WALK YOUR WAY ROUND SHEFFIELD’S FOOTBALL HISTORY Sheffield is well and truly the home of Association Football and we have the pictures to prove it. Photographs from Sheffield Libraries, Archives and Information that show the beginnings of football in the city from 1857 onwards have been incorporated into a new smart phone app that maps the key places involved in the creation of the world’s number one sport. The archives team has worked with local historians Martin Westby and John Wilson and Sheffield tech company Llama Digital to create an app which takes
people on a walking tour of the historic places in our city that played their part in making football the game that it is today. The ‘Sheffield: The Home of Football’ app introduces users to the places and people that made Sheffield the home of football. It’s a walking guide to the heritage of Sheffield football covering the rich history of the city’s four remaining clubs (out of the 95 that existed between 1857 and 1889) and the Sheffield & Hallamshire County F.A. (England’s first County Football Association). The walk is just over 4-and-a-half miles long
and has 10 stops en-route with an audio guide throughout read by local actor Roger Bingham. The walk can be done at any time and should take around 90 minutes. People should allow another 30 minutes of ‘extra time’ if they want to stay longer at the various points of interest. The app uses historic images and so-called maps mash-ups showing Sheffield in the 1850s and today, meaning walkers will be transported back to the Victorian era when the world’s first football club started in Sheffield. The journey covers the second half of the 19th century telling the stories
/THEMERCURYNEWSPAPER
of the first ever football derby, the world’s oldest football cup, the first floodlit game at Bramall Lane and the ancient football grounds where the games were played, many of which are now long gone. The walk begins at the tomb of Nathaniel Creswick at Heeley Parish Church, the cofounder of the world’s oldest football club, Sheffield FC, then winds its way into the city centre past sites of the early grounds and significant events which shaped the game that was to become the most popular sport in the world. It finishes at
Highfield Library, the site of Sheffield Wednesday’s first ground. For those who are not keen on walking, or are unable to, they can still view these historic sites from their armchair or anywhere in the world just by using the free app. The app has been downloaded over a hundred times in its first week and the number of users is growing.
The app is downloadable at https://situate.io/ homeoffootball and there is a group on Facebook set up to support those using the app. Just search ‘Sheffield Home of Football’.

SPECTATORS URGED TO PLAN JOURNEYS AHEAD FOR THE TOUR DE YORKSHIRE With thousands of people expected to watch the 2018 Tour de Yorkshire and Asda Tour de Yorkshire Women’s Race live on Thursday 3 May and Friday 4 May, getting around parts of the region will be busier and some bus services will be temporarily diverted. Passengers travelling in Doncaster, Rotherham and Barnsley are advised to plan their journey ahead. “This great event attracts thousands of spectators from near and far each year and we expect more people than usual
to rely on public transport as they come and watch the race in South Yorkshire. Some bus routes will be directly affected over the two days the region plays host to the race, so we’re asking passengers to plan ahead before travelling”, says Tim Taylor, Customer Services Director at South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE). “During events like these people often choose to leave their cars at home and switch to buses and trains as the best way to travel. We’d like to see more people
make that a permanent change or at least try it for a few days a week for all or part of their commute. We also want to see people getting inspired to take their bikes out and integrate cycling into their daily commute. It adds to a healthier lifestyle, it’s cheaper and good for the environment.” In its fourth year, the international bike race has expanded from three to four stages and will cover all four corners of Yorkshire, taking in 169 villages, towns and cities. Roads on and connected to the Tour de Yorkshire route in Doncaster, Rotherham
REGIONAL EDITION
and Barnsley are anticipated to be closed on a rolling basis lasting no more than one hour, apart from the start and finish lines, when the closures will last for longer. Spectators should try to use public transport to get them to the best viewing points on the route. Bus journeys will take longer and some may take a different route than their usual one so passengers who normally travel around the area are advised to plan their journey ahead. Service updates will also be available at Barnsley and Doncaster
interchanges and at Travel South Yorkshire twitter account @ tsyalerts on the day itself. As the competition attracted a record 2.2 million spectators last year, Northern Railway plan to increase capacity on trains calling at Elsecar, Barnsley, Silkstone Common and Penistone just after the morning peak on Friday 4 May. Spectators planning on taking their bike on the train should check with the operating company beforehand as capacity is limited. Cycles are not allowed on South Yorkshire’s buses and trams.

What’s made of leather and sounds like a sneeze? A shoe. My girlfriend dumped me because of my obsession with plants. Why do trees seem suspicious on sunny days? Dunno, they’re just a bit shady. I’ve just checked the BMI chart. Apparently I’m 5 inches too short. The police came to my house and asked where I was between 3 and 5. I told them pre school. I’m really starting to hate these stupid little Russian Dolls. They’re so full of themselves. I grew up in a rough area.. As a child people would cover me in chocolate, cream and put a Cherry on my head... It was tough in the Gateau. When I was a kid my mum used to tuck me in. TRAVELLING? MANAGE YOUR ALLERGIES It’s Allergy Awareness Week in the UK, and this year the campaign is focused raising awareness about how to manage allergies when travelling. Whether you have a serious food allergy or suffer from seasonal pollen allergies, here’s some of our top tips for travelling safely and comfortably with allergies. Pack extra medication Whether you need an EpiPen or rely on daily allergy tablets to minimise allergy symptoms, make sure you pack more than you think you need and if you’re flying, keep it in your carry-on luggage so it’s with you at all times. If you’re carrying prescription medications you may want to also have a GP’s letter with you to help make going through customs easier. Finally, check any rules about storage and be aware of how temperature change might impact your medications. Choose self-catering If you or someone you’re travelling with has a food allergy, self-catering accommodation can make mealtimes
much more straightforward. By purchasing ingredients yourself, you’ll know what you’re eating is safe and won’t cause any problems. Take bedding For dust allergy sufferers, bringing your own bedding with you can help ensure you sleep well wherever you are. Use translation cards If you’re travelling in a country where you don’t speak the language, translation cards can help you communicate with hotels and restaurants more easily. AllergyUK offers plastic printed cards – with English on one side and another language on the reverse side – that clearly outline your allergy. It’s a simple step to give you confidence and peace of mind that you’re being understood. Bring disinfectant wipes If you have a severe allergy that means you have a reaction by coming in contact with even trace amounts of the allergen, disinfectant wipes can help you quickly clean new environments where you might
be eating – for example the tray table of an airplane. Plan ahead Planning ahead can help you learn what you need to know about your destination before you book your holiday. There are wonderful resources online that make it easy to check things like the pollen count in a particular area or learn from other allergy sufferers what to watch out for when eating out. Doing this research ahead of time will mean you’re not caught off guard when you arrive and can focus on enjoying your holiday. Communicate often If you have a serious allergy it’s not something you’re likely to forget. But for hotel managers, waiters, flight attendants and other people you come in contact with on holiday, it may be a detail that’s eventually forgotten. Mention your allergy early and often; when you make the booking, ahead of when you arrive, when you arrive, and while you’re ordering.

FAST & FURIOUS LIVE MISSION LEADER SREECHES INTO THE ARENA LANDS IN SHEFFIELD The action and excitement from one of the most popular and enduring film series of alltime will come to life in this ground-breaking live-arena tour. Creative director and executive producer, Fast & Furious Live, Rowland French said: “It’s been years in the making, and we are beyond excited to finally show fellow fans what we have been creating in order to bring Fast & Furious Live to the global stage. With this mix of extraordinary stunts, special effects, cuttingedge 3D-projection mapping – as well as drivers pushing their own limits — every performance will create an unforgettable experience for the live audience. Twenty-three cities across 14 countries is just the beginning for Fast & Furious Live.” The adrenaline-fueled, twohour show is set to be the most spectacular live arena production ever produced, featuring precision performance driving and newly created physics-defying stunts. Using favourite cars and locations that criss-cross the globe along with key scenes from the film series – created via state-of-the-art 3D projection mapping – fans will be transported straight into this
immersive extension of the Fast & Furious movies. “Fast & Furious Live will allow audiences worldwide to experience the extreme action sequences from the franchise through an authentic live experience,” said Vince Klaseus, President, Universal Brand Development. “With this live show, we are redefining fan access and bringing audiences closer than ever to their favourite movie moments.” Audiences will feel the heat from flaming exhausts and marvel at vehicular acrobatics as scene after scene unfolds enhanced by the most advanced digital projection technology imaginable. Featuring several original cars from the films, as well as exact replicas of fan favourites — from Dom’s legendary Dodge Charger to the flip car from Fast & Furious 6, Fast & Furious Live will evoke some of the boldest moments from the franchise. Thousands of the world’s best stunt performers and drivers applied for the opportunity to join the production and, following extensive auditions, have been whittled down to the ultimate elite team who have started a rigorous 4-month training camp in preparation
for the world tour. They will be joined by some of the world’s leading parkour athletes resulting in a truly global cast who will be performing incredible stunts and neverbefore-seen live action. The cast includes stunt drivers from all over the UK and Northern Ireland. Executive President Touring International Music, Live Nation, Phil Bowdery said: “As the world’s largest live-entertainment company, we have been part of many incredible shows, but we are especially thrilled to be working on Fast & Furious Live, which will offer fans a spectacle on an unprecedented scale.” Tickets for Fast & Furious Live at FlyDSA Arena are on general sale now. Wayne Hussey is taking a break from his day job as leader of the British rock band, The Mission, to go out and play a double fistful of solo shows in late spring 2018, calling in at The Foundry located at Sheffield University on Tuesday 1st May. Taking in shows in places as far flung as Umea in the north of Sweden and Santiago in Chile the tour is entitled ‘Aniversário Tour’. The Portuguese word, aniversário translates as birthday and these shows are a way for Wayne to celebrate his upcoming 60th. In fact the final show of the tour on Saturday 26th May, his birthday, will be in Sao Paulo, Brazil, the city where Wayne has resided for the last 17 years. Wayne says: “I was talking with Cinthya, my wife, and she was asking me what would I would most like to do for my birthday. Besides the obvious I replied, ‘play a show’. And she suggested I do so. As the band is on a sabbatical it has to be solo.
And as rehearsing for one show takes as much time and preparation as it does for a whole tour one thing led to another and here I am. I shall expect lots of presents and happy birthday to be sang to me at all these shows,” Wayne smirks. He continues, ‘I’m writing my memoirs at the moment and it’s keeping me rooted indoors and to my desk so a chance to get away and make a bit of
music for a couple of weeks will be more than welcome, I expect, come May. I’m sure cabin fever will have set in by then.” Wayne’s autobiography, working title ‘By Name And By Nature’, is expected early next year and will be published by Omnibus Press. A concert in aid of the above charity will be held at the Wheatley Working Men’s Club on Saturday, 12 May 2018. I would like to thank all those who have given their time and expertise in organising this event. There have been a number of other events organised by numerous pubs and clubs and I wish to thank them all for their efforts. The Firefly Cancer Awareness Support Group do magnificent work in organising transport to and from treatment centres, and I am profoundly grateful for the (hopefully) life saving treatment their service has made possible for me personally. Also, I would like to say a special thank you to the volunteer drivers of Firefly who give their time so generously. If any other pubs or clubs wish to organise a similar charity event on behalf of the Firefly Cancer Awareness Support Group, please do not hesitate to contact me for any assistance I can give. Firefly can be contacted on 07738390541 C.Bennett Concert Secretary Wheatley Working Men’s Club 01302 360984 38 Wentworth Road Doncaster 01302 324166 or 07985482428

not another blank session? There were four anglers elsewhere on the lake, all struggling similarly, with no fish reported, so I started to with Clint Walker consider changing tactics. As I pondered, the What a change in the weather! It’s gone from tip barely moved, but definitely flinched! Dark Superblend is a low food value product, so I added a few handfuls of 8lb 4oz, and a great way to open my account, Betafin pellets, and a small amount of the hemp so I was pleased. WARNE’S DELIGHT AT SECURING PLAY-OFF SPOT
Millers Manager Paul Warne addressed the press after his side booked a Play-off spot in Sky Bet League One this afternoon. Warne’s men ran out 2-0 winners in a high-tempo affair against Bristol Rovers at the AESSEAL New York Stadium this afternoon. “I’m really pleased,” said Warne. “We started with this group 10 months ago and it’s been a long, hard winter. As everyone knows it’s been freezing but the sun’s out and it came out on my team today. We’ve played a lot better than that. “The lads looked really jaded today. We had Gillingham away Tuesday night and Bristol Rovers didn’t have a midweek game. I thought they looked fresher than us which I don’t normally say about my team. “We’ve asked the lads to step up the last three games and they’ve done that. As a manager of the group of men, I’m really proud.” Michael Smith, voted man of the match for his performance by the sponsors, broke the deadlock with a delightful finish after racing clear down the left flank on nine minutes before Caolan Lavery secured the points in the last minute of normal time. “In fairness, when Smudge went clean through I thought he was taking his shot too early!” said Warne. “I was ready to shout at him and then it went right in the top bin. He’ll be really pleased with that. His work-rate is phenomenal. He takes a bit of a beating, so far him to get a goal is good. “’Lavs’ went on and got a goal as well, so it’s always nice when the strikers score. “I’m really proud of what the lads have achieved,” he continued. “I’ve got a great backroom staff who all work really hard. We set out what we wanted to achieve at the start of the season. We haven’t
FERGUSON: WE DESERVED MORE Darren Ferguson felt his side deserved to take something from the game after being beaten 1-0 by Oxford United in Sky Bet League One. James Henry’s second-half header proved to be the difference at the Keepmoat Stadium, but the manager believes his side had enough chances to earn at least a point. He said: “It’s a game we shouldn’t have lost, we had some clear chances to go ahead before they scored and didn’t take them. It was a game of few chances and we had to take one of them. “I didn’t think they troubled us too much apart from the goal, we started the second-half strongly but the
MAY DISAPPOINTED WITH RESULT Alfie May believes Rovers were unlucky to suffer defeat at the hands of Oxford United in Sky Bet League One. James Henry’s second half header was enough for the U’s to take all three points at the Keepmoat Stadium, but May feels Rovers were the better side and were unfortunate not to take anything away from the game. “It was a tough 90 minutes, the weather didn’t help things but it’s a shame we didn’t come away with three points because we’ve had some great chances and we feel that we’ve been the better team,” he said. “Their keeper was on fire this afternoon, from start to finish he made some very good saves and kept them in the game to be honest, and it’s a shame for all of us that they’ve then gone on and won the game. “After a few opportunities the thought creeps in that it just won’t be our day, I had a good chance against

achieved anything, but at least we’ve given ourselves a chance to try and get promoted. We have to try and refresh the lads now and deal with these last two league games where I can freshen it up a bit. “We’ll try and hit the play-offs football-fresh and football-fit, and just try and get through to the final. It’s still really good what we’ve done. What we’ve achieved is exciting and I’m really proud of them. All of the lads in the dressing room have played a part; some of them have played 10 games and some have played 30. But they’ve all played a massive part. Today I asked them to give me everything again and they definitely did that. “Woody was excellent again. I don’t know how many times he got cracked in the head! I thought Icky did really well. The two centre-halves, I thought, were excellent today. Bristol Rovers had a lot of the ball and put a lot into the box but I thought we were pretty comfortable to deal with it. “Generally, I’m pleased with the way we defended and it’s just nice to get over that finishing line. “On a sunny day today, winning 2-0 with a loud crowd is a proud moment for me.”

Premier Division It is difficult to find where to start in the Premier Division due to the sheer amount of games this week (13 in total). The new league leaders are Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves. They were in action no less than three times this week. They started out on Monday night, with a 2-0 home win over third placed AFC Penistone Church Reserves. They then had a slight setback on Wednesday, as they lost at the same venue 3-2 to North Gawber Colliery, before rounding out the week with a 4-1 away win over Denaby United. Just two points back from Stocksbridge are Frecheville. They had a mixed week, firstly beating Wombwell Main 3-1 away from home, but they lost 1-0 to third placed AFC Penistone Church Reserves on Saturday. Penistone are just a further three points back from Frecheville. Penistone had also beaten Handsworth Parramore Reserves midweek 2-0. There has to be one eye on Swinton Athletic. They sit in fourth place, six points off the place, but they have played fewer games than all of their rivals (three less than Stocksbridge). Swinton only played once this week, recording a 1-0 away win over Wombwell. Houghton Main claimed a vital win at the bottom of the table on Wednesday night. They were 5-2 winners against fellow strugglers Millmoor Juniors. The win was enough to take Houghton Main out of the bottom three. Grimethorpe Sports had a very good week, with two wins to their name. A Lee Bennett hat-trick helped them to a 5-3 win against Jubilee Sports on Tuesday night. Their second win of the week came on Saturday, as they beat Denaby Main 3-1 at home.
key was that we weren’t clinical enough in front of goal. “Both sides were evenly matched, they probably shaded the opening third of the game but then we grew into it and I felt we were comfortable for the majority of the afternoon.” Ferguson made five changes to his starting line-up ahead of the game, and explained that his hand was forced with so many games coming in quick succession. He added: “I don’t think I’ve got much choice in terms of resting players because we’re playing Saturday-Tuesday for a few weeks in a row so players are going to need a break now and again. “It’s tough at this stage of the season and we need to manage players if we’re going to get the best out of them, the centre-back pairing was a tough decision but I decided to go with Baudry and Butler. “The changes were obvious decisions to make because I know how the players are feeling on a daily basis, we needed a freshness in the team and that will hopefully benefit us against Blackburn.” their keeper in the first half and it’s hit his legs and gone away, and when he gets it right in front of him you just know it’s not your day.” Rovers will now look to return to winning ways on Tuesday night as they host promotion chasing Blackburn Rovers, and May says they’ll be looking to spoil the visitors’ chances of promotion. “We treat every game the same and we want three points from every single league game, there is no let up from us, we want to be pushing on to try and get into that top half at the end of the season,” May added. “We don’t take a step back now, we need to keep taking steps forward and we will look to beat Blackburn and Wigan here, they’re massive games against two big teams, we want to stop them from doing what they want to achieve, and we will put a real fight up. “Everyone is playing for something that we play now, Oxford today have been fighting for their lives recently, the games ahead won’t be easy, we have games coming up against teams that want to get into the Championship, it won’t be easy, but we’ll be working hard.”
NEWELL AGREES ONE-YEAR CONTRACT EXTENSION Rotherham United midfielder Joe Newell has signed a one year contract extension with the club which will see him remain at AESSEAL New York Stadium until the summer of 2019. Newell, who joined the Millers from Peterborough United for an undisclosed fee in August 2015, has played 110 times since arriving in South Yorkshire and has been an integral part of Paul Warne’s side this season. The 25-year-old has helped himself to seven goals this season including a last gasp strike against Doncaster Rovers from the penalty spot, and has turned out 40 times to help his side to fourth position in the third tier table. Boss Warne told www.themillers.co.uk: “It’s great for the club and for Joe. “Joe wanted to stay here and by giving him this extension it suited everyone. He deserves it for the season he has had. He has been amazing this year and I’m really pleased for him. “I said at the start of the season that we are trying to build a squad of players here where we obviously tweak every season, but we don’t make wholesale changes. We want to grow a team together, and improve them. I want Joe to be a massive part of our future.”
Division One Goals from Matthew Jacobs (2), Jack Williams and Harley Wilson gave High Green Villa a 3-1 away win over Sheffield Medics at Norton Playing Fields. Second placed Hepworth United were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Kiveton Park. Fourth placed Kiveton Park went on to beat Stocksbridge Park Steels Development at Wales High School on Saturday. Stocksbridge had slipped to the foot of the table, midweek after a 2-0 home loss to Caribbean Sports. Silkstone United leapfrogged Stocksbridge, as they grabbed a 1-1 draw against AFC Dronfield. Division Two Burngreave FC confirmed themselves as winners of Division Two, with back-to-back wins this week. They had to work hard on Wednesday night for a 2-1 away win over Working Wonders. The hard-work did not end there either, as they beat Maltby Main Reserves 5-3 at home on Saturday. It has been a fantastic season for Burngreave, as they have won 18 of their 23 league games. Second placed Boynton Sports were also in good form this week, as they beat Thurcroft Miners Institute 7-0 on Saturday. Third placed Sheffield Bankers Reserves were the side to watch this week if you wanted to see goals. It all started on Monday night, with a 7-1 away win over North Gawber Colliery Reserves. They then beat Worsbridge Bridge Athletic Development 5-3 in an eight goal thriller at Park Road on Saturday. Likewise Caribbean Sports Reserves were also in the goals this week, in a similar fashion to the Bankers. The fourth placed Caribbean beat New Bohemians 5-2 midweek, and then saw-off Working Winders 7-1 on Saturday. Caribbean have scored 92 goals in their 23 games this season, with only Burngreave (113) scoring more).

WILDER ON BIRMINGHAM CITY LOSS The Blades boss says he didn’t enjoy watching his team’s performance in the defeat at St Andrew’s. Chris Wilder was visibly frustrated in the aftermath of Saturday’s loss at Birmingham City. United left the Midlands empty handed, despite Mark Duffy’s early opener on his return to St Andrew’s. And Wilder wasn’t impressed with what he witnessed against
the Blues. He remarked: “We’re always trying to get better and you do have days in this division where the opposition might be better than you. “But I didn’t enjoy watching us, we looked tired and leggy, we didn’t win first balls, we didn’t react to second balls and we didn’t make good decisions. “The players knew they’d press us and be on top of us. We picked
Clayton and Duffy for a reason and it was a blow that Leon wasn’t available. “There was grass in behind and we got off to the perfect start, they come back into the game, but we should have beat their press by going over the top.” The Blades boss added: “Their first goal is a gift. We had great possession on the left, too many touches sees us concede a corner and then two people
then don’t do what is asked of them and the whole place lifted. “They were nervous and we should have built on the pressure having scored early. We made into a 50/50 game with our decision making and that doesn’t suit us at all. “We didn’t threaten enough in the final third, they did, they made better decisions than us and scored a simple second really, with a ball in behind our defence.”
BLADES LEAVE PLAY CONGRATULATIONS TO LEON OFF HOPES HANGING BY A THREAD United’s play-off hopes are hanging by a thread following Saturday’s defeat at Birmingham City. Despite, Mark Duffy’s goal, the Blades were unable to hold out and now face a tough ask to reach the top six with just two games to play. Duffy and Donaldson were recalled to start against their former club. Brooks dropped to the bench after a hectic period of games and Clarke was not included after a back spasm in training. Moore (tonsillitis) and Wright (knee) missed out so Eastwood, Holmes and Wilson were added to United’s bench. Jota scuffed an early shot wide for the home side but United were the quicker into a rhythm - emphasised by the opening goal on seven minutes. Birmingham were caught on the break and after a searching ball from Evans, DUFFY twisted and turned before beating Stockdale at his near post. The subsequent celebration saw the scorer booked. Another breakaway almost brought United a second but Stockdale
this time tipped over a curling Evans shot. Fleck just failed to attach himself to a Baldock cross as United remained on top. The home side hit back just before the half hour, Kieftenbeld’s shot from 25-yards took two deflections and Morrison met a Maghoma freekick but Blackman was well placed to collect. The equaliser, though, arrived on 32 minutes. From Maghoma’s corner, Jutkiewicz took the attentions of defenders before ROBERTS sidefooted home at the near post. United were pegged back for a spell but Birmingham’s next chance was 25 seconds into the second period when Blackman pushed away a header from Jutkiewicz. Boss Wilder threw on another striker, sacrificing a midfielder, confirming his intentions but on 69 minutes Birmingham edged in front. The pace of MAGHOMA got him clear and he slid the ball past Blackman. Brooks replaced Duffy but the young Welsh international was injured
soon after as he took on Morrison. After a period of treatment, in which to stretcher entered the pitch, Brooks was able to continue. The final 20 minutes saw United on the front foot but unable to cause undue problems for the home defence. Wilson replaced Donaldson but again the chances were sparse. Blackman had to deflect a shot from Harding wide on the break, whilst Sharp almost got a touch onto a Brooks chip over the defence. Soon after, Baldock was unable to turn his header towards goal from Sharp’s cross. Six minutes of injury-time offered hope and Blackman added his height to the Birmingham box for a late free-kick but an equaliser was not forthcoming. Blades: Blackman, Baldock, Stevens, Fleck, O’Connell, Basham, Lundstram (Sharp 59), Donaldson (Wilson 81) , Stearman, L Evans, Duffy (Brooks 70) Unused: Leonard, Lafferty, Holmes, Eastwood.

Leon Clarke has been named in the Sky Bet Championship PFA Team of the Year. The experienced marksman has enjoyed an excellent campaign back in the second tier, netting 18 times to date with three matches remaining. Clarke netted twice in the Steel City derby success at Hillsborough
in September and then eclipsed that by scoring all four goals as United beat Hull City 4-1 at the Lane in November. The XI in full is as follows...
John Ruddy (Wolves) Ryan Fredericks (Fulham) Ryan Sessegnon (Fulham)
James Maddison (Norwich) Sol Bamba (Cardiff) Wiliy Boly (Wolves) Tom Cairney (Fulham) Rúben Neves (Wolves) Leon Clarke (Sheffield United) Matěj Vydra (Derby County) Bobby Reid (Bristol City)
DUFFY FRUSTRATED AT BRUM Mark Duffy echoed the sentiments of boss Chris Wilder, by expressing his frustrations following Saturday’s reversal at Birmingham City. Duffy, who netted the opener on his return to St Andrew’s after just seven minutes, felt the Blades were guilty of poor game management. He remarked: “In the biggest game of the season we didn’t really turn up and that’s bitterly disappointing. “Having gone in front we should have controlled the game and grown into it. We conceded sloppy goals and it’s happened too often of late. “We lacked that quality in the final third, we made the game into a fight and the Gaffer said to us that he thought
they had more fight than us and that hurts.” Duffy continued: “There are no excuses, the Gaffer has had a go at us and rightly so. We were flat and its up there with the most disappointing performances of the
season, but we must lick our wounds and try and win the last two matches. “Mathematically it hasn’t gone so we must try and beat Preston and Bristol City and see where that takes us.”

GIVE TOGETHER WE ARE STRONG WE NOTHING Jos Luhukay has praised the whole group on and off the pitch following the Owls’ 3-0 win over Reading on Saturday. Inspired by Fernando Forestieri, Wednesday produced one of their most impressive displays of the season. The Argentinian struck twice which together with a George Boyd strike condemned the Royals to defeat. Luhukay said: “I am very proud of my players but I am proud of everybody here because together we are strong. Alone we are nothing. “Everyone is pulling in the right direction, the players, the backroom staff, all the people here
and of course the fans. “We have players coming back from injury at a good time and we are showing some good signs. “Fernando today was excellent, he is a key player. The players who make or score the goals are in the spotlight.” The Owls boss also explained the decision to hand Cameron Dawson his first Championship start of the season. The young goalkeeper has featured in the FA Cup this term but Luhukay believes Dawson deserves the chance to make his mark in the league. He said: “We are very fortunate in the goalkeeping department
and Joe Wildsmith has done really well in the recent weeks and months. “But Cammy has no experience in the Championship after doing very well in the FA Cup. So in these last three games, it
is important he has the chance to get that experience. “He is a very good young goalkeeper and today he did not have a lot to do but he has a clean sheet and that is very good for confidence.”
UP
When the Owls have had to dig deep during the Championship run-in, the players have not disappointed. Hovering around the wrong end of the table last month, Wednesday moved comfortably away from danger finding a winning formula. Five wins from the last seven games has seen Jos Luhukay’s side edge towards mid-table but achieve much more than this in the bigger picture. With players back from injury, big wins on the board and plenty of goals, a feelgood factor has returned to Hillsborough, which will no doubt bode well
going into the summer preparations. Jos said: “Sometimes I think how is it possible they have the energy to do what they are doing? “We did it in Hull for 98 minutes, eight minutes extra time but the team give nothing up and that is their mentality. “In the last part of the game with Reading, if we have a little bit more precision with the last cross or the pass, we can score maybe four or five goals instead of the three. “Atdhe Nuhiu and Lucas waited for the last cross the last pass but you cannot have everything in football.” He added: “We are creating chances, of course in the last part of the game on Saturday we had one player more, so it was a little easier to play football but they are playing with confidence which is positive for us.”
