DONCASTER PREPARES FOR BIG ARMED FORCES DAY CELEBRATIONS
Doncaster residents will be able to show their support for the men and women of the armed forces community with a day of celebrations on Saturday 30 June. The day will begin with a military parade to honour serving troops, veterans, families and cadets starting from Sir Nigel Gresley Square at 11am. Travelling through the town centre, the parade will pass the Grade I listed
Mansion House before ending at Doncaster Market Square. Streets will be decorated throughout the parade route to commemorate not only the 100 years since the end of the First World War but also the formation of the RAF. To continue the celebrations into the afternoon, Market Square will be transformed for the day into a huge 1940s street party evoking memories of the war
years. A live stage will provide fun for the whole family immediately after the parade; including a swing band, vocalists and entertainers. There’ll also be plenty of refreshments, stalls and exhibits available around Market Square. Visitors are being encouraged to really enter into the spirit by dressing in the style of the period to create a great spectacle for the day. Deputy Mayor
Cllr Glyn Jones said “Doncaster is incredibly proud of its armed forces community and the sacrifices made for our continued freedom. Armed Forces Day is a chance for us all to recognise and show our appreciation to those brave service men and women from across the borough. “I’m sure the people of Doncaster will turn out in great numbers to show their support during the military
parade; both at Sir Nigel Gresley Square and all the way along the route. The street party at Market Square also promises to provide a great atmosphere throughout the afternoon and I hope people take the chance to get involved.” For more details on Armed Forces Day 2018 go to www. doncaster.gov.uk/ armedforcesday

SHEFFIELD FREE WIFI SERVICE LAUNCHES IN THE CITY CENTRE Sheffield BID, Sheffield City Council and Idaq Networks Ltd have announced the launch of free, high-speed Wi-Fi in Sheffield city centre. Sheffield Free Wi-Fi will help Sheffield become one of the UK’s most connected cities and bridge the digital gap, helping those without access to the internet to get online. With Sheffield Free Wi-Fi now live, a number of projects which rely on an internet connection, can
now begin. Part of plans to encourage visitors, residents and employees to increase the amount of time they spend in the city centre, the network will make it easier for visitors to access real time information about the city centre, which in turn will drive footfall and support the high street’s economy. The BID believes Sheffield Free Wi-Fi is highly valuable to the city centre, and lays the foundation to develop
further digital projects to improve visitor experience in Sheffield. Sheffield Free Wi-Fi is provided by Idaq, which has installed ultrafast broadband equipment to council-owned street lights and street furniture. Idaq will also use the network to provide a range of exciting cutting edge ultrafast broadband products and services to the residents and businesses of Sheffield city centre. The service will comply with the new
General Data Protection Regulations giving users complete control over their personal data. Users can be confident that personally identifiable data needed to provide the service, will not be sold to third parties. It will be rolled out in four stages between June and November 2018. Phase One will be the Theatre District/ Retail Zone, including Fargate, The Moor, Tudor Square, Peace Gardens, and Pinstone Street and will go live
from Wednesday 20 June 2018. The Entertainment Zone, featuring West Street, Division Street and Wellington Street will go live in July, whilst the Arrivals Zone, which covers the areas around the city centre’s main transport exchanges will go live by the end of September, and the final stage, the Cultural Industries and Devonshire Quarter, will be live by the end of November. STRINGFELLOW’S KING MOJO SET TO LIVE ON IN FORTHCOMING BOOK
Fans of Sheffield’s legendary King Mojo are being asked to help create a final and lasting legacy to the venue following the death of Peter Stringfellow earlier this month. The teenage club – which was opened in 1964 by the city-born entrepreneur and his brother, Geoff, who also died recently – attracted musicians that went onto conquer the world. Names like Stevie Wonder, Ike & Tina Turner, Jimi Hendrix, The Who and Pink Floyd all played early gigs at the venue that used to reside at 555, Pitsmoor Road. Arguably the venue’s biggest claim to fame
was introducing the Small Faces to the audience that set them on the road to fame. The band were originally booked to perform at a nearby Working Men's Club but they were kicked out after a couple of numbers. The King Mojo mod audience thought they were manna from heaven and the rest, as they say, is history. Sheffield author Neil Anderson is planning to publish a special ‘King Mojo edition’ of his best selling Dirty Stop Out series in the autumn as a tribute to Peter and Geoff Stringfellow. He said: “Few clubs anywhere created memories like King Mojo and I think it’s an important thing to celebrate. The contribution Peter and Geoff made to popular culture in the era was quite incredible.” A strictly limited number of numbered, King Mojo special editions are being made available in advance of the book coming out in the autumn.

Are you a current smoker who wishes to stop smoking? Would you be interested in being supported in your stop smoking attempt by an experienced advisor and use either e-cigarettes or the NHS stop smoking services? Then contact us! Sheffield Hallam University is undertaking an ethically-approved study, funded by Heart Research UK that will explore the effects of e-cigarettes on the arteries and small veins in people making a stop-smoking attempt. All participants will be randomly allocated to one of the three study groups. In the first group, participants will receive free nicotine-rich e-cigarettes and refills for a 3-month period as well as advice on how to successfully stop smoking. In the second group, participants will receive similar advice as well as complimentary, nicotinefree e-cigarettes and refills for a 3-month period. Finally, in the third group of participants will be referred to the NHS stop smoking services and will be reimbursed by the research team for their stop smoking prescription expenses (or will receive £30 of Love2Shop vouchers if they don't pay for prescription costs). Participation in the study will be free and assessments will take place in Collegiate Hall in Collegiate Crescent Campus of Sheffield Hallam University. AGE UK’S TIPS FOR HOT WEATHER Age UK offers a range of free information and advice designed to help older people live well during the summer months and protect themselves when the temperature soars. Here are the Charity’s top tips staying cool and well in the warmer weather: 1. Stay inside during the hottest time of the day – late morning to mid-afternoon. If you do go out use sunscreen of factor 15 or above, wear a hat and stay in the shade if possible. 2. When inside, try to keep your house cool. Keep curtains and blinds closed in rooms that catch the sun. 3. Avoid or limit strenuous activities like housework and gardening – try to do these activities when it’s cooler in the early morning or evening. 4. When travelling always carry a bottle of water and drink lots of fluid even if you aren’t thirsty. Limit drinks with caffeine and avoid alcohol as it can make dehydration worse. 5. Watch what you eat. Follow these tips to help you eat well during the warmer months Eat normally but try to have more cold foods, particularly salads and fruits as they contain a lot of water. Also be careful when eating outside. Whilst alfresco dining can be one of the best things about summer, hot weather causes bacteria to multiply quickly and increases our risk of food poisoning. Avoid this by • bringing chilled food home quickly from the shops and putting it straight in the fridge when you get home • making sure you don’t have food sitting in the sun for long periods, and storing it in the fridge when you can • Be careful when barbequing. We all enjoy a barbeque in the sun, but it’s actually a riskier way to cook meat. Before eating meat such as chicken, pork, burgers, sausages and kebabs from a barbeque make sure it’s piping hot and cooked all the way through, with no pink meat inside. There is no need to wash raw meat before cooking it and always wash your hands after touching it. 6. Choose the right clothes. It may sound obvious, but light-coloured, loose cotton clothing can help you stay cool in the heat. Dark colours absorb the light and can make you feel even warmer. 7. Think about your feet. Allowing your feet to breathe is important when the weather is hot so wearing open toe sandals is an excellent way to stop your feet getting sweaty and smelly. Avoid flip flops, which can be hard to walk in and opt for sandals which support your feet. Sandals that fasten with Velcro or adjustable straps are a good
idea if your feet swell up in the heat. 8. Cool off with water. Remember to take cooler baths or showers. Try splashing your face with cool water or placing a damp cloth on the back of your neck. 9. Check for weather forecasts and temperature warnings on TV, radio and online at www.metoffice.gov.uk 10. If you live alone, ask a relative or friend to visit or phone to check that you are not having difficulties during periods of extreme heat. It’s important to be aware of friends and neighbours during a heat wave and to let people know if you are on your own and have any concerns. Heat stroke is a lifethreatening condition and can develop if heat exhaustion is left untreated. People looking for advice can call Age UK’s free Advice Line, 365 days a year from 8am 7pm on 0800 169 6565, or visit www.ageuk.org.uk Caroline Abrahams, Age UK’s Charity Director said, “With temperatures expected to rise across the UK this week, it’s extremely important that older people take sensible precautions. The hot weather can be challenging for many older people, who can be particularly susceptible to heat-related illness. Our bodies are less able to cope with hot weather as we get older so we advise remaining indoors during the worst of the heat, wearing light clothing and drinking plenty of fluids. One thing that is easy to overlook is that older people should continue to eat well during heatwaves, to ensure their body replaces the salt lost through sweat. It can also be helpful to have more cold foods, particularly salads and fruits which contain water. During successive hot days it is important that older people are able to cool down in the evening and at night, so we advise keeping homes shaded and well ventilated. Anyone with an older family member or neighbour can help by calling in to check to see if they are ok and if they need help in taking reasonable precautions to stay well in the hot weather.” Age UK’s free guide, ‘Staying cool in a heatwave’, offers helpful advice on how to protect yourself from the heat, heat-related illnesses and what to do when someone shows signs of it. Other guides include ‘Healthy living’, which is packed full of tips and advice to help maintain a healthy body and mind. For a free copy of a guide call Age UK Advice free on 0800 169 6565 or visit www.ageuk.org.uk/publications to view and download.
have organised demonstrations at the Fayre to show people how easy the defibrillator is to use. SADS UK works with schools and highlights the fact that as schools are a major hub in the community they should have defibrillators in place to save lives. Using CPR alone provides a 5% chance of survival but early use of the defibrillator as well increases the chance of survival to over 50%; this is why SADS UK and its members are so passionate about putting this lifesaving equipment in schools and the community” The SADS UK Big Shock Campaign to legislate to make defibrillators available in all schools and widely in the community has the support of the ambulance services, the charity’s Patron Dr Hilary Jones and Dame Helen Mirren who heads the charity’s defibrillator leaflet. After meeting with policymakers, SADS UK is pleased that the Department for Education is advising schools to consider the defibrillator as part of their first aid equipment. This gives the Big Shock Campaign for legislating for defibrillators in all schools an enormous boost. Defibrillators in schools will save young lives. If you would like further information about funding research into SADS or placing a defibrillator in your community please contact Anne Jolly, SADS UK on 01277 811215, email, info@sadsuk.org web www.sadsuk.org
TALKING ABOUT DEATH
Dear Editor, I am writing to tell you and your readers about a new campaign from Independent Age, the older people’s charity, called ‘We need to talk about death’. Many people struggle to talk about death and final wishes, and we think it would be helpful if everyone could be more open and share their final wishes earlier, so their later years can be filled with positivity, rather than awkward conversations. Death is an incredibly emotive topic and unsurprisingly, people don’t always know how to broach the subject. The older you get, the more aware you become of death and, according to our recent research, older people do want to talk about death, but their adult children often feel uncomfortable about it. As a nation, we need to start embracing these conversations and promote a positive change in how we perceive and talk about this subject, and we want residents of Yorkshire and the Humber to join us. If you would like to arrange to speak to someone about planning for the end of life or the practical side of coping with a bereavement, you can call our free helpline on 0800 319 6789. Yours sincerely, Janet Morrison Chief Executive of Independent Age

GENRE-TWISTING PORTICO QUARTET SET TO APPEAR IN THE FOLK FOREST AT TRAMLINES Portico Quartet has always been an impossible band to pin down, but they will be making an appearance in The Folk Forest during this year’s Tramlines Weekend, playing on Saturday 21st July. Sending out echoes of jazz, electronica, ambient music and minimalism, the group have created their own singular sound. And while their new music mixes dense layers and textures with electronic and acoustic instruments the sound remains uniquely, recognisably their own. In 2017 they released their fourth studio album in a decade, Art in the Age of Automation, on Gondwana Records. Released to a chorus of acclaim, the album marked a triumphant return for the Quartet after a brief hiatus as the three-piece, Portico, and marked a welcome return to the stage for the foursome with sold-out shows across Europe including the Roundhouse, London earlier this year. Untitled (AITAOA #2) was largely recorded at the same sessions as Art in the Age of Automation at Fish Factory Studios in London and Portico Quartet’s own studio in East London. Like it’s predecessor, the album was mixed at Voxton
in Berlin. It is intended as a companion piece to last year’s AITAOA. But works equally as well as a stand-alone album and explores similar areas of enigmatic, widescreen minimalism alongside the more hard-hitting sounds that have become a notable part of their live shows. There is no lessening of quality here, album opener, Double Space, Index, View From A Satellite and Berlin were all originally slated for AITAOA, before being held back as the band’s vision of that album came into sharper focus. The insistent groove of Unrest and cinematic beauty of Celestial Wife were
enhanced with further recording sessions till the band felt they were complete. The artwork is by Duncan Bellamy for Veil Projects. “During 2016 we embarked on writing Art in the Age of Automation, and it ended up being an incredibly fertile period for us. We wrote a lot of music - too much - but ultimately decided to record it all during recording sessions in December 2016/January 2017. After releasing AITAOA we still had a lot of music leftover… music that could easily have made it onto the album. The more we listened to these tracks the more we wanted to share it, so we set about crafting it into something worthy of release. We’re really excited to share the results!.” Duncan Bellamy This then is, Untitled, Art in the Age of Automation #2. Enjoy! Tickets available from www.thefolkforest.net/

FREE FIRST BUS OFFER FOR SHEFFIELD’S ARMED FORCES DAY Sheffield City Council has joined forces with First Buses to offer free bus travel for veterans and serving personnel on an important date in the city’s commemoration calendar. People who show their military ID or veterans’ badge on Armed Forces Day this Saturday will get free travel on all First buses. They can join the Deputy Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Cllr Tony Downing alongside Sheffield Armed Forces and Veterans to celebrate with a series of activities. This year’s Armed Forces Day starts in the Peace Gardens at 11am with a veterans parade and ceremony. The Ashby Big Band and Lorrie Brown will transport people back in time with her award winning performances as Dame Vera Lynn and Marie Lloyd. Armed Forces and Veterans Day honours the outstanding contribution made by current members of the armed forces and by veterans of all ages. The day is an opportunity for us all to join together to pay tribute to our armed forces past, present and future. This year’s event marks the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One and the formation of the Royal Air Force and provides a poignant opportunity to commemorate the service and sacrifice of those who lost or risked their lives, to reflect upon the human cost of conflict and to have hope for a more peaceful world. GET INTO SOMETHING GOOD - WIN TICKETS TOP SEE THE LEGENDARY BRIAN WILSON LIVE AT DONCASTER RACECOURSE The Beach Boys legend Brian Wilson is returning to the UK to perform some of his greatest hits at Doncaster Racecourse, live after an afternoon of racing on Saturday 18th August. The show will include selected songs from iconic album Pet Sounds - his top hits and fan favourites spanning his 54-year career with The Beach Boys and as a solo artist. Wilson is known as the writer of one of the world’s greatest ever albums, Pet Sounds, which has maintained a long time position as one of the most influential albums in popular music. In 2017 Wilson embarked on The Pet Sounds Anniversary World Tour which traveled to more than 24 countries for 180 performances but
he began his career as a teenager, being a co founding member of The Beach Boys, who signed with Capitol Records in July 1962 and released their first album, Surfin’ Safari. The band’s initial surf-rock focus was soon broadened to include other themes. Wilson’s innovative vocal and instrumental arrangements for major hits, including “I Get Around,” “California Girls,” “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” “God Only Knows,” and the No. 1 smash “Good Vibrations,” established The Beach Boys as America’s preeminent band of the 1960s. Wilson has also achieved great success as a solo artist with 11 of his own albums released to-date, including his critically acclaimed 2004 album, he first began recording
in the ‘60s, Brian Wilson Presents…SMiLE. The album earned Wilson his first Grammy for a recording, which was followed by his second Grammy win for producing The Beach Boys’ acclaimed 2011 release, The SMiLE Sessions. With his own band, Wilson has performed major, sold-out tours in recent years, and with The Beach Boys he celebrated the iconic band’s 50th anniversary in 2012 with a major international tour and acclaimed studio album, That’s Why God Made The Radio. In 2015, Wilson released his latest solo album No Pier Pressure and was the subject of the critically-acclaimed, award-winning biopic Love & Mercy. Directed by Bill Pohlad and starring John
Cusack, Paul Dano, Elizabeth Banks and Paul Giamatti, Love & Mercy presents an unconventional portrait of the music legend. Set against the era-defining catalog of the music, the film intimately examines the personal voyage and ultimate salvation of the iconic performer whose success came at an extraordinary personal cost. The culmination of these projects produced Wilson’s first Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Song (Motion Picture) for “One Kind Of Love”, which was featured in the film. Brian Wilson is a Kennedy Center Honors recipient, a Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee, and a U.K. Music Hall of Fame inductee. As a member of The Beach Boys, Wilson was
inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1988, and honored with The Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001.
