CHANGES AFOOT AT DONCASTER AND MEXBOROUGH MARKET Doncaster markets are changing and the council are working hard to once again make them some of the best markets in the north of England. To do this, the council has already rejuvenating two Grade II listed buildings in Doncaster Market, namely the Corn Exchange and the Wool Market with capital funding of more than £7.3 million.
They now need to secure the best market management and retail leadership which will place the retail quarter amongst the top attractions in the area. To enable this change and to move forward, Cabinet have today agreed to run a procurement process to identify an operator to manage Doncaster and Mexborough Markets as well as its buildings. It is envisaged that this
will be a 25 year contract and lease. The procurement process will consider tenders from both national and international market providers to focus on the core business along with increasing the opportunity for raising further capital investment. A number of different proposals were considered before the options of bringing in an operator on a 25 year lease was put
REGIONAL EDITION
before Cabinet. Some of these include:
• The grant of a long lease of market estate of up to 90 years • Freehold disposal (sale of the estate) • Retention of inhouse operations • Letting a concession contract Cllr Joe Blackham, Cabinet Member for Highways, Street Scene and Traded Services, said: “Doncaster
and Mexborough markets are important to us and we want to see them thrive and prosper now and in years to come. To ensure that this happens we need to make sure that both markets are highly competitive and fully embrace the changing customer shopping trends. “We want these markets to be a place where entrepreneurs can innovate and experiment and get
their ideas off the ground. To give traders the freedom to diversify their product ranges helping to attract new visitors to the market. “We realise that some traders who are currently trading in both Doncaster and Mexborough market might feel a bit uneasy about the changes we are proposing. We would like to reassure them that we have considered all the
options and this is the one that we feel would secure the future of both markets and improve business activity going forward. “We will ensure that all traders are kept informed with the latest developments. We would also encourage the public to get behind the markets and come and visit to see some of the fantastic produce they have to offer.”
the service will be tendered out. • August 2018 - OJEU contract notice issued • August – December 2018 – Responses and negotiation period with prospective bidders • December 2018 – Cabinet approval and Contract award • January 2019 – Mobilisation of successful bidder • March 2019 – Implementation of new arrangements
If agreed by cabinet, the next steps will be: • June 2018 Publication of the Prior Information Notice (PIN) to advise potential relevant organisations that
A final decision about the proposed delivery model will be taken back to Cabinet again for approval following the completion of the procurement process.

SHEFFIELD RECEIVES FUNDING FOR ROUGH SLEEPING INITIATIVE Sheffield City Council is set to receive £363,000 this year to combat rough sleeping across the city. The news is welcomed in Sheffield as it will allow for more work to be done for rough sleepers who have been living on the streets on and off for a longer period of time. The funding means the council will be able to do more outreach work to prevent rough sleeping form
occurring, wherever possible. Money will be used to fund suitable housing for individual rough sleepers and to give them the support they need to be able to stay in that housing instead of becoming a rough sleeper again. This intensive housing support will be tailored to meet the needs of each individual rough sleeper, who most often have a variety of complex needs.
Individuals will be worked with for longer periods of time and the tailored help will mean that they will be more likely to remain housed. More emergency accommodation for those who find themselves in crisis will also be made available and options for longer term housing will be improved. All of this support will be provided by the council

working alongside other registered housing providers, the commissioned outreached team, voluntary services and private sector landlords. Councillor Jim Steinke, Cabinet Members for Neighbourhoods and Community Safety said: “We welcome this funding which will help us focus on preventing rough sleeping in Sheffield. Our main aim will
be to help people to sustain their independence. “Although we have a relatively low number of rough sleepers in the city, we recognise that those at risk of rough sleeping often have very complex personal circumstances. It’s our job to help and support them in the right way as much as possible so that it can help transform their lives into something much better than they might otherwise have hoped for. This is a welcome boost to funding to help us make a real difference this winter.”

ALBERT SNODGRASS My wife says she’s leaving me as she thinks I’m too obsessed with astronomy. What planet is she on? How to cook the correct amount of pasta: 1. Pour out how much you think you need. 2. Wrong. What do you call a nun in a wheelchair? Virgin Mobile. A clown has been sacked for turning up late for his job at the circus. He is suing for funfair dismissal. Doctor, Doctor.. what’s good for excessive wind? A kite. After my prostate examination the doctor left, then the nurse came in & whispered 3 words that no man wants to hear “Who was that?” The doctor recently diagnosed me with ‘70s Fever’. It flares up occasionally. Boy asks Grandad; Have you seen my pills, they were labelled LSD? Grandad replies; Sod the pills, have you seen the dragons in the kitchen?! I went to the doctor the other day and told him I get sick every time I get close to the airport. He thinks it might be terminal. A waitress screamed “Does anyone know CPR?” I shouted “Hell, I know the whole alphabet” Everyone laughed.. Well everyone except this one guy. Just seen a man slumped over a lawn mower crying his eyes out. He said he’ll be fine, he’s just going through a rough patch. Sat watching TV when the wife walked past and turned it off. After a few minutes staring at a blank screen. I thought... that’s not on!

SHEFFIELD 50+ - WHO ARE WE? HAPPY BIRTHDAY NHS! Sheffield 50+ is a voluntary group run by and for its members and open to everyone aged 50+ who lives or works in Sheffield. Our main purpose is to develop and promote a city which values the skills, experience, knowledge and capability of older people, and which is an Age Friendly city: a city for all ages. We believe in ‘active ageing’ by following the ‘five ways to wellbeing’ and actively promote its adoption across our city. As well as our individual members we also have links to another 10,000+ people through the Sheffield 50+ Network – a way for groups and organisations to affiliate to Sheffield 50+. This is why we work to promote our vision of Sheffield as a city where the contribution of everyone aged 50+ is valued and celebrated, where no-one is treated less well simply because of their age and where we are able to influence how our city runs. We over 50s have so much to offer – our experience and knowledge and much more. Sheffield needs us to be involved in local life and to remain as active as possible. Giving us Voices We represent our interests to the powers that be. We do this by: • Playing an active role in Sheffield City Council’s Age Hub, one of the Equality and Fairness hubs. • Running our own special interest groups, such as our public transport group and groups that meet in different areas of the city to look at and campaign on local issues • Asking our members to play an active role on forums and groups, such as DWELL http://dwell.group.shef.ac.uk Encouraging Active Ageing Active ageing is the process of optimising
opportunities for health, participation and security in order to enhance quality of life as people age (WHO). Sheffield 50+ promotes active ageing in all of our projects. We believe that by following the Five Ways to Wellbeing we will all have a better quality of life. The Five Ways to Wellbeing are: • Connect – Just talking and socialising can help us feel good. It could be family, friends, neighbours or colleagues • Be active – regular exercise makes us feel good, helps us keep in shape and can improve our health. Find ways of being active in your everyday life, little and often. • Take notice – looking around and being curious about the workld around us can be good for how we feel about ourselves. • Keep learning – learn a new skill or more about something you are interested in. It can be fun and helps you to meet new people and boost confidence. • Give – helping others is a brilliant way to help us feel better. Try giving someone a smile or thank you and see. Drink Wise, Age Well wants to create a healthier relationship with alcohol for adults over 50. It aims to prevent alcohol-related harm in people aged 50 and over through campaigning, education and learning, building resilience and delivering age- specific services and interventions. Drink Wise, Age Well is a BIG Lottery funded partnership which brings together specialist organisations already operating in the community. We are part of the reference group. Join us now, for together we are stronger!

There will lots of hands-on activities and demonstrations from healthcare organisations across the city, including stands focusing on Sheffield’s contribution the development of medical research and clinical trials. Drop-in anytime from 11am-7pm and help to celebrate this landmark occasion.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Why volunteer? Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, learn new skills, and support the work we do in the community. Who can volunteer? Almost anyone can be a volunteer. We have a wide range of roles which suit different people and different skills. How much time do I need to give? It depends on the volunteer role you are interested in. Could you regularly visit or telephone an older person at risk of social isolation? Could you take someone out for a coffee or for a short walk? You could make a huge difference to someone who is experiencing loneliness. Some people give an hour a week, other people do more. If you’d like any further details, just call us on (0114) 250 2850 or e-mail: virginia.lowes@ageuksheffield.org.uk Please note that, because we work with some vulnerable people, you should allow time for Disclosure and Barring Service checks and an induction programme before we will allow you to work with older people.

Tramlines Festival reveal yet more acts for their 10th anniversary with the best in upcoming talent and local music As Tramlines Festival looms ever nearer, the winners of the ‘Apply to Play’ scheme have been released. These bands have been hand picked from thousands of applicants by festival organisers and representatives from The Leadmill. We can exclusively reveal that Imi, Kadija Kamara, Little Grace, Polo, Saint Petersburg, The Golden Age of TV and Universal Tree are the final acts to be added to Tramlines this year. Local talent is a key part of the 10th anniversary of Sheffield’s homebrewed festival. Reverend and the Makers, Milburn, High Hazels, and Bang Bang Romeo are now joined by Universal Tree and St Petersburg for a full spectrum of Sheffield talent. Universal Tree is a brand new band fronted by legendary Sheffield vocalist Steve Edwards. Steve achieved bit hits in the dance scene with collaborations with Cassius and Axwell and was the frontman for Lords of the Flatbush, a collaboration with former Artic Monkey Andy Nicholson and Louis Carnall of Milburn. His new project draws influence from psychedelia, soul, funk and blaxploitation films and will be the perfect way to welcome in Sunday on the Main Stage.
Also repping Sheffield in this announcement are St Petersburg. Another recent formation (they were previously known as The Ratells), this group have some serious momentum, their first show sold out over 1,000 tickets in just 4 minutes, come and check them out on Friday afternoon to see what the fuss is about. As we venture a little further North, there’s a pair of Leeds based bands repping West Yorkshire. Polo have a unique ‘sexy indie electronica’ sound and won the hotly contested PRS ‘Women make Music’ grant. They are joined by The Golden Age of TV who’s ‘razor sharp and perfectly crafted alternative indiepop’ has already won support from Radio 1, 6 Music, Radio X and many more. Also hailing from Leeds is Imi, a female solo artist who mixes dark brooding synths her own soaring vocals described as ‘rich and luxurious’ by Electronic North. Did you feel overlooked London? Don’t worry, Tramlines has you covered! Kadija Kamara has a totally unique ‘alt soul’ sound that includes 60’s and 70’s analogue sounds. She has won the MTV Iggy Artist of the Week poll and been funded by PRS for Music. Her collaborations include Joey Negro and Zed Bias and she currently holds down a residency
at ‘The Finsbury’, a popular North London music venue. The final addition in our ‘Apply to Play’ acts is Little Grace. This trio have a modern yet nostalgic sound, merging Motown, 80’s synth pop and post-2000’s electronic R&B and have appeared on Robin Schulz’s LP, ‘Uncovered’. They will be appearing in the early afternoon at the Library Stage on Saturday. Year on year, Tramlines remains one of the largest and most popular inner-city music festivals in the country. Its new home – licensed for up to 40,000 people - is just 13 minutes from the city centre by tram meaning it remains as accessible as before. The larger space can accommodate even more music lovers and can offer a wider range of world class headliners as well as plenty of exciting emerging acts and lots of great entertainment for all the family to enjoy. Tickets for the 10th Tramlines Festival have been selling fast. They’re now on sixth release costing just £79 plus booking fee for a weekend ticket, covering all three days and are available from www.tramlines.org.uk. Keep an eye out for further lineup announcements by following Tramlines on social ‘@tramlines

THE SHAKEY IN HILLSBOROUGH RE-OPENS AFTER £120,000 REFURBISHMENT Possibly Hillsborough’s most prominent pub, The Shakey, has just re-opened after the major refurbishment by owners Greene King. Long-time manager Murphy says, “Our loyal regulars deserve this. The Shakey has always been a welcoming local but now the levels of comfort and décor have made it really inviting, and there are new disabled facilities.” Located at Bradfield Road, right on Hillsborough Corner, this local landmark is massively popular with locals and visitors alike, as it is right in the centre of the shopping area. You can pop in for a relaxing drink after shopping or in the evenings there is a full range of entertainment on offer. Throughout the Lounge, Snug and Beer Garden, there are now eight HDTV’s and of course all World Cup matches will be shown, as well as all racing channels. DJ’s appear every Friday and Saturday night and live music events are planned. AlongsideGreene King IPA, at just £1.99 a pint, a fantastic range of local and national cask ales can be found frequenting the bar. Carling is available from only £2.70 from Monday to Thursday, then £3.05 Friday to Sunday. New to the Shakey is a fantastic range of Gins that are as pleasing to the eye as they are to the palate; the staff has even undergone a special training course on creating a great choice of flavours.
New to The Shakey is The Greene King Season Ticket App available on all mobile devices. This new feature gives our customers many money saving offers during selected live sporting events including 10% off selected products! So, call in soon to The Shakey and
discover this welcoming and traditional local’s new levels of comfort. The Shakey 196 Bradfield Road Hillsborough Corner Sheffield S6 2BY Tel: 0114 234 3374

THE FRINGE AT TRAMLINES REVEALS MAIN STAGE LINE-UP As the 10th anniversary of Tramlines draws closer, details have been released of the city centre’s free outdoor events which form ‘The Fringe at Tramlines’, presented by Sheffield City Council and Sheffield Business Improvement District (BID). The Fringe at Tramlines takes place on 21 and 22 July with performances from local acts, global music, young artists, film screenings, and the University of Sheffield will bring theatre to the streets. Devonshire Green will play host to The Fringe Stage, a continuation of the events which previously took place in the Peace Gardens. On Saturday the line-up is curated by Sheffield global music enthusiast, Papa Al with a distinctly global flavour whilst on Sunday, Live Core Events bring a selection of young and hotly
tipped acts. Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “Tramlines weekend is one of the busiest in Sheffield’s calendar, so as the main festival moves to Hillsborough we’re thrilled to continue the festival vibe in the city centre for our residents, visitors and businesses. “This year’s free stage at Devonshire Green, promises an exciting line-up with a diverse range of musical performers from rappers and SKA bands to X Factor finalists and all female rock bands. The Fringe at Tramlines provides the perfect stage to highlight Sheffield’s brilliant local talent and give visiting acts the chance to experience the kind of warm welcome you’ll only find in Sheffield.” Diane Jarvis, Sheffield
BID manager, said: “The Fringe at Tramlines is showcasing Sheffield musicians and giving local, upcoming acts a platform to reach new audiences. With line-ups featuring bands which take inspiration from around the world, The Fringe is a celebration of Sheffield as a diverse, welcoming and vibrant city. “The Fringe will also give the city centre a festival feel and provide businesses with an opportunity to capitalise on thousands of music fans descending on the city centre.” Saturday’s line-up, brought to you by Papa Al, presents a host of local lively acts with a global influence and plenty of energy including Jungle Lion, Mango Rescue Team, Forefathers, Tixxy Bang and one of the Sheffield’s newest and liveliest crew, Captain Avery and The
Cosmic Triceratops of Intergalactic Peace. Papa Al said: “After nine great years in the Peace Gardens we’ve moved up to the dizzy heights of Devonshire Green. My Saturday programme will feature a mostly Sheffield based line-up with a distinctly global flavour. “Performing on the day will be rappers, dancers and some fantastic bands. There’s so much exciting music being created in Sheffield and it’s not just indie bands, I can’t wait to see the stage in full effect in July.” Sheffield based social enterprise Live Core Events (formerly Young Music) are providing the programming for Sunday. Their focus is on local talent and emerging bands from across the UK. Highlights include Holly Tandy (a 17 year old X-Factor finalist from Barnsley), Syteria (female fronted rock band), Caroline Francis and the Lights (Exposed Magazine’s best unsigned artist of 2017) and Kane’d (powerhouse
rock band fronted by Sisters Steph, Stacey and Chez). Also performing on Sunday is the aptly named Sundance, a local indie band fronted by Harry Walker, hotly tipped for big things. Natalie Beard, Managing Director of Live Core Events CIC, said: “Sunday’s line-up will focus on showcasing some of the UK’s best upcoming artists. With a mainly local line-up and a few favourites
from further afield there will be something for everyone. “It’s our first gig with Holly Tandy since before she entered the X Factor competition, so it’ll be great to have her back in Sheffield, along with Welsh rock band Kane’d, who we’ve been dying to bring back since they played here in 2014. Our local crowd loved them and we can’t wait for them and all the other acts to bring the noise.”
LINE-UP FOR THE FRINGE STAGE AT DEVONSHIRE GREEN Saturday acts Jungle Lion, Mango Rescue Team, Rogue Siesta, Lornah Stewart, Tixxy Bang, INK Dance, Forefathers, Romano Jilo Dancers, Captain Avery and the Cosmic Triceratops of Intergalactic Peace, J.Kas, Vain Dolls, Unscene, Dan Loops, Alfie Wright, Blue Street Brass, Angelina Dance Troupe Sunday acts Syteria, Kane’d, Fahran, Chayser, Caroline Francess & The Lights, Sundance, Lizzie Goddard, Harriet Rose Grant Timings will be updated on the Facebook event page and event website at www.sheffafter5.com/ thefringeattramlines - For stage times, official fringe venues and updates on The Fringe at Tramlines look out for the official programme published by Exposed Magazine, join the official Facebook event page and keep your eye on the event webpage at www.sheffafter5.com/ thefringeattramlines

FAST-TRACK YOUR CAREER INTO THE HEALTHCARE PROFESSION … WORK AS A PHLEBOTOMIST! An increasing demand for skilled healthcare professionals has led to a shortage of allied healthcare workers, especially phlebotomists - the skilled healthcare professionals who take your blood. Demand is at an all-time high with hospitals, clinics and GP Surgeries offering a golden opportunity for that “longed for” career change! If you have good people skills and manual dexterity, and like the idea of working in a busy healthcare environment, a phlebotomist job may be just the job for you! Many people enter this profession when they are looking for a career change or a fresh start and they often have no previous qualifications or experience in healthcare. Phlebotomists can work part time (usually mornings) but also may choose to work full time as well as weekends, holidays and bank work. Blood samples are usually collected before mid-day and then analysed in your local hospital’s Path Lab in the afternoon. “We train people from all walks of life and all ages” explains Lauren, Geopace office manager. “We’ve had school leavers, shop assistants, receptionists, beauticians and dental nurses, as well as telesales staff, unemployed and the retired who are looking for a challenge. We also have referrals from JobCentres, who can sometimes fund your course in full” says Lauren. Once you are on the healthcare career ladder there are often opportunities to progress into other areas, such as working in the hospital path lab or other departments. Promotion is much easier once you are “on the ladder” and have some experience behind you. Many Geopace students are now working as phlebotomists throughout the UK and a few have even chosen to work abroad where there is often a similar shortage and growing demand for this specialised skill. An interesting booklet featuring student’s “Success Stories” is written by the student’s themselves and looks at how they have
made the move from wide and varied backgrounds to find themselves now working as phlebotomists. A copy can be downloaded from the Geopace website’s testimonials page. If you like the idea of a challenging career in healthcare and particularly in phlebotomy then this may be the perfect move for you! The comprehensive training course last a full two days and culminates in the award of a nationally recognised and accredited certificate. “We practice taking blood from artificial arms”, says Lauren “and everyone on our course has a lot of fun! We get a great deal of satisfaction later on when we hear from our students that they are working for their local GP surgery or in their local hospital.” If you would like to know more about phlebotomy as a career or to book a place on the course visit Geopace Training’s website at www.geopace.com
