RESIDENTS ENCOURAGED TO PUT THEIR BEST FOOT FORWARD With national walking month running through May, Doncaster Council is encouraging residents to get out of the car, put on their comfiest shoes and go for a walk. Sometimes overlooked as a form of exercise, walking briskly can help to build stamina, burn excess calories and make your heart healthier. And you don’t need to buy expensive walking gear to get started, any shoes or trainers that are comfortable, provide adequate support and don’t cause blisters will do.

Nigel Ball, Doncaster Council Cabinet Member for Public Health, says: “Walking is simple, free, and one of the easiest ways to get more active, lose weight and become healthier. And for older people regular walking can also help to maintain stronger bones. You can get more active by taking part in a walk anywhere in Doncaster, whether it’s your local park, a stroll to the shops or taking advantage of the wonderful scenery within our town. Whether it’s the Trans Pennine Trail, a ramble around

Cusworth Hall or Conisbrough Castle, Doncaster provides a feast of opportunities to get up and go for a walk.” “A good walk can do wonders for your mental health too, with physically active people having a 30% reduced risk of suffering from depression. A walk can improve selfesteem, mood and sleep quality, and it reduces stress, anxiety and fatigue.” There are plenty of ways to build walking into your daily routine: • walking for short

journeys can help improve congestion and reduce air pollution • get off the bus a stop early – it could be cheaper and is better for your health • using the stairs instead of the lift • catch up with friends for a quick walk in your local park • download the One You Active 10 walking app for ways to build 10 minutes of extra walking into your daily routine • try out a pedometer app for your phone, you might be surprised how quickly you can build up your number of daily steps As part of the Get

Doncaster Moving programme the council organises a series of free guided weekly walks that are open to all. These short walks are perfect for those who would like to become more active or perhaps lack the confidence and knowledge about where to walk. There are walks to suit all abilities and they’re all free of charge. If you prefer slightly longer walks there are also groups such as the Doncaster Ramblers that meet on a regular basis and everyone is welcome. From 26 May - 3 June, Doncaster

Ramblers will be holding a Walking Festival, with 27 walks taking place over the 9-day period.

HAVE YOUR SAY ON GREEN CITY SHEFFIELD The council has launched a debate around how the city can continue on its journey to becoming a zero carbon city by 2050. The team behind Green City Sheffield has launched a survey and wants people’s views on a number of initiatives around its new six-point plan, contained within the Green City Strategy. They are seeking views from residents and individuals as well as businesses and other organisations and will be launching a new partnership that will tackle these issues. The survey can be

accessed via sheffield. citizenspace.com/ performance-research/ green-city/ The Green City Strategy, endorsed by the council last month, aims to reduce the city’s impact on the climate by taking steps to move to a low-carbon economy immediately and becoming a zero-carbon city by 2050. It also sets out to empower communities, residents, public sector and businesses become resilient to climate change and help to enable the city’s homes and businesses to use sustainable and

affordable energy. It will enable modern, reliable and clean journeys for everyone, ensure air is clean for all and create a green and innovative economy by supporting Sheffield businesses to become more energy efficient and delivering new low-carbon jobs for local people. Green City Sheffield builds upon the ground-breaking work of the Sheffield Green Commission, which was set up in 2016 to tackle a series of issues on sustainability and air quality. The Council has

trialled the largest fleet of hydrogen vehicles outside of London and followed Westminster Council by announcing plans to introduce antiidling measures to stop people leaving their engines running outside schools. By 2020, the Council will have achieved a 30 per cent reduction in carbon emissions, and, by 2025 the Council and its partners will have substantially increased the level of low carbon and renewable energy generation in the city. By 2030, a majority of the city’s energy will be supplied from low

carbon and renewable technologies, with work already being progressed to determine how the Council can use its own assets to generate renewable energy, and develop its existing energy networks. The council is launching a debate around how the city can adopt and stay within an agreed carbon budget, which enables Sheffield to deliver its share of the Paris Agreement; that will limit average temperature increases to well-below 2 degrees Celsius, and will have the aim of ensuring Sheffield becomes a zero carbon city by 2050.

My girlfriend changed after she became a vegetarian. It’s like I’ve never seen herbivore. I woke up with a face full of rice. I must have fallen asleep as soon as my head hit the pilau. When I see lovers’ names carved in a tree, I don’t think its cute. I just think it’s crazy how many people bring knives on a date. After my wife died, I couldn’t even look at another woman for 10 years. But now that I’m out of jail, I can honestly say it was worth it.

Are you a current smoker who wishes to stop smoking? Would you be interested in being supported in your stop smoking attempt by an experienced advisor and use either e-cigarettes or the NHS stop smoking services? Then contact us! Sheffield Hallam University is undertaking an ethically-approved study, funded by Heart Research UK that will explore the effects of e-cigarettes on the arteries and small veins in people making a stop-smoking attempt. All participants will be randomly allocated to one of the three study groups. In the first group, participants will receive free nicotine-rich e-cigarettes and refills for a 3-month period as well as advice on how to successfully stop smoking. In the second group, participants will receive similar advice as well as complimentary, nicotine-free e-cigarettes and refills for a 3-month period. Finally, in the third group of participants will be referred to the NHS stop smoking services and will be reimbursed by the research team for their stop smoking prescription expenses (or will receive £30 of Love2Shop vouchers if they don't pay for prescription costs). Participation in the study will be free and assessments will take place in Collegiate Hall in Collegiate Crescent Campus of Sheffield Hallam University. Participants using their own transport will receive complimentary parking, and all people who will take part will receive a free health check-up as well. This can be a week of terrific progress, as long as you keep very much abreast of the small print. Why? Well, not everything you read or even hear this week is necessarily going to be true. If you can stick to your own single minded vision of things however, huge steps can be taken. Call for more...

There may be part of you that wants to be freer of more intense and restrictive situations. The Full Moon can force some of these into the open, and it may be linked to property, or even where or who you live with. However, make sure that you have a clear grasp of the details. Call for more...

You could surprise people by how single-minded you can be in grappling with a new and exciting strand in your situation. With the Full Moon also emerging in your sector of relating, there really can be a sense of freshness around one involvement. Yet, money and friends do not mix so well. Call for more...

The Full Moon in your sign forges a fine link with Pluto. This combination suggests a conversation can prove to be somewhat fated this week, either in terms of its impact on you at a personal level or in terms of a close relationship. Do listen to your intuition Scorpio. Call for more advice...

You could be forgiven this week for thinking that something has gone awry with the heavens, or at least their influences. Not so! It’s simply that Mars is being tempered by the blurry energies of Neptune, and some of your hopes and wishes could get bogged down in doubts. Call for more...

You are unlikely to be lacking in imagination or inspiration when it comes to some new, rather novel approaches. But the full Moon is asking you to also stay sensitive of the more emotional issues that affect your energy and overall sense of well-being Sagittarius. Call for more advice...

The Full Moon offers a wonderful opportunity to supercharge your involvements, especially with someone who shares an interest, hope, aspiration or key principle with you. By binding together as one, an enormous opportunity is presented to be dynamic and resourceful. Call for more...

Whatever you’re involved in at this time, be it socially, creatively or professionally, you’re going to need to feel at the heart of things, otherwise your attention span may drift. The link between the Sun and Pluto, can see you make significant progress towards your goals. Call for more news...

A truly amazing event unfolds when the North Node or Dragon’s Head as it is known, enters your zodiac sign in its reverse motion for an eighteen month stay. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to initiate a new period of creativity and individuality Leo. Call for more astral advice...

The inner planets of Mercury, Venus and Mars are all located in positive places. However, Mars is caught up in a potentially befuddling angle with Neptune, so when it comes to your expenditure you’ll need to be clear minded about why you choose to spend out and what you’ll gain. Call for more...

If you are applying for any jobs, attending interviews or hoping to raise your profile, your hopes can be high. To make the maximum impact it is going to be very important to choose what you say carefully and to come across with clarity. Be as erudite as possible. Call for more advice...

Someone close may feel that some of your expectations are a little bit unrealistic. They may even seem to pour the proverbial cold water over your ideas. Try not to be deflected by this for if you’re single-minded, this can be a week when your communications are supercharged. Call for more...

DO YOU KNOW THE SYMPTOMS OF STROKE? May is Action on Stroke Month, an initiative that aims to raise awareness on the symptoms and risk factors associated with stroke. In the UK, stroke is the third biggest killer behind heart disease and cancer. Thanks to advances in science and medicine and better awareness, the number of people dying from stroke has almost halved in the last two decades. However an ageing population, rising obesity rates, and unhealthy lifestyles mean many people are at higher risk than ever. When stroke happens, urgent medical treatment is vital – knowing how to recognise the signs and symptoms in yourself and your loved ones could save a life. Know the signs Strokes happen when blood supply to the brain is restricted or stopped. When

this happens, brain cells begin to die, which can lead to serious complications including disability, brain injury and even death. The FAST test is an internationally recognised test to help people spot the signs of a stroke or mini stroke. Learn the acronym and what each letter represents. • F: Facial weakness People suffering from stroke often experience dropping of the mouth and eyes. Can the person smile? Are they having trouble controlling facial muscles? • A: Arm weakness Weakness or numbness in one or both arms is the second sign. Can the person lift both arms and keep them there? • S: Speech problems Slurred words and muddled speech are the third major indicator that a stroke has occurred. Ask them to repeat a simple phrase to test listening and speaking.

•T: Time to call 999 If any of these symptoms are present, call 999 right away; quick medical intervention could save a life. Reducing your risk High blood pressure is the leading cause of stroke and a risk factor that can be managed at least in part through lifestyle changes. Smoking, being overweight, lack of exercise, and unhealthy diet are also risk factors within our control – if you have high blood pressure, speak to your GP about how you can make manageable lifestyle changes to minimise your risk. Atrial fibrillation – a form of irregular heartbeat – also raises the risk of blood clots and stroke. This can be detected during a routine medical check or ECG test.

EQUITY RELEASE - THE FACTS AND MYTHS YOU NEED TO KNOW! Reputable equity release providers will be members of the Equity Release Council, meaning they have all agreed to abide by the high standards and rules set by the industry body. These providers should always act with the best interests of the customer and will have designed suitable plans that come with a no negative equity guarantee. With this in mind, we’re busting the top five equity release myths. There’s no denying it might not be the right route for everyone, but by setting the record straight and understanding the common myths, you might feel a little more comfortable that it could be an option to consider. 1.MYTH: “It’s unregulated” TRUTH: Infact, since 2004, the equity release market has been fully regulated and supervised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) – that regulates all equity release providers and advisors to protect customers and put your mind at rest. Whichever plan you choose, there is significant consumer protection in place. There is also an industry trade body, the Equity Release Council (ERC), that represents providers, qualified advisers, intermediaries and surveyors who work in the sector, giving you extra peace of mind. Members must adhere to the high standards set by the Council which puts in place safeguards for you. 2. MYTH: “I’ll leave my family in debt” TRUTH: Equity release plans offered by Equity Release Council members, whether a lifetime mortgage or home reversion scheme, come with a “no negative equity”

guarantee so there’s no chance of you leaving debt if house prices fall. The way it works is that the amount you release plus the interest accrued will be a debt against your home, but the amount owed to your provider will never be greater than the value of your house. The debt will be repaid from the sale of your home when you pass away or move into long term care. And even if there’s a downturn in the property market and your house was to fall in value (and the sale of your property wasn’t enough to repay the plan), any debt would be written off when the house is sold, so you needn’t worry. 3. MYTH: “I can’t leave an inheritance” TRUTH: Whilst you won’t be able to leave your home behind for your family, the money from the sale of the home will be used to pay off your loan – and anything leftover will go to your estate. If leaving a legacy is important to you, it’s easier to choose plan whereby you can guarantee an inheritance for your loved ones. When you speak to your advisor, let them know your wishes and they can arrange for you to ringfence some of the value of your home and leave it to your family. 4. MYTH: “I can’t move house” TRUTH: With most plans this isn’t true – as long as your new property meets the criteria of your equity release provider, you can usually move and take your plan with you. You won’t have to pay a penalty, however there are costs involved. If you think you may want to move home in the future, it’s worth discussing this with your provider when you take out your plan, although if you don’t this doesn’t mean you won’t be able to move. All the information you need will be explained to you fully before you get your plan. One thing to bear in mind is that you

should check that the value and type of the property you want to buy is an amount that the equity release provider is happy to lend the same amount against. If not, it is possible you’ll have to pay off some of the amount you’ve borrowed early. 5. MYTH: “I could lose my home and be forced to move out” TRUTH: With a lifetime mortgage, you will still be the legal owner of your home. And with a home reversion plan, you sell part of your home in exchange for a cash sum – but you can live there rent free until the house is sold when you pass away or move into long-term residential care. Rules set by the Equity Release Council state that when you take out an equity release plan, you have the right to keep living in your home. So, there you go – we’ve revealed the most common myths that may have made you unsure about equity release. But remember – releasing the equity in your home is a big decision, so it’s important to consider all of your options and weigh up the pros and cons before making any decisions. You should seek independent professional advice, to make sure you understand what’s involved and whether equity release is suitable for you.

EMERGING SHEFFIELD BAND HIGH HAZELS HEADLINE LEADMILL SHOW If there’s ever been a time to catch High Hazels unleash their sumptuous melodic phrasing and majestic pop sentimentality upon the world, the time is now and fortunately they’ll be playing at the Leadmill on Friday 4th May. With eagerly-anticipated new material at the ready and a single set to drop at any moment, the evolution of the Sheffield 4-piece is about to enter its next phase, emerging fresh from the Yorkshire valleys not a moment too soon. For the past few months, James Leesley (vocals and guitar), Scott Howes (guitar), Anthony Barlow (drums) and Paul Musgrave (bass guitar), have been busy. The M1 has become their home as regular trips between their flag-adorned Kelham Island rehearsal room – an industrial workspace in a former factory overlooking the River Don - and The Nave in

Leeds has seen the band writing, rehearsing, recording and even experimenting with strange chord lengths and sonic textures. “We really enjoy exploring new sounds,” drummer Anthony explains. “There’s all these expectations of what we should sound like but that’s the best thing about music; you can take it where you want and it’s not always about doing the same thing, sounding the same or what’s expected of you.” Giving fans a small taste of what they have been nestling in their rolled-up sleeves, High Hazels embarked upon a small run of dates in October and debuted two new tracks. As those fortunate enough to catch the sold out Yellow Arch show in November will tell, the Handsworth 4-piece’s new melodic trajectory is set towards an exhilarating new horizon. “We’ve approached the songs by

looking further into the way we like to sound,” explains James. “Eventually we’ll find a place we’ve never been to before and the new material feels like we’ve found the edges of that place,” he teases. December saw High Hazels play a stripped-back ‘front room’ session for Spinning Discs (which featured a heart-warming cover of The National and limited-edition, hand-written set-lists) and the band returned to The Tramshed’s decks for their own ‘Studio Electrophonique’ drinking and DJ residency playing the songs of their heroes Nick Cave, The Walkmen, Tim Buckley and The Velvet Underground. Last year’s singles ‘Joined at The Lip’ and ‘Sequin Eyes’, gained support from BBC 6music’s Steve Lamacq and held the top spot on Amazing Radio’s chart for an impressive 13 weeks before the band were invited to host their own ‘takeover’ show. Following acclaim from the likes of Dermot O’Leary and The Guardian, the band has also opened for Richard Hawley, The Coral and Slow Club. With High Hazels’ brand new album now well in ear-shot, 2018 is shaping up to be a very exciting year indeed. High Hazels The Leadmill Friday 4th May Tickets £7.00 www.leadmill.co.uk

MORE BANQUET THAN BUFFET LIVE REVIEW ROCK BUFFET THE GROUSE, DARLEY DALE. Word & Pic by Roy Goodall

Over the years local bands in Yorkshire and Derbyshire have criss-crossed the boarder plying their trade and Rock Buffet, a well-established five some are no different. Or are they? Opening with one of my personal favourites, the Oasis hit Rock ‘n’ Roll Star and The Cult’s Little Devil was just the starter of what became a main meal, over two and a quarter hour feast of rock favourites with no mid-set intermission. And then there’s the

set-up. At first glance you’d think these guys are ‘big league’ hitters as the stage was awash with equipment and drum riser. After dipping into ZZ Top, Brown Sugar by The Stones they dragged us all into the third millennium with Foo Fighters The Pretender, another personal favourite. Rock Buffet continued with the feeding frenzy by inserting the ABBA hit Mama Mia. This worked very well with the dance floor full though had been me I’d have kept the high going, but with the brief gap and Metallica’s Sandman, some sat down. The gel of bassist Eddie and Phil smacking the drums made a strong rhythm section that kept the band tight as vocalist Steve sang his heart out with the other Steve and Col on guitars doing the riffs justice.

9

It was also good seeing the Darley Dale crowd sticking with it as they witnessed Rock Buffet cook up twenty eight songs, though under pressure they did repeated an earlier tune. And all this with smiles on their faces which is always a bonus and with the encore featuring AC/DC’s Whole Lotta Rosie and The Darkness hit I Believe In A Thing Called Love, that really was it. As we bid our goodnights and made our way homeward many commented on the set length. Maybe they ought to change ‘Buffet’ with ‘Banquet’. Overall maybe more tunes from the present would have been nice but to be honest, churlish comments like that for such a polished performance really aren’t warranted.

THOR-GODS OF ROCK, BRINGING THE THUNDER TO SHEFFIELD! Over the last few weeks, our area has had some very strange weather. We’ve had cold, we’ve had hot, we’ve seen rain and snow, we’ve seen glorious sunshine. But no thunder...until now! On Saturday 5th May, we’re due to see one heck of a storm in a very localised area as Thor-Gods Of Rock

bring their thunderous show back to Woodseats Working Men’s Club, Sheffield. With a show containing some of the biggest rock hits from the likes of AC/DC, Guns N Roses, Iron Maiden and Aerosmith, accompanied by an eye catching lighting show, complete with pyrotechnics, ThorGods Of Rock have been

described as the band that “put the show back into showbiz.” We last spoke with the band back in January, just before their big anniversary show, just after a line up change saw, guitarist, John Hardman and, bass player, Scott Jordan join the band. So, how has the transition gone? We asked singer and

front man, Lee Dodge. “To be honest, it’s been completely seamless. John and Scott have been with us for 4 months now and it feels like they’ve been with us since day 1. Both of them have really bought in to what we’re trying to do with Thor.” So what exactly are Thor-Gods Of Rock trying to do? Earn a record deal? Make their millions through music? Be seen as the best? “We just want to put the fun back into the local music scene. For a long time, particularly with the younger generation, there’s been a stigma surrounding the Working Men’s Club. You see more and more closing down. When we were kids, the scene was buzzing. Places were packed every week with people wanting to

see the likes of Stage Fright, The Gutter Band, Alexander’s Palace, Fright Nite. Why? Because they put on a show! That’s what we want to bring back. And, slowly but surely we’re seeing more and more youngsters coming back. We like to think it’d because of our efforts but we know it the cheap beer really.” And the proof of the pudding is certainly in the eating with ThorGods Of Rock. Recently, one of Sheffields biggest concert rooms, at Crookes Social Club, became the latest venue to report a capacity, 600 strong, audience for the Killamarsh based rockers with people arriving 2 and half hours before the show started, and it seems to be the norm. Lee explained “It seems to be happening a lot.

We’re arranging to arrive at venues extra early so we can set up and sound check before people arrive but the audience seem to get earlier and earlier,” Jokingly adding “you’d think just one person would give us a hand with the staging!” With over 200 shows under their belt, the schedule to book this show fills up quickly... but it is certainly not your ordinary performance. Thor-Gods Of Rock take the show from the stage, into the crowd, behind the bar and just about anywhere else you can imagine. On top of that, it’s not the black tee shirt and

BELMONT CLUB TO OFFER VISITORS A STOP ON THE TOUR Planning to watch the Tour de Yorkshire as it makes its way through our area? Then why not drop

jeans with these guys, oh no! There’s big hair, bright costumes, a 6’4” frontman wearing leather armour and a cape and then there’s, drummer, Joe Tulley’s, increasingly infamous ‘mermaid leggings’. “Well, black tee shirt and jeans is so boring isn’t it? We just like dressing up really. It’s just something different. It’s nothing that hasn’t been done before. Some of the best clubland bands did it. Frankenstein and The Monsters, The Gutter Band, they all had a little gimmick or two. It’s making sure you stand out from the crowd!” If you’ve not seen this

band yet, make sure you do! The show at Woodseats Working Men’s Club on Saturday 5th May is open to non-members, welcomes families and free entry. Lee told us “We’re really looking forward to it. It’s a massive room, a massive stage to play about on and there’s a pub just across the road for an after party!” So put it in you diaries folks. Woodseats Working Men’s Club, Saturday 5th May. As the band says, “You’ll be Thunderstruck.”

into Hoyland Belmont Club? They are opening their doors to visitors from 10.00 am on Friday 4th May, and while you wait you can be entertained by top local rockers Vyndictive - live on stage from 12 noon! The Ladies Race will be passing through at 9.15 am approximately,

followed by the Mens Race at around 3.00 pm, and so the Club decided to offer something to keep both locals and visitors entertained throughout the day, and show off a bit of good old hospitality!

A concert in aid of the above charity will be held at the Wheatley Working Men’s Club on Saturday, 12 May 2018. I would like to thank all those who have given their time and expertise in organising this event. There have been a number of other events organised by numerous pubs and clubs and I wish to thank them all for their efforts. The Firefly Cancer Awareness Support Group do magnificent work in organising transport to and from treatment centres, and I am profoundly grateful for the (hopefully) life saving treatment their service has made possible for me personally. Also, I would like to say a special thank you to the volunteer drivers of Firefly who give their time so generously. If any other pubs or clubs wish to organise a similar charity event on behalf of the Firefly Cancer Awareness Support Group, please do not hesitate to contact me for any assistance I can give. Firefly can be contacted on 07738390541 C.Bennett Concert Secretary Wheatley Working Men’s Club 01302 360984 38 Wentworth Road Doncaster 01302 324166 or 07985482428

A week of ups and downs this week, and what I wouldn’t give for a period of settled weather! Once again, the temperatures have been all over the place, I never know whether to take a sun hat, coat, an umbrella, or a snowsuit, and if I don’t know what is going on, I’m pretty sure the fish don’t either! With the forecast firmly in mind, predicting overcast and occasional light drizzle, I set off once again in search of double figure bream… I’d heard that a fellow angler had caught bream in excess of 12lb by fishing into deeper water, so pushed my barrow all the way around the lake to the very far corner, nestled against the retaining wall, giving me the option of fishing both rods into open water, or dropping one in the sunny corner if I spotted basking carp. I set the brolly up first, then got everything else ready before making an exploratory cast, clipping up, and winding in. I’d forgotten my distance sticks, so placed the rod down, walked out the feeder to the clip, then placed a small wooden marker on the ground. The Spomb rod was clipped at slightly less to account for depth, then I proceeded to drop a dozen big Spombs on the spot, laying down a bed of pellets in an effort to get enough feed down to attract and hold wandering bream. Both rods were tackled up with small tri-lobe method feeders, both packed with a sticky mix of Spotted Fin Sweet Super Blend, a small amount of Tuna mix and 2mm Betafin pellets from the same stable. As soon as the mix was ready, my feeders flew out to the spot, to be retrieved and repacked every thirty minutes in an effort to keep the spot topped up. On the first, a single grain of corn, and on the second, an 8mm wafter sat hair rigged to size 10 hooks. Perfect. Brew on the go, I sat back to wait and contemplate the weather… As I settled in, periods of dazzling sunlight were followed by spots of rain as the clouds marched across the sky. I stuck my head from under the brolly, noting a drop in air temperature, and was dismayed to see sheets of rain sweeping the horizon. I pulled everything in under the shelter and awaited the onslaught… BBC’s Carole Kirkwood had said ‘light rain’… Think again. I sat under a thunderous battering which I honestly thought might tear the nylon from the spindly frame of my umbrella as the rain absolutely tore up the surface of the lake, ran down from behind me in torrents, and then almost as quickly stopped to be substituted by gorgeous sunshine! I’ve heard of April Showers obviously, but this was special, and resulting in the most astonishing rainbow I think I’ve ever witnessed. I slipped out from under cover and stood on the top of the bank looking down into the water to see if I could spot fish in the corner. The surface was dappled by sun, shadows, and a light breeze, but peering hard into the gloom, I realised I was looking straight at the dark, curved back of a big carp about a rod length out, which appeared to be rooting up the bottom over some freebies I’d thrown in earlier! I quickly wound in one of my rods, replaced the feeder with a lightly shotted rig, and tried my best to tease the baited hook into position in front of the fish! I held my breath as the bait fluttered down, and as I concentrated, I was sure I saw the carp move slightly, and in the right direction towards my offering! The clouds continued to cast shadow and shape onto the water, making it difficult to see exactly where the carp was, or what it was doing, but I held the line in my fingertips, waiting for a positive

indication to tell me that my trap had been sprung! For fifteen minutes, I twitched the bait towards the dark shadow, gently lifting it occasionally to try and attract attention, but to no avail. I needed a break, so opened the bail arm, set down the rod and withdrew back to the top of the bank as the sun came out once more. I could still see it, lurking in the shallows, in water I reckoned to be about three feet deep, but it didn’t appear to have moved much, nor was it clouding the bottom. As the sun broke through the clouds, and shone deep into the depths, I sheepishly realised that for the last twenty minutes, I’d actually been stalking a discarded car tyre! In the past, it looked as though the tyre had been rolled into the water, settled in the murk, and to all intents, looked just like the back of a big fish! Luckily, no one had witnessed my error, and I certainly won’t be telling anyone about it either, but next time, I’ll make sure I have my polarising glasses with me! Although I had a few indications that some bream were passing over the baited area, I didn’t have any proper bites, and anything I did strike at saw an empty feeder returned. I think that perhaps the fish were shying off the feeder, which was a complete change from the previous week when a short hook link was all I could get bites on, so another lesson learned; be prepared to change things. I was on the mark with my baiting, it was top quality foodstuffs, so the rig was the only parameter which could have made the difference, especially as I saw odd slabs roll over the target area… never mind, there is always next week! I did need to catch something though, so returned a day later to a relatively easy club water in search of carp. A one rod rule applies, so a Sonik S3 with a test curve of just 1.5lb was quickly armed with a feeder packed with more Spotted Fin goodies, and a spot a rod length from the bank baited with pellets, corn and particles before the feeder splashed in on top. I usually use a pet food scoop to shovel bait in here, it’s quick, it gets a lot of bait in fast, but recently, the birdlife have quickly realised this too and plunder the spot. As a result, I now use a large Spomb here as well, baiting a tight patch and then catapulting a few pellets in every few minutes to add to the ‘noise’. I’m convinced that the splash of large pellets draws the carp in, so use it to my advantage. The rod was on the rest for only a few minutes before the bobbin started to jump, and the alarm emitted short bleeps as fish attacked the tightly packed feeder. As expected, the bleeps soon became a continuous tone as the first fish ripped off with the bait and headed for deep water. I love playing fish on the soft action Sonik rod, and thoroughly enjoyed the five minute tussle with a decent double figure fish before it slipped into the waiting net. This particular fish had a beautiful scale pattern, and was quickly photographed before it was slipped back, before I put the bait out again in the hope of some more action. It wasn’t long coming. Every thirty minutes or so, the bobbin slammed up towards the butt ring as a selection of fine carp came to the bank, and after around seven hours, I’d banked more than a dozen double figure fish, a single bream, and a solitary (completely unexpected!) chub. I’d also managed to lose one carp after a hook link parted (again; that is the last time I’ll use that ‘top’ brand) but overall, I’d had a much more enjoyable day… and I hadn’t stalked any inanimate objects either! I’m now looking forward to next week, with another two sessions to look forward to; I’m not sure what the next couple of weeks holds, or where I’ll fish, but in truth, I’ll just be happy with a bit of decent weather for a change… otherwise, I may have to go to Australia or somewhere!

SMALLEST OF MARGINS WARNE

Millers boss Paul Warne bemoaned his side’s lack of killer instinct in front of goal after slipping to a last-gasp defeat at the hands of Plymouth Argyle. In an enthralling clash at Home Park, Richie Towell put the Millers ahead with a fine finish but Joel Grant put the game back in the balance, by levelling for the hosts. In the latter stages of the game, Rotherham were looking the most likely winners with home ‘keeper Remi Matthews standing in the way of a Millers victory following a series of fine saves. With sub Caolan Lavery also having a goal chalked off for offside, in the dying minutes, Plymouth rubbed salt into Millers’ wounds when Graham Carey fired home a late spotkick, after the home player was upended in the box by Will Vaulks. Speaking to the assembled media afterwards, Warne insisted his side were left to rue their missed chances in Devon. “It’s the smallest of margins,” Warne conceded. “We could have been two-one up with two minutes to play but they have gone up the other end and got the goal they need. It’s hugely disappointing, I thought we played really well today. “Plymouth started the game brightly but from then on, I thought we were the better side. Marek (Rodak) did not have a save to make in the second half. It’s a pity we didn’t take our chances when we had them and their ‘keeper

FERGUSON PRAISES AMOS PERFORMANCE Darren Ferguson felt the performance of Danny Amos was the main positive to take out of the 0-0 draw at Oldham Athletic in Sky Bet League One. The 18-year-old made his full league debut for the club at Boundary Park, and the manager was pleased with how he dealt with the step up to first-team action. He said: “He was a real outlet for us with the width down the left, and he should be delighted with that performance and it was a reward for the work we’ve done as a club during his development. “He’s good with set-pieces and his delivery was excellent, we should have probably scored

was the man of the match, which says a lot about our performance away from home. “The lads are hurting. They don’t want to lose football matches. We have to learn to be more ruthless going into the play-offs. If you don’t take your chances in games, then you don’t win. It’s easy to criticise on the two goals we conceded but I was critical on the chances we missed. “Will Vaulks went to ground for the penalty, which is always dangerous, but I thought he got the ball. I was disappointed in that and I don’t think my team deserved it.”

Newly-signed first team professional Reece McGinley says the opportunity to ply his trade in a number of different environments has been an essential component in ensuring he was able to graduate from the club’s youth setup. The promising youngster has featured in the Checkatrade Trophy, The Central League, the Youth Alliance League and for the youth sides with his native Northern Ireland this season before adding Evo Stik South Play-off chasing Frickley Athletic to his ever-growing CV recently. McGinley was quick to point to that variety of experience upon signing a deal with the club as he told www.themillers.co.uk of his delight at the opportunity to turn professional with the Millers. “I’m very happy. The club has allowed me to get loads of different experiences, playing in the reserves, the under 18s and then more recently going out on loan playing men’s

He added: “It was a very competitive game, both teams gave everything and my players showed great determination to keep a clean sheet and I was happy with the overall performance. “The performances have been good but we find ourselves in a position where we’re coming up against teams who are fighting for everything, the next two games are very important for us. “It’s frustrating that we didn’t win the game because at times it was there for the taking, we had a couple of moments where the right pass could have resulted in a clear shot at goal.”

COUNTY SENIOR FOOTBALL with Michael Clarke

As we wrap up April and head into May, usually things begin to quieten down, but this year the backlog of fixtures means the exact opposite, with games almost every day this past week. Outside of the league programme there was big news in the S&HCFA Association Cup. The allCounty Senior League Final between High Green Villa and AFC Penistone Church Reserves ended 2-0 in Penistone’s favour. Premier Division Things continue to be interesting in the Premier Division. Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves lead the way. They had a great midweek. On Monday they beat Houghton Main 2-1 at home, and followed that on Wednesday with a 4-2 away win over Handsworth Parramore Reserves. But it was not to be the perfet week for them, as they lost 5-2 at home to Grimethorpe Sports on Saturday. Three points back from Stocksbridge are Swinton (who have three games in hand). Swinton claimed back-to-back away wins this week. Firstly they beat Oughtibridge WMFC 2-1 on Wednesday night, following that with the emphatic 8-1 defeat of Denaby United on Saturday. Third placed Frecheville saw action just once this week, as they fell to a 2-0 defeat to Oughtibridge WMFC. North Gawber Colliery tightened their grip on fifth place, as they beat Denaby United 5-1 on Wednesday. They followed that with a 3-3 draw against Wombwell Main just 48 hours later. Jordan Livett scored eight times on Saturday, as Jubilee Sports beat Millmoor Juniors 12-1 at Grange Park. Division One Division One winners Dodworth Miners Welfare

football,” he explained. “They’ve allowed me to develop the way that I have and I’m delighted to sign a contract. “It’s been good experience being in and around the first team and the Checkatrade game was a great to be involved in. “Being out on loan playing men’s football has been another step-up, so all-round this year has been good.” The 18-year-old has played a pivotal role in Frickley’s rise up the table to become Play-off contenders in the Evo Stik South, impressing manager Spencer Fearn in the process, but he is keen to ensure that he continues to remain in the thoughts of the first team staff with his parent club whenever the opportunity presents itself. “It’s very different. In terms of the crowd, they’re very passionate about each game so it’s a different environment but it’s good because playing in front of a crowd is what I’m aspiring to get to,” McGinley explained. “It’s been a case of when the first team staff have been at games, I’ve had to try and impress them. Playing with and against pros in the reserves has been really good for me too. “It all starts now. Hopefully I can push on from here and try and make a name for myself and get into the team.”

confirmed their dominance in Division One, with a 2-0 away win over second placed Hepworth United on Saturday. Hepworth had beaten Sheffield Medics 4-1 on Monday night. Dodworth have a whopping 23 point lead over their nearest rivals. Third placed High Green Villa remain in the fight for second, following a 2-1 away win over Stocksbridge Park Steels Development on Saturday afternoon. Rob Gorman scored four times for Kiveton Park, as they beat Silkstone United 5-3 at home. Kiveton are only four points behind Hepworth, but have played three games more. Silkstone, rather unluckily, had also scored three times midweek and lost, as they fell to a 4-3 defeat to Brinsworth Whitehill. Division Two Burngreave FC wrapped up the Division Two title following a hard-fought 4-3 away win over Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Development on Saturday. Sheffield Bankers Reserves moved into second place this week, with back-to-back away wins. They beat New Bohemians 4-1 on Thursday night, and then Swinton Athletic Reserves 2-0 on the weekend. Goals from Jake Ballinger, Daniel Parker and Zachary Bennett gave third placed Boynton Sports a 3-1 home win over AFC Dronfield Reserves. A Ryan Hicks hat-trick for Manor Hotel helped them to a 6-3 victory over Working Wonders on Wednesday night. Working Wonders are the team to watch for entertainment this week, as they went on to beat Thurcroft Miners Institute 14-0 on Saturday, with goals from Jonathan Bott (3), Michael Brookes (4), Josh Glover (2), Andrew Gott, Liam Holderness (3) and Thomas Semley.

DISAPPOINTING END TO WILDER THANKS THE FANS AN IMPRESSIVE CAMPAIGN United’s final home fixture of an impressive 2017/18 campaign ended in defeat, to end hopes of a play-off place. Alan Browne scored the only goal of an even contest at Bramall Lane. Boss Wilder made three changes for the encounter with Preston. Freeman returned to firstteam action, with Clarke and skipper Sharp reunited in attack, with Baldock, Lundstram and Donaldson dropping to the bench. The first really opportunity came the way of the visitors has Robinson got the better of Stearman, only to see his shot from inside the area blocked by Evans. In response, United latched onto a second ball and Clarke saw his goal bound effort blocked at the expense of a corner by Davies. The first booking of the game, saw Fisher carded after catching Stevens. That was quickly followed, by Harrop seeing yellow for a late challenge on Basham. Back to the action, Clarke almost forced home the opener at the near post from Stevens low cross, only for Rudd to deny him from point-blank range. As half-time approached, Fleck became the latest into the referee’s notebook, following a miscommunication with O’Connell saw him foul

Harrop. Fleck’s next contribution nearly opened the scoring, but his shot was spectacularly headed over by Cunningham, before the North End skipper denied Freeman from the resulting corner. United were quickly out of the blocks in the second-half, with Clarke testing Rudd from distance. At the other end, Basham had to be alert to sniff out the danger, as Robinson fired a ball across United’s sixyard box. The bookings continued to come, with Evans the latest to be added to Linnington’s collection, for a late tackle on Cunningham. But in the 57th minute, the visitors went ahead. Blackman could only parry Harrop’s shot and BROWNE reacted quickest to score on the rebound. United reacted positively, Fisher cleared Basham’s cross over his own crossbar, before Cunningham denied the Blades from a corner, with a last-ditched header at the back post, with Rudd beaten. Stevens was booked for a foul on Browne, before Brooks was introduced in place of Evans. Preston thought they’d double their lead, when Clarke headed home, only for the assistant referee to flag for offside. Baldock replaced Freeman

and Rudd was at his best twice in a matter of second, tipping over from Brooks, after punching clear Baldock’s inviting cross. Tempers threatened to boil over as United prepared to take an attacking free-kick, then Sharp was booked for watching Huntington go to ground again. With the clocking ticking down, Preston continued to block United shots at goal, with Duffy the latest to be denied. Six minutes of added time were signalled and it was the visitors who were going forward, with Blackman tipping over a shot from Robinson. Despite United’s best efforts, North End held on to end the Blades hopes of a top-six finish. Blades: Blackman, Stevens, Fleck, O’Connell, Basham, Clarke, Sharp, Freeman (Baldock 76), Stearman (Leonard 80), L. Evans (Brooks 66), Duffy. Unused: Moore, Lundstram, Donaldson, Lafferty.

Preston: Rudd, Cunningham, Pearson, Browne, Harrop (Gallagher 66), Johnson (Clarke 66), Fisher, Davies, Huntington, Maguire (Barkhuizen 58), Robinson. Unused: Moult, Maxwell, Earl, Bodin.

Chris Wilder says he was touched by the response of the fans, following the lap of appreciation following Saturday’s loss to Preston North End at Bramall Lane. The management and playing staff received a standing ovation from all four sides of the Lane, despite Alan Browne’s goal ending the Blades hopes of making the play-offs. And Wilder was keen

to acknowledge the supporters postmatch. He remarked: “I felt a little bit overcome on the walk round at the end, because ultimately we’ve not achieved what we wanted to and to finish at home with a loss is bitterly disappointing. “The performance was good, and we left everything out there, we didn’t go out of the back door and I’m

not surprised really.” Wilder added: “But ultimately a little bit of naivety, that lack of quality and inexperience going the other way cost us again and it has done for a little while now. “Preston made some unbelievable blocks and they deserve credit for that, but perhaps they’ve picked our pockets again and got the result.”

FLECK SCOOPS DOUBLE Last Sunday evening saw Bramall Lane host it's traditional Player of the Year event, as the curtain on a rollcoaster of a return season to the Sky Bet Championship begins to come down. Sponsored by long-term commercial partner Whitehornes, the leading independent estate agent in Sheffield and the surrounding areas, a packed Platinum Suite paid tribute to boss Chris

Wilder and his team, whilst enjoying a superb meal and entertainment from Blade Lucy Milburn, semi-finalist of The Voice 2018. Hosted by local broadcaster Paul Walker, who is currently the voice of Football on Five, the following awards were presented. The Player of The Year: John Fleck - sponsored by Whitehornes Estate Agents

The Players' Player of the Year: John Fleck – sponsored by BWF The Goal of The Season: Lee Evans v Middlesbrough – sponsored by Rubber Safety Hygiene The 'David Spencer' Young Player of The Year: David Brooks – sponsored by S&L Electrical The Community Player of The Year: Simon Moore – sponsored by JB Doors There was also a special 'Goal of Career' award presented to Tony Currie, as part of the celebrations to mark 50 years since United's greatest ever player joined the Blades.
