VIEWS SOUGHT ON FUTURE OF ROTHERHAM MARKETS Residents are being asked for their views on the future design of Rotherham markets as part of Rotherham Council’s plans to regenerate the town centre. From Tuesday 29th May until Friday 15th June, a new exhibition will feature in one of the indoor market stalls. Rotherham Markets; Past Present and Future looks at the history of Rotherham market and its future development – with customers visiting the stall being given the chance to submit their thoughts in writing. The regeneration of Rotherham markets is identified as a key project within the Town Centre Masterplan. A number of design options will be prepared

to modernise both the Centenary outdoor covered and indoor markets. Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Jobs and the Local Economy Cllr Denise Lelliott said: “Rotherham has always been a proud market town and we know a lot of our residents have a fondness for our town centre markets, which is why we are asking for people’s opinions and ideas on how we can improve the indoor and outdoor covered markets, whilst ensuring that their ‘historic charm’ and what currently works well is not lost.” Rotherham Council’s Town Centre Masterplan brings to life how the town is moving forwards, utilising its river and canal, its open

spaces and its feature buildings. At the heart of the plan is a vision to create a much-improved visitor experience with more to do and to see. Plans include a major leisure destination at Forge Island with a cinema, hotel, and eateries, a new University Centre, refurbished bus station, and a large increase in the number of people living in the town centre. Earlier this year, Rotherham Council asked for expressions of interest for the development of Forge Island, with more than 35 development packs sent to interested parties. From these, three bidders have now been asked to make detailed submissions. Demolition work, site

preparation and further flood alleviation work is taking place around the site, with new hoardings in place. A development partner will be chosen in the Autumn, following interviews and evaluation, before a planning application is submitted. Building work is expected to start towards the end of 2019 or early 2020. Rotherham Council’s Strategic Director of Regeneration and Environment Damien Wilson said: “The pace of the regeneration in the town centre is unlike anything I’ve seen and I’ve worked in areas up and down the country. “The Masterplan has been adopted, we’ve made acquisitions, demolished buildings,

funding has been secured for projects such as the University Centre Rotherham and the bus interchange, and housing sites are being brought to market. In two years, that’s massive.” Rotherham Markets; Past Present and Future can be found at stall 47 on the ground floor of the Indoor Market. It will be open at the following times: • 10am to 2pm on: Tuesday 29 May, Thursday 31 May, Monday 4 June, Wednesday 6 June, Friday 8 June, Monday 11 June, Wednesday 13 June and Friday 15 June 10am until noon on Saturday 2 June.

COPING WITH CARE AT HOME - THE MYTHS DEAFNESS 1 in 6 people are affected by hearing loss, and in the UK, more than 2 million people have hearing aids. It’s especially common as we age; 41% of over 50s have some form of hearing loss.Communication barriers as a result of deafness can be isolating for sufferers – lack of confidence, exclusion from society, depression and unemployment are all common challenges. Deaf Awareness Week is an opportunity for people to learn more about how to better support those with hearing loss. Be deaf aware There’s plenty you can do to support deaf people in your community and help them feel included at work and in social situations. Here’s some simple pointers to remember: • Get their attention – Make sure you have the attention of the person before you start speaking to them. Otherwise, they may not catch what you’re saying. • Choose the right setting – The best place for communication is one with good lighting and as little background noise as possible to hear and understand conversation. • Use plain language – Plain language, normal lip movements and facial expressions make it easier for a person who’s deaf to understand you. Speak slowly and in a straightforward way. • Watch your volume – Shouting can be uncomfortable for hearing aid users. Speak at a regular volume instead. • Check they understand – Make sure you check the person understands what you’re saying. If not, try saying it again or in a different way. Never say ‘don’t worry about it’ or dismiss the conversation – this can make them feel excluded and isolated. Try British Sign Language In addition to speech and lipreading, many deaf people also rely on British Sign Language to communicate. It’s a combination of hand shapes and movements, facial expressions, shoulder movements and lip patterns. If you’re interested in learning, you can find great resources online through the charity British Sign.

Care at home is an increasingly popular alternative to moving into a care home – but it is still poorly understood by many. Here are some of the most common myths and misconceptions about this type of care. 1. Private Care at home is only for the wealthy Many families often immediately disregard home care as an option because they assume it is too expensive. This is not always true – you will be surprised to learn the costs of care at home are typically lower than residential care. The cost of home care will depend on the area, care needs and provider. Working with agency carers is typically more expensive than finding a carer through an introductory agency. 2. If you want to use professional home carers, you’ll get different carers for each visit Historically, unless you knew a private carer through personal connections your only home care option was a care agency. While some agencies make a real effort to send the same carers, their tight margins often mean that they are forced to roster carers for efficiency – at the cost of consistency. These days, there are a number of introductory agencies which can help you find a qualified, vetted professional carer to work with directly. As your relationship will be with the individual carers you have chosen, you can be assured that it will be the same friendly face visiting each time. 3. If your Local Authority pays for your care, they will pick your provider and care package According to the 2014 Care Act, every person eligible for Local Authority-funded care has the right to choose their own care

THIS IS SHEFFIELD Sheffielders are being urged to have their say on how the city centre is changing following the launch of a new consultation. This Is Sheffield – which is intended to cover development in the city until 2028 – has been launched with Councillor Mazher Iqbal keen to hear from as many businesses, residents and others with an interest in the city as possible. A survey can be filled in online until June 17 and public exhibitions have been held in the Winter Garden. Following on from recent announcements about Heart Of The City II, the extension of Grey To Green into Castlegate and Lady’s Bridge and the development of a new £3m digital hub at Castle House, the city centre plan This Is Sheffield shines a light on the bigger picture of city centre development over the next 10 years.

package and provider. This means that they are obliged to give you the money to spend on your preferred providers if that is what you want. This form of support is called a Direct Payment, and is explained in more detail on the NHS website 4. If you own a house, you will have to sell it and spend the proceeds before the Local Authority will pay for your care To receive financial support from your Local Authority, you need to first undergo a care assessment and a means test. Put very simply, if your savings are below the higher threshold you will receive some assistance, and if they are below the lower threshold the Local Authority will pay for your care in full. If you are moving into residential care, the cost of your home may be considered when your savings are being calculated. However, if you opt for care at home it will not. 5. Care is an unskilled profession While carers aren’t accredited like doctors and nurses, caring is still a highly skilled profession which can be physically and emotionally challenging. Professional care workers undergo extensive training in order to gain their qualifications, which are required to work for any regulated care agency. Most introductory services will also require these qualifications, and will check their validity on your behalf before the carer can register themselves as available to work. 6. Care at home is not suitable for the very sick Sometimes people think home care is only appropriate for individuals with less advanced care needs, whilst a care home is the only safe option for those requiring around-the-clock care. However, home care organisations often provide roundthe-clock, personalised, intensive care. This can even be nurse-led, if needed. 7. Care at home is only for the sick Carers don’t just look after ill people. They can also provide companionship, domestic assistance, errand-running and transportation. A common misconception of hiring a home carer is having to sacrifice independence and freedom – when in fact a carer will do the opposite and help you maintain independence, safety and freedom resulting in a higher quality of life.

MEDAL EXPERTS VISIT SHEFFIELD, BARNSLEY & SOUTH YORKSHIRE TO HELP RAISE MONEY FOR LOCAL EX-SERVICE CHARITIES The week commencing Monday June 4th could be a fantastic opportunity for residents of Sheffield & Barnsley to beat the credit crunch and cash in on their inherited and unwanted Medals. As well as coins and all associated items or unwanted gold and silver items for this is the week that the team of experts from The Medal Centre will be running a week of specialist Coin and Medal valuation days in & around South Yorkshire with Venues in Hillsborough, Darton, Sheffield, Silkstone common, Killamarsh, Mapplewell & Barnsley Each of the specialists present are experts in their own chosen field and they will be on hand to give free verbal valuations on any inherited Medals and military items as well as coins and banknotes and most other small collectibles. Including scrap gold and broken jewellery in any form but particularly gold coins such as sovereigns and kruggerands or gold watches and watch chains. Please remember that any one of the experts will be happy to make you an immediate on the spot cash offer for your unwanted items and they will be happy to offer the very best prices available and most people are delighted at the large amounts they are offered. This is because each of the valuers in attendance are members of respected trade organisations such as the Orders & Medals research society & the British Numismatic trade association The Medal Centre last have been asked to return to a number of local venues due to the huge response to the event held at this venue last time that they visited. One local resident

was absolutely thrilled to accept a four figure sum for her small tin box containing her late Uncles Medals for bravery during WW1 along with his campaign medals for service in the Boer War and WW1 and a small selection of gold and silver coins along with a small amount of broken gold jewellery. The lady said that not only was she astounded to discover how much her items were worth but the money could not have come at a better time due to the current financial situation and on top of all that she was delighted to be able to help local ex-servicemen & women There has never been a better time to sell your inherited collectable items as, due to The Medal Centres vast client base, they are able to offer the best possible prices and the Medal Centres proprietor Mr Andrew Jukes was recently quoted as saying “we are now able to pay exceptionally high prices for all Medals from a single item to a complete collection”. Prices for this type of item are at an all time high & people are often surprised how much some of the associated items such as cloth & metal badges or items of uniform & paperwork & photographs can enhance the value of a group of medals. Even items such as Military paybooks or old Military Photographs will always be of interest to a genuine collector. Mr Jukes also commented that at the moment good quality English & Scottish banknotes are in very high demand & he is paying very high prices for such items. He also made a point of saying how pleased he is that he now has a new in house expert on philately & stamps & he would now welcome the offer of mint condition British stamps including presentation packs & stamp collections. It is also a good way to help your local community as The Medal Centre will be giving a donation to local ex-service charities for every item they are able to purchase on the day. However if you cannot attend on the day one of the experts from The Medal Centre will be happy to call and see you at your convenience and they can be contacted on 01434 609794 or 07950 421704.

Young entrepreneurs pitching for success Ambitious young entrepreneurs are being invited to kick-start their business, trading at the Sheffield Youth Market in the Peace Gardens on Saturday 16 June. In partnership with the National Market Traders Federation (NMTF) and sponsored by Market Place, Sheffield City Council is hosting a one day youth market as part of a family of youth markets being delivered by local authorities across Yorkshire. Stalls are available to young people who want to start up, launch or grow their business. To qualify for a pitch, traders must be aged between 16 and 30. The stalls which are free of charge to traders, are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Councillor Mary Lea, cabinet member for culture, parks and leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for young people across to the city to test out, launch or expand their business. “There’s an abundance of talent and ambition in the city, which we are very keen to support. We continue to invest in and improve Sheffield’s markets and the next generation of traders have a big part to play in that. I hope we’ll see a range of flair and creativity showcased at this event and I’d encourage our young entrepreneurs to apply for a stall and see where this can take them.” At least four young traders from Sheffield will be nominated to be our representatives at the Yorkshire Youth Market, a regional final held on Yorkshire Day, 1 August, at Kirkgate Market, Leeds, with prizes awarded to all four. From this event, there’s also an opportunity to be selected for a pitch on the National Youth Market in Stratford-upon-Avon on 31 August and 1 September, where a £500 prize is up for grabs. Traders who progress to further stages of the Youth Markets will receive support with travel at the regional competition and travel and accommodation at the national final, from Sheffield markets. The National Youth Market is run by the NMTF in part-

nership with LSD Promotions. It attracts traders from all over the UK and is a showcase of young talent who trade on markets, festivals and fairs. Karon Breckon expanded her business, Meadowhead Flowers, with a pop-up stall in the Moor Market in 2016. The pop-up stall was a huge success and she now runs a full time stall in the market as well as her working from home as a florist in Meadowhead. She said: “I love working in my florist but wanted to expand my business outside of my local area. “When I saw the opportunity to try out a pop-up shop in the Moor Market, I thought there was nothing to lose. The stall was low-cost, low-risk and gave me the chance to test out my business in the market environment. It was a brilliant opportunity and the markets team made it very easy for me to set up a permanent business there. The Peace Gardens will also play host to the annual Chance to Dance event on 16 June, which attracts hundreds of people, providing a ready audience for stall holders to practice their trading skills on.

CELEBRATE THE SOUND PROG ROCK STAR NEAL MORSE ARRIVES IN SHEFFIELD FOR UP OF QUEEN AT CITY HALL CLOSE AND PERSONAL SHOW

After thrilling sell-out audiences across the globe for 25 years, Killer Queen are ready to recreate and celebrate the sound of the world’s greatest live band at Sheffield City Hall on Friday 1st June. With November marking the release of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, a major Hollywood film documenting the years leading up to Queen’s legendary appearance at Live Aid in 1985, 2018 is set to be a huge year for fans of the rock legends and the perfect time to celebrate the powerful phenomenon that was Queen live. In 2006 Killer Queen had the honour of their own Live Aid experience supporting Sir Bob Geldof in a fundraising concert for the homeless in Malta. Killer Queen have been performing their tribute to Queen’s concert since 1993; their expert musicianship, extraordinary energy and accurate portrayal have rightfully earned them the title of Queen tribute royalty. Fronted by Patrick Myers along with his superb

four piece band, Patrick’s recreation of the legendary Queen frontman Freddie Mercury has impressed audiences all over the world with his powerful octave tenor range and dynamic stage presence. Killer Queen have gone from strength to strength over the past 25 years as Patrick Myers reflects “that first show back in June 1993 changed my life. We thought our band would last maybe a summer at the most but it’s a very addictive thing performing these songs! The concerts grew and grew and we’ve ended up playing and selling out the same

arenas that Queen played at their peak. It’s been quite a surreal ride.” Killer Queen’s performance in the City Hall’s suitably grand Oval Hall is a must see, not only for fans of Queen’s legendary songbook of bombastic rock but for anyone who appreciates world class musicianship and thrilling stage entertainment. After an incredibly successful world tour in 2017 supporting his band’s most recent epic masterpiece, 'The Similitude of a Dream', Morse is now embarking on a rare, up close and personal solo acoustic tour spotlighting some of the music behind his new singersongwriter album, 'Life and Times'. This unique string of intimate performances will reveal even more about the man, his life and music. “I’ve come through a lot of difficult times and I’m in a fairly content place now,” he says. “You can feel that on some of the songs.” Much of the album was written on tour and has a reflective quality. One special song, 'He Died at Home', was inspired by the tragic news of the death of a friend’s roommate struggling with PTSD, along with a powerful article about a young soldier named William Busbee. Neal’s songs and stories reach well beyond the borders of a

successful progressive rock career, and will give the audience a special opportunity to really get to know the personal side of an artist who has been trotting around the globe for years as a member of multiple award-winning and chart-topping bands, including Transatlantic and Flying Colors. Don’t miss this rare, unique opportunity to see Morse in

a special, interactive setting where you’ll hear a different but equally powerful side of this artist’s musical heart.

JON McCLURE COMPLETES HIS HAND PICKED LEADMILL STAGE LINE-UP FOR TRAMLINES 2018 As Tramlines celebrates their 10th birthday party, they have introduced some all new festival features for 2018! This is exemplified by the brand new Leadmill Live Stage that features live music and comedians during the daytime and is exclusively curated by Jon McClure of Reverend and the Makers on the Sunday. Jon McClure, the charismatic frontman of local legends, Reverend and the Makers completes his curation of the Leadmill Stage on Sunday 22nd July with the addition of Spring King and Sophie and the Giants who will

join headliner Tom Grennan and Sheafs. Originating in Macclesfield, Spring King are a fourpiece art-pop-punk bank who shot to fame following their appearance at SXSW in 2015. After supporting the Kaiser Chiefs ‘Stay Together Tour’ in 2017 they have a host of festival appearances coming up in 2018 including a return performance at Tramlines after their appearance last year. Sophie and the Giants are a new band straight out of Sheffield, hotly tipped by the Rev for great things. Despite forming last year they have already made significant forays into the world of music

touring with Reverend and the Makers, The Rifles, Findlay and Yonaka. Their debut single ‘Monsters’ was released in April filled with roaring guitars and a fem-punk attitude from the lead singer Sophie Scott. Jon has also curated a side-splitting comedy line which up is headlined by local legend John Shuttleworth who will be showcasing his unshakeable faith in his own musical compositions which are patchy at best! Joining John will be Britain’s only ‘goth, lesbian, transsexual comedian’, Bethany Black with her uniquely dark humour. “I am very excited

to be bringing the best new music to tramlines for my stage curation. Stoked to be working with my friends at the Leadmill and also having Tom Grennan and Sophie and the Giants there will be ace as they are artists I have worked with previously. All the bands are ace. See u down the front!” – Jon McClure The Leadmill Stage is a completely new addition to Tramlines Festival. The Leadmill is Sheffield’s longest running live music venue and nightclub. Since opening in 1980 it has become a massively important fixture on the live music circuit, described by

Still in Australia, I’ve had a wander along one of the local creeks to see what was on offer. I took my Sonik Sports Magna travel rod with me, a lightweight four piece rod which fits easily inside a suitcase, a matching reel loaded with 30lb braid, and at the business end, a fluorocarbon leader on which a small crankbait was attached. Having been told in the nearby tackle shop that bream, mullet, and flathead (whatever they are) were a possibility, I fancied my chances of some lure action! I’ve got to be honest. I’m not that keen on pushing through the Australian countryside without really knowing what could be lurking within, so my footfalls were definitely measured as I approached the waters edge! I don’t particularly care for either snakes or spiders, specially those which are capable of delivering death, so I was certainly cautious and kept a close eye on my surroundings. There is nothing like impending doom to sharpen the mind! I’d been advised to explore the marginal shelf of the waterway, but after an hour of flicking out lures, varying the retrieve, changing the lure, I’d had a single follow from a fish about the same size as my tiny bait. “You won’t catch much in there mate”. A passerby explained that the waterway wasn’t particularly prolific, especially in winter, so despite seeing a few bigger fish, I chose to jump on the train and travel up to Wollongong harbour to try my luck there. I’d seen anglers fishing it earlier in the week, so fancied trying a different venue… I arrived at low tide, with the sea just starting to flood back in around the jetty and pilings. The jetty offered superb access to relatively deep water, but despite the depth, I could still see the seabed, and could watch fish flitting about beneath me. It’s a beautiful spot, with plenty of people passing who were all interested in the prospect of seeing fish, and as I cast my first lure, it was interesting to note a trio of pelicans alight on the pilings next to me; apparently their enthusiasm was as misplaced as mine! My casts with crankbaits saw no result, so a heavier jig head was attached, and a crayfish rubber lure threaded up the hook. I dropped it across the face of the jetty, watched it sink, and pulled it back towards me in a series of short hops. I immediately felt a sharp tug and struck into thin air before withdrawing the lure; both ‘pincers’ had gone, snatched off by quick biting fish with sharp teeth! The same thing happened to a second similar lure, the rubber destroyed quickly by aggressive, darting fish, with no chance of a hook up, so I changed to a shad, which I could bring in faster, hoping to increase my dismal strike rate. That didn’t work either, the shad was swiftly slaughtered with a series of crescent shaped lumps removed by the same attackers, the tail shredded, leaving a stump of rubber on the hook shank. I was certainly perplexed, I had only a minimum amount of kit with me to travel light and hadn’t thought that dropshot gear would be appropriate in Australia, but in hindsight, the method would have produced a ‘fish a chuck’ with smaller hooks and lures; at least I’ll know for next time! All was not lost though, I did delight in watching huge stingrays glide beneath me twice, gracefully moving over the ocean floor in search of titbits left by tourists… they are certainly impressive fish! Later in the week, I had another opportunity to get out to sea on my brother in law’s boat. We launched from a different area, sliding the boat off the trailer as the sun rose pink in

the sky, and quickly anchored off our first mark. Mick had bought some fresh squid, hoping for a snapper or two, and was delighted when a rattling bite produced his first ever snapper, which was quickly submerged in the onboard seawater tank to keep it fresh for the barbeque. A second one quickly followed, but as it was smaller it was quickly returned, then I caught my first snapper, a glorious pink hue on each flank matching the sunrise as we gently rode the ocean swells; blissful. An hour later, we’d managed to catch a few more colourful wrasse, but action had slowed and we decided to move. I reached into the bow to unhitch the anchor line but found solid resistance and just couldn’t lift the iron off the bottom! Mick tried too, the line quivering as the boat moved forward and the anchor remained well, anchored, and we had to resort to driving the boat over the anchor to chance the angle, but to no avail. We released the anchor line, drifted back and attempted to go around behind, but it didn’t matter what we did, it was firmly rooted, so the only option was to recover as much line as possible and cut it free; an expensive loss, but sadly unavoidable. Debating our options, we chose to try a few drifts to see what would happen as we bounced our baits over the kelpy bottom. As soon as we stopped the engine, the baits went over into almost one hundred feet of water, and the instant the reels stopped spinning, the rod tips were rattling with sharp tugs as the squid was engulfed by fish with wrasse particularly prolific. A change to smaller hooks saw more fish boated as the points struck home, and all were safely returned to the depths as the squid pile was speedily demolished by ravenous fish. It was great fun on warm seas with the sun shining, and we enjoyed a picnic lunch as a biplane performed loops overhead, before lowering the baits back over the side to enjoy more fish…what could be better? Eventually, the wind speed increased, as did the swell, and it became prudent to head into shallower, sheltered waters. In the lee of the Kiama blowhole (Google it) we fished a rocky shelf in just five metres of water, clear enough to see huge beds of kelp waving in the tide. My first bite here produced a small flathead, a squat headed beast that although supposedly good eating, certainly didn’t look that attractive, with a mouthful of sharp teeth and a murky brown colour, so it too was flicked back over the side to return to the depths. Mick caught one, then I caught another as the bites came thick and fast and a steady stream of ‘flatties’ were unhooked and released. Finally, tired by the fish catching frenzy, we thought it time to head back to land, and as the last boat to return, Mick dropped me on the jetty to reverse the trailer into the sea as he circled the boat in the clear harbour waters. With the boat on the trailer, hooked up, winched in and lashed down, a quick wash on the level ground above (a free boat wash was provided by the local authorities) and we were ready to go, my final Australian fishing trip at an end. My efforts from the shore had been pitiful in truth, but at sea, both Mick and I had enjoyed great sport, catching at least a dozen different species, and with our two snapper cleanly despatched (we didn’t need to take any more) we had enough for a tasty evening meal. They certainly do things differently Down Under, where fishing is about sport first and food second, but I have to say I’ve loved every second of it and can’t wait to return! Now, where’s my piggy bank?

WARNE’S ELATION AS MILLERS MAKE CHAMPIONSHIP RETURN

“It was really tough last season. The technical area is a lonely stand when things do not go your way and you are losing football matches. In the summer, I recruited players and personalities I wanted. I surrounded myself with really good people and tried to put a smile on people’s faces. We’ve had an amazing season and I’m immensely proud of what we’ve achieved.” At a red-hot Wembley, Wood gave the Millers an interval lead with a close range finish. Sheffield United Football Club are delighted to announce that manager Chris Wilder has signed an extension to his contract with the club by a further year. The extra 12 months now takes Chris’s contract with the club to the end of the 2020/21 season. Four members of the manager’s backroom staff - assistant manager Alan Knill, goalkeeping coach Darren Ward, first team assistant coach Matt Prestridge and head of recruitment Paul Mitchell - have also agreed to the same contract extension. Chris commented: “After lengthy discussions with both owners, I am delighted and proud to carry on leading Sheffield United Football Club forward in a positive manner, as we have previously shown in the last two seasons. “I’m confident we can concentrate fully on on-field issues, we are very much looking forward to pre-season and adding quality reinforcements to our squad in an attempt to build on our performance last season.” Co-owners, Kevin McCabe and Prince Abdullah, said in a joint statement: “We are delighted to bring this news to all Sheffield United fans. It comes after another very positive season for the Blades under Chris and we are confident it will be

welcomed by everyone with or associated with the club. “The improvement in the club’s performance since Chris took over as manager two seasons ago is clear. He has brought renewed energy and passion to Bramall Lane with supporters proud of the way the team approach each match. “We are both very pleased that Chris and his backroom team have agreed to extend their current contracts by a further year. While the past two seasons have been hugely enjoyable we can only focus on the future and that future includes Chris Wilder now having the extra year’s security to continue to build on his excellent work so far.” Chris led the club to promotion from League One in 2017 and guided to tenth in the Championship last season. He joined as manager in May 2016 and has been in charge for 103 games with the Blades winning 55 of them. The co-owners continue their discussions regarding the future ownership of the club and would like to state that Chris has unwavering support from them both and the board of directors.
