CENTRE SPREAD

EYE CATCHING IMAGES OF THE NEW DONCASTER CULTURAL AND LEARNING CENTRE REVEALED Fantastic new images of the Doncaster Cultural and Learning Centre have been revealed today. The centre, which will be on the junction of Waterdale and Chequer Road in the town centre, will be a new home for Doncaster Libraries and Heritage Doncaster. The plans see four existing buildings (Doncaster Central Library, Doncaster Archives in Balby, Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery, and the Library Services for Schools at Top Road, Barnby Dun) consolidated into one dynamic central hub that will inspire creativity,

informal learning, and innovation. This modern and iconic new build will retain and sympathetically restore the frontage of the former Hall Cross Girls School building, which will be encased in a glass façade to showcase an iconic part of Doncaster’s architectural heritage. The new images, which will be discussed by Cabinet on the 5 June, show a modern, light, airy building which is set over four floors. The building will be designed in a way that offers flexibility to allow it to be enjoyed by all residents, businesses and visitors to Doncaster. The new space will help

support the local and creative economy, by providing opportunities for young people, creatives, and small business owners to develop skills that help build a successful career. The striking building will also have the space and facilities to display exhibits which have been locked away from public view for years, including the famous Danum Shield and the Royal Borough Charters. Other features include an exciting new rail heritage centre showcasing memorabilia from the famous Hall Cross collection and the possibility to display two locomotive engines built

in Doncaster.

The new building will also become home to: • The children’s and adult lending libraries • The Museum and Art Gallery • Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry (KOYLI) • A high quality education space • A small and microbusiness start-up space • Training and conference facilities Cllr Nigel Ball, Cabinet Member for Culture, said: “The new Cultural and Learning Centre will be a beacon for showcasing our cultural heritage as well as sharing with the public art and museum

exhibitions from across the world. This building will be a step change for us and will help to meet our aspirations to deliver top quality and modern services and facilities. “The new Cultural and Learning Centre forms part of our Urban Centre Masterplan. Once this building has been completed we will be one step closer to fulfilling our vision for Doncaster as a great place to learn, live, do business, see great art and culture and a place for a growing creative industry. “It is really important to us that residents and businesses across Doncaster are involved in the development of this

building. That is why, in the coming weeks we will be planning a number of engagement events across the borough. This will be an opportunity for anyone who is interested to come along and learn more

about what will be in the building as well as share with us their thoughts on our plans.” If the designs for the building are approved by Cabinet it is envisaged that works on the site

will begin in September 2018 with an anticipated completion date of summer 2020. For further information about the plans visit: www.doncaster.gov.uk/ iconicbuild
