ROTHERHAM SHOW 2018 SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE! A combination of new attractions and old favourites will be on offer at this year’s Rotherham Show – still the biggest freeto-enter show in the North of England! Taking place on the weekend of September 8 and 9, the Show promises to be jampacked with fun for all the family! New for this year will be the Show’s “Retro” area – which will include a large colourful marquee with

stalls inside selling retro/vintage goods and tasty treats. There will also be a stage inside with live music over both days including performances from The Mersey Belles, Brandon Walton, Moonshiners and The Rodeos Duo. Also new for this year, is a dedicated children’s area offering entertainment from The Maniax, a hilarious fast moving show with lots of tricks and gags, magic and silliness

form Banana Brains Fun Show and fantastic activities including space hoppers, giant Jenga and more! Live music will feature heavily on the menu of this year’s show, with the Music Marquee hosting performances from bands such as King Pleasure and the Biscuit Boys, At the Arcade, Tom Masters, Papa Legba’s, Julie Felix and The Fab4. All the old Rotherham Show favourites will still be there, from

the dog show to the horticultural marquee, the vintage vehicle rally to the emergency services and military displays, as well as numerous stalls, fairground rides and refreshment vendors. Cllr Sarah Allen, Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Cleaner, Greener Communities, said: “Rotherham Show attracts tens of thousands of visitors to what is an amazing free weekend of family

entertainment. “This year’s Show will have all the popular family favourites, plus some new attractions, such as the new Retro area. If you’ve never visited before, the 2018 Rotherham Show is not to be missed!” To help cover the Show’s running costs, a £5 per car parking charge on Herringthorpe Playing Fields has been introduced for this year’s event. “We want to continue

running this great free show, which has delighted the public of Rotherham and beyond for almost 40 years, and this parking charge will enable us to help cover the costs of staging this event,” added Cllr Allen. “By generating income in this way we can continue to offer free entry to the Show itself, while improving the variety of entertainment on offer year on year, to all who visit.”

ROUTE MAP CONFIRMED FOR LET’S RIDE SHEFFIELD CYCLING FESTIVAL British Cycling and HSBC UK have conﬁrmed the route which thousands of locals will take as they pedal their way through the city for the HSBC UK Let’s Ride Shefﬁeld event, taking place on July 15. The free-to-attend event will get underway at Endcliffe Park, with the 6.5km course taking participants into the city centre via Ecclesall Road. Along the route, there will be plenty of things to

keep participants of all ages entertained, with Festival Zones situated in Endcliffe Park and Peace Gardens. Here, there will be a host of family-friendly activities as well as live music and refreshments for participants to enjoy. Julie Harrington, chief executive of British Cycling, said: “Shefﬁeld played host to a fantastic event last year, and we’ve worked hard – alongside Shefﬁeld City Council and local businesses

and attractions – to ensure that HSBC UK Let’s Ride Sheffield will again be a truly enjoyable, free and family-friendly day out which showcases the best of the city and the real benefits of cycling.” Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture Parks and Leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “Working with British Cycling and HSBC UK we can promise a brilliant day for all the family. Due to the unprecedented demand for day tickets to Sheffield’s biggest music festival, Tramlines, an extremely limited amount of day tickets are now on sale for the 10th anniversary taking place from Friday 20th to Sunday 22nd July at Hillsborough Park. The UK Festival Award-winning event has also announced stage times meaning festival goers can plan in advance and never miss their favourite bands. The lineup includes Stereophonics, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Craig David’s TS5, Clean Bandit, Blossoms, De La Soul, Milburn, Jake Bugg, Shed Seven, Everything Everything, Reverend and The Makers, Tokio Myers, The Sherlocks, Stefflon Don, Mystery Jets and many more. In response to the high demand and with support from Sheffield City Council and the licensing authorities, Tramlines is now able to put a very limited amount of Friday, Saturday and Sunday day tickets on sale. Saturday day tickets are priced at £45, while Friday and Sunday day tickets are priced at £39.50, both plus booking fees. With limited passes available, people are advised to buy quickly. ST. JAMES RETAIL PARK CELEBRATES ITS GRAND OPENING St. James Retail Park, in Norton, Shefﬁeld celebrated

its opening this weekend with plenty of free fun, entertainment and giveaways. The centre brings a great lineup of brands to south Shefﬁeld including TK Maxx, Next and M&S. Shoppers were pleased to see the new investment coming into the area and praised the quality of the design and features like the green walls which make the centre so much more attractive than traditional retail parks. Shops like Next and TK Maxx reported brisk trade during Saturday and despite a brief

lull during England’s World Cup game, the upbeat mood continued during the rest of the weekend. A technical delay installing BT lines means that Aldi’s opening is delayed until 19th July with Pets At Home to follow on the 20th. The Grand opening weekend was a great opportunity for customers to come and explore St. James Retail Park for the first time. Visitors such as James Staves and daughter Ellie from Dronfield enjoyed free ice cream courtesy of Wilco, while other children such as Emma Davison plus mum Sophie, also form Dronfield, were all given free tote bags and souvenir windmills to remember the occasion. Local brass band, Dronfield Genquip Band, added to the atmosphere throughout the weekend. Bryony Plain-Jones, Asset Manager, St James Retail Park says, ‘’After more than two years in the making, we are really excited to be celebrating our Grand Opening and have enjoyed seeing so many shoppers welcoming the new stores opening at St James Retail Park.’’

RED LINES IMPROVE SCHOOL SAFETY NEEDING HELP WITH YOUR BINS? Sheffield City Council has begun announcing its red lines when it comes to road safety outside schools. A new traffic regulation order for the city’s first red route – where double red lines replace the more common double yellow lines on busy main roads, outside schools and on bus routes – has now been advertised by the council. Sheffield is set to become one of the first cities outside of London to introduce “red routes”, following a change in the law last year. These Red routes have a tougher zero tolerance approach to traffic violations – no stopping or waiting is allowed for any length of time under any circumstances. Breaching this can lead to an immediate fixed penalty notice or fine. The first red route is proposed to be on Baslow Road near Totley Primary School, which is being expanded to accommodate more pupils. The proposed scheme includes a signal controlled crossing on Baslow Road

near Totley Grange Road. Restrictions on parking are to be introduced along Baslow Road and Totley Grange Road to allow the safe operation of the crossing. Red Route restrictions will prevent stopping on Baslow Road and the junction of Totley Grange Road. This includes a prohibition on the picking up and setting down of passengers. Councillor Jack Scott, Cabinet Member for Transport and Development at Sheffield City Council said: “Nothing is more important to me than the safety of our city’s children, It only takes a second to create a hazard around a school. I want to be as clear as possible about parking on red lines: There is no waiting, no parking, no excuses and no second chances. Back for its 15th year, Art in the Gardens will see around 300 artists and craft workers, exhibiting more than 4,000 pieces of their work including the competition entries, at Sheffield’s Botanical Gardens on Saturday 1st September and Sunday 2nd September. Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “Art in the Gardens is the perfect celebration of Sheffield’s art and culture and the annual portrait competition is always one of the festival highlights. With thousands of people attending the event over the weekend, this competition is a brilliant opportunity for artists to showcase their work and promises to be a fantastic exhibition.” The portrait competition was officially launched Friday, 6th July and from then, artists can collect a photograph of The Lord Mayor from the main reception at Sheffield Town Hall and begin work on their portraits or sculptures. Photographs will be handed out on a firstcome first-served basis.The Lord Mayor was photographed for Art in the Gardens at various locations inside his new workplace, the Sheffield Town Hall including the Lord Mayor’s Parlour, the Council Chamber and the Ante Room. Professional artist and photographer Trevor Neal said: “It was a great afternoon meeting the Lord Mayor and being able to photograph him for the portrait competition for this year’s Art in the Gardens festival. TIPS ON SURVIVING A HEATWAVE WEDDING

Put a drink in their hand. Instead of passing out glasses of bubbly as your guests arrive, consider having decorative pitchers of fruit-infused ice water at the entrance of your outdoor ceremony. Since some fruit, like watermelon and mango, can help reduce body temperature, guests can settle down in their seats with a drink that’ll keep them cool while you say “I do.” Keep their butts cool. HILLSBOROUGH EXCHANGE SHOPPING CENTRE PLANS MAJOR REFURBISHMENT Highly popular centre in the heart of Hillsborough already includes large branches of Wilko, Boots and Home Bargains, in addition to many local independent retailers who provide everything from shoe repairs to rugs, and from holidays to vaping products. All will stay open during the expansion. The new plans will look to refurbish the existing shopping centre, providing larger, enhanced retail spaces, along with 78 new highquality homes on the upper ﬂoors. The large rooftop car park will

remain largely unaffected after the revamp. Developer Killultagh Estates’ proposals aim to “future-proof” the centre, maintaining Hillsborough Exchange’s position as a community hub, and ensuring the centre meets the needs of modern retailers. Killultagh estimate that around 240 new jobs will be created through these proposals. A Killultagh spokesperson said: “Hillsborough Exchange Shopping Centre has been serving the people of Hillsborough since 1988. In those

The parish also includes several reservoirs, and a number of minor settlements. Bradfield is located 8 miles (13 km) from Sheffield city centre and 14 miles (23 km) from Barnsley. On 6 July 2014, Stage 2 of the 2014 Tour de France from York to Sheffield, passed through the village. It was also the location of the seventh climb of the stage, the Category 4 Côte de Bradfield. It was 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) long at an average gradient of 7.4%. Bradfield is one of the largest parishes in England, and covers extensive moor and agricultural land around the Damflask Reservoir, Dale Dike Reservoir, Strines Reservoir, and Agden Reservoirs, including the Bradfield, Midhope, and Broomhead moors and eastern parts of the Howden moors. The western end of the parish reaches to the upper parts of the

Upper Derwent Valley with part of its boundary forming Yorkshire’s border with Derbyshire. The northern part of the parish includes the Langsett reservoir and Midhope reservoir, and borders the town and civil parish of Stocksbridge. The eastern edge reaches the western extent of the urban spread of Sheffield, and includes the suburb of Stannington, as well as the villages of Oughtibridge, Wharncliffe Side, and Worrall. Minor habitations within the parish include Midhopestones, Upper Midhope on the northern edge, and Dungworth in the southeastern part. The name of the suburb comes from Hillsborough House built and named in 1779 in tribute to the Earl of Hillsborough who lived in Hillsborough, County Down. Approximately 42 people were killed in the immediate Hillsborough area in the Great

A blistering weekend of sunshine blessed the crowds at the annual Carp in the Park show at Billing Aquadrome in Northamptonshire, and I was lucky enough to enjoy the whole weekend working on the RAD Angling stand! I mean lucky too, it’s always a privilege to be asked to help showcase such top quality carbon bankware, and as part of a ﬁne team of consultants, we always look forward to getting together to discuss all things ﬁshing whilst checking out the latest production prototypes and launching new kit into the market. It’s always fun, (if tiring) and this show is unusual because everyone bivvies up, enjoys a few beers and a barbeque together, whilst listening to some live music! How can it not be enjoyable?

I drove down on Saturday morning, bright and early, to find the stand (a purpose built trailer) ready to go, the kettle on, and the bacon grilling, as the team started to get ready for the forthcoming day. The RAD trailer is the envy of many within the ‘paddock’ and allows us to get set up within minutes, and pack away even faster, whilst others struggle with building gazebo type stands which are in no way as sturdy as the trailer. Once opened, our carbon fibre products can be set up on the front stage, the television set to loop the promotional video, and that’s about it; simple, visually effective, and easy to use. Even before the gates officially opened, we had visitors from other companies as they came to check out what was on offer before the rush, and also to cast a shady eye over our trailer; I don’t think it will be long before similar others start to appear! By 10am, the sun was already high in the sky, and as the gates opened, the paying public started the quick first loop of the assembled trade stands before deciding where to spend their hard-earned cash. It’s

something that you get used to at the shows, the initial rush, a quieter period, then mid-morning, the action starts to hot up as decisions are made and customers return to the trailer. I love it! The products are so good, that no ‘hard sell’ is required, but it’s always good fun bantering with customers as each option is explained before cash changes hands and the buyer departs happy with their purchase. Throughout the day, a number of talks and demonstrations took place on the ‘stage’ with big name anglers spilling the beans to show their secrets, edges and tips, and a bankside cookery showcase saw volunteers learn new skills under the tutelage of top chef Simon Bishop who then presented them with a bag full of goodies too! There was huge a beer tent, casting instruction, rig and bait demos, and all sorts of other things which kept the crowds entertained. The ﬁrst day went well, lots of carbon ﬁbre bankware went home with happy customers, and when it was time to shut down for the day, we simply dropped the trailer door; brilliant! I didn’t realise how tiring it had been though. Fully intent on bivvying up, I didn’t bother, instead unfolding my bed in the shadow of the trailer, unfurling my duvet, and that’s the last I remember until the boss woke me an hour later with a bottle of beer in hand! The evening was spent listening to the live band, sharing a few cold beers, and eating platefuls of steak, sausages, chicken and burgers as the sun went down…perfect! I slipped back under the duvet and awoke 8 hours later as the sun rose over the trees, my Minions duvet cover adorned with a thin sheen of early morning dew, before going for a freezing cold shower ready to start day two. Sunday followed in much the same way as the previous day, a plateful of bacon sandwiches getting things off to a super start, before mugs of tea washed it all down and the trailer was opened up. Again, enthusiastic punters lined up ready to buy new carbon, and before long, we were forced to take orders as so much stock had been sold! The sun still shone, the weather was superb, and every single person I spoke to had

thoroughly enjoyed it and couldn’t wait for the next one… the mark of a good show. Carp in the Park turned out to be a fantastic way for the angling trade to engage directly with customers, answer queries, and sell product. More importantly, the whole event was fun, with something for all, and I noted far fewer bored looking partners as the angler in their life browsed the kit on offer…not like many of the other shows where it ALL about ﬁshing! Overall, it was a fun way to spend a weekend, I can hardly call it ‘work’, and it was great to meet so many anglers with whom I’ve only conversed via email or social media who popped in to see us.
