COMMUNITY FESTIVAL AND WEEK-LONG ROADSHOW INVITES DONCASTER RESIDENTS FOR A BREW AND A NATTER Local community services and charities will be on hand to support local residents as part of a weeklong tour of the borough starting on Saturday 16 June. It’s all part of the Your Life Doncaster Community Festival and Roadshow organised to showcase the fantastic community,
voluntary, faith and third sector groups and activities in Doncaster. The event is free to attend and the tea will be free flowing for everyone that stops for a natter. The week-long tour kicks off with a Community Festival on Saturday 16 June in Market Square in Doncaster town centre. It will feature numerous stands, displays and interactive events,
all designed to help residents find out about ways they can help themselves and their wider local community. Councillor Chris McGuinness, Doncaster Council Portfolio Holder for Communities, Voluntary Sector and the Environment, said: “With over 1,500 local groups and community services listed on the Your Life Doncaster website,
REGIONAL EDITION
the Roadshow is just a snapshot of the support that is available locally. “The Roadshow is a great opportunity for local residents to get out and meet contacts from some of the local services they may not realise are in place to help them stay well, safe and connected in Doncaster.” Following the Festival, the Roadshow will tour the borough and celebrate all things
community. It will offer members of the public an opportunity to speak to someone about their wellbeing and discover the fantastic local community services, charities and volunteering opportunities right on their doorstep.

SUPERHEROES TEAM UP TO RUN FOR CHARITY Last Saturday, 100 superheroes swarmed along the Sheffield Tinsley Canal Towpath to raise cash for the Dementia Revolution. They were all there: Superman, Batman, IronMan.... WonderWoman, the Avengers, Wolverine, Power Rangers and loads more besides. The event welcomed everybody of all ages and abilities, so
we had superheroes in wheelchairs, superheroes aged 5 as well as 85; superheroes who were blind, superheroes who were fighting all kinds of illnesses and personal battles, and at the finish line everybody got a bespoke medal, a celebratory glass of fizz or a bottle of beer, and a free family BBQ. The event was run in conjunction with the Canal &
River Trust, and raised around £500 for charity. It was such a huge success that the next event will be on 14th July: it’s the Comic Con/Cosplay Canter. 5km, 10km and half marathon distances: totally family friendly, wheelchair friendly, dog friendly route, with all proceeds going to benefit Breast Cancer, Ovarian Cancer & Prostate Cancer
charities. There are NO age, ability or time restrictions: absolutely everybody is welcome and
we also encourage donations to local food banks at the start line. It’s an awesome route, a totally friendly event, and a fabulous atmosphere, with something for everyone. Anyone is welcome to book at https://racebest.com/ races/xqqzu

ALBERT SNODGRASS Took the shell off my racing snail this weekend .... Thought it might speed him up.... If anything, it made him more sluggish. I gave my wife £200 and told her to go out on Thursday and leave me in peace to watch the World Cup. “I won’t need that much,” she laughed. “You will,” I said. “It’s got to last you five weeks.” I saw this advert in a window that said: “TV for sale, £1, volume stuck on full.” I thought, “I can’t turn that down.” I was just looking at my ceiling. Not sure if it’s the best ceiling in the world, but it’s definitely up there. I got caught smuggling twelve cases of Portuguese fortified wine in to the country.. Now I’m worried I might be de-ported. People always ask me why I’m single. I’m single by choice.. Unfortunately it’s not my choice. If only the good die young then what does that say about senior citizens? I’m not really a fan of jokes that use smutty innuendos, But I do try to slip one in occasionally. I’ve been thinking about selling my John Lennon memorabilia on eBay. Imagine all the PayPal.. A man was arrested for impersonating a helium balloon, Police held him for a while then let him go.
Yesterday evening I had to change a lightbulb, a bit later on I crossed the road. Then I walked into a bar.. My life is a joke.

Would you be interested in being supported in your stop smoking attempt by an experienced advisor and use either e-cigarettes or the NHS stop smoking services? Then contact us! GLASTONBURY BOSS AND BANDS TO HOST ‘JESSTIVAL’ FESTIVAL IN MEMORY OF MUSIC LOVING CANCER TEEN The parents of a festival loving teenager, Jess Fairclough, 18, who sadly lost her life to cancer in 2015, are fulfilling their dream of bringing together leading lights from the UK rock and folk scene for a fundraising festival in memory of their precious daughter. Glastonbury’s legendary John Peel stage manager, Jim Fox, is among those who have come on board to help organise the weekend bash entitled ‘Jesstival’, with Jess’ parents, friends, family, and staff from CLIC Sargent cancer charity and Teenage Cancer Trust, who supported Jess through her battle with cancer. Leading British folk singer Jay McAllister, front man of band ‘Beans on Toast’, an opening act at Glastonbury Festival every year, will headline the two-day ‘Jesstival’ music festival at Derbyshire’s Gresley Old Hall. And Jesstival will be held on what would ordinarily be the weekend of the Glastonbury music festival, 30 June – 1 July, a peak weekend in the calendar for music lovers. Liverpool born Jess Fairclough, who was treated at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, was just 18years-old when she sadly passed away in November 2015 due to a rare cancer, Rhabdomyosarcoma, a type of soft tissue sarcoma that grows in active muscles of the body. Music kept Jess going during the toughest of times throughout her treatment. Jess’ mum, Tracy Fairclough, aged 46, who lives in Liverpool said: “Music was
a massive part of our beautiful daughter Jess’ life, right up until the moment she died in November 2015. She played piano, guitar and was never without her ukulele. “In fact, before she got sick, she was setting up a band and she even recorded a song in hospital with the Alder Hey Blues ward band. “It was her CLIC Sargent social worker, Rachel, who first had the idea for ‘Jesstival’, when we were talking about what we would like to do to boost Jess – and ‘Jesstival’ was born right there! “We first came into the care of CLIC Sargent and the Teenage Cancer Trust teams at Alder Hey Children’s hospital. Our CLIC Sargent social worker, Rachel, was there for us right from the start - and after she died. She gave us amazing advice, got us funding to keep going financially and helped us with work situations. Our brave girl was incredibly strong, positive and brave throughout this - no tears or even anger.” Rob, a youth support co-ordinator for Teenage Cancer Trust, supported Jess and her family throughout Jess’ treatment. Mum, Tracy, continued: “Rob knew exactly when to pick his times to see Jess and always made her feel important. Rob quickly got to learn what made Jess tick and they had a lot of shared interests that he encouraged her to talk about. “I have never met someone who made my daughter laugh so much which is amazing given she was
on an extremely tough chemo regime”. “Jess was booked to go to Glastonbury during the final stages of her illness, and had really been looking forward to watching her two favorite artists, Death Cab for Cutie and Beans on Toast, but sadly she was too ill to make it on the day. “She was also looking forward to taking part in CLIC Sargent’s Music Programme, and thanks to Phil who runs it, he put us in touch with Jim Fox, manager of the John Peel stage. Thanks to this connection, just before Death Cab for Cutie appeared on the BBC, Jess’ face appeared on two massive screens at the side of the stage with the words ‘we wish you were here’. We watched it on TV from the hospital ward in the Alder Hey and it was a fantastic surprise for her. Tributes to Jess have been flooding in from bands, organisers and volunteers taking part in Jesstival. Jess’ parents, Tracy and Rod, wish to keep the memory of their daughter alive by hosting the first ever ‘Jesstival’ festival – and hope to raise vital funds for children and young people’s cancer support charities CLIC Sargent and Teenage Cancer Trust. CELEBRITY FIRST DANCE SONGS
Struggling to find your first dance song? You may have ‘your song’ but it may not suit a first dance, so look up to the stars at these celebrity first dance songs… Kimye (that’s Kim Kardashian and Kanye West) went for the very beautiful All of Me by John Legend on their wedding day. As you can imagine, there can be a few celebrity appearances at celebrity weddings, but one of our favourites is when Ed Sheeran sang Thinking Out Loud for Ronan and Storm Keating’s first dance. The sweetest couple in the world Giovanna and Tom Fletcher from McFly/McBusted danced to Easy by the Commodores. Their wedding was particularly special because of Tom’s amazing wedding speech which went viral as best celeb wedding speech of all time. Peter and Emily Andre married in 2015 to Eva Cassidy’s Songbird, while Michael Bublé and Luisana Lopilato danced to Dean Martin’s classic Everybody Loves Somebody. If you want royal, Prince Will and Kate Middleton danced to Ellie Goulding’s live performance of Your Song by Elton John. We hope this helps! Let us know your first dances if you’ve already picked!

BILLY PEARCE RETURNS TO YORKSHIRE WITH HUGE ADULT ONLY SHOW AT THE DONCASTER DOME National treasure, and without doubt one of Britain’s most talented and best loved comedians & performers, Billy Pearce emerged from the fertile talent fields of Butlins in the mid 1980’s. Multi Award winner Billy, has won just about every comedy award going, including a British comedy award, Solo comedian of the year, and Best television comedy newcomer at the London Palladium. This September Billy will be returning to his native Yorkshire with a live Aduly only show at the Doncaster Dome on Friday 21st September. Billy, who was born in Leeds, West Yorkshire, first came to National prominence when he appeared in Central TV’s top talent show ‘New Faces’, winning
his heat and qualifying for the final. His impact was immediate, and he was quickly snapped up for stage and TV appearances, culminating with his first series for BBC television, ‘You Gotta Be Joking’. In 1993, Billy was honoured to be chosen to host The Children’s Royal Variety Performance screened by the BBC. His success in this prestigious show can be judged by the fact that he was invited to appear on the same show a year later, which he then followed with a laughterfilled appearance on the Royal Variety Performance. In total, Billy has performed in Five children’s Royal Variety shows and Three Royal Variety shows. During the mid 1980’s and early 1990s, he appeared on TV shows such as Tonight at the
London Palladium, Through the Keyhole, Blankety Blank, Talking Telephone Numbers, and You Bet. There are few stages upon which Billy has not appeared. He’s broken Box Office records at a number of National Theatres including his Summer season at the Blackpool Grand Theatre, and his Christmas panto appearance at the Bradford Alhambra, where the Theatre took a bank busting £1.3 Million. BRADFORD pantomime legend Billy Pearce has been honoured with a ‘Pride of Yorkshire’ award. The much-loved star of the stage was presented with the surprise accolade at Welcome to Yorkshire’s Y18 tourism conference. Held at the Alhambra
Theatre, where Billy has been entertaining crowds for nearly two decades, there couldn’t have been a more fitting way to celebrate. He said he was “touched” by the gesture. “I’m very proud, it’s going on the mantle shelf in my snug, right in the middle, and every time I walk past it my heart will skip a beat because I’m so very honoured,” he said. “It’s so good to be flattered like that. I’m a proud Yorkshire man, so getting a Pride of Yorkshire Award is such a fantastic thing for me Billy even trod the boards of Musical Theatre appearing alongside Jimmy Osmond in the smash hit musical ‘Boogie Nights’. He followed this by having a stint as narrator in the ‘Rocky Horror Show’.
A fine actor, Billy has also appeared on numerous shows, including ITV’s ‘Heartbeat’ and the award-winning BBC drama ‘The Street’. In October 2013 Billy was presented with the Arts and Entertainment Award at the Yorkshire Awards at a prestigious ceremony at The Hilton Hotel, Leeds. Previous recipients of the award include The Grimethorpe Colliery Band, Clare Teal, The Kaiser Chiefs, Chris Moyles, John Godber and Gaynor Faye. Billy Pearce Live Doncaster Dome Friday 21st September Tickets priced £15 can be purchased online at www.dclt.co.uk or via the Box Office on 01302 537704 or 01302 370777

MERCURY M T RS HALF OF DRIVERS

UNAWARE OF NEW MOT RULES
RAC research suggests many motorists are in the dark about imminent changes to the MOT test – with over half still completely unaware of the reforms. The rule changes, which came into effect in May, sees the introduction of three new fault types. Two of them – ‘dangerous’ and ‘major’ – will result in a failed test, while the third – ‘minor’ – will result in a pass, with defects that need to be remedied as soon as possible. Yet 49% of motorists surveyed by the RAC think the ‘minor’ fault category would lead to an MOT fail, and 56% don’t even know about the changes. The RAC questioned 1,866 motorists about the forthcoming MOT shake-up, which it broadly supports as a “positive step”. As well as highlighting public confusion about the reforms, the survey makes clear that many motorists have concerns about their impact. Almost three-quarters of respondents (74%) believe the new ‘minor’ category will encourage drivers to ignore lesser faults in their vehicles. The same percentage of motorists (74%) think there’s a risk that the new fault categories could be interpreted differently by test centres across the country. And worryingly, 5% of drivers think that a vehicle with a ‘dangerous’ fault will pass the MOT following the changes.
DIY & HIRE SERVICES
RAC spokesman Simon Williams said: “It is important everyone quickly gets to grips with the changes to the MOT, and that test centres and garages do a good job of explaining the new fault categories so motorists understand correctly the severity of faults with their vehicles. “Changes to the MOT that make vehicles using our roads safer are undoubtedly a positive step so we hope that testers everywhere interpret and apply the new rules fairly and consistently. The last thing we want to see is a lowering of MOT standards and an increase in the number of unroadworthy vehicles on our roads.” The RAC survey found that 48% of respondents currently own or run a diesel car, and just over half of those (53%) say their vehicle has a DPF. But only 23% of respondents with a diesel car know that new DPFs generally cost over £1,000 – suggesting that many motorists are in for a shock if they are told they need a new one. Simon Williams of the RAC advises: “Drivers who have a diesel vehicle with a DPF should make sure it is regularly given a good run at motorway or dual carriageway speeds so the filter is automatically cleared of any clogged up soot. "This is very important if the vehicle is predominantly used for short journeys on local roads.”

FUNDING APPROVED FOR FILM AND TELEVISION STUDIO IN DONCASTER It’s a project that could bring the future of film and television to our region. And now grant funding for a new film and television studios, to be built on the site of the former High Melton campus of Doncaster College, has been agreed by the Sheffield City Region Combined Authority this week (Monday 11 June). At the first meeting to be chaired by the new Mayor of the Sheffield City Region, Dan Jarvis, CA members agreed that £4.1m of Local Growth Fund (LGF)
cash should go towards the project headed up by 360 Degrees Media. The scheme incorporates a film and TV studios, a visual effects production facility, a film and TV training academy and a hotel and events business. It is projected to create around 220 direct new jobs, and potentially thousands more in the supply chain, while driving more than £60m of GVA within SCR over the next 10 years. Mayor Dan Jarvis said: “A creative investment on this scale is fantastic news for Doncaster and the wider region, and will add to the Sheffield City Region’s already-outstanding creative assets. “As well as jobs at the 360 Degrees Media studios,

I’ve been out using my Deeper ™ sonar this week. “Real anglers don’t need it, it’s just cheating!” I hear you say? Whatever; it’s certainly got a place in my fishing, and here’s why. I’m time limited, I don’t get to camp out for days at a time, watching the water, or studying Facebook to see who is on the same lake and catching so I can poach their swim, nor do I fish the same water every time I go out. I hate the thought of thrashing the water to a foam with a marker float and lead, and more’s the point, I don’t have hours to do it either, preferring to have a quick chuck about with Deeper ™ to find exactly what I’m fishing over, and then let the swim settle. Ten minutes with a Deeper ™ rather than hours with a lead and marker, can save valuable fishing time, so I’m all for it, especially when I’m on a job for a client! Don’t take it the wrong way though, I’m not saying I’m right and you’re wrong, (angling shouldn’t be like that) I’m just saying that I’ve got another tool in the box when it comes to a tough session, and if you haven’t used one yet, then you may be pleasantly surprised when you do. I get that it might not be your cup of tea, and I fully respect that, but if you’re ‘on the fence’, then maybe I can sway your thoughts… Technology needn’t take the fun out of fishing; we all (the vast majority) use bite alarms at some point during our fishing, some use bait boats, underwater cameras, others use drones, and my point is, that things move on, technology and advancement can help us get more enjoyment from our fishing, and like you, I go fishing to catch fish, not try and appear ‘carpy’ by spending hours sitting by the lake catching nothing whilst telling all on social media that “…it’s a proper tough nut”. Well, make it easier then! No-one likes blanking, admittedly some can use it as a learning experience, but a pound to a penny, most anglers would much rather catch something, and Deeper ™ can make all the difference on those really tricky sessions. It’s not bias, it’s fact, and I really believe that…Although I use it predominantly to feature find, on occasions, when times are tough, I’ll use it to locate fish too, and recently, I had cause to do just that. This week. I’ve been back on the banks at a local club water, one which I would describe as ‘fish soup’ and one I return to when I need images for whichever client needs them at short notice… it’s a ‘banker’ water! On arriving at the car park, I found one of the bailiffs, Mick, unloading his car too. I like Mick, he’s a good chap, with a finger on the pulse at the fishery, and when he told me that it had been “… fishing c**p” then I knew I was on for a long day... We both left the car park together, walking down the path and watching the water; nothing showed. Normally, it’s like a jacuzzi, especially early in the morning, but not today, not a thing! Both perplexed, we settled into swims a few yards apart, and tackled up. I usually fish close in, under the rod tips, with either a method feeder packed with goodies, or a straight lead with a small wafter and tiny pva bag of boilies on the hook. Choosing the wafter option, I lowered the rig, shovelled in a load of Spotted Fin particle, and sat back to wait for the inevitable run. It came within five minutes, a chunky scraper double hitting the net, and then the rig was reset for the

next unlucky carp. Bang! The bobbin flew up and smashed against the rod blank, and another double figure fish soon lay on the mat; easy! Mick seemed less confident however; his rod tip hadn’t quivered, and within an hour, he moved swims, hoping to find the elusive fish… After an early hit, things went quiet in my swim too, with only odd fish slipping up over the next few hours. Normally, I expect a fish (or at least a run) every thirty minutes or so, with the culprit usually a carp of between 10-20lb, but for some reason, it just wasn’t happening. Another angler took Mick’s place nearby, and I watched as he scored with a quick hit of five fish, then his swim too went very quiet. Where were all the fish? It’s usual to catch close in during the early part of the day, with fish moving out into deeper water as the hours progressed, before returning to mop up match anglers cast off bait in the margins at around 4pm. I’d followed that pattern, chasing the chunks into open water at range, but aside from losing two fish, I hadn’t caught any more. Time for action! I rigged another rod, twinned with a big fixed spool reel loaded with 50lb braid, and tied on my Deeper ™ Pro+ before lowering it into the water to initiate the battery and connect the Deeper ™ to the app on my smartphone. Within seconds, the devices paired, and I cast out the sonar to about seventy yards. With the early Deeper ™ some anglers had perhaps suspected connectivity issues at long range, but with the Pro+; the team have really got the technology right now, and this model is effective to over one hundred metres, giving accurate real-time information to the angler instantly, and it’s so simple to use! I let the sonar stabilise and waited for the colourful screen to light up and show me exactly where the fish were… It didn’t… the area I’d been fishing was flat, and almost completely devoid of fish, which was unexpected to say the least, and I wasn’t sure why… The water level was down considerably, and the wind was coming from the north which is not ideal on this lake, but it didn’t usually have such an adverse effect on the inhabitants. The other angler wandered over to me to say that he too was struggling in his usual spots, so we both watched the screen as the sonar was slowly retrieved (every angler is interested!) and we watched the lake bed begin to climb up as the Deeper ™ passed over the marginal shelf, and there they were! A series of fish icons pinged into view as we noted the fish stacked up along the base of the shelf, and it became apparent that for some reason, whether shadow, water temperature, or undertow, they were hovering close in, not at range as expected! One or two casts with the device, and the secret was revealed! Changing tactics, we both caught fish almost immediately. Careful feeding kept fish in the swim, and by the end of the day, I’d picked off more than a dozen carp, almost all in double figures, to post a respectable tally, whilst my compatriot had equalled my score, and added a bonus barbel too. Did the Deeper ™ make a difference? Of course it did, we found fish within a minute, and dropped baits on them immediately to resume catching. One thing that Deeper ™ can’t do is make the fish take the bait; that bit is still down to you, but if you can’t find them, then you can’t catch them can you?
