GET READY DONCASTER TIME OUT PAGE 4

A new campaign has launched by Doncaster Council encouraging Doncaster to get ready for this year’s Tour de Yorkshire. It’s just over a month before the best men’s and women’s cyclists in the world race into Doncaster on Thursday 3 May as part of the 2018 Tour de Yorkshire. What’s more, the second stage also passes through the borough on Friday 4 May too. Excitement is already starting to build in the villages and towns

along the route and there is a FREE fan zone on Doncaster Town Field, next to the finish line on Bennetthorpe, which will offer something for the whole family to do. To make the Tour de Yorkshire a day which lives long in the memory, a Get Ready Doncaster campaign has been launched calling on local communities to get into the party spirit and turn out on the day. The world class cycle races are simply the perfect reason for

a carnival of fun. Ros Jones, Mayor of Doncaster, said: “To get Doncaster ready for the Tour de Yorkshire in May, we have launched a campaign telling people the race is coming and encouraging them to do their bit to help make it a fantastic day. We will have lots lined up at the Fanzone at finish on the Thursday and we want communities to organise parties and line the route on both days. It’s going to be a great spectacle.”

REGIONAL EDITION

Cllr Nigel Ball, Cabinet Member for Public Health, Leisure and Culture, said: “We want local residents and businesses to get into the Tour de Yorkshire spirit by organising events and decorating their buildings, land and vehicles in the familiar yellow and blue Tour de Yorkshire colours. In fact, we want to turn Doncaster yellow and blue and show the millions of people watching the race on television across the world and the

thousands of visitors who will come to see the action just why Doncaster is such a wonderful place. “To coincide with this Get Ready Doncaster campaign, we have some exciting competitions for people who join in the fun. This includes a money can’t buy prize for two people to follow the race in the official Tour de Yorkshire race car.” Further information on the competitions and the plans for races is available at www. doncaster.gov.uk/TDY

JUST TWO WEEKS LEFT TO SECURE RIGHT TO VOTE People across Sheffield are being reminded that the deadline to register for the forthcoming Local Election and the first-ever Sheffield City Region Mayoral Election is just two weeks away, by 11.59pm on Tuesday 17 April. If you live in Sheffield it is your democratic right to vote for your local councillor and for Sheffield City Region’s first-elected mayor on Thursday 3 May 2018. Those who are not

registered will not be able to vote in either election. If you’re not registered or are unsure about your registration, you need to check and apply by 17 April. You only need to register once – you don’t need to register separately for each election. However, you must register again if you’ve changed address, name or nationality. Sheffield City Council is advising people not to leave registering to the last minute. If you are

registered to vote, your polling card should have arrived last week. If it hasn’t, you may need to register to vote. Your polling card will have been sent to the address where you are registered – if you’ve moved you need to make sure your electoral roll details are up-to-date. And if you’re going to be away on polling day, Thursday 3 May, make sure you’ve applied for a postal vote before Wednesday 18 April.

/THEMERCURYNEWSPAPER

If you can’t vote in person you can apply for a proxy vote, which means someone else can vote on your behalf, this can be applied for until Wednesday 25 April. Chief returning officer John Mothersole said: “This year, for the first time, Sheffield’s residents can not only vote for their local councillor, but also for our region’s first mayor. “I would appeal to people across the city to make sure they have received

their polling card, or have taken the necessary steps to ensure they can vote on 3 May, whether that’s checking if they’re registered, applying for a postal vote or arranging a proxy vote. “Registering to vote is quick and easy. People just need their National Insurance number, date of birth and address to hand. “This election day people have the opportunity to make their vote count locally and regionally. Don’t waste that right, register and have a say”. To find out more about the Sheffield local election, different ways to vote and registering visit www.sheffield.gov. uk/elections2018

ARCTIC MONKEYS ANNOUNCE HUGE HOMECOMING DOUBLE HEADER AT THE FLYDSA ARENA

Following news of their forthcoming album ‘Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino’, which will be released on Friday the 11th of May, Arctic Monkeys this week announced a number of arena shows in September including TWO hometown gigs at Sheffield’s FlyDSA Arena on Tuesday 18th & Wednesday 19th September. One of the city’s biggest ever musical exports return home after a 5 year hiatus, last

performing at the Arena back in 2013. Rumours were rife this winter that they were planning huge shows in Hillsborough Park for this summer after license applications from SJM concerts appeared on lamp posts around the S6 area, but sadly these rumours never materialised as the applications were withdrawn a few weeks later. For a while it seemed like the city the band have always declared their love for had been left off the 2018 world tour, but this weeks announcement heralded a huge double header at the Arena where the region’s music lovers will be able to see their heroes return to their own backyard. ‘Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino’ is available to order now via the AM Store. The Lemon Twigs will be special guests on the September dates. Tickets go on general sale at 9am on Friday 13th April via the ticket hotline on 0114 256 5656, online at www.flydsaarena.co.uk or in person at the Arena Box Office.

BIGGEST CROWDS YET FOR THE OUTDOOR CITY WEEKENDER More people than ever turned out to watch the annual Outdoor City Weekender, an actionpacked 3-day festival that celebrates Sheffield’s impressive outdoor offer. Now in its third year, the Weekender – which this year took place on 9-11 March – boasts four headline events, and a host of fringe activities that appeal to all ages and abilities. More than 1,000 people lined seven of Sheffield’s steepest hills to cheer on the cyclists of The Magnificent Seven cycle challenge, and crowds at the inner-city mountain bike race, the Howard Street Dual, were double those of last year. Di Buckley, head of economic strategy at Sheffield City Council, said: “These figures prove that there’s a real appetite for these kinds of events in Sheffield, and that this is the place to come for people seeking outdoor adventure, city culture and rural escapes. “We’re delighted to see that with each passing year more and more people are turning up to see what it’s all about, and that the event is clearly fulfilling its ambition to grow awareness of Sheffield as The Outdoor City. This helps to grow our economy as people take advantage of Sheffield’s unique lifestyle offer. “We hope people were inspired by what they saw at the Weekender and are encouraged to try something new, whatever their ability. Whether that’s a high octane sport like mountain biking, a gentle stroll in the local park, or something in between.” It wasn’t just those watching the events in person who enjoyed everything the Weekender had to offer, as live streaming brought the action to a much wider online audience. The Howard Street Dual has had more than 12,500 views on YouTube, and the Climbing Works International Festival (CWIF) final

The North’s largest entertainment weekly, telephone our sales team to get your advert on these pages 0114 276 3633 opt.1

has received over 45,000 views, with that figure continuing to rise. More women also took part in the Weekender this year. The Howard Street Dual, which took place in the city centre on Saturday 10 March, saw 17 female riders take to the city centre dual slalom track, in comparison to just eight last year. It was local rider Carrie Poole who once again topped the podium and, in the men’s category, last year’s winner Brett Penfold narrowly missed out to local legend Steve Peat in the nail-biting final, with a stewards’ enquiry needed to confirm the result. Jon Dallow, who runs the event along with Nick Hamilton of the This is Sheffield bike blog, said: “A stellar field of athletes and pro riders rocked up to the Howard Street Dual, drawn by the magnet effect of Steve Peat. “Not only did it bring this great sport out of the woods for everyone to enjoy, but it also built on Sheffield’s reputation of hosting ‘the biggest littlest race in the world’, the annual Steel City Downhill in Grenoside Woods, which returns on 5 May.” In The Magnificent Seven cycling challenge on the Sunday, 107 riders (24 more than last year) – made up of 14 women, 55 men and 38 veterans – took on the 26-mile route, which included seven of Sheffield’s toughest hill climbs. Competitors came from all over the country to take part but it was three riders from Sheffield who took the top prizes; Kieran Savage, Rebecca Goodson and James Allen. Event organiser and secretary to Sheffield’s largest cycle club, SheffRec CC, Marc Etches, said: “This year’s Magnificent Seven was the best yet with the largest number of riders and some very good racing in all categories. “Entries sold out very fast and riders really want to be part of the event. “The racing was strong from the start and the senior men’s category was especially fierce with a great battle between the Cycling Sheffield pairing of Kieran Savage and Joe Clark and 2017 winner Andy Nichols riding for B38 Underpin Racing.

“I was pleased to see Sheffield rider Rebecca Goodson win the women’s category and especially proud to see my friend and team mate James Allen win every climb to claim the vets category. “The crowds were again amazing and the residents came out in force to support the race, which was great to see. “The finish at the Côte de Bradfield was very special as all the riders got to see The Outdoor City from the summit. It was the perfect finish to a unique event only available in Sheffield.” At the 13th Sheffield Adventure Film Festival (ShAFF), many of this year’s strongest films featured women and almost one third of the 112 films had female leads, or were made by women – more than ever before. ShAFF organiser Matt Heason said: “We had another brilliant festival this year. This is certainly thanks in part to our collaboration with The Outdoor City Weekender, which helps us plan a full visitor experience. “Ticket sales were great, we ran four ‘Best of ShAFF’ events which were all virtually sold out, and The Outpost at the Workstation and mobile cinema truck at the train station were once again big hits.” The Outdoor City Weekender launched the city’s calendar of outdoor adventure for 2018. To see what else there is to look forward to in Sheffield this year, please visit www.theoutdoorcity.co.uk/the-outdoorcity-in-2018.

There are two distinct slices of energy affecting your situation this week Aries. But it may take some patience and forbearance to garner the good stuff, for there is one mighty astrological clash which will need some care. Stay flexible and give-and-take, and bountifulness can follow. Call for more...

Any attempts to work from home or get more organized may stall. However, this week’s main influence is definitely the Sun’s square with Pluto. One family tie could be strained, or might it be someone you share your home with? Patience will be a virtue Libra. Call for more advice...

Your ruler Venus forges two glorious angles this week, suggesting that this will give you the wherewithal to express yourself in a way which really fits how you feel. Someone you encounter can be the source of great knowledge and wisdom, and can have a profound influence. Call for more...

Your words, thoughts, beliefs and ideas can be important this week, and if you’re clear in what you want to achieve, fantastic progress is possible. But there can also be tensions too. This is perhaps not the best of weeks to expect instant results, and where possible, keep others in the picture. Call for more...

This week’s benefits may not necessarily be instantly obvious, so you will be asked to look beyond how things first appear, and then you can start to appreciate what is shaping up so positively behind this. This can be especially true around your professional career. Call for more astral advice...

There can be an improvement financially now, but this calls on you to show maximum self restraint when it comes to expenditure. However, if your values and those of someone close don’t mesh, and especially romantically, there can be tense scenes as the Sun and Pluto clash. Call for more...

One alliance can just seem to go from strength to strength. Confusion at work can also ease as Mercury goes direct on Sunday. All close relationships are going to need a light touch, so look to avoid giving the impression that you want everything on your own terms. Call for more...

There is so much potential to develop things in a creative and positive way for you, but there’s also the chance for things to go awry. The best way to avoid the latter is by recognizing that at times you and others may feel tender or even fraught this week, and then to make allowances. Call for more...

A situation which has seen you juggling your time and resources can still be tricky to deal with this week. It’s possible that you can feel irked by the expectations of others. However, the planets also suggest that if you can deploy a good deal of diplomacy, there is much to be gained. Call for more...

You may have more impact on situations than you’re giving yourself credit for. There is quite a febrile atmosphere this week, and you could feel a little bit on the back foot. But just absorb what’s being said and be determined to speak out with care Aquarius. Call for more astral advice...

If you’re in a romantic relationship, things will get rather hot and heavy this week. The upside of this could certainly increase the level of spice between you and yours. But there could be a bit of a battle of wills too. Your ruler forges some lovely angles, which can make life more varied. Call for more...

There can be a sense of excitement about your future. However, what you must try to avoid is taking shortcuts. As much as one hope or aspiration may be calling out to you powerfully, there is still the right and the wrong way to approach things. Be as inclusive as possible. Call for more advice...

LIVE REVIEW GARY NUMAN THE FOUNDRY, SHEFFIELD Gary Numan celebrated his 60th birthday earlier this month, yet he has the irrepressible energy and aesthetic appeal of a much younger idol. His career spans over 40 years enabling him to perfect his art and this live performance is a paragon of hard-hitting apocalyptic sound. This tour showcases songs from his latest release 'Savage' which alludes to the ruination of the Earth at the hands of human evil and greed. Gary and the band are wearing futuristic sack-cloth clothing to reflect a cathartic essence of 'Savage'. The set opens with 'Ghost Nation' and with lyrics 'where death and dust are neighbours'. The delayed and solid drumming are particularly impressive. Older anthems follow from 'Replicas' and 'Jagged' eras to apparent popular demand and all are singing along, but it is a track entitled 'The Fall' (from 'Dead Son Rising') that injects even more vitality into a very excited throng. Next up is 'Bed of Thorns', a haunting and most chilling masterpiece that encapsulates a more seductive auditory affinity. The soothing elements of this song reach far into the furthermost expanses of the senses. Delectable! 'Pray for the pain you serve' sees the band cavorting on stage, horizontally kicking out in synchronised power chord movements. These

alacritous postures effectively add dimension to the substance of the track, delighting their audience. The pulsating synthesizers and distorted guitar riff of 'Haunted' are enthralling, making this track a personal favourite of many fans, yet it remains an unfound gem in the wider music scene to the bewilderment of many followers. Perfectly placed after 'Haunted' is 'Mercy'. Another offering from 'Savage'. Layers of atmosphere are built into this track and it again provides an enchanting anthem delicious to the ears! Later, we are treated to 'My Name is Ruin', the first release from 'Savage' and arguably one of his best ever single edit releases. The official version features Eastern style singing from his very talented 12 year old daughter, Persia. One to watch for the future! Gary is using a sample of Persia's vocals tonight as this is a song that cannot go unplayed! The

cadence of Numan's voice cuts through heavy guitars and full on synthesizers with admirable bite. This is particularly perceptible on 'When the world comes apart'. Where intervals allow, his loyal army of fans chant the now familiar 'Numan, Numan, Numan' as they reach out to salute their hero. The smile on Gary's face cannot conceal his appreciation. The final encore song is 'My Last Day' and is taken from his previous release 'Splinter'. Immaculately beautiful and with a pristine crescendo this track is the ideal finale to a most enjoyable evening. Yet another amazing live show from Gary Numan. You would be hard pushed to find a better live performer. He is certainly not what the music media would have you believe.

LOCAL ELECTIONS 2018 HEALTHWATCH On Thursday 3 May 2018 there will be elections to elect councillors for Sheffield City Council. At the same time Sheffield City Region will elect a mayor for the first time. If you are registered to vote in local elections for any of the district councils of Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham or Sheffield, you will be eligible to vote in this election. The last day to register to vote for the upcoming local elections is Tuesday 17 April. The elections are taking place Thursday 3 May. You can register online or by post. www.gov.uk/register-to-vote You can vote in person, by post or by proxy. For more information, visit www.sheffield.gov.uk/elections The Mayoral Elections If you are registered to vote in local elections for any of the district councils of Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham or Sheffield, you will be eligible to vote in this election. In 2014 the Sheffield City Region Combined Authority was

established. Led by the nine council leaders, this brought together the four ‘constituent’ South Yorkshire authorities with Bassetlaw, Bolsover, Chesterfield, Derbyshire Dales and North East Derbyshire as ‘non-constituent’ members. The Mayor will work with these leaders to deliver the area’s economic development, regeneration and transport priorities to drive the growth of the economy. What will the Mayor do? The Mayor will be a major figure in the political life of the area. They will act as an ambassador for the area; promoting it as a place to live, work, visit and invest in. The Mayor will be a member, and chair, of the Sheffield City Region Combined Authority. The Mayor will have certain public transport powers relating to how buses may operate in the future. The Mayor and the other leaders of the Sheffield City Region Combined Authority will be able to work with the Local Enterprise Partnership, central government and other organisations in pursuing shared goals.

Healthwatch Sheffield believes health and social care works best when people are involved in decisions about their treatment. They help to make sure that those designing, running, and regulating services listen to people’s views and act on them. GOING ABROAD? PRESCRIPTIONS POLICE ALERTS

If you are planning to go abroad for your holidays this year, there are some changes you should be aware of: Passports The Home Office is for the first time making it more expensive to apply by post rather than online, as postal applications cost more to process. The price changes came into force on 27 March and apply to renewals and new passports (which includes if you’ve lost your old passport or changed your name). Online applications will cost £75.50 for adults and £49 for children, while postal applications will be £85 for adults and £58.50 for children. For further information see the government website. www.gov.uk/renew-adult-passport Check if your free EHIC card’s valid EHIC’s give you access to EU state-run hospitals and GPs like a local resident. Over three million cards expired last year and weren’t renewed. So check yours is valid. Never pay to get or renew, as EHIC’s are free. The EHIC is an agreement between countries in the EU and European Economic Area. The vote for Brexit may affect this in future, but nothing’s likely to happen until at least March 2019.

The NHS prescription charge in England has increased by 20p to £8.80 – but hundreds of thousands of patients could save an average of almost £50 a year by getting a ‘prescription season ticket’. The Government has announced that the price of a prescription increase but the cost of a prescription prepayment certificate – essentially a ‘season ticket’ which covers the cost of all prescriptions for a certain period – will be frozen, at £29.10 for three months or £104 for a year. Single charge: £8.80 3 month PPC (no change): £29.10 12 month PPC (no change): £104.00 If you have more than one prescription a month it is cheaper to have a prepaid certificate

BEER MAT CAMPAIGN

Nearly one million beer mats have been distributed by the Electoral Commission to pubs and bars across England encouraging people to register to vote before the deadline in just one week. The Commission’s new “Got 5?” campaign is encouraging anyone who isn’t registered to go online at gov.uk/ register-to-vote whilst they wait in the pub for their mates, or wait for the bus and register before the deadline at midnight on 17 April. With a third of voters under the Sheffield Arts charity, Ignite age of 34 not registered, the beer mats at Imaginations and the University of more than 900 venues in areas with local Sheffield’s Department of Psychology, are elections, urge people to register ahead of looking for volunteers (aged 50+) to take elections on 3 May 2018. Emma Hartley, part in a research study on audiobooks Head of Campaigns said: “In May 151 and well-being. The study will involve local authorities in England, including all volunteers listening to an audiobook London boroughs, are holding elections for over a month and reporting on their so it’s vital people register before the wellbeing. Volunteers are asked to deadline next week. We’re keen to see attend a short session in the city centre. people using the time that may otherwise Volunteers will be given a £10 Love2Shop be wasted, like waiting for friends at the voucher and an invite to a celebration pub, to go online and complete a form in event. JURASSIC KINGDOM IS SET TO ROAR INTO SHEFFIELD THIS MAY Norfolk Heritage Park is set to be transformed into a Jurassic Kingdom this May, when the interactive, animatronic dinosaur exhibition comes to the city for two weeks. The exhibition, which will see 30 life-size dinosaurs on show, will run from Saturday 26 May – Sunday 10 June and Tickets are now on sale at jurassickingdom.uk Norfolk Heritage Park is set to be taken over by prehistoric predators next month, when the UK’s only outdoor ‘dino-tour’, Jurassic Kingdom, roars into the city. More than 30 lifelike animatronic dinosaurs

– including an 18m high, roaring T-Rex and a 16m long Diplodocus – will be on show, snarling their jaws and swaying their tails for audiences of all ages at the familyfriendly event, which runs from Saturday 26 May to Sunday 10 June. Naz Kabir, event director at Weli Creative – the organisation behind Jurassic Kingdom, said: “We can’t wait to bring Jurassic Kingdom to Sheffield for the first time this May. “The awe-inspiring dinosaurs give kids and adults alike the chance to experience the sheer size and scale of these

fascinating creatures close-up, embarking on a prehistoric adventure that’s both exciting and educational.” Visitors will encounter the dinosaurs as they explore the Jurassic Kingdom through Norfolk Heritage Park, discovering epic, life-sized dinosaur replicas from the Jurassic, Triassic and Cretaceous periods as they go, from T-Rex and Triceratops to flying reptiles like Pterosaurs. Younger dinosaur hunters will also be able to try their hand at digging for bones in an excavation area before learning about how dinosaurs

lived, in the Jurassic Kingdom educational marquee. Naz added: “As well as experiencing the thrill of being in the midst of these impressive and incredibly lifelike creatures, visitors can also learn about how dinosaurs lived, millions of years ago. “It’s a unique chance for families and school visitors to enjoy an entertaining and educational day out, and get some truly unforgettable photos along the way, too. Tickets are now on sale from our website – so don’t miss out!” Richard Eyre, Head of City Centre Management, Markets and Major

CROONERS This modern world does not always seem the place for men of style and vigour. Men with a penchant for sentiment, romance and charm. Men who own tap shoes. This rip roaring comedy musical has been wowing audiences with its witty and exhilarating show full of satirical energy, hilarious one liners, laugh out loud silliness and superb musical numbers. Featuring the outstanding and uncompromising live, on stage musicianship of the 9-piece band ‘The Mini Big Band’, these Crooners feature songs from Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr, Matt Monro, Nat King Cole and Bobby Darin. Expect some Lady is a Tramp, Come Fly With Me, L.O.V.E, When You’re Smiling, Fly Me To The Moon, Beyond The Sea, Mac The Knife any many more…

Events said: “It is quite fitting that one of our oldest parks will be hosting this wonderful event. The

park was chosen by the organisers because they saw the layout and the greenery and decided it looked like the natural habitat of dinosaurs. I am sure everyone who comes to this exhibition will agree. “We expect this unique event will be very popular and draw

visitors to the area from near and far. It will be quite surreal to see life size dinosaurs in Norfolk Heritage Park this summer!” A variety of food and drink will be available on site, as well as the opportunity for visitors to take home a memento of the day from the Official

Merchandise unit. Jurassic Kingdom opens to the public on Saturday 26 May and is open daily from 10am – 6pm until Sunday 10 June, apart from 4, 5 and 6 June. Last entry is at 5pm. Tickets are available from www. jurassickingdom.uk.

A concert in aid of the above charity will be held at the Wheatley Working Men’s Club on Saturday, 12 May 2018. I would like to thank all those who have given their time and expertise in organising this event. There have been a number of other events organised by numerous pubs and clubs and I wish to thank them all for their efforts. The Firefly Cancer Awareness Support Group do magnificent work in organising transport to and from treatment centres, and I am profoundly grateful for the (hopefully) life saving treatment their service has made possible for me personally. Also, I would like to say a special thank you to the volunteer drivers of Firefly who give their time so generously. If any other pubs or clubs wish to organise a similar charity event on behalf of the Firefly Cancer Awareness Support Group, please do not hesitate to contact me for any assistance I can give. Firefly can be contacted on 07738390541 C.Bennett Concert Secretary Wheatley Working Men’s Club 01302 360984 38 Wentworth Road Doncaster 01302 324166 or 07985482428

MOTORISTS WELCOME 12% DROP IN INSURANCE PREMIUM COSTS

Car insurance premiums have dropped by an average £70 per person for the first quarter of the year. The 12% decrease will be welcomed by motorists after premiums have continued to rise over the last three years. The average premium now comes in at £504, having previously been hiked up from £421 in 2015 to £574 by the end of 2017. The data – compiled by Moneysupermarket.com – analysed around 1.7 million quote requests from January to March this year. The fall is due to recent changes in governmental policy surrounding fraudulent claims and personal injury pay-outs. Kevin Pratt, consumer affairs expert at Moneysupermarket.com, said: “For once, it’s good

MOTOR MATES Motor Vehicle Servicing & Repairs All other makes welcome Air-Con Service Checks

news for hard-pressed motorists after months of price increases. “Last year, premiums rocketed because of changes to the way personal injury compensation payments are calculated – insurers increased prices to help fund larger pay-outs to victims of accidents. “Thanks to a government U-turn, the impact of the change on compensation awards will be reduced at some point this year, allowing insurers to ease premium hikes. “Additionally, the government is overhauling the legal system later this year to reduce the number and size of fraudulent whiplash claims, which currently add £35 to £40 to every car insurance premium.” However, it wasn’t all good news as premiums for young drivers aged 17-19 continued to rise by 1.3% from £1,341 to £1,357.99. The average premium for women fell from £528.76 to £450.43— a drop of 14.8% compared to last year’s first quarter. Men’s premiums fell on average 9.8% from £609.66 to £550.10. There was also some variation in price drops by region with Colchester seeing prices fall by 18.31%, Medway by 17.51%, Halifax by 14.63%, Stoke-onTrent by 14.17% and Lincoln by 14.07%.

COUNTY SENIOR FOOTBALL with Michael Clarke

Week 31 in the County Senior League proved to be a busy week once again, with 18 league games and a League Cup Semi-Final taking place. League Cup Semi-Final After a previous postponement due to bad weather, the first League Cup Semi-Final between Swinton Athletic and Grimethorpe Sports took place this week at the Memorial Ground. Grimethorpe looked set for their second final in three years, as they led 3-2 until the 89th minute. However, twice winners Swinton equalised taking the game to extra-time. Swinton ran-out 6-3 winners in the end, with goals from Jake Ford, Regan Kelly, Shawn Mitchell, Joshua Moore (2) and Thomas Needham. Premier Division Goals from Ben Furniss, Bradley Hanson and Jamie Hopkins (2) gave league leaders Frecheville a 4-3 home win against Denaby United. It was good weekend for the top five, with all five picking up victories. Second place Stocksbridge, just four points back, were 2-0 winners away at sixth placed Jubilee Sports. Stocksbridge have played five games less than Frecheville. There were big wins for third placed AFC Penistone Church Reserves and fourth placed North Gawber Colliery. Penistone beat Houghton Main 4-0 at the Memorial Ground, and North Gawber beat Handsworth Parramore Reserves 3-0 at Woolley Miners Welfare, with the help of two goals from Luke Marsden. Fifth placed Swinton Athletic, fresh from booking their place in the League Cup Final midweek, beat bottom side Millmoor Juniors 3-1 at Grange Park. Mark Clare scored all three goals for Swinton. Simon Chadburn scored four goals to inspire Wombwell Main to an impressive 6-1 away win over South Kirkby Colliery. Billy Evans was also on target twice for Wombwell. Mid-table sides Grimethorpe Sports and Oughtibridge WMFC shared the spoils after a 1-1 draw at Sheerien Park.

Division One Runaway league leaders Dodworth Miners Welfare needed a victory on Saturday to confirm themselves as Division One Champions. However, things did not go to plan, as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Brinsworth Whitehill. With Hepworth United beating Stocksbridge Park Steels Development 5-2, it means that Dodworth can still theoretically be caught. Second placed High Green Villa made it three straight victories, with a 2-0 home win against Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915. High Green cannot catch leaders Dodworth. A hat-trick from Cameron Williams helped AFC Dronfield to a 4-1 home win over Kiveton Park. Jordan Lumley was also on the scoresheet for Dronfield. Sheffield Medics scored three for the second week running, as they beat Caribbean Sports 3-1 at Norton Playing Fields. Elsewhere, Hemsowrth Miners Welfare Reserves were held to a 2-2 draw at home by Silkstone United. Division Two League leaders Burngreave FC claimed their 15th League win of the season in style, with a 16-1 home win over Thurcroft Miners Institute. Notable mentions go to Jon Iufudu who scored five and Mubarik Ahmed who scored a hattrick. Iufudu had also scored twice midweek, when Burngreave beat third placed Manor Hotel 3-1 despite being down to 10 men. Eight points back in second are Boynton Sports, who beat Swinton Athletic Reserves 4-2 at Swinton Miners Welfare. It was a bittersweet day for Daniel Parker, who scored twice for Boynton but was later sent-off for a second bookable offence. James O’Brien bagged a brace as Sheffield Bankers Reserves beat Maltby Main Reserves 4-2 on Wednesday night at Norton Playing Fields. Goals from Liam Johnson, Matthew Parson and Lewis Dargie helped give Maltby Main Reserves an hard-fought 3-2 away win against AFC Dronfield Reserves.

I woke up this week, looked out of the curtains, and went back to bed. It was raining. Again. I don’t know about you, but although I don’t usually mind winter weather, I’ve had enough, and want to feel some sunshine again. Luckily, later in the week, I did just that with a visit to perhaps my favourite venue, Rode Pool in Cheshire. It’s just one of a fine portfolio of waters on the Stokeon-Trent Angling Society card, an ancient estate lake covering forty odd acres, renowned for tench and bream, with a head of carp I’m led to believe numbers just over one hundred, which are notoriously difficult to tempt. After fishing it hard last season for the tench and bream, this year, I’m determined to catch one of the elusive carp, so I was really looking forward to a session this week. It’s a typical Cheshire estate lake, silty, large bloodworm beds, surrounded by Dogwood, sedge and rhododendron, and nestled amongst woodland. It’s a haven for bird and wildlife but has a reputation as a tricky water. Indeed, many anglers, despite a few visits, have yet to catch a fish of any description from the clear waters, but in spite of it’s trickery, it’s a place I’ve fallen in love with over the past couple of years; it’s the one place where I really enjoy my fishing… It’s days only too, and with only a third of one bank available to set up on, it can offer a challenge! I love it! It can also be a moody water. Changes in air pressure, wind direction and water clarity all have a huge impact of the residents, as does angling pressure, so to catch a carp is a real achievement, and one I’m hoping to accomplish fairly soon, so it was with carp in mind that I ventured forth. It’s a two rod rule on the water, so I opted for my Sonik Vader X rods, which, with a 2.75lb test curve, give me that extra little bit of power to hit the far bank reed line at around eighty yards. Last year, I elected to use the S3 1.5lb test curve rods to fish a little closer in, but for greater distances, I needed a bit more backbone… the Vader X are superb value, and perform the task admirably so are perfect for the job. From other anglers with far more knowledge than I, I’m told that Rode Pool doesn’t respond particularly well to large beds of bait, not least because the resident waterfowl can see it, and have no compunction about clearing it up as fast as you can put it in! As a result, I use free offerings very sparingly, and whilst fishing last year, used none at all, preferring to use a method feeder approach to put bait on the spot. This year, most of my angling will be done with bite-size bags comprising four or five baits, to offer a mouthful and no more. If I get a chance, I want the carp to find my hook bait, not a load of freebies! Dark baits are apparently the way forward, providing an unobtrusive platter of fodder for the unsuspecting target. I’ve found already that using brighter, lighter baits does tend to gain less piscine interest, and I put that down to fish being unwilling to silhouette themselves over lighter groundbait to the waiting birds of prey above. The woods are full of heron nests, there are buzzards and cormorants too, so it pays to blend in! This season, I will be mainly using the new Smokey Jack range from Spotted Fin. I tried it at the end of last season on other waters whilst it was still in the test phase, and did well, so I’m hoping that the deep red colour and smoky, fishy, spicy aroma will prove a winner; this water will provide a real test for it, so it will be interesting to find out! Popped up baits are also a winner apparently, so on one rod, a small 12mm pink Catalyst pop up was fished in conjunction with a pva bag of four Smokey Jack bottom baits, and on the other, a Frank Warwick Masala Spice wafter was fished on a long hair, again, with a bag of four dark red freebies. Both were cast out and left to settle… I’ve been over much of the accessible water with a

ORCHARD PARK

Deeper Pro+ sonar during the colder months, and the mapping feature allows me to look back at the data to determine exactly what I’m fishing over. For the most part, the venue has a fairly uniform depth, with some hard spots, and plenty of softer ones, so once identified, it comes down to other deciding factors, such as wind direction and the track of the sun. As I’ve mentioned, it isn’t deep, so the sun can have a real impact within a few minutes, and I chose my peg knowing that the water would be quickly warmed in front of me yet would retain an area of inviting shadow in front of far bank cover; an ideal interception zone. For once the weather forecast was reasonably accurate, and within a few hours, the sun was high, and I could feel my cheeks burning as the sun shone strongly. Other anglers had set up much further down the lake, fishing into a chill wind, but I was in shirt sleeves, enjoying the sun on my face, hidden amongst the woods… blissful! I watched the water intently, but saw no signs of fish at all, with the exception of grebe which surfaced with roach pinched in their beak. It didn’t matter, it’s that kind of water, and I enjoyed watching kingfishers zip across the surface, coots and duck engage in mating battles, buzzards swoop, and all manner of woodland birds chatter as the day passed. Eventually, as I watched my bobbins, one of them rattled towards the alarm, and the receiver buzzed to alert me. I was on the rod quickly, sweeping it skyward to pick up all eighty yards of line and connect with the fish. Instantly, I could tell it wasn’t a carp, but instead one of the fine green tench for which the water is famed, and it was quickly defeated, safely netted, photographed, and returned. It had picked up the spicy Masala wafter, an orange bait amongst the freebies, and this fact was quickly noted in my book in an effort to compile the ‘bigger picture’. Recasting the bait, I sat back to enjoy more tranquillity and was surprised when just a few minutes later, the bobbin on the same rod was snatched upwards sharply. I watched intently, but it moved no more, so I can only put it down to one of the bigger roach being unable to deal with the size of the bait and dropping it. Sadly, the solitary tench was my only bankside visitor and as the temperature plummeted as the sun disappeared behind the trees, it was time to pack up. Between five anglers, I’d had the only fish of the day, and although it wasn’t the carp I’d hoped for, it was a positive start to my campaign as I love catching tincas too! None of us had seen so much as a glimpse of carp either, which was disappointing, but to be truthful, their absence just adds to the allure of the place, giving it an extra sense of mystery… where could they be hiding? Are they feeding yet? Has anyone else caught and keeping it a secret? I’m hoping to fish it at least once weekly for the next few months, so this column may well become a record of failure… or a beacon of success! I can only hope it’s the latter, but I’ll let you know!

U17 EURO FINALS DRAW MADE AT Follow Your Local Team Every Week In The Mercury ST. GEORGE’S PARK MILLERS WORTHY WINNERS - WARNE Millers Manager Paul Warne reflected on his side’s 3-2 win over Fleetwood Town at the AESSEAL New York Stadium this afternoon. “I thought we played really well today,” said Warne. “I thought we deserved the win but could have done with more goals, really. I’m really pleased. “Against Peterborough last week I thought we were outstanding – it was one of our best performances of the season. The first 25 minutes at Charlton we were good, conceded a sloppy goal and we weren’t as great second-half. “What I am well aware of with six games to go before today was it’s not so much about the performance, it’s about picking up points. I think we played against an excellent Fleetwood side who haven’t conceded in five games. For us to go a goal down must have put a lot of doubts in a lot of people’s minds.” The Millers overturned Fleetwood’s early lead thanks to a Nathan Pond own goal and Joe Newell volley before Cian Bolger headed the visitors level. Thankfully, Richard Wood bundled home his second goal in as many games to give Paul Warne’s men all three points. “I’ve got a great group,” he continued. “They believe in what we’re trying to do and what we’re trying to teach them. To come off the pitch 3-2, you could see the tension with me included. Everyone desperately wants to get to the Play-Offs and people are fighting for different things at this time of the season. There’s going to be a lot of ups and downs but to get a home win and with two more home games to go, hopefully we’ll be pretty close to being in the Play-Offs. “We asked the lads to move the ball quickly. We didn’t really get through them, we asked them to get round them. I thought we started the first 30 seconds okay. They got the goal off the set-piece which is disappointing. We had a lot of the ball but we didn’t move it as quick as I wanted. They got men behind the ball as they do. They made it difficult for us. “I thought Newelly today was unplayable. His touch from the skies near the end was an awesome thing to see. I know goals will always get headlines but I like

little touches of class. Newelly’s definitely got that. I’m very proud to be his manager at the moment. “I think, generally, we created a lot more chances except for a couple of set-pieces which didn’t cause us loads of problems but they have got an attacking threat. “Box to box we were excellent. We controlled the game really well and the more the game goes on, I thought we looked stronger. “It’s just a really pleasing day at the office. When we went on a run of winning seven games everyone thinks you’re going to win every game. Football is not like that, sport is not like that. We played against the in-form side in the league and to score three against them when they haven’t conceded for 600 minutes is testament to the group I’ve got.”

Rotherham United recently surprised supporter Margaret Wright, who was celebrating her 75th birthday at the home game with Peterborough United at AESSEAL New York Stadium. The club were tipped off that Margaret would be present for the recent game with Posh and that she was marking her special day by attending the match. Margaret was given the opportunity to come pitchside to meet staff and officials before watching the Millers warm-up at close quarters from the home dugout. The surprise wasn’t done there though because soon

FERGUSON PLEASED TO HIT 50 POINTS Darren Ferguson was pleased to see his side reach the 50-point mark as Rovers picked up a point on the road at Gillingham. Rovers battled to a goalless draw at a blustery MEMS Priestfield Stadium on Saturday, but Ferguson felt their first half performance could have seen them pick up all three. “Given the first half we had we feel we should be coming away from here with three points, even with the chances we had in the second period we should have won the game, we haven’t really been tested and we limited them to one shot on target,” he said. “I thought we played very well in the first half, but we didn’t capitalise on the control and dominance we had over Gillingham. They’ve changed their shape and thrown two big lads up top, they went direct and caused us more of a problem. “Steve Lovell has done a great job here, he’s made

them a hard team to play against. But I’m delighted to get a point to reach that 50-point mark with seven games left to play, with five of them at home and we have to make that count.” Rovers had the better opportunities to win the game, with chances from Mathieu Baudry and Alfie May among their best efforts, but Ferguson was happy to see the game out with an assured performance at the back in the second half. “We’ll always look to improve, and we will always look to take positives out of these games, we’ve kept a clean sheet and we’ve looked solid at the back, I’m very pleased with our defensive performance,” he added. “Our defensive line was excellent, we played the offside trap well, Luke McCullough protected them well and then I wanted to bring Andy Butler on just to freshen things up and make sure we had three big

heads at the back to see it through. “They grew in confidence as the game went on and they started to get a foot hold in the second half and they were dominant for parts of it, but we dug it out and got a good point on the road.”

to keep a clean sheet as Rovers maintained their recent run of good results, with a hard-fought draw to push them over 50-point mark. “We’re very happy to get a clean sheet here, it’s a tough place to come and they put us under all sorts of pressure in the second half, but we’ve dealt with it very well and been able to see the game out,” he said. “We were very good in the first half, but we didn’t really get going after the break and we’re disappointed with how we played in the second half. But we’ve ground out another result and not conceded. “The pitch was dry and bobbly and it didn’t suit the way that we wanted to play, we had to be more direct and we did alright with that in the first half - we dug deep to create more chances later on in the game.” Wright has started the past five games in Sky Bet League One, being a part of a defensive unit that has conceded two goals in the period, and he is

looking forward to the competition for places in the side heating up as players return from injury. “Luke McCullough has shown how good a player he is, Andy Butler came back in to the side, and Tom Anderson is coming back soon too, I will have to make sure that I’m playing at the top of my game on a consistent basis to keep my place in the team,” Wright added. “Me and Mathieu Baudry have glued really well together over the last few games, we haven’t played too much together but we’ve been teammates for two seasons now, we do a lot of work in training together and we have a strong understanding. “I’m a player that likes to focus on the games, I’m enjoying my football here and I’m delighted to be here for the next couple of seasons, I feel like I’ve improved a lot and I’m looking forward to hopefully continue that.”

WILDER’S BARNSLEY VERDICT The Blades boss thought Barnsley’s desire to stay in the division was greater than United’s desire to get out of it. Chris Wilder admitted Saturday’s loss at Barnsley was a ‘damaging result’ in United’s quest for a play-off place. And although the Blades boss was encouraged by how his side came from behind to lead at Oakwell, he was bitterly disappointed

in the manner of the performance their after, as goals from Oliver McBurnie and Tom Bradshaw won it for the Tykes, despite strikes from John Fleck and Leon Clarke. The United chief remarked: “They started better and faster than us. The team fighting to stay in the division had more drive and desire than the team wanting to get out of division. “We played too slow,

we played backwards and square, they won more first and second balls and obviously they were the better team in the first-half. “We changed a couple of things round and for 25 minutes of the second-half we dominated and showed the character we have within the group.” Wilder added: “We got ourselves level and then in front and from that point there should only be one

winner. “But we didn’t get the third and fourth that would have demoralised the opposition, it’s been like that for most of the season, let alone the last three games. “We are a really good side at times, a really good side. But we’ve got to make sure we get the results our performances deserve, and this is another damaging result for us.”

LATE GOAL LEADS TO DISAPPOINTMENT An all-action South Yorkshire derby ended in disappointment for the Blades following a late goal. Goals from John Fleck and Leon Clarke put the Blades head going into the final 20 minutes but Tom Bradshaw scored late on to win it for Barnsley. Stearman did not recover from his hamstring problem in time to feature and Wright slotted into the defence. Wilson and Duffy were recalled to the bench after injury issues. Barnsley made the better start and had twice put United under aerial pressure in the first two minutes ahead of Moncur twisting and turning before striking the Blades crossbar. United’s first chance was an Evans halfvolley which was over and great link-up play between Clarke, Evans and Lundstram created an opportunity for the latter but he was unbalanced as he shot. The home side, however, went ahead on 25 minutes. A fortunate corner was only half cleared to the edge of the box

and GARDNER beat Moore with a rising, drilled, powerful effort. Boss Wilder was clearly not happy with United’s first half performance and made a change on 38 minutes with Evans replaced by Sharp, who went close from Basham’s cross with the last effort of the half. United began the second period with renewed vigour and Baldock had fired over before Duffy replaced Brooks. Isgrove robbed Fleck to create a Barnsley break but Moore saved Moncur’s deflected effort and in a frantic start to the second half, a Stevens shot was blocked and Sharp was ushered away from the rebound. United levelled before the hour, though. Overloading players down the left, there were a number of intricate touches before FLECK smashed home. Goalscorer Fleck’s corner saw Clarke head down but Basham’s effort was deflected wide and a spell of pressure resulted in a second Blades goal. Again

United caused Barnsley problems down the left and CLARKE was well placed to hammer into the top corner, much to the delight of the travelling Blades fans. Barnsley, to their credit, responded to the setback and on 74 minutes the game was level again. Hammill’s shot was parried by Moore and McBURNIE touched in the rebound from close range. Fleck was crowded out as he looked to benefit from Baldock’s pull-back and Stevens fired across goal after Duffy’s pass as United went in search of a winner. However, a decisive fifth goal came at the other end for the home side on 88 minutes. Tykes striker Moore got around the back of the defence and his powerful cross was met by substitute Bradshaw at the far post. Wilder threw on an extra striker for the remaining minutes in Wilson but the only chance to level saw Sharp shoot over after tight, neat play around the box by Clarke and Fleck.

UNDER 23s EXTEND UNBEATEN RUN United’s U23s made it four games unbeaten after coming from behind twice to earn a point at Vicarage Road. Second half goals from Simeon Oure and defender Callum Semple helped the Blades secure a deserved share of the spoils on Monday afternoon. United almost found a breakthrough on 25 minutes as trialist Beckley picked up the ball and hit the side netting from a tightangle. Just past the half hour mark, Dewhurst was forced into a save,

getting down well to push away a shot from Charles. The young stopper would be called into action again prior to the break as a through ball saw Cassidy in behind, but Dewhurst came out quickly to thwart the danger. After the break though, Dewhurst couldn’t deny the hosts going in front as MUKENA let fly from range and a wicked deflection saw it find the back of the net. United levelled proceedings immediately though, as OURE stab home from close range following a scramble in the box. Following the two goals, the game opened up again, although neither side created anything of note.

That was until the 75th minute, when CHARLES let fly from just outside the area and his shot nestled into the bottom corner leaving Dewhurst with little chance. But with 79 minutes on the clock, the Blades levelled for a second time. Mallon found space on the left and his pinpoint cross was headed home powerfully by SEMPLE, to earn the Blades a point. Blades: Dewhurst, Portman, Cantrill, Oure, Doherty, Semple, Gilmour, Slater, Hutchinson, Beckley (Parkhouse 73, Broadbent 88), Mallon. Unused: Kelly, Williams, Gordon.

BEATEN BY THE BETTER TEAM Jos Luhukay conceded that Fulham were the better team in S6 as the Londoners flexed their promotion muscles with a 1-0 win. Alaksandar Mitrovic scored the only goal of the game late in the second half to keep the heat on Cardiff in second place. And Owls boss Luhukay said there was no doubting the victors as Wednesday’s threegame winning run came to an end. “Fulham were the better side,

particularly in the second half. They could have scored more goals than they did. “Joe Wildsmith made some very good saves, some in a one on one situation, so for me they were the better side today. “It was frustrating for us because we saw a lot of the ball but Fulham are a very good side who will always try to attack. “Today we saw a team who are fighting for automatic promotion and I think Fulham will fight all the way to the end.”

To add to a bleak afternoon for Wednesday, influential midfielder Barry Bannan was withdrawn with a possible re-occurrence of his groin injury. Luhukay added: “This is the story of our season, we seem to lose one player every game. “Barry is a very

important player for us and we lost 20 or 30% of our football when he went off. “It is too early without the doctor’s report but he will not be available for QPR on Tuesday. “It looks like it could be a similar injury to before but we must wait to see what the report will say.”

COME BACK STRONGER On one hand, Tom Lees is firmly focused on the remaining five fixtures of the 2017/18 Sky Bet Championship campaign. The experienced defender has missed a big chunk of the season through injury but has seamlessly stepped back into the thick of the action. And while the 27year-old now wants a strong finish, it’s fair to say the ex-Leeds man has an eye on next season and putting right some wrongs from the past months. “It’s difficult when you lose that momentum and feelgood factor and it can be difficult to turn it around,” he said. “We have got a

way to go in terms of improving, the stats don’t lie, we need to be better and everybody will improve for next year. “We have to be honest and not shy away from anything, we’ve had a tough year and everybody will want to end it well. “We have to finish on a positive note and the players will want to prove that they deserve to be here and in the team next season.” He added: “We have been in the play-off mix for the past two seasons, we have to use that experience and remember the feelings we had when we lost and use all those things to get in there again and hopefully go one better. “We have got a lot to improve on and I’m really hoping we can do that because it is a big year for us next year.”
