A RICH SEAM EXHIBITION LAUNCHES FUNDING BID FOR A MINING STATUE FOR DONCASTER
Exciting ideas for a mining statue for Doncaster will be unveiled in a new exhibition at the Frenchgate Centre (Unit 78 on the ground floor) from Monday 9th July – 4 August 2018. A Rich Seam will exhibit the developing ideas of acclaimed international artist/ sculptor Laurence Edwards who has been commissioned to design an iconic piece of art drawing on the fascinating stories of our former miners and
their families. When finished, it will be located in the Waterdale area, easily accessible to Doncaster residents. The proposed art piece will celebrate Doncaster’s proud mining history and to help shape his designs, Laurence has met with hundreds of local people. The meetings have extra significance as Laurence has sculpted the portraits of people from mining communities in wax while they have told their stories. These will be cast in bronze and be
a part of the figurative, bronze mining statue. A Rich Seam will be an opportunity to also learn more about Laurence’s work and the journey of this exciting project. There will be chance to view a 10ft mock-up of the proposed design and some of the bronze heads will also be on display, as well as photographic portraits of the miners and their families. Students at Doncaster College have documented the project, creating a series of portraits and videos which will be
used as promotion and archival material for further exhibitions/ publications. Mayor Ros Jones said: “As a daughter of a Doncaster miner, I am incredibly passionate and proud of our mining heritage. This is about our legacy – we want to celebrate our mining history by creating a flagship piece of art which recognises all of our mining communities located in the centre of Doncaster. “The iconic piece of art will commemorate our past but also look
forward to the future capturing the hearts and imaginations of generations to come. “We also want to bring more public art to the town centre. This is a great way of complementing our regeneration plans, helping to further boost the town centre as a vibrant place to visit and explore. “This will be an outstanding piece of art for Doncaster for everyone to enjoy.” Cllr Nigel Ball, Cabinet Member for Leisure, said: “The exhibition
A Rich Seam will not only give people a fascinating insight into Laurence’s work so far but it’s an opportunity to get a glimpse of how the finished statue will look – and I’m sure visitors will agree once they see it, it really is quite impressive. “Our ambition is to locate the iconic piece of art right in the heart of Doncaster – a celebration of our mining history and the huge spirit of our miners and their communities. “The exhibition will
also mark the start of our crowd funding campaign which gives us four months to raise funds for the sculpture. We’re calling on everyone’s support to make the statue a reality.” Sculptor Laurence Edwards said: “It’s been an extraordinary journey so far, I’m very excited about presenting my ideas to the people of Doncaster. The evolution of ideas will be on display in Frenchgate, 18 bronze portraits, a 5 metre wall of drawings and a giant
10ft rock together with films and photographic portraits. I have learnt so much and am looking forward to the feedback.” A Rich Seam exhibition will be open from 9th July to 4th August, 10am – 4pm (closed Sundays) in Unit 78, Ground Floor, Frenchgate Shopping Centre, Doncaster. The exhibition also marks the launch of a Spacehive crowd funding campaign to raise £130,000 to meet the cost of the statue.

NATIONAL GAMES AGENCY ANNOUNCES SHEFFIELD’S CASTLEGATE AREA AS ITS NEW HQ The BGI, the new national agency for games modelled on the British Film Institute, is opening its national headquarters at the Sheffield Kollider, a new hub for creative and technology industries currently being developed in the stylish former Co-op Castle House in Castlegate, the historic heart of Sheffield. The Kollider building is being renovated with DCMS funding as part of a wider push by Sheffield to create a new cluster for high growth industries in Castlegate and the
wider City. The BGI is one of the first arrivals from a range of creative, technology and biotech businesses expected to locate in Kollider over the next 12 months. BGI will also move the National Videogame Arcade from its current home to the new premises. BGI will maintain an educational and research facility in Nottingham, where it will also run the GameCity festival later in 2018. The NVA will close to the public in Nottingham in mid-September, before opening again in Sheffield in late October 2018.
The NVA is the country’s only playable museum, and the first ever permanent cultural centre for videogames. A unique visitor attraction which welcomes over 50,000 visitors per annum to learn about games culture and development, it enjoys a 90% average rating on TripAdvisor. The NVA’s work with the public on videogame culture has been recognised globally and its first book was published earlier this year. Education and outreach is particularly important to the NVA, welcoming hundreds of school visits

every year. The video games sector is worth £1.5bn a year to the UK domestic economy. 16,000 developers make games professionally in the UK today for a global market worth over $110bn per annum. The UK games development workforce has been growing at 7% each year since 2012. Only 22% of the sector’s workforce is based in London and it is a textbook export-driven knowledge economy industry with a 40 year track heritage of leading the world, including the creation of the bestselling entertainment
product of all time, Grand Theft Auto V. The BGI is a new national games agency. It is an industry-led initiative that was announced in January 2016 to win new funding for cultural games production, games as culture projects and games production and commercialisation skills. Following lengthy consultation with over 120 games, arts, investment and educational stakeholders, it proposed its programme to government in September 2017.

ALBERT SNODGRASS I burnt my Hawaiian pizza last night. I should have put it on aloha setting. I went to the zoo yesterday and saw a baguette in a cage. The zoo keeper told me it was bread in captivity. As a kid I was made to walk the plank. We couldn’t afford a dog. I went into a library and asked if they had any books about paranoia. The librarian said “They’re right behind you!” I stopped a bloke in the street and said, “Can you help me? I’m looking for a rubbish tip.” He replied, “Spain to win the World Cup.” I need to re-home a dog. It’s a small terrier, and tends to bark a lot. If you’re interested, let me know and I’ll jump over next door’s fence and get it for you. The inventor of the throat lozenges has died today. They’ll be no coffin at his funeral. All my German friends have blocked me since Germany’s exit from the World Cup ! My phone is now completely Hans Free. Have you been hit with a rhythm stick? You may be entitled to personal Ian Dury compensation. I found a wallet today, and as a good Christian I thought... ‘What would Jesus do?’ So I turned it into wine. 6.30pm is the best time on the clock, hands down. I used to work in a shoe recycling shop. It was sole destroying. I bought my wife a rocket for her birthday. She’s over the moon! My friend asked me how long I’d been chopping wood for. I told him I’d have to check my logs.

HILLSBOROUGH EXCHANGE SHOPPING CENTRE PLANS MAJOR REFURBISHMENT
Highly popular centre in the heart of Hillsborough already includes large branches of Wilko, Boots and Home Bargains, in addition to many local independent retailers who provide everything from shoe repairs to rugs, and from holidays to vaping products. All will stay open during the expansion. The new plans will look to refurbish the existing shopping centre, providing larger, enhanced retail spaces, along with 78 new high-quality homes on the upper floors. The large rooftop car park will remain largely unaffected after the revamp. Developer Killultagh Estates’ proposals aim to “future-proof” the centre, maintaining Hillsborough Exchange’s position as a community hub, and ensuring the centre meets the needs of modern retailers. Killultagh estimate that
around 240 new jobs will be created through these proposals. A Killultagh spokesperson said: “Hillsborough Exchange Shopping Centre has been serving the people of Hillsborough since 1988. In those 30 years, the centre has changed very little and investment is now required to enhance and future-
proof the centre. We are proposing these plans so that evolving needs of consumers and retailers and the growing demands for high-quality affordable rented housing in the area can be met. “We believe the rejuvenated shopping centre will reinvigorate Hillsborough Exchange as a hub of the community to live, meet and shop.”

As well as the main The Fringe at Tramlines areas, bars and music venues across the city are signing up to be a part of The Fringe at Tramlines, each curating their own line-ups of artists and musicians over the weekend. Councillor Mary Lea said: “We’ve developed a brilliant entertainment programme that continues the festival vibe

5 THINGS DENTISTS WANT YOU TO KNOW ABOUT BRUSHING It’s not just what you brush with, but how you brush your teeth that counts.Even though we do it twice a day, every day, when it comes to brushing our teeth, it turns out there might still be some pretty important things we’re just not getting right. Here’s what you need to know to ensure your oral health doesn’t take a back seat: 1. Electric toothbrushes are only more effective than a manual if you use it properly. Studies have shown that electric brushes with rotating heads can provide a slightly
more effective clean, but there’s absolutely no reason why you can’t achieve the same results with a manual toothbrush if you have the right technique. Dentists recommend tilting the bristle tips to a 45-degree angle against the gum line. Move the brush in small circular movements, several times, on all the surfaces (outer, inside, upper and lower) of every tooth. 2. Natural sugar isn’t necessarily better than processed Every time we have something sugary to eat or drink, bacteria in our mouths feed on this sugar and produce harmful
acids, which can cause tooth decay. It then takes our saliva around an hour to neutralise these acids and return our mouths to normal. This means the more times a day you expose your teeth to sugar, the more you increase your chances of tooth decay. 3.Your mouth can be the gateway to a host of other, more serious health ailments Oral health is linked to diseases including dementia, kidney problems and diabetes. Although a dry mouth can often be down to simple dehydration, a lack of saliva can actually be one of the earliest symptoms of diabetes. 4. The toothpaste you choose should contain photography competition to run alongside, the right amount of fluoride for you, as this to get people thinking about the issue of will help to fight against tooth decay, for homelessness in a creative and original most adults, this should be between 1350 way. Those with nothing to recycle can get involved by donating a pack of biscuits, which will go directly to CAP and see an automatic entry into the prize draw to win an iPhone 8/ Tablet. “CAP has transformed the lives of homeless people in Sheffield and S2S is keen to do what we can to ensure their work continues,” said S2S Sales Director Brian Watts. “People don’t realise how valuable old tech can be. Even broken, they hold value and recycling them to raise funds for charity is a great idea. Recycling in this way ensures any data is completely destroyed in compliance with GDPR as S2S are fully accredited.” The concept will run over a three-week period and in addition to the recycling angle, S2S is planning a poetry and

PUT YOUR HANDS ON SOME REEF Reef last week announced a UK headline tour for November and December 2018, calling in at The Foundry up at Sheffield University on Friday 7th December. The revitalized West-Country rockers recently concluded the ‘Britrock Must Be Destroyed’ Tour with The Wildhearts and Terrorvision, which included a headline appearance at London’s legendary Hammersmith Apollo. They will follow a summer of prestigious Festival appearances with a tour of Australia and Japan before
they embark on this extensive UK tour. Reef’s first studio album for 18 years, ‘Revelation’, charted at No.26 in the UK album chart last month and received the best reviews of their career, including 8/10 in Classic Rock (‘good things come to those who wait’), 9/10 in Louder Than War (‘the band sound vital and energised’), and 10/10 in Powerplay (‘this is brilliant…a Revelation indeed’). The lead single from the album, ‘My Sweet Love’ featuring Sheryl Crow, was premiered by Chris Evans
on Radio 2, and the station subsequently playlisted the track. Reef performed a live session for Evans on the day ‘Revelation’ was released, and have also appeared on Zoe Ball’s Radio 2 show. The second single to be taken from the new album is title track ‘Revelation’, available now and impacting on July 20th. ‘Revelation’ is a ballsto-the-wall rock’n’roll anthem that evokes AC/DC at their magisterial best, from Gary Stringer’s throaty roar to Jesse Wood’s head-banging riffs. THE SUFFRAJETZ BLAST INTO CHESTERFIELD LIVE REVIEW THE SUFFRAJETZ REAL TIME LIVE, CHESTERFIELD Words & Pic by Roy Goodall
Rarely do we hear proper ‘girl bands’ doing good business but that could soon change as Chesterfield trio The Suffrajetz showed Real Time Live how to rock. Jet, the classic Wings hit and Billy Idol’s White Wedding got proceedings under way and very soon the happy crowd hit the dance floor and more importantly stopped there as the hits followed. Paint It Black, one of the better tracks by The Rolling Stones, and tradional ska favourites Lip Up Fatty and On The Radio also went down well. Whilst some of the stage banter wasn’t quite to my taste plus the inflatables didn’t float my boat either, it was great to see a band that is more than the sum of its parts. Bassist Lexi Whiteside, who played a mean tune on her Rickenbacker, and guitarist Rachel Rodgers swapped smiles with vocal duties on many tunes shared. For me this kept the focus on the band, not one individual which I liked. And let’s not forget the lady at the back, Sally Ruane-Davies. Although well-hidden behind her
drums, a beat wasn’t missed as she kept the machine running smoothly, and at times even joined in the banter. We also had a ‘Happy Birthday’ rendition for Lexi who was celebrating her big day though no age was mentioned! Crowd pleaser Chelsea Dagger worked very well; in fact I’d have ended with that as The Suffrajetz had by now got the Chesterfield crowd jumping and showed no plans to slow down. Although all seasoned musicians this unit
has only been operational for just over a year and as any music type will tell you, running bands isn’t the easiest job in the world, yet no faults appeared with this latest outing on the area’s live circuit. Although only supporting headliners The Sound Thieves, who also did a grand job, it was soon time to close as The Jam hit Town Called Malice called time and left the crowd wanting more, and being honest, you really can’t ask for a better finish.

More than music: Tramlines Festival TRAMLINES DIRECTOR AND CHAMPION OF SHEFFIELD SARAH NULTY SADLY PASSES reveal top-notch festival grub As Tramlines Festival’s celebratory ten-year event (20th – 22nd July at Hillsborough Park in Sheffield) is fast approaching, the festival has revealed details of the mouthwatering food that’s on offer over the weekend. With everything from on trend vegan fast food to portable Sunday dinners and award-winning pies and burgers, visitors will be spoilt for choice. The much larger new site at Hillsborough Park will offer more food and drink traders than ever before, all carefully selected for quality and diversity. Festival-goers can enjoy food from across the globe whilst grooving to headliners Stereophonics, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds and Craig David. Tramlines is firmly on trend with vegan fast food options aplenty. Back in the 70’s at the birth of the festival movement, meat-free options were much more abundant on festival fields than on your average high-street. Fast-forward to 2018 and veganism is more widely practiced for many reasons including ethical choices and health and sustainability of the planet. Tramlines Festival are proud to
present cutting edge vegan food from stalls such as ‘Wholesome Junkies’ who offer their take on KFC (Kentucky Fried Cauliflower), Buffalo mac ‘n’ cheese and döner kebabs. Also on the vegan tip are ‘Herbivorous’ who offer plant based food inspired by the vegan food of California. There is also a distinctly Yorkshire flavour to the Tramlines food offer including the now famous Yorkshire Pudding Wraps – an entire Sunday roast presented in a portable and easy to eat, Yorkshire pudding wrap. Fillings include slow roast beef and pork, with all ingredients locally sourced from Yorkshire suppliers. For those wanting more spice in their lives, Indian and Pakistani street food comes direct from The Rickshaw Club, an outdoor offshoot of the famous Bradford curry house, Kebabeesh. Their menu is influenced by the Punjab areas of India and Pakistan with echoes of the Mughal Empire! Also on a spicy tip is The Kebab Cartel who specialise in home made breads filled with delicious and fresh lamb, chicken and beef shawarmas,
complemented by homemade sauces and condiments. Award-winning bites are on offer including ‘Flying Cows’ creators of the High Flyer burger which won Best Burger in the 2017 British Street Food Awards. Tramlines are also committed to providing plenty of ‘free from’ options with another awardwinning dish on offer from ‘Pieminster’, the Bristolian masters of all things pie. Their gluten free ‘Heidi Burger’ was selected as the best Free From pie at the 2016 British Pie Awards, beating over 800 other entrants. For people looking for sweet treats, Tramlines has plenty on offer. There’s homemade donuts from Festival Donuts and traditional confectionary from Gordon’s Sweets alongside homemade milkshakes from Flying Cows. Tramlines will not let anyone go thirsty. There will be plenty of bars on site including the ‘Magners Cider Garden’ which will feature live music, and details of an official Tramlines Ale, created exclusively by a local brewer will be released next week. Traders over the Tramlines weekend
include: Chips and Wicked Dips, The Cheese Cave, Flying Cows (Burgers Shakes), The Seacow, The Pizza Parlour, The Mac Truck, The Rickshaw Club (Indian Street food), The Pizza Bus, Tiger Bites Bao Buns, The Gravy Train (Poutine), Festival Donuts, Get Wurst, Joe’s Fish Finger Butties, The Taco Shed, Senor Churros, Kebab Cartel, Herbivorous, Moka Coffee Bar, Texas Smoker, Wholesome Junkies, Gordon’s Sweets, Piggie Smalls (hotdogs), Wah Wahs (churros), Chicken Shed, Burrito Shack, Seafood Mediterranean Wraps, Seasoned Potato Wedges & Dips, The Tex-Mex Kitchen, Greek Street Food, The Fish and Chip shed, Pieminster, Wrap a Yorky Pudding, Easy Cheesey (burgers), Chicken Shop, Chips and Dips.
Tickets for the 10th Tramlines Festival have been selling fast. They’re now on sixth release costing £79 plus booking fee for a weekend ticket, covering all three days and are available from www.tramlines.org. uk. Keep an eye out for further announcements by following Tramlines on social ‘@tramlines
The director of our city’s Tramlines Festival has sadly died aged 36. Tramlines was launched in 2009 with the help of Miss Nulty, attracting about 35,000 music fans. She was appointed director in 2013. The statement issued by organisers reads: “It is with great sadness that Tramlines Festival must announce that our festival director, Sarah Nulty, has passed away at the age of 36 following a brief illness. “Sarah was instrumental in the launch of Tramlines in 2009, taking on the role of festival director in 2013. “She came to Sheffield as a student in 1999 and worked at Gatecrasher and Bed nightclub, going on to manage various venues and live events around the city.
“Sarah dedicated her whole working career to the Sheffield music industry. After nearly two-decades, this work has led to massive benefits for the city and she has been the driving force of Tramlines for many years. “Her tenacity, vision and unbreakable work
ethic are the reasons that the festival can celebrate its tenth anniversary. “Sarah turned her hand to every aspect of the running the event over the years, she was the life and soul of Tramlines and no job was too small, but no responsibility too great.
“We would like to celebrate Sarah’s huge talent and the profound impact that she has had on the lives of so many people over the years.” Everyone at The Mercury sends their condolences to the Tramlines team and Sarah’s family and friends at this sad time.

A mixed week this time, with a couple of different targets sought, but with only limited success. My first visit of the week was to the new water I briefly mentioned earlier this month. It’s a weedy, overgrown, neglected pit, with crystal clear water, and a bad reputation, but it holds some hefty tench, and it was tinca on my mind when I turned up in the (very) early morning hours to try and plot a capture. It’s a city park lake, and with that the usual hazards must be considered, so I took only a bare minimum of kit, and kept a wary eye around me! I wanted to fish the ‘lift method’, a classic way to catch June tench, and as the mist burned off the water, I was set up, my float semi-cocked by a BB shot on the bottom. A trio of red maggots adorned the hook, and a small number of their compatriots had been tossed over the red tip of the quill to settle on the bottom for added interest. I was ready for a proper lump! After an hour without so much as a flicker of interest, the float suddenly staggered in the water, then slowly rose up to lay flat! I struck into solid resistance, and a nicely conditioned tench of around 4lb soon lay on the mat, glistening in the morning sun; perfect! Another hour passed, and despite a good number of plump tench rolling in the swim, I had no further interest, so opted to change things. I pieced together the feeder rod, slid a small method feeder up the line, and attached a short hook link. Wrapped in Spotted Fin Classic Corn feeder mix, with more gentles on the hook, the tempter was lobbed out to where the fish had been rolling and left to settle. Within a minute, the tip started quivering as the groundbait was investigated by something; seconds later, the tip pulled slowly around, and I struck into thin air! An unmissable bite missed! I reset the rig, and the same thing happened again, but this time, the strike was met with a solid thump as a bigger tench moved off quickly. It took a bit to tame this one, and when I eventually got it to the net and lifted it from the water, I immediately put it back down again, the net and fish suspended in the margins, because this one was worth a photograph! I love big tench, and consider anything over 5lb to be a specimen, and so was extremely pleased to weigh my prize at exactly 7lb. It was an immaculate fish too, with a dark patch on the tail to add character, but in pristine condition with a tubby belly which almost matched my own! After a quick snap for posterity, the fish was lowered into the margin to recover, and it soon swam away with a defiant flick of the tail! One smaller tench followed, but as the sun rose higher, the activity stopped, and it was time to pack up. I was happy with three plump tench on my first visit, but now my appetite has been whetted, I’m after a bigger one… they are reputed to reach double figures! A second session saw me crossing fields at 5am, heading for the canal to try and catch perch by ‘droplobbing’. It’s the same as ‘dropshotting’ but instead of a plastic bait, a real worm is used. I’m

still surprised by the amount of dropshot anglers who have never thought of using a real worm (or even maggots for that matter) on the hook, but in my opinion, a worm should out fish any imitation surely? It’s one of my favourite methods, and after an hour ‘worm charming’ the night before, I had enough worms for a couple of hours fun… Except it wasn’t. Unusually, I couldn’t buy a bite on worm, and gave up after an hour of fruitless twitching, instead changing to a small white lure from the Rapture stable and moving venues. First drop in, and my first fish, a feisty perch came kicked from the depths… and that was it. I walked the whole perimeter of the lake, and never had another bite! It was time to move on for the third time, and I set off for a rapidly drying River Churnet, of which only two small pools were fishable. No matter, I love small river lure fishing, and I was determined to catch! I’d changed my lure once more for a bigger paddletail and flicked it forwards into the flow to allow it to be dragged downstream before steadily retrieving it. Wham! I’d just about tightened the braid when I felt an almighty wallop on the lure, but it was so fast I missed it! After a morning struggling for bites, this was a setback indeed, as one chance is normally all you get in these tiny swims, but I cast out again hoping for another attack. I watched the lure move back towards and espied a dark shadow beneath! It was a trout, a fairly hefty one at that, and as it snatched at the lure, I missed it again! I know, if you are reading this, that no doubt you have advice aplenty, but it was just one of those days… I moved upstream to a swim that I know has some considerable depth as in my days as a firefighter, I once conducted a rescue from the very same place! Again, the big paddletail was cast across the flow, and once again, unbelievably, I missed the bite which almost instantly followed! Enough was enough, so I fined right down to a 2g jighead, loaded with a microfry lure, and flicked it along the margin. Whilst I experimented with my retrieve, seeing how the tiny lure behaved in the barely perceptible flow, a flash of gold and a jerk at the rod tip saw me finally hook into a perch! At around 6oz, it certainly wasn’t big, but on an ultralight Sonik Magna rod, it was good fun. Others followed as I discovered a nest of perch to plunder right beneath my feet, the undercut bank providing great cover for hungry predators, and for the next twenty minutes, a string of river perch came to hand; great fun! The sun was high in the sky, and I could feel sweat beginning to prickle my neck, so I decided to have ‘one last cast’ and deftly dropped the lure right by the sedges on the far bank. The tiny paddler was eased back towards me without result, but as I prepared to lift the rod, a small pike hit the lure with some force, right under my feet, and gave a superb account of itself as the last fish of the morning. Once again, it wasn’t big, a couple of pounds at most, but having struggled all morning, finding a throng of perch and finishing with an angry jack pike meant that I could return home happy. I’ve got a bit of preparation to do, as I’m spending all weekend at the Carp in the Park extravaganza in Northamptonshire. Hopefully I might just meet one or two fellow anglers there, and I’ll be able to talk fishing, even if I have to wait until next week before I can go again! Tight lines!

FRIENDS REUNITED IN ROTHERHAM AS VASSELL LOOKS FORWARD TO NEW CHALLENGE Starting a new job in any environment can be a daunting prospect, with the task of meeting and getting to know new colleagues and make new friends, but new beginnings at Rotherham United for Kyle Vassell may be a little easier with a number of familiar faces already in the ranks. The 25-year-old attacker explained that he is relishing the opportunity to improve with his new club under boss Paul Warne, where he joins a teammate of last season in the form of

BLADES REVEAL NEW HOME KIT Sheffield United Football Club are proud to reveal the new home kit for the 2018/19 season. With a continuation of the club’s partnership with kit supplier adidas, United also welcome a new front of shirt sponsor, Ramsdens Currency, along with long-standing sponsor DoorDeals continuing their back of shirt
sponsorship for a third successive year. Supporters will be able to purchase the kit in store and online at sufcdirect.co.uk from 9am on Wednesday 4th July. Technical partner, adidas, commented: “Our current design direction for the upcoming season sees us providing a plain reverse shirt treatment for Sheffield United, and our other partner clubs, who have stripes within their identity. In combination with more tailored and bespoke detailing throughout the kit we believe this will allow us to create more standout designs for our clubs in the UK and we’re looking forward to seeing the shirts on pitch in 2018/19.”
the club in his youth, expressed his delight at the opportunity to prove himself in the Championship, having worked hard to forge a career in the game with some impressive stints in the non-league. “I'm delighted to be here, it's a great club and a great opportunity,” he added. “I came on trial years and years ago now under Andy Scott who had me at Brentford. I was unsuccessful, I played a game up in Gateshead I think it was and that's how I worked my way into non-league after that. “I've never played in the Championship and it's always been one of my goals, so to have the opportunity to do so is massive for me and I'm very grateful. “It's tough and if you get to non-league you had to have had setbacks to get there. Most boys come from pro clubs and get released and
have to work their way back up. It's tough but if you stick at it and work hard then things like this can happen.” The Milton Keynes-born forward continued to explain that fellow Friday signing Robertson was unaware that he would be in good company in putting pen-to-paper with the Millers, but a morning meeting in a hotel foyer revealed the truth to his former Blackpool teammate. “I saw him [Robertson] at the hotel before we came down here and he was buzzing because I'd kept it quiet, so maybe I was a bit horrible to him!” Vassell continued. “We've been good pals at Blackpool for the last few years as well and he's another great lad, so the fact that the gaffer is signing other players like that I know what he wants and it's going to be a great changing room.”

However, Vassell will also be reunited with former Peterborough United teammates Joe Newell and Jon Taylor, who he admits helped to convince him that his move to the club was right after being talked into phoning them by his new boss Warne. “The manager made me!” Vassell joked. “He said that because he'd done his research on me, he wanted me to do my research as well, so I did. “I had long conversations with both of them and they both just said you're going to love it here, so that definitely persuaded me. “I know them from Peterborough, they're great lads and I'm looking forward to it.” Vassell, who nearly became a Rotherham United player before when trialling with

It can now be confirmed that David Brooks has left Bramall Lane, with the club receiving an undisclosed, club record fee from AFC Bournemouth for his services. Brooks has completed a medical with Eddie Howe’s Cherries and has now put pen-to-paper on a contract, having agreed personal terms with the south-coast club. United moved last season to reward Brooks with a new long-term deal and had no intentions to sell. However, following changes to his representation, interest from the Premier League proved a key driver in the player wanting to make the move, with the Blades forced to negotiate the best possible transfer fee, plus additional clauses, including a sell-on percentage.
