VINTAGE HOP RETURNS FOR ITS 5TH YEAR Rotherham town centre will be the place to be for nostalgia-lovers on Saturday 2 June, as The Vintage Hop returns for its 5th year. A vintage market, vintage vehicle display, children’s entertainment and much more will provide a fantastic day out for all the family! There will be fabulous live music all day on two stages (one in All Saints’ Square and one near Boots,
Howard St) from The Washboard Resonators, Moonshiners, North Side Band, The Tombstone Buzzards, solo vintage singer Jilly Kemp and students from Rotherham College. The fun begins at 10.30 am, continuing until around 4.30 pm in the town centre, but music fans can continue to enjoy entertainment into the evening with three bands playing at The Bridge Inn,
including the ever popular Mee Kats. The Bridge is open all day, with the live music starting from 8.30 pm. The Vintage Hop will also see vintage-themed craft workshops from Gemma Nemer of the Button Tin, who was recently involved in creating the fantastic decorations in Elsecar to welcome the Tour de Yorkshire. Rotherham’s Chapel on the
Bridge will also be open from 10.00 am until 1.00 pm on the day of The Vintage Hop and will be hosting an art exhibition and sale from local artist Les Black. Cllr Denise Lelliott, Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Jobs and the Local Economy, said: “The Vintage Hop always proves to be a fabulous, fun day out and popular with visitors of all ages. “Visitors to the
event are always encouraged to dress up and it really adds to the nostalgic atmosphere on the day - we look forward to seeing your marvellous outfits at this year’s event!” As well as free weekend parking at Forge Island, visitors can get four hours parking for only £1.50 in a number of councilowned car parks every Saturday and two hours free in the Drummond Street “red zone”.

HAVE YOUR SAY ON THIS IS SHEFFIELD PLAN Sheffielders are being urged to have their say on how the city centre is changing. The Sheffield City Centre Plan This Is Sheffield – which is intended to cover development in the city until 2028 – has been launched with Councillor Mazher Iqbal, cabinet member for business and investment, keen to hear from as many businesses, residents and others with an interest in the city as possible. Following on from recent announcements about Heart Of The City II, the extension of Grey To Green into Castlegate and Lady’s Bridge and
the development of a new £3m digital hub at Castle House, the city centre plan This Is Sheffield shines a light on the bigger picture of city centre development over the next 10 years. It takes in plans by the city’s two universities, an initial sketch of how a new HS2 station link could help transform the Sheaf Valley, significant changes to transport including better walking, cycling and bus routes with a slimmed-down Pond Street interchange, ambitious plans to uncover the River Sheaf and a major archaeology dig on the site of Sheffield’s former castle.
It comes at an exciting time of opportunity when the future for economic, environmental and cultural progress rests more than ever on great cities which are authentic, diverse, resilient and fair, generating new ideas and more sustainable ways to live. This plan sets out a new vision and ambitions for our great city centre over the next five to ten years. It is a plan that shows how we think the layout and character of the centre and its distinct parts could and should develop, whilst building on what makes Sheffield unique such as its
/THEMERCURYNEWSPAPER
landscape, setting and heritage It also contains an action plan which sets out priorities and choices about how the council intends to deliver these plans and who will be responsible. An artist impression of how a HS2 station location could look An artist impression of how a HS2 station location could look The vision recognises that a strong city centre is essential for a strong city and region, and Sheffield’s centre must reflect our authentic, can-do, creative, welcoming , outdoor city character which
champions fairness and opportunity for all. The City Centre Plan is one of a family of plans to be launched by the City Council in 2018 setting out our physical strategies for the city as a whole. They include the Transport Vision, the Green City sustainability strategy, the Housing Strategy and the statutory Local Plan. The survey can be filled in online at www.sheffield.gov.uk/ citycentreplan until June 17

Born this week...
I got sacked from my job as a theatre designer. I left without making a scene. The wife said, “You haven’t listened to a word I’ve said, have you?” What strange way to start a conversation with me. I’ve just arrived in Australia to surprise my fiancée. She’s in Sheffield and the wedding’s tomorrow. My dad found out I had an imaginary girlfriend. He said, “You know, you could do better.” “Thanks dad, that means a lot,” I replied. “I was talking to your girlfriend!” My sister asked me if I wanted to wind her new born baby? I thought that was a bit harsh so I just gave him a dead leg instead. Some guy just assaulted me with milk, cream and butter. How dairy! If a tree falls in the forest and nobody hears it... Then my illegal logging business is a success! My Wife asked me before going to the hairdressers, “What cut do you think would make me more attractive?” “A power cut” was apparently the wrong answer.

Yorkshire Cosplay Convention returns to the FlyDSA Arena on Saturday 2nd & Sunday 3rd June for its third year following two hugely successful shows in the venue in 2016 & 2017. Yorkshire Cosplay Con is a huge, family-friendly convention blossoming in the heart of FlyDSA Arena. Cosplay (short for ‘Costume Play’) is for everyone; from children in fancy dress, to adults who want to embrace their alter-ego. From professional costumers to handcrafted costumes, you are likely to see a whole array of wonderful characters which wouldn’t be possible anywhere else. If you a fan of anime, comic books, sci-fi or video games, or an uber-geek who loves it all, then Yorkshire Cosplay is the ultimate fun packed weekend for you. Highlights this year include more than
250 exhibition stalls, live stage performances, contests, games areas, TV and film prop photo opportunities, workshops, panels and special guest signers. TV and film props on show will include a special Star Wars area, Doctor Who’s Tardis plus Daleks, a Jurassic Park interactive dinosaur, The Star Throne and a pirate zone - with a Captain Jack Sparrow look-a-like. International guests will include Billy West (Futurama Voices, Ren & Stimpy & Bugs Bunny) and Josh Grelle (Armin from Attack on Titan & Yuri from Yuri on Ice). Social media guests are CDawgVA (Voice Actor / Youtuber), Cauldron Of Mischief Cosplay (Cosplayer and Maker), Jimcredible (Stage Host / Cosplayer)., Jack Storey (Singer) , SuperSorrell (Youtuber / Toy Reviewer), Luna Chan Cosplay (Cosplayer), Northern Dragon Cosplay (Cosplayer / Maker), Xina Hailey (Youtuber / K-Pop Dancer) and Jack Pendragon (Fashion / Cosplayer). Co-organiser Jon Higson says dressing up as a character is not obligatory. “We have had lots of feedback and questions over the past two years from fans who want to come to the show but don’t want to come dressed up or have money for big budget costumes. We say come along, enjoy the show and wear what makes you happy and comfortable. You don’t have to cosplay, of course. But once you’ve been, you’ll be planning who to come as next year.” As an event Yorkshire Cosplay Con is now eight years old, from humble beginnings, bringing together like-minded people, YCC has grown to be one of the largest, most popular, events in the geek-calendar. So, join us next week for Yorkshire Cosplay Con Saturday 2nd & Sunday 3rd June 2018! Advanced prices start from only £11.20 for adults and £8.96 for children (including booking fee) available from the FlyDSA Arena Box Office, through the ticket hotline on 0114 256 56 56 or online at www.flydsaarena.co.uk

ALZHEIMERS - EARLY SYMPTOMS Legendary actress Dame Barbara Windsor has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at the age of 80. She had originally been given the news in April 2014 and has been taking medication since to manage the condition, according to a statement by her husband Scott Mitchell. He said that Windsor’s symptoms had worsened in recent weeks, with the actress suffering from memory loss and confusion. “Since her 80th birthday last August, a definite continual confusion has set in, so it’s becoming a lot more difficult for us to hide,” he told the newspaper. “I’m doing this because I want us to be able to go out and, if something isn’t quite right, it will be OK because people will now know that she has Alzheimer’s and will accept it for what it is. I hope speaking out will help other families dealing with loved ones who have this cruel disease. Secondly, I want the public to know because they are naturally very drawn to Barbara and she loves talking to them.” Alzheimer’s disease is a neurological disorder in which the death of brain cells causes memory loss and cognitive decline. It is the most common type of dementia, affecting 62% of those diagnosed in the UK. The symptoms of the disease usually progress slowly over several years, so at first they can appear mild, but become more severe over time. It is important to remember that everyone is unique and that no two people with Alzheimer’s are unlikely to experience the condition in exactly the same way. But while a few memory lapses are a normal part of ageing, there are some common warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease that can help you to determine if it’s something more serious. Here are the seven you should know… 1. Subtle short-term memory loss For most people with Alzheimer’s, the first symptoms emerge in the form of memory lapses. In particular, look out for short-term memory loss in loved ones; many people with Alzheimer’s can perfectly recall events from the past, but have trouble remembering recent events such as what they had for breakfast. This is because Alzheimer’s causes damage to a part of the brain called the hippocampus, which has an important role in day-to-day memory and retaining new information. 2. Struggling to complete everyday tasks Many of us know Alzheimer’s as a disease that causes memory loss like forgetting names or the day of the week. But this can also present itself through people losing track of money or being unable to manage bills, as their memory and reasoning skills decline.” Along with struggling to keep on top of household duties, they may find change and following new routines difficult too.
3. Struggling to find the right words Memory loss can increasingly interfere with daily life, particularly when it comes to conversation. You might notice a loved one struggles to find the right words to express themselves, gets the meaning of words mixed up or that speaking to them takes longer than usual. 4. Mood swings As symptoms appear, you may notice that you or a loved one exhibits changes in mood that could be out of character for them. Others might lack their usual spontaneity or even exhibit changes to their preferences in food and drink. 5. Confusion Alzheimer’s can also lead to confusion. Some people might go for a walk, and not remember where they are or how to get home. Other might think that possessions have been hidden or stolen. 6. Being repetitive Repetition is a common early symptom which is triggered by memory loss. The person may repeat daily tasks, such as locking the front door, showering or cleaning. Look out for repetition in conversation too; they may tell the same story multiple times or ask the same question after hearing the answer. 7. Eyesight changes We all know that Alzheimer’s causes changes to the brain, but it also can impact a person’s eyesight. Vision problems such as an increased difficulty in reading or problems judging distance aren’t always easy to spot but are a concern because more than 60% of those with Alzheimer’s will have a decline in visual capacity. It’s important to seek medical advice as soon as possible, if you’re seeing a loved one demonstrating these behaviours. Unfortunately there’s not currently a cure for Alzheimer’s, or a way of halting its progression. That’s why it’s so important that people are aware on the simple changes they can make to help assist people with Alzheimer’s. Although Alzheimer’s presents challenges, there are some easy and practical ways we can support people living with the disease: For example, we can help them to stay physically and mentally active, or help with developing coping strategies like making lists, labels and reminders that can lessen the impact of memory loss. The way we communicate with people can also play a large part in managing Alzheimer’s. Group conversations can be hard to follow for people with Alzheimer’s, so try and stick to oneon-one conversations where possible. Likewise, minimise background distractions where possible, for example by turning off the TV or radio.

STREET TRIAGE RESEARCH PROJECT
Rivka Smith, a PhD student from The University of Sheffield, is conducting a study to examine the delivery of Street Triage teams in England. Street Triage is the name given when a mental health worker accompanies a police officer to an urgent or emergency incident where it is reported that someone may need help with their mental health. The research project is seeking to understand how Street Triage teams operate and what people think about the service they have received from them. Rivka aims for this research to be published and to benefit people who may come in to contact with the Street Triage team in the future. In previous research on Street Triage, the views of service users have not been included. This is an opportunity for you to share your experiences to help Street Triage teams understand how best to deliver this kind of service in the future.

NATIONAL COAL MINING MUSEUM CELEBRATES IT’S 30TH BIRTHDAY Thirty years ago this June, the Yorkshire Mining Museum was born. Now, as the National Coal Mining Museum for England, we are celebrating the Museum’s birthday by hosting a day to remember our past, celebrate our present and look forward to our future. We’re sharing 30 Facts about the Museum on our social media pages in the run up to the big day. For example ‘The mine shaft where visitors descend was sunk in the 1780s by John Milnes. It is the earliest coal mining shaft still in use in Britain. The depth of the shaft is equivalent to the height of Blackpool tower – 140m down.’ On Sunday 3rd June we are encouraging visitors to bring a picnic for the Big Miners’ Picnic and there will be lots for them to see and do around site. There will be music from the Yorkshire Traction Honley Band as well as our own Musicians in Residence supported by the Caphouse Singers who will be performing a piece especially for this day. The Northern World War Two Association will be onsite displaying genuine and replica weapons, uniforms and equipment, with firing displays and battle reenactments. The Coal Shed Poets will be moving around site asking for stories of the Museum to turn into an anniversary poem. We will also be joined by our friends at Edgeland Arts who will be collecting visitors’ memories of living and working in Wakefield on their interactive map. There will also be craft activities, inviting people to help create the Museum of Future. We will be hosting our Volunteer
Showcase, which will recognise the contributions of their current volunteers and provide an opportunity for the local community to experience what volunteering life is like at the Museum, and be encouraged to get involved. And of course there will be lots of Birthday cake! Shaun McLoughlin, Head of Engagement at the Museum comments “We’ve had a fantastic start to the year with our special events and exhibitions programme. We’re ready to welcome visitors in our 30th year – it’s a celebration of our past, present and looking ahead to the future now we have Heritage Lottery Funding in place to develop the Museum’s facilities. We’re very proud of the reputation we have as one of Yorkshire’s iconic visitor attractions. Visitors tell us what they enjoy the most is learning about life in coalmining communities and they are impressed by the humour and warmth from the miner guides who bring their personal experiences into the tour. It’s a great day out for all the family. ”

With a recent £170,000 investment, Stonegate Pub Company have brought the Fox into the modern day, whilst still retaining the character of a good old fashioned pub. They have a fantastic range of cask beer, something that Dan personally is extremely fanatical about, and he would love for
customers old and new to come down and enjoy the pubs new look. On the 27th of May they are holding a Charity Family fun day to raise money for Raymond Haynes, a member of the Beighton community, who has been suffering with his mobility for some time now after a liver transplant last year. Dan says “It would be fantastic if people could come down and support him and us for this worthy cause. We have face painting for the kids; various childfriendly exercises such as penalty shoot outs, as well as a live Motown singer, Celena Deans in the evening. I look forward to seeing you there and can’t wait to share this fantastic pub with you!”

THE ‘S’ FACTOR - SHERWOOD LOOKS FOR TALENTED VOLUNTEERS TO HELP WOW VISITORS The team responsible for running the new visitor centre at Sherwood Forest when it opens this summer is looking for some extra special volunteers who’ll be able to bring the ‘S Factor’ to the forest. Nadia Archer, RSPB volunteer development officer for Sherwood Forest explained that part of the new offer at Sherwood this summer will include having costumed volunteers throughout the forest, helping to give visitors a taste of what life would have been like in Robin Hood’s day. To help find these volunteers, Nadia’s team will be at Sherwood Forest on Monday, May 28, showing off some of the costumes which have been made especially for the roles, and talking to anyone who may be interested in getting involved. “We want to tell our visitors the wonderful stories of Sherwood in some new and innovative ways – and we need some wonderful people to help us do this!” she explained. “As a costumed volunteer, you’ll be one of our visitor guides in the forest. You’ll be dressed in costume authentic to those who lived and worked here in medieval times, and share stories with the public about a range of subjects, from the legend of Robin Hood to the nature that thrives here. “We’re not looking for actors or entertainers (though you may be one!) but people who have a passion for Sherwood, enjoy telling a good tale and love to work with people. We don’t just want people to come to Sherwood and like it – we want them to love it!”
Here’s what makes up the ‘S’ Factor for us … S – Stories. Help us bring to life the fantastic tales and legends that make this place so special by retelling them to visitors. H – History. The forest has a long and rich history – you can help our visitors to understand what shaped this landscape, and how that informs the work we’re doing here today to protect it for the future. E – Enjoyment. Volunteering should be fun! And we think these will be great roles for a people-person, wanting to get involved in our work here.
R – Robin Hood. He’s the reason Sherwood Forest is known the world over – continuing his legend will help to spread the messages we have about this unique landscape! W – Wildlife – introducing our visitors to the creatures that make their home here, and talking about why this forest is so important to them is a vital part of the role! O – Oak trees. They’re huge and magnificent, and are at the centre of everything that goes on here. Walking amongst them everyday will be a big perk of the job! O - Original – that’s what you are! Your own style will be what visitors love! D – Dedicated. We are looking for dedicated and passionate volunteers as you will have your own costume and be an important member of the team
The Costumes
Professional costumier, Anne Ryan, from Nottingham, has already lent her vast experience in making authentic period costumes to the project. She is leading a series of workshops at Sherwood, showing a number of other volunteers how to make the costumes. More than 30 keen costume-makers have already begun the task of building up a wardrobe of outfits – with those taking part ranging from 20-something students to amateur dress-makers with a life-long passion for sewing. Anne, who ran her own historical costume company for more than 30 years, providing outfits for a host of settings, from films and theatre to museums and exhibitions, is proud of her Nottinghamshire roots, and was keen to get involved to ensure authenticity. “I said I would only get involved if what we were doing was authentic. I know that Sherwood Forest is visited by people from around the world, who come to Nottinghamshire with their own expectations of what Robin Hood who’ve worn, and I wanted to make sure we were doing it right!” she explained. “I’ve used my knowledge of clothing from that time, combined with some practical elements that need to be considered, as people will be wearing these throughout the year, together with what I know about the colours, the cloth and the shapes of that era.
“There are a couple of adaptions – for instance, we thought a modern-day man might not be so comfortable with the leggings worn at that time, which are more like tights, so we’ve made them a little less fitted, but everything has been done to combine practicality with authenticity, both of which are essential.” To find out more about the S Factor event, which is being held in the courtyard of the current Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre on bank holiday Monday (28) contact nadia.archer@ rspb.org.uk More exciting roles, both employed and voluntary, will be announced in the near future – see www.rspb.org.uk The new visitor centre will open this summer, when the RSPB-led consortium will also take over responsibility of the forest, on behalf
of Nottinghamshire County Council. Other partners include Sherwood Forest Trust, Thoresby Estate and The Woodland Trust. With the building water-tight, work is now well under way internally, and first fix is complete. The individual rooms and spaces are really starting to take shape, and externally, work has started on the paving around the main entrance.
The new partnership will also take charge of its first Robin Hood Festival – now in its 34th year – which runs from Monday, August 27 to Sunday, September 2. For more details about all of this, see www.visitsherwood.co.uk

PLANET FLY IN FROM DOWN UNDER Planet is the culmination of several years of trial and error in songcraft, performance and production. Matty Took (vox and rhythm), Tom Peppitt (lead guitar), Harrison Stewart-Weeks (drums) and Jimmy Weaver (bass) were first brought together by their shared love of music: old and new, foreign and domestic. Drawing influences from past and present the four-piece combine pop laden guitar hooks with soaring vocal melodies. The result is a sound which is reminiscent of Britpop but remains undeniably Australian. In 2016 PLANET released a slew of singles, including ‘Undermine’ and ‘Can’t Connect’, which were subsequently added to high rotation on Triple J Unearthed and also received airtime on Dom Alessio’s “Home and Hosed” program. The lads pushed forward into 2017 releasing ‘Aching Dream’, the first single off their forthcoming EP, exclusively premiered via Rolling Stone Australia who describe it as “a minimal ballad ... [building into] epicness suited for stadium sway-a-longs”. The song has since received a number of plays across Triple J and Unearthed.
Overseas the band’s unique sound has drawn attention and airtime in the UK on “This Feeling” and Radio XFM. Having signed with booking agents New World Artists in late 2016, Planet kept themselves busy playing a string of shows all over the country supporting British India and UK giants JAMES. They also made their debut on the Australian festival circuit securing slots at Festival of the Sun, Lost Paradise, Party in the Paddock, Blurst of Times. As proof of their ability to stand on their own merit, look no farther than their first ever interstate single tour. The boys played three shows in support of their most recent effort, ‘Aching Dream’. Starting with an intimate affair at The Foundry in Brisbane, the band headed down to Melbourne to play a rowdy post-midnight gig at Yah Yahs before bringing it all back home for a sold out show at The Chippo in Sydney.
Over the course of this period the band have developed a tight and energetic live show which has on more than one occasion resulted in sweat drenched t-shirts and arm in arm sing-a-longs. While PLANET remains, for the most part, a staunchly independent labour of love - all songs being recorded in Matty Took’s bedroom studio - the band employed producer Lachlan Mitchell (Jezebels, Little Bastard) to add his touch to their past singles as well as their upcoming debut EP. Dave Ruby Howe of Triple J has said of the band, “Every song feels like a step forward for them to the point now that they’re 10 paces out in front.” Showing no signs of slowing down, 2018 is set to be a big year for the band. KATY PERRY SET TO BRING FIREWORKS TO THE FLYDSA ARENA With Witness, Katy finds liberation, in the changes in her own life and in the world around her, delivering songs that inspire both thought and movement. The singles released thus far – the Platinum-certified “Chained to the Rhythm” featuring Skip Marley, and the new singles, “Bon Appétit” featuring Migos and “Swish Swish” featuring Nicki Minaj – hint at the breadth of the musical and thematic elements found on Witness. In the wake of the US tour’s blockbuster sales and added concerts, Katy Perry announces the UK & European leg of WITNESS: The Tour. Produced by AEG Presents, the tour will come to the FlyDSA Arena on Tuesday 19th June 2018. Tickets, priced from £56 to £134.40 (including booking fee) are available from www. flydsaarena.co.uk, 0114 256 56 56 or in person from the Arena Box Office. WITNESS: The Tour is Katy’s first run since the sold-out, 151date Prismatic World Tour, which concluded in 2015 and was hailed by Rolling Stone as “a show to damage retinas and blow minds.” Sponsors include COVERGIRL and KATY PERRY PARFUMS.
Katy made her Capitol Records debut with 2008’s One of the Boys after signing to the label in 2007. She cemented her status as a global superstar with the follow-up album, Teenage Dream (2010). PRISM, her 2013 album, debuted at No. 1 on iTunes in 100 countries and has sold more than 12.5 million adjusted albums worldwide. With the singles “Firework” and “Dark Horse” each surpassing the 10 million threshold including song sales and streams, Katy is the first female artist to earn two RIAA Digital Single Diamond Awards. In her 10 years with Capitol, she has racked up a cumulative 18+ billion streams alongside worldwide sales of more than 40+ million adjusted albums and 125+ million tracks. She is the most-followed person
globally on Twitter. Hailee Steinfeld is set to support Katy in Sheffield! Republic Records recording artist Hailee Steinfeld quickly cemented herself as a force to be reckoned with in pop music with a series of hits such as the 2015 platinum-certified debut single “Love Myself,” the double platinum-selling smash “Starving” with Grey [feat. Zedd], and the platinum-selling summer anthem “Most Girls.” To date, the multiplatinum-selling artist has amassed a total of nearly 2 billion streams globally.

CELEBRATION OF BRITISH INDIE CAPS OFF THE HOST OF CELEBRITIES TAKE TO THE HILLSBOROUGH LEADMILL’S WEEKEND OUTDOOR SPECTACULAR PITCH THIS FRIDAY IN AID OF CHARITIES Sheffield’s legendary Independent venue The Leadmill last week revealed that Ocean Colour Scene will be the third act to headline Don Valley Bowl this summer, alongside previously announced Hacienda Classical, and George Ezra. Revellers can expect a whole day of spectacular live music with The Coral, The Bluetones, Dodgy, and Sheafs
already confirmed to be heading down to support the Birmingham band, Ocean Colour Scene, on Sunday 19 August 2018. Following their 1989 formation, Britpop veterans Ocean Colour Scene have released nine albums, three of which made the Top 5. In 1996 they stormed to number 2 in the UK charts with their sensational second album Moseley Shoals which spawned four Top 20 singles, including the phenomenal and instantly recognisable anthems The Day We Caught The Train and The Riverboat Song. The Birmingham band has always stuck firmly to their roots to give the fans what they came for, and we’re sure they’ll continue to produce the
same amazing music at this year’s Don Valley show. Having burst onto the scene in 2002 with their self-titled debut album, The Coral are most notable for the psychedelia fused, happy-go-lucky indie sounds of Dreaming Of You and In The Morning. It doesn’t stop there, London band, The Bluetones will also be supporting Ocean Colour Scene this August, along with ‘Staying Out For The Summer’ singers Dodgy, and Sheffieldborn five-piece Sheafs. Samuel Feeley, Promoter at The Leadmill said: “We really can’t wait for this one. It’s going to be a day full of singalong anthems! All of the bands on the line-up have played the venue over the years so it’s somewhat of a greatest hits line-up for us as promoters!” With such an eclectic
line-up over the August weekend, The Leadmill’s Don Valley Bowl shows have something for everyone; the weekend is sure to be unmissable for music lovers up and down the country. Tickets for The Leadmill’s huge Sunday show are on sale now from leadmill.co.uk – with tickets priced at £35 this show is set to be not only a fantastic day out but amazing value for money.
WIN TICKETS!!! The Leadmill have kindly given us a pair of tickets to give away to a lucky reader. Simply answer the following questions and send your entry with a daytime telephone contact number to info@ mercurynewsaper.co.uk or via post to 4b Queens Road, Sheffield S2 4DG before 15/6/18. Well, since getting on the plane at Manchester, I’ve had an unpleasant surprise. Carp-Talk magazine, a staple of many carp anglers for the last 24 years, and a publication I’ve written for for over 9 years, is to close. After initially sending a cheeky email to Editor Simon Crow which basically stated ‘gissa job’ and subsequently being given the opportunity of a 3 month temporary slot, I’ve gone on to write not just the northwest column, but after a reshuffle, the north and west area catches which covered around two thirds of the UK. In total, I reckon I’ve written about 650 weekly reports, each of at least 750 words, sometimes double that, so at a conservative estimate, I’d guess close to 700,000 words over the years! Almost all have come from my readers, sharing their reports, and all I’ve really had to do is edit into readable format, add the picture, and submit for deadline. As a result, I’d like to thank each and every angler who has submitted catch reports and read my columns, I couldn’t have done it without you! Rising print costs and an increase in spending on online advertising have no doubt contributed to a difficult decision for the owners, but I’d also like to place on record my gratitude to them, for giving me a chance to write in the first place… I’ll miss it! Having covered that, I mentioned recently that I’m currently in Australia, and well, things are a little bit different here! I haven’t had time to go fishing yet, but I have had the chance to visit a couple of tackle shops to see how things vary from back home. I wandered into popular chain store BCF to be met with a vast array of tackle, much of it similar to UK stock, but with the addition of plenty of other things too. Lure fishing is huge in Australia, and the shops are really geared up to offer the imitation angler an overwhelming amount of choice, but bait fishing is also catered for too… I haven’t seen a boilie yet though, and when I explained what they were, I’m sure the staff thought I was quite mad! In truth, carp are viewed as little more than a pest in Australian waters, and I’ve already spoken to anglers who thought nothing of throwing a 20lb fish ‘up the bank’! When I revealed that in the UK, a specially reared carp of particular strain could fetch large sums of money if you wanted to buy it, I wasn’t too surprised when Australian anglers offered to post some over for free! There are even plans in place by Government to introduce KHV to supress the amount of ‘invaders’ in local waters it’s got that bad! Imagine not being able to catch your target fish without hooking carp? I know some UK anglers who can only dream of such things! Back in the tackle shop though, it’s easy to recognise many of the brands on show, with Savage Gear, Rapala, ZMan, Ecogear and many others represented, but also dozens of smaller lines I’ve never heard of. I was surprised at the pricing of many ‘known’ brands, most coming in at around half of UK prices. I’ve never seen so many varieties

of lure either, whether soft or hard body, there were aisles stacked floor to ceiling with thousands of tempters, and I did struggle to keep my wallet in my pocket! Rod and reel combinations were superbly priced too, with a Shimano beach rod and matching fixed spool reel available for as little as £50, and hooks were a real bargain. I picked up 60 Gamatsu circle hooks to allow me to present pike deadbaits later in the year for just a few dollars… Some of the reels would not have looked amiss on a crane, with big game fishing, although expensive, a real attraction for many anglers, who could also pick up foot long marlin lures, spearguns, and shark hooks off the shelf! It’s not often I can use the phrase ‘like a kid in a sweet shop’ but I was. It was astonishing! The staff were on the ball too; I visited a shop around 10 miles from where I’m staying (which is classed as ‘close’ over here) and they were able to tell me what I could expect to catch in the tiny local creek, and how best to do it, right down to the best time of day… I know shops in the UK where I wouldn’t get that kind of information. Eventually, I had a day to myself, so struck out for the town beach and harbour to see what the locals were catching. I spoke to a beach angler, casting small fish tails for bream, whiting and flatheads (no, I don’t know either) who described dislocating his shoulder whilst returning a shark he had caught which flipped and caught him by surprise. I asked what kind of shark, and he just winked at me, and said “…what sort do you think?” Apparently, the Great White can be caught just a few metres from shore, so I’ll have to ask the wife to check… I then moved on to the harbour and chatted with a trio of locals who were targeting similar species, again with small baited hooks and tiny leads but unfortunately without much success. I stared deep into the clear blue waters, and spied some big bream, hordes of tiny fish in midwater, but then glimpsed a dark shadow glide across the ocean floor… It took a second or two to realise that I was staring at a stingray, and a big one too. It was at least four feet across, and it stopped directly below to inhale the remains of the filleted fish in use by the anglers next to me. I was less than a rod length away from it and hadn’t bought one with me! There was no point in the Australian anglers having a go either, as their 15lb braid and tiny hooks would have been no match for it, but what a treat to see! After having a beer, comparing notes with my Aussie compatriots, and sharing catch pictures, I’ve now found a few spots to fish; I’ll have to return to the tackle shop just to pick up a few extra bits, but then I’m good to go. I have no idea what I’ll catch, but then I’m in Australia, so who really cares? For the angler, this country is perfect… unless you’re a carper, then I probably wouldn’t recommend it! Tight lines!

THE IMPORTANCE OF BLADES PRE-SEASON PLANS CONTINUE TO PRE-SEASON TAKE SHAPE The Owls can confirm that the squad’s pre-season preparations for the 2018/19 campaign will be based on home soil. Manager Jos Luhukay considered a range of options both in England and across Europe but given his experiences of the past has opted for the former. He said: “We thought about going away but I have spent a lot years in Austria, Holland and Germany so know the travel always takes a lot of time out of the camps. “When you go and come back, you lose at least one and often two training days so we have decided we will stay in England. “The physical side from the team and the players is very important. The Championship is such a strong, intensive league so you must have good preparation. “Pre-season is always very important. We have to come in a good feeling and in a good shape.” The Owls’ full itinerary of pre-season fixtures will be confirmed and communicated in due course.
Three local friendlies against EFL teams have been confirmed as United continue to build up to the 2018/19 Sky Bet Championship season. United have already announced that the pre-season campaign will kick off at Stocksbridge Park Steel on Saturday 7th July. The Blades will also visit Bradford City, Mansfield Town and Doncaster Rovers in July. The trip to Northern Commercials Stadium to face Bradford City will be on Tuesday 17th July, with a 7.30pm kick-off. This will be followed by a visit to the One Call Stadium to face David Flitcroft's Mansfield Town on Saturday 21st July, kicking off at 3pm. Then a short trip to the Keepmoat Stadium is planned on Friday 27th July (7.45pm kick-off) to face Darren Ferguson's Doncaster Rovers. In addition, a pre-season training camp and a friendly in Europe are being organised, whilst it is hoped a home friendly will also be arranged. Once details have been finalised, sufc.co.uk will have all the information. The Sky Bet Championship season will kick-off on Saturday 4th August.

DREAM COME TRUE FOR MORRIS James Morris was delighted to sign professional terms with his boyhood club after successfully progressing through Rovers’ academy. The 18-year-old striker was handed a professional deal by Darren Ferguson after netting seven goals for the U18s’ side this season, and he is excited for the future. “Obviously I’m very happy with the new deal, I’ve been working towards it for the last two years now and it’s just a great achievement to have done what
I have,” he said. “What makes it extra special is that I’m a supporter myself and I’ve been following Rovers since I was a boy, I’ve had season tickets for a few years too, so it is really great to play for your childhood team. “There’s a good development side being assembled now so I want to kick-on in there and make a few squad appearances along the way too.” 2018/19 Sky Bet League One Silver Membership’s are on sale from the Club Doncaster Box Office, get yours now by calling 01302 762 576 or by purchasing online at tickets. clubdoncaster.co.uk
