the most of the opportunities available to them.
A worldwide brand in the provision of top quality workwear is offering Doncaster Rovers fans the chance to win two tickets for the upcoming fixture against AFC Wimbledon on Easter Monday. YOUNG BLADES LOSE OUT TO BRISTOL A very young United side fell to a harsh defeat in dramatic fashion against Bristol City on Saturday afternoon. Despite goals from Angelo Capello and Jacob Kelly, the Blades slipped were beaten by the Robins at Shirecliffe. The game started at breakneck speed as United took the lead after just 40 seconds. CAPELLO picked up the ball on the edge of the box and drove low and hard into the far bottom corner. However just a minute later the scores were level as the Blades were caught out down the right hand side and a low cross was turned home at the back post. The Blades had a chance to retake the lead on seven minutes when a free kick from Potts fell
kindly for Kelly, but the winger couldn’t keep his effort down. But on 15 minutes, the third goal of the game did arrive and it went United’s way as Oure played in KELLY who dropped his shoulder twice to beat two defenders and curled into the far corner. Whilst it was longer than the last, this lead didn’t last too long either as a defensive mix-up saw City through, the initial effort was blocked but eventually the ball was forced in with the clock still only on 23 minutes. After the break United would pile on the pressure in an effort to find a winner with substitute Ackroyd being denied multiple times, most notably from a Potts cross into the back post where his header was well saved.
The Blades were denied a third goal in controversial circumstances as Ackroyd went through and slotted in but the referee had pulled play back for a United freekick rather than playing the advantage. Deep into stoppage time, the Blades would be made to rue those aforementioned missed opportunities, in the cruellest of fashion, as City won a game of pinball in the United area to undeservedly snatch all three points.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY UNITEDITES 129 years ago last week (22nd March), a meeting took place on the second floor of 10 Norfolk Row in the centre of the then town of Sheffield, the offices of J.B Wostinholm. Commencing at 7.30pm and, following the record gate receipts for the recent FA Cup Semi Final at Bramall Lane
of in excess of £500, an agreement was passed by the majority of one to form a Football Club to play at the ground from the following season. Then next day, a small advertisement was placed in two local newspapers announcing that the committee of the Sheffield United Cricket Club had
decided to form its own football club and invited professionals to send in their “testimonials and particulars” before 30th March. Taking the name from the cricket club, Sheffield United FC was born. Happy Birthday, Blades.
Blades: S. Kelly, Cantrill (Weaver 65), Boyes, Williams, Belehouan, Neal, J. Kelly, Potts, Oure (Ackroyd 65), Ompreon (Portman 82), Capello. Unused: Foulstone.
UNITED TRIUMPH Sheffield United Walking Football Club have begun 2018 in fine form by winning the Albufeira Cup in Portugal. The 13-team tournament consisting of clubs from across Europe was spread over two days. With the sun shining down, the games were superbly refereed with fully and consistently applied rules, and competition between the players that was determined but with a strong sense of camaraderie and friendship. In the group games, United topped their
section and proceeded into the quarter-finals where they beat Browns WFC 5-2. A close semi-final with Brackley Saints produced a 1-0 win and this then set up a final with the reigning champions Olhanense Strollers. The United players applied all their experience gained from previous successful tournaments and with fine strikes from Andy Norcliffe and Dave Middleton raced into a two goal lead. Olhanense pulled a goal back late in the game but the Blades held out for a deserved 2-1
victory. The team was formed two years ago when Sheffield United Community Foundation began delivery of Walking Football sessions for people aged 45+. It offers people the opportunity to roll back the clock and relive the glory days, but also offers the opportunity for people who have never played football before to come along, socialise and be physically active. BLADES FANS GET FIGHTING FIT
Organisers have spoken of the early success of a new health initiative aimed at football fans which is being offered before Sheffield United home games. Sheffield Hallam University and Sheffield United Football Club, working in partnership with Weston Park Cancer Charity and Sheffield United Community Foundation, are delivering the ‘Fan Fit’ scheme before Blades home games, aimed at increasing cancer awareness and improving the health and wellbeing of fans. Looking after these key measures will help prevent cancer, strokes and heart attacks. Supporting the scheme have been Sheffield United directors, vice presidents and players. The new initiative sees 15-minute health checks offered to Blades fans, with those who sign up for the checks given the option of registering for two tests, including body composition, blood pressure, cholesterol or lung function. The scheme is being delivered by Sheffield Hallam University’s sport and exercise scientists and is designed
to look at current health, lifestyle and fitness. They also include advice on changes which can be made to improve someone’s wellness profile. Dave McCarthy, Sheffield United Operations Director said: “We’re extremely proud to be making a difference to our community through the Community Foundation and are committed to improving the wellbeing of fans. “We’re extremely pleased at the response that Fan Fit has had so far. The health and wellbeing of our fans and their families is paramount to Sheffield United Football Club and Sheffield United Community Foundation and thanks to Weston Park Cancer Charity’s generous support, we hope to increase awareness of cancer, speed of diagnosis and treatment. “By 2020, one in two people will be affected by cancer - that’s more than 16,000 people on a matchday at Bramall Lane. So now, possibly more than ever, is the time for us to keep developing and progressing new ways of raising funds and awareness.
“It’s great to see how popular and wellreceived the health checks have been, having taken place at two home games so far. “The scheme will still be available before the Middlesbrough and Millwall home games so I’d urge fans to get involved if they haven’t already.” The ‘SUFC Fan Fit’ will take place in the Community Hall, which is located on John Street and be available before the following home matches: Middlesbrough Tuesday 10th April, 4.15pm-7.15pm Millwall Saturday 14th April, 9.30am-12.30pm
For more information or to book an appointment email hwb-fanfit@shu. ac.uk with a preferred choice of match fixture/ date. Appointments will be allocated on a first come, first serve basis and a mobile number must be provide so a text reminder can be sent out a few days in advance, although supporters will also receive email confirmation of their appointment.

THOMPSON PRAISE FOR DOGGED OWLS Under-23’s manager Neil Thompson praised his side’s ability to dig in deep and record all three points following their 2-1 triumph over Coventry City at Hillsborough on Monday afternoon.
Wednesday moved back to within a point of the top of the PDL2 North thanks to goals from the returning Fernando Forestieri and Preslav Borukov either side of a Lewis Green leveller for the Sky Blues. Thompson said: “I thought we started great in the first half and could have been out of sight, especially in the first 30-35 minutes but we

didn’t take our chances. “That always means you’re going to give them a little sniff and we gave a free-kick away on the edge of the box and we weren’t alert enough from the corner and they got one so it gives you a bit of a mountain to climb again because we had put so much effort into that first half hour. “In the second half I thought we did well.

WE MAKE IT, YOU TAKE IT, ENJOY IT!!!
We controlled the game apart from the last 20 minutes when we looked a bit leggy. But we’ve had two games in quick succession. As well as claiming another important three points, the contest also offered the chance for Forestieri, making his first appearance since August, and Joost van Aken the chance to step-up their first-team comebacks. Pleased with what he saw from the duo and goalkeeper Cameron Dawson, Thompson added: “Fernando is a terrific player and it’s good to see him back out on the pitch for an hour and he was terrific. “But it’s important he gets minutes under the belt for his confidence moving forward and he got his goal as well. “But not just him, Joost and Cammy got 90 mins and that is what the U23’s games are for.”
FERNANDO LOOKS TO THE FUTURE Fernando Forestieri took another stride towards his return from injury on Monday afternoon. The Owls star played an hour for the Development Squad and scored from the spot in the 2-1 win over Coventry. Having missed almost the entirety of the campaign through a knee injury and the resulting rehabilitation, Forestieri shook off some of that frustration today at Hillsborough. Helping Neil Thompson’s side keep firmly in the PDL2 North title race, Forestieri is looking to the future and said: “I’m really happy to be back to Under-23s, so I work hard to be back soon for the first team. “I feel good, it’s normal I need this type of game to give minutes to my legs and for this I play today. “I feel good, the intensity is a little lower than when you play in
the first team, this is normal. “But I am happy because we played well, we won and I scored also to give me more confidence to play. “But I need to work hard to feel much better.” Wednesday have eight games of the 2017/18 season remaining and the 28-year-old would like nothing more than to help the team to a positive finish in some capacity. “I feel sad because I have missed the whole season but now I want to focus on the present and future here in Sheffield,” he added. “I want to play, it’s been six months, I’m happy to be back, I hope I can play some games and for next season, I’m sure the players will give 200%. “We need to give something to the fans because they deserve something important. “I don’t want to create pressure for us. We need to work hard with each other, have a strong changing room and let’s see what will happen. “I love to see this stadium full, it is a big positive about this club and the fans deserve something. “I want to finish this season well and then see the club do something good next season.”
