Writer and producer Philippa Langley MBE will be delivering this year’s David Hey Memorial Lecture

Cllr Nigel Ball, Cabinet Member for Culture, said: “We are proud of our rich and varied heritage in Doncaster. The annual Doncaster Heritage Festival is a perfect opportunity to celebrate our history, to step back in time and visit the borough in a bygone age
and discover some fascinating stories along the way. “As 2018 marks both 100 years since the end of the First World War and the 100th anniversary of the Representation of the People Act, the Festival also features talks on women’s contribution to the war effort and the local suffrage movement. “We’re looking forward to welcoming some fantastic guest speakers again this
year and exploring local life through the ages through family activities, guided walks, talks, exhibitions, workshops. We’ve also made sure that events are held at various locations and times across the borough to give as many people as possible a chance to come along, get involved and celebrate Doncaster’s history with us.” Some of the many other Heritage Festival highlights

SHEFFIELD CULTURAL GIANTS LINE-UP TO BACK CHANNEL 4 MOVE Sheffield’s cultural giants are lining up in support of a Channel 4 move to the city. Sheffield Doc/Fest, which this week announced some of the highlights of its 2018 programme, and Warp Films have both written letters of support to the council’s City Growth team, which is leading Sheffield’s bid. Elizabeth McIntyre, CEO of Doc/Fest, said: “We are hugely supportive of Sheffield’s bid to become home to one of Channel 4‘s creative hubs.
“As one of the world’s biggest documentary, virtual and augmented reality festivals and marketplaces, based in the heart of England, and now in its 25th year, Channel 4 will be given the warmest of welcomes to the Steel City. “From this move, Sheffield stands to gain a new boost to its profile, to the economy – and to the civic pride of the city. “What Channel 4 stands to gain is a showcase hub in a place where the independent and vibrant
character of the city chimes with C4’s own brand and values. “Channel 4 is a major partner for Doc/Fest, and we look forward to the prospect of being neighbours to boot.” Mark Herbert, CEO of Warp Films added: “We believe Sheffield is the right choice for one of the proposed creative hubs. “This city is unique – a big village full of entrepreneurs and makers with a great spirit and individuality. “The location next to the
train station could not be better – yet the Peak District is just a few minutes away. “This balance between ‘being connected’ and ‘quality of life’ is why, even though we also have a London office, Sheffield is our home and HQ. “If Sheffield was chosen it would be a massive boost to the economy and would lead to further growth in the creative and digital industries, building the skills base, which would allow us as producers to keep more of our work in
the region.” Sheffield has been named as one of the favourites for a Channel 4 regional hub by influential trade title Broadcast. The broadcaster is due to meet with interested cities later this spring. Richard Caborn, Chair of Sheffield’s Channel 4 Bid, said: “I’m delighted to have such a strong support from the city’s cultural sector which gives us such confidence moving forward in our ambitions for Channel 4 to move here. We are also working with the public and private sector to establish a National Screen Institute in the city which could do something remarkable for the creative and digital industries, and would complement any move to the city for Channel 4.”

Sorry.. that was very in appropriate. Did you hear about the Baker who got an electric shock? He stepped on a bun and a currant shot up his leg. What’s blue and not very heavy? Light blue. What do you call a man with a map on his head? Miles. I approached a very beautiful woman in the supermarket and said.. “I’ve lost my wife here, can you talk to me for a couple of minutes?” “Why?” “Because every time I talk to a beautiful woman my wife appears out of nowhere.” A man is recovering in hospital after being struck by falling jigsaw puzzle boxes. Tramlines Festival have a launched a competition to name their second stage at the new location of Hillsborough Park. This is the first time in the history of the festival that the public have been invited to name a stage, all entrants will also be entered into a prize draw to win 4 VIP Upgrades and £100 Bar tab to spend at the festival. To enter, suggestions must be made on the comments section of a video found at www.facebook.com/ Tramlines The highly anticipated 10th edition of Tramlines Festival boasts the biggest, broadest and best lineup of musical talent yet for the new location on Hillsborough Park from Friday 20th – Sunday 22nd July 2018. Household names from the worlds of indie, rock and roll, garage, rap, pop and hip hop will be joined by emerging talent from the local area and across the UK. Headliners, Stereophonics, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds and Craig David’s TS5, are joined by Clean Bandit, Blossoms, De La Soul, Milburn, Jake Bugg, Shed Seven, Everything Everything, Reverend And The Makers, Stefflon Don, The Sherlocks, Mystery Jets, Rat Boy and many more. Tramlines’ new home – licenced for up to 40,000 people – is the massive Hillsborough Park, located a short drive or tram ride from the city centre. The additional space gained from the new site at Hillsborough allows for extra entertainment that makes it as all-encompassing as any traditional, greenfield festival. The new site will include four stages with one hosted by iconic local venue the Leadmill and curated on the Sunday by ‘The Reverend’ Jon McClure, an all new Library Stage offering contemporary live performances from a
variety of emerging talent, and a bigger than ever Into The Trees area with a wealth of kids and family friendly entertainment throughout the day and a plethora of party DJs by evening. Remaining true to its initial vision of being as musically diverse as possible, the 10th Tramlines does so once more by mixing emerging heroes with internationally celebrated acts from a wide range of genres. Friday’s headliners, Stereophonics, with a reputation as one of the best live bands from Great Britain are still riding high off the success of their latest album, Scream Above the Sounds. Current single Taken A Tumble finds the band in fine form and guaranteed to be a highlight of the festival. Saturday is headlined by ex-Oasis man Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, a band who continue to fly the flag for British rock and roll around the world with smart songwriting and huge hooks. Sunday, meanwhile, sees the ever-popular Craig David’s TS5 headline. Akin to a live dubplate clash complete with Craig David on the decks as well as the Master Of Ceremonies with his speed-rapping skills, it’s a performance not to be missed.

There are two distinct slices of energy affecting your situation this week Aries. But it may take some patience and forbearance to garner the good stuff, for there is one mighty astrological clash which will need some care. Stay flexible and give-and-take, and bountifulness can follow. Call for more...
Any attempts to work from home or get more organized may stall. However, this week’s main influence is definitely the Sun’s square with Pluto. One family tie could be strained, or might it be someone you share your home with? Patience will be a virtue Libra. Call for more advice...
Your ruler Venus forges two glorious angles this week, suggesting that this will give you the wherewithal to express yourself in a way which really fits how you feel. Someone you encounter can be the source of great knowledge and wisdom, and can have a profound influence. Call for more...
Your words, thoughts, beliefs and ideas can be important this week, and if you’re clear in what you want to achieve, fantastic progress is possible. But there can also be tensions too. This is perhaps not the best of weeks to expect instant results, and where possible, keep others in the picture. Call for more...
This week’s benefits may not necessarily be instantly obvious, so you will be asked to look beyond how things first appear, and then you can start to appreciate what is shaping up so positively behind this. This can be especially true around your professional career. Call for more astral advice...
There can be an improvement financially now, but this calls on you to show maximum self restraint when it comes to expenditure. However, if your values and those of someone close don’t mesh, and especially romantically, there can be tense scenes as the Sun and Pluto clash. Call for more...
One alliance can just seem to go from strength to strength. Confusion at work can also ease as Mercury goes direct on Sunday. All close relationships are going to need a light touch, so look to avoid giving the impression that you want everything on your own terms. Call for more...
There is so much potential to develop things in a creative and positive way for you, but there’s also the chance for things to go awry. The best way to avoid the latter is by recognizing that at times you and others may feel tender or even fraught this week, and then to make allowances. Call for more...
A situation which has seen you juggling your time and resources can still be tricky to deal with this week. It’s possible that you can feel irked by the expectations of others. However, the planets also suggest that if you can deploy a good deal of diplomacy, there is much to be gained. Call for more...
You may have more impact on situations than you’re giving yourself credit for. There is quite a febrile atmosphere this week, and you could feel a little bit on the back foot. But just absorb what’s being said and be determined to speak out with care Aquarius. Call for more astral advice...
If you’re in a romantic relationship, things will get rather hot and heavy this week. The upside of this could certainly increase the level of spice between you and yours. But there could be a bit of a battle of wills too. Your ruler forges some lovely angles, which can make life more varied. Call for more...
There can be a sense of excitement about your future. However, what you must try to avoid is taking shortcuts. As much as one hope or aspiration may be calling out to you powerfully, there is still the right and the wrong way to approach things. Be as inclusive as possible. Call for more advice...

THE NEW TAX YEAR
The start of April marks the beginning of the new tax year. How will it affect you? Almost all taxpayers will be better off as a result of changes to income tax. The point at which workers start paying tax will rise from £11,500 to £11,850, saving basic-rate taxpayers some £70 a year. The level at which workers start paying higher rate tax (40%) will rise from £45,000 to £46,350, saving them considerably more. Pensions Those with a state pension will see their income rise by 3% from 9th April, due to the government’s triple lock mechanism. The Consumer Prices Index (CPI) rose by 3% in the year to September 2017. Pension Contributions From 6 April, nine million workers who have auto-enrolment pensions will have to pay more in. Their monthly contributions will triple, from a minimum of 1% to a minimum of 3%. Most people will therefore have to pay several hundred pounds a year more. But by doing so, they will also get a 2% contribution from their employer, and more tax relief from the government. According to figures compiled for the BBC, staying in an auto-enrolment scheme could eventually earn you up to £17,000 a year more in retirement.
WHY NOT WALK IN?

A Sheffield care worker that once performed life saving CPR on a resident has been personally thanked by the Lord Mayor of Sheffield for her exemplary 22 years service at Rosebank Nursing Home in S4. Helen Ibottson was full of emotion at the surprise visit by the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Anne Murphy, who dropped in to present her outstanding achievement award in front of the home’s manager Andrew Selwood, staff members and Roy Young, managing director of city-based Silver Healthcare that operate the home. The care worker has become a role model within the organisation for her attention to detail, exemplary care and positive attitude. The Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Anne Murphy, said: “Helen’s patience and tenacity stood out - the staff have said what a privilege it has been to work with her over the years.” The care worker is leaving the industry to set up in business with her sister. Roy Young said: “Helen has held an exemplary record over 22 years with excellent attendance, spotless disciplinary record and numerous Health & Social care accreditations. She won our employee of the year award in 2002 and has been a consistent winner of the employee of the month. The door is always open if she fancies coming back.” Rosebank is one of two specialist dementia homes operated by Silver Healthcare. They also run Fulwood Nursing Home.

SHEFFIELD INSTITUTION BRINGS HACIENDA CLASSICAL SPECTACULAR TO DON VALLEY For the last 38 years, one of Sheffield’s most loved and innovative independent venues has consistently played host to some of the most iconic musicians, artists and shows, and with their recent announcement it seems this tradition is set to continue. The Leadmill brings Hacienda Classical with Manchester Camerata, the city’s experimental orchestra, to Sheffield’s Don Valley Bowl on Friday 17th August – as part of their second wave of dates to be announced for 2018. Hacienda Classical promises a new set and fresh soundtrack for this year. The city’s famous Leadmill venue dominated Sheffield’s dance culture in the 80’s and 90’s with nights like Rise & Steamer as well as being the first home of Gatecrasher in Sheffield. The concert is not the first time that The Leadmill and The Hacienda have collaborated either, as The Leadmill brought a coachload of Sheffield clubbers over to the original FAC51 in Manchester back in 1988. The 7500 capacity Don Valley Bowl is the city’s best arena for live outdoor events and has previously hosted concerts from the likes of U2, Paul Weller and Catfish and The Bottlemen. But the visit of Hacienda Classical is set to be one of the most experimental and nostalgic
shows yet. The show will feature its third new set which is currently being prepared by former DJ’s Graeme Park and Mike Pickering alongside executive producer Peter Hook and musical director Tim Crooks. This version will once again see many new classic tracks added to the repertoire for the Hacienda Classical players and special guests. Samuel Feeley, Promoter at The Leadmill said, “Hacienda Classical has been all over the country and has always gone down a storm so we’re really excited to be able to bring them to Sheffield this summer!” As The Hacienda’s dance heritage has collided with the world of classical music, the concerts have been widely praised with great audience responses from the gigs and dates selling out in minutes. Now coming into its third year, these inspirational nights have
07938 883534
recreated the tunes that defined a generation at the original club, renewed afresh and rearranged with a classical orchestra. The announcement of this show is met with excitement. It is a huge step in the right direction for The Leadmill and will hopefully set the tone for future events. Rebecca Walker, Senior Live Promoter & Assistant General Manager at The Leadmill said, “The Leadmill is such a loved institution to many in the Steel City and I’m immensely proud of both the brand and our hardworking staff to be able to take The Leadmill to the next step with such an ambitious show”.

A concert in aid of the above charity will be held at the Wheatley Working Men’s Club on Saturday, 12 May 2018. I would like to thank all those who have given their time and expertise in organising this event. There have been a number of other events organised by numerous pubs and clubs and I wish to thank them all for their efforts. The Firefly Cancer Awareness Support Group do magnificent work in organising transport to and from treatment centres, and I am profoundly grateful for the (hopefully) life saving treatment their service has made possible for me personally. Also, I would like to say a special thank you to the volunteer drivers of Firefly who give their time so generously. If any other pubs or clubs wish to organise a similar charity event on behalf of the Firefly Cancer Awareness Support Group, please do not hesitate to contact me for any assistance I can give. Firefly can be contacted on 07738390541 C.Bennett Concert Secretary Wheatley Working Men’s Club 01302 360984 38 Wentworth Road Doncaster 01302 324166 or 07985482428

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
COUNTY SENIOR FOOTBALL with Michael Clarke
The beginning of British Summer Time means one thing for the County Senior League, a return for midweek games. This year more than most, due to the bad weather, midweek games are coming thick and fast for the player in the end of season run-in. sadly, the aforementioned bad weather has continued, with a few more games cancelled due to the heavy pre-Easter rain. Premier Division With the league leaders Frecheville not in action this week, the big game of the week came at the Memorial Ground, where second placed AFC Penistone Church Reserves hosted third placed Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves. A double from Luke Townsend was enough to give Stocksbridge a 2-0 victory and take them above Penistone into second, just four points off the lead, with five games in hand. It has been a very busy and productive week for fourth placed North Gawber Colliery. North Gawber saw action twice in midweek. Firstly on Monday they beat Oughtibridge WMFC 3-0 at home, with goals from Lee Elsworth, Liam Marsden and Matthew Thornton. Then just two days later they scored three once again, in a 3-1 win over Wombwell Main. It was an identical week for fifth placed Swinton Athletic also. They were 3-0 winners against Grimethorpe Sports on Wednesday night, and then a brace from Jake Ford helped them to a 3-1 win against Houghton Main on Saturday. It is ten games without victory for second bottom Houghton Main, who also fell 4-0 to Handsworth Parramore Reserves midweek South Kirkby Colliery claimed victories over both Denaby teams this week. On Tuesday, goals from Jordan Harrison and Robert Iverson gave them a 2-0 home win against Denaby United. Then on Saturday they beat Denaby Main 3-1 at the UPVC Trade Centre Ground. Denaby United were again in action on the weekend, where they played-out an entertaining 4-4 draw away at Wombwell Main.
Division One There were no midweek games in Division One, but four games did get the green light on the weekend. League leaders Dodworth Miners Welfare took one more step towards the Division One title, with a 3-2 away win over third placed AFC Dronfield. Dodworth have a 30 point lead at the top, but can still be caught by fifth placed Hepworth United. Hepworth were 3-0 winners this time away at Silkstone United. League leaders Dodworth have 54 points, but Hepworth can potentially reach a total of 55 points. Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves lost 5-2 at home to Dodworth last weekend, but they saw themselves on the right side of 5-2 win this week, as they beat Caribbean Sports to move into a mid-table position. Sheffield Medics gathered a little revenge for the 4-1 home win they suffered to Kiveton Park in September, with a 3-2 win over them a St George’s Park at the weekend. Division Two It has been a big week for Manor Hotel, who moved into third place in Division Two after back-to-back wins. They fought hard for a 4-3 away win against Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Development midweek. Then goals from Ryan Hicks and Branden Hopkins gave them a 2-1 win over Sheffield Bankers Reserves at Norton Playing Fields on Saturday. The Bankers also lost 2-1 at home midweek, as they fell to North Gawber Colliery Reserves, with goals from Bradley Harrison and Shay Senior. Second placed Boynton Sports were made to dig deep, with 10 men, as they drew 1-1 at Forge Valley School against New Bohemians. Goals from Daniel Ravenscroft (2), Lee Evans, Thomas Bird, Joe Sidebottom, Jacob Simon, Aaron Tate and Joel Hickling gave Wombwell Main Development a 8-0 home win over Thurcroft Miners Institute on Monday Night.
I think I’ve been trying too hard recently and as a result, I haven’t been enjoying my fishing as much as I should, so this week, I set out to try and rectify that by having some fun. The weather has played havoc with my fishing too. I know that’s an easy excuse, but I’ve noted a real decline in catch reports sent to me for one of the UK’s biggest carp publications, so I know it’s not just me who is struggling; it appears that the whole of the North of England has become a carpy wasteland! I know some are still catching, but overall, the last few weeks have been dire… it was time to enjoy life again! I travelled to one of my favourite local venues, Gawsworth Fisheries near Macclesfield in Cheshire, to try Park Pool, a picturesque lake of a couple of acres, with plenty of variety to go at. Luckily, it’s close to the car park too as my arthritis has been playing up, so after trudging a few yards in the rain to my peg, the first thing up was the umbrella! My wife treated me to a new centrepin reel last week, and I was keen to give it its first outing. Freshly spooled with 4lb line, it was quickly fitted to a float rod and the line passed through the rings. I sat back under the brolly and considered my float selection, before choosing a slim dart with an ultra fine tip; ideal for close range work in about four feet of water. I chose rod and line for a couple of reasons. One, I don’t own a pole, and to be honest, the thought of constantly shipping in and out fills with me with dread… I wanted to relax, not work hard, and besides, I get awful back ache when using them. Two, I was eager to use my new reel, so it was a perfect excuse! Locked in place with a couple of BB shot, the dart was plumbed to dead depth, and a number of smaller shot strung down the line to finish with a no.8 a couple of inches from the size 16 hook. A pair of scarlet gentles were impaled, and I pulled line off my shiny new reel, and swung the float out to my chosen spot… bliss! A small ball of Spotted Fin Dark Superblend was splashed on top of the float, and I waited for the float to slide away… The Dark Superblend is a fairly new groundbait, with high attraction, and low food value, but more importantly, it stays dark on the lake bed and doesn’t appear to ‘wash out’. The water is still cold and fairly clear, so I didn’t want fish to spook off a bright patch of bait. The float settled to the black line below the orange tip, then quivered, lifted, settled again, then lifted once more before sliding into the depths. The first fish of the day was a small silver bream, a ‘blade’, which was barely hooked… The wind started to ripple the water, and the bites became harder to spot. I missed plenty, with skimmers taking the bait on the way down, and holding it just above the bottom so the float wouldn’t sit properly. Positive bites were few and far between, so I decided to change to a slightly heavier float, with most of the weight by the hook. This would hopefully put the bream off taking on the drop, and the rig would become more or less a ‘lift method’, rising in the water whenever the bait was moved. A single BB shot three inches from the hook was the only split shot on the line, and instantly, the bites became almost unmissable! With maggots on the hook, the number of bites started to slow, so I changed to bread punch. I love fishing with bread punch and consider it one of the
ORCHARD PARK
most effective cold water baits, especially if things are tough. The skimmers loved it too, and the fish came thick and fast for the rest of the session. I don’t think I caught anything over a pound, but the constant action kept me busy all day. I’d had permission from the lake owner to use a keepnet for an hour or so, just to be able to photograph some fish (keepnets are not allowed normally) and after I’d placed the fish into my landing net, it became apparent that they were feeding hard. I tried corn on the hook too, which saw slightly bigger fish, but not at the same rate, so a switch back to tiny pellets of Warburtons kept the action steady! I’d been balling in a walnut size lump of groundbait every fifteen minutes and had introduced little else aside from discarded hook baits throughout the day, but the fish kept coming. Initially, I’d hoped for an early season tench, but every single fish that I caught was a skimmer! Dozens of them! Finally, the float lifted, and slipped away in a classic ‘tenchy’ way, and that was what broke the surface and slid into the net. It wasn’t a big fish at just over a pound, and battle scarred too (damn cormorants) but it was green and slippy, so it counted! I put it back gently, then swung the float out and watched as it instantly disappeared. I struck and met a solid lump of resistance, which shot off and instantly snapped my 3lb hook link before I had chance to do anything about it. A couple more ‘blades’ took my punched bread, then once again, I got snapped by a carp. It was obvious that bigger fish were now in the swim, and with carp to around 20lb in the lake, I didn’t have much chance to getting them on the bank… I just hadn’t bought that kind of tackle with me, and it was getting too late to go back to the van for stronger kit. Rather than risk damaging any fish, it was time to go home, so waiting for a gap in the rain, I packed up quickly. I’d had a fun day. Admittedly, I would have been happy to see some variety, but by changing things to improve bite indication, baiting carefully, and keeping my concentration, I think I’d managed around 45-50lb of skimmers which I considered a good haul in the cold, especially as two other anglers on the same lake caught nothing. The duo had moved on from another lake on site after blanking there too, so I was doubly pleased with my haul. The best thing about the day was getting back to what fishing is all about, enjoyment. Not catching monsters for sponsors, not thinking about a magazine article, or taking stock photos for later, just having fun, with a rod, a reel, a float, and a loaf of bread… perfect!

WE WERE SECOND BEST - WARNE Millers Manager Paul Warne reflected on his side’s 3-1 defeat at Charlton Athletic this afternoon. Despite an impressive start to the match, the Millers couldn’t break the deadlock and faced an uphill task when the Addicks raced into a three-goal lead. “I thought we started the game really well,” said Warne. “We were comfortable on the ball. We looked pretty fresh and I was pretty pleased with how we started. Will’s had a couple of chances, hit the bar and had another chance he possibly should have done better

ROWE IMPRESSED WITH SQUAD QUALITY Tommy Rowe believes Rovers have enough quality within their ranks to finish as high as possible as they head into the final stages of their first season back in Sky Bet League One. “I’ve spoken about it before, the potential that this team has will hopefully be shown in the next four or five games, we’re looking for a strong finish that can set us up for next year,” he said. “There are some good players on the bench and there are others that are coming back from injury and we all want to help each other kick o towards the end of the season, hopefully we maintain that culture
and we can only improve. “It’s been a tough couple of months for us, we’ve had players out with injuries and so it’s not been easy for us to be at our best, we want to push on towards the end of the season and kick on from there.” Rowe himself has missed just one league game this season, and he feels his versatility and desire to do well for the team has helped him to become a mainstay in the side. “I’ve played in a lot of different positions this season and that can only be a help to us, you like to build up momentum in a certain position, you see it with James
Coppinger and how he’s thrived this season,” he added. “I’m happy to play wherever, it can only help if everyone is a team player, it’s not just about myself and that’s what I said when I came here, the older I get, the more mature I can be with playing in different positions. “I’ve played a lot of games this season and the gaffer has shown a lot of faith in me to continue in these important games, I’ve played where I’ve maybe not been at full strength but that’s the commitment that all of the players here show.”

GAFFER LEFT FRUSTRATED BY LATE GOAL Chris Wilder was visibly frustrated following United’s stalemate with Cardiff City on Easter Monday. Anthony Pilkington broke United hearts in stoppagetime after Leon Clarke’s goal looked to have secured three valuable and deserved points for the Blades. The Gaffer remarked: “We didn’t get what we deserved, we played well and
should have won against a team looking to get out of the division. “We’ve not been clinical enough in the final third, everything else is quite good, we’re playing front foot football and creating chances.” Wilder added: “We opened up a side with a good defensive record time and time again, only to get caught with the sucker punch right at the death.
“Look at the reaction from everyone associated with the opposition at the end, I understand it meant a lot, we enjoyed plenty of late goals in a promotion winning side last season. “It’s just difficult to accept that we’ve played so well against a side like Cardiff and for us to leave the pitch without the win the performance deserved.”
STOPPING TIME STRIKE DENIES BLADES A stoppage-time goal cruelly denied the Blades a place in the top six of the Sky Bet Championship, despite dominating against second placed Cardiff City. Leon Clarke put United in the ascendency and Chris Wilder’s side more than deserved to win the game, only for Anthony Pilkington to snatch a last-gasp leveller against the run of play. Welsh international midfielders Evans and Brooks were handed starts, whilst Moore replaced the suspended Blackman in goal. Leonard and Sharp dropped to the bench, with Clarke taking over the captain’s armband. At a soggy Lane, United almost struck first in fortuitous circumstances, when Bennett’s headed hit Grujic and almost wrong-footed Etheridge. United continued to press forward and following a quick break involving Baldock, Clark and Brooks, Evans fired over from a promising position. In response, Grujic fired an effort goalwards, it was deflected by Zohore, but he adjudged to be in an offside position. In the 28th minute, the Blades did deservedly go ahead. Evans and
Lundstram exchanged passes on the edge of the penalty area, before the latter fed CLARKE and he effort deflected off his marker and beat a tumbling Etheridge. Bennett then saw yellow for a cynical foul on Basham, as he attempted to launch a counter attack. The home faithful were in full voice and were almost rewarded with a second. Clarke played Stevens behind Mendez-Laing and his cross was inches away from Brooks and then Baldock. With half-time approaching, Stearman rose highest at the back post from a corner, but his header was cleared off the line by Bennett. One minute of added time was signalled and the Blades continued to push forward, with Lundstram firing wide of the target after being teed up by goalscorer Clarke. Before the restart, Madine replaced Mendez-Laing. Like much of the first period, the second began at a frantic pass and only a last-ditch tackle from Etheridge denied Evans, after the Welsh international had been played through by Fleck. At the other end, City threatened themselves. In the second phase,
Gunnarsson broke clear down the right and fizzed an effort inches wide of the target. City were now more of attacking threat, with Moore at his best to deny Zohore at his near post. From the resulting corner though, United broke and Lundstram fired over from the edge of the area, after Baldock found himself United’s most advanced player. With 21 minutes remaining, United were forced into a change, with Wright replacing the injured Stearman. Back to the action, Fleck overlapped down the left and stung the palms of Etheridge. A second change followed, with Brooks being replaced by Donaldson. The Blades came oh so close to a second as they caught Cardiff cold from a set-piece. Fleck freed Stevens with Manga and Morrison not facing play and Donaldson slid in at the near post, only to see the woodwork deny him with Etheridge beaten. A flurry of corners went the Blades way, before appeals from the Kop for a penalty were waved away as Bamba appeared to foul Evans. Again, from a Stevens cross, only a crucial block from Etheridge denied the Blades, with

JOS PLEASED WITH WEARSIDE WIN Owls manager Jos Luhukay was pleased to seal a third successive victory for the Owls against Sunderland on
Easter Monday at the Stadium of Light. Goals from Lucas Joao, Tom Lees and Atdhe Nuhiu secured all three points for Wednesday, with George Honeyman’s effort not enough to aid the Black Cats’ relegation fight. Luhukay said: “I am very happy with the performance today. “Our strikers are in good

though, Sam Hutchinson, Morgan Fox and Gary Hooper will be out for the rest of the season. “It’s not good news for us, but we have had to deal with a lot of injuries this season, and we will continue to fight in every game.” The Owls next face Fulham at Hillsborough on Saturday and the Dutchman wants his side to continue their strong form. He added: “We have said that we need to finish the season as best as we can. “We are in a good way, and we need to keep fighting if we want to finish the season in a positive way. “We have some hard games coming up but some good momentum.”
ATDHE THANKS OWLS FANS Owls striker Adthe Nuhiu has thanked supporters for voting him Wednesday’s Player on the Month for March. The Kosovan international won the award after receiving a huge 85% of the vote following a string of top performances for the Owls. He said: “Thank you to every single person that has voted for me. “I have been here a long time now and I think the supporters know what this club means to me. “I am not just a person who comes here and plays football, I think they can see what I feel for this club and that’s why I have to thank them for voting me. “It means a lot to me, I have tried to come back after a long time not playing, and it’s good
to know that people still believe in me.” Wednesday have now won three games on the bounce after victories against Leeds, Preston and Sunderland, and Nuhiu says the dressing room spirit has always been and remains strong. He added: “The team spirit was never away, I’ve been here five years and I’ve been through difficult spells and good spells, but the spirit is always there. “We have had worse periods this season but we are picking up again as a team and its enjoyable to play. “The manager came and gave me new confidence. Every manager has his own ideas, and probably he likes the way I play and work for the team so I will keep being this way. “I haven’t changed since the beginning to now, I have played always the same, every manager sees you different and at the moment this has turned out well. “I just try to do my best every game.”
