DONCASTER BEER FESTIVAL HEADS TO THE DOME! More than 100 real ales and traditional ciders will be on offer, along with live music and food at the 27th Doncaster Beer Festival. The Doncaster and District Campaign for Real Ale, is staging the three day festival which will take place from Thursday June 7 to Saturday June 9 2018 at the Dome. This year’s event, which is being held in association with Doncaster Conferences, Catering and Events, will be bigger and better than ever before. The entire sports hall has been taken over to ensure there’s plenty of room
for the bars, food stalls and stage. Ian Jones, Chairman of Doncaster and District CAMRA said: “We are looking forward to serving real ale in a real glass at this year’s festival and all of our beers will be served at the correct temperature, thanks to newly obtained chilling equipment. “There will be new beers from new breweries for our guests to sample and also some new brews from a few ‘old favourites’. Live music will feature on the Friday and Saturday, with the Groom Lake Fugitives kicking things off on
Friday night, followed by the Smoking Beagles performing an ‘early slot’ on Saturday evening.” The Continental Bottle Beer Bar will feature beers from: Belgium, Holland, Germany, Czech Republic, Norway and USA, including Trappist, Lambic, Wheat Beer, Fruit Beer and Pilsner styles. Festival Ales will include ‘Doncastaire Dome IPA’ brewed specially for the event by staff from the Dome using the brewing facilities of Aire Heads Brewery, Goole. Chris Hone from Doncaster Conferences, Catering
and Events, said: “We are looking forward to welcoming beer lovers to this great three day festival at The Dome and will no doubt attract lots of people to the town. “The following for real ales and ciders just keeps on growing and we look forward to showcasing lots of varieties throughout the event.” The event is free for CAMRA members when they show their membership card. Tickets for the event for non-members can be bought on the door at the festival costing £2 per session, apart from Friday evening which costs £3. A
Festival Glass will be needed at all sessions costing £3 but this can be reused if attending more than one session. Guests who join CAMRA at the Festival will receive all the usual benefits plus some Festival Specials, free admission and a free pint. The event starts on Thursday June 7 and runs from 5pm until 11pm and then Friday June 8 runs from 11am until 11pm and Saturday 9 June runs from 11am until 11pm. Further details can be found on the beer festival website: doncasterbeerfestival. org.uk Facebook or Twitter.

FOOD FESTIVAL SET TO BE THE MOST DELICIOUS YET! The programme of traders and activities for this year’s Sheffield Food Festival has now been announced and it’s HUGE! The event returns to the city centre for its eighth year on the Spring Bank Holiday weekend, with markets open from 10am - 6pm on Saturday 26, Sunday 27 and Monday 28 May. The Artisan Market at Sheffield Food Festival features food producers and businesses from around Sheffield and further afield, bringing a range of preserves, oils, cakes, chilli sauces, cookery books, craft beers, gins, pies and
loads more for attendees to take home and enjoy. The Artisan Market now spreads from the Peace Gardens, along Town Hall Square and onto Fargate, with over 50 wonderful stalls for you to browse and shop. Street food was so popular at last year’s event that many of the traders sold out several times over, so this year the Street Food Market has been extended, with 35 different companies to choose from. The Theatre Kitchen programme is looking really exciting with plenty of the festival’s favourite chefs returning to share more secrets of
the trade and showcase great local produce. Each day kicks off with a ‘Ready Steady Cook!’ session with local chefs and food charities battling it out with mystery ingredients - come and find out about the work of SAGE Greenfingers (Saturday), Foodcycle Sheffield (Sunday) or The Food Bank Choir (Monday). The big hit from last year’s food festival was undeniably the new Eats, Treats & Beats Festival Village at the top of Fargate. This is a stylish stretch tent bar surrounded by top notch street food, which stays open into the evening for
that ‘night market’ vibe. This year, the Village will open for an extra day, with soft opening on Thurs 24th (bar only) and everything in full swing from 11am on Friday 25th May. This year the festival is working with Sentinel Brewing Co and Stancill Brewery, so the bar features some excellent local beers alongside the usual bar range, plus Mr D’Arcys Drink Emporium will be open throughout serving gin, prosecco and cocktails. Orchard Square will turn into a Pop Up Tea Room for the weekend with great cakes and bakes, outdoor seating and
table service from the local retailers so you can simply relax and enjoy your cuppa along with some delicious, locally made, indulgent treats The ever popular Fountain Bar returns to the Peace Gardens, offering a selection of the city’s most popular ales from an enviable range of local independent breweries, as well as some from further afield. Visit the Sheffield Food Festival website www. sheffieldfoodfestival. co.uk or pick up the Sheffield Food Festival Magazine for full details, trader listings, map and timings.

My wife has packed her bags and gone!! Just because of my fetish with touching pasta. I’m feeling cannelloni right now. Just had some people at my door trying to convince me that brown bread was better than white bread. They were Hovis witnesses. Just won my first cage fight! The parrot didn’t know what hit it! I had a goal to two lose stone by the end of the year. Just three stone to go! Due to a factory error, there’s a faulty batch of sun cream in the shops. That’s going to cause a lot of red faces. My daughter keeps giving everyone in the house shocks from static electricity. I’ve grounded her. My wife woke up with a huge smile on her face this morning. I love felt tips. Because the Earth is round, running away from something is also running towards it from really far away. My friend just asked me, “If you became invisible, what would you do first?” I said, “I’d go to Paris, find a performing street mime and beat the hell out of him; the round of applause he’d get would be astounding.”
My mate used liquorice as bait when he went fishing. He caught all sorts!

HOW TO HANDLE A BRIDESMAID-ZILLA…
So many brides have problems in their bridal party. It can be a nightmare having a bad bridesmaid, but there are solutions to your party problems! So, one of the biggest bridesmaid problems is that they hate the dress they’re wearing. It’s tempting to go crazy at them – after all, the bridesmaid’s main role is to wear the dress they’re given – but put yourself in their shoes for a second. Sit down and talk with them about it; is it the colour? The fit? If you find out what she dislikes, you may be able to change it for her. If you’re not willing to move on your decision, or she hates everything about the dress, ask her politely that she has to wear what is told; if you change all of the dresses, someone else may not like the new style. Another problem is bridesmaids who just don’t respond to messages and put minimal effort into planning with you. The first thing you need to do is think about the last time you asked how she was. If you can’t remember, make sure to talk to her about her. Weddings can consume you sometimes and you have to remember they may not be as excited as you are. If she just refuses to talk to you, call her and meet up for coffee. Explain how you feel, and see why she’s not responding. Tell her you need her and her input. And if that doesn’t work or she kicks off about her duties, you need someone else to fill her place; she doesn’t want to be a bridesmaid so don’t force her. On the flipside, if you have a control freak bridesmaid, who is wedding-mad but overly enthusiastic with her input, give her specific tasks to do. Make sure she’s always busy and always has something to do. That will keep her happy and stop her from providing her opinions.

HEALTH & WELLBEING - NEVER TOO LATE! It’s never too late to think about adopting a healthier lifestyle. That doesn’t mean you suddenly have to change your diet and start spending every day at the gym. Just a few small changes can make a big difference – helping you to feel better, have more energy and sleep more soundly. Muscle-strengthening activities Staying active isn’t just about raising your heart rate. It’s important to keep your strength up too. The Government recommends that you build up to two sessions of muscle-strengthening activity a week. This year sees High Green Musical Theatre Group (HGMTG), who are based at the EPPiC Theatre in Ecclesfield, celebrate 70 years of entertaining and bringing joy to the people of Sheffield. To commemorate this fantastic achievement and milestone event they are performing a musical extravaganza in June, bringing together indelible songs from
some of their previous productions. The theatre group consists of committed and talented theatre enthusiasts who put on several shows for the community every year, and in next month’s show they are going to be supported by past members who have re-joined the cast for this special occassion. One of returning performers is Harvey Kay, aged 93, who is
a founding member of the group and will be proudly treading the boards alongside his son and granddaughter, performing classic songs from the musicals of years gone by. This week, I fully intended to have one last carp session before jumping on an aeroplane to travel across to the other side of the world, but wouldn’t you know it, a short spell of hot weather, and love takes over! On most of the waters I fish, the carp are either fully engaged in spawning, or very close to it, so I’ll have to wait as I don’t believe in fishing for them at this time. Hopefully, by the time II get back, it will all be over and done with, and I can get the boilies out to try and bag a whacker! In light of events, and with extremely limited time, I grabbed the lure rod, and set off for a wander up the canal… A stretch of water that I love, and fish regularly, has recently been taken over by a club… bad news. Previously, it was free to fish (subject to waterways wanderer permit which covers all unmanaged canals where fishing is permissible, but unadopted) and I enjoyed many hours flicking lures around in pursuit of perch and pike. It’s not all bad news though, as the club which has taken it on, well, I’m already a member! Excellent! I was keen to enjoy an hour in the sunshine, so took my new Sonik Magna dropshot rod, a handful of tiny lures, and marched across the field to the water’s edge to try and catch something worth photographing. Although marketed as a dropshot rod, it’s obviously easy to rig up a light jighead too, and as my jig was firmly nestled in the retaining eye after my last session, I started off by twitching a tiny shad along the nearside of the canal in likely spots beneath a bridge, and in the shadow of overhanging trees. Not a tap. Not a flicker of interest… I spent the best part of twenty minutes slowly flicking the lure up in the water and allowing it settle before I felt a tentative pluck, and although I left the bait for a second or two, nothing happened, so decided to change to dropshot… A size 10 Fox dropshot hook was quickly threaded up the line and secured, with a Dinsmores bulb weight added below, and I selected my first lure. I have a dwindling stock of tiny orange imitation fish, in fact after desperately searching through my tackle bag, I found I was down to my last one! The water was coloured, the result of a couple of narrowboats passing through, and I think an orange lure stands out really well in murky water, although many other anglers will also have their favourites, so I carefully slid it around the point of the hook, and swung it out to the base of the nearside shelf. As I delicately tapped my rod butt to impart movement, I noted a scattering of fry to my right as a predator struck from below; a good sign. I moved position, dropping the lure in the midst of the expanding ripples, and continued to watch the braid hoping for a quick strike. It wasn’t to be… I stayed for around fifteen minutes, constantly moving the lure, but couldn’t entice a bite. I tried changing the

lure, and the depth at which it ‘swam’, but to no avail. I had also spotted carp rooting up the reeds, and was confident that I wouldn’t hook one using a lure, so opted to cross the bridge, and move to the other side of the waterway to search for a predator. Pushing carefully through the undergrowth, I spied fish moving along the edge of the weedy margin so plinked my lure in carefully and left it flutter in the shallow water. I lost a perch. A small fish, but at least it was interest, so I spent the next five minutes carefully lowering the orange tempter between reed stems and overhanging twigs trying to find a ‘nest’ of perch. As I moved the lure towards me I hooked the bottom… A fraction of a second trying to release the lure, and both the pike and I realised what had happened! The predator had obviously turned on the lure, and sat there chewing, and when I moved it, the hook point pricked in, and the pike exploded out of the shallows and steamed out into the canal! Yes! I fish dropshot with 6lb braid tied to a 5lb fluorocarbon leader, so my clutch was already set ‘just in case’. The reel spun as the braid unwound, and the Magna rod took on a very worrying curve as the pike fought to free the hook. I shouldn’t have been concerned though; the rod took the strain beautifully, and within a minute or so, the pike was back in the shallows below my feet and ready for the net, the orange lure visible right at the tip of the jaw! Safely netted, it was swiftly unhooked, photographed, and rested in the water before I released my hold on its tail. It wasn’t a monster, perhaps weighing around 7lb, but on ultralight gear, and at close quarters, it provided superb sport, and an thrilling tussle! By now, the sun was high in a cloudless sky, and most of the predatory activity stopped, so it was time to move down to an area where a small stream enters the canal, hoping that oxygenated water would provide a haven for fish in an otherwise featureless stretch of water. As soon as my lead hit the water, fish scattered away, a positive sign, and I started to work it back towards the bank. Within a few seconds, I hit a lump of a perch which almost as quickly threw the hook, then missed another bite, but quickly added a second, much smaller pike to the tally. As the morning passed, the boat traffic increased to the point where I considered it sensible to pack up and go home. A couple of hours in the sun, a great scrap with a feisty pike, and a little bit of exploration made for a good session. Tomorrow, I’m on a plane to Australia, and yes, I’ve packed a rod… you just never know if an opportunity will present itself, so I’m not taking any risks! I have a feeling the fish may be bigger, but I’m sure it will be just as much fun! I’ll let you know… tight lines!

BIG SUMMER AHEAD CONFIDENCE, FOR BANNAN TRUST AND Follow Your Local Team Every Week In The Mercury EXCITING TIMES AHEAD FOR NUHIU WARNE
HAPPY AS MILLERS GO BACK LEVEL
Depsite the concession of a last-gasp equaliser, Millers boss Paul Warne was quick to praise the efforts of his side following their hard-fought draw with Scunthorpe United in the League One play-off semi-final first leg at Glanford Park. Goals from Jon Taylor and sub Joe Newell looked to have earned the Millers victory in North Lincolnshire but a Michael Ihiekwe own goal and sub Cameron McGeehan’s late bundled effort keeps the tie on a knife edge going into Wednesday night’s second leg at the AESSEAL New York Stadium. Speaking to the assembled press corps afterwards, Warne shrugged off the disappointment of his side being pegged back twice by Nick Daws’ men. “I’m really pleased with the players. I asked them not to lose and they haven’t,” Warne enthused. “I thought it was a pretty even first half and the best bit of play was our goal. It was an edgy game as they usually are and I’m a bit disappointed with their first goal. When it was two-one, I thought we may have got another one as we had control of the game. It’s a pity we did not stop the second goal going in. “If you’d have given me a draw before the game, I’d have been happy with that. I’m generally pretty pleased with the lads. I’ll put a smile back on their
faces as some of them were disappointed. We will pick them up and go again on Wednesday. “To come away from here, two-one up would have been a great result but I can’t be greedy. Scunny played well and are a really good side so to come here and match them on their home turf is good for us and we can take credit for that. Hopefully, we can win on Wednesday night. I don’t want to tempt fate but historically, we are generally good under the lights at the New York,” The Millers boss had the midas touch with his substitutions as Newell scored with his first touch and Warne revealed afterwards that Newell was unlikely not to start the game while he had consoling words for centre-half Ihiekwe, who was unlucky to put the ball into his own net, as he attempted to divert Duane Holmes’ shot to safety, in the first half. “Newell’s goal was his first touch. If you want it to fall to anyone with a bit of quality then it would be him,” Warne added. “Joe was unlucky not to play. He came on and had an impact which must have been amazing for him. “In fairness to Michael, he was trying to clear it. I’ve watched it back and it looks like it was going wide, but he was trying to do the right thing and I’ll not criticise him for that, as he was excellent today. It’s just bobbled off his shin.”

BLADES RETAINED LIST ANNOUNCED
LA PLATA S.C.
United’s planning for the 2018/19 campaign is underway. As is traditional at this time of the year, the retained/ released lists will shortly be submitted to the EFL. It shows Clayton Donaldson will be released following a short spell with the club. The striker scored five goals, including two on his debut, in 26 league appearances since signing from Birmingham City. Chris Hussey, who spent the duration of the 2017/18 season on-loan at Swindon Town, having made just 11 appearances for the Blades in League One, will leave the club. In addition, the following players, who remain under contract, will be made available for transfer or loan: George Long, Ben Heneghan, Louis Reed, Nathan Thomas, Samir Carruthers, Caolan Lavery and James Hanson.
BLAIR: ROVERS FOUNDATIONS ARE STRONG Matty Blair believes Rovers have the foundations for a successful 2018/19 season - but is ready for a much-needed break after the most stressful year of his life before throwing himself into pre-season. Rovers finished 15th in Sky Bet League One and enjoyed a run to the third round of the Carabao Cup. With a young squad, Blair feels there is plenty of room for progress. He said: “It has been a solid season after promotion, but we feel as a group of players that we should be higher than we are - and that can only be positive for next season. “The foundations are there to have a really good season, it can be really exciting for us as a club.” Blair made 46 appearances across all competitions in the 2017/18 campaign, a difficult year which included the loss of his brother to cancer in the summer. He was given some time off earlier in the campaign while he processed the loss, but has since been an ever-present. Now he is relishing a few weeks away

Atdhe Nuhiu has explained how trust and confidence has enabled the big striker to finish the season with a flourish. The Kosovo international may not always have been a regular on the teamsheet but the 28-year-old never once doubted his own abilities. In fact, quite the opposite. And under the guidance of Jos Luhukay, Nuhiu has risen to the fore, scored nine goals in the final eight games, including a goal of the season contender against Preston and a hat-trick against Norwich. “Confidence plays a big part,” Nuhiu said. “The manager trusts me and that makes me confident and as a result the goals came and not just the goals but the results. “When you have the trust and confidence, you also do types of things that are not expected of you. “The manager likes to work with me, I like to work with him and that played a big part in it. “My priority was to stay here, the manager wanted that, the club wanted that so for me there was no doubt.” Aiming to carry that form into the new season, Atdhe now looks ahead to the future at Hillsborough with much optimism. Without doubt, the S6 landscape has shifted for the towering frontman, who is excited for what is to come during this next phase of his Wednesday career. He continued: “I can’t wait for the next season to start. “I’m five years here already and it’s nice to be at a club where people show loyalty and everybody knows what the club means to me. “From my side, I said it in the past, Sheffield Wednesday were the club who opened the door for me to come to England. “I am very pleased for that. There is a new system, new idea behind all of this and it’s exciting times ahead.”

from football to recharge his batteries. He added: “The routine changes drastically straight away, and it’s a case of completely shutting the body down to allow it to rest and recover. “We won’t do anything for a few weeks, go on holiday with the family to allow the mind and body to settle. It has been an incredible week for Swinton Athletic who tied up two trophies this week as the County Senior League begins to wind down for the summer. League Cup Final The first thing on the agenda for Swinton Athletic in a huge week for them was the League Cup Final at the Memorial Ground on Tuesday night. Their opposition were Sheffield Medics of Division One, so they were touted as favourites. However, they did not have everything their own way, as they had to dig deep to win the game 3-2. Mark Clare starred for Swinton, scoring three times. Premier Division The League Cup was just the start for the busy Swinton. Just 48 hours they were held to a goalless draw away against North Gawber Colliery. They ended their week on Saturday with possible the biggest of all – an away trip to South Kirkby Colliery with the title on the line. They showed little signs of pressure or fatigue though as they wrapped-up the League Cup and Premier Division title double with a comfortable 3-0 win. The race for second place in the Premier Division is still fairly wide open. Third placed AFC Penistone Church Reserves’ hopes of second place were hindered on Saturday as they fell to a 3-1 defeat away against fifth placed Jubilee Sports.
Owls ace Barry Bannan is ready for a tough summer ahead. The Wednesday midfielder came back strongly from injury in the final throes of 2017/18. Although delighted to be back, Bannan now looks forward to a period away from the training ground before the preparations for 2018/19 get underway in just over a month’s time. “It’s been brilliant to be back playing but these six weeks off will help me shake off the minor injury niggles I’ve had with my groin and I will hopefully come back even stronger,” he told swfc.co.uk. “I am expecting a tough pre-season, it will be our first pre-season under the gaffer. “I’m sure it will involve a lot of running, a lot of fitness, a lot of hard work but it will be all worthwhile come the new season, that’s for sure. “We want to get back out there and give our best to get this club promoted back to the Premier League.” Sidelined from early December to mid-March, Bannan’s return to the team coincided with an excellent finish to the campaign from Wednesday. He added: “You obviously want to finish the season with a victory on the last day to head into the summer positively but more than that, I think we finished the season really well. “It probably finished a little bit too quickly for us, we knew our form came too late in the season but it was important to get players back fit and get back to winning games. “Hopefully now we can look forward, keep everybody fit, have a good off-season and get ready to come back firing.”

www.wadsleybridge-wmc.co.uk Grimethorpe Sports are in seventh place but have multiple games in hand on their rivals. They drew midweek 1-1 with sixth placed North Gawber Colliery. But rounded off the week with a big 11-0 win over Millmoor Juniors. Grimethorpe are 15 points off second placed Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves but have five games remaining. Division One There was just one story in Division One this week, with both games involving High Green Villa and their pursuit of second place. It was a productive week as well for them, as they won 3-2 at AFC Dronfield on Wednesday evening. They then beat Caribbean Sports 2-0 at home on the weekend. The win gives them a four point cushion over third placed Hepworth United. Division Two With title done and dusted in Division Two, it is also second place that is centre of attention. This week it held by Manor Hotel, after their 14-0 win over North Gawber Colliery Reserves on Saturday. A single goal from Joshua Cornwall was enough to give Wombwell Main Development a 1-0 home win over third placed Sheffield Bankers Reserves. Wombwell are in sixth place but trail Manor Hotel by just five points with three games left to play. At the Dorothy Hyman Stadium, Swinton Athletic Reserves beat Working Winders 3-1 to keep hold of fifth place, and an outside chance of second place themselves.
