EXCITEMENT BUILDING FOR THE 2018 UEFA U17S CHAMPIONSHIP Excitement is building in the weeks running up to the 2018 UEFA Under17s Championship as the official trophy goes on tour. Children and teachers of Thornhill Primary School had the opportunity to get up close to the trophy as official partners joined the Mayor of Rotherham, Cllr Eve Rose Keenan, and consort Pat Keenan. School fans across Rotherham are being given the chance to view the prestigious silverware before it is presented to the Champions in May, with more than a dozen schools already
visited. England Under17s class of 2017 catapulted themselves onto the global stage in October by lifting the World Cup trophy. And they are hoping to go one further than last season’s Euro campaign which ended with a penalty shoot-out defeat to Spain in the final. England is hosting the UEFA Under17s football championships this year, and Rotherham is one of only five places in the country to have been selected to host the games. The Trophy Tour gives football fans of all ages the
opportunity to share the excitement of the UEFA Champions League. And, in the weeks leading up to the tournament, young fans are being given the chance to spend an unforgettable moment with the trophy. The Mayor of Rotherham Cllr Rose Keenan said: “There is a team of people working with Rotherham United to make this a very special tournament so that the town, and particularly our young people, don’t miss out on this historic opportunity. The Trophy Tour gives football fans of all ages the

opportunity to share the excitement of the UEFA Under-17s Champions League.” Rotherham Council’s Assistant Director of Culture, Sport and Tourism Polly Hamilton said: “A key priority for the Council is extending opportunity for everyone and this will be an amazingly fun event for the community of Rotherham which will put a smile on people’s faces and, at its best, it’s the kind of experience which could change lives, inspire our young people to get active, take up football or aspire to turn their
talent and passion into a profession.” Rotherham United’s Head of Community Jamie Noble added: “The Championship is a fantastic opportunity for children, young people and the wider community to see
the next generation of professional footballers up close and personal, here in our very own New York Stadium.” Rotherham United held onto the trophy until the began on May 4.
Matches taking place at Rotherham’s New York Stadium are: • Tuesday 8 May - 7pm (Bosnia & Herzegovina v Belgium) • Thursday 10 May - 7pm (England v Switzerland)
• Sunday 13 May 2pm (Quarter-final) • Thursday 17 May 1pm (Semi-final) • Sunday 20 May 6pm (Final) Tickets are now on sale from just £4 for adults and £2 for children.

DIVERSITY, DESTINATION AND DIGITAL A panel of industry insiders say that Sheffield is “uniquely placed” to be a new national home for Channel 4 – with a site a grade two listed icon Park Hill one of several potential locations highlighted for the broadcaster to move into. At an event held at the home of the city’s globallyrenowned Doc/Fest today, the Showroom, bid chair Richard Caborn joined senior figures from Warp Films and Tyke Films to reveal details of the bid. A packed audience featuring people from Dice Recordings North, Sheffield Showroom, Kollider and many others also revealed what a Channel 4 national headquarters in Sheffield would mean to them. Key to Sheffield’s unique offer for Channel 4 is its
location, with all of the sites identified less than five minutes walk from Sheffield Midland Station. They include a potential home at the iconic Park Hill development as well as space at the city’s Digital Campus close to the station. Three options have been identified – a refurbishment, new build or so-called hipster hangout. Insiders say the city is almost unrivalled in terms of the combination of journey time from London and between other cities around the UK, especially across the North, a critical element of Channel 4’s requirements. And with the city’s two universities, the UTC and Sheffield College close by as well as digital companies like The Floow, Human and wanDisco in the city’s thriving cultural industries
quarter, bid insiders say they have a “compelling case” for a Channel 4 move. The city is also putting diversity and a network of digital and hi-tech businesses – best demonstrated by the recent announcement of a new £3m Tech hub at Castlegate – at the heart of its bid to Channel 4. The city now supports more than 22,000 digital jobs with a digital GVA of £339m. Richard said: “Sheffield can present a compelling case for Channel 4. The expertise and digital know-how which runs from Kelham to the railway station is unrivalled. Our cultural offerings such as Doc/Fest and Warp are world-renowned. “We can offer a connectivity and closeness to talent and skills that few others can. We have Hallam and
/THEMERCURYNEWSPAPER
the UTC on our doorstep. All the sites identified can be reached on foot within minutes. And we have the spirit and independence that should remind Channel 4 of its own beginnings as a truly ground-breaking broadcasting force. “All these components mean that we are unique in cities in being able to respond to the challenge that Channel 4 has set – to develop a creative campus in the heart of Sheffield that can ready it for the 22nd century.” Mark Herbert from Warp Films added: “Warp Films produced This Is England which was a highly successful film and television series. Sheffield’s strength is in its ability to pull in talent and crew from other places. Geographically, it’s a great location. If you look at the
end credits of films there are usually hundreds of credits – and we want to bring those opportunities to people in Sheffield.” Channel 4 say the new national headquarters must be based in a city with a working population of more than 200,000, travel time to London of less than three hours and a high-level of physical and digital connectivity and infrastructure. Its creative hubs must be based in a city with a working population of 75,000, a four-hour journey time to the capital and links to a well-developed independent television or digital production community.

What do you call a bird with drinking problems? An Owlcoholic My wife was getting annoyed that I kept leaving freezer door open and it kept on defrosting. We’ve since split up, it’s all water under the fridge. I’ve decided to try my hand at writing diet books. I’m told they appeal to a very wide audience. My girlfriend left me because she says I only ever think about football. I’m gutted, we’d been together for nearly three seasons. I stopped a bloke in the street and said, “Can you help me? I’m looking for a rubbish tip.” He replied, “England to win the World Cup.” “I want to win 10 million on the lottery, just like my dad did!” “OMG, your dad won 10 million on the lottery?!” “No, but he always wanted to.” An elderly couple were in church.. The woman whispers to her husband, “I’ve just done a silent fart, what should I do?” He softly replied, “Get a new battery for your hearing aid.” I was telling my doctor earlier how my tennis elbow was really hurting. She said “how many years have you had it for?” I said “15 Love”

Norfolk Heritage Park is set to be taken over by prehistoric predators next month, when the UK’s only outdoor ‘dino-tour’, Jurassic Kingdom, roars into the city. More than 30 lifelike animatronic dinosaurs – including an 18m high, roaring T-Rex and a 16m long Diplodocus – will be on show, snarling their jaws and swaying their tails for audiences of all ages at the family-friendly event, which runs from Saturday 26 May to Sunday 10 June. Naz Kabir, event director at Weli Creative – the organisation behind Jurassic Kingdom, said: “We can’t wait to bring Jurassic Kingdom to Sheffield for the first time this May. “The awe-inspiring dinosaurs give kids and adults alike the chance to experience the sheer size and scale of these fascinating creatures close-up, embarking on a prehistoric adventure that’s both exciting and educational.” Visitors will encounter the dinosaurs as they explore the Jurassic Kingdom through Norfolk Heritage Park, discovering epic, life-sized dinosaur replicas from the Jurassic, Triassic and Cretaceous periods as they go, from T-Rex and Triceratops to flying reptiles like Pterosaurs. Younger dinosaur hunters will also be able to try their hand at digging for bones in an excavation area before learning about how dinosaurs lived, in the Jurassic Kingdom educational marquee. Naz added: “As well as experiencing the thrill of being in the midst of these impressive and incredibly lifelike creatures, visitors can also learn about how dinosaurs lived, millions of years ago. “It’s a unique chance for families and school visitors to enjoy an entertaining and educational day out, and get some truly unforgettable photos along the way, too. Tickets are now on sale from our website – so don’t miss out!” Richard Eyre, Head of City Centre Management, Markets and Major Events said: “It is quite fitting
that one of our oldest parks will be hosting this wonderful event. The park was chosen by the organisers because they saw the layout and the greenery and decided it looked like the natural habitat of dinosaurs. I am sure everyone who comes to this exhibition will agree. “We expect this unique event will be very popular and draw visitors to the area from near and far. It will be quite surreal to see life size dinosaurs in Norfolk Heritage Park this summer!” A variety of food and drink will be available on site, as well as the opportunity for visitors to take home a memento of the day from the Official Merchandise unit. Jurassic Kingdom opens to the public on Saturday 26 May and is open daily from 10am – 6pm until Sunday 10 June, apart from 4, 5 and 6 June. Last entry is at 5pm.

DEALING WITH ESTATES - STEP BY STEP When someone dies, you’ll need to get the legal right to deal with their property, money and possessions (their ‘estate’). 1.Check if there’s a will - this normally states who sorts out the estate. If there’s no will the next of kin can apply. 2.Apply to get a ‘grant of representation’ - this gives you the legal right to access things like the person’s bank account. 3.Value the estate and report it to HMRC. 4.Pay any Inheritance Tax that’s due. 5.Collect the estate’s assets, for example money from the sale of the person’s property. 6.Pay any debts, for example unpaid utilities bills. 7.Distribute the estate - this means giving any property, money or possessions to the people entitled to it (‘beneficiaries’). A grant of representation can sometimes be known as a ‘grant of probate’, ‘letters of administration’ or ‘letters of administration with a will’. When a grant of representation may not be needed You don’t normally need a grant if the estate either: • passes to the surviving spouse or civil partner because it was held in joint names, for example a savings account.
• doesn’t include land, property or shares. You should contact the organisation holding the money, for example the bank or building society. They may ask for proof of death, for example the death certificate after the death has been registered. Each financial institution has its own rules - you may still need to apply for a grant. If the person left a will You can apply for a grant of representation if you’re the ‘executor’ of the will - the person named to deal with the estate. If more than one executor is named in the will, the probate application form and guidance notes explain what to do. You should contact your local Probate Registry if either: • no executor is named in the will • none of the named executors are willing or able to apply The Probate Registry will explain what you need to do. An executor doesn’t necessarily get any of the estate. If the person didn’t leave a will An ‘administrator’ is the person who deals with the estate if there’s no will. You can usually apply for a grant of representation to be the administrator of the estate if you’re the person’s next of
FAST-TRACK YOUR CAREER INTO THE HEALTHCARE PROFESSION …WORK AS A PHLEBOTOMIST!
are often opportunities to progress into other areas, such as working in the hospital path lab or other departments. Promotion is much easier once you are “on the ladder” and have some experience behind you. Many Geopace students are now working as phlebotomists throughout the UK and a few have even chosen to work abroad where there is often a similar shortage and growing demand for this specialised skill. An interesting booklet featuring student’s “Success Stories” is written by the student’s themselves and looks at how they have made the move from wide and varied backgrounds to find themselves now working as phlebotomists. A copy can be downloaded from the Geopace website’s testimonials page. If you like the idea of a challenging career in healthcare and particularly in phlebotomy then this may be the perfect move for you! The comprehensive training course last a full two days and culminates in the award of a nationally recognised and accredited certificate. “We practice taking blood from artificial arms”, says Lauren “and everyone on our course has a lot of fun! We get a great deal of satisfaction later on when we hear from our students that they are working for their local GP surgery or in their local hospital.”
An increasing demand for skilled healthcare professionals has led to a shortage of allied healthcare workers, especially phlebotomists - the skilled healthcare professionals who take your blood. Demand is at an all-time high with hospitals, clinics and GP Surgeries offering a golden opportunity for that “longed for” career change! If you have good people skills and manual dexterity, and like the idea of working in a busy healthcare environment, a phlebotomist job may be just the job for you! Many people enter this profession when they are looking for a career change or a fresh start and they often have no previous qualifications or experience in healthcare. Phlebotomists can work part time (usually mornings) but also may choose to work full time as well as weekends, holidays and bank work. Blood samples are usually collected before mid-day and then analysed in your local hospital’s Path Lab in the afternoon. “We train people from all walks of life and all ages” explains Lauren, Geopace office manager. “We’ve had school leavers, shop assistants, receptionists, beauticians and dental nurses, as well as telesales staff, unemployed and the retired who are looking for a challenge. We also have referrals from JobCentres, who can sometimes fund your course in full” says Lauren. Once you are on the healthcare career ladder there
If you would like to know more about phlebotomy as a career or to book a place on the course visit Geopace Training’s website at www.geopace.com

You’re also not automatically entitled to any of your partner’s estate. The law decides who inherits the estate if there’s no will. Applying for a grant of representation You can apply for a grant of representation yourself or use a solicitor or another person licensed to provide probate services. There are 4 steps to follow. 1. Complete a probate application form. 2. Report the estate’s value. 3. Pay any inheritance tax you owe. Send your application or take to your local office. Sheffield’s Probate Sub-Registry is at the Law Courts, 50 West Bar, Sheffield, S3 8PH. You will need to make an appointment. Telephone 0114 2812596. Or email sheffieldpsrenquiries@hmcts. gsi.gov.uk 4. Swear an oath. There is a fee of £215.00 for applying for Probate. You should get the grant through the post within 10 working days of swearing the oath. If it’s not possible to issue a grant, the Probate Service will explain why in writing. Further details are available on the government website or contact the local office, details above. www.gov.uk/wills-probate-inheritance/ applying-for-a-grant-of-representation Remember, making a will makes dealing with finances, assets, etc., much easier for those you leave behind. It also makes sure your wishes are met.

TURNER’S RASCAL MATE MILES KANE RETURNS TO THE LEADMILL Known for his exhilarating live shows, Miles Kane is back where he belongs, on the road playing 16 unmissable headline shows this summer including a show down at The Leadmill on Wednesday 30th May! ‘It’s been too long since I’ve been on stage” Miles says. ‘I cannot wait to get up and perform a high energy set with a couple of new bangers thrown in! Bring it on!’ Miles is currently in the studio working on a new record, his first solo material since 2013’s acclaimed ‘Don’t Forget Who You Are’. Watch this space! An indie pop veteran by his early twenties, singer/songwriter and young Paul McCartney look-alike Miles Kane has played a key role in the late-noughties alternative scene, both as a member of three bands and a solo artist. Born in 1986 in Merseyside, guitarist Kane formed the Little Flames
with childhood friends at the age of 18, but after Eva Petersen and Mat Gregory left the band due to creative differences, he, along with bassist Joe Edwards and drummer Greg Mighall, continued as a three-piece under the new name of the Rascals. In 2007, with Kane now on vocals, they released their debut album, Rascalize, and appeared in the British hooligan film Away Days, performing an Echo & the Bunnymen cover. After supporting Arctic Monkeys on their U.K. tour, Kane became friends with lead singer Alex Turner, and due to a mutual appreciation of Scott Walker, they decided to record an album together. The Last Shadow Puppets reached number one with their debut, The Age of the Understatement, scored a Top Ten single with the title track, and received a 2008 Mercury
Music Prize nomination. After Turner returned to his day job, Kane decided to leave the Rascals and pursue a solo career. In 2010 he worked with Super Furry Animals’ Gruff Rhys on material influenced by Serge Gainsbourg and John Lennon. His first single, “Inhaler,” was released the same year. In 2011 Kane released his full-length debut, Colour of the Trap, featuring production from both Dan Carey and Dan the Automator; it debuted at 11 on the U.K. charts. Two years later, Kane released the Ian Broudieproduced Don’t Forget Who You Are, which debuted at eight on the U.K. charts.. Mile Kanes The Leadmill Wednesday 30th May Tickets £20 available from www.theleadmill.co.uk
TUNE IN FOR TERRORVISION
LIVE REVIEW TERRORVISION THE PLUG, SHEFFIELD Words & Picture: Roy Goodall
Yorkshire’s produced many of life’s finest products; none more so than quality rock bands. Hailing from Bradford and formed in 1988, Terrorvision, along with The Wildhearts and Reef are collectively touring under the banner of Britrock Must Be Destroyed, with the Bradford lads treating Sheffield to a special pre-tour ‘warm-up’ show. Opening slightly later than expected they kicked off their 25 song set with Come Home Beanie, What The Doctor Ordered, which to me at any rate were unknown though it wasn’t long before Three Wishes and Discotheque Wreak got the masses jumping. And this energy, from both band and fans alike, continued for ninety minutes with frontman and singer Tony Wright showing fitness levels that men half his age couldn’t handle, with drummer Cameron Greenwood also never missing a beat. With bassist Leigh Marklew, guitarist Mark Yates and keyboardist Milton Evans all mainly dressed in white the lads stood out well from the Sheffield stage. This is the point, as many bands dress in black, lighting can be poor and when you’ve splashed out hardearned money on tickets the band is what you’ve come to see. As the songs flowed the energy
continued with Alice and Celebrity Hit List lifting the roof, My House, American TV and many other classic Terrorvision tunes confirming that this band mean business, have learnt their craft and give proper value. There’s very little between song banter plus very little gaps between songs. Just Yorkshire power and Yorkshire passion. Happily, Terrorvision didn’t play Tequila, though they did knock out one of my favourites, Demolition Song, taken from Super Delux which was their last studio album. Closing the night

is important and Terrorvision do it in electrifying style with Josephine, D’Ya Wanna Go Faster, which I currently can’t stop singing, Perseverance, and their big chart hit Oblivion. For my money, and I’ve said this before, Terrorvision are arguably one of the best live acts Britain has ever produced and if your band is currently on the pub circuit with aspirations to go higher, checking out the Bradford lads should be part of your homework. This will heighten your career no end.

Schools across South Yorkshire will have the chance to show off their Shakespeare skills in a new competition arranged by Sheffield Theatres, which is inviting children from the region to showcase their creative and
performance talents. The competition aims to engage children aged eight upwards in Shakespeare’s much loved comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, by asking them to explore the mechanicals amateur dramatics scene from
the play, and devise their own piece for video submission to Sheffield Theatres. The winning school will win tickets for their class and accompanying teachers to see the show when it plays in the Crucible from Thursday 27 September – Saturday 20 October. Robert Hastie, director of the show, said: ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a play all about music, magic and make-believe, and at the end of the show there’s a moment where all the characters come together and put on their own play to celebrate a big wedding. ‘Your version of this classic scene can be as imaginative as you’d like; you can set it on the moon, you can all dress as hippos or you could tell the whole
story with mime! We want you to engage your imaginations, and we can’t wait to see what you come up with.’ The deadline for entries is Monday 18 June at 5pm. For all information on how to get your class involved, and for all terms and conditions, please visit https:// www.sheffieldtheatres. co.uk/news/schoolsvideo-competition-amidsummer-nightsdream A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be in the Crucible from Thursday 27 September – Saturday 20 October 2018. Tickets can be purchased from Sheffield Theatres’ Box Office in-person, by phone on 0114 249 6000 or online at sheffieldtheatres. co.uk, and are priced from £15.00. A concert in aid of the above charity will be held at the Wheatley Working Men’s Club on Saturday, 12 May 2018. I would like to thank all those who have given their time and expertise in organising this event. There have been a number of other events organised by numerous pubs and clubs and I wish to thank them all for their efforts. The Firefly Cancer Awareness Support Group do magnificent work in organising transport to and from treatment centres, and I am profoundly grateful for the (hopefully) life saving treatment their service has made possible for me personally. Also, I would like to say a special thank you to the volunteer drivers of Firefly who give their time so generously. If any other pubs or clubs wish to organise a similar charity event on behalf of the Firefly Cancer Awareness Support Group, please do not hesitate to contact me for any assistance I can give. Firefly can be contacted on 07738390541 C.Bennett Concert Secretary Wheatley Working Men’s Club 01302 360984 38 Wentworth Road Doncaster 01302 324166 or 07985482428

I fancied something different this week, so ventured to a local day ticket water less than an hour from home, where catfish were my target… Home Farm Fisheries in Alsager have a couple of pools, but it was the specimen lake which piqued my interest having noted a few cats on the bank during the preceding week or so, and as I haven’t caught one for a while, I thought I’d try my luck, and booked my peg for the following day. I arrived bright and early, returning to the fishery for the first time in a few years, and quickly remembered that it was from Home Farm I caught my first ever cat, a slippery customer of 17lb 14oz, whilst fishing for carp. From that day on, I’ve always liked to see a catfish banked, as I think they are one of the most impressive of all UK freshwater species, and I couldn’t wait to get the rods in and try for my first of the season. I was booked on ‘High Point’ peg, giving access to plenty of open water, and the margins of an island to my right, so quickly barrowed my kit around and watched the water to see if I could spot any fish. The lake is home to a huge head of carp in addition to the cats, but it was the moggies I really sought, though in the early morning calm, I couldn’t see anything which gave them away. I was also keen to use the newest bait from the Spotted Fin stable, Smokey Jack. It’s a smoked tuna mix and combined with matching glug and pellets, I figured that the fishy stink might attract a customer. I mixed up a small amount of tuna stick mix, added some 2mm Smokey Jack pellets, and splashed a glug of the same food additive into lake water before combining the lot to produce a fishy feast fit for catfish! On the hook, Smokey Jack boilies wrapped in halibut paste, and on the other rod, a big lump of meat, before the hook links were pulled through a pva bag of my fishy mix, the hooks pulled into the pva to protect the points, and both were lobbed out and then surrounded with a few scattered boilies; perfect! Other anglers hadn’t caught overnight, and I noted a couple of unusual floats which turned out to be holding leeches in the upper layers ready for a strike from below. I’ve never used leeches, I’ve had them crawl up my legs in Belize, but never used them as bait, so was intrigued to find out more from the angler who was using them. I know they are probably the best catfish bait going, but I always considered them prohibitively expensive so stick to cheaper options. My compatriot explained that leeches are supplied in a bio-gel, that they are indeed hardy little suckers, and can even regenerate to be used again if you are careful, but confirmed my suspicions that at £7.50 for ten, they might not be a viable option for many anglers. As we chatted, I noticed a swirl over my bait which stirred up the shallow water, and a few seconds later, my reel started to ship line at an alarming rate as the meat was picked up! The rod tip arched around as line continued to rip off the spool, and I clamped my hand on it to stop line disappearing and struck upwards expecting solid resistance. There was resistance, but unfortunately, not as solid as I’d hoped, as a small carp, perhaps of 5lb, immediately surfaced and spat the hook at me. I couldn’t believe that such a small fish had steamed off on such a startling run, and nor could I believe it had actually got the bait in it’s mouth! Not the start I wanted… With the bait recast, I sat back to wait, and enjoy my first brew of the day as the sun came up, and the lake started to come to life. It’s a well established lake, with some very friendly robins who are bold enough to sit on your knee as they await titbits, and fantastic grey herons who hunt at close quarters which are always a pleasure to see. Slam! The bobbin shot up towards the blank

as something hit the boilie hook bait, and the alarm receiver went mad in my pocket! Once again, I hit the run immediately, expecting to contact something solid, but this time struck into thin air as whatever picked up the bait quickly dropped it. My rigs were very simple; a short length of leadcore (think Korda bag leaders) with a two ounce lead stripped of its inner sleeve running freely to a bead protected swivel, then a quick link, terminating in a coated braid with a few inches peeled off to aid the movement of the hook. The lead was so free running that I pinched on a pva nugget behind it to hold it in place during the cast! Despite their size, catfish can be incredibly shy biting, so I try and remove as much resistance as I can. Just ten minutes later, another screaming take also saw no result. Three runs, no fish. I didn’t think I was doing much wrong, the other anglers hadn’t had so much as a sniff of a fish either, so at least I was getting some interest, but I hadn’t connected with anything. I’d been there for about three hours at this point, and noted more activity in the swim, so remained hopeful. I remounted a pva stick on both rods and put them back out into the baited zone. The angler behind me then also missed a run, but my swim was quiet once more, and stayed that way all day aside from a couple of small lifts which I took to be bream picking up and releasing the heavy baits. It began to rain. After a glorious day, the first spots had me wondering whether I could pack up fast enough to avoid a soaking, but it soon became a proper shower. I sat huddled under the brolly as I contemplated going home to watch Emmerdale (I know, life on the edge!) when the new lake owner, Steve, stuck his head under the brolly and informed me that I was entering the ‘bite hour’ and should give a few more minutes before departing. I always take such advice kindly as the word on the bank is usually good, but it didn’t stop me clearing a few items into the bag, dropping the umbrella, and generally tidying up as I waited for one of the elusive catfish… With almost everything packed up, and just my rods and unhooking gear remaining, the receiver buzzed in my pocket. I glanced at the bobbins to see the right hand line pull tight, and the rod tip quiver. This rod held the huge chunk of meat. To add more attraction, I’d poured a small amount of food additive over the meat and left it to go sticky in the sun before rolling it in my stick mix. Had it worked? The bobbin dropped slightly, then lifted until the line went tight, but moved no further; was a cat being clever? I hit it anyway… Boom! An explosion of spray and mud, and the cat took off on a pounding run across the lake as I spun the clutch back in to take the strain. My rod arched over pleasingly, and I quickly made some gains before the cat began to plod from side to side in front of me as a crowd gathered. It was the only positive cat action between us, and of course, everyone wants to know exactly what is lurking in the depths, so I was praying I wouldn’t lose it! It eventually started to give up, slipping across the surface to the waiting net, but then spotted the waiting mesh, and surged off again! It wasn’t a big fish, but even a small cat usually gives an excellent account of itself, and this one was no different. A few minutes later, the cat was netted by Steve, and gently lifted to the waiting mats. I’m always struck by the beautiful mottled marbling of the catfish, no two are ever the same, and the pale grey shape laid serenely in the bottom of the cradle as I unhooked it. Quickly hoisted for a photograph, it was weighed at 17lb 12oz, (not the monster I’d hoped for, but still pleasing) and gently returned, swimming away back into the murk to cap a successful first cat foray of the year. I’m after bigger fish if I’m honest, and the venue holds them to almost 70lb, so despite catching the only fish of the day, I’ll certainly be back for more, but next week, Australia beckons, and my column will be written from there, so who knows what I’ll be catching! Tight lines!

NICE WAY TO END REGULAR SEASON WARNE Millers Manager Paul Warne saw his side end the regular season on a high after defeating Blackpool 1-0 at the AESSEAL New York Stadium. “I think the heat took a bit out of both teams,” said Warne. “I thought we were good, first-half, without creating anything clearcut. We had a bit of joy with Willo (Ryan Williams) down the left-hand side especially. I was content with what I saw, I thought our performance was okay. “I made some changes pretty early in the second-half to save and to freshen up. They
had a good 15-minute spell where their play probably deserved a goal. But I thought Marek was outstanding and, in fairness, he is paid to keep it out of the net. I thought he did really well and, on another day, they might have scored. “I was expecting a really good side who have won four out of five and battered Shrewsbury. So I knew what sort of game it was going to be. If we’d have got a second goal we might have been a bit calmer, but at 1-0 they were still throwing everything at it. Apart from a couple of incidents, I didn’t know if they were going to score, but it would have been nice if we’d have got that second goal.” With little in the game to separate the two sides, it took another sweet effort from Will Vaulks to win the points for Warne’s men. “It’d be nice if he’d done a different celebration, it’s getting a bit tiresome, to be honest!” joked Warne. “It’s nice for him to get a goal. It’s a pity Lavs (Caolan Lavery) didn’t get one when he came on for his effort, because I felt he deserved a goal. It’s just a nice way to finish the season. “There are no issues at all, which is lucky. At one stage I was thinking of taking Icky (Michael Ihiekwe) off because he was on a booking. That was my only issue or concern today. There were no injuries and nobody said anything to me, so we’re all good.”

STRACHAN PRAISES PLAYERS’ COMMITMENT Assistant manager Gavin Strachan praised the players’ commitment in Rovers’ narrow loss to Wigan Athletic on Saturday. Will Grigg’s second-half goal was enough to give the Latics all three points, which handed them the Sky Bet League One title, and Strachan hoped his side had earned Wigan’s respect for their battling display. “The players did the things the manager wanted and we ran a really good team very close, we made them work hard for their victory and it was a counterattack goal that did us in the end,” he said. “Congratulations to Wigan on winning the title, they thoroughly deserved it, and I hope we earned their

COUNTY SENIOR FOOTBALL with Michael Clarke
The County Senior headed into May with the match schedule beginning to calm down after an intense period throughout April. League Semi-Final After a number of postponements and rearrangements the second League Cup Semi-Final took place on Thursday, which was originally the date set for the final. We had a shock on our hands as well. Sheffield Medics of Division One booked their place in the final with a 2-0 victory over Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves of the Premier Division at the Memorial Ground. The Medics sit currently in mid-table in Division One, but will be hoping for another scalp when they take on Division One leaders Swinton Athletic also at the Memorial Ground, Penistone on Tuesday 8th May. Swinton booked their place in the final a month ago, with a 6-3 (AET) victory over Grimethorpe Sports. Premier Division The aforementioned Swinton Athletic warmedup for the League Cup final, by taking control of the Premier Division title race this week. They recorded three victories across the week. They started on Monday night with a 1-0 home win over Denaby United. On Wednesday they comfortable beat North Gawber Colliery 5-0, before rounding out an excellent week with a 3-0 away win over Grimethorpe Sports. Swinton have a four point lead with four games remaining. Second placed Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves began their week very well, with a 11-0 win over Millmoor Juniors on Monday night. That’s where their fun ended though, as they lost in the League Cup Semi-Final and then fell 4-3 at home to fourth placed Frecheville. Stocksbridge now have their work cut out to chase Swinton, who have played two games less.
Jubilee Sports had a very good week, with backto-back wins. Goals from Daniel Barnsley (2), Charlie Hobson, Craig Senior and Jack Shaw gave them an impressive 5-0 win over second bottom Houghton Main on Monday night. They then travelled again to a Barnsley club on Friday night, as they sealed a 2-0 away win over Wombwell Main to climb into sixth position in the table. Division One The race for second place in Division One still has plenty of heat. Midweek second placed Hepworth United hosted High Green Villa at Far Lane. The result proved inconclusive, as the pair shared the spoils after a 2-2 draw. Hepworth then went on to lose on Saturday 1-0 at home to Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915. Hepworth have two games remaining, with a two point lead over their rivals. High Green have played a game fewer. Kiveton Park ended their season with a confirmed fourth placed finish. They drew 2-2 on Saturday at Silkstone United on Wednesday night. Caribbean Sports registered their third straight victory on Monday night, with a 3-0 home win over AFC Dronfield. The win was enough to lift Caribbean out of the bottom three. Division Two Hat-tricks from Ryan Hicks and Jordan Thomas helped fourth placed Manor Hotel to a 8-1 home win over Maltby Main Reserves on Wednesday evening. It was Manor Hotel’s second game of the week, after a 1-1 draw with North Gawber Colliery Reserves on Monday. Goals from Jordan Leverett (3), Nathan Walsh, Scott Jones and Daniel Morton gave Swinton Athletic Reserves a 6-0 home win over bottom side Thurcroft Miners Institute on Wednesday. Also on Wednesday night, mid-table Wombwell Main Development made it three straight victories with a 4-1 home win against Working Wonders.

BLADES SIGN OFF SEASON BOSS DELIGHTED WITH WITH VICTORY AT BRISTOL FINAL DAY SUCCESS Three impressive first half goals paved the way for United’s victory and a 10th place finish in the Sky Bet Championship. Leon Clarke, Billy Sharp and Kieron Freeman scored the goals to put the Blades 3-0 up at the break. City, expectedly, hit back in the second half but United held on to finish the campaign with a victory. Moore and Leonard started at Bristol City on Sunday lunchtime. Duffy dropped to the bench and loanees Blackman and Wilson returned to their respective clubs early, Chris Wilder revealed. It was hot and bright at kick-off and the Blades were certainly the quicker into their stride. Home goalkeeper Fielding had to claw away an early Leonard corner before he was pulling the ball out of the back of the net. Just eight minutes had gone when CLARKE picked up the ball 25 yards out and curled beyond Fielding’s left-arm. It was his 19th of the campaign. United were clearly the front foot team without overly testing Fielding and the home side’s only chance of the opening half hour saw the ball drop over Basham for Reid but Moore was quickly off his line to deal with the danger. City’s attacking momentum was stifled, somewhat, by having to defend. The
home back line could do little about two volleys inside five minutes, though, that trebled the lead. Firstly, on 29 minutes, Fleck teased a number of red shirts before dropping a pass over Kelly’s head for SHARP to hammer past Fielding, into the roof of the net. The third goal, however, was arguably better. Clarke’s deep cross saw Fielding caught in two minds to collect or stay at home and that allowed FREEMAN to arrive at the back post and slam first time into the corner of the net. Before the break Paterson headed over Bryan’s cross and Reid volleyed wide, but the home side were still trying to contain the Blades. Clarke charged down Kelly’s clearance but Flint blocked the subsequent shot and Evans curled over the crossbar. Unsurprisingly, the home side began the second half with vigour but clear chances did not materialise until the hour when FLINT’s header from a corner beat a number of bodies, including Moore, to nestle in the net. It gave the home side momentum and they attempted to pepper the Blades box at every opportunity with set-pieces and Magnusson’s long throw. A second City goal arrived on 75 minutes following a Stearman
foul. BRYAN’s leftfoot curler beat the wall and found the top corner. A minute later Diedhiou flicked on and Reid’s shot was turned away by Moore whilst towering defender Flint was added to the City front line at every opportunity late on. In the final ten minutes, the only chance of note saw substitute Brooks just fail to get on the end of Clarke’s low cross, whilst five minutes of added time saw Moore twice leave his line to relieve his defence of pressure. The final whistle confirmed the Blades had won on the first and last days of the return to the Championship, whilst the excitement in between resulted in a respectable finish.
Bristol City: Fielding, Bryan, Flint, Smith, Brownhill, Diedhiou, Reid, Eliasson (O’Dowda 56), Paterson (Magnusson 45), Pack, Kelly (Semenyo 79). Unused: Taylor, Walsh, Steele, Bakinson. Blades: Moore, Stevens, Fleck, O’Connell, Basham, Clarke, Sharp (Brooks 79), Leonard (Lundstram 58), Freeman (Baldock 63), Stearman, L. Evans. Unused: Duffy, Lafferty, Eastwood, C. Evans.
The Blades boss was pleased to end the season with a win, and a top ten finish. Chris Wilder was delighted to see his side sign off the 2017/18 campaign with an impressive victory at Bristol City. Speaking after witnessing a clinical first-half display, backed up with a resolute second-half showing, the Blades boss heaped praise on his players. He commented: “I thought we were outstanding in the first-half and dominated and even in the second-half we defended when we had to, because it’s never easy at Ashton Gate. “They’ve got a great
home record and they were always going to stick it on us late on, but in both halves we were fantastic “The goals we scored, the control we had on the game was right up there with our best performances away from home this season and that pleases me.” And Wilder dedicated the last day success to United’s travelling supporters, with nearly 2,000 making the long trip to Bristol. He added: “All the goals were top quality, the ball from Flecky to Sharpy and his finish, Leon’s effort from distance and Kieron’s controlled volley, all of them were excellent both individually and

“Marcus has progressed very well during his first season in full-time football. “He has worked very hard with Matt Duke, our Academy goalkeeping coach and both deserve credit, for this fully deserved call-up. “Experiencing tournament football will be fantastic for his development, especially with England looking to defend their title on home soil.”

OWLS FINISH WITH A FLOURISH Jos Luhukay poured the praise on his players following the emphatic 5-1 victory over Norwich as the Owls signed off the season in style. The Canaries were overwhelmed at Hillsborough as an Atdhe Nuhiu hattrick and goals from Fernando Forestieri and Frederico Venancio did the damage. Luhukay said: “I am proud of the players for that performance. I say there is always something to play for in football and we
showed that today. “We played with power and good movement and put our chances away. “I am very pleased for Atdhe and his goals are all different. His first goal was a very good header then he was in the right place to score his second from close range and then the penalty at the end.” Luhukay revelled in the carnival atmosphere at Hillsborough as his side tore Norwich apart, offering plenty of promise for the
2018/19 campaign. He added: “We have six wins from nine games and this is very promising for next
season. This is the kind of form we must show if we are to challenge. “It will not be easy,
of course, because all the teams in the Championship want the same thing. “We will win games, we will lose
